Darcy Wilson and his son Dominic lost everything in a fire that gutted their apartment on June 12. About 20 people were displaced by the blaze, which started when an unattended pot of oil erupted in flames.
Tenants piece lives together after fire DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Among those left homeless following a recent apartment fire are a single dad and son who lost
everything. Darcy Wilson and three-yearold Dominic, along with about 20 others, were at a hotel for days on end after fire claimed their building at 160 First Ave. on June 12.
The fire erupted from the stove in Wilson's apartment where his roommate was cooking French fries in a pot of oil. No one was in the apartment at the time. No one was injured in
the blaze. "He went out to the store," said Wilson, who remained angry about the incident on Saturday l See EFFORTS, page 4

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com A future subdivision for about 800 people in Arnprior has changed ownership and pushed back a timeline. The Anas family, longtime owner of PJ's Restaurant on the east end of town, recently sold lands behind their commercial properties to an Ottawa-based realestate developer. T. Anas Holdings had produced a subdivision draft plan that was accepted by the County of Renfrew. But since no work has begun on the site within three years, it was set to expire. The new owners obtain a one-year extension from council at the June 11 regular meeting. "They are very anxious to move forward," said town planner Robin Paquette. "They seem to be motivated to make this happen in the

short term." The new owner Madawaska Regional Inc., a subsidiary of Regional Group, calls itself a "real estate powerhouse" in the Ottawa area dating back to 1958. President and CEO Steve Gordon oversaw the establishment of eQ Homes in 2012. Last year it won a City of Ottawa heritage conservation award and another from Housing Design Awards.
The plan for Arnprior includes: • 148 townhouses; • 20 semi-detached dwellings; • 113 single detached dwellings. The 281 housing units would be along an internal road system with two accesses onto Madawaska Boulevard. Parkland and a stormwater management area is included in the plan.

Arnprior council is backing firefighters who moonlight as volunteers in town. Four local firefighters who work full time at Ottawa Fire Services and another working at Garrison Petawawa Fire Department are known as doublehatters. They, along with others across the province who work in major urban centres but volunteer in small towns where they live, are possible targets of a union trying to grow its base of full-time members. The Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) is charging members with violating its rules for helping in their communities. If found guilty, members could face a $500 monthly penalty and suspension or expulsion

That would cost them their full-time job because only members in good standing are permitted to work in departments where the OPFFA is the union. A video defending double-hatters was presented at the June 11 council meeting by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Rural Ontario Municipal Association. Fire Chief Jeff Crawford is quite familiar with the issue, having been a firefighter in both Ottawa and Kemptville for 15 years. He suggested the union is overreaching. "Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do on my own time outside of the city of Ottawa?" Craw-
ford said. Coun. Tom Burnette is a former fire chief in town. He said the issue has gone on for years. "I think it's disgusting that they dictate to members," Burnette said, adding that some moonlight as carpenters, electricians and more, yet the union says nothing. Crawford agreed, but added that a new PC government under premierdesignate Doug Ford could see a settlement against the union. None at the council meeting spoke against the town's efforts to support double-hatters. Mayor David Reid and chief administrative officer Michael Wildman were absent.

An inquest into the death of a construction worker on Highway 17 near Arnprior will be held in Renfrew this September. Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, regional supervising coroner for East Region, Ottawa office, announced June 8 that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Danniel William Milton. Milton, 42, died on April 25, 2016, when he was hit by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project in on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive. "An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act," says a news release. "The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Milton's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths." The inquest is expected to last three days and to hear from approximately nine witnesses. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 17, at the Renfrew Municipal Building, 127 Raglan St. South. "Dr. Robert Reddoch will preside as inquest coroner and Jeffery Richardson will be counsel to the coroner," the release says.

morning as he revisited the site for the first time. "He had nowhere to stay. He was homeless. So I was letting him stay at my place for a while." Wilson got a text while playing baseball. He rushed back to learn everything he owned was lost, including toys and photos of Dominic. The boy would stay at the apartment on weekends. They are looking for a new place. "Nobody in the building is upset with me. I wasn't there," he said. "But you don't leave grease cooking alone." Krown Rust Control has
taken up their employee's cause, asking for donations on social media sites and through a GoFundMe campaign. Wilson said he has had a "a lot of support" from the community and that a storage unit is provided for anyone donating furniture. He is staying at his girlfriend's for now. "He works hard at this job," said Krown owner Tim Middleton. "It's not an easy job spraying oil all day. So anything people can do is very much appreciated." Another GoFundMe campaign is for a woman who lived upstairs for 20 years. Both Red Cross and Victim Services were on scene during the fire to
make arrangements and offer support. Fire Chief Jeff Crawford said cooking should never be left unattended, especially oil. "It is extremely dangerous; it can overheat and spontaneously combust," Crawford said. "If it does take fire, put a lid on and turn off the heat source." Never throw water on a grease fire, he reminded. It will explode and increase the blaze tenfold. Response time was excellent since volunteer members of the department were conducting home smoke-detector inspections that evening. Crawford said the apartment complex was

Crawford said that his firefighters did an excellent job. "They were very professional and fast to knock it down and evacuate everyone," said Crawford. Smoke and water damaged much of the building. From dump trucks to fire trucks to a petting zoo and a bike parade it had it all. Close to 1,000 people attended the fourth annual Touch A Truck & Meet A Machine, hosted by the Arnprior Family Preschool Resource Centre – EarlyON on June 16 at the Arnprior Fairgrounds. Two-year-old Lucas Beaulne and his dad Jonathan Cloutier-Beaulne are all smiles in front of a fire truck at the event. And the school bus was a very popular stop especially for Avary and Evan Nicol.

