laying the foundations If last year was all about the BB and CC cream, then this season sees a return to foundation. The introduction of BB creams celebrated a very nude type of beauty and this trend has carried over into a new wave of foundation. Miracle Air de Teint from Lancôme (€39) builds on the undetecable but absolute coverage first seen in Teint Miracle. Likewise, Chanel’s Perfection Lumiere Velvet (€39.50) delivers a soft focus effect which softens and blurs the appearance of visible pores and wrinkles. Dior has gone one step further and taken foundation to a new level with the launch of Capture Totale Serum de Teint (€ (€80), part of the Capture Totale Dr Dreamskin range. A foundation ba based on 15 years of stem cell re research, it offers chameleon-like co coverage, adapting to all skin ty types. Elizabeth Arden Flawless Fi Finish Perfectly Nude Makeup SP SPF 15 also reduces the appearance of pores and gives a lightweight, lumi luminous finish.
DO YOUR PART
Kiehl’s have joined forces with Alicia Keys and her charity Keep a Child Alive to introduce a limited edition bottle of Midnight Recovery Concentrate (€42). For every bottle sold, Kiehl’s will donate 100% of proceeds to the charity, which aims to help those living with HIV in the developing world. To date, the charity has provided services to over 300,000 families in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and India. Go Kiehl’s.

MADE TO MEASURE
It’s the fear of turning orange that puts us off fake tan. But Clarins new Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Tan (€23.50) moisturises and slowly tans the skin, stopping at the perfect shade for you, so no more tell-tale tide marks and no more orange skin. We like!

Are you using the right products to suit your lifestyle?
If you struggle to clear a window in your diary to cleanse, tone and moisturise then it’s important you choose multi-tasking products that work as hard as you do. Clarins Double Serum (€69.50) brings together two age-defying formulas in one groundbreaking serum while Kiehl’s Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream (€49) will ensure skin’s elasticity remains in tip-top condition as you age. Tackling skin’s elasticity before it becomes a visible problem is the best way to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores, according to Dr Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Product Development Consulting Dermatologist. Before rushing out the door in the morning apply a product which tackles signs of ageing as well as protecting the skin against environmental aggressors. Shiseido’s Future Solutions LX Total Protection Emulsion (€290) does just that through a unique synergy of Skingenecell 1P and premium sansho extract.
PAGE 34
SLEEP DEPRIVED
We all know that our body repairs itself while we sleep. Over time, a lack of sleep results in a grey complexion and puffy eyes. However, our skin is most receptive to renewing itself at night, so choose products that will replace lost dehydration almost immediately, like Chanel’s Le Lift (€107). This new launch contains 3.5 DA, an exclusive active ingredient based on patented technology which stimulates the production of youth proteins, helping to balance skin while restoring suppleness and elasticity at the skin’s own pace. Likewise, the latest launch from the iconic Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream range is the new Nighttime Miracle Moisturiser (€40) which has been proven to intensely hydrate the skin by sealing in moisture through a mixture of petrolatum and shea butter. As well as tackling complexion problems, this super product also contains lavender to soothe the senses and calm the mind.
TECHNOLOGY FIEND
Our obsession with social media, email and online shopping is fast becoming a concern for our skin. Squinting at small screens for long periods of time will eventually result in fine lines developing around our eyes. To combat this, opt for products which promise to firm and regenerate skin, like Lancôme Renergie French Lift (€115). Truly groundbreaking, this product offers results through massage and technology normally only achieved through surgery to lift and tighten the face. By mixing cell biology and active ingredients it achieves a skin tightening effect, unique to each and every user. Touching gadgets like mobile phones and then touching our skin also moves bacteria from one to the other, resulting in breakouts. Clinique’s Anti Blemish Solutions Range (from €18) includes a cleansing bar, foam and blemish gel to keep the blighters at bay.
ARNOTTS MAGAZINE
COMMUTE TO WORK
Whether you walk, cycle or get the bus to work, environmental aggressors are attacking your skin every time you step out the door. We know about the importance of SPF and protecting ourselves against UVA and UVB rays, but what about pollution? If you don’t have the time, or the inclination, to use a separate SPF, then opt for products which protect your skin as well as treating signs of ageing. Philosophy’s Time in a Bottle (€69.90) does just this, bringing together for the first ever time an exclusive skin DNA renewing complex with a high potency Vitamin C8 activator. The result is a serum which improves skin’s natural renewal process from all major types of DNA damage. Likewise, Origins Plantscription Powerful Lifting Cream (€69) promises to boost skin’s barrier strength by 68% while also visiblyy lifting skin through ugh a combination of Indian Commiphora with the power wer lift complex.

