Amy Scholten, an Arnprior lawyer at the non-profit Renfrew County Legal Clinic, suggested her group that provides free legal services - specializing in seniors' issues - faces an existential threat. The voluntary board that includes offices in Arnprior and Renfrew is likely to shut down, replaced by an internet portal, saving the government $700,000 annually. "They are talking about closing our offices," Scholten said. "Our clients will have nowhere else to go so they will end up on your doorstep." She indicated the motive isn't to save tax dollars or pay down the deficit. Ontario's 72 legal aid clinics were given $45 million last year, and will see a 30 per cent cut with similar amounts over the next couple of years. Yet it is legal aid See OFFICES, page 2

Aside from ensuring justice for poor people, the costs of those who will languish in prison or drag down the system by representing themselves will add to the $5-billion justice system. "Costs will go up for mental health, hospitals, OPP, demand in court and other social services," Scholten said. "We get people off social assistance. This will put people back on social services." The county's legal clinic provides other services, including education to youths on their rights and responsibilities when it comes to the landlord-and-tenant act, and one-on-one legal advice. She anticipates greater strain on library services as vulnerable people search the internet for legal advice, homelessness and food-

"Communication (by the Ford government) wasn't working well before," Stack said, "with the cabinet shuffle hopefully it will get better." The PC party during the election promised not to cut frontline workers.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

The Ford government's first budget, back in April, announced a 30 per cent reduction in funding to legal aid clinics. Lawyers have responded with a campaign that including taking their message to municipal councils across the province. Arnprior has heard from them, with Renfrew and others expected in the near future.

Mayor Walter Stack recently toured the neighbourhood between Edey and William Streets to find 31 residential and two commercial properties in violation of the clean-

"The town's recycling contractor Beaumen Waste Management Ltd. unexpectedly announced their closure on Monday, June 24," reads a Town of Arnprior press release. "As the town works toward a longerterm solution for curbside re-

cycling collection, interim measures are in place for the week of July 2-5." The town will be using a combination of contracted services and internal forces for the week of July 2-5 to maintain curbside recycling collection services. Residents are asked to place recycling at the curbside as per the Canada Day Holiday Col-

lection Schedule. Recycling collection - which is normally on Monday, July 1 - moves forward to Wednesday, July 3. Prior to moving to Arnprior nine years ago, Hotchkiss had many more volunteer hours with Madawaska Horticultural Society, girl guides and brownies, and other organizations.

"And I'm only listing a few of her activities," Mayor Walter Stack told the large crowd. After accepting the framed certificate, Hotchkiss said she can no longer fool anyone; everyone knows she's a senior. "I'm very flattered," she said, in part to her children and many grandchildren in attendance. "I hope to continue just being myself for many more years to come."

BRAESIDE CELEBRATES CANADA DAY WITH LARGE PARADE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com It was possibly the largest Braeside Canada Day parade ever, according to several observers. The annual event - that sees prizes for best outfitted vehicles - parades through village streets to crowds large and small, many waving Canada flags and dressed in red and white.

Top prize went to Teagan Smith and her group of four-wheelers. Second place went to Nora Ivory who, together with parents Amanda and David, was representing Sand Point. Following a hearty Lions Club breakfast, there is plenty of fun to be had in Arnprior all day long. The official kickoff is at Robert Simpson Park with the singing of O Canada and a giant cake.

OLD MODEL T WAS LIKE A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY AFTER INITIAL HESITATION, THERE WAS NO STOPPING FATHER, MARY COOK WRITES MARY COOK Column

Father didn't know much about cars. The old Model T we got in a trade - gravel from our pit to fill a neighbour's culvert. My brother Everett drove it home when the deal was completed, and it took forever for Father to get behind the wheel. He cleared out the cutter and an assortment of farm tools from an outbuilding close to the house, and ever after, it was called the drive shed. When the car was brought home, Everett drove it right into the

drive shed, and there it sat for days. Father walked around it like it was a fox with the rabies, until Mother told him if he didn't start using it, she would be behind the wheel. So Father finally got around to trying to start the Model T. He took the crank out from under the front seat, and I stood at the drive shed door, pretty sure the old car would blow to bits. The crank took a spin, Father's arm flew in the air, and I was sure he was maimed for life. The German swear words came out of his mouth like bullets! But the car started and was shaking like someone with Saint Vitus' dance. His first trip out the lane was to Briscoe's General Store, with me in the back seat. After that first trip, there was no stopping Father. Then came the Saturday night when Mother was able to scrape together enough money to take us all into Renfrew to the O'Brien Theatre. It was a Hop Along Cassidy show, and we would be driving back to Northcote in the dark. Just before we got into the car for

