A FAIR FOR THE BOOKS

It was one of the best years yet for the Arnprior Fair. Held Aug. 9-11 at a new location on Van Dusen Drive, hugely successful features including Friday's special needs day and Saturday night headliners Big Wreck, helped make the event one for the record books. More than 400 people with special needs and their supporters attended the first morning of the Arnprior Fair. Midway management turned down the lights and sounds for those with heightened sensitivities; one of a few fairs in the region to do so. Arnprior Fair has welcomed those with disabilities since 2013. Canadian-American rock band Big Wreck drew the fair's biggest crowd yet. The midway, 4-H and animal shows, and other entertainment including River Town Saints and Rainwater Whiskey, rounded out the experience for fair goers.

COUNTY APPEALS FOR RECONSIDERATION OF LONG-TERM CARE CUTS JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Renfrew County may have a serious problem regarding longterm care in the near future. In late May, the provincial government announced they would eliminate two funding streams for long-term care. Two Renfrew County owned long-term care homes, Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew and Miramichi Lodge in Pembroke, will be affected by these cuts. Provincial funding for both homes will be slashed by $175,000 in 2019 and by $366,000 in 2020. On June 26, Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy sent a letter regarding the concerns to Merrilee Fullerton, the new Minister of Long-Term Care, asking the government to reconsider the elimination of the funding pots. "We support your intent to improve health care and end hallway medicine," she said, "but reducing provincial funding to municipal long-term care homes will

Murphy added that the cuts would have "an immediate and negative impact" on front-line staff, which in turn would affect the quality of resident care. Shelley Sheedy, director of long-term care for the County of

Renfrew, shares the warden's concerns. "In the short term, we don't know if these cuts will impact staff," she said. "However, if they hope to keep the same number of employees, then the extra funds needed would have to come from the municipalities that host these homes, therefore creating an extra burden for taxpayers." Admaston/Bromley council

received the letter during their Aug. 1 meeting, where they agreed to support Murphy in her

request. The cuts were to take effect on Aug. 1, but Fullerton announced in a statement in late July they would be delayed three months to Oct. 1 after hearing from longterm care operators and others with concerns. "This will allow for more sufficient time for long-term care operators to make the required adjustments and if there are any potential gaps affecting the quality of care for patients, they can be addressed." Murphy urges all Renfrew County municipalities, the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and AdvantAge Ontario to support the recommendations.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

In late May, Premier Doug Ford's provincial government announced province-wide cuts to long-term care funding, which will affect two local care homes, Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew and Miramichi Lodge in Pembroke. Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy has asked Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton to reconsider the elimination of funding streams. The letter was circulated to all municipalities in Renfrew County. The Arnprior Chronicle-Guide is tracking responses to the request.

FEDERAL ELECTION

RENFREW RIDING INCLUDES INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PETAWAWA'S DAN CRIGER AIMS TO DRAW BUSINESS TO RENFREW COUNTY JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Dan Criger is offering to bring more attention to Renfrew County if elected for the riding of RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke. Should the Independent candidate defeat long-time MP Cheryl Gallant of the Conservative Party, he promises to make it a priority to bring well paying jobs to Renfrew County. "I will use my influence in parliament to let the country know that Renfrew County is an ideal place to do business," Criger said. "Economic development in Renfrew County is an investment in Cana-

da. Our proximity to Ottawa means Renfrew County should be the destination of choice for business and industry. If the federal government is serious about rural economic development, they should put their money where their mouth is, set the example for businesses and decentralize some government departments to bring well paying jobs to places like Renfrew County." The Petawawa resident was previously a member of the People's Party of Canada, but lost the nomination to David Ainsworth. He then chose to break from the party, announcing his intention to run as an Independent candidate in early June. In late May, former Liberals Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott announced they would run as Independents in the up-

coming election. Only a handful of Independent politicians have ever been elected federally in Canada, with none since 2008. Criger explains why an Independent choice is a good option for voters. "I think Independent MPs are important because we can better represent the interests of the people in a riding, as opposed to the interests of a party," he said. "If there is a minority government in October, and it looks like there will be, then that is when it is most important to have an Independent MP and when he is most powerful. Regardless of who wins, I would work with them because they will need my support to govern." Criger added that while there is a heavy advantage to running Independent, there is also a slight downside.

