The Fabulous Heartbeats are on stage for the Town of Arnprior-sponsored Concert in the Park July 15. From left are Jean Coté, Richard Wills, Pat Hallett, Roddy McCann and Denny Wilbur. Concerts run every Sunday this summer at Robert Simpson Park.
The Fabulous Heartbeats rock Robert Simpson Park TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Concert in the Park attendees in Arnprior on Sunday went back in time to poodle skirts, bobby socks, bouffant hairdos and sideburns - the wonderful 1950s and 1960s. The Fabulous Heartbeats, a five-piece band specializing in nostalgic rock and roll music, performed under the pavilion at Robert Simpson Park on July 15.
Concert in the Park is an initiative of the town. Members of the Fabulous Heartbeats have been performing throughout the Ottawa Valley and the Outaouais for over 25 years. The musicians normally change costumes with each set, to go with the era and genre of music they are performing. However, with the hot and humid weather over the weekend, the guys dressed for the occasion - shorts
and T-shirts. The Fabulous Heartbeats executed two sets during the 2 to 4 p.m. concert, performing a medley of tunes as well as one set dedicated to the '50s and '60s legends who have passed on: Ritchie Valens, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Del Shannon and more. The group consists of Denny Welburn (lead guitar and vocals), Jean Coté (bass guitar and vocals), Richard Wills (drums & vo-
cals), Roddy McCann (saxophone and vocals) and Pat Hallett (rhythm guitar and vocals). During Concert in the Park this Sunday, July 22, Vicki Brittle performs. Following her are Glasstown on July 29, Danny Sylvester on Aug. 5, Simon Clarke on Aug. 12 and Kyle Felhaver on Aug. 19. In addition to the great music, Robert Simpson Park offers a supervised beach, splash pad, play structure and canteen.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The Canada 150 Rink from Parliament Hill could be moving to Arnprior. On July 9 council approved an application to the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ottawa International Hockey Festival (OIHF), which was due July 13, for a possible rink at the McLean Avenue Park. The town has been working with the Sens Foundation, Arnprior Optimist Club and M. Sullivan & Sons on an outdoor rink, that after much debate and a public vote was set to be built on Meehan Street near the downtown core. The OIHF approached the Sens Foundation about moving the rink within 200 kilometres of Ottawa and the foundation suggested Arnprior. If the town is successful, Arnprior would receive materials to create an 85by-200-foot rink as well as up to $150,000 for installation and site preparation and Plexiglas, benches and maybe even the scoreboard. Additional costs would total approximately $300,000. Officials do not know if there are 20 or 200 applications.
"It's an opportunity that we certainly want to take advantage of, it's not saying we will be successful but we have been talking about a similar project now for about a year back and forth and the public is well aware of it and we think it will be a great addition to the town," said Mayor David Reid. "And to be able to meet the criteria for the application in terms of timelines and risk we felt that the McLean ball diamond was the best area and it also fits in with the recreation master plan and some of the ideas to transform that recreation facility over the years, so it should be good, hopefully we will be lucky." The mayor and staff admit downtown is still the preferred location. However, there have been a few issues with that location. "There's some concerns with (Meehan Street) being a former railway that there could be contaminated soil as a result of that former use and that raises some flags that we have to deal with the Ministry of the Environment as far as their regulations go for soils in different areas for parkland," said Robin Paquette, Arnprior town planner. "And those are the kind of
things that happen when you are changing from a use that might have potential contamination to children playing on the ground." She also explained when they are creating a trail there were no issues with the ministry however when it changes to an active park they were required to enter into further discussions with the ministry and CP Rail. Reeve Walter Stack admitted this was his second choice. "The Canada 150 Rink is an opportunity we can't pass up," said Stack. "It's a good best second choice because the facilities are there." The selection process is to be completed in mid-August and the OIHF would also pay for any associated delivery costs. There were some concerns by council for making such a quick decision on the location after the town survey and it was suggested a letter to go out in the neighbourhood surrounding the park. If the Canada 150 Rink application is not successful the plan is to still try and use the Meehan Street location.

