They mostly stuck to party messaging that reinforces speaking points echoed by candidates across the province. However, when asked to name one area where they differ from their party PC candidate John Yakabuski, NDP Ethel LaValley, and Liberal Jackie Agnew seemed a bit caught off guard. "That's a tough one," Agnew said. "Here's what I'll say. There's a lot of talk about deficits, and it bothers me too, but when I got to thinking about it - we need to inl See CANDIDATES, page 3

Election candidates advance public sector job growth

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Growing the public sector is the best way to reduce poverty in Renfrew county, say two of three main candidates in Election Ontario 2018. PC John Yakabuski, NDP Ethel LaValley, and Liberal Jackie Agnew were asked their opinions on poverty-related issues such affordable housing, seniors care, and child care. Renfrew is among the poorest regions in Ontario. LaValley said having government oversee sectors such as child care and home care would mean good-paying jobs with ben-

efits for workers. Along with teachers and police and other public sector employees, their spending power boosts the private sector, she indicated. Agnew agrees, but added the Liberal government is also growing private sector jobs. Tourism shows promise. "I'm impressed with the local job situation," Agnew said. "Four new businesses in Renfrew last week; a call centre in Pembroke has 15 job postings; so there are jobs being created." Yakabuski, RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke incumbent, said corporate tax cuts and halting the minimum wage increase at

$14 would stimulate job growth. He sees room for local growth in light manufacturing, and that small businesses like convenience stores would benefit from expanding the sale of beer and wine. "Government's job is to create the environment for small business to grow," he said. "We grow business by reducing taxes and red tape." If the PCs ended rent control, Agnew said, it would be devastating for tenants. She also listed several investments that benefited low-income citizens, along with retrofit money for small businesses.

"Poverty is an issue near and dear to my heart. I see poverty every day," Agnew said. "We've put more money in housing and homelessness in Renfrew county than any other party in the past." Yakabuski said affordable housing for seniors "has to be a priority." He is proud to have worked with the government to bring 36 new long-term beds to Arnprior. "We accomplished something that's never been done before, bring beds from another area to here," he said. "So I think I've been an effective MPP for the past 15 years." There are 400 families

Check out our range of social media channels serving up content from insideottawavalley.com on a waiting list for 19 units, LaValley said, meaning some families will never see affordable housing. More must be built, she added. And more needs to be invested in home-care. On child care, Yakabuski said the PCs have the only "realistic plan." His party would provide parents with almost $7,000 per child to use as they see fit, including family members. The other parties will only approve licensed daycare spaces.

"As your income rises the subsidy reduces," Yakabuski said. "There will never be enough licensed spaces in a place as large as Renfrew county." Agnew said the PCs are not dedicating enough funds to child care. Daycare will be free for preschool children as part of $2.2-billion investment in the system. LaValley said it is crucial to get parents back into the workforce. The NDP promises $12-a-day child care.

vest in health care, in infrastructure. The more I looked into it, the more I saw we needed to make choices. We can't just cut, cut, cut." LaValley genuinely struggled; she said she is running because the party platform is so attractive to her. "I'm really stumped," she said. "I believe that Andrea Horwath and the NDP have put together a strategy and plan to put this province on the right track; 99 per cent of the answers are right there." The incumbent Yakabuski said he wouldn't be providing "personal opinions" because that's not how elections work. Yet when it came to the question of a difference from his party, pointed to a track record of free votes in the legislature, some of which have converted colleagues. "I can't say that I counter the party, but people know me," he said. "And they know I stand up for the people in my community." On energy costs, one of the more explosive topics of the cam-

paign, LaValley said her party is the only one with a plan to get Ontario out of "the fiasco." Hydro One must return to public hands. She opposes recent executive-compensation boosts, and wants to end costly peak use times. LaValley inserted her leader's name far more frequently than other candidates did. Yakabuski, the former energy critic, spent much of his time decrying the Liberal track record. Premier Kathleen Wynne's government drove up costs 300 per cent through lucrative contracts in the Green Energy Act. He wants an investigation to see if terms can be reduced. "During my time as energy critic I saw the Liberals destroy the energy system," he said. Agnew said her party "inherited" problems with the energy file, but that now the Fair Hydro Plan has reduced costs by 25 per cent. Home energy audits and other programs have helped defray costs further. On the environment, Yakabuski takes issue with the perception

