DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Long-time municipal politician Walter Stack is making a bid to become Arnprior's next mayor. Stack signed up early for the position, and is the only one to do so. On the first day candidates could register, May 1, Dan Lynch signed up for county councillor (currently known as 'reeve') and Ted Strike put his name down for councillor again. Both sit on council this term. Stack, who is reeve - which means he represents the town at county council - registered on May 8. In McNab/Braeside, the only candidate to register is Scott Brum for a council seat. Andy Bray registered for trustee of the Catholic District School Board, a position he holds now. There are no other candidates who have official stepped forward. Mayor David Reid made it known he isn't running again. The last day to file papers is July 27, at 2 p.m. The municipal election is set for Oct. 22.

Progressive Conservative leader plays to large crowd of supporters DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com A large and enthusiastic crowd welcomed Doug Ford to Renfrew on day one of the Ontario election. About 1,000 people, many sporting pins of the local candidate and carrying signs that read "Doug for the people" jammed into the armouries building. The cheering and frantic sign waving began when the Progressive Conservative leader took to the stage, and would rise like a blue and white wave each time he hit on what could become frequent talking points. Among them is a promise that everyone on minimum wage will "pay zero tax"
which he said amounts to $850 per person per year. He will also add 15,000 long-term care beds by the second mandate, and 15,000 more in 2024, he said. Some further points he raised with the crowd include: . For 15 years Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne has been "destroying this province" . Ontario has the highest subnational debt in the world . He will lower hydro rates because "people have to choose between heating and eating" . Hydro One's top executive is paid $16,000 per day, and his "crony buddies" get $14 million bonuses "of your money" . He will hire an external auditor to find out "who's been getting rich off your money, and they will be held accountable" . Every single Grade 6 math student taking standardized tests will be in the highest percentile in the

The sex education curriculum will be replaced because it didn't consult parents . On Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he'll "fix his lit-
tle red wagon" Ford, considered the front-runner to win the June 7 election, promised some relief for small businesses, while describing his possible government as responsible,
transparent, and accountable. "A new day will dawn on Ontario, a day of prosperity, of growth. We will once again be the engine of Canada," he said. "This is a movement
like I've never seen in 30 years." He was joined on stage by area MPP John Yakabuski. The two raised hands together. While Ford has packed houses in larger communities, for a town of about 8,000 the turnout is considered very high. Area MP Cheryl Gallant was at the rally and said she wasn't surprised. She talked to many in the crowd and said they want to know Ford the man and hear about policies that will affect children. Asked why he chose Renfrew on the first day of the election, Gallant said Renfrew County is a unique area unlike cities, unlike the north and south. Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod was also on hand. She said it is an important signal that Ford chose to visit a rural riding on his first day. She suggested the Liberal government ignored rural needs but that a PC government will give it attention.

Critics of the nuclear waste disposal site plan on the Ottawa River are exaggerating concerns, the reeve of Arnprior indicated. Walter Stack represents the town at county council and has meet with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), the private sector conglomerate overseeing the plan, on several occasions. He said at a recent town council meeting that of the three grades of waste, the site near Chalk River would only accept the lowest grade. And that less than one per cent will be shipped in from other regions. Stack also noted that a plan is needed; the buildings must be replaced and any ground contami-
nation must be cleaned up. The site has shipped liquid waste to the U.S. for decades. The environmental groups and First Nations leaders who have raised concerns are looking for headlines, he suggested. "It's become a bit of a vehicle to get on media," Stack said, in response to a letter sent to area politicians by residents living near the site. The residents are with old Fort William Cottagers' Association and Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area. CNL's "irresponsible proposals" do not comply with international guidance on how to take care of radioactive waste, reads the letter. "Short term economic gain must not compromise for centuries to come the Ottawa River,
the local environment and the health and safety of all people living downriver," reads the letter. "Taxpayers' money should only be spent to build the best facilities possible not the quick and dirty ones proposed by CNL. Building a stateof-the-art facility will actually be a greater stimulus to the local economy and increase the number of long-term jobs required." They've asked municipalities to publicly oppose the plan. At least 20 all on the Quebec side of the river - have done so. Five First Nations and 39 Canadian environmental and citizen groups have called on the International Atomic Energy Agency to investigate radioactive waste abandonment plans in Canada.

