HOW TO BID ONLINE AUCTIONS We conduct the majority of our auctions online, offering selected works at attractive price points. When registering to bid in an Online auction, you will be asked to register your credit card information. You will receive a link to pay online once your bid is successful. Otherwise, your credit card will not be automatically charged. Please note: • •

You cannot cancel a bid once it has been submitted. Each bid you place enters you into a binding contract with Arnaud’s. If a bid is placed within five minutes of the closing time of a lot, five additional minutes will be added to the designated closing time for that lot. Please note that the extension of one lot’s closing time does not affect other lots’ closing times.

LIVE AUCTIONS Bid In Person If you prefer to bid in person, you can register in advance by contacting Arnaud’s Client Services. We encourage you to register at least 24 hours in advance of a sale to allow sufficient time for completing this process. To register for live auctions, you need to bring your photo ID and a proof of address to our office. If you prefer to register online, please contact Arnaud’s Client Services via email or phone. Telephone Bidding If you prefer to bid by telephone, you can register with an Arnaud’s representative who will call you during the auction. We recommend that you consider leaving an ‘emergency absentee bid’ before an auction begins in case we are not able to reach you when the auction happens. To register for a telephone bid, please contact Client Services for assistance. Absentee Bid If you are unable to attend an auction, you can simply register an absentee bid at least 24 hours prior to the sale with our Client Services office who will bid on the item for you. An absentee bid left in advance takes priority over the same bid amount in the room or on the telephones. Mr. Rosshandler’s career started in Europe and moved from Mexico City to Manhattan before finally settling in Montreal. Assistant director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in the seventies (to which he has donated the larger part of his vast collection of pre-Columbian art) and later director of the Lavalin Collection until 1989. C. C. Wang, C. T. Loo and other major players in the world of 20th-century Chinese art were great friends of his, and helped to develop Leo’s literati taste in Chinese classical painting. Two great Ming masterpieces by Zhu Da 朱耷 (Ba Da Shanren 八大山人) left Leo’s collection in the 1980’s, sold by Sotheby’s New York, and more recently many others have been donated to museums in Canada. This small eclectic group represents the last few works that the Rosshandler’s treasured for sentimental and artistic reasons. Note:

STONE HEAD OF A BODHISATTVA, NORTHERN WEI China, Northern Wei Dynasty, 386-534 CE Dimensions: 10 1/3”(26.2cm) W, 18 1/2”(47cm) H (sculpture only) Carved from a light cream to grey high quartz content sandstone, the head of a Bodhisattva with long pendulous earlobes, tall neck, elongated face with downcast eyes, arched eyebrows and a slight smile, the hair in thick folds held back into a high chignon with a leaf front tiara. The back rough and not highly finished. Modern field stone and copper stand.

北魏 砂岩石雕佛首 Provenance: Ex Leung family, Hong Kong The high chignon or crown of this Bodhisattva or Buddha figure is seen in several statues of seated Maitreya Buddha figures of the Northern Wei Dynasty, one example in the Metropolitan Museum, New York and another in the Musee Cernuschi, Paris, both of which are connected to the Yungang caves and both dated to late 5th century CE. There are several stylistic elements of the face and hair which draw similarities between the Cernuschi statue and the current auction example – in particular the long earlobes, the downcast wide eyes, the smile, the treatment of the hair at the forehead, and the leaf form crown. However, both of these museum statues were carved from much finer sandstone which maintained details than the auction example. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/60010263 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a0/ P1140483_Cernuschi_Bodhisattva_Wei_du_nord_MC6332_rwk.jpg Compare with a small 25 cm head of a bodhisattva, Northern Wei Dynasty Ex C T Loo and J T Tai collections in Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale of 13OCT2021, Lot 3676. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/important-chinese-art-4/asandstone-head-of-a-bodhisattva-northern-wei And a Buddha head 40 cm long in their sale of 01APR2018, Lot 3029, from a Japanese collection, described as Yungang style. http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/curiosity-iv-hk0793/lot.3029.html $ 3000 - 5000 22

WINTER SCENE WITH MANDARINS AND ATTENDANTS China, Qing, 18th century Dimensions: 34 3/4”(88.1cm) W, 35 3/8”(89.8cm) L Ink and Watercolor on Paper Chinese Export style, ink and watercolour on paper, canton school depicting a winter scene with well painted architectural elements of pavilions and a residential gateway front of which a large crowd has formed including several mandarins, attendants in winter costume, either greeting or seeing off a figure in travelling clothes on the left. This style of genre painting was typical of the period 1750 to approximately 1800, made largely for export market in the manner of wall paper for English and European great houses which would decorate at least one room in the Chinoiserie mode. Given the subject, it is likely that it is from a suite showing 4 seasons, painted as inserts into more densely decorated wall papered landscapes. Very few survive intact given the fragility of the paper medium as opposed to the late oil on canvas China Trade painting of the early 1800’s. The painters were given wide freedom of choices of subject in many cases, and this scene may be taken from the popular literature (e.g. Hong Loumeng) or an interpretation of a poem, but the exact scene is not known.