Candidates/submitted

John Yakabuski, left, Jackie Agnew, and Ethel LaValley agree with almost everything their respective party is putting forward in this campaign. Yet at least some voters want to know the person they are voting for can think for themselves. that PCs are lagging behind. His party introduced Lands For Life, now called the Living Legacy Land Use Strategy. Provincial parks and the blue box system are also part of the PC legacy. But there will not be a "carbon tax tax-grab" on his leader Doug Ford's watch. "We're not going to shift rice on a plate or give $400 million to California to offset carbon," he said. LaValley, who worked in the ministry of natural resources, said the environment ministry is "virtually non-existent" because of cuts. She wants to see big business forced to recycle because "our world is in trouble. "Each and everyone of us have to play a part."

Agnew declared that climate change is occurring. And that the answer is not to "pave over the (GTA) greenbelt." When it comes to taxes, LaValley again pointed to the party having a plan that will offer hope for the future, along with programs and services. Agnew said taxes are in a good place for people. To keep roads in good shape and pay for services, "our taxes are at the rate we can afford." Yakabuski said reducing taxes for the middle class stimulates consumer spending. Anyone with an income below $32,000 will pay no tax under a PC government, he added.

from Carleton University and a seasoned project manager, Anna believes the Green party's values of being fiscally responsible, socially progressive, and environmentally focused will contribute enormously to sustaining that natural beauty as well as the livelihoods and quality of life of all in this community. After all, we have only one planet; there are no viable options. We need to keep this planet clean, safe and sustainable. Anna has volunteered in the community to assist professional newcomers (architects and engineers) fleeing countries so unlike ours that we cannot imagine, in integrating and finding work in their new home. This has given Anna an appreciation of the opportunities that make us such a rich country not only economically but in democratic rights. Anna believes that we have "won the lottery of life" being in Ontario and Canada, but that does not last without an awareness that it cannot be taken for granted. Our democracy dies a little bit every time we allow silence to replace reasoned thought. The Green party position of no whipped votes is one side of securing that democracy. Anna is married and has two adult daughters, both living and working in Ottawa. Her husband Peter is also a retired architect and wholeheartedly supports her in this initiative. She loves the outdoors, hiking, swimming, canoeing, cross country skiing and painting. Submitted by Anna Dolan

Mary Poppins is coming to town Mary Poppins, the world's favourite Victorian nanny, is coming to Arnprior to visit the Banks family at No. 17 Cherry Street Lane! But will she stay for long? After all, nannies come and go at a rapid rate at the Banks home, mostly due to young Michael and Jane, the Banks children, behaving like little "savages" (well, at least that's what their own father says!) Two Rivers Musical Productions, Arnprior's own

community musical theatre group, presents the Broadway musical production of Mary Poppins for all ages to enjoy. Four performances will be presented at Arnprior District High School: May 31, June 1, June 2 at 7 p.m., and June 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under, and are available online from www.tworiversmusicals.ca. Enhanced beyond the original Mary Poppins mov-

ie, this version includes familiar songs such as "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Feed the Birds" and "Chim Cheree," along with new songs and new characters that will delight and amuse you. There's the father's former nanny, Miss Andrew, who brings her nasty remedy Brimstone and Treacle to discipline the children, much to their annoyance. As well, the new song "Anything Can Happen" will have you humming as you leave the theatre. We guarantee that your time with us will be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - and we'll even spell it out for you!

