MORE TOWN, TOWNSHIP CANDIDATES FILE AS DEADLINE NEARS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The municipal election race is heating up in Arnprior and there are now enough candidates to fill up McNab/Braeside council. Chris Toner, Geoffrey White and Andrew Fogarasi in Arnprior and incumbents Brian Armsden and Heather Lang in McNab/ Braeside are the latest hopefuls to file their papers. The deadline for candidates to sign up for the Oct. 22 municipal election is this Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Toner, well-known for his community work with the Arnprior Optimists Club, became on July 20 the fifth candidate to run for the five councillor seats in
town. The landscaping businessowner joins Glenn Miller and incumbents Ted Strike, Frank Dugal and Tom Burnette on the ballot. Another incumbent councillor, Dan Lynch, is running for council's county councillor representative position being vacated by Walter Stack. (The term reeve will be dropped.) Stack is running to replace Mayor David Reid who is not running again. Firsttime candidate Gabriel Flowers is challenging the veteran Stack for the mayor's post. The last incumbent, Lynn Grinstead, is expected to file this week. In McNab/Braeside, Armsden filed on July 6 to run for his current position
as deputy mayor. Incumbent Lang became the third candidate for councillor, joining another returnee Scott Brum and newcomer Oliver Jacob, a student activist and former member of the provincial Minister's Student Advisory Council. With incumbent Tom Peckett running for mayor, the entry of Armsden and Lang in the contest makes for five candidates for the five available positions on McNab-Braeside council as of Monday afternoon. No one else signed up to run for mayor. Mark MacKenzie is not expected to run again. Andy Bray, who has been a trustee for 34 years, is running again for the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board to represent Arnprior, McNabBraeside and Great Madawaska. No one has so far filed to become the area's public board trustee. Colette Stitt is running again to be trustee on the French public school board. FIRE DEPARTMENT, MNR HANDLE BUSH BLAZE NEAR CALABOGIE Emergency officials made quick work of a July 17 bush fire in Greater Madawaska. Members of the Greater Madawaska Fire Department were able to leave the scene near Calabogie just after 2 p.m. Ministry of Natural Resources officials continued to fight the blaze, announcing the next day that the fire was under control. Capt. Leon Mulvihill said they got the call around 11:15 a.m. July 17 after someone reported seeing smoke in the wooded area between Calabogie Peaks and Ferguson Lake. Firefighters explored
the area to try and pinpoint where the fire was located and contacted Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) officials, who responded to the scene. "We called them because this is pretty much all Crown land," said Mulvihill, who noted there is a good possibility the fire, located in such a remote area not accessible by road, was sparked by a lightning strike. Members of the Greater Madawaska crew were stationed nearby, at the Mulvihill Construction gravel pit, until MNR arrived on scene working on
knocking down the fire. First a helicopter, then a spotter plane, then two water bombers responded. The planes were refilling at Calabogie Lake. In a post Wednesday morning, the Township of Greater Madawaska reminds residents that a Level 2 Fire Ban remains in effect. "Absolutely NO burning of any kind," including campfires and candles, the township notes. "Unusually dry conditions have raised the fire hazard index to extreme levels. Do not toss cigarette butts as a small spark is enough to ignite a fire."