the nude face

The no make-up nude face appeared at dozens of shows during Fashion Week, including Alberta Ferretti, Vanessa Bruno and Giambattista season Make-up Valli, and is one of the biggest trends this season. artist Christine Lucignano explains that getting your skin in tip-top condition is key to achieving this look. So prep your skin with a pore minimiser before applying make-up to achieve a truly flawless look. When it comes to applying foundation and concealer, Christine says, “Correcting imperfections doesn’t mean using lots of foundation and concealer. Used the right way, products can help hide not only your imperfections but also your tracks. To give modernity to the ‘nude’ make-up look, don’t go too far down the beige/concealer look on your lips. Your lip colour choice and texture are key.”

Fo Forget any idea you had that black eyeliner ha an and flicks were just for wi winter. From dramatic ko kohl to sleek feline fli flicks, black liner was all over the runways for spring 2014. Of course, deciding to make liner the main focus of your look means allowances have to be made elsewhere. A heavy eye needs balance on the face, so while it may be tempting to skip the blusher, make-up artist Christine Lucignano believes it’s an essential product to stop the look becoming too hard. A cream blusher will blend beautifully into the skin and look like a natural flush. Likewise, don’t be afraid to embrace the new neon lip with this look. When it comes to complexion, Christine says, “This look seems almost make-up free and perfectly even. Your foundation formula is almost more important than your colour choice.”

Michelle Smith Founder of Milly
Fashion designer Michelle Smith of Milly has created a brand that epitomises a mix of cool, ol, clean cuts and bold, sporty, yet super-feminine fin finishes. Michelle’s impeccable eye for detail draws inspiration from sources as diverse as Am American sportswear and classi classic Parisian atelier tech techniques. Today she gracefully juggles motherhood with a thriving business as Milly co continues it’s global reign as a cult favourite, worn by fashion el elites from Beyoncé to Kate Middle Middleton. Fans of the br brand love Mi Michelle’s inspired use of luxuriou luxurious fabrics and rich prints that capt capture this season’s edgy oriental trends.
HOW DI DID YOU GET INTO FASHION? I knew I want wanted to be a designer from the time I wa was a small child, sitting on the kitche kitchen floor sketching. In college, I studied at NYC’s
Fashion Institute of Technology and put myself through school while working at the Hermès boutique. This led me to write to the President of Hermès requesting an internship in Paris, which I was granted. Following on from that, I interned with Christian Dior Haute Couture and Louis Vuitton in Paris. When I returned to New York, I launched Milly as an advanced contemporary collection. I noticed there was a gap in the market for quality, fashion-forward styles at a price point that was affordable to all.
WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME? I design and manufacture my collection in New York City—my showroom and design studio are based in the heart of the Garment District. I live on the Upper East Side, not far from my flagship boutique on Madison Avenue. This year, we opened a boutique in the resort town of East Hampton as well, which has a minimalist, beachy vibe.
WHO WOULD YOU NAME AS YOUR STYLE ICON?
“I love Kate Moss, and Beyoncé – their style is always evolving and they aren’t afraid to take risks.” TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW SPRING SUMMER 2014 COLLECTION? My signature design style is based on transforming classics with an edge of modernity. I have always loved colour, print and luxurious European fabrics – this is the DNA that Milly is built on and my collection has evolved over the years. I like to ground colour with a basis of black and white.
ARNOTTS MAGAZINE
WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE WEARING YOUR CLOTHES? I love Emma Watson at the moment – she is such a talented actress and she has an edge – I would love to dress her in my clothes.
IS IT TRUE YOU ONCE GLOVESHOPPED WITH JACKIE KENNEDY? Ha! There is some truth in that statement – when I worked at the Hermès shop on Madison Avenue, I helped her choose a pair of gloves. That was an unforgettable fashion moment for me.
COULD YOU SHARE WITH US ONE OR TWO OF YOUR STYLE SECRETS? I’m obsessed with statement coats! Throw them over anything and ke a you’re guaranteed to make great first impression.
S/S 14
As we welcome cult American label – Milly – to the Arnotts womenswear department, we meet up with the inspiring designer behind the brand: A range that has become known for exquisite prints, rich colours and luxurious fabrics.
MILLY Mini Bag, €190
WHO HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED SEEING WEARING G YOUR DESIGNS? I love music and I’m a huge fan of Beyoncé and her sister, Solange Knowles, who both have worn Milly recently. They each have a distinct sense of personal style, so it was fun to see them in Milly.
