Arnprior supports Humboldt Broncos TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The tragic news that 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos died in a bus crash that injured others last week has been felt across Canada
and in Arnprior. Dana Smith-Hisko's class at St. Joseph's Catholic School spent time discussing the incident and prayed for the lives lost. The Grade 8 students wanted to do something to let the Humboldt community know they were in their thoughts.
The students hosted a school-wide bake sale on Friday, April 13, which raised $1,000. All funds were directed to the team’s GoFundMe page, which has now surpassed $11 million. A local business, Pickling Dixie, donated its week’s earnings to the
class and Arnprior Minor Hockey Association provided green jerseys for the students to wear. Numerous businesses and residents also supported Jersey Day and put their sticks out to show support for the Saskatchewan hockey team.

Gun owners mount opposition to changes in law
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Renfrew County gun owners opposed to tightening the firearms law gathered to co-ordinate a response for the Liberal government. A meeting of about 200, hosted by Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, took place at the Cobden Agricultural Recreation Hall on April 11. Guest speakers were Tony Bernardo of the Canada Shooting Sports Association, Steve Torino of the former Federal Firearms Advisory Committee, and Christopher Di Armani, a freelance writer and filmmaker. Their central message: Don't harass law-abiders who value gun culture. They will push back and win. "This is bad legislation. That's why they want to ram it through as quickly as possible," Di Armani
"I will defend my family and property." – Stanley Mercredi said, author of a bestseller on the current prime minister. "Justin Trudeau has backed away from every promise he has made. I believe we can make him back away from this one." Bill C-71, an act to amend the National Defence Act and the criminal code, includes new provisions to bolster background checks for those seeking a firearms licence. The RCMP would be allowed to examine a person's entire history for potential red flags. The current system can go back five years. Prior to getting a licence, the RCMP completes an extensive background check, including domestic violence records, mental health and addiction, and criminal re-
cords. An oversized mailbox decorated in camouflage was marched into the crowd to encourage participants to send letters, emails and place phone calls to members of Parliament, especially Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale. Among the suggested questions to pepper MPs with: • The existing background check system works, so why change it; • Who, and with what qualifications, evaluates the information from a background check; • Why is there no appeal process; • It is a "gun registry" if businesses are forced to keep a record associating a person to a firearm; • Who keeps the data, for how long, to what purpose; • How much does the licence verification system cost to start and maintain. l See TWO, page 3

During the question and answer period of the evening, Pembroke Outdoor
Sports Club's Stanley Mercredi received a round of applause for speaking passionately about gun culture.
"I'm proud of who we are and where we grew up, and I will bury my firearms (if C-71 passes)," Mercredi said. "I will defend my fami-
ly and property. We have to stand together and fight this!" Afterward, at the back of the room, Mercredi was asked about urban centres and the rising gun use that is claiming the lives of young people at an escalating rate. If among the solutions to gun violence causes an imposition on rural users, isn't that worth it
- in the name of saving lives? "We need to educate people on the proper use of firearms," he said. "I believe you would see less crime if more people were properly trained. If you teach people to be lawful. They can be ethical." Even in rural areas, gun violence - particularly against women, such as the
victims of Basil Borutski who went on a killing spree not far from Cobden in 2015 - takes a toll. Asked if it would be much more difficult to kill people were guns not available to the public, Mercredi disagreed. "If you want one, you can buy one. Illegal guns will always be available," he said. "This bill does not address that."

OPINION
Why I hike for hospice My mom was dynamic, honest and just easy to love. Her name was Lee McVeigh-Sharpe. She passed away on Feb. 12, 2017, just shy of her 80th birthday in Hospice Renfrew. But before that, my mom lived in hospice, welcoming visitors, having some laughs, sharing memories, spending time with her family and friends, saying her goodbyes - something she often commented on, how lucky she was to be able to do that. On Jan. 31, 2017, when I walked into hospice with my mom, I was overwhelmed with fear. I felt like we were walking the plank, hand-in-hand. Part of me felt like I was letting my mom down. I thought I could look after her at home. I thought maybe it wouldn't be as hard if she passed away at home. Losing my dad at 13, I had always lived in fear of losing my mom. I couldn't even begin to imagine life without her. And the thought of watching her die
could bring me to my knees. As I walked through the doors of hospice with my mom, I remember thinking, "OK, hang on, Joanne! This is going to be a journey through hell." Well, from the moment we were greeted at the door, the journey I thought I was going on quickly changed course. What I experienced in the last two weeks of my mother's life was a gift - to my mom, to me, and to my family. Before long, hospice started to feel like home, only better because I didn't spend all my time cleaning, making sure there was food in the fridge, or cleaning up after anyone. It gave me and my siblings time to just be with our mom. There was always someone there if you needed anything, even at three in the morning. Spending time in hospice definitely had moments of sadness and heartache, but it also had times of laughter and acts of kindness, which have

