Raoul's Autumn/Winter 14 Collection: Graphic and minimalistic, yet extremely feminine

O

ver the last few years, Raoul has been creating a buzz with its sleek take on contemporary and affordable luxury womenswear, proposing tailored pieces with uncompromising standards of design and quality. The Fall Winter 14 Collection features mini shift dresses in jersey and leather, wool bouclé coats, bonded satins and matching prints such as the blanche draped peplum top and matching pencil skirt; reflecting a strong graphic sensibility and an obsession with regularity, order and craft, at all times.

The different colours, fabrics and techniques used in the Collection – such as the black & ivory, diamond-shaped graphics, gradating plaid wool and the metallic floral motif – all work together resulting in a consistent and considered collection of iconic pieces. A range of accessories designed by Raphael Young and made in Italy completes Raoul’s look: from the perfect everyday bag such as the Birdy Tote or the Miss Pogany, the evening clutches or the day-to-night signature Blake Bag.

Raoul’s refined aesthetic evolves from season to season with thoughtful references and finesse into edgy and sophisticated collections, drawing inspiration from art & architecture, as well as from the Raoul woman: multitasking, confident and accomplished; but also fresh, witty and yet definitely a lady who curates an easy, vivid style that's always perfectly pitched. Every collection is subject to vigorous refinement until each piece has a place in the Raoul woman's wardrobe of hardworking favourites.

Paris in the fall F

all for this season’s autumn/winter looks at Lauren Ralph Lauren featuring three key themes: Indigo Plantation, American Southwest and L’Avenue. Parisian sophistication meets menswear chic in Lauren’s standout fall story L’Avenue which channels femininity with a slightly masculine twist. Think Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face and you’re there. The look features houndstooth on woven dresses, slim pea coats and ruffled georgette skirts as well as charcoal suits which mix fine tailoring with elegant knit dressing – boyish looks that are still super feminine. Power dress in a black leather fit-and-flare dress with leather sleeves for added edge but softened by a wool blazer. Wear with heavy eyeliner and a knockout lipstick to keep the look sexy. L’Avenue also features purple and indigo, three-quarter length shirts and dresses that provide the perfect backdrop for black leather trim to shine. In a modern take on the famous Audrey style, faux leather leggings with a ponte back create a sleek silhouette to balance new boxy tops that are fashionable and flattering on every body type. Channel Audrey’s confidence to make these boyish looks shine.

Beauty news A round-up of the beauty launches worth splurging on

MARVELLOUS MEDICINE THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER It was Estée Lauder who famously said: “Three minutes is all beauty should ever take,” and so it stands to reason that the brand bearing her name continues to promote that ethos, with its 3 Minute Beauty Signature Services. The complimentary service aims to refresh beauty looks by focusing on skin, eyes and lips through six different categories – our favourite is fatigue fighter. Make your booking at the Estée Lauder counter, Arnotts, Tel: 01 805 0499, Ex 107.

French brand Nuxe has used its expertise in floral cosmetics to create an exciting new product, Nuxe Merveillance Expert Day Cream (€40). Aimed at women over forty, including all skin types, this correcting cream for visible lines contains daylily, a plant which has never before been used in cosmetics. Targeting three key skin proteins – collagen, elastin and vimentin – skin is instantly smoothed and moisturised, becoming firmer as wrinkles are filled in.

GLOSS OVER SONIC POWER As owners of one of the world’s most successful skincare companies, Clinique is well placed to develop yet another revolutionary skincare system. The new Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush (€89) is based on the premise that skin is better prepared to repair itself when it is cleansed of dirt, oil and pollution. It also stands to reason that clean skin is better prepped to receive products which can then get straight to work without having to be absorbed through blocked pores. Go on, try it!

We've all had problems with drying lipsticks and sticky glosses, but now Chanel has brought the two together and released Rouge Allure Gloss (€32). A gloss that acts like a lipstick, Rouge Allure Gloss has the deep pigment of a lipstick with the high shine of a gloss. Available in 11 shades.

