COMMUNITY

Full slate of activities set for Canada Day

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Plenty of traditional favourites and a few new events and activities promise to make the 151st Canada Day a great time for all ages in Arnprior. Fuel up with a big breakfast at the Masonic Hall between 8 and 11 a.m., thanks to the Lions Club, before popping around town to various venues. The newly named Arnprior Optimist Bob Legault Bicycle Parade - in honour of the longtime organizer begins registration at 9:30 a.m. at the Grace St. Andrew's United Church parking lot. The parade starts at 11:15 a.m., and goes from Ottawa Street to John Street, and then to Robert Simpson Park. At Hydro Park, beside East Side Mario's, the Show 'N Shine classic vehicle display takes place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. A barbecue and 50/50 draw is hosted by

Seniors at Home Program. Performing will be Gary Patrois at noon and Hot Jupiter during the evening. History buffs will get their fill. Arnprior and District Museum doors open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A blacksmith demonstration begins the day, followed by a re-enactment set for 10 a.m. Get the ultimate selfies at the historic costumes booth. The Arnprior Archives in the lower level of the public library has a display of 1966 photos of the Arnprior Lions Drum Corps. Rotary Club's Mad Duck Race starts from the Madawaska Bridge at 2 p.m. At Robert Simpson Park, be entertained from 11:30 a.m. to noon by line dancers Hyacinth Chatterton and the Hy-Liners. Mayor David Reid then delivers his final welcoming address before all on hand sing O Canada, led by Thomas Cherney. Gregory Murdoch will sign. The Le-

sentations to the senior of the year and youth of the year. Barbecues for both the Legion and the Lions take

place from noon to 5 p.m. at the park, which also hasCamp Wanago's lemony sip-its lemonade stand. New this year is the Arn-

prior Optimistic Women's Club hosting kids' games and crafts in the park. It runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Monica Lyons and the Arnprior School of Dance provides more entertainment at the park, as does fiddler Kyle Felhaver and Friends from 1 to 2 p.m. and Searson from 2 to 4 p.m. At dusk, about 9:45 p.m., the fireworks are released from the island below Madawaska Bridge. The car show is different than last year's, which was postponed to the first weekend in August because of rain. The event, Wheels of Arnprior, was organized by Brian Estrabrooks and considered a big success. Vehicle registration was up by 25 per cent and revenue rose by 20 per cent. That's why he decided to move the car show to Aug. 6 (Civic Holiday) this year, a time when few other car shows in the region are taking place. It will be at Hydro Park.

Dumpster fire, collision keep firefighters busy

Township council in conflict with landowners DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Residents are spending tens of thousands of dollars to defend against what they say is a hostile and dismissive council in Greater Madawaska. Complaints to Metroland Media revolve around land issues, two of the most egregious involving the Inglis family in the township's remote north-east and Lee Chapman in the village of Calabogie. The former has sunk about $20,000 and possibly much more to come over a severance dispute. The latter could lose a building the original fire hall - and almost $10,000 recently invested in it. Both say council has entered disagreements heavy-handedly and with no willingness to con-

sider solutions. Lawyers on all sides and provincial governing bodies are now involved. "It's not very neighbourly; they don't care," said Paula Inglis, about how her family has been treated by the municipality. "I believe it's an abuse of power within council." Inglis is employed at Metroland Media. Along Inglis Road where it intersects with Grant Road and Long Point Way (which leads to Hurd's Lake) is where Inglis wants to build a home for herself. Her father, Ken, lives nearby on the family homestead; they are seven generations in the area. When the Inglises brought the plan to build on 4.7 acres of the 190 they own, county planner Bruce Howarth said everything was

fine except for some concern of the three-way intersection. The family is well aware of the road's dangers. Paula's brother was killed along that road - which the family had given to the township - many years ago. They figured making it a three-way stop would do the trick. However, when the issue came to the township a number of other conditions were put in place and the costs began to escalate. Greater Madawaska doesn't pay to survey roads, so it wanted the Inglises to survey the entire area at a cost of $25,000. The township also wants 1.1 of the 4.7 acres. The township has stated that it doesn't intend to widen the road, which is the only reason for doing l See LEGAL, page 5