The family of Lee McVeigh-Sharpe is grateful for the wonderful care and support of Hospice Renfrew. been imprinted in my heart forever. Hospice is a place where strangers quickly become friends, and you realize that the person you just met has great insight into what you are going through because she too is losing her mom. Over the last year, I have often found my mind drifting back to that time at hospice. I can still smell Verna's (one of the volunteers) sugar cookies baking. Those cookies were my comfort food during my
time there. I also remember looking out at the beautiful grounds around hospice and feeling a sense of peace and calmness that I never thought I would feel near the end of my mom's life. And I remember watching as these angels came in and out of my mom's room, caring for my mom with such kindness and dignity. It was like my mom was as special to them as she was to me. I can still hear the tenderness in their voices and the way they said my
mom's name when they came into her room to care for her. That still brings me comfort today. When I walked out of hospice without my mom, I didn't feel afraid, like I had when I walked in, and I didn't feel like I had let my mom down. I felt sad, but hopeful. I felt broken-hearted, but I also felt at peace. I felt that the decision my mom had made to live out her life in hospice was one of the best decisions she had made in her beautiful life.
This is all thanks to Hospice Renfrew - its staff and volunteers, and everything that makes hospice what it is. I will always be grateful to Hospice Renfrew for giving me and my family time to just be with my mom. Thank you, Hospice Renfrew, for everything. Hydrant flushing cleans the distribution system by flushing any standing red water. The valve maintenance program is designed to clean and exercise valves in the distribution system to extend service life and ensure valves are operable. The work is planned for the weeks of April 16th - June 1st and will be completed in the shortest period of time possible. This procedure is routine, but it may result in some temporary inconveniences such as lower water pressure or “red” water. Do not be alarmed. What you should know: If coloured water is detected, please open your COLD water taps to clear the system. The coloured water is not hazardous to health. This situation is temporary and should not last any longer than two hours at most. ABOUT US
New look for the paper arrives this week Starting with this week's edition, readers of the Renfrew Mercury and Arnprior Chronicle-Guide will notice a slightly new look to their local newspaper. While the coverage of local news, sports and features remains the same, the process by which the paper is laid out has been altered with the introduction of the Metroland Central Pagination Centre. The adjustments include a new suite of fonts and headline styles with greater use of white space to make it easier on the eyes. Opinion pieces and columns are more clearly defined with each now featuring individual tags to distinguish them from straight news stories. In the past, this line has been blurred somewhat, making it difficult to differentiate between what has been written as an objective news report - whether council, police or even human interest feature - and what is intended as a commentary on those events. But the biggest change readers will find has been made to the community calendar. With a continued and growing emphasis placed on our website But the biggest www.insideottawavalleychange readers .com, readers are being asked to follow a new prowill find has cess to promote their events. Where in the past, been made to you emailed or phoned in the community with the key information, we have now made events calendar. promotion something of a self-serve process. We'd like to be able to say now, 'If it's on in our community, it's on our website.' Getting your event online is quick, easy and free. Log on to www.insideottawavalley.com/ottawavalleyevents, scroll down and click on 'Post Your Event.' From there, simply fill out the various fields, making sure that your information is accurate. Once you complete these steps, the event just has to be approved by us in order to become available for publication in the print edition of the newspaper. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we cannot guarantee each and every 'happening' will make it in print. Of course, we know some people are not comfortable with or have access to a computer. You can still contact us (613-432-3655 or 800-884-9195) or email us and we can upload your information to appear online, which also makes it available to us for publication. This is a significant departure for What's Happening, which has been a staple of the paper for many years. But we hope it will provide an additional benefit to local, charitable and non-profit groups by having announcements also appearing online free of charge.