FIRE BLACKENS 2 ACRES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com

Sunday's rainfall may have provided some relief for parched gardens and lawns, but it hasn't appreciably reduced the risk of bush and grass fires in the Upper Ottawa Valley. A fire that blackened about two acres at a farm on Nieman Drive southwest of Arnprior on the afternoon of Friday, July 20 showed just how quickly a grass fire can spread in the tinder dry fields. McNab/Braeside firefighters from all three of the township's stations rushed to the farm just off Russett Drive about 4 p.m. Fire chief Dave Hartwick confirmed the blaze started in a hay baler and spread to the tractor. By the time firefighters had extinguished the fire, it grown to cover two acres in the hay field. No one was injured in the fire, although Hartwick noted a few firefighters were checked by paramedics because of the intense heat. The firefighters spent about three hours dousing the hot spots in the 30-plus-degree temperatures. McNab/Braeside firefighters attended two other fires in the township Friday, a trailer fire in White Lake and a car fire in a field off Campbell Drive. Hartwick said on Sunday that
the bush and fields are still extremely dry, as "the rain did not help today." He emphasized that the fire ban on all open air burning (including campfires) in the township, declared July 5, remains in effect. Fire permits issued earlier are not valid in the ban period and no new permits are currently being approved. McNab/Braeside residents can call 613-701-6148 for updates. A Level 2 Fire Ban is in place all across the Ottawa Valley. A Nieman Road resident, who dropped by Friday's fire to see if neighbours could do anything to help, said she had seen, to her disgust, a motorist recently throw a cigarette butt from his car window. "Please don't throw cigarette butts out the window," urged Hartwick. He also asked residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms and a home escape plan. About the same time as the Neiman Drive fire, Whitewater Region firefighters were called to a brush fire on Magnesium Road. There are three major forest fires burning in the north end of Renfrew County, one of which closed Highway 17 temporarily Friday afternoon and again Saturday. Fire crews are also fighting three blazes in Algonquin Park.

'TASTE' LINK-UP GIVES HERBFEST A VALLEY FLAVOUR WABA COTTAGE AND GARDENS IN WHITE LAKE WILL HAVE A GREATER RENFREW COUNTY FLAVOUR JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com This Sunday's Herbfest at the Waba Cottage and Gardens in White Lake will have a greater Renfrew county flavour as the event has hooked up with Taste of the Valley. Admission is free to the celebration of herbs and healthy living scheduled for Sunday, July 29 from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. It's the third time the festival is being held in McNab/Braeside after 20 years in the Almonte area, but it's the first time it has become a Taste of the Valley event. Taste of the Valley with its promotion of local food producers and artisans fits in well with the Herbfest's focus on healthy lifestyle, said McNab/Braeside recreation director Geoff Patterson. "It gives us a different slant ... with new networking opportunities and more involvement from other spots in the Valley. It's a real feather in our cap." He said the addition of Renfrew County exhibitors

NOTICE OF APPLICATIONS AND PUBLIC MEETING In the matter of Sections 17, and 22 of the Planning Act, the Township of McNab/Braeside hereby gives NOTICE OF THE FOLLOWING: i) Application to amend the Official Plan of the Township of McNab/Braeside. ii) A public meeting regarding applications for amendments to the Official Plan of the Township of McNab/Braeside. Subject Lands
Part of Lots 9, 10 & 11, Concessions B and C, geographic Township of McNab, in the Township of McNab/Braeside, as shown on the attached Key Map.
Public Meeting
A public meeting to inform the public of the proposed official plan amendment will be held on Tuesday August 14, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. at the municipal office of the Township of McNab/Braeside.
Proposed Official Plan The purpose and effect of the proposed Official Plan amendment is to re-designate the subject lands from the Industrial Designation to a Rural-Exception Designation. The Rural–Exception designation would permit future residential development.
the Valley partnership capitalizes on the trend toward healthier living, so is "a win-win for both McNabBraeside and Renfrew County." He said the event has been growing slowly in its new location, attracting 600 people in 2016 and about 800 last year. Considering Taste of the Valley events have drawn as many as 2,000 attendees, Herbfest organizers anticipate reaching the 1,000 mark this year, he noted. Patterson said having Herbfest Taste of the Valley at Waba promotes awareness of the museum and gardens. Special interactive heritage presentations by staff and pontoon
boat tours on the lake throughout the day will give visitors a taste of how wide a range of amenities are available in the area, he explained. As well as a variety of herb and artisan vendors and displays, the festival will include children's activities, music and garden tours. Last year there were attendees from as far away as Europe and many from the United States. Patterson noted that volunteers have made a "key contribution" to the festival by weeding and sprucing up the grounds. McNab/Braeside firefighters have been working on a memorial garden near the
entrance, he added. "They'll have it looking like a million bucks by Sunday," he promised. Patterson is optimistic the weather will co-operate Sunday. Herbfest founder Gerry Bedard chose the last Sunday in July for the festival when his scientific research indicated it has the best chance of sunny weather of any weekend in the year. That has been the case for 20 of 22 Herbfests, noted Patterson. Herbfest kicks off the Taste in the Valley series, which includes events in Barry's Bay Aug. 17, Renfrew Sept. 22, Deep River Sept. 29, downtown Arnprior Sept. 30 and Cobden Oct. 13.
Additional information regarding the Official Plan amendment is available for inspection at the Township of McNab/Braeside municipal office during regular office hours. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Township of McNab/Braeside before the proposed Official Plan amendment is adopted by the Township, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the County of Renfrew (approval authority), to the Ontario Municipal Board. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Township of McNab/Braeside before the proposed Official Plan amendment is adopted by the Township, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or the public body as a party. OPINION EDITORIAL