Arnprior names street after Second World War veteran Bert Tourangeau Street won't be built for years, but namesake sees the sign DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com An elderly man gets to see his name on a street sign well ahead of the road being built, thanks to a builder's initiative. About a decade ago Arnprior adopted a policy that sees all new roads in town be named after local war veterans. However, a road in the growing Callahan Estates neighbourhood won't be built for a few years, yet the sign has already gone up. A poppy and the name Bert Tourangeau Street went up recently, after the 92-year-old's son Shane put in the request to developer Campanale Homes. "I've always been a big
time fan of veterans and of honouring them," Shane said, standing near the sign with his dad. "So I think this is a really great thing to do." Bert said he never expected to see his name on a street sign. The oldest member of Arnprior's legion, who for 21 years was a member of the volunteer fire department, has another preference though. "I think it would be a good idea to name them after those who were killed overseas," Bert said. Shane said the town wanted to honour his service back home too. He said Bert was also renowned as town tier. In a time when tying the proper knot was a practical, daily necessity, Bert applied some of what he learned in the navy back in his community. Bert enlisted with the navy in 1943 and was assigned duty on a navy corvette named the Wetaskiwin. The warship was for submarine detection in the

The "able seaman" was perched up on deck sending out the signals. When discharged in 1946, Bert returned to Arnprior where he spent 35 years working for M. Sullivan & Son contractors. Last year he was honoured as a 70-year member of Royal Canadian Legion branch 174.
Campanale's credits a partnership with town staff for getting the sign up early. "We want to extend thanks to Robin Paquette and John Bernier at the Town of Arnprior for expediting the installation process of the street sign so it could be present during the lifetime of Bert Tourangeau," said president Tony Campanale.

