DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The Arnprior Fair promises to go out (of town) with a bang. Twice as many rides, the return of a ferris wheel, a new flat fee structure, an iconic Canadian band, and the promise of animal rights protests are among the balls the fair board's new president, Brad Runtz, is juggling. For $20, visitors have access to the 15 midway rides and tons of entertainment; after Aug. 9 at noon, the price rises to $25. Kids are always free. Runtz is particularly excited to see Juno Award-winners Prism perform. He was born in the 1980s, so Runtz wasn't paying too much attention when "Don't Let Him Know" broke into the Amer-
ican Top 40 list, but it didn't take him long to catch up. "I YouTubed their songs and said, 'Oh yeah, I hear all these on CHEZ,'" he said. "There are two country music festivals the same weekend, so we are excited to bring a rock band in." Less exciting for him is the planned two-hour protest on Saturday at the fair. Animal rights activities oppose the inclusion of Papanack Zoo, where several videos surfaced in 2016 showing mistreatment by handlers. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigated but determined that there was not sufficient evidence to lay charges. Runtz doesn't know where the anticipated 10 to 15 protesters will be posted, but that it can't be on the fair-

He is also taking it in stride, saying protesters showed up in the past during the fair's stampede. "I've been informed of the protest and it's nothing new," Runtz said. "Everybody's entitled to their opinion." One of his favourite events is one that happens every year, when the general public is barred from entering the premises. The lights are turned off and the music and loud sounds are hushed, while people with special needs from across the national capital region enjoy a free
day at the fair. "The special needs morning, on Friday, is one of the main reasons why I joined the fair board," Runtz said. "We have over 500 registered and their supporters, and it really brings the community together." "To give back to the community like that is awesome." To register, email Sue Clark at suearnpriorfair@gmail.com. For more on this year's fair, the last before it moves to a yet-to-be-determined location in 2019, see www.arnpriorfair.ca.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Drivers are being warned about following too closely after a chain reaction multi-vehicle collision on Hwy. 17 just west of O’Brien Road early Monday afternoon snarled traffic. The highway was already congested with vacationers returning home after the long weekend when two separate crashes occurred. Renfrew OPP were investigating a rear-end collision in the eastbound lane on the hill just east of the Bonnechere River bridge about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 6 when between three and
five other vehicles collided as they approached the scene. A driver in the first collision was charged with following too closely, reports Renfrew OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge. Charges are pending in the second crash. Sawbridge urges motorists to pay attention to other traffic and leave plenty of room between them and the vehicles ahead. Because of the volume of traffic, Monday’s crash could have been caused by traffic suddenly slowing for the O’Brien light. It appears nobody was seriously injured, but at least two motorists were checked out by paramedics
for minor injuries and others were shaken up. Fortunately for one of the drivers caught up in the crash, her sister was following with a camper and was able to rescue her dog while she was being looked over by paramedics.

GROWTH TRIGGERS BURNSTOWN BUILDING SUPPLY REOPENING JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The decision to reopen and expand Burnstown Building Supply was based largely on the growing number of residential and business developments in the Renfrew-Arnprior area. A number of dignitaries at the Burnstown building centre's grand opening celebration Aug. 2 made mention of several major projects on the go and many more expected as the four-laning of Highway 17 extends through the area. Partners Bruce Gannon and Laurie Wichers-Schreur acquired the Castle Building Centres outlet last October from Glen and Joanne McLeod after they had closed it for health reasons. McLeod Building Supplies had been operating across the Madawaska River from Burnstown since 1989.
Gannon and Wichers-Schreur have been running the Renfrew Rona Castle outlet on Gillan Road as Wood Works of Renfrew since buying it from the Lockwood family in 2016. They reopened the Burnstown location on April 30 and held a grand opening event Aug. 2 to showcase the changes at the site. The retail area has doubled in size to about 4,800 sq. ft., the warehouse has been renovated, many new products have been added and the main building as been painted Castle blue. "The Renfrew store is very busy, so we felt a store was warranted on the south side of the Madawaska for the convenience of our customers in White Lake, Calabogie and all over McNab/ Braeside," said Gannon. He noted that the township has at least four major developments underway, so the need for building products is on the rise.
"The growth in the township is picking up every day," McNab/ Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett told the crowd gathered for the ribbon-cutting. "With 417 coming, we're expecting a lot more growth to come," he added. "So this building supply store is greatly needed." Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon noted there are 10,000 building starts within an hour's drive of the outlet. With already 14,000 vehicles a day on Hwy. 17 at the Calabogie Road intersection, the store is "ideally suited" to benefit from the new markets that will come when the highway is fourlaned, he said. "Thank you for your investment into our community."
Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy agreed that the "area will certainly be booming" with the coming of the Hwy. 17 four-laning and the new connector at Calabogie Road. After the ribbon-cutting, Wichers-Schreur announced that they are planning to open a "third location," a virtual store online where people can order items 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There will be 60,000 products available and orders will be delivered within a week, she said. The Burnstown store has already expanded its product base to cater needs of both permanent residents and cottagers, do-ityourselfers and professional contractors, said Gannon. For in-
stance, the outlet carries kayaks and canoes and other soft water sports items. Gannon said he is pleased the store features a mix of experienced and young staff that have "pulled together and really gelled ... making for a nice atmosphere." Wichers-Schreur thanked the many vendors on hand for the opening, saying "they have been a godsend as we started down this road." Castle's director of business development Bruce Holman thanked Gannon and WichersSchreur for reopening the store and adding the new product offerings. The outlet is typical of Castle's forte, which is serving rural communities, he said.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com A candidate in the Township of McNab/Braeside municipal race will be three provinces away should he win a seat on council. Oliver Jacob said a few people have asked him how he plans to attend various township meetings and service constituent needs if he will be a full-time student at university in Nova Scotia. The skepticism comes as no surprise to the political science and history student at Acadia University, but the plan is not that unrealistic given the advancements in technology. "I would need to be much more engaged in social media and pick up the slack that way," Jacob said. "So I would participate in meetings electronically. It's a system used in Nova Scotia for a few years now." More corporations hold meetings via teleconferencing, he said, as does the association of municipal clerks and others. Councillors away on vacation have also been known to join via Skype or another software program. He admits that bumping into constituents at the gas station, and hearing from elderly ones who don't go online will be difficult. Jacob hopes other councillors would take care of that side. He would connect better with younger constituents and those engaged in social media. Among his goals is to better inform youths about services and programs the township offers.