THE HEAT IS ON While finally this week's forecast looks like we might see some reprieve from the hot, dry conditions that have been plaguing our region for weeks, it's important we remain vigilant and keep in mind the very wise warnings coming from emergency officials across the Valley. Weeks of little to no rain and the hot, sunny weather have led to tinder-dry conditions. Fire bans are in place in a number of municipalities. Whether it's last week's bush fire in Calabogie, field fire in McNab/Braeside or the major forest fire between Deep River and Mattawa that closed Highway 17 several times, firefighters and other emergency personnel have been working around the clock. And what they need, along with just plain public common sense, is for us to be careful and safe and ensure we prevent fires, as well as not hamper their efforts. The Arnprior Fire Department issued a reminder about the increased potential for fires to start and grow rapidly, telling residents it's imperative that smoking materials be discarded safely. Discarding cigarette butts in planter boxes or off the side of your deck can result in a large, destructive fire not only on your property but on your neighbours' properties as well. McNab/Braeside issued an online reminder about public behaviour around water bombers, often used by Ministry of Natural Resources officials to fight forest fires. "When water bombers approach a lake, move close to the shore so the water bombers can perform their scoop safely," said the message. "A water bomber will not scoop from a lake if encroaching watercraft pose a safety hazard." Greater Madawaska Fire Department's warnings indicated a considerable amount of rain is required to improve the dry conditions. Not only is no burning permitted, including campfires, candles or any other open flames, conditions are so extreme that caution should be exercised even while barbecuing. Fort McMurray, Alta., is still rebuilding two years after its devastating wildfires and July 7 marked the one-year anniversary of the start of the British Columbia wildfires. It's much easier to focus on preventing massive wildfires than to fight them and work for years to rebuild and restore. When a wildfire does occur, FirstOnSite Restoration, a company that has been on the front lines of some of the country's biggest fires, has these tips for homeowners: Create a 10-metre defensible space around your property; make your roof fire-resistant and clear away gutter debris; keep embers out; remove close-by coniferous trees; prune your trees; keep your lawn mowed; create a "bug-out" bag and an action/evacuation plan; find a "fire-resistant zone" near your home; work with your neighbours; and ensure you have adequate insurance coverage Finally, we are eternally grateful to those who have been working so hard these past few weeks in these extreme conditions. Hats off to the many emergency officials across our region who day after day put their lives on the line to keep us safe. To check on the current fire situation, visit Ontario.ca/ forestfires.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ORGAN DONOR REGISTRY TOPS 4 MILLION To the editor: Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario's government agency responsible for organ and tissue donation and transplantation, announced a milestone July 10: four million Ontarians have registered their consent to donate. Ontario reached this achievement fittingly during BeADonor Month in April - a month devoted to celebrating and raising awareness for organ and tissue donation. This past BeADonor Month was incredibly successful, with a 24 per cent increase in new registrations over an average month in 2017. In large part, this was owing to Ontario's overwhelming response to the Humboldt, Saskatchewan tragedy and Logan Boulet's life-saving gift. Moved and inspired by his generous act, thousands of Ontarians became registered donors. Renfrew has made considerable contributions in increasing the provincial
registration rate. In fact, it is among the top 10 per cent most improved communities. Since 2012, Renfrew's registration rate has risen from 15 per cent to 35 per cent today. Donor registration has been proven to save lives. Families overwhelmingly honour their loved ones' decision to donate organs and tissue at end of life, when they are registered. In the absence of registration, families consent to organ donation only half of the time. This milestone is also a testament to the strong partnership between Trillium Gift of Life Network and ServiceOntario. Ontarians are offered the opportunity to register consent to donate when renewing a health card or driver's licence. This interaction is fundamental to the donation system because being asked by front-line staff to register consent accounts for 90 per cent of new donor registrations. While the vast majority of Ontarians support organ and tissue donation, only one in three have registered their consent to do-
nate. Northern Ontario has set the bar with 49 per cent of the eligible population registered. SOME WILDFLOWERS DISPLAY LETHAL BEAUTY MICHAEL RUNTZ WRITES ABOUT SUMMER WILDFLOWERS
the five cups adorning each bloom is delicious amino acid-rich nectar. Because the nectar rests in shallow cups a diversity of mouthpart types can access it. Beetles with short tongues can enjoy it as easily as butterflies with garden-hose proboscises. But the milkweed offerings come with a price. The cups are slippery so an insect visitor has to keep positioning its legs to get a better foothold as it drinks. Between the nectar cups are situated anther pouches with slits into which a visitor's legs inevitably slide. At the bottom lie paired pollen sacs that to me resemble saddlebags in western movies. When a foot touches the strap of the sacs, it becomes ensnared. It takes considerable strength to pull a burdened leg free, which large bees do rather easily. When a saddlebag-bearing foot slips into an anther pouch that lacks pollen sacs, the saddlebag slips off and pollination is achieved. The system works well as long as the insect has the strength to pull free its saddled leg. When one examines the blooms on a milkweed plant, one soon finds victims, some dead, others vainly struggling to free themselves, that did not. One also finds dismembered legs still laden with their pollen cargo; there is severe penalty for those who come to drink the milkweed's nectar but fail to pay the price of admission. Visiting a common milkweed is like going to a Cineplex; action abounds at every blossom. But please be aware of the X rating for sexual content and violence! Each season can be characterized by an array of natural history highlights. Winter brings chattering, seedeating finches and owls from the north. Fall arrives with an explosion of colour and the moans of desiring moose. Spring is alive with returning birds and a flourish of wildflowers in leafless woods. So what defines summer? Summer's heat, fortunately usually much less extreme than this year's pond-drying, plant-killing inferno, inspires squadrons of dragonflies to patrol the air and waves of butterflies to flutter across meadows. Summer also brings wildflowers that, unlike the spring ephemeras that hurriedly blanket hardwood hillsides before tree leaves open overhead, lazily frequent meadows where shade is never a concern. There, naturalized immigrants like chicory, Queen Anne's Lace, and viper's bugloss self-heal add colour and form to the open land. Mixed among them are native wildflowers such as spreading dogbane and black-eyed Susan. Whether native or alien, most wildflowers depend on insects to satisfy their sexual needs. Competition for pollinators is high with each species striving to attract surrogate lovers through vibrant colours, irresistible perfumes, and sweet enticements. Some wildflowers appeal to a select few insects; bottle gentians are pollinated almost exclusively by bumblebees. Other wildflowers attract a diversity of insects ranging in size from tiny wasps to giant butterflies. Common milkweed is one of the latter. Even to our comparatively deadened discrimination of smell, the scent emanating from a large milkweed patch is near intoxicating. Insects of all type are drawn to milkweeds not only for their sweet scents. Inside

