NEWS
McNab Public School celebrates 50 years of excellence TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com McNab Public School is celebrating 50 years in 2018. Commemorating the golden anniversary, the school hosted an open house social on April 28 from 1 to 4 p.m., which was well attended by former classmates and staff. Festivities encompassed classroom tours, newsletters, yearbooks and photos from past decades as well as light snacks and refreshments. A celebratory cake cutting was held in the school's gymnasium, with the dessert specially made by the White Lakes Womens' Institute. Although she was unable to attend Saturday's event, former teacher Gladys (Anderson) Sidock sent the following message: "What a wonderful time to get together. I am so sorry and disappointed that I cannot attend." Sidock taught at McNab
Public School when it opened its doors in 1967, enjoying all of her 11 years. Today, she loves running into former students, listening as they tell her about their lives. "To the present staff and students, you are so lucky to be in the McNab learning environment," she noted. Friends and classmates Georgia Quinn and Kim (Gillan) Flynn smiled and laughed as they toured classroom nine. The McNab/ Braeside residents started at McNab Public School in 1973-1974, graduating Grade 8 in 1982. Today, Quinn is Burnstown's postmaster and Flynn is a foot care nurse servicing Renfrew and Arnprior. Lillian Collins taught Grades 1 through 4 at the school, from 1969 to 1974. She walked through one of her former classrooms on Saturday, noticing how technology has completely changed the landscape.

McNab/Braeside resident Leonard Laventure points to himself in his 2003/2004 Grade 8 class photo. He is now involved with the Arnprior & District Neighbourlink Fountain. "I spent the rest of my career - 15 years - teaching at the former Alexander Reid Public School," Collins said. Former student and
McNab/Braeside resident Leonard Laventure spent time going through the year books from past decades, which were on display in the
school's gymnasium. He graduated from Grade 8 in 2004. Today, he is involved with the Arnprior & District Neighbourlink Fountain.
Effective leaders On April 28, people gathered to celebrate the founding of McNab Public School and reflect on its many successes. These achievements were possible because of students, staff and parents and more. The school's principals from the very beginning are as follows: Gord Cross (September 1967 to June 1973), Don Tye (September 1973 to June 1982), Harry Holtz (September 1982 to June 1988), Doug Fraser (September 1988 to December 1995), Dagmar Stonehouse (January 1996 to June 2000), Brian Teske (September 2000 to January 2003), Dennis Jenkins (February 2003 to June 2005), Jodie Barrett (September 2005 to June 2010), Bronwyn Scott (September 2010 to June 2013), Tracey Stevens (September 2013 to June 2017) and Steve Griffiths (September 2017 to current). McNab Public School is located at 1164 Stewartville Road.

Walk straight into grief
Arnprior specialist helps mourners navigate their journey DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com An elder, according to Indigenous teachings, tells a child that two wolves roam in every one of us: one of anger and fear, the other joy and compassion. The child asks which one wins. The elder replies, "The one you feed." Gina Pilon shared the snippet during her Good Grief talk with about 35 members of the ArnpriorBraeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program. Held at East Side Mario's April 25, the certified grief recovery specialist explored the ups and downs of the mourning process. That's right, ups, not just downs. "Yes, grief has some good in it," said Pilon, who draws on personal experience and her daily interactions at Pilon Family Funeral Home. Compassion is the guiding light and reward from good grief. When mourners have compassion for themselves - allow feelings of sadness and despair to come and go - their compassion for others manifests. She said feelings are never wrong, even anger at, say, the passing of a loved one. The best approach is to let the feeling flow through, because it will always pass within moments. "Don't avoid feeling
grief. Walk into it straight on," she said. "That's how you get through it. Sit with it, accept it, and let the tears out." The average feeling lasts about 90 seconds, she said, but the phrase "time heals all wounds" is only true if feelings are accepted and allowed to pass. Pilon takes a rationalist's view of the grieving process. It isn't about being an objective observer of oneself, but more a knowledge that all feelings come and go: that is reality. The feelings we tend to downplay, such as anger and remorse, are not negative in themselves. They are made negative through fear. It is fear
that causes the terrible effects. The fear of allowing the feelings to flow through causes addictions and distractions. Then there is fear of being judged (often based on our willingness to judge others). Again, though, compassion can dissipate fear. "When you see someone who is really bitter and angry; that's just the pain coming out in a nasty way," she said. "They live in fear. They must be suffering from a tremendous amount of grief that they haven't recovered from." She said fear paralyzes. Questioning God, the cycle of why, trying to
comprehend the incomprehensible. "It's not ours to know why. Good grief needs action," she said. "It's knowing that grief is normal. You see it in people's faces every day. It's how you navigate it that matters." A Grief Recovery Drop In is held on the first Wednesday of each month from 7-9 p.m. at Pilon Family Funeral Home Reception Centre at 50 John St. N. (please use back entrance). It is a free service. The next Seniors at Home topic at East Side Mario's, held May 23, covers various aspects of cannabis. Cost is $6. For more, contact Liz Wall at 613-623-7981.