The McLean Avenue Park has been suggested as a new location for an outdoor skating rink in Arnprior. On July 9, the town has approved an application for the former Canada 150 Parliament Hill for Arnprior and council has selected this location if they are successfully in their application.

Almonte hosts NHLers wedding
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com One of the Ottawa Valley's favourite hockey players got married last weekend and he kept it local. Former Ottawa Senator Marc Methot, now a defenceman for the Dallas Stars, was in the area for his big day. Marc and Ellie Methot were wed on Friday, July 6 at Evermore Weddings and Events in Almonte. Marc's parents Al and Betty Methot live near Renfrew, in Horton Township on the Ottawa River. Betty was happy the heat wave broke just in time for the wedding. "We managed to get a perfect day, not too hot," said the mother of the groom. "It was breezy and warm."
Betty was very impressed with the location. "It was beautiful, they looked after everyone super and the food was wonderful," said Betty. "The couple just liked the setting - it is very pretty and is the old Naismith Farm." Betty said they had lots of family and friends there with approximately 160 people attending. "They are very happy and excited to start married life," said Betty. "It was nice to be there because they had a civil wedding in Dallas in October. Now we got to celebrate the ceremony and have dinner with them but it just went so fast." Marc is Betty's oldest son. This past New Year's Eve, her youngest son got married. She praised both Marc and Ellie.
"They were gorgeous and Ellie looked beautiful, she was stunning," said Betty. The couple's sevenmonth-old son Jack was also there. "He was in a tux. He's our first grandson and he's such a cutie." Evermore is located at 4960 County Rd. 29 in Almonte and Rob Scribner, who partners with the wedding and events venue for the food from his restaurant Salt Dining Lounge, says this was not their first celebrity type wedding. "It was a great honour for our team at Evermore to host Ellie and Marc, they are a wonderful family," said "We are very thankful they chose us." He says their staff takes pride in whoever they serve but admits they were

"There would have been a pretty good hockey team and I wouldn't want to play shinny against them," said Scribner. "We had fun and
they were all so classy." On a personal note Scribner says Marc has been a great role model to his son over the years after getting to know him socially at his restaurant.
"It's just nice when they use their celebrity in a positive way, he's a good guy!" He did admit he missed him playing for the Senators - a sentiment shared by many no doubt.

Water main to be repaired during 2019 Renfrew County construction TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com The Madawaska Bridge is 44 years old and with upcoming construction the width of the sidewalks will be staying the same. Renfrew County is in the planning stages for planned 2019/2020 construction on the bridge. In April the county presented three options to the town in regards to sidewalk repairs. On July 9 council approved option No. 1: Status quo, replacing the existing 1.5m sidewalks with new 1.5m wide sidewalks at no cost to the town. Staff recommended option two, which would have seen two metre wide side-
walks on both sides, costing the town $310,000. Coun. Lynn Grinstead wanted a larger sidewalk to make it a 'safer environment for all.' Reeve Walter Stack did not think the $310,000 'brings us good value.' Council were in favour of the town proceeding with necessary water main repairs beneath east and west approach slabs of the bridge at an estimated cost of $175,000. Appeal The Environment and Land Tribunals of Ontario have declared Russ Corbett's challenge to the Grove Nursing Home expansion valid. A case management conference will be held on Oct. 11 at 10 a.m., at the Arnprior municipal building. Corbett expressed his concerns with the plans during an April meeting; he says it will have a major impact on birds, the environment and the ecology of the forest. Program review Staff announced a review
of programs at the Nick Smith Centre with the goal to report back to council in fall of this year. The working group is comprised of 12 staff members and Mayor David Reid suggested they look at adding a representative from McNab/Braeside, which also contributes to the recreation centre. John Steckly, general manager operations and Jennifer Morawiec, general manager client services/ treasurer, are spearheading the review. "Everything is on the table," said Steckly. "All ideas, suggestions, thoughts are welcome. At this point we want everyone's opinion." The mandate of the working group is to review the Nick Smith Centre in totality to determine what programming and operations improvements could be put in place to improve the client experience. They will also be conducting surveys both online and in paper format. Funding
Two community improvement project (CIP) grants were approved - the first at 26 Elgin St. (2 Grands) for $102 for façade improvements. It was also noted this is their third CIP grant. And 10 Elgin St. (H&R Block) will receive $311 to assist them in painting the façade. Coun. Frank Dugal asked why each only received 25 per cent of the funding when the cap was 50 per cent. "He wasted more time and he's only getting $100," said Dugal. Staff and other councillors explained this is how the program was set up and there is a maximum up to $5,000. Applicants are also told when filling out paper work the standard is 25 per cent. There is still $14,5887 left in the CIP fund. Council also approved a $3,000 grant for the NeighbourLink Fountain, the same amount they received last year from the town. They had asked for $5,000.