CRIME
YOUTHS CAUGHT VANDALIZING ARNPRIOR FAIRGROUNDS ARNPRIOR OPP Arnprior OPP had an active week investigating vandalism at the Arnprior Fairgrounds, aggressive salesmen at a restaurant parking lot and the theft of the Dairy Queen sign. On Sunday, July 22, at about 6:20 p.m., Arnprior OPP officers were alerted that six young people at the fairgrounds were damaging property. When officers arrived they found and detained two youths, who admitted they were responsible. The other four youths were also identified. The six will be dealt with through the extrajudicial measures
program. OPP Const. Kayla Couture led the investigation Police are investigating the theft of liquor from the Arnprior and Renfrew LCBO stores on Monday, July 16, and the Arnprior Dairy Queen sign overnight on July 15-16. On Sunday, July 22, at 9:50 a.m., Arnprior OPP officers responded to a Tim Hortons parking lot to investigate two men allegedly trying to sell gold jewelry from a car. The suspects were located and charged with aggressive solicitation under the Safe Streets Act. OPP Const. Childerhose led the investigation.
TRAFFIC CHARGES On Thursday, July 19, at about 6:30 p.m., Arnprior OPP officers responded to a driving complaint on Daniel Street North in regards to a vehicle swerving and driving slowly. OPP Const. Erin Densmore located the suspect vehicle and driver on John Street near the hospital. A man was arrested for driving while disqualified. OPP allege he had been drinking and following breath tests at the detachment he was charged with care or control of a motor vehicle over 80 mg., driving while disqualified, three counts of breach of a recognizance, driving while