the trip into Renfrew, Mother had a good look at the little lights on either side of the car and sent Everett to the barn for a lantern. And thank goodness she did! It was dark when we hit the Northcote Side Road, and so Mother lit the lantern. Holding it at arm's length out her side of the car, it was easy to see there was more light from the lantern than there was from the two little lamps attached to the side of the car. I said a silent thanks when we didn't meet one other car all the way back to the farm. One day Mother said Father should take the car into Thacker's Garage in Renfrew and have it

checked over. He said as long as it was running, there was no need to spend hard-earned dollars on a car that was held together with wire and binder twine. He figured one day no amount of elbow grease would get it out of the drive shed. And that would be the end of it. As if he was talking about a member of the family, he said, "If she dies, she dies." QUICK THINKING, FIRST-CLASS CARE To the editor: Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, the neurologist and ICU at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Thank you to the paramedics for their quick response to transport me to the hospitals. On Jan. 5, 1982, our 45-year-old mother, Rena Landry (McNulty) had a major migraine and was hospitalized in the Ottawa Civic Hospital, diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. She was in and out of consciousness, and due to her brain being in spasm no surgery was performed. She passed away Jan. 23, 1982. On May 29, 2019 after suffering two weeks of bad headaches, I developed a major migraine and my husband, Lloyd, called an ambulance. I was conscious and talking but in pain. A CT scan was given to me at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, showing I had a brain hemorrhage and a brain aneurysm. I was then transported to the Ottawa Civic Hospital and more

tests were done. Surgery was then performed, headed by Dr. John Sinclair, in which both he and his team had to work on the two aneurysms. The operation went well and Dr. Sinclair met with my siblings in the waiting room, at which time he informed them that these aneurysms can be hereditary and that each family member should see their family physician and be checked out. This is now being done by my siblings. I would first like to thank Dr. Sinclair and his team for the amazing surgery they performed on me. To the nurses and doctors in the Intensive Care Unit that were ever so good and patient with me. Thank you also to the following: • Dr. George Hooper for the almost daily visits I had from him, at which time any questions I asked him he would answer for me ... A very caring doctor. • Sal (physiotherapist) who was my inspiration and the first one I got up to walk with. • Rosey (physiotherapist) who tested me on my body movement. • Melissa (occupational thera-

pist), our talk and her comments on what I should do when I got home was great. • Renee (registered nurse) for all the support given to me. • Victoria (registered nurse, aunt of Dr. Anthony DeJesus of Renfrew) for taking me for my first shower the day I was discharged. Thank you to my husband Lloyd and all my family and friends for being there for me.

KUDOS TO GOOD SAMARITAN To the editor: A really nice thing happened to me recently after shopping for groceries in Renfrew, Ont. A retired school teacher and long-time resident of Shawville, I often come over to shop, visit my daughter and take my dog for a walk in the park near the river. It was while visiting the park the incident happened. I left my wallet with a significant sum of money on the park bench while watching the geese and ducks frol-

ic in the water. I panicked about a few hours later when I realized my wallet was gone. A few hours later a call from my daughter brought me some encouraging news. My wallet had been turned in to the OPP by some good Samaritan who would not reveal his or her identity. We often see the worst in today's society. Violence is common and often we are indifferent to the plight of others. How refreshing it is to see a kind and nice act from an honest person - someone who will not come forward and accept a thank you. Sure would like to thank this individual who made my stressful day end nicely.

