Gabriel Flowers is running to become the next mayor of Arnprior. The basis of his campaign is on additional programs for older youths. He is also considering his position on several key issues, including the waterfront redevelopment that will likely come up next term.

Arnprior now has a race for mayor. Gabriel Flowers has lived in town for 19 of his 23 years and, for the most part, likes the direction it's heading. But there are a few things he wants to see happen. "It's a great town, but there are other things I'd want to see here," said Flowers, from the public library on July 5. "There are not the same number of youth programs that I remember. There's lots for the 12 and under age, but not much to see and do for the older ones." The skate park at Nick Smith Centre and a play structure at Robert Simpson Park are out of date, he said. Seniors programs are "moving in the right direction," Flowers said, but more of them are needed. An employee at the Source, formerly at Shoppers Drug Mart, Flowers said he hasn't had much time to investigate tax issues since signing up to run on June 21. He is pleased with the downtown revital-

ization, which he said was necessary and "looks great." The goal to pave a road a year is a good one, he said. Beyond that he hasn't formulated opinions on what could become a big issue next term: the waterfront redevelopment. He is also considering his position on bringing jobs to town. Walmart would harm small businesses, he said, but other large businesses should be approached to set up in Arnprior. On his opponent, Walter Stack, he said he won't run a negative campaign against him. Politics should be about bringing people together, he said. "I don't have a bad thing to say about him," Flowers said. He plans to introduce himself to other candidates, hold meet and greets, and may campaign door to door, though he is considering otherwise since people don't appreciate solicitors. Flowers said he intended to run for council, but upon learning that twoterm mayor David Reid won't run again, decided to go for the top job. "I saw and opportunity

and when opportunity knocks you gotta go for it," said the son of Penny and Jim Flowers. "I'm getting a lot of good feedback. Especially on the youth lacking category." He can be reached at flowersgabriel6@gmail.com. Also signed up for Arnprior is Dan Lynch for county councillor. Incumbents Ted Strike, Frank Dugal and Tom Burnette want a council seat. Not currently on council but running for a seat is Glenn Miller. There are seven positions on Arnprior council. In the Township of McNab/Braeside, incumbent Tom Peckett is running for mayor. No one has registered to run for deputy mayor. Running for one of three council seats is Oliver Jacob, and incumbent Scott Brum. Andy Bray is running for trustee on the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. Colette Stitt wants to be trustee on the French public school board. And Robert Lemelin is signed up for trustee of the French Catholic board. All are unopposed as of July 4.

"We are always short at this time of year. The cupboards are bare," said Pat Tait, of the Arnprior and District Food Bank. "It's tough, because everybody gets into the giving mood in the fall." And there are more in need than ever before, Tait said. Despite the minimum wage increase and other measures to address poverty, food bank client numbers keep rising: 245 were served in March. "The need is going up and so are our client numbers," Tait said. "In the last three weeks, several new clients have come and most of them are working." The working poor are a new reality at the food bank, along with others like seniors with health problems, and single mothers with babies or kids wanting to attend college.

Tait has heard all the criticisms of food banks. She considers herself a conservative "in many ways" and that what takes place is not a handout but a hand-up. “The food bank is open usually three Mondays a month between 9:30 a.m. and noon. It isn't a lot,” she said. While clients are grateful, Tait said, the atmosphere during Mondays isn't gloomy or full of hopelessness. There's a children's area, and children always make a room brighter. The process takes some time as clients are getting registered (ID is required), so lots of conversations take place. "It's a meeting place," Tait said. "It's a happy place, actually." Some credit goes to the 24 volunteers, many of whom have taken the initiative to get trained in emergency health training (thanks to the generosity of Dean Di-

monte and Premergency.) Many longtime residents of Arnprior many not realize the food bank is open in the summer, which started two years ago. But word is getting around. A volunteer is making healthy recipes with meat alternatives for 12 weeks. Grace St. Andrew's United Church has a vegetable garden for the second year, which is very popular among food bank clients. Clients "love to get fresh vegetables. Who doesn't," Tait said from the food bank in the basement of Saint John Chrysostom Church. She shows a church donation and opens freezers showing some day-old bread from nearby grocery stores. A few boxes of toiletries were bought with monetary contributions. Any groups or individuals doing a food drive can ask her for a suggested list. One recent food drive was

the Township of McNab/ Braeside's Summer Safety Barbecue. An auto dealership and several dentists are also known for their generosity, so is a home decor retailer and the 174 legion branch. Those who may want to become a client or have more questions are asked to call 613-668-4462 and leave a message.