Arnprior firefighters responded to two working calls on Sunday, June 24. The first call was an early morning motor vehicle collision outside of town boundaries at the corner of Shaw Road and Highway 29 - en route to Pakenham - in which two vehicles collided headon. Arnprior fire personnel utilized the Jaws of Life to spread open and cut off the door of a Chevy Tahoe, and extricate two occupants from the badly damaged vehicle. The other vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, had one occupant and was handled by personnel from Ottawa Fire Services. Three peo-

ple were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The second call of the day was in late evening for a dumpster fire in the garbage chute at the apartment building located at 6 John St. Firefighters' quick response contained the fire to the dumpster with minor smoke migration into the corridor. One tenant was treated at scene for burns to his hand sustained while trying to put out the fire. Another man was transported to hospital with chest pains experienced while attempting to evacuate. All residents were able to return to their apartments.

a survey. "They don't have many surveys of these roads, so they can ask the same of anybody in the township who wants to sever their land," Inglis said. The family paid a variety of fees which are set to expire after one year. To not lose that investment, they've had to challenge the municipality at the Ontario Municipal Board. At the May 15 hearing, Inglis said the township agreed to lift the survey requirement, then realized it doesn't have the power to overturn its own decision. The OMB has not issued a final conclusion. Meanwhile, Inglis rents a residence next to the property she wants to build on. That cost rises the longer the case drags on. "There are a lot of expenses they are not aware of," she said, adding they live in a low-service area

where the township doesn't provide fire protection. "It's extremely frustrating." After several attempts to reach Mayor Glenda McKay, she agreed to schedule an interview; then could not be reached again. Coun. Brian Hunt said asking for a road survey and taking some land, what is known as a "required setback," is normal in severance cases. "This is not at all unusual," Hunt said, adding that the Inglises should have come to a council meeting to plead their case near the beginning of the process. Inglis said most municipalities wouldn't have handled their case this way. So they had no reason - and were not encouraged - to attend a council meeting. "Like I said, not very neighbourly," she said. In the former fire-hall case, Hunt said Chapman's

Submitted/Lee Chapman

The Township of Greater Madawaska wants the shed next to the community centre entrance torn down. Its shed sits on Lee Chapman's property, and he's used it as his own for years. spouse was invited numerous times to speak before council. They didn't. Hunt won't speak further on the topic, saying it is now "a legal matter." The fire hall sits on Chapman's property next to the community centre entrance. A former owner bequeathed it to the township back in the mid-1960s. Successive owners of the

property going back decades have treated it as their own shed. Chapman has done the same, putting money into it just recently. However, the township recently sent a letter telling him that it belongs to the municipality and the electricity was cut. He was told a private property sign will be erected. He put up his own sign first.

"This is just heavyhanded politics, is what it is," Chapman said. "I have no clue what is going on. No one will tell me what is going on. This has become a matter of principle now." He has the provincial integrity commissioner investigating. Chapman suspects the township deems the shed unsightly and wants it re-

moved from the area near the community centre. But because the ownership isn't clear, the township doesn't know how to proceed, he said. "It's become a fly in the ointment," Chapman said. "For my part, it's hard to fight an enemy when you don't know what the fight is about." McKay could not be reached for comment on the issue. The two cases don't come as a surprise to Dwight Badham, who along with several township residents had their own conflict with council last year. "They are completely unaccountable," Badham said. "They launch these letters, give deadlines, but the mayor and council won't discuss them." Badham said, in relation to his case, the issue was mostly resolved after the group spoke before council, but not entirely.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Arnprior residents throwing block parties now have to fill out an application form, follow guidelines and pay a $5 fee. Council decided at the June 11 meeting that residents would go through the following process: . contact the clerk's office; . fill out a consent form

showing the support of more than 50 per cent of affected neighbours; . submit the completed Block Party Application and $5 fee (subject to change) at least four weeks prior to proposed block party; . if approved, the clerk's office will notify the applicant of a contact person who will provide street barricades. "Neighbourhood block

parties build goodwill and strengthen community ties," reads the staff's report on the issue. "The attached application form is for the temporary closure of a street, or a portion thereof, in order to hold a block party or other similar event." No alcohol on public lands, fireworks or loud music is allowed. Block parties are allowed on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays

"It's kind of sad that it has come to this." - Elaine Lowe and statutory holidays. When the issue first came to council following a complaint over a Bell Street party, no councillor voiced opposition to them in principle. However,

there has been concern that no damage is done to public property and emergency vehicles are able to pass through safely. Both councillors Lynn Grinstead and Frank Dugal were happy to see the process is kept "simple." Elaine Lowe organizes the annual Bell Street party that takes place after Labour Day. She is "really pleased" town hall has acted on the issue because it

gives neighbours a chance to spend time together. Kids have a scavenger hunt at hers, and wheelbarrow bonfire draws everyone into a circle. However, the process to hold one is far more onerous than simply calling neighbours on the phone. "It's kind of sad that it has come to this. It used to be a little bit more organic," Lowe said. "But I guess somebody has to be liable."

Arnprior council approves guidelines, fee for block parties

Town council to scale back on crossing guards DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Arnprior will likely scale back on human crossing guards before the next school season begins. At the June 11 meeting, council heard from a staff report recommending they eliminate the crossingguard position at Madawaska and Bell streets. A lighted pedestrian crossover sign should be placed at Madawaska and Harriet streets. One reason is that stu-

dents gather and cross near Milano's Pizzeria and Circle K convenience store. The crossing between The Rock Church and Negi's Restaurant is also more dangerous, with the nearby municipal parking lot. Another reason has to do with fewer young students going home for lunch. Schools want an adult to sign them out. That means fewer kids on the roads at midday. The report suggests eliminating lunch-hour coverage at two other locations, as

well: Ottawa and Bell streets, and Ottawa and John streets. A third reason is the difficulty in attracting crossing guards. It pays little (although council is considering upping the pay) leaving no backups this past winter should one fall ill. Yet another reason, perhaps the most crucial, is that replacing the crossing guard with a sign will save money over the long term. The town pays for crossing guards at six locations, including Baskin Drive and

Stonehaven Way, Edey Street and Allan Drive, and Ottawa and Harriet streets. The program costs the town almost $55,000 per year. The Catholic board chips in about $5,000 to offset it. The public board does not contribute. If lunchtime service is eliminated, the town's cost would drop to about $40,000 next year. If the sign replaces a crossing guard, that amount goes down to about $33,000. It would be even less if all crossing guards were replaced with

signs. Councillors Tom Burnette and Ted Strike favour the signs. But Reeve Walter Stack wants to see if the public school board is willing to contribute any money. Walter Zadow Public School principal Peter Burnette said he isn't authorized to comment. Jonathan Laderoute, spokesperson at the Renfrew County District School Board, said the Ministry of Education does not fund crossing guards in Onta-

rio, so it is not factored into the board's costs. According to the Municipal Act, crossing guards are the town's responsibility. "We are open to dialogue but not looking to change at this time," Laderoute said. "We've worked with a number of municipalities to find solutions. Right now, we don't feel we are able to contribute, or that it's something we are willing to get into." Council will vote on staff's report at a future meeting.

