From April 19 to 22 the Arnprior Curling Club held an Arena Spiel at the Nick Smith Centre to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The event welcomed 32 teams from the Toronto, Ottawa, Deep River and everywhere in between. On Saturday afternoon in the 'Prior Patch' there was a special moment to mark the milestone. Isobel Munro, a life member of the club for 75 years, Joe Ferrari, current president, Rodger Champagne, long-time member and Don Johnston, lifetime member, cut the cake for the crowd during a break in the action. NOT ENOUGH HOMES FOR CATS AND DOGS

This cat should have been spayed. Spaying/Neutering prevents the births of cats and dogs for whom no homes can be found. In Canada, tens of thousands of cats and dogs are put to death annually in pounds and shelters because there are not enough homes for them. And how many more die on the streets from sickness, injury and starvation?

cation, but is interested in hearing from investors who want to contribute to the $2.88 million cost. Cannabis oil will be the primary product, for wholesale distributors. No ffarm gate sales to individual consumers are planned ffor anytime soon. Burnstown Farms will be singular in this part of Canada for being an outdoor farm. That will mean a smaller carbon footprint, and potential for ecotourism. Were it done on the same scale inside, electricity levels equivalent to powering 12,000 homes a year would be needed. Done outdoors, they take the equivalent of 44,000 cars off the road, Spear said. Phase one sees production start in late 2019. It will require 38 full-time and 18 seasonal workers, many in cultivation-related fields; master growers, production assistants, trimmers, and packagers. Phase two will see an additional 103 ffull-time and 66 seasonal

workers, some of which will be sales, marketing and administrative staff that will work at another nearby yet to be determined site. He is confident tourists will want to visit the farm similar to wineries - to learn more about production. There will be 20 yurts (circular-shaped tents) on site; a restaurant featuring vegetarian foods paired with cannabis products; and a spa offering cannabis therapies. That is phase three and would require another dozen or so workers. Burnstown was selected, Spear said, for its natural beauty, but also because it is within easy driving distance of both Montreal and Toronto. The lengthy winters won't put the company at a significant competitive disadvantage he said. Other regions like the southern mainland in British Columbia - also planning for an outdoor farm - is much more humid. Humidity invites disease such as powdery mildew.

The Ottawa area also off fers optimal daylight time, meaning the flowering and harvesting can take place at a decent time. The plants are hardy, too, so can withstand a frost or two. Spear said the company is taking security as a serious matter. The property will be surrounded by eight-foot high chain-link ffence with barbed wire. Onsite security guards will monitor closed circuit cameras at the entrances and proximity censors. "The risk of theft only exists for a short period in the fall when the plant contains (the active ingredient that causes a high)." Plants gone threw their lifecycle will be composted ffor the next season. Spear said the Township of McNab/Braeside is "quite open to working with us" and has asked for trafffic, noise, and odour studies of the project. Anyone with questions about the project or interested in becoming an investor should email inf fo@burnstownfarms.com.

Eight businesses open, other spaces remain empty DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Two years of major upheaval in Arnprior's downtown commercial did not result in business closures. During a recent council meeting, town economic development officer Lindsay Wilson presented a report showing the downtown revitalization - over the summers of 2016 and 2017 - caused minimal impact. One business moved ffrom the corner of John and Elgin streets up to the Arnprior Shopping Centre. "There were no closures of businesses in the downtown related to the downtown revitalization construction," Wilson wrote. "However, Sew Inspired did relocate to the Arnpri-

or mall due to their location being affected during both years of the construction." The area did see eight new businesses open last year. Another about two dozen locations remain vacant. The shop-local card program called Live, Love Local remains constant in its popularity, providing data that showed 31,130 purchases in 2017. It will be maintained "with the hopes of increasing participation and the addition of new store." Last year's Shop Local Saturday, held April 29, is pushed back to the weekend of May 19 and 20, the opening weekend of year two of the Arnprior Market. More vendors are expected to participate, and improvements on last year's successful debut will be incorporated. Up at the recently-reno-