"The main problem is actually getting the message out," he said. "I don't have the big machinery and money that supports the other candidates. They get free advertising every time their leader appears on TV or in print or makes a policy announcement. They have decades of organization behind them while I need to start from scratch." Criger explained what it would take to defeat Gallant, the MP for RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke for almost 20 years. "There is a lot of discontent with Ms. Gallant but people complain to me that they have no other choice," he said. "I need to convince people I am a real and viable alternative. In the U.S. a first-time politician beat a career politician to become president, so it can be done. But it is an uphill battle for

SLATER FAMILY HISTORY DETAILED IN BOOK DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com She is 94 years old and legally blind, but Catherine Cameron is also one of Arnprior's newest authors. The Slater's of Jedburgh, Scotland is a lengthy family history that begins in the old country's lowlands near the English border. The book opens with Walter Slater in the 1700s. From there his son William - Cameron's great, great grandfather - emigrated to Montreal, then toward White Lake where it was said "Chief McNab" was offering land. Cameron doesn't think the move had to do with an adventurous spirit catching the travel bug. It was necessity. Life was difficult in the conquered northland, and Canada held promise for future generations. "He didn't get to White Lake. They were not working with very good reports back then," said Cameron, from a table at Arnprior Villa where she had moved

with her husband Archie Cameron 13 years ago. "He met a man and moved his family to Almonte." William, who lived from 1800 to 1885, eventually saved enough to buy a farm in the area. The house would burn at a later date, but the land remains in operation. Then his son, William J, moved to White Lake where the large family of 13 - including Cameron's father Eric - lived off his income from the lumber industry. Eric would move to Arnprior where the first Slater's Bakery opened. At one time as many as three Slater's Bakeries were pumping out bread and other goods. It is said they all worked from William J's recipe. "We could never figure out why they opened a bake shop," Cameron said. "They all used my grandfather's recipe and said there were no additives. Steve [the latest Slater to own a Slater's Bakery] still says there are no additives." The book details the ups

and downs of a prominent family in the region. It was done, Cameron said, because family members such as her father often said one should be done. And it is a generous work; for others' children; Cameron had an illness that prevented her from having her own. Genealogy has taken off in popularity recently. Cameron said bits of information are easier to come by on the worldwide web. For many years it was more challenging for the insurance employee/family tree sleuth. "I had to go through cemeteries to get most of it," she said, chuckling. "Later cousins would send me things from the internet." A copy of The Slater's of Jedburg, Scotland is available for viewing at Arnprior Public Library. Unfortunately, most other copies went quickly during a book signing at the Villa in December.

Liberal candidate Ruben Marini wants to see communities in Renfrew County catch up to the rest of Canada if chosen to be MP for Renfrew-NipissingPembroke. Affordable housing, services for seniors, support for small businesses and more opportunities for young people are the main issues Ruben Marini aims to tackle if elected. "Canada is doing well. However, our riding is still lagging on several fronts," he said. "We need investment in infrastructure, giving communities the tools necessary to keep a good standard of living, we need investment in education and skills and we need investment in people. The former engineer was the only party member to put forward a nomination for the riding. He offi-

cially joined the race Aug. 1 at a nomination meeting in Pembroke. Marini has been interested in politics since he was a student. He joined the Liberals during the 1993 campaign to re-elect Len Hopkins as a Liberal MP. He's been supporting the party and campaigns since then. He decided to run for office because he wants a better representation in Parliament for the people in his community and others. "I'm a family man who cares about people, my community and the direction the country is going," Marini said. "After witnessing the disconnect between the progress Canada has made in the last few years and the state of the communities in our riding, I could not see a leader or a champion that listens and can help the people of Renfrew-NipissingPembroke have access to the same opportunities seen

elsewhere." Marini explains what it will take to defeat Cheryl Gallant, the MP of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke for almost 20 years. "People have been left behind in our communities while the country keeps growing. We need to close that gap," he said. "I'm committed to work hard, as I did my entire life, to ensure that we get the best shot at lifting people's lives. So, what it will take to win this election is for local people to realize that there is a choice: more of the same or a real opportunity to do better." The federal election is set for Oct. 5. Along with Gallant, Marini will face off against Green candidate Ian Pineau, People's Party candidate David Ainsworth and Independent candidate Dan Criger. The NDP has not yet chosen a candidate as of early August.