Play safe this summer The news this weekend of an ongoing search for a swimmer swept away in the rapids of the Ottawa River in Whitewater Region is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of summer activities. As temperatures rise, countless Valley residents and visitors will flock to our many waterways, attractions and outdoor spaces. And while we certainly should not let the risks prevent us from enjoying what our wonderful region has to offer, it's wise to keep safety in mind to prevent summer fun from turning to tragedy. June 30-July 8 marks National Fishing Week in Canada. The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is reminding anglers that wearing your life-jacket is even more important than wearing your lucky fishing hat. "But they do share one trait," says the CSBC. "They both have to be worn to be effective!" According to the council and the Lifesaving Society, 80 per cent of recreational boaters who drown each and every year in Canada were not wearing a life-jacket or personal flotation device (PFD). Most of these drownings occur in small, open powerboats, says the CSBC, accounting for 60 per cent of these preventable deaths. A majority of these victims were males between the ages of 19 and 35, out for a day of fishing. Many of those who don't wear their life-jackets or PFDs believe that, since they are good swimmers, having them on board and within easy reach is good enough. But a life-jacket stored under a seat or up in the bow will be of no help when the unexpected happens, like falling overboard while trying to net the catch. Many of today's anglers are delighted with the models that are designed especially to suit their needs, says the CSBC. They're rugged, allow for full freedom of movement to cast and are constructed with lots of pockets for gear. Some even come equipped with an attachment from which to hang a landing net. The council advises that when choosing a life-jacket, anglers should also check the label to make sure it is Transport Canada approved, is the correct size and fits snugly. Today, many anglers choose to wear an inflatable life-jacket because they are cool, fully adjustable and provide full arm motion. These are available in both manual and auto-inflate models, which make them extremely versatile. The law states that these must be worn to be legal, rather than just be kept in the boat. Also, they are only legal where the wearer is 16 years of age or older. For more info on boating safety, visit www.csbc.ca. General summer safety tips can be found at canadasafetycouncil.org.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • The politics of gasoline prices To the editor: This spring Ontarians, rural residents in particular, felt the pinch of high prices at the gas pumps. Naturally, a provincial election recently concluded where the party with the most ambitious plan for lowering gas prices, Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives, won the plurality of the vote. Arguably however, elected politicians should not be attempting to lower gasoline prices. Like most commodities, gasoline is priced based upon supply-demand market economics. Unless someone can demonstrate the existence of laws or monopolies that

are intended to stifle gasoline pricing competition (like laws that purposely diminish competition in the dairy and pharmaceutical industries), it stands to reason that gasoline is fairly priced at the most affordable level allowing the least amount of wasteful consumption of limited resources. That argument is of course cold comfort to those who are barely or unable to afford transportation. But for those in dire need, sound public policy will focus on boosting their overall incomes, not on arbitrarily lowering the prices of some of their needed commodities (as per notorious central-planning economics). Gasoline is subject to special taxation, but with every tax the question is,

Lesson learned To the editor: Our mailbox was destroyed a short time ago. I contacted the OPP. In a short time, Brenda Beauchamp, youth justice worker for the Phoenix Centre, called to ask

what we wanted, and I said an apology, to have the mailbox replaced and for each involved do 200 community service hours. Last week two wellspoken, well-dressed gentlemen came to our door and apologized. They asked what we wanted and we said a new mailbox and 200 community service hours. They took a look at our bashed-in mailbox, went to Renfrew for an exact replacement and delivered it. They would have replaced it, but my husband said he wanted to install it. We thanked the gentlemen and said we hoped that they had learned a lesson, and they said they did. Mae Craig River Road, Renfrew

which Ontarians are getting the money from the tax? Perhaps MPP John Yakabuski was onto something when he suggested that more gas tax money should go to rural Ontario. Some animals have eyes that never see

Michael Runtz encounters a stunning moth

The eyes of animals are fascinating structures. Those of hawks and eagles magnify distant objects allowing their owners to detect a meal. Contrary to popular belief, they only magnify two to three times what we would see. In addition to making objects larger, they provide exceedingly sharp vision due to millions of light receptor cells (cones) packed into the retina. Like hawk eyes, owls eyes are large to gather light. Unlike those of their diurnal counterparts, however, they are packed with rods, receptor cells that are extremely sensitive to the low levels of light sent from the moon and stars. While not as sharp as that of a hawk, an owl's vision is much more functional in the dark of night. Insect eyes are very different from those of birds. They own compound eyes, which means that each apparent eye is composed of hundreds, even thousands of individual components. Compound eyes do not make hundreds of individual pictures of an item (as does a bank of televisions all on the same station in