Green party leader should be included in election debates To the editor: 1955: That is the year of the last Ontario election in which any members of provincial parliament were elected who were not representing the three largest provincial parties. In every single election since, every MPP has been elected as a Liberal, Progressive Conservative, or New Democrat (or as a Cooperative Commonwealth MPP). All independents and smaller parties have been shut out electorally. Many factors would be responsible for this political continuity, one of which would be the dominant media coverage exclusive to the three large parties.
• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • l MORE ONLINE Read all our letters at insideottawavalley.com Whether or not this focus is deserved however, is best informed by this question: Why have the three main parties failed to excite more than half of eligible Ontario citizens to vote? Because they are in touch with the interests of only half of Ontario. If the media were to increase its coverage of others, we would see more Ontarians voting as they become aware of the alternatives. One alternative, the Green Party of Ontario, has run candidates in all ridings since the 2000s and now receives public election subsidies from the province's per-vote allowance. The Greens are in higher standing than all the rest of the small parties:

Ontarians have the choice to elect Greens in any riding. Yet there are no assurances from the broadcast consortium that runs the election leaders' debates that Ontario Green leader Mike Schreiner will be included alongside the Liberal, NDP, and PC leaders. Experience implies that the consortium will exclude Schreiner based upon a whim, as there are no written rules or laws that govern elections leaders' debates. Precedent for including Greens in provincial debates would include TVOntario's coverage of the Green party, as well as the Feb. 28 Ryerson University town hall on democracy,
which included the four leaders. British Columbia included its provincial Green leader in debates before the province elected Green MPPs. Greens are now also elected federally, in Prince Edward Island, and in New Brunswick. In 2018, it is now 63 years after the last election when Ontario elected any MPPs outside the three largest parties. The time for a candidate for a smaller party to be given a fighting chance is long overdue. Those who feel that Mike Schreiner should be included in the debates should speak their mind and join over 8,700 signatories to the online nonpartisan petition at fairdebates.ca. To see this bird look up or down
Michael Runtz tells us where to find partridges When it comes to finding animals, it's not rocket science to know where to look for most of them. If you want to observe a beaver you look in the water. To find a woodpecker, you stare at dead trees. To see a snowshoe hare, you search on the ground. At this time of year, however, if you want to see a common bird that usually frequents the forest floor you might try looking up in
a tree. But not just any tree, for in spring ruffed grouse are usually found in trembling aspens. Ruffed grouse, which are commonly called "partridge," are birds of the forest. They are well adapted for life in the north woods. In summer, their feather coats keep their owners hidden with their mottled pattern of brown, black, white, and cream streaks and blotches. This camouflage works exceedingly well when a grouse keeps still. If a predator approaches too closely, a grouse takes off with a thunderous roar of
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column wings, leaving the startled intruder with heart in throat. When snow covers the land, ruffed grouse are able to walk over it because they sport snowshoes. In the fall, elongated scales grow out

from the sides of the toes, increasing their surface area just as snowshoes do for our feet. By spring, the scales being no longer needed wear down and fall off. On cold nights grouse use the snow for warmth by diving into it with their wings closed. Hidden from view, they snuggle into a little chamber they create by shuffling their body around. Ruffed grouse are commonly heard in spring but not because they make vocalizations. A male climbs up on an old log it selected the previous fall and begins to repeatedly sweep its wings toward its chest without hitting it. A dull "thump" results with each pulse of wing beats. The wing motion and resulting "thump" increase in frequency, becoming more
rapid until a drum roll results. Remarkably, the thumping sounds are not made by the wings hitting the body but by air rushing into a vacuum created under the wings by their motion. Although usually encountered at ground level, ruffed grouse are frequently found in the tops of trembling aspens (poplars) in spring, but only in male trees; poplars sport flowers of one sex only, with some individual trees being male and others, female. The grouse visit the trees in early morning and late afternoon to access one of their favourite foods, the male flower buds; around 60 grams of buds are consumed each day. A grouse demonstrates surprising acrobatic ability
in trees, walking along branches with each foot slowly and methodically lifted ahead of the other. When a branch is too far to reach by foot, a grouse flies over to it. Sometimes several grouse can be seen "budding" in the same tree. Being non-aggressive birds, I wonder if two neighbouring grouse ever think: "Here, this bud's for you!" Election workshop in Renfrew April 23 So you want to run for council? TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com Get the political signs and slogans ready. The next municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 22. Nominations open May 1 and close July 27, so if you want to run, it's time to start thinking about it. To prepare for the upcoming election season the municipalities of Arnprior, McNab/Braeside, Greater Madawaska, Horton, Bonnechere Valley and Whitewater Region are joining together for a special presentation. "So you want to run for council?" is a candidate information workshop that will be held on April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Ma-Te-Way Activ-
ity Centre in Renfrew. "This should be considered a must for those individuals wanting to better understand the roles and responsibilities of being a member of council, the expectations of being in office, and the key legislative framework that directs the governance and administration of municipal governments," said Kim Bulmer, Renfrew town clerk, in an email on the event. The workshop is aimed at potential candidates, spouse/partner and anyone interested in learning more about local government. It will touch on a number of key topics: municipal powers, roles/responsibilities, public's role in local government, difference between governance and administration, municipal conflict of interest/other personal responsibilities and the impact
on family life. The night will also feature lawyer Fred Dean as the keynote speaker. He acts exclusively for municipalities across Ontario and municipal associations. "Mr. Dean is a wellknown expert in municipal law and governance and shares his knowledge and passion by facilitating workshops for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and through his own company, Amberley Gavel Ltd.," said Bulmer. "In addition to being a solicitor, (he) has also served as an appointed official in the role of city clerk for the City of Sudbury for 23 years." This is a free event, however registration is required. For more information or to sign up contact deputy clerk Jennifer Charkavi at 613-432-4848 or via email: info@renfrew.ca.

Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital Primary Health Care Center The Grove Nursing Home Community Services
A huge thank you to all ARH volunteers!
Meet ARH’s new ear, nose & throat specialist
Volunteering can be one of the best ways to demonstrate what kind of community you want to live in. As part of National Volunteer Week (April 15 to 21), we want to express sincere gratitude to our wonderful Auxiliary and everyone who donates their valuable time and skills to making Arnprior such a caring and supportive place to live. From working in the gift shop to serving on our Board of Directors, our over 150 volunteers who donate thousands of hours a month are a critical part of the ARH team and we wouldn’t be able to provide the same level of care without them.
There’s a new specialist in town – ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Tracey Ross will be providing regular outpatient clinics at ARH, including care for thyroid issues, sleep apnea, nasal obstructions, tubes and tonsils and reflux issues.
As part of the week’s activities, ARH will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Nick Smith Centre on Thursday, April 19. If you’re interested in exploring volunteer opportunities with ARH, please call (613) 623-3166, ext .222 or email careers@arnpriorhealth.ca.
Dr. Ross says Arnprior is exactly where she wants to be. “I come from a small community and I understand the need for local services,” she says. In fact, Dr. Ross is a big advocate of local community work, travelling to several rural hospitals each week to provide care. “Working at an academic hospital in a big city was never a dream for me. I love the feel of a local hospital. It reminds me of home in Kirkland Lake.” “We are happy to welcome Dr. Ross to our team,” notes CEO Eric Hanna. “Her expertise is a wonderful addition to the complement of the more than 30 visiting specialists who offer care at ARH. And with Dr. Ross here, more than 100 patients won’t have to travel to Ottawa for consultations”. Welcome Dr. Ross!
On the right track Our Board of Directors welcomed Champlain LHIN Board Chair Jean-Pierre Boisclair and CEO Chantale LeClerc to their March meeting. The two leaders shared updates on the LHIN’s key priorities while praising the ARH board and leadership for aligning their work with these strategies.
insideottawavalley.com
“The Rural Health Hub and Health Links are exactly what we’re looking for,” noted Boisclair. “Please accept my sincere appreciation for the leadership that you’re providing. It makes a big difference.” “The Arnprior & Area Rural Health Hub brings patients and health service providers together to help to improve the patient experience and the health of our local communities. And eventually, it will help to lower costs to the health system,” noted ARH CEO Eric Hanna. “We want to complement the LHIN’s sub-region work, and patients are a key part of the planning process.” Hanna also commented on the Health Links approach, where the most vulnerable patients in the region are cared for using a coordinated plan. Champlain LHIN CEO Chantale LeClerc summed up the importance of these types of initiatives: “We want to improve coordinated access and ensure that it is simple for people to get the health care services they need. ARH’s work is completely aligned with this vision.”