EYE EYE Signs of environmental and internal stress generally appear around the eyes first, often in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Using high-end technologies, these new products promise to tackle puffiness and wrinkles at the very source. First up, Lancôme’s Génifique Yeux Youth Activating Eye Cream (€52) promises to tackle fatigue before it turns into visible signs of ageing, based on a combination of optical technology and a blend of active ingredients. Philosophy has followed up one of the greatest launches of last year with a specialised, | ARNOTTS A W 2014

first of its kind, eye formulation. Time in a Bottle for Eyes (€42.50) is the first preventative and corrective serum to target problems at the source through a mix of active ingredients which boost collagen production, drain, detoxify and protect cell’s DNA. It leaves eyes looking smoother, firmer and luminous. Finally, Chanel’s Le Lift Firming Eye (€75) is based on 12 years of research and is a unique formula capable of reprogramming the skin's innermost mechanisms through the study of epigentics. BEAUTY

lowing skin has been around for the past few seasons, but it’s only now that beauty houses are getting serious about achieving it through product rather than natural skin condition. The new generation of foundations and primers all combine illuminators with silicone formulations, meaning product settles into the skin, instead of just sitting on top of it. However, for make-up artist Christine Lucignano, the real secret to achieving this look is to apply product with your fingers, specifically your ring finger as it has the least pressure. Christine explains that using other fingers can cause redness, which is the antithesis of the look. When it comes to eyes, it’s about smoulder instead of smokey and using a neutral palette instead of full on black, which can be too harsh for pinker skintones. Christine says: “It’s about giving some highs and lows to the eyes with a neutral palette, so highs on the inner part of the eye just under the brow bone and lows closer to the lash line. This look is all about the skin so the eyes should just echo that.” The same applies to the lips and blush, they should echo the skintone according to Christine and not jar. So opt for warmer nude tones of pinks and cantaloupe with a velvet rather than matte finish.

escribed by make-up artist Christine Lucignano as “little spices”, this look takes inspiration directly from Paris and is based on someone who makes up her own rules. This woman uses products to add what she doesn’t have while still accentuating her best aspects. The base is a little bit heavier but completely matte as all the attention is on the eyes and lips. Christine explains that while the rule of thumb is considered to be eyes or lips, there’s nothing wrong with doing both, as long as they both sit at the same level. One should not overpower the other; after all they’re sisters who should complement and balance each other out. Shades of plum appeared at several a/w shows, so Christine suggests using a pop of plum around the eyes and paying attention to the brows. “They don’t have to be altered,” she says, “but pay them some love.” The feline flick is going nowhere, and so for those of us who struggle, Christine suggests starting with a blendable eyeshadow and a good brush which allows us find our natural curve without the need to be precision perfect. When it comes to lips, Christine recommends that a touch of gloss is more modern than a completely matte finish and suggests that there’s no harm mixing two or three colours together to get the perfect shade and texture.

MICHAEL KORS NAIL COLLECTION, ¤20

Dior has merged twodimensional light with advances in skincare to create a foundation that amplifies radiance, neutralises colour and corrects unevenness. A star buy for sure.

Designed to reflect the three sides of a woman’s life, the new Nail Collection from Michael Kors is comprised of nine shades in three categories: sporty, sexy and glam. Our favourite? Femme, a vivid blue shade that’s pleasingly dramatic.

BENEFIT THEY'RE REAL PUSH UP LINER, ¤25

Designed for ease and perfect feline flicks, this liner’s nib distributes product as and when needed while also being angled, so even the novice amongst us can achieve perfect cat eyes. Once you’ve tried this liner there’s no going back.

CLARINS DOUBLE SERUM, ¤69.50

TOM FORD VELVET ORCHID, ¤94

The new version of Velvet Orchid is glamorous, bold and sweet. In a word: divine.

This created quite a stir when it was first launched and has gone on to become a cult product. Aimed at women in their late 20s, who are concerned with wrinkles, loss of firmness, lack of radiance, uneven skintone and visible pores, Double Serum is a must-have.

BOBBI BROWN LONG WEAR GEL SPARKLE, ¤30

KISS KISS LIPSTICK, GUERLAIN, ¤35

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its iconic Kiss Kiss lipstick, Guerlain has relaunched its iconic sculptural kiss with a sleeker more modern design. One to show off.