LEVITSKY, Patricia “Pat” (Nee Luciano) Suddenly, but very peacefully, at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning, June 25, 2019, Patricia Margaret Levitsky of Arnprior, formerly of Carleton Place, passed away at the age of 89. Beloved wife of John Hillman. Predeceased by her first husband, Rick Levitsky. Dearly loved mother of Rick (Joanne) of Calabogie. Cherished and forever loved by her grandchildren, Rick Levitsky III (Brie Clark) and Malissa Levitsky (Simon White). Dear sister of Wayne Luciano (Joanna) of Carleton Place. Predeceased by her parents Michael Angelo and Regina (nee Laperrière) Luciano, as well as her three siblings Andy Luciano (Suzanne of Perth), Nonie Anthony (Jack of Perth), and Carl Luciano (Marylou of Arnprior). Also survived by her nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to a funeral mass to be celebrated in St. Isidore’s Church, 1135 March Road, Kanata (South March) on Friday, July 5th at 11:30 a.m. Interment will then take place in the Parish Cemetery followed by a luncheon in the Parish Hall. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Terry, peacefully, in Orchard View by the Mississippi, Almonte, ON. Son of the late Ned and Doris (née Hutchison) Currie, predeceased by his darling wife, Shirley (née Jones). He will be greatly missed by his brother Pat (Joan) and sister Jean, as well as his sons Bill (Rosina) and Dan (Aamina), and daughters Maureen (Dave) and Michelle (Alejandro), and his grandchildren, who all made him proud. Sadly missed by his companion, Lucille Hillier-Kean, as well as his nephews and niece, and his many friends and neighbours. Born in Cranbrook, B.C., Terry spent most of his life happily on the Currie homestead near Panmure, ON. As a young man he enjoyed baseball and hunting. He graduated from SS#3, a one-room schoolhouse on the 3rd Line, to attend Arnprior DHS, and from there to St. Patrick’s College in Ottawa. He began his career teaching in Chesley, Ontario, but soon returned to the Valley to teach French at Almonte DHS. There he made life-long friends, and had many happy years teaching and enthusiastically coaching football. That was also where he met a young fellow teacher, Shirley, whom he pursued until she happily agreed to marry. As a ‘hobby’ farmer, Terry spent many hours on the tractor, with a chainsaw, and repairing fences. His retirement from teaching did not mean a retirement from football or farming, and he spent many further seasons coaching his beloved Thunderbolts, as well as briefer stints with the Arnprior Redmen and West Carleton Wolverines. He helped found Almonte Celtfest and Almonte Alumni to support the school. Always full of life, Terry loved to dance, especially Ottawa Valley square dancing, and was an inveterate traveler who was always planning his next trip. Terry had a life-long passion for telling the story of the people of the Ottawa Valley. He was awarded the Canada 125 medal for his history of St. Peter Celestine’s church in Pakenham, Rock of Faith. He earned his M.A. in history from U. of Ottawa in 2005; the result of his studies was the book The Ottawa Valley’s Great Fire of 1870. Terry became a regular member of the Fitzroy Township Historical Society, serving as President and Past President. He often gave tours of St. Peter Celestine’s. Friends may pay their respects at C. R. Gamble Funeral Home & Chapel Inc. (127 Church St., Almonte, ON. (613-256-3313) On Monday, July 1st, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Peter Celestine’s Catholic Church, Pakenham, ON. BARRIE, George Arthur July 27, 1928 - June 16, 2019 With sadness, the family of George Arthur Barrie announces that he passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019 at the age of 90, but joyful with the knowledge that he is once again reunited with his true love, Aileen Violet Barrie nee Logan (2016). George leaves behind his children; Jan Lee (Terry), Steve Barrie (Wendy), Wendy Graham (Bruce), and Jeff Barrie (Colleen), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Jodi Hendricks (Frank), McKenna and Finley, Ashley Stufko (Luke) and Lincoln, Lee Barrie (Emma) and Annie, Barrie Graham (Kathleen), Lauren and Gavin, Kurtis Graham (Bailey), and “great-bampa” to Remington George, Alyssa Barrie (Matt), and “G-Paw” to Julia Barrie. Survived by his one remaining sibling, Beth Haward (Ritchie), sisters-in-law Isabel Fulton (late Ray), and Annabelle Smith (late Lorne Logan). He will be missed by nieces Linda Miller and Lorna Pleau as well as family and his Villa friends. George was predeceased by son Glen (1957) and grand-daughter Kaitlin Graham (1986). Predeceased by brother Lester (late Beatrice), sisters Lee Heintzman (late Gordon), Joyce Talbot (late Dick), Ethel Young (Earl), and parents Arthur and Elsie (Laughlin). Dad was a longtime farmer, drainage contractor and TransCanada Pipelines drainage consultant. He created an island on the Madawaska River and was a hydro dam builder. Very worshipful, brother George Barrie was a longtime stalwart member of Madawaska Lodge # 196 in Arnprior, and Past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of A.F.& A.M. of Canada in the Province of Ontario. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Visitations were held Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and after, 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Funeral service was celebrated Friday, June 21, 2019 in the Boyce Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment White Lake Community Cemetery. A reception followed the service in the Boyce Reception Centre. ANDERSON, Bruce Thomas (15 Aug 46 - 22 Jun 19) On Saturday, the 22nd of June 2019, Bruce Anderson passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital after a long and stoic fight with kidney disease. He was born on the 15th of August, 1946 in Lethbridge, AB to William and Helen (née Patterson) Anderson (sisters: Judy [d], Janet and Jane). He received his Master of Business Administration from Stanford University in 1972, graduating with distinction. He worked principally as a civil servant (Canada Post and Royal Canadian Mint), and entrepreneur. Bruce is survived by his son Casey Anderson (Stacey Begg). Bruce was an intelligent, authentic and passionate man, who committed himself wholeheartedly to whatever struck his interest. Proudly, he was the Editor of The Gauntlet (University of Calgary’s newspaper) and won the Fraser Institute of Canada Prize in 1992 for his research into the lifecycle of coins, seeking to achieve economies for the government. He loved soccer, refereeing throughout the Ottawa Valley for over ten years, and volunteering his time as a coach and executive member of the Almonte Soccer Club. He adored the theatre, performing under the stage name “G.A. Bain” in a variety of companies in both Almonte and Ottawa, though never fully realizing his life’s ambition of playing “Matt” in Talley’s Folly. He will always be remembered for his stories, wit and generosity. He will live on in the memories of those who cherished his inimitable style, joie de vivre and hunger to “always leave them laughing”. Bruce longed to return to nature, and his ashes will be spread on camping trips in Gatineau and Alberta this summer. Those wishing to remember Bruce are requested to donate in his name to the Ottawa Gladstone Theatre or Almonte General Hospital.

