UNUSUAL GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE MAHASIDDHA YOGI VIRUPA TIBETO-CHINESE, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions 6” (15 cm) H
Standing in Alidhasana to the right on a single lotus base, clad only in a tiger skin loin cloth, with a serpent necklace, bracelets, armlets and anklets, his large head with prodigious curly hair, the right hand raised and pointing in the standard iconography of the Mahasiddha, and the left lowered possibly originally grasping an object or emblem. Earrings with hardstone cabochons. The great teacher, Virupa / Virupaksa was a 7th – 8th century eastern Indian yogi and the source of a number of important teaching cycles of Tibetan Buddhism, largely held in the Sakya monastic tradition. His signature full head of curly hair is unmistakable, he is normally rotund but seated in a yoga position, always with right hand raised in a teaching mudra. It is quite rare to depict him standing although early images of the 13th and 14th century at times show him thus. This may be a syncretic form – perhaps connected with Mahakala, Acala or Vajrapani who normally assume this pose, a connection which is also suggested by the serpent necklace.

Set on an oblong flat base with two cast tangs. The stand 20th century in brass. The heavy set of the body, wide yet benign face and the scarves forming the mandorla behind the head are strongly suggestive of an early dating for this figure of the vidhyaraja (guardian king of light) and dharmapala (guardian of the Buddhist Dharma) Acala / Achala. Compare with an un-gilt bronze figure of Achala, dated to 14th century with wider mandorla created by the sacred scarves, slightly larger at 6 ½ in. SHUILU ZHAI PAINTING DAOIST GUARDIAN (WANG YUANSHUAI) CHINA, MING DYNASTY, JIAJING PERIOD (1521-1567) Dimensions 59” (150 cm) x 29 ¾” (75.6 cm)
The Daoist Deity Marshal Wang (Wang Yuanshuai) depicted as a guardian warrior, in a martial stance balancing to the right, right hand raised with a mace-sword, and the left at chest height in a fist with a single finger protruding, the fiery red face under a jewelled yellow cap is directed at the viewer, but his gaze focuses towards the right in all three of his eyes. Dressed in armour with sacred scarves flying and sashes of embroidery and jewels, a red plaque with gold lettering hanging from his belt inscribed cixin zhongliang. The back of the head with a flaming halo and multi-coloured clouds surround the scene. The identity of this rare depiction is made clear by the hanging placard – cixin zhongliang (Red heart, Loyalty and Virtue) which was bestowed on Marshal Yuan by the Jade Emperor according to legend. Wang is seen as a wrathful and powerful protector, able to crush evil demons and spirits. One of the few properly identified depictions of the Marshal with placard can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which shows him balanced on a flaming wheel, and fortunately retains its dedicatory inscription by the painter “Painted by order of the Imperial concubine (huang guifei) Shen, in the beginning of summer of the renyin year of JiaJing [1542].” (New York, Metropolitan Museum: Taoism and the Arts of China, Stephen Little. 2000). https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/41474 The vivid colours of the costume and clouds suggest the painting belongs in the category of Shui Lu Zhai – Buddhist purification ritual paintings, or its counterpart in Daoist Jing ritual. These large public spectacles which could take days to complete included ceremonies in which practitioners and priests were brought into the presence of Buddhas, gods and demons in painting form, which accounts for the need for vibrancy in the painting and colours and the very large format. The clouds add to the other-worldly nature of the ritual setting, as would candles and incense.

BRONZE FIGURE OF DAOIST DEITY – ZHENWU / XUANDI
CHINA, MING DYNASTY, 15-16TH CENTURY Dimensions 12” (30 cm) H Seated with legs pendant on an oblong base and angled semi-circular throne, barefoot but wearing elaborate armour with lion heads at knees and taotie mask cuirass, hints of a robe and sacred scarves flying from his shoulders. The face serene, brushed back hair and well coiffed moustache and beard, right hand possibly originally holding a weapon, the left hand in a typical hand signal peculiar to the guardian warriors depicted in the late Ming dynasty. A tortoise and snake at his feet two of his standard symbols. This powerful protector deity of Daoism connected with the North direction and as such is Heidi (the black emperor) is more commonly known as Xuanwu or Xuandi, but more formally as Zhenwudadi (真武大帝 “Truly Valiant Great Emperor”) or Zhenwu. He was particularly connected with the Ming imperial like as having supposedly provided some assistance to Zhu Di, the future Yongle Emperor in the Jingnan Conflict which resolved the dynastic succession in his favour in 1402. From Yongle’s accession to the throne Zhenwu would be revered by the Ming Imperial line through to the end of the Ming dynasty, but his worship waned in the Qing dynasty and would be continued largely only by Southern and diaspora Han communities in Southeast Asia. Compare with a larger Ming dynasty bronze Zhenwu in Christies NY, 15MAR2015 Lot 3205 in which the martial figure is shown in flowing robes with dragon reliefs over armour, but maintains the left hand finger sign and bare feet which maintain his iconography. https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5880237