BLUE AND WHITE BELL-SHAPED BEAKER CUP, WANLI MARK AND PERIOD China, Ming dynasty, Wanli Period, 1572 – 1620 Dimensions: 5 1/8”(13 cm) H, 4 7/8”(12.3 cm) dia Elongated bell form cup with everted rim on a splayed footring, deep underglaze cobalt blue painting, the rim interior with a tendril wave pattern repeated at the foot, the exterior with a border at the rim of ogee floral and flame pattern above the main register of front facing 5-clawed imperial dragons amid flames and unusual lingzhi cloud patterns. The underside base with a double blue ring and six character mark of Wanli and of the period. This particularly large cup or beaker is unusual in its shape and size, but not unique in the wide range of later Ming porcelain vessels. Certainly by the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722) the form with a slightly less prominent splay to the foot was widely used in domestic and export examples, in both underglaze blue and famille verte (wucai) examples. But when exactly did the form of this cup start? The origin of the shape is most likely Middle Eastern / Islamic and the closest matching form is found in Abbasid, Iranian glass wares of the 9th – 10th century, as seen in examples in the collections of the British Museum, London and the Metropolitan Museum, New York. The form makes its transfer to ceramics in Seljuk Period Mina’i painted wares around the 12th century again in Iran. The most likely period of the transfer of the shape to China would be in the late 16th century during the Zhengde reign (1505-1521) as it was known that there was a strong court taste for Islamic forms – pen boxes, vessels and even Arabic inscriptions on porcelains and bronzes. A Zhengde period bronze incense burner with Arabic inscription and a similar though slightly more bombe than bell shaped silhouette can be found in Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale, Later Bronzes from the Water, Pine , Stone Retreat, 07APR2014, Lot 212. By the Jiajing period (1522-1566) we can more readily see examples in underglaze cobalt blue decorated porcelain. One is in the Palace Museum, Taipei, and illustrated in The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum – 35 – Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red (II) (Hong Kong, 2000, p 149, no. 138), with a writhing left facing 5-clawed dragon in the early Ming style amid “fluffy” lingzhi shaped clouds in a light blue wash, waves at the base and on the footring, and the rim interior with a leaf dental border, and Jiajing six character mark to the base. A similar more clearly painted and fired example of the same can be found in Christie’s New York sale 20SEPT2013, Lot 1292, the interior with a dragon roundel in the cavetto, and 4½ in. (11.5 cm.) high. https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-5719608

FAMILLE VERTE WUCAI DRAGON PHOENIX SWEETMEATS BOX China, Ming dynasty, Wanli Period (1572 – 1620) Dimensions: 2”(5.2 cm) H, 8 5/8”(22 cm) dia The round box heavily potted bowl with everted rim on a pronounced footring, with mallow flower form interior of six petal shapes surrounding a floral silhouette central bowl. The petals and centre painted in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels of 2 red, 2 blue dragons and 3 red and blue phoenixes amid leaves, florals and buds. The exterior with two sinuous dragons and flying phoenixes amid the same leaves and florals of the interior, and a multi-colour key fret border at the base. The footring with an underglaze blue six character mark of Wanli and of the period. This style of Wanli wucai sweetmeats box appears to have been made in two basic bowl designs – the more common with a raised lip around the perimeter of the compartments allowing the cover and base rims to meet flush, and the less often seen with an unglazed edge with a cover wider than the base such that the cover rim closes over the base rim. This bowl appears to be of the latter design. Glaze overflow into the areas of the unglazed rim is proof that the bowl is unaltered and follows its original design. An example of another sweetmeats bowl, also Wanli mark and period, of similar size and decorated in birds and flowers in a rockery garden can be found in Sotheby’s New York sale, 22MAR2011, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art from the J. T. RARE SILVER GROUND BLUE WHITE FLORAL FORM DISH, YONGZHENG MARK AND PERIOD China, Qing dynasty, Yongzheng period, 1723-1736 Dimensions: 4 3/4”(12.1cm) W, 7/8”(2.1cm) H Shallow dish with rounded side, no depression in the cavetto, foliate rim in the form of multi-petalled flower, the cavetto with 10 petals to the outer ring, 10 to the inner and surrounding a central roundel of 8 petals. The two outer rings each painted in flowers and lingzhi sacred fungus in underglaze cobalt blue, the surrounding area unusually enamelled in silver. the exterior similar with two bands of petals of florals and lingzhi, the base with a six character mark of Yongzheng in underglaze blue within a double ring, and of the period. Silver ground enamel decoration is a rarity in wares from the Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen and very few examples are noted, although it seems to have been somewhat more common though still rare in export wares. It is possible that the later colour change of the enamel to a darker tone was seen as unsuitable and the use of it no longer attempted after the early Qianlong period. The dense overlapping petal form of the dish has precursors in Kangxi examples, possibly influenced by Kraal export wares, and the flower petal motif was certainly popularized in export tea wares during the Yongzheng period and into the Qianlong period. For the decorative style, please see a handled small bowl, Yongzheng mark and period with yellow ground around the cobalt blue painted flowers and lingzhi, in Sotheby’s London, sale 4NOV2020 Lot 1. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/imperial-porcelain-a-private-collection/a-rare-yellow-ground-blue-and-whitehandled-cup