Top notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and myrrh make way for base notes of oudh, honey and tobacco. Once you close your eyes you could easily be in the depths of a spiced forest, as long as you ignore the rain outside! Layer the body lotion (€32) on after the body wash (€24) as you burn the candle (€49) for the ultimate in olfactory delight.

Combining liner with eyeshadow, this product can be layered to go from day to night meaning it’s now a make-up bag staple. The dual-ended brush and the high-end formulation mean that if you smudge when you meant to line it doesn’t matter, it looks just as good.

Nature V Nurture

Whatever your skincare inclination, this season there’ve been breakthroughs on both sides of the fence, which can only mean one thing, younger looking skin for all NATURAL & INTUITIVE

A

s we’ve become more and more aware of how the things we put into our bodies affect our health and overall wellbeing, it stands to reason that we’ve also started paying attention to what we put on our skin. After all, it too is absorbed into the system. However, organic products alone just can’t provide the anti-ageing solutions we’ve come to expect from our skincare, so big beauty houses have started paying attention. Instead of solely researching scientific ways to hold back the years, experts are now looking to nature for ingredients, which can work in conjunction with the latest technology to provide a skincare regime that’s naturally based but produces the same results as its more chemical counterparts. In addition to this, the fact that emotional stress and modern living have finally been recognised as contributory factors to skin degeneration shows that the future for skincare is bright. B ESP OKE A P P R OAC H It should come as no shock then that leading the field is French brand Chanel, which has been at the forefront of skincare for decades. Massage has long been used as a method of reminding skin’s architectural structure of where it should be, and now, using one product to provide personalised skincare is going even further. With Le Lift (€118), which incorporates products for skin, eyes and lips, Chanel is building on its work in epigenetics – a science that explores the theory that while our skin's future is predetermined at birth, environment, stress and diet | ARNOTTS A W 2014

all have a direct impact on gene expression and subsequently the synthesis of proteins responsible for youthful skin. Using the roots of tropical plant edulis, Chanel has found 3.5-DA which prevents youth proteins from becoming dormant, keeping skin at its optimal level of regeneration. The beauty of Le Lift is that the effect 3.5-DA is very much dependent on what your skin needs. Meaning it works at different levels for different people, essentially providing bespoke skincare. Following along the same lines and after more than 20 years of research, Shiseido is launching Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate (€85), a skincare product that actually boosts skin’s immunity and aids its ability to fight off aggressors. Our skin’s immunity is safeguarded by the Langerhans cell, which decrease over time due to environmental factors and emotional stress. However, it’s only recently that there has been scientific proof that emotional stress takes its toll on our appearance, making this product the first of its kind. Ultimune uses the properties of ginkgo biloba leaf extract along with perilla and wild thyme as the basis of its complex, which restores the Langerhans cell function, helping skin protect itself against both internal and external stressors as and when it’s needed.

SKINCARE

S K I N H E A LTH

Likewise, new Super Restorative Day Cream (€89.50) from Clarins is also based on a big discovery around skin health. After years of scientific research, Clarins discovered that once a woman turns 50, hormonal deficiencies impact her skin at an alarming rate; mostly affecting the metabolic rate of the fibroblast, the cell in charge of collagen production. Consequently, this cell no longer helps maintain youthful skin. So, in an effort to correct this, Clarins joined forces with ethnobotanist Jean-Pierre Nicolas to harness the replenishing properties of the African harungana plant. Extract from the harungana has the ability to boost the fibroblast, which in turn helps the skin repair itself and appear more lifted. Also harnessing the power of plants to combat modern living, is the Kiehl’s Hydro-plumping Re-texturizing Serum Concentrate (€49), which is based on the principle of enabling the skin to hydrate from within. A recent study discovered that age-related dehydration is becoming more of an issue among women, especially once we turn 30. Caused by an imbalance of moisture within the dermis, age-related dehydration makes skin more prone to showing signs of ageing. Plant-based glycerine and shiso leaf extract are combined in an innovative formulation to act as a moisture magnet, helping skin to anchor its own moisture at a deep level. » 41 |