Major junior hockey club selects Arnprior native Jesse Dick taken in first round by Ottawa 67s DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Eastern Ontario's No. 1 amateur hockey team selected an Arnprior player high in this spring's draft. In the first round of the U18 priority draft, sixth overall in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Ottawa 67s major junior team selected Jesse Dick. The Grade 11 Arnprior District High School student, and son of Brian and Cindy, played last year with the U18 AAA midget Pembroke Lumberkings. And while the team finished in the lower half the standings, Dick won the scoring race and was named league MVP. "It was a really good year for me. My coach Jerrett DeFazio is a really good guy; he helped me feel confident out there," Dick
said. "Yeah, (we) didn't do so great, but they are all great teammates." His 39-game season ended with 30 goals and 30 assists. When handed the MPV award, officials said Dick has very good hands in tight and his vision for the game is strong. "My game is a 200-foot player with high offensive threat," he said, sitting at his hometown Nick Smith Centre rink, where he played a few games with the Junior B Packers two seasons ago. "It was really exciting. Lots of my friends could come out, and family," he said. "My parents have definitely helped out a lot, driving me to the rink; even here to play shinny." Shinny at Nick Smith can see some pretty highcalibre players. In summers past, Dallas Stars prospect Liam Hawel, who went 101st in the 2017 NHL draft, would jump on the ice with Dick. Jesse Dick of Arnprior won the scoring race and MVP award in the region's U18 AAA midget league this past winter. He was then taken sixth overall in the OHL draft for his age group. up with his dad, Stanley Cup-winner Jeff, and friend and Ottawa Senators prospect Logan
Brown. "There's a bunch of good guys that come home for the summer," Dick said. "I
watch a lot of hockey and take things from everybody to see if I can apply it to my game."
Dick participated in a 67s camp on the weekend of April 14-15, saying it is a "really good organization" with a number of really good players he feels capable of matching. Until he makes it the OHL - the league many NHL players come from he will play in the Kemptville organization. Pembroke traded him at season's end. Dick may have to billet and switch schools, but he isn't too concerned. The team is well experienced at the process, and he expects teammates to attend the same school. Asked what he would say if a group of young players were at his feet, Dick didn't go into developing puck skills or mastering footwork. Hockey is all upstairs. "You have to stay positive. You never want to be negative," he said. "You don't have to worry about what everyone else is doing. Just do your own thing and keep working hard. "Keep having fun."

OPINION
Spring brought tramps to house
Their appearance at the family dinner table brought fear and pity, Mary Cook writes Winter had given way to spring. The fields were bare of snow, and the West Hill was showing signs of new grass, where always it first appeared when the seasons changed. Just before the West Hill, the train tracks curved around a bend in our lower field, and if I stood behind the barns, close to the silo, I could see the train slow down to make the turn. That time of year, when the signs of spring were all around me, I would go to that place in the barnyard and watch. The trainwhistle farther down the track could be heard clearly, and that's what would take me to that place to see yet another sign that winter was over and done with. In the winter, the tramps travelled alone, but when the cold season had passed, I could sometimes see two or sometimes three sitting on top of the boxcars. My sister Audrey said they travelled alone in the winter because the chances of anyone feeding more than one were pretty slim, as often the pantries were getting low in just about every farm in the Valley. I doubted that to be true, because we always had ample meals, and I never knew Mother to turn away anyone at the door looking for something to eat. Come spring, and the pattern changed. As soon as the train slowed for the curve, one or two would jump off and head up to our
MARY COOK Column house. There was hardly a day went by, that we couldn't expect to see Mother serve up a couple extra plates of food and pack two brown paper bags with sandwiches before sending the tramps back on their way. It wasn't unusual to see the same face once or twice during the year. And the word must have travelled that "up in that log house on the hill, the woman is pretty fussy, you better wash your hands in the creek before you wrap on the door," because they were always spotlessly clean when they came. Always, of course, just before our noon meal. Many of them looked no older than my brother Emerson. When Audrey told me they were what were called "home boys", young orphans sent out from England and Scotland to work on the farms in the Valley, my heart ached for them. Many of them talked in an accent that wasn't familiar to me, and they always called Mother "maam" and Father "sir". They didn't talk much. It looked to me like they were anxious to fill their bellies and get on their way. We never knew their names, because we had been warned by Mother that unless they gave their names to us, we

weren't to ask. As soon as the last bite was tucked away, they would wait for Father to rise from the table, and they too would stand, and reach out a hand to shake, and say their thanks. Then they would ask Father and Mother if there was any little chore they could do to help pay for their meal. Of course, with three strapping boys, there were few jobs that they couldn't handle. But Father knew the tramps wanted to show their appreciation by lending a hand. They might be asked to fork hay from the hay mow, or sweep out the barn, but never would they be given a job that would keep them away from the next train coming through the Valley. I looked at the tramps through eyes of both fear and pity. They were people I knew were not from Northcote, and so were strangers. My heart ached for the loneliness I could see in their eyes, and I could sense the hunger in their stomachs. That early spring day, I followed the tramp outside after his meal. I walked beside him as far as the silo. He ruffled my hair and with the bag of lunch under his arm, reached out to shake my hand just as he had done with Father. I felt I had to say something, and so I asked, "Where are you going to go?" He looked off over the far fields of our farm, down the tracks beside the West Hill, and said, "Wherever the next train takes me." Interested in an electronic version, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca. – Mary Cook is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. 'Mary Cook's Memories' appears as a regular column.