OPG IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TO PROTECT ONTARIO’S BIODIVERSITY. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is conducting research in the vicinity of its hydroelectric generating stations on the Ottawa River. This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk. Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as they complete day and nighttime fish abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This annual research is conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13), under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of October.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The annual summer safety barbecue at the township offices in McNab/Braeside was hit again this year. It is an event that grows every year. With plenty for the kids to do, including a petting zoo, face painting and balloons, and safety educational materials, parents seem to enjoy bringing the family to lunch under the shade of trees on June 29. The fire department put on extrication demonstrations this year; it has new stabilizing equipment for vehicle crashes. OPP allowed kids to crawl through a cruiser. Paramedics were also on hand.

A new environmental organization has formed, with a focus on making Arnprior more sustainable and aware of harmful effects on the natural world. Prior Eco Action came into being at a June 21 meeting held at the public library. About half a dozen members comprise the group, which prides itself on inclusivity and a promise to build links within the community. Spokeswoman Pat Washington said creating positive change is a challenge in large cities. She managed to put together a team that cleaned up litter in her former community of Peterborough. Building on the annual cleanup day in Arnprior should be possible, she said. "You can do things in small towns that you can't do in big cities," Washington said. "It's about working to promote a sustainable, renewable environment." Prior Eco Action plans to involve itself in the municipal campaign that concludes on Oct. 22. It will survey residents - through the library's electronic newsletter and elsewhere - to find out what are top environmental concerns for residents. Candidates will be encouraged to respond to the results. Should public meetings take place, the group will have representatives putting questions to those seeking a seat on council. Another idea will see students producing environment-related essays in order to win prizes. The next meeting date has yet to be determined, but it could take place in July and feature a guest speaker sharing expertise on vermiculture: using worms in composting. The group is a spinoff of the library's current affairs group, which meets regularly in the nonsummer seasons. For more information or to join Prior Eco Action, contact Pat Washington at 613-761-2452.

ABOUT US

Reporter’s final weekend assignment rocks Something special happened in downtown Renfrew on Saturday night. I must admit I'm late to the party discovering this gem. When you walk into Batstone's Northern Ramble (45 Railway Ave. Renfrew) you're instantly transformed. Dean Batstone has magically renovated this 130year-old church into one of the most intimate and perfect music venues I have ever visited. It reminded me of Massey Hall, just a lot smaller and hotter, but any good rock show should be sweaty right? To check out who is set to perform next visit: https://www.northernramble.com/ . On Saturday, July 7 Renfrew artist Jordan Dubeau launched his first-ever solo EP, his hard work and dedication to his craft was evident and the standing ovation crowd loved every moment. His style is an unexpected mix of rock/bluesy/folk that will have you wanting more. It reminded me of a band my husband and I saw on our first date almost 15 years ago but Dubeau brings a modern twist to it all. Dubeau's lyrics are emotional, fun and tell a story, his guitar riffs have even the most experienced guitarist wanting to hear them again. For more information or to purchase his new EP visit: https://www.jordandubeaumusic.com/. Opening for him was Nic & I Music, another local talented couple who describe themselves as blues/roots/rock. They will also be hosting their own CD release party at the

TIFFANY LEPACK Column Rocky Mountain House on July 21 at 8 p.m. where Dubeau will return the favour and open for them. Also hitting the stage was Mister & His Sister, where Dubeau played some old and new songs with his sister Kristy Gutoskie. Dubeau thanked Batstone for having a venue like his in Renfrew. Through connections Dubeau made playing there he had the opportunity to record his EP in Toronto. Batstone, who was also recently awarded the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce Award for best New Business, has also given Renfrew and area residents an opportunity to experience something that is hard to find in the Ottawa Valley or across Canada: an intimate, affordable, first-class concert experience. These two are inspirations because they are living their dreams. When an opportunity presents itself to you - either well planned, or out of the blue - you must take it. That is why I have decided to leave Metroland Media and the Renfrew Mercury; I received a phone call for an opportunity that I just can't pass up. Thank you to everyone who has let me tell their stories over the years. Remember when opportunity knocks you must go and carpe diem! – Tiffany Lepack is a reporter with Metroland Media. A most unusual immigrant