Arnprior to restore water rescue services to neighbours Town of Renfrew and others to restore water rescue service DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

insideottawavalley.com

Communities surrounding Arnprior without water rescue service will soon see it returned. For the past seven years if someone outside town limits was in trouble on any of the many waterways - they were in real trouble. As in not knowing which emergency service provider, if any, would come to their aid. A recent example was on the Madawaska River near Calabogie on Feb. 25. A kayak tipped and a man fell into the river. He made it to an island in the river, but his kayak was gone and

he had no cellphone. After yelling for more than an hour, someone called 911. "He was wet, hypothermic and nightfall was coming," fire Chief Jeff Crawford told Arnprior council at the April 9 meeting. "He would have been in serious trouble if not rescued. Arnprior water rescue team was on scene within half an hour and had the man safely to shore within 15 minutes." However, Arnprior is the only municipality in the area with a rescue. Others used to pay an annual fee plus case-by-case costs when emergencies arose. That practice ended in 2011 when the town's former chief stopped service. Other municipalities were not paying the annual fee. The new policy doesn't sit well with Crawford and the current council. They agree that Arnprior residents are top priority, but helping neighbours in dis-

tress should be done where possible. "The Arnprior Fire Department's highest priority will always be to protect the lives and property within the town of Arnprior," he said. "However, as chief, I am confident that we have sufficient numbers of trained members to offer water rescue to neighbouring municipalities and protect the town as well." The town will approach several municipalities townships of Greater Madawaska, McNab/Braeside, Horton, Town of Renfrew, and City of Ottawa - to resume services. It will charge an annual fee of $1,000 to cover administrative and related costs and $465 per hour during an incident. Wording in the agreement indemnifies Arnprior and its agents. If it doesn't respond, Arnprior won't be held liable.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com More than 70 Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) volunteers attended a luncheon in their honour at Nick Smith Centre on April 19. ARH president and CEO Eric Hanna thanked members of the Opportunity Shop, board of directors, and the auxiliary for dedicating their time and energy. He offered up some trivia before lunch got underway. The number of hours the 180-auxiliary members volunteered last

He said Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and Grove Nursing Home could not manage without the work done by those in the room. "We couldn't do what we do at ARH if it wasn't for you, the volunteers," Hanna said. "So thank you for what you do." McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett also attended. He said small

Every year the McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society hosts its Medieval Feast. The feasts have been held at various locations and always feature one of the many Celtic cultures. In past years the feast has honoured Irish, Welsh and Scottish cultures. This year's feast features Basque and Galician cultures and their relationship to our more common Irish and Scottish cultures. Chris and Anne Barrett will share memories of their 800-kilometre trek along the El Camino de Santiago. They walked the route of pilgrims from the Basque area of France to the Galician area of Spain. The food, language and customs at the beginning of their Pilgrimage were vastly different from what they experienced toward the end. Being welcomed by bagpipes at the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago was not what one would expect. In 2017 a quarter of a million people walked the El Camino de Santiago. The route from the Basque area winds over mountains, through prairies known as the meseta and ends in rolling green hills similar to Ireland. Dinner patrons are asked to arrive at 4 p.m. and will have two options. They can join Chris Barrett and "Queen Isabella" in a "mini" camino walk through Gillies Grove before dinner or wait in the church where stories will be shared of their trip by Anne Barrett and her special guest "King Ferdinand." Once reassembled in the church, Chris will lead the guests in the Pilgrim's Prayer and after a traditional "hugging of the Statue of St James," dinner will be served. The Medieval Feast will feature foods from the Basque culture including (but not limited to) Basque vegetable soup, chorizo and scallop tapas, fired up chicken Basquaise, apple tarts and thyme custard, and much more! Throughout the evening there will be Spanish music, a jousting competition, tug of war, stone lifting and trivia related to the Celtic Basque culture. The feast is on Saturday, April 28 beginning between 4-4:30 p.m. The event is held at Emmanuel Anglican Church at 287 Harrington St. Tickets are $30 each or $50 per couple. Tickets are available at Aikenheads Drug Store and Dahl's Convea nience in Renfrew and Peebles in the Arnprior Mall. Let the games begin Elections are always an exciting time for our industry but for community newspapers such as Metroland, municipal elections are the bread and butter. Municipal government is closest to the people and can have the biggest impact on how communities are shaped. With the winds of change in the air, we anticipate a full slate of candidates throwing their hats into the ring this spring. Next week, candidates can start filing their nomination papers for seats on local school boards and municipal councils. Those interested can file for nom- Changes have ination between May 1 and been made in July 27, which has been shortened by 120 days from order to increase the 2014 election guidelines. According to informatransparency in tion released last week the local election under the Municipal Elections Act, changes have process. been made in order to increase transparency in the local election process. In addition to the campaign period, these new rules require candidates to open up a bank account before incurring any expenses or accepting financial donations. As well, the limit for contributions has been extended to $1,200 (from $750) and contributions from corporations and trade unions are not permitted. Finally, there will also be a limit to contributions a candidate and their spouse can make to their own campaign. Candidates should also be aware that contributions and expenses can only be accepted or incurred during the campaign period. A guide outlining all of these rules for candidates will be released this month and is available at www.ontario.ca/municipalelections. Another valuable resource are municipal clerks. We applaud all of those who consider putting their names forward in this October's election. Running for a position on a local school board or council is not for the faint of heart and requires a lot of time and dedication to the community. There are countless meeting responsibilities and public appearance expectations, and it's also important to remember that councils are elected by and represent the interests of the community. And thank you to all of our local politicians who currently sit on municipal councils in Renfrew, Arnprior and surrounding areas.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Special thanks To the editor: In this fast-paced world where everyone is busy with personal and professional commitments, it takes a caring individual to volunteer their time and energy to organizations in their communities. Fortunately for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), there are approximately 130,000 caring people who have chosen to share their time with us. This National Volunteer Week was an opportunity to recognize the incredible volunteers in Renfrew County. From selling daffodils during our April campaign, to helping at Relay For Life or assisting with the Git'Er Done Mud Run, our volunteers do it all. Maybe they drive cancer