Predeceased by her parents Willard and Evelyn Armstrong (nee Gunter) of Jemseg, NB. Eileen was raised on a farm in New Brunswick where she learned the traits of hard work, selflessness and devotion to family, qualities she put to good use to create vibrant and loving homes as the Canadian Forces moved our family across Canada and Germany for over 20 years. In addition to banking and retail careers, with skill and determination Eileen kept the home fires burning during Ken’s many absences. Tricia will always remember the remarkable Halloween costumes and elaborate Birthday parties created for her by Eileen. Although quiet by nature, Eileen readily made friends who unfailingly remarked on her Maritime sense of humour and remarkable memory for their family details. Eileen was especially happy and proud to watch the growth and accomplishments of her daughter and family. A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held Saturday April 21st, 2018 from 1 - 3:00 PM at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa, ON to which all our friends are invited. At Eileen’s request a private burial will take place afterwards. In lieu of flowers donation to your favourite charity appreciated. Tributes at www.beechwoodottawa.ca

Spencer, Cheryl Passed suddenly but peacefully in her sleep during the early morning of April 10th, with her husband by her side. Survived by her loving & adoring husband Colin. Survived by sister Heather (Pieter) of Harrowsmith and her parents Edward and Yvonne of Perth. Cheryl was born in Toronto but quickly made it back to Ottawa. Her love of horses started early with her running down the street as a toddler to see horses. She completed her BA (Economics) at Carleton University and was also an accomplished equestrian rider. Always wanting to learn more she recently attained her real estate licence. When starting work after university, instead of buying a car with her first pay cheque, she bought a farm in Newburgh where she ran horse camps and lessons and influenced many young girls’ lives at Raspberry Ridge Farms. She relocated the animals (and herself) to the Almonte location just over 2 years ago to be with Colin. Cheryl never turned away any 2 or 4 legged creatures that needed help. She will be always remembered as a loving nurturer and whose greatest passion was helping others. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Almonte Civitan on Saturday April 21st from 2pm to 5pm. If desired donations may be made in her memory to LAWS (Lanark Animal Welfare Society). In lieu of cut flowers please give a plant or a tree that we may plant in her honour in one of her many gardens at the farm or at the cottage in Haliburton. “She leaves us rich in memories.” Funeral Arrangements Entrusted Into The Care Of C.R. Gamble Funeral Home & Chapel Inc. (127 Church St., Almonte, ON. 613-256-3313) Condolences and tributes : www.crgamble.com

In loving memory of my Husband
Doug Doucette who passed away April 13th 2014 We are sending a dove to heaven with a parcel on it’s wings, Be careful when you open it, it’s full of beautiful things. Inside are a million kisses, wrapped up in a million hugs. To say how much we miss you, and to send you all our love. We hold you close within our hearts, and there you will remain. To walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again.

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies beneath our smiles. No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. Always in our hearts and thoughts. Love Bonnie, Shannon, Mike, Ryan, Heather, Matthew, Sierra and Aiden.

IN MEMORIAM
OBST, Wanda - In memory of a dear, fun and loving sister and aunt, who was taken tragically in a car accident, April 23, 2003. Time passes… our grief remains… You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what she’d want; Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Forever in our hearts… Deb, Doug and Erin

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
sudoku HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Responsibilities will soon be easier to handle, Leo. Not because the tasks are less difficult, but because you have more people on your side helping you out.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you may think that you have missed an important opportunity, but don’t get too worried just yet. With a few new strategies, you can regain your momentum.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Planning a vacation can be almost as fun as traveling, Virgo. When someone asks for your help drawing up a travel itinerary, put all of your effort into the task.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you may be easily swayed this week by someone who is smooth-talking. Figure out if this person can be believed or not, but give them a chance.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Some sort of breakthrough in your life is soon to become a reality, Libra. It may be a financial windfall or a new job opportunity. Keep your eyes open to any and all possibilities.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You may find yourself in a position where you can take on a leadership role, Cancer. Do not hesitate to jump onboard because this can be just what’s needed for your career.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 You can achieve great things this week, Scorpio. Ultimately, your accomplishments depend on how much you can focus on the tasks at hand. The ball is in your court.