OPINION EDITORIAL

The choice to fly, wear, or otherwise associate oneself with a flag is, inherently, a bold statement. If you fly a Canadian flag on your front porch, for example, you are telling the world that you are Canadian and proud of it. In recent years, a number of municipalities in the Ottawa Valley area have chosen to raise the Pride flag as part of their local Pride parades and festivals. This, too, is a clear statement, proclaiming that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identification, is welcome in these communities. Flags, and people's reactions to them, can indeed reveal much about someone's character. Recently, North Grenville council heard a delegation from a citizen who put forth the curious opinion that the Pride flag is itself discriminatory. Harman Boersma argued that the municipal flag policy states that "at no time will any flag be flown that's inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, prejudice, political, or religious ... and I've argued in my articles that the rainbow flag is all of those." Members of council explained to Boersma that, in their opinion, the Pride flag is none of these things and in this case, it's council's opinion that counts. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those in this area who choose to fly the Confederate flag. Earlier this month, one appeared at a car show in Smiths Falls. Whether those who choose to use this flag as decoration want to admit it or not, people who associate themselves with it are aligning themselves with the Confederate States of America, which went to war against the U.S. in the 1860s to resist abolition and maintain their Black slaves. As such, the Confederate flag continues to be viewed by most people as a subtle (or not-so-subtle) endorsement of white supremacy. In Canada, people have the ability to fly whatever flag they want - this is freedom of speech; but freedom of speech also means that you recognize that in flying any given flag, people are going to judge you for it in one way or another, whether they judge you as a proud Canadian, a person who embraces inclusivity, or a bigot. The progression of society is a constant battle of push-and-pull. Flags, people's reactions to them, and indeed the reactions to the reactions, are often good ways of telling which side of history a person is on.

LETTERS & COMMENTARY AFGCC ANNOUNCES CHANGES To the editor: Re: The Arnprior Fish and Game Conservation Club Inc. The AFGCC is very much alive and celebrating its 72nd year of existence. The executive has made some financial choices to reduce administrative expenses to ensure long-term financial viability. It is just plain wrong to ask the good people of Arnprior and area to donate financial support to a charitable community social group that cannot control its administrative expenses. First and foremost meant ending the lease with the town for the land in Bell Park, upon which the club house was situated. The taxes payable in lieu of rent was the single largest administrative expense the club was incurring for the last 20 years. It was unsustainable. Abandoning the lease meant that associated costs such as maintenance, hydro and insurance costs either went away or could be reduced. As a result, administrative costs now account for a more reasonable

amount of the total expenses. Instead of discussing "what to do about the club house," it also means that valuable time for meetings is devoted to enhancing its mission and realizing its charitable objectives of "conservation" relating to education, information and advocacy, habitat enhancement and enforcement of fish and game laws. A club house is not essential to delivery of programs such as the recent Archery Training in the High School project, youth-mentored hunter training courses, bursaries for graduating students, habitat enhancement projects like the American eel work with MNRF, etc. AFGCC is very much alive and continuing its work - indeed, planning, organizing and ticket selling is continuing for its 72nd Annual Dinner and Auction Sept. 7 at the Nick Smith Centre. Tickets are available from executive members. We ask for your support to help us continue with our fish and game sustainability work.

THANKS FOR HELPING RWANDAN FAMILY To the editor: Arnprior Cares thanks all who donated time, space, equipment and money during our recent fundraising activities to reunite a Rwandan family. Jean de Dieu is a Peace Activist whose safety was in danger in his native Rwanda. He is anxious to re-unite with his wife and three young sons who have also had to leave Rwanda and are now living in another region of Africa. A Family Day featuring free hot dogs, popcorn and coffee together with several Rwandan games was held at Robert Simpson Park on June 22. Over the weekend of June 28 locally roasted coffee beans were on sale and donations accepted outside Metro. We would like to thank all who contributed and participated. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SEEK HOST FAMILIES IN RENFREW COUNTY STAFF The student exchange organization YES Canada is currently seeking families across the Renfrew county area to open their homes and hearts to international students that will be arriving in the fall to attend high schools across the Renfrew County District School Board. Students arriving this fall with YES Canada come from destinations across the globe in-

cluding Italy, France, Norway, Sweden, Japan and Australia and are coming to Canada for programs ranging between three and 10 months to immerse themselves in Canadian high school life and to create a lasting bond and experience Canadian culture with their host family. Host families are asked to provide three meals a day and a safe nurturing environment and are compensated monthly for welcoming a student into

their home. "Hosting an international student is so much more than welcoming a guest to live in your home," said Scott Baird, student recruitment manager. "It's welcoming a new family member and contributing to a life-changing opportunity for the student and for your own family." He added that most of their students build life-long relationships with their host families and he often hears stories of families

travelling to meet their students years later, being invited to share in family milestones and celebrations and keeping in touch long after the exchange experience is over. YES Canada is a Muskokabased high school exchange organization that sends Canadian students to 23 countries worldwide and welcomes international students to take part in high schoolbased cultural and language immersion programs. To learn more about hosting or to explore outbound programs for a Canadian student interested in travelling abroad, please contact YES Canada: www.youthedservices.ca or email homestay@youthedservices.ca or call 416-623-6220.