under suspension and driving a motor vehicle with open alcohol. Ralph Pedley, 62, of McNab Braeside Township was held in custody for a bail hearing. On Sunday, July 22 at 12:20 a.m., OPP officers were conducting RIDE spot checks on Calabogie Road when they stopped a male driver suspected of drinking. The man was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the detachment for breath tests. Nicholas Monsour, 23, of Ottawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Aug. 15. A passenger in the vehicle, Andrew Benjamin, 35, of Ottawa was ticketed for having open alcohol in a public place. OPP Const. Jason Golds led the investigation.
WEDDING BANDS STOLEN OPP report at least three more homes, several vehicles, a warehouse and the LCBO store were victimized in Renfrew in mid-July. Wedding rings were the main items stolen in two break-ins. Jewelry, including several gold wedding bands, were stolen from a Barr Street home between July 5 and 20. The homeowners, who were in and out of the home during that time, noticed an open screen on a back window and a shoe print on a couch. OPP Const. Kirk Cullen is leading the investigation. A man's wedding ring was taken when a thief forced open a back door to a home on Ross Street on Friday, July 20. The robber also stole cash, a Bose wireless speaker, laptop and iPhone. OPP Const. Matt McLaren is investigating. OPP also report several thefts from vehicles in Renfrew last week. Police encourage motorists to remove valuables from their cars or trucks overnight, and to lock their vehicle when away from them. "Thieves are generally opportunists and target easy-to-access valuables," note OPP. "If your vehicle is locked, and they can't see anything of value they will usually move on. Don't be an easy target, Lock it or lose it!"

RENFREW COUNTY GRAPPLES WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com They are the stats no one wants to talk about. A 2016 report put out by the Canadian government focuses in on the issue. Family violence: How big is the problem in Canada? Of all reported violent crime in 2016, more than one quarter resulted from family violence and almost 67 per cent of family violence victims were women and girls. Women are victims of intimate partner violence more often and more severely than men: 79 per cent of reported intimate partner violence is against women. In Arnprior-Renfrew, the OPP investigated 476 domestic dispute calls in 2016, 439 calls in 2017 and for the first six months of 2018, 207 calls were investigated. These calls are defined as an incident of violence or the threat of violence in a partnership that includes intimacy, dating or a previous relationship. Const. Janice Sawbridge, community safety officer, says despite the slight decrease, the num-
bers are high and concerning. It still breaks down to more than one a day. "That number does concern us. Domestic violence can very quickly escalate into a very serious incident. We are always concerned by the numbers and 439 is definitely a very high number for an entire year," said Sawbridge. If victims are fearful for their safety: Call the police (911). If they are not comfortable with calling the police at least reach out to someone such as a counsellor at Bernadette McCann women's shelter. Even though the physical building is in Pembroke it services all of Renfrew County and is available 24/7 It is a 16-bed emergency short-term shelter for women and children who are leaving an abusive relationship. It also offers a crisis/support line that can be reached 24/7: 1-800-2674930. In Arnprior/Renfrew, community support and outreach services can be reached by calling 1-888281-7377. Victims can also reach out to a regional assault care specialist at the hospi-