Just vote Anyone who watched just five minutes of the last leaders debate of the Ontario provincial election on Sunday night may be fighting with the question: Why vote? These so-called leaders kept interrupting each other, throwing digs, ignoring the moderators; it gives little hope any of them can lead the province after the June 7 election, if this is how they choose to treat each other on national television. But that is what any eligible voter is asked to do: just vote. Voter apathy is not easy to understand for those who have always seen it as their civic duty. Yet those who refuse to vote have a few reasons that deserve to be addressed directly. Because it is clear that everyone benefits when all voters in a democracy cast a ballot. 'I never vote,' is a line often heard at times such as this, during a provincial election campaign. 'I'm not political and don't know how it works or where to go; so I just don't bother.' A more difficult one goes like this: 'I don't think the party I like can win in this riding so what's the point?' And the toughest one to get around is: 'I don't like any of the candidates. I prefer to protest by spoiling my ballot.' But vote you must. In the 2014 election just over 50 per cent of Ontario's 9.2 million eligible voters cast a ballot and in 2011 48.2 per cent voted. That slight increase still means only half the province voted. You may think you are not political but every action you take or don't take affects politics. The new developments in hospitals and highways were funded by the provincial government, every time you walk into the hospital you are reaping the benefits of provincial funding. The expansion, if and when it happens, of Hwy. 17, which is always a hot-button issue, will be decided by the party of power in Toronto. Think about that the next time you go for a drive. If you don't think your favourite party is going to win, still vote for them as the party receives a quarterly rate by the number of valid votes a party's candidates receives in the general election: your vote matters. Last week, the prime minister recognized the 100th anniversary of women's rights to vote federally, in Ontario women were granted the vote in 1917. Men and women died in war for our right to vote. After all of these sacrifices and battles it proves you must vote. And as we all know no candidate in the history of democracy has been perfect. Be educated, it is easy to look up how and where to vote; www.elections.on.ca or call 1-888-668-8683. Election day is June 7, vote, it matters.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • The dragons are back To the editor: I know, I know, it's that time of year and I'm all excited about this year's Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival. Did I tell you that this year's festival will be a national qualifier? Arnprior was selected by Dragon Boat Canada to host this particular event to help qualify some of the fastest crews in this country. Well folks, it's absolutely true and we are so proud and honoured to have graciously accepted their invitation. Thank you so much Town of Arnprior for your generosity and support, this would not have happened without your vision and the power of sport in our com-

munity. So, Chinese culture, sport, food, entertainment, and natural wonders come together at this year's festival at Robert Simpson Park July 21. Oh, I should tell you that the sights and sounds will be similar to last year's, the roars of dragons as they undulate through the crowds, the beating of drums, the gasps of paddlers as they propel themselves to the finish line, interrupted by the drummers yelling for more power and keeping in stroke, along with the sights and sounds from spectators lining the shore along the majestic Madawaska and Ottawa rivers. So, now that I have your attention, let me digress and say something about the power of sport. I have

Sports in society can even influence our understanding of gender roles and socio-economic issues, and they can help frame city, town and national identity. In fact folks, sports in society are so vital that the UN has declared them a human right. Well, Arnprior has certainly embraced its role in this regard and we should all be quite delighted. So, until we meet again, join us where the two rivers meet for a full day races, food to die for, and the best entertainment ever. The world's fastest growing water sport is another reason to get outside and enjoy the sights and attractions. We are also looking for additional community team entries, so give us a call and get your crews all lined up. Darrel O'Shaughnessy

not been here as long as most of you, but to me, sport is an important part of our community in the greater Arnprior region. We are known, even to the outside world as a sports hub. We are renowned for our hockey, broomball, curling, ringette, baseball, golf and snowboarding activities, swimming and lawn bowling, and, yes, even dragon boating. Anyway, I just want to say that athletic endeavours, both amateur and professional, have a tremendous economic, political and cultural influence on our society. Watching and playing sports provide ways to escape the stress of our lives and come together as a community. Hosting sporting events can boost tourism and revenue for a city or town or a region.

high as Chernobyl but right up there with Elliot Lake, Ont. and Whiteshell, Man. Other than Cheryl Gallant and Walter Stack I am having a hard time finding anyone who thinks this is a good idea. If Reeve Stack is searching for a campaign theme, I suggest lower taxes would be more popular with the voters than supporting more nuclear waste. George Powell, Arnprior