“I want to turn a family legacy into a community legacy.” Chris, Restaurant Owner from Hamilton, ON As a third-generation Restaurant Owner, it isn’t surprising that Chris spent his childhood inside a Tim Hortons. There, his family taught him the ins and outs of business operations, and that the business is about more than serving cups of coffee. It’s about care. Now, Chris wakes up each morning excited to create a better community for his team and his guests. He also involves his children whenever he can, hoping they’ll continue in his legacy of giving back. Thank you, Chris. And thanks to all our Owners who make our community stronger.

OPINION
• EDITORIAL •
Caution: roadwork ahead Construction season is upon us and with that comes an increased need for motorists to pay attention and adjust their driving accordingly. The price for not doing so can be devastating. It was just two years ago in April 2016 when Daniel William Milton, 42, was hit and killed by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive. Another worker was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. In the fall of that year, a 70-year-old man was charged with careless driving. This fall, an inquest will be held in Renfrew to examine the events surrounding Milton's death. The jury may then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. It's only fair for those who work on our roads to have a safe and healthy workplace. With the provincial Conservatives' renewed commitment to get the four-laning of Highway 17 from Arnprior to Renfrew on the five-year plan, a major downtown reconstruction project in Renfrew and numerous smaller projects ongoing this summer, the need for safety is imperative. And with the many road construction projects underway in the Ottawa Valley and beyond, OPP are reminding motorists of the importance of construction zone safety and reducing speed when entering construction zones. OPP say drivers are advised to proceed with caution when approaching a construction zone and to obey all warning signs, people and/or devices that are directing traffic through the area. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person. Lower speeds are often posted in construction zones to increase worker safety and to reflect increased road hazards such as construction vehicles, uneven or gravel surfaces and narrowed lanes, say OPP. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. There are ways to be as prepared as possible for what you might encounter on the roads. Information on roads and construction projects in Ontario can be accessed through the Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information Services, which provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario, by calling 511 or by visiting the MTO Ontario 511 website at www.ontario.ca/511. Let's respect workers by making the choice to drive safely this summer.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Crew cleans up Arnprior and area for Big Give To the editor: The local Big Give by community churches on Saturday, June 2, included a cleanup contribution when adults and children from St. John's Lutheran collected garbage along both sides of Baskin and Division from Daniel to Caruso, including Caruso Park. Well done, crew! Many bags of garbage and some recyclables were collected. Numerous fastfood containers, cans, plastic bottles, bags, wrapping, straws, Styrofoam and countless cigarette butts went into the bags, along with some clothing, shoes and whole discarded bags of garbage.

Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) is a program supported by the courts and police across Canada to assist in the detection of impaired drivers. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers will continue to set up RIDE spot checks at random locations and times to ensure drivers are complying with the laws regarding consuming
alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants which may lead to impairing their ability to operate a motor vehicle. Fifteen RIDE spot checks were conducted during the last week, say Renfrew OPP. No impaired drivers were located at these checks. RIDE spot checks area a deterrent for impaired driving, you just
never know where or when a RIDE spot check may be set up. However, boaters weren't quite as well behaved. During four hours of patrol on White Lake by the OPP marine unit, four charges were laid. The patrol took place on Sunday, June 17 and all charges were for having open alcohol in a public place.

OUR 2018 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY CHANGING & GROWING WITH OUR COMMUNITY It’s been quite a year at Arnprior Regional Health and we have much to celebrate. This Report to the Community shines a light on the special care that takes place every day at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital, The Grove, The Primary Health Care Centre and through our community-based services. Together, we create a healthy
Your Partner in Health
Our new Vision sums it up: Together, we create a healthy community. Here are just a few examples from the past year:
Our work is guided by our new Strategic Plan which was developed after talking to many stakeholders. It sets ARH’s future direction, with a focus on Experience, Quality, People and Resources.
Mission accomplished! Last August, we heard the news we had all been waiting for - 36 additional beds for The Grove! Thank you to everyone who advocated for this important community resource.
ARH was awarded Accreditation with Exemplary Standing, the highest level awarded by Accreditation Canada. This rigorous survey validates our focus on improving quality, reducing risk, and strengthening accountability across the organization.
We’re making the healthy choice the easy choice in our cafeteria, gift shop and vending machines. ARH was awarded Silver Status in the Healthy Foods in Champlain Hospitals program.
Programs such as the Assisted Living Program and the Adult Day Program support frail/elderly adults living in our community. More than 40 clients benefit each month. A family member notes: “As an 81-year-old, I am a caregiver to my wife. This is an excellent program. It helps me keep her at home as long as I possibly can.”
SURVEY SAYS! The results are in and we couldn’t be prouder. Thank you for your input.