"They can offer support and guidance, as long as the victims are reaching out to somebody if they are ready to do that, I encourage them," said Sawbridge. "If they are fearful for safety, please call the police." Renfrew County Victim Services responds to calls with the police for domestic disturbances. "We provide immediate
crisis support to all victims of domestic violence," said Faye Cassista, acting executive director with victim services. "We offer a specialized program to offer immediate funds for certain situations." She feels victim services is an important resource for the community. "The victims have to know there is support here and the community cares and we are here for them no matter what they deicide to do," said Cassista. "If they go back we want to ensure they are safe in there." According to Sawbridge, high call volume is not just isolated to the rural areas. However, she notes there are special challenges for those who live in rural areas. "In accessing services, sometimes there is more poverty in rural areas. There may only be one vehicle, and if one of the partners takes the vehicle to work then the other person is almost stranded and has no way to drive to a hospital or a friend's house to seek support," said Sawbridge. "Again that is why I encourage people to make
that phone call to Bernadette McCann House or one of the other available agencies." Sawbridge is in her 30th year with the OPP and says the issue of domestic violence has stayed the same over the years. A victim will be abused at least nine times before they reach out for help. She says there are lots of complex reasons why victims don't seek help. "Victims still believe it's their fault, they provoked the incident of violence," said Sawbridge. "We will just keep working to educate people, especially young people (in schools)." The issue has seemed to hit home in Renfrew County since the trial and conviction of Basil Borutski, who was found guilty in December 2017 of two counts of first degree murder and one count of second-degree murder in Wilno. Sawbridge didn't discuss the case specifically but admitted one thing. "There was definitely a lot of awareness that came about as a result of that case." It's a tough situation when the police receive a
domestic disturbance call. "It's never easy when we get a call like that because it is very volatile and unpredictable," said Sawbridge. "We treat it very seriously and our No. 1 job is to ensure the safety of everyone when we arrive at the scene and determine what has happened. If we have grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred, whether that is assault, choked, threatened, property damage, we must lay a charge. No warnings are issued, we lay a charge." Of the instances investigated, more than 50 per cent of the time there are no charges laid. "And that's because no criminal offence has occurred, so generally it's just an argument that one person felt was getting out of control or someone not involved heard the argument and was concerned enough to call the police or someone has made an allegation but we don't have the grounds to lay the charge." She stresses one key message. "Seek help, that's the No. 1 thing I want them to do," said Sawbridge. "Talk to a friend, or family member, or doctor or police."

KNITTING HATED DISHCLOTHS WAS A TASK TO AVOID, COLUMNIST RECALLS Never ever, did I say to Mother, "I'm bored, and there's nothing to do" without her casting her eyes toward the back wall cupboard. All she had to do was look at it, and I knew what was in store for me. Only too well I knew she would say: "Get the string and knit a dishcloth." How I hated knitting dishcloths! First of all, I couldn't knit well. Not like my sister Audrey who could whip up a dishcloth in the blink of an eye, or knit a pair of socks in a couple of evenings. For me, the job of knitting a dishcloth was one I loathed, so I thought long and hard before I ever said to Mother I was bored and there was nothing to do! If my sister was too busy to play with me, or I couldn't talk my friend Vel-

ma into coming over to play, or it was too hot, or for some other reason, I was bored and couldn't think of a thing to do, the result of complaining to Mother was far worse than sitting in the swing in the grape arbour twiddling my thumbs. So that meant I had to dream up something in a hurry, or Mother would go to the cupboard for me and haul down the ball of string and the knitting needles. Sometimes I would drag all my dolls out to the grape arbour, and set them down in rows and pretend I was Miss Crosby from the Northcote School. Of course, one had to be bad Marguirite, and I wasn't above taking my ruler and slapping the little hand on the doll, which gave me great satisfaction. But

life out of her, she ran and hid when she saw me coming. Soon I would feel sorry for myself. There was Velma with a house full of sisters and brothers ... no time for her to be bored. And my other little friend Joyce ... she had a playhouse! Imagine! A playhouse! If I had one of those, I could spend hours pretending to bake cakes or sitting in the tiny little chair rocking my dolls to sleep. Just thinking of either Joyce or Velma only added to my misery. That's when I would drag myself back into the kitchen. And it didn't take Mother all day to figure out I was bored, and couldn't find anything to help pass