OPP investigate sexual assault complaints
insideottawavalley.com
Two separate sexual assault complaints were received by the Renfrew OPP during the past week. On Monday, April 30 a teenage male reported being sexually assaulted by an adult male that the teen met on a social media site. As a result of the investigation Michael Daly, 56, of Hastings Highland Township was charged with sexual assault of a person under 16, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching of a person under 16. The accused was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on May 30. Det. Const. Barry Nisbet led the investigation. On Friday, May 4 an adult female reported being sexually assaulted in 2002. Const. Lindsay Moore is leading the investigation. Impaired driving A concerned citizen recently called the OPP after spotting a male driving a lawn tractor in Arnprior whom they believed was impaired, says this week's report from the Renfrew detachment. OPP officers stopped the male near the intersection of Daniel Street and Charles Street. The male had been drinking, had an open can of beer in a cup holder, and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following breath tests at the detachment, a 66-year-old man from Arnprior was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 mgs, and two counts of breach of probation. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. Const.
Derek Andrechek led the investigation. Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 12 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with assault, one male was charged with two counts of domestic mischief, and one male was charged with overcoming resistance by choking, assault and three counts of domestic mischief. No other criminal offences were alleged. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship, help is available. The Women's Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is also available 24/7 for information and support at 1-800663-3060. In emergencies call 911. Break-ins On the afternoon of Sunday, April 22, a residence on Stones Lake Road in Greater Madawaska Township was entered while the occupants were away. Legal records and documents, along with personal banking documents were stolen. Also stolen was a Rotring 600 18k gold Bauhaus fountain pen. Const. Patrick O'Connor is continuing to investigate. Thefts A wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the parking lot at Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown. The vehicle was in the parking lot on Friday, May 3 from 5-11
p.m. The victim did not discover the wallet was stolen until the next morning. By the time it was reported to police, several stolen credit cards had been used at a few businesses in Ottawa. Const. Kayla Couture is leading the investigation. Police are investigating the theft of several boat motors from The White Lake Marina in White Lake. The victim advised that three Mercury motors were stolen, 120 horsepower, and two 9.9 horsepower between May 4 at 5 p.m., and May 6 at noon. A suspect vehicle was seen at the property on Saturday May 5 at 11 p.m. The vehicle was an early 2000 dark blue four door Chevrolet pickup with a scratch down the driver's side of the truck, parked in the front entrance way. Const. Kayla Couture is investigating. Crime Stoppers Crime Stoppers Pembroke/Renfrew County believes that someone may have information that could assist police in solving these crimes. Made of a specialized zirconium alloy, the tubes hold the fuel bundles that power the reactor and support the nuclear reaction necessary to generate the low-cost, carbonfree electricity that will power 30 per cent of the province through 2064. "Bruce Power is a leader in the world's nuclear industry, and we're proud to be a part of the groundbreaking work that will be completed during the Major Component Replacement Project," Legate said. "Our employees are very proud of the role they play in allowing Bruce
Power's reactors to operate for another four decades." John Yakabuski, MPP for Renfrew-NipissingPembroke, said Nu-Tech is a respected member of both the Arnprior and provincial business communities. "Nu-Tech's reputation for unmatched quality and the unparalleled skill of its workforce - continue to make it the supplier of choice in Ontario's nuclear refurbishment," MPP Yakabuski said. "This contract will ensure that Nu-Tech will continue to supply critical components that will allow Bruce Power to provide reliable electricity for decades to come." Arnprior Mayor David Reid congratulated NuTech Precision Metals on this tremendous announcement. "Nu-Tech plays a vital role in Bruce Power's Major Component Replacement Project and we are extremely proud that they are part of the Arnprior community," Mayor Reid said. Happy Royal Wedding week
It's a fairy tale of which young girls might dream.Meeting the man of her dreams, falling in love and he not only treats her like a princess but he is a real-life prince charming! On May 19 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be wed at St. George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The pre-game show (or pre-wedding coverage) will start at 4 a.m. on most major North American broadcast networks and the wedding is set to start at 7 a.m. Now what does this all mean for the average Canadian? Let's not forget Canada is a constitutional monarchy and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is Queen of Canada and Canada's Head of State. It is highly unlikely, as sixth in the line of succession, that Prince Harry will ever be crowned the King of England. Let's give the job to his father who has been waiting, patiently for the job for decades, first. Prince Harry still had to seek his Granny's permission to get married and she was kind enough to issue the Instrument of Consent with her signature that was just released on May 13. The role of the Crown in Canada matters, it is more than just ceremonial, it links us to the past and paves a way for our future. The wedding ensures that the British Monarchy will live another day. The big day and the lead up to the nuptials is also sure to be a money-maker with billions of people expected to tune-in worldwide. It is also expected the wedding will be a $500 million boost to the British economy. There will be a ripple effect felt across the pond here as well, as merchandise and souvenirs are popping up. The Royal Canadian Mint is also cashing in on the big day having recently released a $20 silver collector coin (price tag $105) to mark the occasion with the artwork created locally by well-known Westport artist Joel Kimmel. There will be numerous events throughout the area to mark the occasion, including the Royal Wedding Celebration hosted by the Hub Almonte. It starts at 6 a.m. at the Civitan Hall on the big day. In Perth the day will be marked with a high tea at 3 p.m. at Matheson Hall at the Perth Parkside Inn and Spa. And in Arnprior, the party will get started a day early at a Royal Wedding Tea Party at the library starting at 3:30 p.m. All of these local events show that for many in this country, the Royal Wedding matters in Canada. So Pip, pip cheerio, it's time to pour some tea and get a royal fascinator ready.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Township could have afforded donation To the editor: In reference to your May 3 edition and the article Arnprior Airport to upgrade runway. I happen to live in McNab/ Braeside Township and was appalled that the McNab/Braeside council denied a donation of $250 to the airport for upkeep and maintenance. As a retired NAV CANADA official (Canada's Air Traffic Control provider) I have visited the majority of airports in Canada and fully realize the local airport's contribution to the communities in public safety with air ambulances, emergency and military ser-
vices. It is also impossible to deny the positive economic impact airports have on surrounding communities with fixed base operators employment, fuel sales, hangar rentals and business travel. Surely the Township of McNab/Braeside with an audited annual surplus of $698,453.00 can afford a $250 contribution for the welfare of the Arnprior Airport. Makes me wonder what world our councillors live in? George Powell McNab/Braeside