MONKEYS - QIAN SONGYAN (1898 – 1985) CHINA, 20TH CENTURY Dimensions 53 ½” x 26 3/8” (136 x 67 cm)
Ink and colour on paper, of two older monkeys resting by a rocky stream while 3 younger monkeys play in the vines above. Signed upper left corner – Qian Songyan, and dated in Chinese numbers 1960. Two seals of the artist. The theme of monkeys would appear to be unique to this painting, and though among his landscapes and still lives there are the odd study of cats, camels, fish, quite a few birds including a large work packed with birds sold in China Guardian HK 03APR2013, no other monkeys appear in his paintings among those published. And yet, like many of his contemporaries who were not particularly famed for monkeys, e.g. Fan Zeng, Yang Shanshen, even Chen Chi-kwan (Chan Qikuan) all played with the theme of monkeys in at least one known painting. 1960 would represent the last few years of his teaching in Wuxi and the year he was appointed director of the Jiangsu Chinese Painters Academy and vice-president of the Chinese Arts Society in Nanjing. Perhaps these events and his travels in 1959 with Yu Tongfu, Song Wenzhi, Wei Zixi, and Zhang WenJun and in 1960 Fu Baoshi, Yaming, Song Wenzhi and Wei Zixi pushed him to experiment with unfamiliar subjects, or paint what he saw on his travels, i.e. the monkeys. The hands in a rare mudra possibly a form of dharmacakra mudra (protecting the Wheel of the Buddha law), with hands one above the other as if creating a wheel or pearl of wisdom (ratna) or protecting something in the space in between. The hair in a high chignon above a serene face with downcast eyes, an elaborate pierced tiara with flame points and curls, and the remains of the hair falling in three tresses over the shoulders. Faint traces of lacquer gilding in areas. Base with incise 3 lines, possibly Chinese number 3. Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Chinese. Dashizi) whose name means “one who has attained great power” is one of the oldest Bodhisattva of the Buddhist pantheon, and traditionally attends Amitabha Buddha along with Avalokitesvara (Guanyin), forming a standard trio seen from the 6th century onwards in China. In China, however, Dashizi depicted as the focus of a statue or painting is rare however, being eclipsed by the vastly more popular and well known Guanyin / Guanshiyin, and indeed in many museums and collections Dashizi is often mistaken for Guanyin. The more common mudra (hand gesture) of Dashizi is with left hand in the lap in meditation (dhyanamudra) and the right raised in teaching (vitarkamudra) or coming in peace (abhayamudra) and often supporting the stem of a lotus. In this case, the right has been lowered covering the left with a space between. Compare with a similar image dated 16th – 17th century and also with traces of gilt-lacquer remaining with hands in the more traditional mudra in Sotheby’s New York, sale 15MAR2017 lot 552. https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2017/important-chinese-art-n09662/lot.552.html

TRANSITIONAL BLUE AND WHITE ‘FIGURAL’ DOUBLE GOURD VASE CHINA, TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, 1640-1650 Dimensions 13 ½” (34.5 cm) H
The lower bulb with a scholar official in a garden scene with attendants, the reverse with a palm and rockery garden, the upper bulb with a seated scholar in a garden setting below stylized tulip sprays and astrological designs. The elegant silhouette of this style of double gourd vase coupled with the clean firing of subtly toned underglaze cobalt blue puts it with a number of examples which are traditionally dated 1640-50 and termed “Transitional” as they span the chaotic last years of the Ming and first few years of the newly established Qing dynasty. Throughout the early 17th century with less court supervision in the production of porcelains in Jingdezhen, painters were free to experiment increasingly with new designs, many borrowed from the woodblock prints found in the popular literature of the day. Translating from flat single page prints to the continuous expanse of a round vase, however meant that at some point the print ends. The late Ming tendency from the 1620’s onward was to create cliffs or a wall of clouds forming to end the scene. Things became more sophisticated in the ensuing decades as can be seen in this case where the scene flows into palms and other plants and becomes a water and cloud feature which bridges to a cliff at the right of the procession of figures. As well, a new interplay has been introduced by joining the action of the lower scene where a scholar official waves perhaps to the upper scene figure, suggesting upper and lower figures in the narrative are actually facing each other. Compare with a related vase of similar dating 1640-1650 with a related though denser arrangement of figures from Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Christie’s New York, 15MAR2015, Lot 3535. https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5872028

The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw or refuse any lot from sale at any time, move the bidding backwards or forwards in any way he or she may decide, change the order of the lots, divide any lot or combine any two or more lots, or reopen or continue the bidding even after the hammer has fallen. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. Unless otherwise indicated, all lots are subject to an unpublished reserve price below which the auctioneers is not obligated to sell the item, and which may be changed at any time prior to the actual sale by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. While we send out invoices by mail and/or email after the auction, we do not accept responsibility for telling you whether or not your bid was successful. If you have bid by written bid, you should contact us by telephone or in person as soon as possible after the auction to get details of the outcome of your bid to avoid having to pay unnecessary storage charges. The successful bidder
shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to payment of the whole or any part of the purchase price requested by the auctioneer, failing which the auctioneer in his sole discretion may cancel the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. 9.