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column a large box store) but provide one consolidated image. Eye placement also varies between animal groups. Animals that are hunted such as snowshoe hares, ducks and songbirds tend to have their eyes placed on the sides of their head to provide a wider view of the world around them. Mallards and hares can see a full 360 degrees without moving their head; they literally have eyes on the back of their heads! American bitterns cannot see behind them for their eyes are placed near their beak so that when they point their heads straight up to avoid detection, allowing their breast streaks to blend into the cattails around them, they still keep their eyes on any approaching danger. Then there are animals that in addition to possessing eyes that see the world around them have

other "eyes" that never see. These eyes can be on display all the time or hidden until their bearer wants them to be revealed. Known as eye-spots, their only function is one of deceit. Insects such as the eyed elater (a large click beetle) appear to have huge dark eyes that stare at you intently from the top of their pronotum (the platelike structure located just behind their head). These eyespots make the beetle look like a much larger animal, thereby deterring some predators from considering it a meal. Some moths have eye-spots on their hindwings, which are hidden under the first set of wings when the moth resting. When the upperwings open, large "eyes" suddenly appear, startling the attacker and giving the moth precious seconds to vanish behind a tree or into vegetation. For that reason these eye-spots are known as "startle patterns." Recently I came across an io moth, a stunning yellow moth whose caterpillar bears poison spines, resting on a tree trunk. When its wings opened, two gigantic, gorgeous blue eyes suddenly appeared. If I'd been a bird looking forward to an easy meal, I likely would have nearly jumped out of my feathers! A homegrown talent, Jamie Anne Bentz, returns to Arnprior for the release of her first EP in nearly five years. The Braeside-raised singer/songwriter performs at venues throughout the city of Ottawa, where she now calls home, but coming back to her roots is always a special treat. "I like being in Ottawa but there's something about coming back and feeling all the support," Bentz said. "And there are so many amazing country artists in the Ottawa Valley. It's almost like, 'Who am I to sing country?'" Her new album, After the Smoke Clears, was pro-

NOW

duced in Toronto by the highly in demand Collin Carnegie of Renfrew. Add in River Town Saints from Arnprior, Jason Blaine of Pembroke, and several others and Bentz's point about country talent in the valley truly takes shape. Bentz's last EP was a pop-rock fusion. But with songwriting as one of her strengths, she's embraced the storytelling aspect afforded in country music. She points to Shania Twain as an influence. "I feel like you can really tell a story with country," she said. "You can take people on a journey." A nurse in the neonatal unit at Queensway Carleton Hospital, Bentz sometimes sings to babies under distress. "Usually lullabies be-

fore the medication kicks in," she said. "It does work. And I get to combine my two favourite things. Music makes people feel better. I love to see people smiling." It's the immediate feedback that has provided Bentz with a reputation for stage presence. She is known for high energy performances that are uplifting for fans. Her band, called her "jam buddies," includes Dan Palubiski and Darius Moghaddam. Bentz plays keyboards. Jamie Anne Bentz will perform songs from the new EP at the release party, held Friday, June 29, at John St. Pub. Doors open at 8 p.m. with her show starting at 8:45. Adam Hrkosh is the opening performer. EPs will be available for purchase at the free show.

Student's class project benefits Hospice Renfrew

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The day after Kassandra Coggan's greatgrandmother passed from her world, the Nobody doll entered. And it gave her an idea that would have filled Jacqueline Legree with pride. Legree's final days were at Hopsice Renfrew. It offers a variety of programs from pain management to bereavement support. It also has six beds offering 24-7 care in a homelike setting and provides services free of charge to all residents in the county. Kassandra, a Grade 4 student at St. Joseph's Arnprior, decided she and Nobody - a character building project many

schools use - would knock on doors throughout her neighbourhood to ask for donations. She also made flyers and a carefully detailed donation box those residences behind the legion could contribute to the $132 raised. "I wanted to do it for hospice and anybody that is staying there," Kassandra said. "It was a pretty nice place; just like a home." Executive director (and St. Joe alumna) Maureen Sullivan-Bentz is always excited to see young people championing the hospice. It is important to demystify death for them, she said. And every dollar gets put to good use. "I'll use this money you gave us right away," she

told Kassandra. "You know how your greatgrandmother loved her bacon and eggs in the morning? We'll use this money to buy more for the next person. That's how important it is." Hospice is partially funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for 65 per cent of nursing salaries. The remaining 35 per cent as well as 100 per cent of ongoing operational funding - a total of $600,000 per year - must be generated locally through fundraising events, grants, donations, in-memoriam contributions and bequests. Dochart soccer park to install lights The Township of McNab/Braeside celebrated the receipt of a $150,000 capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to add lighting to one of the sports fields at Dochart Soccer Park. The Dochart Soccer Park at Duncan Drive has three main fields used throughout the summer by the Arnprior McNab Braeside United Soccer