2) Rising interest rates, of which we have had three rate hikes in the last while and there will be more in the coming months, will increase the cost of loans for all, including the government. Adding to concerns, Ontario's auditor general suggests Ontario's debt is higher than the government is claiming. Couple that with the many promises from the Liberals for "care" spending of every "flavour" all surely will raise even further the debt and interest costs. matters that impact them day-in and day-out. Ignore the desperation/ mud-slinging and focus on the track record of our present government. Of primary concern, from our perspective, is the province's debt, $312 billion, the largest debt in the world of any subnational government. The interest alone on this $312 billion is $1 billion per month or over $12 billion per year. This Ontario debt and the interest on the debt are both going to rise for two (maybe more) reasons: 1) Moody's Credit Rating Agency has just this week downgraded Ontario's credit rating from "stable" to "negative." So borrowing by the government will cost more increasing the debt and the interest costs;

for LaValley, and while serving on various hospital and health boards she saw firsthand how devastating previous governments' cuts to health care have been for everyday families. "Under Kathleen Wynne's Liberals, life is getting harder for Ontarians and for all my neighbours in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. People are waiting hours at hospitals, only to be treated in emergency room hallways, schools are crumbling and being threatened with closure, and far too many seniors are getting substandard care." "Doug Ford's conservative agenda of more cuts is the last thing our health-care system needs. The last conservative government fired 6,000 nurses, closed 28 hospitals and slashed over 7,000 hospital beds. More cuts are the last thing that health care needs." "We need change, but I reject Doug Ford and the Conservatives' agenda of more cuts and privatization. On May 9, the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke NDP riding association elected Ethel LaValley, longtime reeve, mayor and labour activist, to be their candidate. "After decades of going back and forth between the Liberals and Conservatives, life just keeps getting harder for people in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, and everywhere else in this province," LaValley said. "I'm running on a message of hope, because only the Ontario NDP can be a change for the better." Point Pelee attracts birds and their admirers
Michael Runtz focuses on the spring return of songbirds
One of the most exciting aspects of spring is the return of songbirds. Many of our feathered neighbours fly back here from Central and South America where they spent winter. Travelling hundreds of kilometres on favourable nights, they leapfrog their way across the United States back to our region. Many visit us for only a day or two before
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column continuing their journey north. Others stay and nest. While numerous warblers and other songbirds visit our area during spring migration, certain parts of Ontario offer even better opportunities to view even
larger numbers of these feathered jewels. Especially good are points of land jutting out into large bodies of water. After migrating songbirds cross large bodies of water such as the Great Lakes, by dawn they are ready to land to rest and refuel, and protruding points of land are the first they see. Of all the larger ones in Lake Erie, Point Pelee is the most famous for its migration of birds. Currently I am at Point Pelee National Park looking at birds. For those who've never been here, Pelee it is the southernmost
part of mainland Canada. Its tip, in recent years much abbreviated because of lack of sand deposition, is situated south of the 42nd parallel, which runs through northern California and Barcelona. You cannot drive to the tip but a multicar shuttle brings you there. During the birding season, the shuttle starts running at 6 a.m. When it leaves the visitor centre at that early time, it is filled to the brim with eager birders. Today I caught the early shuttle but when I arrived at the tip a crowd was al-
ready present. Apparently there were so many birders waiting before six the first shuttle left early. After exchanging hellos with the people I knew from my many years visiting and working at Point Pelee, I got down to the serious business of looking for birds. It didn't take long to find them. Flocks of Baltimore orioles were flying south off the tip, as were blackbirds, kingbirds, tanagers, and many others. They flew south, not north, because these birds overshot their destination and were heading back to where they felt
they should be, a phenomenon known as reverse migration. After flying out over the lake, they would swing back to the point only to fly back out. As if having flocks of colourful birds circle overhead was not enough, two American white pelicans slowly flew past the point, raising everyone's excitement to a new level. Most birds stay at Pelee, however, some to nest and others to fatten up before continuing their journey north. On my first day in l See THOUSANDS, page 11