To the editor: NIMBY, please. Reference your May 17 article on Reeve Walter Stack defending the nuclear waste disposal plan site plan; surely this can't be good news for us. Radioactive waste has been in temporary storage at Chalk River since the mid-1950s and now this detailed proposal is to bury it in a huge mound similar to a city garbage dump. The Near Surface Disposal Facility would operate from 2020 until about 2070, it would be a heap 18 metres high, covering 16 hectares and designed to last 500 years. It would contain up to one million cubic metres, mostly lowlevel but some medium level waste, you know glow-in-thedark type stuff. It's no secret that the Chalk River facility is the oldest nuclear works in the world (1949) and had the world's first recorded accident in the early 1950s. Valley residents already have a higher than normal cancer rate, not quite as

Trump has. But both figures share striking similarities: a proud lack of knowledge on the finer details of public policy, an ethos of alphamale dominance, a privileged upbringing under business elite fathers, an ironic claim to represent working class interests despite that upbringing, put-

downs of female reporters, and lack of experience with the branch of government that they intend to lead. What a shame it is that the PCs do not have a leader with a temperament more like MPP John Yakabuski, who upon his re-election would necessarily be bound to embarrassing solidarity with

Ford's would-be chaotic Premiership. Voters who want Trumpstyle politics kept out of Ontario must necessarily vote against the PCs, or else make clear to Mr. Yakabuski that they are voting for him personally, not for another Torontonian business elite. Stefan Klietsch, Renfrew

Near Ottawa River is no place to store radioactive waste

Don't allow Trumpism To the editor: At the time of writing, the Progressive Conservatives and Doug Ford appear to be on fire: a 1000strong showing for their campaign launch at the Renfrew Armouries, and a commanding lead in the polls. The victory of a Donald Trump doppelganger appears to be imminently at our doorsteps. Mind you, Doug Ford is neither identical to nor as bad as Donald Trump. Ford is not accused of, let alone having ever admitted to, groping young women. Nor has Ford whipped up racial or antiimmigrant sentiments like

Unlike many others, these birds view tent caterpillars as tasty treats, columnist writes Even though our species evolved from early hominoids that devoured haircovered animals, we abhor the feeling of hair in the mouth. Many wild creatures seem to share that repulsion, and in nature there is a cornucopia of hairy caterpillars that generally go uneaten. Although a few caterpillars, including those of the Io moth, bear poison spines that burn on contact, most, such as those of gypsy, dagger and tussock moths, gain protection simply from being covered in an abundance of hairs. Eastern tent caterpillars are an excellent example. These hairy caterpillars build highly visible silk tents in the forks of branches of cherry trees. The tents are their refuge when they are not out dining on leaves. As time passes, the caterpillars strip the trees of their leaves and enlarge their tents to accommodate their increase in size. Most birds avoid eating eastern tent caterpillars be-

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column cause of their hairs. But nature seems to abhor generalizations, and there are exceptions to almost every rule. In fact, there are a few birds that not only eat haircovered caterpillars but also thrive on them. Those birds are the cuckoos, and two species - the black-billed and the yellow-billed - live in Ontario. Although yellow-billed cuckoos occasionally make it as far north as the Ottawa Valley, the black-billed cuckoo regularly nests here. Even though they are relatively common, black-billed cuckoos are shy, secretive birds, and their soft, rapidly repeated "cu-cu-cu-cu" calls are more commonly heard than the birds are seen. Both cuckoo species are elongated birds with greybrown backs and white bellies, and sport long tails and a strong, down-curved bill. Yellow-billed cuckoos differ from black-billeds, in having large white spots on their tail feathers and rufous patches on their wings. And as their names suggest,

Michael Runtz/Metroland

A Yellow-billed Cuckoo gobbles up a tasty tent caterpillar. the bill colour is quite different between the two species. This appears to be a good year for eastern tent caterpillars; their highly visible tents are popping up everywhere. This means it should be a good year for the cuckoos. As if a large crop of caterpillars had been anticipated this year, both cuckoo species appeared in Point Pelee relatively early in the migration period this May. Recently I was on a morning property walk when I noticed movement in a small choke cherry. I raised my binoculars and was delighted to see a yellow-billed cuckoo sitting on a branch between two caterpillar tents. It leaned to one side and slowly and deliberately picked a caterpillar from the outside of its tent. It appeared to be in no hurry, and after eventually swallowing the caterpillar, it casually repeated the process several more times.