Club (AMBUSC). The soccer park is unique to the area and supports programming for active people of all ages. "This is great news for our township," said Mayor Tom Peckett. "This project supports our local soccer players and opens up new programming opportunities during the fall months to better use this township facility." Township staff is cur-

rently working on field design, with lighting installation to occur this fall. The new field lighting will be in place for the 2019 season. "Field usage has been at capacity weekdays during the summer, limiting the programs our club can offer," said AMBUSC president Bryan Terrell. hosting fundraising events this summer to provide additional financial support for this project. Almost 100 square miles, the Township of McNab/Braeside is situated between the towns of Arnprior and Renfrew. The township is within easy commuting distance of downtown Ottawa. Bordering the Ottawa River on the northeast and White Lake on the south-

west, with the magnificent Madawaska River flowing through it, the municipality is a nature's paradise. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF is one of Canada's largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million, OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to building healthy and vibrant Ontario communities.

ADHS students take home awards

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Hannah Perreault was happy to see an award put on hiatus for more than a decade brought back to the annual banquet at Arnprior District High School. For the 2017-18 school year, Perreault was named the student-athlete with the highest academic average. "I'm really glad they brought this back," Perreault said, at the June 14 gala dinner event held in the big gym. "It meant a lot of late nights studying, but was worth it in the end." She heads off to the University of Ottawa next year to study health sciences, but on this night she was just excited to see many friends winning a variety of awards. "It's been a really great night. I think all the athletes are very deserving." Justin Smith and Ryan Massoud share the top senior male athlete award. Sydney Moore and Sarah Dean are top senior female athletes.

CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES In celebration of the great community support received throughout the years, Canadian Blood Services honoured longtime Valley radio show host and Braeside resident Victor Garbutt in Ottawa on June 6 at the regional Honouring Our Lifeblood event. The Ottawa and area Honouring Our LifeBlood event is an annual recognition ceremony for those who have achieved significant milestones donating blood, platelets and plasma. Since Canadian Blood Services' inception 20 years ago, this event continually celebrates partners, volunteers and stem cell donors. Garbutt, a whole blood and platelet donor, was honoured at the event for having made a total of 504 whole blood and platelet donations. Garbutt was the final donor to receive

his award - he exceeded all other attendees by more than 200 donations. He received a standing ovation while presented with his award from Judy and Becky Littau (wife and mother of late blood recipient Dustin Littau). Garbutt represented Canadian Blood Services on Sunday, June 10 at the Ottawa Champions Baseball Game. Seven-year-old blood recipient Kevin Saenz threw the first pitch to Garbutt to start the ball game. About Canadian Blood Services Canadian Blood Services manages the national supply of blood, blood

Opportunity is knocking, Aries. You must tune in and listen to it this week. Stay passionate in your endeavors, but exercise a little cautioun as well.

Cancer, you are heading in the right direction, but you may have to fine-tune the destination this week. Your intended romantic target may not be the perfect fit.

People often see you as even-keeled, Libra. But tempers may flare this week if you don’t get your way. Others should watch when you’re fired up.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22

Planning and project management seemingly takes over your life, Leo. Just when you think there is no time for fun, an exciting opportunity falls in your lap.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

There isn’t a day that goes by without us thinking “why.” So many things we wanted to say, we never imagined you’d be so far away. In our hearts you’ll always be until the time is meant for us to meet. But we know you’re always by our side. We shared so many happy memories may our love for you reach heaven today. We love you and miss you Wish you were here Mom & Dad xo xo xo

A glowing ember never fades, Throughout the end of time. No matter what the future brings, Or what lays ahead. I know that you will always walk with me, Along the path I tread. So rest my angel be at peace Let your soul fly free. One day I will join you For all eternity. Love Mom insideottawavalley.com