Thousands flock to enjoy spectacle of migrating birds l Continued from page 10
Pelee, I encountered about 90 species including many warblers, those colourful jewels of the bird world. The day offered good looks at birds such as Kentucky, blue-winged, cerulean, and hooded warblers, southern species that rarely make it up to our area. Every May thousands of people flock to Pelee to enjoy the spectacle of migrating birds. On "slow" days, however, the birders seem
to outnumber the birds. Fortunately, at least for my first day at Pelee, that was not the case! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca – Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature, and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

Waste, according to my sister Audrey was a word mother thought was right up there with swearing. Nothing was wasted in our house! Audrey said that is why the gallon of bright green paint mother bought at Scott's Hardware in Renfrew to give the pump its usual spring cleanup, would be used until there wasn't a drop left in the can it came in. First of course, was the pump. Then with a lot of paint left over, the privy door was next. Father said he never heard of anything as crazy as painting a privy door with the whole thing hidden in a cluster of cedar trees behind the summer kitchen. Mother paid him no heed, so there was the privy door, a bright green, with the rest of the little building faded and as drab as a cow plop! Two old kitchen chairs on the back stoop, which were solid pine, were now bright green. Audrey said it had enough paint on it to stand up on its own! Mother thought the old swing in the grape arbour could stand a touching up. It was made of wood, and mother tackled it like someone possessed, leaving the seats to the last. It took her the better part of a day to turn the faded wood to green. Of course, none of us were too happy about the swing getting a coat of paint. It took ages to dry, and that meant none of us could use it, which didn't please my brothers one bit. They liked

nothing better than two of them to sit opposite each other and pump furiously until the old swing was fair lifting off the ground. But mother managed to use up most of the paint, and all that was left was a little dribble in the bottom of the can. She stood in the middle of the yard, looking around her to see what she could dab up. Father had backed the old Model T out of the garage ... only three of the fenders matched, and he could see mother looking at the odd one father had picked up at Thacker's Garage in Renfrew when we lost one in a ditch on the way in to town one day. Father could read
mother like a book. He knew what she was thinking. Well, before you could say "Jack Robinson" he was behind the wheel and out the gate and onto the lane and yelled, "have to get some nails at Briscoe's General Store." We never knew if mother thought she could use up the last of the paint on the fender. But she settled for painting the two poles that held up the clothesline. Audrey said she would bet her last dollar we were the only ones in the entire County of Renfrew with bright green clothesline poles. Emerson said he was mighty glad the privy was hidden behind a cluster of cedar trees. The swing never
did look like the rest of the targets mother attacked with the paint brush ... the old boards soaked up the paint like a sponge, but at least it took the last bit out of the can. Mother hadn't wasted a drop. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? There was nothing to waste during the Depression years
thank you! Thanks to the generous donation of materials and time by two local contractors, the Miller Group and Antrim Contracting, and in cooperation with the arnprior airport Commission, the Arnprior Fish and Game Conservation Club recently completed upgrades to an expanded parking area at the Baskin Road South boat ramp. The club initiated the boat ramp project in 1983 and with several improvements over the years the facility has offered water access to several generation of boaters in the area on the head-pond and up to the dam at Stewartville.