Predeceased by her husband, Jack, she will be deeply missed by her daughters, Jocelyn (John) McPhail of Almonte and Robyn (Dennis) Johnson of Kingston, Ontario, and grandchildren, Casey (Nick), Kelly (Charles), Mitchell and Holly (Ryan). ARNPRIOR DRUG ADDICT CHOOSES LIFE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com His wants are much more modest these days: a job to afford a two-bedroom apartment in Arnprior, monthly bills to pay, walking his daughter to school. And he is closer to that dream than a couple of years ago when he learned, from a prison cell, that his little girl's mother died of an overdose. But he knows that addiction - "a sickness in your memory" - lurks just below the surface, ready to pull him back under. "It will ruin your life like it did mine," said Robert, whose true identity Metroland Media has agreed to conceal to protect his daughter's privacy. "You can choose life: choose bills, a house, family. Or choose the other way and go to jail or die." Robert sits in a corner of the public library near an electric fireplace. A fidgety man in his early 30s, his eyes flame in random directions. Every so often

they make contact before flickering off again. He expresses random thoughts, stringing together a few related sentences before flaming out to a different topic. He grows agitated at a particular memory but reels himself back in. The methadone helps restore calm, lessens the mental cravings (he beat physical cravings cold turkey in jail), allows him to sleep at night. Robert's mother is seated nearby like a protective momma bear, filling gaps in her cub's story. After OPP recently revealed five overdoses have struck Arnprior, the nurse wanted her son's cautionary tale told. Both insist a women's addiction facility in Renfrew County could have saved his daughter's mother. The opioid crisis takes more than 11 lives a day in Canada. It is only a matter of time before another is lost in this community. Robert's reference to choice isn't entirely accurate or fair. A number of causes lead to addiction, and not all are freely cho-

sen. He didn't choose to have an angry father so severely addicted to alcohol that he was too weak to eat. There can be a genetic predisposition to substance abuse. He didn't choose in high school the trauma of losing his best friend. Another cause is often downplayed: drugs give more energy and confidence. Those qualities are rewarded in a capitalist system that requires people to work; especially in jobs like ripping up railway ties from Smiths Falls to Mattawa. "You feel like a machine, like an animal without pain," he said. "I could work all night and didn't need sleep." Work takes a toll on the body. Drugs help with the pain, but cost money. The circle is vicious, and much more complicated than mere choice. However, he maintains that addiction did not begin with family or work. His reputation as a party animal followed him to college in Belleville at the suscepti-

As a result of a traffic stop Aidan Robertson, 21, of Ottawa has been charged with impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The accused was released on a promise to appear and will appear in Renfrew court on July 17. From June 17-June 23, the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 244 calls for service.

As a result of an investigation Taylor Bahm, 20, of McNab/Braeside Township has been charged with; fail to comply with probation order, resist a peace officer and two counts of assault a peace officer.