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

F

or some, when it comes to skincare the ends justify the means and so using ingredients at the vanguard of modern technology is their ultimate goal. Well, actually their ultimate goal is to have the youngest skin possible, but to get there they’ll use the most progressive skincare available. Luckily, there’s a huge host of beauty houses pioneering advanced skincare regimes, all of which help skin to regenerate and recapture firmness, plumpness and that ever elusive youthful glow. Often, these products take some natural ingredients and harness their efficacy in a uniquely scientific way, and therein lies the difference. With no loyalty to remaining completely natural, some products are able to push past boundaries to provide supernatural results.

For example, Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum (€60) combines 37 patented discoveries to deliver custom care. Everybody has damaged skin, we have visible damage such as age spots, fine lines and wrinkles and then we have damage that has happened far below the surface. Whatever the cause, damaged skin sends out signals looking for help, and it’s these signals that Clinique’s latest launch responds to in order of need. A blend of collagen boosting peptides such as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Palmitoyl Oligopeptide help push up wrinkles from below, while moisture levels are maintained through hyaluronic acid, barley extract and wheat germ extract. These ingredients are combined in a sensitive way to ensure that whatever signal is received first, is answered correctly. Likewise, Philosophy Miracle Worker Overnight (€52) has harnessed the power of algae and vitamins to bring together a night cream like no other. At the heart of this launch is the scientific research that there’s more to anti-ageing than environmental stressors. What the people at Philosophy discovered is that as we age, our skin accumulates increasing amounts of ageaccelerating proteins, known as progerin. When these progerins accumulate, they cause defects in the cell walls of the skin. These defects are what we’d recognise as wrinkles or fine lines. By working with the body’s own regeneration routine, this formulation is able to tackle accumulation and reduce visible signs of ageing.

SKINCARE

M OV I N G FO RWA R D While some brands look backwards and rework traditional ingredients, Lancôme is powering forward with Visionnaire LR 2412 (€74) which builds on an existing discovery. It was only three years ago that Lancôme made a breakthrough after 12 years of study with the discovery of the LR 2412 molecule, which is stronger than retinol but without any side effects. On the back of this, the brand launched Visionnaire and now, after further research, scientists have been able to double LR 2412’s efficacy by binding it with MDH jasmonate, a complex which helps the serum get through the skin’s compartments with ease. Also looking forward is Elizabeth Arden, with Flawless Future (€59), which works to counteract the effect stress has on skin at a deeply scientific level. Ceramides are the molecules which help keep skin healthy and support the all-important collagen matrix. However, as we age ceramides decrease and this reduction is heightened by stress. Likewise, stress also has a massive impact on telomeres, which prevent our DNA cells from fraying. Most cells can reproduce 50 times before the telomere becomes useless, however, stress reduces their strength which results in premature ageing. By formulating a serum high in ceramide and telomeres, Elizabeth Arden has found a way to halt the ageing process.

The clever people at Weekend Offender have come up with a solution to the usual panic, as you fumble for your ticket before you board the Luas. The Suarez jacket has a hidden pocket at the end of its jacket sleeve, in which to store your Leap card, so a swipe of your hand sees you on to public transport with no fuss. You can store your credit/laser card here too, using your hidden pocket for contactless payments. Suarez jacket, €160, Weekend Offender | 64

ON A HIGH Functionality, warmth and style are the core concepts behind Wrangler’s new autumn/winter offerings. Its special collection, Denim Performance, represents a new advancement in jeanswear inspired by technical clothing. The denim is woven with Thermolite, a fibre that traps air, which is then warmed by the body’s heat meaning greater insulation without any extra weight. Essentially these are jeans, but better, and they come in the brand’s most popular fits, like the relaxed taper-fit Greensboro. Outerwear includes parka coats and reversible down jackets with smart textiles and details such as special pockets for technology. Jacket, €425 TECHNOLOGY