patients to their medical appointments; share experiences as a cancer survivor with others facing a similar diagnosis through our peer support programs; or perhaps they advocate to your local government for healthy public policies. Whatever role our volunteers take on, we are making an impact because of their dedication and compassion. During a year of transformation at CCS, we are so grateful for our volunteers' continued commitment and passion to our cause. It's thanks to our volunteers that CCS has been able to continue to deliver on our mission from coast-to-coast. Our volunteers enable us to invest in the best cancer research across the country, provide trusted cancer infformation and compassionate support services to peo-

Not part of the job To the editor: This year’s topic for the National Day of Mourning is violence and harassment, a daily reality for far too many workers in Canada. Both are preventable, and should never be seen as “just part of the job." That’s why this Day of Mourning, Canada’s unions are asking our gov-

ernment to do more to prevent and stop workplace violence and harassment. Workplace violence isn’t just physical assault or attacks. It also includes threatening behaviour, verbal or written threats, harassment and verbal abuse. It can happen once, or be part of a pattern. All workers can experience violence and harassment on the job, but there are many factors — such as working with the public, with money, where alcohol is served, or in isolation — that leave some workers at risk. We will not be holding our usual ceremonies at their monuments in Renfrew and Pembroke, but we ask the public to acknowledge the day and remember those workers injured or killed on the job Renfrew & District Labour Counci

Baseball bouncing back in Arnprior Kids' teams to participate in regional leagues DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Baseball appears to be roaring back to Arnprior after petering out some 10 years ago. A call to area primary schools inviting kids to Baseball Canada's Rally Cap program - which sees players rewarded with diffferent coloured ball hats, similar to Karata - saw the camp fill up quickly. Now about 25 to 30 kids in the ffrom seven to nine years old work on skills at Nick Smith Centre. The program moves to McLean Park diamonds when the ffields dry out, wrapping up in mid-July. From that, coach Scott Peplinski will put together a rookie ball team of eight and nine-year-olds. Called the Arnprior Highlanders, the competitive team in the Ontario Baseball Association will play against three teams in Kanata and another in Kemptville. Cornwall and Kingston al-