Families serving families is at the core of success DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Siblings, fathers and mothers, daughters and sons, even cousins: all have grown up working at the Prior over the last two-anda-half decades. And they've enjoyed watching the families of patrons grow with them. "So many people come and say they've been here since they were kids," said Robin Langford. "We've watched them grow up." A 25th anniversary is a good time to reflect on the ups and downs of life in the restaurant business. The crew at The Prior Sports Bar & Restaurant did just that at a party held off-site. Erica Nicholson remembers that first day, March 20, 1993.
"We were supposed to open at 8 at night and at 7 cars were in the parking lot," she said, sharing a laugh with her sister Langford at the memory. "We were still doing work when the doors opened. We were taking ladders out the back door!" What started on a high quickly hit a low on the first Friday. About 100 employees from Boeing - now Arnprior Aerospace - descended on The Prior for lunch. They had 45 minutes. "We screwed up. A lot. And we knew we did," Langford said. "We tried to make up for it. We brought over $15 gift certificates and said, 'Give us another chance.'" They knew intuitively that bad reviews circulate quickly in a small town. And local customers will be the lifeline of the business. They couldn't afford to have an off lunch and hope out-oftown people will make up for it. Needless to say, the sec-
ond chance worked. At the time when the only establishment of its kind was Branigan's (now an East Side Mario's), and the sports bar at Winners Circle strip mall was past its time. Still, some would say opening a restaurant is a fool's errand. Up to 90 per cent fail in the first year. It might take liquid courage to dream of success. "That's how it started. We were sitting around having a few beers and started talking about it," Nicholson said. "We even put it on a plaque: over a few beers." In their case it wasn't such a crazy idea. They were young and done with university; no mortgages, time-consuming children; experience in the business; and solid partnerships. "We didn't have a lot to lose," Langford said. They quickly decided to move from 'bar' to 'restaurant' in part for business reasons, but also lifestyle. They didn't want to stay up
Derek Dunn/Metroland
Robin Langford and Erica Nicholson are the sister team at the heart of The Prior Sports Bar & Restaurant. Celebrating 25 years in business, The Prior is much more than a spot for sports teams to enjoy food and fanfare. It is a family business that has watched Arnprior families grow through the generations. late and not every bar customer is well behaved. Reputation goes both ways: for the business and customer. They protect the familyfriendly atmosphere. The spacious spot with plenty of TVs and sports paraphernalia is wellknown as the place to go for
sports teams. Many local and out-of-town teams have been coming for years. But The Prior also has many individuals who come every day. Others bring their family once a week. Then there is "conservative corner" where all the political problems are
solved, no matter how daunting. Captain Kirk Langford has been at the helm forever, handing out drinks and always up for a good conversation. Plenty of bands have entertained. Wing nuts dutifully line up out the door on Wednesdays. Those in the know are there on Monday nights for the fajita deal. "It is a good deal. We don't want to empty people's pockets on one night," Robin said. "That's not what it's about at all." The sisters praised the staff, saying how thankful they are to have many longtime employees who enjoy socializing as they work. And then there are the little things. The day after St. Patrick's Day, on a bit of a whim, they placed gift certificates on windshields for customers who left their cars behind. A small pat on the back for doing the right thing; not unlike what family members do for one another.

