BRIDGE OVER RAINHA RIVER
jury’s opinion: “Besides the small scale, the project is about an contemplative bridge / plaza, carefully inserted at the landscape context.” site:
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (Av Padre Leonel Franca s/n) development: 2015 — 2016 execution: december 2016 — february 2017
The bridge project arose from the university’s demand for pedestrians passages, since the pre–existing ones attended mainly to vehicles, becoming dangerous for the public. The original design foresaw a bench along it’s structure, facing the Rainha river for a greater interaction with water — a privileged element that ends up being under–used in PUC-Rio’s campus. It’s width and angulation are result of this “dolce far niente” approach, that seeks to create leisure and resting spaces on the bridge, so the alumni can enjoy the water sounds and view comfortably.

SUKKAH PAVILION
4x assembled so far / seasonal pavilion designed for the Jewish community
WHAT IS SUKKAH?
The sukkah is an kind of hut, made by the Jewish people to represent the tents where they kept for 40 years while on exodus on the desert — when the Hebrew people were nomad, and used to have their daily meals underneath the traditional hut’s foliage roofing, at open air.
Lasting 7 days, usually circa october, the Sucot festival is celebrated by Jewish people all around the world, with huts being assembled in several places like house gardens, public spaces, synagogue courtyards, schools and universities.

project exhibited on Ludwigsburg Museum Stuttgart, Germany. — november 2017
1. ELEVATION ON PERSPECTIVE
The migrant is a person who moves physically away from his home due to a variety of reasons. From Latin, migrans means in movement. Escaping corruption, unemployment, poverty, conflict, war, environmental destruction, or even willing to go and find new opportunities, these travelers leave behind their communities in hope for a better, more secure life. They take many forms — expatriates, immigrants (legal or illegal), asylum seekers, refugees, workers, pilgrims, nomads. Whatever we choose to call them, one thing is common to all — the loss of home and all things that go with it: a shelter, a job, a livelihood, a community.
The structure itself has a migrant nature. Its interactive ability to be assembled and transported easily is key, and ensures an important performative aspect of the design. We seek to imagine a structure that, once assembled, can grow, shift, change and transform as the user needs, being able to build a community spirit through its space and function; That allows nomads, residents, refugees and natives to interact through a meeting place, a place of rest, a place of integration. Do we visualize our society as a completely free space where boundaries and borders no longer exist?
Are those boundaries and frontiers necessary? A wall symbolizes and expresses the attitude towards the definition of public and private, inside and outside, mine and yours. This definition is necessary, even natural, in any social environment. However, its expression is what defines how aggressive or how radical that boundary is. It should not be violent. It should be an element of integration rather than division. It is a system that serves not only a single purpose for the user, but also capable of promoting relationships. In the age of communication and the global exchange of cultures, walls must unite people, not separate them. As such, this project is a re–reading of the frontier — it attracts rather than separates. It questions the physical boundaries and proposes to transform the typology of a wall from a spatial divider into a functional space of infrastructure, which can provide from shelter and sense of community, to commercial and cultural activities. It promotes inclusion, diversity, and demonstrates the welcoming ritual. It becomes a kind of agora for exchange and expression trough various media, such as art, music, dance, speech, and the body itself. It is a place for both entertainment and politics to thrive. In our community, the act of expressing ourselves must be as natural as eating or drinking. Politics, democracy, entertainment, celebrations and the like, simultaneously create the spaces of community life.
13
The proposal seeks to challenge this phenomenon of displacement through an inquiry into what defines a community center, and how, through this space, one can rebuild shelter, security, integration, stability, communal sense and spirit.

The project interpretates the work of the belgian architect as being an solid extrusion onto a volume, based on a grid line pathway, creating a deconstructed maze as result. When bringing the concept to the project, the rythm is expressed through this grid of elements with the same height, generating an abstract story that marks the topography. As you walk the promenade, you understand the route as you watch the whole project before accessing it, amongst the trees’ top.
The design allows to cross from one side to another by a bridge, where you access directly the elevated lookout — a slope generated by the soil operations. The first underground level hosts a forest with leisure and relaxing areas, and the second hosts an amphiteather surrounded by water, that also works as emergency water dredge scape.