Plenty of illegal immigrants in nature, writes Michael Runtz

MICHAEL RUNTZ Column The term "illegal immigrants" has been prominent in recent news. Of course, this refers to people who left their native homeland and secretly entered a different country. Nature, too, has plenty of illegal immigrants. Many of the local wildflowers currently blooming along roadsides are non-native species; chicory, blueweed (a.k.a. viper's bugloss), yarrow, and ox-eye daisy are but a few. Some of nature's immigrants came to North America as decorative plants that escaped from the confines of their backyard prisons. Others arrived as seeds stowed in the soil ballast of sailing ships. When the soil was dumped to allow boats closer approach to the mainland, the seeds washed ashore and germinated. Eventually the plants spread to other parts of North America. Insects have also arrived surreptitiously. Some came with plants brought by the settlers. Others arrived with food and timber shipped from afar, some like the emerald ash borer have devastating effects on native flora. Others, including the European skipper, a small butterfly found abundantly along roadsides, have been more benign. A grasshopper I recently came across

falls into the latter category. The first feature that caught my eye was bright green markings adorning its thorax (the body section containing legs and wings) and prothorax (the shieldlike structure behind the head). The second was its whip-like antennae, a feature that placed it in the long-horned orthopterans (orthoptera is the order of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids). The grasshopper was a European species known as Roesel's katydid (Metrioptera roeselii). After their discovery near Montreal in 1953, Roesel's katydids spread through Quebec, Ont., and the northeastern states. Like most of their kin, they eat plants, especially grasses. However, the katydid group to which they belong also has a penchant for eating smaller insects, which makes them omnivores. In southern and central Europe, where it is known as Roesel's bush-cricket, its range is also expanding. There it occurs in both a short-winged, reputedly flightless form and a longwinged, flying form. The longwinged form is rare, constituting only about one per cent of the population, but during hot summers more of this type is produced. Thus, warmer summers due to climate change have likely played a role in its range expansion. In North America the longwinged form is prevalent and very likely this summer we will see many more of that type produced. To attract mates, male Roesel's katydids stridulate, which means they rub together a "file" and a "scraper" at the base of their forewings to create a raspy "song." Males sing from tall grasses to achieve a wider broadcast. Once a female is attracted and suitably impressed, she climbs on the singer's back and copulation proceeds. During mating, male katydids employ several types of genital

structures. One is a paired structure known as "titillaters" whose purpose was unknown until recently when German researchers found that inside female Roesel's katydids, the titillaters beat a rhythm against a plate loaded with sensory cells. Thus, the titillaters' function is to stimulate. It appears that even for grasshoppers sex can be titillating! Gas station in Arnprior to renovate at the June 25 meeting. The necessary plans and drawings were submitted in February; a security of almost $80,000 was deposited. She said the gas bar will be demolished and replaced with a convenience store similar to the new MacEwen on Madawaska Boulevard. The parking

will be in front. The car wash won't be replaced. "It's really a redesign of the existing site," Paquette said. "They'd like to get started as soon as possible." No change to the entrances will occur. Coun. Dan Lynch asked if it will affect the paving work planned for near the

first entrance to No Frills. Paquette said it won't. Reeve Walter Stack asked for timeline, guessing similar work takes about three months. Mayor David Reid said knowing how businesses don't make money when closed, "they'll be doing it in a hurry."

The gas station nearest Highway 417 will have a complete makeover, removing the car wash and building a convenience store.

My Husband S/Sgt Harry Llewelyn C.D. RCAMC Who passed away July 12th, 2016 You were my love, you were my life. The day you left my life went with you. The road is long and lonely that I have to walk alone. You were always here beside me, now I walk this road alone. You were always such a joy to have you by my side, now there is only loneliness as I walk this road alone. As I walk this road alone, I hear a familiar voice, the road is long and lonely, that you have to walk alone. Have courage just a little longer, you’ll be with me soon. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, your head is in the stars and your feet are on the ground, but this outlook is working for you. Just do not live in fantasy land too long. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, just when you thought a relationship had gone as far as it could go, things start to change this week. Plenty of excitement is coming your way.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