dearly. As soon as I picked her up, she would fall dead asleep, so other than stroke her warm, bare body, there wasn't much fun there. My sister Audrey and I often lay out on the grass when there were soft tufts of clouds in the sky and we would try to figure out what shape they were, or what they would turn into as they floated above us. Audrey was much smarter than I was at it though, so watching clouds alone held no interest for me at all. And then there was Scruff the old barn cat. She'd be good for a spell of something to do, but she was a cagey one all right, and ever since I dressed her up in some of my dolls' clothes, and scared the

talking to dolls who didn't answer me soon caused me to lose interest in playing school. So, unfortunately, I tired of pretending the grape arbour was a school, and I would gather up my dolls and head back into the house, being awfully careful not to let out a big sigh passing Mother because of the threat of her curing me of my boredom! Playing jacks on the cement at the pump wasn't nearly as much fun playing alone, as it would be with a friend, but that helped fill in the time for a bit. Then the day I lost the little red ball down the pump hole made me especially careful, and leery about the whole idea of going out and spending a bit of time playing jacks at the pump. I could always go find my pet chicken, but she did little to amuse me. She was an odd one all right. There wasn't a feather on her body ... as bald as a badger she was. My brother Emerson said she was a freak, but that made me love her more

We are truly grateful for the care provided by the Assisted Living Program. Kind, caring, and dedicated, only begin to describe these very special individuals. A special thank you to Anna, Susie, Margaret Ann, Cindy, Nancy, Joan and Debbie for your love and care. Together your help made it possible for Art to remain at home with Noreen, where he wanted to be. You were our aides, became our friends and we are forever indebted to you. To, Reverend Andrew Love our heartfelt appreciation for your visits, thoughtfulness, comforting words, guidance, and a truly beautiful and inspirational service. Thank you to the ladies of the UCW, Grace St Andrews United Church for providing friends and family with the delicious luncheon following the service. Our sincere thank you to Helen Black, organist, Mavis Lesway, Catherine Matheson and Katie McLachlan for the beautiful and meaningful music, our sincere thank you. To, the Arnprior Legion, Branch 174, for providing your military respects with a service on Monday. To, Lisa Smith and the staff of Boyce Funeral Home, our heartfelt appreciation for your support, compassion and professional guidance. Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece, If so we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, As any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all, Just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much what ever the part. It is so very hard to say goodbye to those we love. We cherish his love and hold his memory close within our hearts.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HONOUR CONTEST WINNERS Students from two local schools were celebrated this June for their entries in the annual Knights of Columbus (KoC) Substance Abuse Poster competition. Council 2082 held the annual contest and contest chair Darcy Fridgen and the Grand Knight Blaine Mullins visited the winning students to present them with their certificates and other winning items. The contest encourages all students of the eight-11 and 12-14 age groups to develop an original poster and slogan in the drug and alcohol abuse categories to discourage their peers from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Each participant that enters receives a Knights of Columbus certificate and winners receive a Knights of Columbus Winners certificate, a $50 monetary reward, and if the posters are picked to go beyond the local area, winners could possibly receive other awards. Through discussion and poster creation, the students learn and talk about substance abuse and its possible effects. "It's these students who make the substance abuse program so successful each and every year. It makes a huge difference to see the kids involved in these contests. It really brings home their thoughts and feelings of what the future effects of alcohol and drug abuse can possibly have on their friends and families, through the creation of their art, it's all about awareness," said Fridgen. First place winners in Arnprior are Anna Hirst and Meghan McAdam of St. Joseph's Catholic School, along with Ya Qi Zhang of St. John XXIII Catholic School. All three winners then moved on to the second level of the contest. In this level, all winning participants from councils throughout the Ottawa Valley have their posters submitted to their respective districts. Within the Pembroke Diocese, there are two districts. District 02 and District 44. At this point of the competition, District 44's Deputy Bob Coyne, to which Arnprior council participates, had Anna, Meghan and Ya Qi all take home winning medallions. Anna and Meghan both went on to the third level of competition. In this level all winners from the two districts are put together to compete for the winning categories within the Diocese of Pem-

