In addition, her association with the hemp plant ma (Cannabis sativa) further enhances her ties to immortality: every part of the hemp plant has been used in medicine since ancient times, especially its seeds which were believed to firm the flesh and prevent old age. LONGQUAN WARE VASE CARVED WITH PLUMS, MING DYNASTY | 明 龍泉刻花梅瓶

CHINA, 15TH CENTURY, MING DYNASTY Dimensions: 7" (17.78cm) H A porcelain celadon green baluster vase with short neck and inverted lip. The surface of the vase is carved with swirling floral patterns and the tapered base is carved with a vertical linear pattern. The foot of the vase is left unglazed and is burned lightly during firing. Celadon refers to green glazed stoneware and porcelain wares from China, Japan, and Korea. It is a broad term that encompasses various hues of green; although other green ware types such as green jun and ge wares help to delineate the spectrum of green-glazed ceramics. Celadon originated in Zhejiang Province during the East Han Dynasty. Producing Celadon wares involves a reducing atmosphere of 1300 degrees centigrade. The pigment is a combination of iron oxide and titanium, which is applied in thick washes to produce a rich yet soft surface quality.

CHINA, QING DYNASTY OR EARLIER Dimensions: 6" (15.24cm) H

The vase recalls the Shang Dynasty hu-form ritual vessel, as well as the surface decoration, and construction. The pair of phalanges refers to the piece-mold casting technique customary to Shang dynasty metalworking. The horizontal band along the neck of the vessel features a taotie mask motif. Piece-mold casting is a bronzeworking technique, where the desired vessel is first fashioned out of clay and is then covered with an additional clay layer that when dried and cut away reveals the casting mold. The original clay model is shaved down to create the interior core and the mold sections are reassembled to form the outer walls. This interior space between the inner and outer walls is filled with molten bronze. Joins--like the phalanges that appear on this object--aid in keeping the sections of the mold together. Although this hu-form vase does not use the piece-mold technique, the addition of the pair of falanges refers back to the archaic metalworking method. Porcelain bowl with copper red flambé glaze exterior and white ground interior. Exterior glaze a characteristic reddish flambé glaze with red-to-white gradation along the curve of the body. Slightly curved lip and raised foot. Includes wooden base and brocaded box. Flambé glazes are high-fired iridescent glazes with a variety of blue, purple, red tones. The sheen is produced by using copper oxide and fired in a reducing atmosphere. No two flambé glazed wares are alike, thus each piece is unique. This particular vase is an 18th century reddish sang de boeuf glaze or langyaohong glaze, which refers to a Qing dynasty revival of red monochrome wares that were produced in the early Ming and Song dynasties. Eighteenth century sang de boeuf glaze wares are typified by a very subtle mottled coverage, streaked effects, and subtle red-to-white gradations. The rectangular paneled top and carved high waist follows a carved apron that is supported by square-sectioned legs ending in hoof feet. The edges of the horizontal apron and the vertical legs are punctured with protruding auspicious lingzhi fungus shaped forms. The apron and legs include abstract linear and circular forms. The gently flowing grain of the rare huanghuali hardwood is the central decorative focus of the pair of chairs. The emphasis on materiality is an expression of the restrained elegance that typifies furniture of Ming and Qing dynasties.

A PAIR OF CARVED HAINAN HUANGHUALI ARMCHAIRS, 20TH CENTURY | 海南黃花梨官帽椅一對 CHINA, 20TH CENTURY Dimensions: 37" (93.98cm) H

A pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty-style Huanghuali hardwood low-back yokeback armchairs from the twentieth century. The chairs are flanked with gracefully curved and sloped armrests, a gently squared back, and a rectangular splat divided into three panels. The top panel features a square carved motif in low relief of a serpentine dragon among swirling clouds, while the lower panel is pierced with a ruyi shaped cartouche. The chair is composed of mortise and tenon joinery and is raised by four vertical legs, an arch-shaped apron, and pairs of side stretchers and spandrels. The Ming dynasty precedent for this chair-type rose in popularity in Southern China in the Yangtze River region. The gently flowing grain of the rare Huanghuali hardwood is the central decorative focus of the pair of chairs. The emphasis on materiality is an expression of the restrained elegance that typifies furniture of Ming and Qing dynasties. Of honey-gold and reddish-brown hue, the ripples of the wood grain harmoniously blend into one another. Thus, just the wood grain alone creates a sumptuous surface design accompanied by minimal ornament. The pair of chairs are a compositional amalgam of forms derived from canonical Chinese chair types from the Ming to early Qing dynasties. The overall form of the chair ties in elements from the ‘yokeback’ chair type and the ‘Southern official’s hat’ seat type. In addition, the three-sectioned backsplat is a common element found in ‘horseshoe-back’ chairs and thus is atypical of the low-back yokeback armchairs. Notably, the armrests are not supported by curved stiles, as is typical of the low-back yokeback chair type. This omission positions the pair of chairs stylistically closer to the canonical ‘horseshoe-back’ chair type. The elegant lines and masterful craftsmanship of the armrests are accentuated, as they are unobstructed by competing stiles. WHITE JADE CARVED STATUE OF GUANYIN | 白玉觀音立像

Dimensions: 15.375" (39.05cm) H White jade carved statue of Guanyin holding a water vase and standing on a pedestal with lobbed base. Surrounding Guanyin is a flaming mandorla and curling ribbons. The water vase is one of the eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune and contains the nectar of life. Speckles of russet jade are visible on the front and back of the statue, especially the pedestal and edges of the mandorla.

Guanyin is the goddess of mercy and considered to be the physical embodiment of compassion. She is all-seeing, allhearing being who is called upon by worshipers in times of uncertainty, despair, and fear. Guanyin is based on the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. The white jade body is an auspicious stone associated with immortality and longevity. In addition it signifies that the owner is steadfast, a gentleman, and upholds positive moral values. Jade is a hard material and nearly impossible to carve, thus it must be abraded. The abrasion of jade is a time-consuming practice that involves wearing away the stone with an abrasive substance, such as sand, water, or drilling tools. The detail and size of this Guanyin statue reflects the time-consuming and highly skilled process of the artisan-craftsman. Estimate $10000 - 20000

The pigment is a combination of iron oxide and titanium, which is applied in thick washes to produce a rich yet soft surface quality.