In Memory of Linda Cross 1946-2018 I love you, Mom, with all my heart. I miss you so much and I am proud that you were my mom. You were a strong woman to go through all the ups and downs in your life and you are the woman I want to become. You have conquered a liver and kidney transplant; you had the biggest liver for your height (17 pounds). You had a second kidney transplant and your loving husband (my Dad) was a match, so you will always have a piece of him with you. Diabetes, German measles, eye surgery, etc. You have lost so much with the passing of your parents and siblings, but you saw your children grow up and become amazing people. You had the pleasure of experiencing all their happiness and sorrows. You were with them through all their relationships, you even saw one get married twice and you had three beautiful grandchildren. You always told me that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. All I really want to tell you, Mom, is that you will be sadly missed by your husband, Harris Cross Sr, your children, Melinda Welch and Harris Cross Jr., your grandchildren Dylan & Damien Mee, Leon Cross and family and friends. We will hold you dearly in our hearts and carry you with us to see your grandchildren graduate high school, go to college, get married and have babies of their own. You will always live in our memories and hearts forever. Love your loving daughter, Melinda.

Picking off potato bugs one of most hated jobs on the farm

As far as I was concerned, it was the most hateful job on the entire farm! Mother’s garden was flourishing this time of year, and that included her row-on-row of potatoes. They were covered with blossoms, and that meant they were also covered with potato bugs, which I loathed with a passion! Because, all of us had the job of getting rid of them. There was no easy way of doing it. Each of us carried a little tin can of coal oil, and we went up and down the rows of potatoes and pinched off the bugs, and put them into the coal oil where they soon were floating on their backs dead as doornails. I wanted to wear the only pair of white gloves I owned, and they were only put on my hands for church, and I knew there wasn’t a chance in the world Mother would let me get away with wearing them to pick off the bugs, and so like everyone else, I had to use my bare hands. Mother tried to take some of the pain out of the job by promising we could make ice cream when we were finished, and have a sort of picnic in the grape arbour. But the thought of eating anything after picking off potato bugs held little appeal for any of us. Father had the little pails all lined up on the back stoop waiting for us when we finished breakfast, which was earlier than usual, since Mother said it was best we start before the real heat of the day

MARY COOK Column settled in. Each pail had a couple inches of coal oil in it, and the smell just about knocked me over. We all had a row to start in, and if anyone finished too quickly, Father was right there to check to make sure the job was being done right. Of course, if we missed more than the odd bug, he would make us go right back to the start of the row and begin all over again. Making the job even more hateful was our having to wear long sleeves to keep the mosquitoes from eating us alive. So as the sun rose higher and higher in the Northcote sky, whatever we had on was soon sticking to our backs like tar paper. You had to be sure you dunked the potato bug into the coal oil, because if you didn’t, it simply crawled out of the can and went to another plant. So it wasn’t long until our fingers were covered with coal oil, which I was sure was doing us bodily harm. Mother assured me a good soaking in warm soapy water when we were finished was all that was needed to get rid of both the coal oil and the smell. When we had completed the hateful job, Father gathered up all the little cans and took them into the drive shed, and with a sieve over a pail, he emptied each can.

That was good coal oil, and it wasn’t to be wasted. The sieve full of dead or dying potato bugs was taken behind the silo and buried, and hopefully that was the end of the job for another year. But sometimes, if the weather was hot and everything else fell into place, there would be another batch of potato bugs, and the whole job would have to be done over again. I could never understand why we had to bother with getting rid of them in the first place. The plants were high, the potatoes were deep in the ground, and the bugs were nowhere near them. So why did we have to bother with killing them? When I asked my sister Audrey, she had no explanation either. It was just one of the prices we had to pay to have a cellar full of potatoes to tide us over the long winters ahead. It wasn’t a job that could be finished quickly either. It sometimes took the better part of the day. When it was done to Father’s satisfaction, we soaked our hands in the wash basin of hot soapy water, which Mother had to change often, before we could rid our hands of the smell of coal oil. When Mother got out the old homemade ice cream maker, sadly none of us had much stomach for what was ahead. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books?