A Caring Community
Did you know that Arnprior Regional Health’s operating costs are covered by the government, but the cost of equipment is not? An important part of delivering quality care is ensuring that our medical equipment keeps pace with new technology. That’s where the ARH Foundation and the ARH Auxiliary come in - along with our generous community of course.
Thank you for your commitment to care close to home.
This past year was one of change for the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation. Its new name accurately reflects the organization’s charitable fundraising for The Grove and the Hospital. The Foundation also hired its first full-time executive director, Bruce Hill, along with a new development assistant, Christine Waite. A thorough overhaul of the Foundation ensued. The Foundation exceeded its 2016-2017 results ($239,969) with gross revenues of $372,867 the result of a robust giving program which includes annual, major and event giving, as well as legacy giving. The Foundation is now preparing for its first major $5M capital campaign to fund The Grove’s redevelopment and the purchase of medical equipment for The Grove and ADMH.
To learn more about Arnprior Regional Health, visit www.arnpriorhealth.ca ARH audited financial statements are posted on our website.

The ARH Auxiliary has also had a busy year. Thank you to the 145 active volunteers who provided 16,842 hours of service. They also raised $225,000 to fund a mobile x-ray unit and general equipment needs. In addition, two $1000 bursaries were awarded to local high school students. Congratulations to the six ARH volunteers who received Ontario Volunteer Services Awards. Thank you to Auxiliary President Bernice O’Connor (at right with Elaine Drabik from Human Resources) and our amazing team of volunteers.

Dentistry@Arnprior, along with sponsors and volunteers, held a free clinic that saw 67 patients in need receive $25,000 in dental care. Now it is planning for a patient appreciation night. A bus will take
patients from the Arnprior Shopping Centre location to Cineplex Kanata for a movie. Again, for free. Details such as date and time have yet to be confirmed. Then, at noontime on Friday,
Aug. 17, D@A will host a community barbecue at the shopping centre parking lot. It too, yes, is free. However, the gang will be collecting money in support of the Arnprior Humane Society's no-kill shelter.
Hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks and more will be available. With that much action going on, no wonder they are growing. A part-time position for a dental assistant has opened.

Celebrating Seniors in the Valley June is Seniors Month Some benefits of growing older are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old. · Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higherself-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brans simultaneously - something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.
Seniors becoming more tech-savvy Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their fingers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge.
Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their fitness regimens.

Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home, or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby.
Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage. LP183768

Arnprior boys fall short at regional soccer finals DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The boys team came away from the Eastern Ontario finals with a 1-1 record in high school soccer, but it wasn't enough to make the Ontario championship. The Arnprior District High School (ADHS) team hosted the Eastern Onta-
rio Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) event at Dochart Fields on May 29 with the hopes of advancing to Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) the next week. In their first game, the team faced St. Joseph's from Cornwall. "The boys competed hard and out chanced the
other team, but a few bad breaks led to a 3-0 loss," said Phil Moore, an ADHS teacher and coach. In their last game of the day, the boys faced North Grenville from Kemptville. The home team took care of business and won with a score of 5-2. "Congratulations to all team members for a strong season, and good luck to
our graduating players: Ryan Massoud, Porter Gibeault and Liam Mayhew," Moore said. Kingston Collegiate defeated St. Joe's to advance to the senior OFSAA championship in Windsor. Kingston Collegiate's junior team defeated Bishop Smith in penalty kicks, to win the EOSSAA championship.

Officials set to launch Grove fundraising campaign Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) Foundation officials are getting set to launch a fundraising campaign for the Grove Nursing Home redevelopment. "The Town of Arnprior is one of eastern Ontario's fastest growing communities and has one of the old-
est populations in the province," says a news release. "Seniors in the greater Arnprior region have expressed three main concerns: (1) they want to live in a safe and secure environment close to their family and friends; (2) they want to be
socially engaged with our community; (3) they want to be treated with respect and dignity." The new redeveloped Grove satisfies all three concerns, says the release. To help make the "new" Grove a reality, the foun-
dation is in the process of organizing a major fundraising campaign. With a $5-million goal, this campaign will not only support the redevelopment of the Grove, but will also raise money for vital new medical equipment and technology for ARH.
"In Ontario, a hospital's equipment expenditures are exclusively - 100% funded by its local community. The province only funds the hospital's operating costs, such as supplies and staffing," adds the release. The fundraising cam-
paign will be co-chaired by Glenn Arthur and Ed Reid. For more information about the Come Home to Great Care campaign, please contact Bruce Hill at 613-623-3166, ext. 532 or Bruce.Hill@arnpriorhealth.ca.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