Celadon and Russet Jade Crane and Lotus Hat Finial China, Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 Dimensions: 2”(5 cm) H, 2”(5 cm) W The stone of celadon on one side and partially to the interior, the reverse brown to grey and russet tones also seen in the base. Deeply and well carved and pierced with a group of cranes feeding and standing amid large lotus leaves and other plants, the stalks of which form a forest rising up to a protective dome. The base flat without concavity and with four pairs of arched holes for securing the finial. There are surprisingly few Ming paintings showing the exact use of this style of hat finial, likely because this type of large finial belongs on the high domed and brimmed military hat, not the official’s court hat which usually only hat a flat jade button. A rare example of this can be seen in a Korean portrait of Lee (Yi) Sam ca 1700 now in the Baekje Military Museum, most recently displayed in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (see articale Asian Art Newspaper, Sept. 2021). https://asianartnewspaper.com/korean-portraiture/#prettyPhoto The 4 pairs of small holes to the base would have been used to secure the finial directly to the dome of the hat or as seen in the Korean example, possibly on to a precious metal armature in which case it seems most likely that the holes were for wires rather than thread or cords. For the type, see a similar treatment of cranes and lotus in a pale celadon hat finial dated Ming dynasty can be seen in Sotheby’s New York sale 22JUN2021, Lot 94 and in a celadon and russet example in Christie’s London sale of 10NOV2011, Lot 10006. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/the-hundred-antiques-fine-decorative-asian-art/a-reticulated-pale-celadon-jade-hat-finial-ming https://www.christies.com/lot/a-celadon-and-russet-carved-jade-finial-5499514/?intObjectID=5499514&lid=1

154 100 DEER MING STYLE SILK PAINTING China, Qing, 18th century (note apocryphal Qianlong period seals) Dimensions: 62 1/4”(158 cm) L, 38”(97cm) L Watercolor on Silk, Framed The theme of ‘one hundred deer’ appears to be an innovation of the Wanli reign, and carries numerous auspicious messages. Traditionally the deer is an emblem of immortality in China, believed to live to a very great age. The animal successfully foraged for lingzhi and was believed to store the fungus’s power within its antlers, which then became prized for their medicinal use. The deer is also associated with official salary, as the two words are homophonous, hence images of ‘one hundred deer’ are representative of ‘one hundred promotions. In addition to its auspicious messages, the scene on this jar, which continues around the whole vessel as if on a handscroll, may also be of the imperial gardens or hunting parks where deer and other exotic animals were known to reside. Ming emperors spent much time in the imperial Western Park, adjacent to the Forbidden City, which had been reconstructed at the beginning of the Ming dynasty and renovated to resemble an immortal land under the direction of the Jiajing Emperor, who moved there in 1542.

FAMILLE ROSE YONGZHENG EMPEROR PORTRAIT VASE China, Republican Period, 20th century Dimensions: 5 7/8”(14.8 cm) H,1”(2.5 cm) Rim dia Of inverted baluster vase form with splayed foot and elongated ovoid body rising to a tapered mouth and rounded gilt rim, The base painted with over-glaze enamel blue key fret and hex diaper pattern, the rim with a ruyi band. The body painted in over-glaze blue and famille rose palette with a costume portrait of the Yongzheng emperor as a Persian Warrior hunting peacocks. The base marked with an apocryphal four character mark of Yongzheng in over-glaze blue enamel. An unusual vase, the portrait is taken from a series of 14 portraits of the Yongzheng emperor in costume guises now in the Palace Museum, Beijing which includes the emperor as a Daoist sage controlling a dragon, as a fisherman, as a Mongol lord, as a Tibetan monk, in European costume and wig hunting a tiger, in Turkish costume offering a peach to a monkey, and the subject of this vase – as a barefoot Persian or Indian hunter / bowman admiring a peacock in flight. He is dressed in a sleeved blue tunic wrapped with a stole and wears wide culottesproudly showing off gold bracelets and anklets and a large gold hoop earring. The crown is similar to a type often seen in Rajasthan miniature of the 1600’s to 1700’s, for Rajput kings and Hindu gods and avatars such as Krishna or Rama. The vase is a Republican period pastiche, not copying any Yongzheng period original, and in fact, it would have to post date the earliest publishing of album, possibly in the 1920’s. This would match the dating of the first examples of the “inverted guanyinping” the inverted Kangxi-style bottle vase which this represents.