OPP preparing for growing opioid crisis
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Southern Renfrew county OPP are preparing for an escalation in the opioid crisis with a communication strategy session. Police want to know that their messaging both in emergency circumstances and education programs - is trusted and reaches the right people. They called together area media outlets, along with health officials and first responders on May 1, to establish
partnerships. Area newspapers and radio stations attended, along with representatives from the county health unit, paramedics and officers from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, among others. Opioid-related deaths are mounting in Renfrew county. A seven per cent increase in the first quarter of this year meaning of 28 opioid-related seizures, two died. Last August, a 24-yearold male accidentally overdosed on fentanyl in
Renfrew. Five of 63 drug seizures involved opioids. The year before it was two of 47. That year, 2016, saw 2,816 opioid-related deaths in Canada. And while the stereotype is of young people, almost 30 per cent of those were people in their 30s. "This is about gaining the community's confidence and trust so that when the crisis comes, people will believe what we say," said meeting chair Bryan MacKillop. "It's all lost if we can't communicate with the
people who need it most." OPP is addressing the opioid crisis in several ways - equipping every officer with overdose-recovery Naloxone spray, among them. Community Street Crime Unit started last year. Presentations were made this year to teachers and high school students about the dangers of addiction, and drug and opioid abuse. A multi-partner community-safety well-being plan is at the fledgling stage in Renfrew county.

OPP officers Colin Slight and Bryan MacKillop host a communication strategy session with southern Renfrew county media and health officials. The opioid crisis has gripped the province and is also felt in this region. Authorities want to cooperate on particular emergencies and educational programs.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It was a party 100 years in the making. On Friday, May 4 friends and family of Emilie Miller gathered to welcome her into the centenarian club. Miller marked her 100th birthday at Island View Retirement Residence, where she has been a resident since 2005. "We want to congratulate and welcome Emilie into the centenarian club," said Luke Goulette, general manager. "From all of the staff, we really enjoy your smile everyday and thank you for sharing this day with us." Arnprior Mayor David Reid was also on hand to wish Miller a very happy birthday and present her with a certificate from the town. "May 4, 1918 was a very special day! On behalf of
the members of council and the residents of the Town of Arnprior, it is my pleasure to offer you best wishes on the occasion of your 100th birthday," reads the note. The downstairs activity room was filled with supporters listening to a number of speeches honouring her and many agreed she did not look near 100 years old. The secret to her long life? A glass of red wine and ice cream everyday! "I don't feel 100 years old," said Miller who was born in Vanier and moved to Arnprior to be closer to family. "I never thought about my age so maybe that helped!" Miller was married to her husband of 59 years, Leo Miller who passed away in 1999 and had one son, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

His dream was to own a farm in Canada, the land of opportunity, freedom and fresh air. Frank worked in the fledgling aircraft industry in Canada contributing to the Avro Arrow project. But within a dozen years he had realized the dream and moved with a family that had grown to 3 sons onto the farm on Mount St. Patrick Road. A fourth son was born while there. Through many years Hilary and Frank and the boys raised beef cows and chickens and also managed extensive gardens of fruit and vegetables as they lived a pastoral life. Firewood and snow removal were hard work but the activities were also cherished as part of everyday life. Throughout it all Frank and the whole family used large doses of humour. Eventually the country life became too difficult and Frank and Hilary moved into a small house in Renfrew that overlooked a park used by laughing children and neighbours walking dogs. At Frank’s request, cremation will take place. Donations in his memory may be made to the Sunshine Coach or the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.gouletfuneralhome.com