"There's always enough talent, but the dedication and qualities that are bigger than just the grind of rehearsal." He pointed to a student, Tessa Roberts, organizing a Warm and Fuzzy Day where the instruments were set-aside for a potluck lunch. Keep safe against ticks and Lyme disease As daytime temperatures rise above 4°C, ticks become active. If bitten by a tick you may be at risk of getting Lyme disease. Ticks are present throughout the entire Renfrew County area and their life cycle now starts in April and can continue through to November, as long as the temperature stays at least four degrees above freezing. Taking precautions will help to reduce your risk of getting bitten by a tick. If you dress in light-coloured clothing, it makes adult ticks and nymphs (small stage of the tick), easier to see when they are on you as they are darker in colour. Do a tick check when you or your children return inside. Don't forget your pets - even if they don't go outdoors (like cats), anyone can bring them inside and they can find your indoor pet. If possible have someone check you from the back, or hop in a quick shower to help remove any unattached ticks. You can also put your clothes in a hot dryer for several minutes, which has been found to kill ticks. It is important to know that not all ticks carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Lyme disease transmission depends on the length of time the infected tick is attached. Ticks that are removed quickly and have been attached for less than 24 hours are not likely to transfer the bacteria. However, if the tick has been attached for longer than a day, you may be at an increased risk and it is recommended that you consult your health care provider. If you find a fat tick, it is an indication that it has been feeding for a longer period of time and you should provide this information to your health care provider. Lyme disease symptoms can range from a bullseye rash around the bite area, to headache, fever and muscle/joint pain. Ticks often feed on deer or geese, but don't infect them very often. The tick that spreads Lyme disease has a two-year life cycle, and feeds once in each of its three life stages larvae, nymph, and adult. Symptoms can appear from three days to several weeks following a tick bite. They include: fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, or swollen lymph nodes. Consult your health care provider as soon as you experience any of these symptoms.

It’s not legal gun owners who commit crimes To the editor: I feel I must respond to Mary-Joan Hale's letter regarding gun control. It is not the legal gun owners who commit the crimes, it is the criminals. I respect the fact that you recognize that a farmer and a hunter want to have guns. What they don't want is a registration of their personal property so that at some point in time someone from the government will come to take it away. You are probably saying that is not the intent of our government. Look at history, Ger-

I firmly believe that it is the agenda of a Liberal government. You mention the killings in the United States; if you looked at the statistics the highest crime rated states like Illinois have the strictest gun regulations. Look at the statistics of Chicago, a gun free city. Those states like Texas or Arizona have little restrictions on gun ownership and have some of the lowest crime rates. AK47. I believe that the AK47 is a military weapon not made available for the public. I may be wrong on that one. However the AR15 is no different than a sporting rifle except that it looks scary. You have the wrong impression of a hunter that blasts a deer so that there is little meat left. Wow! What a sad statement. I need not to comment any more on that. When a police is approaching a home where there is a domestic disturbance call, he should not have to rely on a gun registry. He should anticipate
that there is a gun there. If the registry does not show a gun in the residence he would be foolish in ignoring the fact that there is a possibility that there is one. Do some research on how many killings in Canada are committed by long guns. Conservatives are in favour of freedom to own guns. Bob Boyer Renfrew