Ed Reid was a young boy when his beloved granny Lillian Reid was stricken with dementia — and life for the entire Reid family was forever changed. The Reids were a close-knit clan, all living within a few blocks of one another. Originally a farming family from Carp, the Reids relocated to Arnprior when Ed’s father and Uncle bought a car dealership. Ed and his cousins would troop to their grandma’s house for lunch every day. For many years, it was an idyllic Walton family kind of life, with Granny Reid at the centre. But in her late 50s, Lillian started to change. “She slept a lot,” recalls Ed. Gradually, she began to forget. In the early stages of the disease, Lillian was fortunate. Someone was always there to help her and she was able to remain in her home. But as the dementia progressed, the family could no longer care for her safely. With no long-term care home in Arnprior, the heartwrenching decision was made to admit lovely Lillian to an Extendicare facility in Ottawa. “It was devastating” recalls Ed. Instead of seeing Granny once or twice a day, it might be months before the family could travel to Ottawa. Several times a year the family brought Lillian home from Ottawa to visit. In the end, however, her dementia made even these visits impossible. Lillian lived out the rest of her life – 20 long years – away from her loved ones in Ottawa, and passed away there in 1987. How differently Lillian Reid’s story might have ended had there been a place where Lillian could live in her own community — a place like The Grove — close to her family, her church and everything familiar. The Reid Family Built with community funds in 1981, The Grove currently operates at $250,000 a year above the government funding it receives, funding that will run out in 2025. “If The Grove doesn’t meet the standards, it will be shut down,” says Ed, who is co-chair of the Capital Campaign Committee. “We can’t allow that to happen, especially with our seniors’ population at 62%.” A bigger, better long-term care home that will meet the needs of a growing, aging population is a community resource that Arnprior can’t afford to lose. “Having a larger, more modern dementia-friendly facility would be amazing,” says Ed. “It would improve life for the residents who are already living there, and it would make families so much more comfortable knowing there is a wonderful place for their loved ones to go if a move becomes necessary.” Ed organizes The Valley Has Heart charity golf fundraiser every year and, when he switched the beneficiary from the Ottawa Heart Institute to The Grove — a local treasure in the woods — “everyone was ecstatic,” he says. “Having a long-term care home in Arnprior is important to me,” says Ed, “and it should be important to every member of our community.” Contact us to find out how you can be a part of the Come Home to Great Care Campaign.