So why do cuckoos dine on hairy caterpillars when most birds don't? The reason is cuckoos have a most unusual way of dealing with hairs and spines. These defensive structures end up stuck in the lining of a cuckoo's stomach, eventually coating it with "fur." When the hair coat starts interfering with digestion, the entire stomach lining is sloughed off and gets regurgitated as a pellet. It obviously takes a lot of guts to eat meals covered in hair! Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital The Grove Nursing Home Primary Health Care Centre Community Services

FROM YOUR

ARNPRIOR REGIONAL HEALTH

Working together for a healthy community Everyday at Arnprior Regional Health we live our vision: “Together, we create a healthy community”. Here are just some examples of exactly how working together, both inside ARH and with outside partners, supports high-quality, compassionate care for residents of Arnprior and surrounding areas.

Working together to prevent outbreaks

Working together with community partners

All staff and physicians have a role to play in preventing and containing outbreaks. With coordinated efforts from all involved, neither the Grove Nursing Home nor the hospital experienced any outbreaks over the winter. We asked several teams to share how they contributed to this outstanding achievement:

The Arnprior and Area Rural Health Hub brings multiple agencies and organizations together to address service needs identified by the community and to explore approaches to providing care in the most efficient way possible. Last year, we began to focus on finding out what members of the community identified as new services needed for patients with COPD or diabetes. Two of our local pharmacies have been active participants in this collaborative effort. Pharmacist owners Sam Boulavong from Clancy’s Drug Store, and Stan Tsykov from Shopper’s Drug Mart, have been regular participants, addressing various needs that they have seen in the community. As the Health Hub evolves, ARH is working with the Arnprior & District Family Health Team, McNab/Braeside Seniors at Home and the Renfrew County & District Health Unit to explore a more formal arrangement moving forward.

Infection Prevention & Control: a substantial increase in the number of staff who received the flu vaccine; implementation of an active surveillance process at the Grove where at the first sign of infection in a resident, a notification was forwarded to the Infection Control Coordinator for immediate action; improved precaution signs and placement of very visible stop signs at entry point of precaution rooms The Grove: robust hand hygiene including before and after meals; staff not coming to work sick; a focus on awareness for families to not visit residents if they’re ill Food Services: practicing enhanced cleaning of high-touch surfaces (e.g., chair arms, rails) whenever there was more than one isolation tray; reporting concerning symptoms observed during meal service to the nursing staff Environmental Services: updated the cleaning policy for shared equipment (blood pressure cuffs, IV poles etc.); increased use and frequency of sporicidal cleaning processes

Working together for active seniors ARH, along with the Town of Arnprior and the Township of McNab/ Braeside, submitted an application to the provincial government late last year to fund a Seniors Active Living Centre. The application was accompanied by letters of support from the Arnprior & District Family Health Team, the Greater Arnprior Seniors Council and the Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program. Last month, we found out our application was successful. Affordable, accessible programming specifically designed to encourage activity, expand social opportunities and increase overall well-being will be the focus of the Greater Arnprior Region Seniors Active Living Centre, which will be run out of both Arnpior and McNab-Braeside, eventually being located at the Rural Seniors Village that is being planned in conjunction with the redevelopment of the Grove. In response to concerns raised by the community during the consultation phase, the Centre will support, coordinate and provide transportation at a low cost as well as provide many no- and lowcost activities.

The Arnprior District High School girls' soccer team won the Renfrew county championship with a remarkable performance in yesterday's playoff tournament. The day started with a lopsided win over Fellowes. The girls were in stellar form, jumping out to a first half lead on goals by Tristah Morash, Lexi Majaury, and Miranda Robinson. The team's depth shone through in the second half, as every player in the lineup hit the field and helped preserve the shutout in what was a great team effort. The rest that was earned in this game would prove pivotal to success later on in what turned out to be an exhausting day. The next game was a hard-fought 2-1 win against Bishop Smith. The girls once again jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Tristah Morash, but despite dominating possession and chances all first half, saw the lead disappear late when Bishop's capitalized on a breakdown and tied the game. After a series of missed chances in the second half, Amelia Veale took the