Great concerts are now playing in your neighbourhood
Listen to the beautiful sounds of nature, urges Michael Runtz
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column From Gregorian chant to Baroque and classic rock, our species enjoys music in many forms. That enjoyment is reflected in the success of concerts such as Woodstock, and of musicals both past and present. Nature, too, has concerts. These occur annually but are seasonal with many lasting a few weeks at best. Unlike those of our species, in nature's concerts the musicians and singers are always one and the same. Currently, frogs and toads are putting on great performances in local wetlands. The first frogs to sing are the ones that spent the winter buried in the soil in a frozen state. Due to the late arrival of spring this year, only relatively recently have the rocking-chair creaks of chorus frogs, the duck-like
clacks of wood frogs, and the shrill peeps of spring peepers been heard. Next to sing were the leopard frogs, whose vocal offerings sound very much like loud snores. Leopard frogs spent the winter on the bottom of ponds safely out of the reach of freezing temperatures for they, unlike the earliest singers, die when exposed to subzero conditions. Next to be heard are the shrill trills of American toads, which in early fall dig their way down below the frost line. They will have likely started singing by the time this column hits print. The final concerts of the year are those of bullfrogs, the baritones of the amphibian world. Only male frogs and toads sing, and they amplify their sounds in a unique way. Before they sing they take air into the lungs, closing their nostrils after each inhalation. Air from the lungs is forced into throat sacs, which inflate like balloons. In many species such as spring peepers and American toads, there is one sac situated below their mouth. A few species including leopard frogs have one situated on both sides of their mouth. After the sacs are fully inflated, air is forcefully released from the lungs through the larynx, and into them sacs. The sacs serve as resonating chambers and amplify the sounds. Unlike vocal sound produced by other animals,

Michael Runtz/submitted
The inflatable vocal sacs of American Toads and frogs act as amplifiers when they sing. air doesn't leave the mouth of singing amphibians; it just moves back and forth between the lungs and vocal sac(s). The amplification by the sacs is more than impressive; standing next to a group of singing spring peepers, tiny frogs the size of your thumbnail, can be an ear piercing experience! Before they perform, male frogs stake out territories from where they sing. It is important for females to choose good singers for they usually occupy better habitats for egg laying. Studies have shown that female bullfrogs choose males with the deepest voices. Deeper voices are produced by larger
males, which sing from the best territories, real estate that was acquired by brute force. Enjoy the concerts of these remarkable animals while they last. After all, great performances that are free are rare these days! Emergency Preparedness Week runs May 6-12. It's an annual event organized by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with the provinces, territories and other partners. After last year's magnitude of catastrophic events, it's the perfect time for Canadians to reflect on the past, to prepare for what lays ahead. FirstOnSite Restoration has
responded to every catastrophic event across the country over recent years - the 2013 Alberta and GTA floods, the Goderich Tornado, and the Fort McMurray and BC Wildfires winter ice storms, flooding in Montreal and Windsor and Atlantic hurricanes To mark Emergency Preparedness Week, FirstOnSite Restoration is sharing disaster preparation tips for businesses
and homes. Here are a number of proactive measures that can be set in place to prepare. FirstOnSite Restoration's preparedness tips for all kinds of disaster: • Keep all important hard copy documents such as passports, birth certificates, deeds and wills in a safety deposit box. Failing that, make sure you have originals or copies some-
where off site. • Take digital photos or videos of your home or business and contents. This will help with the claims process in the event of a disaster. Also, itemize new goods or assets located within the building each year when you renew your insurance policy. • Prepare an emergency contact list of people to call and keep it offsite. This list should
include trusted friends and family, business partners, insurers and anyone else you might need to contact in an emergency. • Routinely inspect your home for areas that could cause problems in a disaster. Pay particular attention to the roof, windows and sump pump. • Have your insurer on speed dial in the event of an emergency.

Arnprior students participate in Mental Health Week events DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Students took part in several events at Arnprior District High School in the days prior to Mental Health Week. On May 2 the Grade 10 students and helpers from Grade 12 dispersed from the small gym to various rooms. Community members volunteered to teach fitness classes, talk nutrition, offer advice to new drivers, warn of addictions, and discuss various aspects of cannabis. "A lot of you are great self-advocates, but we could always learn more," teacher Laura Carter told the kids. "We have a lot of people in the community who want to help empower you. We all know life is adversity. We have roadblocks but most are temporary and we get past them."