1. DAVID HOCKEY’S MISE EN SCENE DANS LE MONDE CONTEMPORAINE
The project starts from the analysis of the site context — an overpriced terrain in the most expensive neighborhood of Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, very well inserted regarding to commerce, security, health and leisure equipments. Even though Leblon is known for being a calm and quiet place, the Lagoa Barra road is part of a metropolitan scale ring that connects different zones of the city. The former use as a Military Police Battalion is rethought in an essay, aimed at maximizing the urbanity of the site through the integration between architecture, infrastructure and landscape.
We apply the concept in a cluster of proposed elements to activate the site, so it can reach its potential, setting aside the stigma of the barrier, and becoming recognized as a new centrality.

BEFORE / AFTER From the comparison between the percentage of built-up areas, internal roads and original unbuilt areas of the land, and those after the interventions, we noticed a small difference in the equalization of the three parameters. It is important to realize that the internal pathways have hardly changed from the original mesh. Moreover, the increase from 60% to 65% of undeveloped areas on the ground seems small, but the big difference between these two percentages is that previously this unbuilt area was almost mostly waterproof, concrete area. After the interventions, the vast majority of the unbuilt areas of the land became permeable, either by direct underground infiltration on rain gardens and dredges, or by the presence of drainage floors that help the stormwater runoff.

On architecture’s behalf, urbanity can occur through programmatic variability; on urbanism’s behalf, occurs in the overlap of spaces and their connections; on landscape’s behalf, acting as a functional element that seeks to treat water as part of the project and its surroundings.

cultural catalyst When we analyze the site surroundings, located in Santo Cristo, portuary area of Rio de Janeiro, we see a clear distinction between the new Porto Maravilha and the old Porto, and its old communities.
It is proposed an equipment that sews the two areas in order to meet vocations that the context itself presents us, such as a commerce area that serves not only the new Porto that is being installed, but also that generates a direct relationship with the local residents, both in terms of work and housing.

KUMIKI
Kumiki comes from a Japanese word which means to join wood. The term refers to the most varied forms of joinery in traditional woodworking, especially the threedimensional wooden puzzle pieces that come together and generate an extrinsic shape to the existing when separated. Based on this concept, the project seeks to apporach the program in order to fit the context where its inserted, with optimization as a principle. After performing several operations, all the apartments — of different typologies — fit and generate two main blocks. In this way, the circuation of the first three stories are turnt into one lecel access, due to the spatial organization of the other apartments — like a Tetris game.

The building is detached on one of it’s side to benefit from ventilation and natural lighting. The ground floor has a free plan as premise, so as to have space to be occupied in a common way by the residents. It is suggested to apply equipment according to the needs, such as bicycle racks, space for leisure, sports and etc., as well as the janitor’s studio is suggested to be converted into a common laundry. The grid that effectively demarcates the public and private space is only in the middle of the building, where you access the foyer and the elements of circulation, having a “social” entrance and a bathers / bicycles / motorcycle entrance on the side.
The place is very well integrated with regard to mobility, being fully integrated with all transport modals, having for example a metro station on the corner (5 minutes on foot), and several bus lines passing right in front.

winter station design competition entry, 2016 Woodbyne Beach Toronto, Canada
There was once a man who became unstuck in the world. He spent everyday looking to the horizon, he saw the endless flow of the waters, until the winter came. In his rest, he realized that there was much more to be seen. He saw the city marching into him, and he kept going. He saw a blinding brightness, so he looked through the window, and saw what might be what was taking over his head. He had the curios- ity, so he kept on going. There was no light, it was all darkness. Then, when he turns around, there it was. The endless landscape has been put into a frame. It was tamed, the curiosity in his mind has gone. The spatial experience has made a catalysis in his head, and all of a sudden, it became the three rooms. When the man awakes, the cluster becomes clear to him.