Anna and Meghan took home plaques for winning at this level. Their posters were submitted to the next, Ontario State, level four of the contest. The Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2082 would like to congratulate all the winners this year and thank the schools, their administration, the judges and all the participants that took part in this years contest. We hope to see you all again next year. This article was submitted by the Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2082

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

A call has gone out for volunteers to help Ontario Parks officials work on trails at a "gem" of a provincial park in McNab/Braeside this Friday, July 27. Park rangers will be on site at Alexander Stewart Provincial Park starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to drop by at any time throughout the day to help with the rehabilitation of trails in the park bounded by Mill Ridge and Maple Bend roads and Russett Drive just east of the township office. McNab/Braeside Coun. Heather Lang explained that the effort is aimed at making the "little gem" of a park more user-friendly to residents and students from near-
by McNab Public School. Local firm Elm Enterprises has donated two tandem loads of gravel, which will be spread on the low spots on the trails, especially in the marshy area off Maple Bend Road. The organizers are also looking for donations of cedar logs and wood chips for the effort. Lang noted that the township and the Arnprior Fish and Game Club have been working with Ontario Parks on a vision for the park. Trails through the park's hardwood forest are still in a rough stage, although they have been used for snowshoe excursions for the past couple of winters, Lang explained that thanks to the generosity of a farmer who owns land between the park
and McNab school, students will access the park once the trails are upgraded. They will be able to use the area for a variety of purposes from nature study to cross-country running. Ontario Parks is planning a sign near the Mill Ridge main entrance promoting the park as well as an information board at the fork in the trails helping visitors identify trees and other park attractions. Eventually the plans will include a parking lot and secondary entrance on Maple Bend Road. Anyone volunteering to help Friday is asked to bring equipment such as shovels or wheel barrows and wear safety boots and bright clothing. The work party will begin near the corner of Russett Drive and Mill Ridge Road.

CALABOGIE SUMMER MARKET HAS COOL NEW HOME The Calabogie Summer Market is having fun in its new home. The market has permanently moved under the roof of the ice rink at the Community Center, 574 Mill St. The expanded space means more vendors, live music, and lots of
opportunity to mingle with friends and tourists. The open sides of the rink allow light, cool air and lots of shade. A recent Saturday saw 22 vendors and a big crowd of browsers. Calabogie's Long Lane Farms is there every week along with a
great selection of homemade and artisan products. Featured guest artisans change weekly. The market is every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Sept. 1. For more information or to be a guest artisan, contact calabogiemarket@gmail.com.

ARH: A Great Place to Work!
Did you know that at Arnprior Regional Health we’ve been recognized not only for the quality of patient care we provide, but also for the quality of our workplace? We offer the chance to make a difference in someone’s life every day, with rewarding career opportunities in an outstanding work environment where staff model the values of Honesty, Accountability, Respect and Teamwork in everything they do. “I’m very proud to work at ARH. The level of professionalism and our high standards are two of the main reasons I enjoy my job so much.” - Elaine, RN, Inpatient Unit “It’s nice working in a smaller environment that’s so warm and nurturing. We’re able to care for the residents like they’re our own family. And I feel like we’re not just helping our residents, but we’re really contributing to the community.” -Susie, Housekeeping, the Grove "The triage nurse, the receptionist, the doctor and the other staff were all kind, attentive and helpful. I never for a moment felt like a 'number' or just another patient but rather a fellow human being. Thank you.” - Patient, Emergency Department “I feel the Rehab program has set me on course to a healthy life style. Arnprior is fortunate to have such a dedicated team of young professionals running the program." - Patient, Rehab program

A HUGE thank you to Drs. Kiskis and Vilis
Although “thank you” seems insufficient to recognize all that Drs. John Kiskis (right) and Donna Vilis have done for the ARH community over the last 40+ years. As of August 1st, Drs. Kiskis and Vilis will be retiring from their rostered patients, who have been transferred to new physicians. The doctors will continue to hold hospital privileges at ARH and continue seeing their patients living in long-term care.