OPINION
• EDITORIAL •
Time's running out With just over a week remaining to file papers for this fall's municipal and school board elections, time is running out for candidates looking to be on the ballot. The deadline is July 27 at 2 p.m., which has been shortened by 120 days from the previous campaign period of Jan. 1 to the second Friday in September. These changes, along with a requirement for each candidate to collect 25 signatures from residents in municipalities with a population of more than 4,000 before filing their papers, were made in 2018 in an effort for the election process to be more transparent. Since the campaign period began on May 1, our local municipalities have seen quite a few candidates file their papers to run for their respective councils, including many newcomers. It's always encouraging to see new faces make the decision to sit on council and school boards and affect change at the local level. We need that mix of experience and new faces to infuse fresh ideas and a creative outlook on how to solve problems. Often it can be a thankless job with long hours, low pay and much criticism, but it can also be enriching. Having a say in writing your municipality's history is rewarding and making tough decisions on the future growth and development of an area isn't something to be taken lightly. It isn't always about cutting the ribbon at business openings or presenting awards, but determining whether things such as large scale developments, pesticide spraying on roadways or the revitalization of a downtown core are the right fit for a community. It's not an easy task; we know because we see those representatives debating around the table each week while covering council sessions. We witness the spirited, sometimes heated discussions as council members try to come to a consensus on a contentious issue. We will always need people to step up and take on these roles and applaud all of those who continue to serve their communities, both past and present. Municipal elections have always been an exciting time for our newspapers and we look forward to profiling the candidates in each of our areas to provide readers with some food for thought as they prepare to head to the polls Oct. 22.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Scalpers score big with Ford To the editor: Upon recent inauguration as the new Progressive Conservative Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford has promised to lead the first ever true Government of the People. His first enacted policies however have not served the broad mass of Ontarians so much as a fraction or even a sliver of the people. One example that escaped much attention is the premier's suspension of antiscalping regulations installed by the previous government. Scalping is a market manipulation whereby online programs are used to masspurchase tickets for big sporting or concert events. After buying out tickets at massspeed and thereby monopolizing them, scalpers then resell tickets at severely inflated
prices at the expense of the consumer. In response to this practice, the now-suspended provisions of the Ticket Sales Act had prohibited tickets from being resold at above 50 per cent of their original value. (Last year the Green party of Ontario adopted anti-scalping policies as well.) The PCs had previously alleged this law was not reasonably enforceable. But they betrayed their lack of self-confidence by hiding the decision from the public until it was announced by the bureaucracy One would think that "the People" would be more likely to be the Ontarians hoping to buy affordable tickets, as opposed to the obscure profiteers of cyber scamming. But unless the PCs pledge to bring in a new tougher anti-scalping law, it seems those wanting to see who will score big at the hockey games may instead see big scores against

The bus leaves at 6 a.m. and gets you downtown by 77:15 a.m., and returns at 4 p.m. in order to get you home by 55:15 p.m. (for details: http:// www.octranspo.com/routes/ rural_partners_classic_alliance_motorcoach#500). The cost in comparison to gas, parking as well as wear and tear on your car (not to men-
tion frayed nerves) is reasonable: only $9 each way (tickets are sold at Shoppers in Arnprior). A monthly pass is available for $325, available from the company (Classic Alliance Motorcoach), which also gives you full access to the OC Transpo system. Rather than dealing with a long and stressful drive, particularly during the winter, you can just sit back and relax, have a snooze, get caught up on personal or work emails, or even better take the opportunity to read one of those books you've been putting off for years - an added convenience is that the coach bus is bathroom-equipped! All in all a healthier and less expensive way to make the commute, not to mention that it's also environmentally friendly. See you on the bus! Bob Brossard Arnprior

Runtz recounts brush with raccoon family Few things are more enjoyable than launching a canoe at dawn and slowly paddling down a narrow, winding creek where every bend brings some new encounter with a living creature. That encounter might be a great blue heron launching itself from the shallows, loudly croaking its annoyance at being disturbed. Or it could be a belted kingfisher rattling a proclamation that it, too, is aware of an intruder entering its domain. Sometimes the encounter is a muskrat swimming across the
MICHAEL RUNTZ Column creek, towing a bouquet of long leaves that will serve as a meal inside its hidden den in the creek bank. Recently I paddled down a lovely creek and met all of the aforementioned. I also came across raccoons at two different locations along the waterway. The first one immediately spotted me and splashed out of
the shallows where it had been hunting frogs and other edible delights, quickly vanishing into the woods that bordered the creek. The other encounter consisted of a female with three young that seemed unaware of my presence as I quietly floated closer. I watched motionless for a few minutes as their handlike paws groped through the water in an effort to locate something edible. As is the case for most mammals, raccoon females are abandoned by the males after mating, and care for their offspring unassisted. When old enough, the young follow their mother to her favourite feeding areas. Just like

mom, their front paws are loaded with tactile sensory cells that allow them to identify food by touch. When raccoons grope the water with their paws, it is often thought they are washing their food before they eat it. They do not. I slowly and carefully tried to place my paddle across the gunwales before reaching for my camera. Unfortunately I wasn't careful enough, and a slight bang of wood on wood alerted the mother to my presence. She stood up and immediately began to growl. I froze, hoping she wouldn't see me. Meanwhile her three young scampered to safety, up a nearby tree. The youngsters, however, seemed not overly concerned, for they played with each other while their mother continued staring in my direction and growling. Whenever the mother raccoon looked up at her babies, I reached for my camera, and I froze when-