LIFE CHANGING If you’re a fan of the ‘lived in’ look when it comes to denim, new Replay Laserblast L.I.F.E is your new go-to jeans brand. Not only does it have a distinctive vintage look, it’s the eco-friendly option too, using a process that reduces water consumption and utilises colour pigment of natural origins. Check out the two styles: slim fit Anbass and regular fit Waitom in a selection of fabric, treatment and wash options. From €155

JEAN GENIUS Diesel is raising the bar for active wear with its unique Jogg jeans. They look just like denim but the unique hybrid fabric, which also has jersey, means that they feel as comfortable as a pair of sweats. These are jeans to cycle, move, travel and dance in and be warned – you may never want to take them off. €200

BUILT FOR SPEED The life of an urban cyclist isn’t always easy, but when you’re making the effort to cut carbon emissions, you want your cycling garb to be as energy efficient as you are. Levi’s Commuter range is designed with the urban traveller in mind – the trousers, for example, have no extra pieces and they’re made out of reinforced, stretch anti-microbial fabric with a reflective cuff, as well as a belt loop to carry that all-important bike lock. The range expands to outerwear and t-shirts with reflective and waterproof features. Levi’s commuter chinos (pictured above with detail on the left), €105 | ARNOTTS A W 2014

THE LAST

WORD

Sofia Wallenstam FOU N DE R OF HOUSE OF DAGM A R

This season sees sophisticated Swedish fashion label, House of Dagmar arrive at Arnotts womenswear department. Created by three sisters and named for their grandmother, their collections marry glamour with exquisite tailoring. Youngest House of Dagmar sibling, Sofia, tells us about working alongside family and shares her style secrets It’s a family affair for House of Dagmar designers Kristina Tjäder, Karin Söderlind and Sofia Wallenstam, who launched House of Dagmar in 2005. The sisters, from the Swedish west coast city of Gothenburg, have created a label that embodies pure Scandi chic, counting Beyoncé and Swedish actress Noomi Rapace amongst its celebrity fans. Unconventional and elegant, arty and ontrend with a decided nod to tradition too, their designs celebrate femininity and form. Your label bears her name, how does your late grandmother Dagmar continue to inspire you? She was a fantastic person, always laughing and singing, spreading a lot of happiness and positive attitude around her. She also had a great sense of quality and that is something we have tried to bring into our company. She used to always sit on the sofa with my middle sister Kristina, who is Dagmar’s creative director and head designer today, and look at fashion magazines, then sew and construct the clothes herself. This is how Kristina first learned pattern making and sewing. What is the essence of House of Dagmar designs? Unconventional and sophisticated design. Who is the House of Dagmar typical woman? She is a woman who has a style that is perceived to come naturally, but with an aura of success, sensuality and attitude. | 72

The House of Dagmar woman has an aura of success, sensuality and attitude

She doesn’t want to compromise between being attractive and intellectual, either professionally or in private. Who or what inspires you? My friends and family; people in my surroundings. How does it feel when celebrities such as Beyoncé wear your clothes? Fantastic, in the way that they have so much to choose from and their choice is then Dagmar. We love it when strong, cool and intelligent women wear our clothes – famous or not. What is the working dynamic between you and your sisters? We actually have a great set-up and that is the reason why we started as well. Karin the oldest sister is CEO, Kristina is the designer and creative director FA S H I O N

and I’m the sales director. Our roles run into each other but we do not step on anyone’s toes. We love to work together which is of course why we started but I also think it’s great that we have our different responsibilities. Tell us about your autumn/winter collection? The a/w 2014 collection is about a shifted perspective where new dimensions and angles come into focus – mainly inspired by the cubistic works of Pablo Picasso. We explore different techniques; for example, punch needle and double knitting. The colour palette is also greatly inspired by the artist’s cubistic artworks and is dominated by black, white, grey, cardboard and silver. What are the key items in your wardrobe that you can’t live without? Dagmar’s leather jacket, a cashmere sweater and my Helmut Lang jeans. I wear this with my classic black Celine handbag and my Church’s. How will you celebrate House of Dagmar’s 10th birthday next year? We will see but plans are definitely starting to take place, I will get back to you on that one!