so have teams that will take on the Highlanders. Playoffs start in mid-August to avoid conflicts with that other popular sport (hockey). "There is a real appetite ffor baseball in Arnprior. That's why I did the coaching clinic," Peplinski said. "It's just a matter of getting more parents to take on roles." Braeside's Pete Chirico also put together a local ball team, albeit to play in the Renfrew County Little League. He formed the combined junior/senior team of 13 to 16-year-olds last year, which went on to improve steadily to the point it may have won the title with a few more practices and games under its belt. Called the Arnprior Minor Baseball (AMB) team, the kids play against two teams in Renfrew, Pembroke, and Petawawa, along with another in Barry's Bay. Eganville may also form a team. Chirico, who grew up playing ball in New Jersey, said he would love to see another team in Arnprior. It just requires a few parents to commit. "Baseball's such big

"They'll use it their whole lives. Grownups play organized or pickup ball. You play it at the company picnic. It's just a great sport, and any-

body can do it." A men's pickup league plays at McLean Park on Tuesday nights. There is an Upper Ottawa Valley Men's Baseball League using the fields. Lob ball is on Sundays. Special Olympics teams also train there.

Program free for seniors GREATER ARNPRIOR SENIORS COUNCIL One of the tasks of the Greater Arnprior senior council is to identify and promote activities and services that make the area an age-friendly community. There is a diamond-in-therough used by some but unknown to many. It is the ffree vascular health exercise program available at the Nick Smith Centre. The classes are intended for seniors 65 years and older. They are rated as vascular-health-friendly. Each class is led by a trained HeartWise-certiffied instructor. The exercises are safe, and the facility suitable for those recovering from common heart issues. The classes are also an opportunity for seniors wishing to participate in a regular fitness program. Except on holidays, four one-hour classes are offfered every week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., in the community hall at the Nick Smith Centre. Classes include cardiorespiratory activity. Exercises are varied to incorporate range of motion, flexibility, isometric strength,

strength with motion and balance (with chair and standing). To get started, go the community hall at the Nick Smith Centre. It will be to your right after you go through the front doors. There is an area to hang coats and to leave your outside shoes. On Tuesday or Thursday, arrive before 12:30 to have time to get oriented before the 12:30 class begins. Introduce yourself to the instructor and advise her if you have any heart or other physical issues. She will welcome you, give you a liability waiver to sign and give direction to get started. Chances are, the visit will be the start to a lasting personal-fitness program. Some exercises require two free weights, a small fflexible ball and an elastic band. After the first week, participants wishing to continue are expected to bring their own equipment. Regular street clothes are fine, but bring suitable footwear — gym shoes, supportive slippers or heavy socks. For more information, call the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301 or email heartwise.ottawaheart.ca.

The hole-y birds are back

Michael Runtz writes about why birds come back early

With the current weather, it seemed as if we turned back the calendar a month. The recent ice storm has played havoc with trees and with many birds, especially those that depend on flying insects for their livelihood. In particular, many of the tree swallows that had returned may not have survived, due to a lack of food. So why do tree swallows come back so early if their meals might be compromised by bad weather? Why not wait for conditions to improve, as do other swallows such as barn and bank? The answer is simple: they come back early in order to attain a good nesting site. Tree swallows, as their name suggests, nest in trees, but unlike most birds, they don't build nests on branches. They build theirs inside abandoned woodpecker homes and other cavities in trees. Cavities are not abundant, and the demand for them is high so that many of the cavity-adopters stay here for the winter (blackcapped chickadees and white-breasted nuthatches are notable examples) or return early in spring, as do tree swallows. When one looks at different groups of birds, often the first members back in each are those species that nest in cavities. The first returning ducks are common and hooded mergansers and wood ducks -- all cavitynesting species. Among the ffirst flycatchers to return are eastern phoebes (which