game in her hands, when she won the ball, beat a defender, and placed a perfectly timed shot in the top left corner to claim the lead. The team held tight on defence and clinched the AA division title, a spot at EOSSAA, and a place in the finals against Valour with the win. The final game was a true test of the team's will, as the girls were given one hour to rest before they faced a very strong team from Valour High School, who carried a perfect 9-0 record into the match. The Rapids came out strong as Lexi Majaury got them out to another early lead after a brilliant solo effort to win the ball, and got her second goal of the day. Despite carrying the play, the girls' lead was lost when Valour scored off a corner kick seconds before the first half ended. The teams traded chances in the second half, but neither managed to score, so the game went to sudden death extra time.

l MORE

Despite the brutal heat, the girls found an extra gear to claim the win. With two minutes left before the game was slated to go to penalty kicks, Lexi Majaury received a pass on the right wing from Amelia Veale, advanced the ball into the opposing team's penalty box, and cut a perfect pass back to Tristah Morash, who sailed a shot over the Valour keeper to win the game and the championship. Every player on the roster should be proud of what the team accomplished yesterday. The team showed incredible grit, focus, positivity, teamwork, and sportsmanship on what was a challenging and gruelling day for everyone. You represented our school and our soccer program with class both on and off the field. The team will travel to Kingston, where they will look to take home their first ever Eastern Ontario championship on Wednesday, May 30.

KAREN RUNTZ kruntz@xplornet.com University of Ottawa professor and ratsnake scientist Gabriel Blouin-Demers came this close to having a six-and-a-half-foot-long reptile named after him. While "Gabe" was never a scientific name bound for the reptiles and amphibians of North America, it was all the same a fitting exercise for the Friends of Murphys Point Park - a nod to the research Blouin-Demers conducted locally on ratsnake thermoregulation, how these endangered* reptiles adjust their body temperature to function properly. A captive and nameless grey ratsnake at the park's visitor centre had been educating and delighting visitors for years until 2012, when the Friends combined the naming with fundraising toward ratsnake conservation, monitoring, and education efforts in the park, one of the last protected areas for ratsnakes in Ontario. In the final vote, Gabe lost out to Mica, known to be "shiny and black and found on our forest floors." Dr. Blouin-Demers will undoubtedly mention ratsnakes during the Macnamara Club meeting on June 5, where he is the guest speaker, presenting "The Conservation Biology of Reptiles in Ontario." His presentation will answer the following questions: What is a reptile? What are the turtles, snakes, and

lizards of Ontario? What is their conservation status? What are the main threats facing reptile populations? How can we help conserve reptile populations? Did you know, for instance, that reptiles are the most threatened vertebrates in Canada? Ontario Nature recently noted the designation this April 2018 of the midland painted turtles as special concern, all of Ontario's eight turtle species are now at risk of disappearing from the province. How to learn more An expert in animal habitat selection, Blouin-Demers has published more than 30 scientific papers since 2000 on the ecology of Canadian reptiles. He's also a great teacher, singled out in 2010 by the University of Ottawa for an Excellence in Education award. Check out his herpetology lab page on the University of Ottawa

website at http://mysite.science.uottawa.ca/gblouin, where you'll also find his research in pictures and videos covering some 20 years of field work in Ontario and Quebec, as well as internationally. As noted he "integrates laboratory experiments with field observations to better understand how phenotypes or biological traits - especially behavioural - are set by reptiles' physiologies." A few of the "nearby" studies: • Northern map turtles at Lake Opinicon (100 km south of Ottawa). He implanted thermometers into the abdomen of juvenile turtles to continuously monitor their body temperature for two years. • Also at Lake Opinicon (which has a commercial fishery), a joint U of Ottawa/ Carleton U study to evaluate the bycatch mortality on

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, allow time for others to process a big announcement you recently made. Patience is something you will need this week. Viewing things from others’ points of view will help. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Very little that is holding you back this week, Taurus. You realize you can do anything that you set your mind to. Use this power wisely in the next few days.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