REID CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY WITH FREE BARBECUE FRIDAYS DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com One of Arnprior's largest employers and most generous community contributors is also one of its oldest businesses. Reid Brothers Motor Sales turns 65 this month, and the family-owned group of companies is celebrating with free barbecues every Friday during August. To what does owner Trevor Reid owe their great success? "Loyalty is big here. I know in other areas it is a dying virtue, but we see it

every day here," Reid said. "We are blessed to have many long-standing employees, some with 30 years' experience. And some longstanding customers too; multiple generations will buy their cars here and trade up - even to the Lincoln." With 50 employees spread across the Madawaska Boulevard site, and at the body and glass shops, Reid is among the larger businesses in town. Many of those employees coach sports or volunteer with service clubs, or find other ways to participant in life in the Prior. "We are very proud of

that. There are not a lot of big companies around anymore," he said. "We take that very seriously." Reid also sees it as a "responsibility" to give back to the community. Countless thousands of dollars, along with donation items, have gone to worthy causes over the years. "We try to help everyone.

FOOD AND DRINK

SUMMER DAYS AND DEEP FRIED GOODNESS DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com Here's a staycation idea: grab a water bottle, a bag of dill pickle chips, a friend, and head for Burnstown beach; hitting up Betty's Chips on the way back to Arnprior. It's a well-worn outing for our family. The view from Betty's goes on forever, encompassing the Ottawa River's jewel-twinkling majesty. Besides, hot summer days are made for French fries. (As are cold hockey rinks, so maybe every season is perfect for deep fried goodness.) Assigning the Braeside chip truck almost exclusive rights to our family seemed unfair, so why not try a few others. Wes' is iconic, of course, and let's hope the new owners (it's currently for sale) will keep the same methods in place. Missy's is in the Rona parking lot these days, a considerable move from the long-time location at the fairgrounds.

However, on this blistering hot day it was Brian's Spuds. Many, many people have said Brian's fish and chips are the best around. Add my name to the list. Golden battered, meaty inside, generous wedge of fresh lemon, zesty tartar sauce and cold coleslaw on a bed of very good fries: Brian's is the catch of the day. Here's a tip: an order of one fish is plenty for any single mortal. Getting the twopiece is enough to feed a young family of four, or possibly a small army. More visits are ahead, in part because there is value for money. And in part out of obligation. My box handles let go and the entire meal crashed to the pavement. Looking down for three seconds felt like an eternity; it didn't register;

Derek Dunn/Torstar Brain's Spuds in Arnprior offers huge portions of fish perfectly prepared, according to our reviewer. But three other chip trucks in the area provide strong competition. makes no sense; never before has that happened. Seagulls attacked from nowhere and within two minutes ate everything but the lemon. I tossed it in the garbage and kept the tartar sauce and coleslaw. The delightful young woman inside asked no questions. Within minutes a replacement was handed to me as if nothing happened. I wanted to apologize but couldn't take blame for the box. She did apologize but, really, chance was to blame. Next time - after a visit to Missy's - I will carry the box from the bottom. Something called Road Kill Poutine sounds like a formidable challenge.