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column nest in crevices on cliffs or in other sheltered sites) and great crested flycatchers, which are cavity-adopters. The first migratory thrushes back are eastern bluebirds, which, of course, nest in cavities. Even small owls are cavity-adopters; while eastern screech owls stay here yearround, the tiny northern saw-whet owls are the first migratory owls to return. A few mammals live in holes in trees. Both northern and southern flying squirrels live in cavities, which leaves even fewer homes up for grabs when the cavity-adopting birds return. There is even a hawklike bird that nests in cavities. American kestrels are small falcons that perch along country roadsides on telephone wires, slowly pumping their tails as they scan fields for small prey such as meadow voles and, later in summer, grasshoppers. It should come as no surprise that kestrels return early because they nest in cavities, usually sizeable ones in larger trees, often created when rot sets in where a branch broke off. Kestrel numbers have dropped in recent years, and it's possible that the lack of suitable nest sites is one reason. Increasingly dead trees are being cut down for firewood or being removed as new devel-

As kestrels nest at the edge of woodlands, not in the interior, they are particularly affected by a lack of suitable trees. But there is good news ffor kestrels and other cavity-adopting birds. Most readily accept artificial cavities in the form of nest boxes. Birdhouses can be purchased or can be easily built from plans available on the internet. If you put up nest boxes, be sure to keep them clean and predator-proof.

Living on the edge: Learning from the grey jays of Algonquin Park Pelted and whipped by mid-April's icy snow and high winds, scientist Alex Sutton was nonetheless having a great day with the discovery of "five charcoal-coloured fluffs" during a search and check of grey jay nests. As he celebrated on Twitter, "For only the second time in over 50 years of study in Algonquin Provincial Park, a female #CanadaJay has five young in a single nest! Lots of mouths to feed now." The discovery brought some needed good news about a bird whose numbers have been slowly sinking; an Algonquin study - the longest of its kind in the world - shows a 50-per-cent decline in the grey jay population since 1977. Only 13 grey jays (also known as Canada jay/whisky Jack), the lowest in 44 years, were counted during the park's 2017 Christmas Bird Count. Sutton, a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph "engaged by all things grey jay," is especially interested in what is driving the population dynamics. The guest speaker at the May 1 meeting of the Macnamara Club, he will provide an overview of what we have learned studying grey jays living on the edge. Can grey jays survive the warmer weather? The grey jay's range is all across Canada's boreal and mountain forests, yet until 2016, when the Royal Canadian Geographic Society sparked controversy by endorsing the grey jay as our national bird, few Canadians had met or known them. While the black-capped chickadee was naturalist Michael Runtz's first choice, readers of his weekly column may recall he had "nothing but admiration for the grey jay's selection i.e. found across Canada, hardy, friendly and smart." Grey jays are well adapted to not only survive, but thrive in harsh winter conditions. "Grey jays are pretty remarkable," adds Sutton in an Algonquin Research station video, Birds with a Personality - The Grey Jays of Algonquin Park. "First of all, they are found in every province and territory in Canada. Second they cache food in the fall. [That's when Sutton and his fellow researchers conduct their population census.] They'll store individual food items throughout their territory and then they'll slowly retrieve those caches throughout the winter, enabling them to survive the harsh winters of Algonquin." "The winter is also when the researchers return, trying to locate all their nests to then band and record the nestlings and monitor whether or not they survive until the next fall." Fewer than half of the grey jay territories identiF ffied in the 1970s are filled today . and the researchers think they know why: "fridge failure" notes an Ontario Parks weblog, "Grey jays, the real early birds." "Most Grey jay food is perishable. Thanks to climate change, winters are getting warmer. The stashed food freezes and thaws, freezes and thaws. As a result, it could be going bad." Don't miss "Life on the edge: What we have learned ffrom the Grey jays of Algonquin Park." When: Tuesday, May 1, 7:30 p.m. Where: Arnprior Curling Club, 15 Galvin St., Arnprior Cost: Meetings (and presentations) are free for club members and $5 for guests. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, organize a group activity with friends and family members this week. This is a good opportunity to reconnect with loved ones you may not have seen in some time.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Work goes quite well for you this week, Capricorn. But you’re having difficulty finding traction at home. Take a day to catch up on projects at home to quiet your mind.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, if you have been feeling creative and ambitious, consider giving a new hobby a try. An artistic project is fitting, but anything that inspires you will suffice.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Put your ambitions into action, Scorpio. It’s one thing to give lip service to ideas, but it’s another to get started toward goals. The latter may lead to a more fulfilling life.