Eventually, I was able to reach it and got it into position, patiently waiting for the right moment to capture. It wasn't long in coming. One of the babies climbed down and snuggled up next to its mom, running its paws over her back and face as if to reassure her. One by one, its siblings climbed down, and
soon the whole family was reunited. I hoped they would continue foraging for food, but led by the mother, they slowly moved farther down the shoreline until they were out of sight. So I started paddling farther down the creek, focusing now on the abundant dragonflies flying over the water. Soon I was lost in a world of high-speed chases and intimate encounters. (ABMSH) is hosting their First Memorial Live Butterfly Release, to honour loved ones, takes flight at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19 in Robert Simpson Park. How does it work? You have the opportunity to purchase a monarch butterfly, between now and Aug. 10, at ABMSH's office located at 106 McGonigal St. W. - Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Upon introducing yourself at the official registration tent the day of the event (between 11 and 11:15 a.m.) you will receive your butterfly in a special designed container. When instructed everyone will release their butterfly, but not before making your own distinctive wish, sending it to your loved one in the wings of the monarch butterfly. The Legend according to an Indigenous legend, since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. According to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly
its freedom, the wish will be taken to your loved ones in the wings of the butterfly and be granted. This is a special fundraiser for Seniors at Home with 100 per cent of the proceeds going back to your Community Support Services Agency. Cost: One butterfly $25, two for $45, three for $70, four for $85 and five for $100. McNab/Braeside couple set for musical adventure of a lifetime SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com "Leaving our house, leaving it all behind. Going to travel the world and see what we can find." Lyrics from the song Gypsies by Nic & I Music, couldn't ring truer for Nicole Papousek - she's the 'Nic' - and Sky Papousek - he's the 'I' - that make up the McNab/Braeside-based duo that is set to host a CD release party July 21 in Renfrew. The married couple is fulfilling their call to flee the conventional. Having just released their first self-titled album, they plan to eventually take leave from their house, regular life, and established careers. The song continues: "Got a 40foot bus and a plan, going to travel all across this great land. Just me, her and the dogs, couple of guitars and all of our songs." And that's just what they're going to do. Cover art for the album is 'The Blues Bird,' a 20-year-old Blue Bird coach-bus that Sky, 32, and Nikki, 29, have converted into a fully functional, all-season, touring home. "Sky and Nikki are part of growing number of people today questioning and redefining living in the western world. Minimal living is what Sky has adapted with bus life. A completely self-contained home, The Blues Bird will also be the vehicle from which

they will actively tour and perform with very low overhead," says a press release. Nicole, a nurse, and Sky, a mechanic, are aiming to hit the road in spring 2019. "Hopefully our first trip will be to Nashville," says Nicole. Both Papouseks come from musical families. "Sky's formative years were influenced by the gospel music of his evangelical upbringing and his multi-instrumentalist blues musician father, Jerry. Sky's mother, Debbie, a pianist, ensured Sky was in piano lessons until he was 12," says the band biography. "His parent's ever-present source of encouragement helped foster his musical interests and he started writing songs after he went from bass to guitar. Slide guitar and harmonica followed and he has evolved into a gifted, prolific songwriter." Nicole's upbringing was equally soaked in song. "Nikki's father Randy Best was a member of the Silver Eagle Band, a well-known active touring country act based out of Lindsay, Ontario. Nikki became steeped in classic country," says the bio. "Exposed to a wealth of musical talent and live music, she began to sing onstage at country jamborees from her early school age years and into her teens." The couple's talents play well with each other. "Nikki's rich, powerful, and
sometimes explosive vocals are informed by Etta James, LeAnn Rimes, Coco Taylor, and Patsy Cline," the bio continues. Promotion for Nic & I Music promises an engaging live set that can be at times intimate, candid, and accessible to audiences. "It's like a favourite side stage gig at a music festival where the set is like an informal 'hang' with friends that also happens to include a great soundtrack," says a press release. "To capture the essence of the song's live presentation feel, this new record also included traditional instrumentation performed through tube and valve amps and Nic & I Music's blend of male and female vocals, sung through classic microphones and recorded live off the floor at Old Church Recording, a studio house within a 126-year-old church." Having grown up in Lindsay, Nicole and Sky met while attending post-secondary school in Toronto. Her singing abilities melded nicely with Sky and his dad's jam sessions. "I started meeting people and one of my friends - Yan-nick Michaud - asked me if I would play at a funeral - he didn't know gospel music and I did. Then we started playing together," she said. After Michaud moved to Kingston, she and Sky decided to give it a go together. "That's how Nic & I Music got started," she said.