Winkovics, Robert
Roberts’ (Bob) life stood still on October 19th, 2017 at 6 A.M. I held his face in my hands, looked into those marvelous blue eyes and whispered I Love You, he closed his eyes and opened them again and looked into my eyes until his Spirit left this wonderful earth that we had shared. Life without him is very difficult, we miss his loving smile, his caring hands, his love of nature, his artistic flair in his paintings, the homes that we have constructed and his love of creating a beautiful campground for all to enjoy. Thank you so much for your kind support, hearing treasured memories from so many of you gives us the pleasure of celebrating his life on Saturday May 19, 2018 at BonaVista Campground Recreation hall between the hours of 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. We will be planting a Red Oak some time in the spring in Bobs’ Memory.
It feels like only yesterday “I’ll see you soon,” I heard you say... That moment never did arrive... A phone call saying you are barely alive... We mourned, we grieved, we carried on... It’s been 15 years of staying strong... Think of you every day...
Marion Kelly

Kids' event to support Camp Wanago Little Johnny has asked his parents if he can go to camp like his friend Billy. His parents struggle with how to respond. The answer is difficult for a child to understand and sadly painful for the parents to relay. We, as a community, can help that child and others like little Johnny with your support to our "Send a Kid to Camp Fun Day" so that they too can play, learn and grow together. This event is being hosted by Emmanuel Anglican Church Arnprior,
287 Harrington St. on Saturday, May 26 from 3 to 6 p.m.There will be lots of fun activities for the young and young at heart, bouncy castle, lawn games, face painting, clown and balloons, treasure hunt and a funny photo booth. Stop in and have a pulled pork sandwich plate or hot dogs for the kids plus dessert. Let's get together for a fun day. Admission is a free will cash donation. Part of the proceeds go to sponsoring children in the community to go to Camp Wanago this summer.
Arts group hosts 'Buy a seat' For decades the CEC on John Street in Arnprior has hosted cultural events, theatre, dinners, exercise classes and much more! In May of 2017, the Central Ottawa Valley Arts Collective (COVAC) was incorporated. COVAC's objective is to encourage involvement in a broad range of creative arts and culture through the development and maintenance of arts facilities and the management of their use via a coalition of representatives rooted in theatre, music, dance and visual arts. A major goal of COVAC is to install raked seating in the hall. The raked seating will be designed to collapse and will provide a greater visibility for patrons at a play or concert.
A town hall session is planned for Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. COVAC welcomes the public to come out and listen to a panel of speakers discuss how similar cultural centres and theatres have benefitted other small towns like Smith Falls, Perth and Carleton Place. COVAC will be kicking off their major fundraising campaign whereby businesses and individuals can "buy a seat". There will be different donor levels and tax receipts will be issued. Please come out to the CEC at 257 John St., Arnprior and share in the excitement of this new project. A reception with refreshments will follow. For more information call 613864-6910.

sudoku
THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, soon you will be able to clarify your thinking and articulate your needs to others. Until then, you need to wait for an opportunity to share your point of view.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Distant lands may be calling you, Leo. So be sure your passport is in order and set up those discount fare alerts to your email. It’s time to get away for some R&R.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Devote more time to self-care right now, Sagittarius. You may need some time to yourself to recharge. When you are done, you can once again be a person of action.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, if you have been struggling with a challenging situation, you’ll get some much-needed support this week. Use the break to treat yourself to something special.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, be careful what you wish for, as you may just get everything you desire. It’s uncertain how things may turn out, so be ready to make changes as needed.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you may be feeling a little wild this week or ready to just hang around in your pajamas and relax. Either way works as long as you’re happy doing it.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Some epic action may be on tap for you this week, Gemini. You may have to slow things down if everything is moving too quickly. A lively group of people will join you.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Is love in the air, Libra? If you are feeling more amorous than usual, you may be ready for a new relationship or ready to add some spice to your current one.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Your powers of persuasion are dialed up, Aquarius. You can convince others of just about anything you want them to do right now. Use this skill wisely.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, a surge of energy may have you working overtime to complete a task. Just come up for a breather once in a while. Such respites can prove rejuvenating.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Health, wisdom and wealth could be in your sights, Scorpio. Why not throw in being well-liked as well? This is your time to soar. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a love of fine things could find you in financial peril if you are not careful with spending. Set limits on how much you treat yourself.