Arnprior Regional Health Foundation is pleased to announce that Glenn Arthur and Ed Reid have graciously accepted the roles of campaign co-chairs for the Come Home to Great Care campaign. The Arnprior Regional Health Foundation is in the planning stages of a capital campaign to help build the new Grove and fund vital medical equipment. The Grove is the only licensed long-term care nursing home in the entire Arnprior region, where the demand for such care exceeds the current capacity of the Grove. Additionally, contrary to popular belief, new medical equipment and other capital expenditures are not covered by provincial funding. Hospitals are 100 per cent responsible for the purchase of equipment. Having served as director of recreation for the Town of Arnprior for 35 years, Glenn

It's a project that's gotten people listening - and talking. Former Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Sean Conway was the latest guest at the Need to Know speaker series, which was launched two years ago. Conway packed the Neat Coffee Shop May 2 for his talk 'Aspects of a Distinct Society: The Economic and Political Culture of the Ottawa Valley in the 19th Century.' He outlined some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Ottawa Valley that in those early years made it a very different
place than the rest of Ontario. Among the characters mentioned were M.J. O'Brien and Charlotte Whitton. "We had a full house on May 2 at Sean Conway's event with most people having dinner at Neat beforehand and the positive energy level in the room was palpable," said series organizer Dave Ainsworth. "This is what I would like to achieve for every event." This is the second season for Need to Know and Ainsworth hopes to bring back the program this fall. "Running these events has been a really interesting ride. Listening to really competent speakers in a small venue is a treat. The question and answer sections can be as interesting as the presentation and hearing client feed-back and suggestions is always rewarding and useful," said Ainsworth. To help bolster attendance at the events, Ains-
worth is considering running next season's events on Sunday afternoons at Neat. Continuing efforts to explore a wide array of topics, next up for the series is a look at Islamism and western societies. Speaker Salim Mansur has addressed this topic in his new book 'The Qur'an Problem' and will be the featured speaker on May 16. He addresses conflicts within the Muslim world and will offer his views in a number of areas. "This is a great opportunity to hear from a Muslim intellectual who has strong views on the subject and has the courage to openly share them with others. As he has stated 'In the 21st century, anyone who chooses to be a dissident Muslim must deal with serious loneliness,'" says an event press release. Tickets, $15, are available at neatmusicandcoffee.ca or at the door.

November 21, 1981 to May 13, 2009 In Loving Memory of our Dear, Son, Brother and Uncle. It is nine years now Nathan, however we do not need a special day or anniversary to bring you to mind. The days we do not think of you would be impossible to find. I came across a picture of you recently which I had not seen and I was totally lost in that quality day. Oh, your beautiful smile and teeth! I still have a difficult time cherishing special memories with fondness rather than sadness! On the brighter side Nath, do I have great news to tell you! Devin and Hailey have a beautiful little girl, Macy! She was born on my birthday! The best present that I have ever received! We are all so in love with this special little doll! I just know how excited you would have been for Devin, and of course your Mother! Ryan and Devin are doing great. I am really proud of them Nath! Of course, I have to mention our other great pleasure, Charlie! Going to be ten this summer and is growing up way too fast! Oh, how you would enjoy fishing with him! I think he could probably give you some pointers on fishing! Your Dad and I are so blessed to have all these possessions! Your Dad and I are fine, still together! Lol! Never ending winter has prolonged our cottage life. Looking so forward to the summer ahead. You are in the air we breathe up there Nathan Leclaire, our beautiful Angel! You have touched our world in so many ways! We spent part of the hunt at the cottage because we knew you were there Nath! Nobody has been able to compete with your Deer Mount on the wall. Hope you and your much loved Gramps are having a blast! We know you are taking great care of him! Please know that we love you as much in death as we did in life! Wrap your arms around them Lord and let them know they are loved until we can get to that land above! Mom, Dad, Ryan, Devin, Charlie and Macy
Winkovics, Robert
Roberts’ (Bob) life stood still on October 19th, 2017 at 6 A.M. I held his face in my hands, looked into those marvelous blue eyes and whispered I Love You, he closed his eyes and opened them again and looked into my eyes until his Spirit left this wonderful earth that we had shared. Life without him is very difficult, we miss his loving smile, his caring hands, his love of nature, his artistic flair in his paintings, the homes that we have constructed and his love of creating a beautiful campground for all to enjoy. Thank you so much for your kind support, hearing treasured memories from so many of you gives us the pleasure of celebrating his life on Saturday May 19, 2018 at BonaVista Campground Recreation hall between the hours of 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. We will be planting a Red Oak some time in the spring in Bobs’ Memory.