Nic & I Music, married musical duo Nicole and Sky Papousek, is set to host a CD release party July 21 in Renfrew. She's impressed with the area's talent. "The music scene here is incredible," she said. "There's probably only a handful of my friends who don't sing or play music." Fresh from playing at local musician Jordan Dubeau's release party, she can't say enough about his support. "My husband and I have learned so much from him and his sister, Kristy," said Nicole. Her advice to those wishing to pursue a career in music? "If your passion is music, the first thing to do is start singing at venues," she said. "Call venues and ask if they have availability, you'll get a spot. Try jamborees and little
festivals to get your name out there." Writing is underway for their second studio album with plans to expand upon arrangements. Check out Nic & I Music on Saturday, July 21 at 8 p.m. at The Rocky Mountain House in Renfrew. The show will also feature special guests Jordan Dubeau, The Dougherty Sisters and Jerry Papousek. Nic & I Music will be at Lumbertown Ale in Arnprior on Saturday, Aug. 4. Following the release party, CDs and download cards will be available at Mill Music in Renfrew, as well as through the Nic & I Music Facebook page.

Arnprior's David Silye to attend U.S. university on hockey scholarship DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The vast majority of elite hockey players in the Ottawa area want to play AAA junior, preferably in the Ontario Hockey League. Not David Silye. From a young age the Arnprior native knew he wanted to go the university route, getting his studies paid for while playing the sport he loves. He hoped to go to school in the U.S., preferably at one of the top post-secondary institutions in the country. He has reached that goal when Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., announced that Silye will be attending. "It's always nice to see a
kid reach his goals after putting in so much hard work," said his father, Jim Silye, who still holds a CFL record for most punt returns (123) with the Calgary Stampeders. "I'm a big champion of kids from the (Ottawa) Valley who do well in sports, because we got a lot of them. We have some of the best athletes around." Silye will have 80 per cent of his university paid for. U.S. universities are considerably more expensive than their Canadian counterparts; Clarkson costs about $46,000 per year. If Silye scores more than 50 points in the NCAA Division 1 league, 100 per cent will be paid by Clarkson. The Arnprior District
High School graduate, played AAA with the Ottawa Valley Titans before switching to the Kanata Lasers, then two years with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. He'll play with the Penticton Vees in the same league this year before heading back east to attend Clarkson. Other Arnprior players about the same age, include Liam Hawell, who attended his second Dallas Stars training camp after another successful season in the OHL, and Ryland Mosley, who played last year with the Carleton Place junior team. Mosley will be in Sochi, Russia in August for the upcoming Junior Club Sirius World Cup.