STODDART, James Passed away in peace on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at the age of 81. Preceded in death by his wife Valerie. Dear brother of Angela. Loving father of Andrew and Chris (Leanne). Proud grandad to Matthew, Carolyn, Colin and Samantha. Uncle of Jennifer (Derek), Laurel (Lewin) and Michael (Julie). Brother-in-law of Ed Komorowski. Born in England, Dad spent his formative years in Jamaica and Canada where a career in drafting and design commenced, including a stint on the AVRO Arrow project. A natural offshoot of his occupation, Dad was a life-long lover of all things aeronautical and cars, particularly MG’s, where many hours were spent researching, restoring and driving said vehicles! Family roots were planted in Georgetown and Dad became involved in the activities of his two young sons, the growing social scene of a new community, as evidenced by the always entertaining basement parties in his hand-built bar area, and was always seen on Sunday mornings for his customary long walks. A life curve ball in 1983 saw Dad recover from a car accident where some physical challenges remained, however his sense of humour, love of sunshine, a car ride and a cold beer did not diminish! Thank you to the Allendale Day Program for Dads care. A move to Renfrew in the 2000’s, Dad was welcomed at the Bonnechere Manor Day Program and eventually became a full-time resident. Well cared for, Dad enjoyed the back and forth greetings received from everyone. A very special thank you to Dr. Di Paolo and the staff at Bonnechere for keeping Dad looked after. A further thank you to the Sunshine Coach service for Dads ‘wheels’ around town. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Goulet Funeral Home. If Irvin was here with us, he would say don’t cry for me today. I am sitting on a John Deere Tractor, and I’m busy baling hay. A warm breeze is gently blowing, the field is flat and wide, and loved ones gone before me, are waving from the other side. The calluses that were on my hands don’t feel near as rough. The hard work that I faced at home, here does not seem quite as tough. So when you pass a nice hay field and that fresh cut smell is in the air, I may not be with you now, but remember me while you’re there.

A GOOD YEAR FOR MONARCHS MICHAEL RUNTZ CHECKS IN ON THE FRAGILE BUTTERFLY MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

Nature is replete with cycles. Some, such as the rise and fall of the tides, or the change in the persona of the moon, are regular and predictable. Others, such as the size of seed crops or small mammal populations, are wildly unpredictable. The latter is especially true of insects because these small animals are affected by so many variables including food availability, winter severity, pred-

ator and parasite densities, and summer environmental conditions. Some butterflies exhibit great fluctuations in their numbers. This is especially true of Monarchs, the most famous member of that group, for not only must they contend with conditions in our area but also with those in the mountains of Mexico where they spend winter. One factor influencing Monarch populations is the availability of Milkweed. Two species of milkweed are common locally: Common Milkweed, which thrives in dry, sun-drenched fields; and Swamp Milkweed, a stunning, wine-hued wildflower that likes having its feet wet. A third species, Orange Milkweed (aka Butterfly Weed) is rare here. All are food for the Monarch cater-

pillar whose distinctive green, black, and yellow-ringed body is familiar to most school children. This appears to be an excellent year for Monarchs, as plenty of caterpillars and butterflies are being seen. Monarchs and Milkweeds enjoy a complex relationship. Milkweeds contain a powerful chemical that deters most animals from eating them. Monarch caterpillars, however, safely ingest the bitter-tasting terpenoid heart poison and store it in their bodies. This makes them unpalatable to other animals, a feature advertised by their highly visible colouration. When the caterpillars transform into their adult stage, their toxicity is passed on, a trait that the butterflies advertise through their distinctive colouration. Milkweeds provide food not only for Monarch caterpillars but also for the adult butterflies. Their floral cups contain sweet nectar that the butterflies sip through

larvae eat their way into the caterpillar where they continue to dine at their host's expense. However, Monarch caterpillars bear hairs that are sensitive to air currents created by wings of an incoming parasitoid. When one is detected, the Monarch caterpillar rears up, swinging large black "whips" back and forth, keeping its attacker at bay. To see this response, try gently blowing on a Monarch caterpillar. Just be sure you don't accidentally inhale it! The Nature email is michaelwruntz@gmail.com Michael Runtz is a long-time columnist who teaches Natural History and Ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the international television series Wild by Nature, and has written and/ or photographically illustrated 13 books on natural history topics.

their long proboscis. In return for providing them with nourishment and chemical armament, the butterflies repay Milkweeds by pollinating them. This is accomplished by transporting the Milkweed's saddlebag-like pollen sacs to other Milkweeds. The "saddlebags" attach to a Monarch's feet (or those of another large insect such as a Bumble Bee) when they slip into slits between nectar cups. The pollen sacs detach when those legs slip into a flower that previously had its saddlebags removed. This remarkable system works well unless visitors lack the strength to pull their legs free once laden with pollen sacs; it is commonplace to find small moths and flies hanging lifelessly from Milkweed flowers. Although Monarch caterpillars own chemical protection, they still have problems to deal with. Parasitoids (parasitic wasps and flies) lay eggs on caterpillars, and when those eggs hatch, the