morning started just as daybreak began. I would huddle down under the covers listening to Father starting the stove, and Mother hurrying to get breakfast on the table so that Father and the boys could get out to the barn to do the morning chores. It was time to work the fields. When the weather allowed it, Father would be gone before we left for school ... gone with the team and whatever farm equipment he needed to take to the back fields. Like every neighbour in Northcote, our farm was long and narrow, and on the old map my sister Audrey showed me, each farm looked like someone had laid down long pieces of ribbon from the Northcote Side Road, right across
With winter long gone, and the warm weather of spring upon us, everything changed on the farm. It was time for Father to tend to the crops, and that meant nothing was the same as it had been over the winter. Now the days for Father and the brothers started earlier. Mother would have set the breakfast table before going to bed, and the sounds of

the Bonnechere River with each farm being one of the strips. Father often said if the farm was shorter and wider, he wouldn't have to do so much walking to get from one end of our property to the other. Now it was time to get onto the land and Father's day started as the sun was coming up. He would be gone all day, with Mother packing him a lunch so that he wouldn't have to make the long trek back for his noon meal. Everything depended on the weather. If it rained, there was no going to the back fields until everything had dried up. And when that happened I would see Father pacing in the barns, checking the sky, and I could see a tenseness in his shoulders, because getting on the land was all he could think about. When we got home from school, the boys knew they would be doing the chores. Father wouldn't be coming back from the far reaches of the farm until he had put in a good day's work. Supper would be late too. I would sit on the back stoop waiting to see Father, like a dot in the sky, coming from beyond the west hill, walking behind the team. If he hadn't finished the field he was working on, the piece of machinery would be left there until the next day, when once again the long hours of daylight would find him in the farthest part of our farm. I could see a new tiredness in Father when it came time to work the land. Although he never seemed to lose his appetite, after supper his step was slower moving to the rocking chair by the Findlay Oval. If it had been a very hot day, Mother would let the fire go out after our meal, but Father still favoured sitting with his feet up on the oven door, with the Ottawa Farm Journal in his lap. After the kitchen was redded up, and we children and Mother sat
around the old pine table, I couldn't take my eyes off Father. He would start reading, but that time of year, he never seemed to get beyond the first page. I would see his head start to nod, and his pipe, which rarely left his mouth, would fall to his chest, the paper would slide to the floor, and soon, he would be sound asleep. I was always amazed that the loud talk of my three brothers around the kitchen table, couldn't keep Father awake. Even when it was time for us to climb the stairs, I could still hear the soft snores, as his body slouched lower and lower into the old rocker. Mother would go over to him, and gently take his pipe, touch him on his shoulder, and pick up the Ottawa Farm Journal. He would be in his bed off the kitchen before the last of us was ready to go upstairs. Another day would be over for Father. Another day of trying to outsmart the weather. Another day of backbreaking work in the faroff fields of that long strip of land in Northcote. I ached for him, but I knew our survival depended on those long hours spent down the hill from the barns, over the creek and past the west hill. And in my prayers I asked that he be given the strength to do what had to be done to help us survive the Depression raging all around us. The long winter months so far away, depended on it. The maximum number of teams for the weekend is 16. With the tournament more than half full, there is limited space available. Teams will be accepted on a 'first to email' basis. Once confirmed, you will receive the tournament rules and other details about the weekend.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