WENDY TESSIER July is a blast ... furnace, that is! But that didn't stop the intrepid golfers at Mountain Creek Golf Course who, on July 1, ate up that heat, quite a change from last year's near flood! The team of Bob and Marg Pountney, Cliff and Leeann Andree won the scramble. A little heat and humidity didn't deter the men either. On July 8, the Mountain Creek 2018 Men's OVGA Intersectional Team prevailed with 34 points, second was host Hammond (31), Cedarhill third (28) and fourth was Upper Canada (27). Congratulations
to Jeff Needham, Paul Petrie, Steve Murray, Eric Irons, Chris Stacey, Geoff Major, Sean Rousselle, Wayne Deschamps, Gregory Schaepper (six points), Eric Cormier, Justin deVroome and Shane Fagan. In the wings: July 15 - Ladies' 2018 Intersectional Team will play at Morrisburg: Lana Grenier, Wendy Tessier, Linda Mulligan, Lenora Homulos, Karen Buckle, Marlene Nevins, Denise Rousselle and Gail Frewen (alternate). Men's Night winners were Flight 1: Steve Murray. Mike Newton in Flight 2. Flight 3 won by Jim Colborne. Gord Clark won Flight 4. Skins Winners were A
and B level: Steve Murray, Geoff Major, Shane Fagan and Glenn Wilson; C and D: Mike Newton - 2, Randy Cayer and Denis Tessier; Seniors: Frank Arecchi won the only skin. Closest to the Hole on No. 3 Matt deVroome and on Hole No. 7, Larry Bertrand. Shane Fagan had the longest putt on Hole No. 9. It was hot as hell but a devilish good time was had by the 21 senior league golfers who participated in a nine-hole shotgun modified scramble on July 4. Ladies' winners: Andree Nadeau (net 32) and Bev McAskin (net 33) while the men's honours went to Doug Archibald (28) and Dennis Riopelle
(net 29.5). Thirty-one ladies faced the blast furnace to play the first Tuesday in July Ladies' Night. The winners were: • Red Tee Honey Pot - Arlene Watt, 42 points • Yellow Tee Honey Pot, a tie: Franci Schaepper and Andree Nadeau - 41 points each • Pro Shop Draw - Molly Collins
• Longest drive on No. 1 yellow tee, Linda Mulligan and red tee, Marlene Nevins And this hot tamale was definitely on fire: Peggy Gray scored a hole in one on par 3, Hole No. 3. Missed last month but must be mentioned now: on a windy, rainy men's night, Jim Grenier aced Hole No. 3 on the June 14 Men's Night.

July's a blast at Mountain Creek
WHAT’S ON
Family, friends remember Grace Glofcheskie with tournament SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com It's a special family's way to remember a special member of its clan. The third annual Grace Olivia Glofcheskie Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Sand Point Golf Course. Opening ceremonies will be held before the 1 p.m. shotgun start. "Each year, this tournament raises funds to support the Arnprior community and programming that Grace valued in her life before being killed in a hit and run in 2015," says an event press release. "We have been able to support various local schools, sports teams, community projects, and create graduation scholarship awards." Glofcheskie, a graduate of Arnprior District High School, was an avid golfer, bright academic and a loving woman, say her family and friends.
Having completed her master's degree at the University of Guelph, she was in the city to say goodbye to friends when she was struck and killed by a man driving a stolen vehicle. The Glofcheskies are extremely grateful for the caring and support they've received. "We rely heavily on the Arnprior and surrounding communities each year - we have been graciously supported with raffle and cake walk donations for the two previous years." If you wish to donate, send an email to r.glofcheskie@hotmail.com. "If any businesses would like to make a donation or a monetary gift, it would be much appreciated. Please call 613-623-6536 and we will gladly arrange pick up," says the release. "If you are not a golfer, consider coming to share memories of Grace. Register for the dinner only. A great raffle table will be part of the fun."

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The Ottawa psychiatrist with a passion for improving access to psychiatric care and building mental health-care capacity among primary care providers will be offering telehealth (video conferencing) clinics, beginning in late June. "Access to psychiatric services remains an ongoing challenge in more rural areas," says Dr. Mirzaei. "Using telemedicine allows patients to have timely access to psychiatric consultation within their own community." Dr. Mirazaei, who offers expertise in mood and anxiety disorders and women's mental health, will also provide primary care providers and allied health professionals with access to psychiatric advice and education sessions on various psychiatric topics. "Primary care providers, such as family physicians and nurse practitioners, are often the first point of contact for those seeking care for mental health issues," she explains. "These clinics will

OPG IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TO PROTECT ONTARIO’S BIODIVERSITY. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is conducting research in the vicinity of its hydroelectric generating stations on the Ottawa River. This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk. Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as they complete day and nighttime fish abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This annual research is conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13), under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of October.