plaints from public. He enjoys finding solutions for residents. A longtime Liberal campaign volunteer, Jacob said he is guided by the party's values - such as government can be a force for good in citizens' lives - not any particular policy. Many wait until retirement, when they have more free time, before offering to sit on municipal council. The full-time student has calculated the number of hours he expects to need for reading reports, preparing questions, talking with constituents, and is reasonably certain he can pull it off.

OPP SURVEY SHOWS MAJORITY OF ONTARIANS FEEL VERY SAFE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The OPP has released results of a survey showing more than half of Ontarians feel "very safe" in their communities. Along with that group of
52 per cent of respondents, another 45.5 per cent feel "safe." Only about two per cent feel "unsafe" or "very unsafe." The annual survey by an outside company of 1,007 participants has a margin of error of no greater than plus or minus five
per cent, 19 times out of 20. Respondents from eastern Ontario and other areas felt significantly safer compared with those from the north, as do those living in OPP areas compared with those policed by municipal forces, the survey reveals.
"Policing is a commitment to serve and protect the fundamental rights of all people in this province," says OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes. "Each year, it is important for us to check in with Ontarians about how we're doing and assess our priorities for the future. We will continue to work diligently to meet the evolving needs of our communities." On response time to violent crime, positive opin-

ions dropped: just 27 per cent were very satisfied, and almost were 68 satisfied. On sensitivity toward victims of violent crime, it was similar: almost 21 per cent were very satisfied, 71 per cent were satisfied. Faye Cassista has been with Victim Services of Renfrew County for 16 years. She said she has a "very good" relationship with OPP, and is confident that it is meeting the needs of victims.
"I firmly believe that, locally, they are doing what they are supposed to be doing," Cassista said. "Victim services have improved tremendously over the years. There used to be people falling through the cracks. The overall survey doesn't surprise me." Along with violent crime and victim services, the survey dealt with OPP marine and ATV patrols, along with highway-related issues.

THE ENDANGERED RED KNOT IS FEEDING IN JAMES BAY
rarest of these being the Red Knot. Knots nest across the Arctic with one population, the rufa subspecies, critically endangered. There are only about 20,000 of this race left due to an 80% decline in their population in recent decades. The reasons for the dramatic decline aren't clear but habitat loss in their wintering grounds may be one reason, as is the degradation of stopover sites used in spring migration such as Chesapeake Bay in Massachusetts. The interest in Knots spans three countries in two continents. Research into their decline and movements involves capturing individuals and placing numbered colour tags on their legs. Some birds get equipped with tiny electronic devices that allow the tracking of their movements. My role in is to estimate their numbers passing through my group's assigned section of James Bay, and to record any tag number that can be read through a spotting scope. Millions of shorebirds depend on the health of James Bay's tidal flats in order to complete their migration. Despite the essential nature of this IBA, there are rumours that James Bay is being looked at as a potential site for hundreds, even thousands of power generating wind turbines. If this plan ever comes to fruition, it will likely spell the end of the line not only for Red Knots but also for many other species of migrating shorebirds. That thought gives me a very different kind of knot in my stomach. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca
DEREK DUNN Column
As you read this column I am looking at birds on the western coast of James Bay at a remote location called Longridge. Here, at low tide, along with a handful of other volunteers I am searching the mudflats for migrating shorebirds (sandpipers and plovers). While I am recording the numbers and species of every shorebird I see, in particular I am looking for an endangered species called the Red Knot. The Ontario coast of James Bay is known for providing habitat essential for the wellbeing of migrating shorebirds. Although two dozen species of sandpipers and plovers dot the bay's coastline in the hundreds of thousands during August, virtually none of them were present earlier in the year. Before they came to James Bay the shorebirds were in the Arctic on their nesting grounds. Currently, the birds are in their migration to South America where they will spend winter. The shorebirds stop along the coast to devour the myriad invertebrates living in the mud. The animals they eat are turned into fat, which is the fuel that powers their long journey south, a trip often accomplished in several days of nonstop flying. They arrive along the coast in flocks that can reach epic sizes, sometimes even tens of thousands. Sandpipers have been called "the wind birds" for the way their flocks dip and swirl, and for the great journeys they undergo in the air. About a dozen sandpiper species are regularly encountered, the

SLOW DOWN, ENJOY SUMMER Oh, those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer. Days full of carefree outings, beach parties, cold drinks, hot tunes, old friends, new acquaintances, summer romances. And all too often - because all the above can sidetrack drivers - carnage on our highways. Furthermore, today's light and peppy cars have far more bells and whistles to distract drivers. Add to that all the hand-held communication and entertainment devices that tend to dominate people's lives these days, and it's no wonder it takes a great deal of willpower not to be distracted. Then there's the perplexing need for so many motorists to rush to their destinations at warp speed. That's particularly difficult in the summer with the roads clogged with tourists and construction workers. Is it really worth a speeding ticket and the resultant rise in insurance costs, or if you're going fast enough, a stunt driving charge and all the inconvenience and expense that entails? As well as the negative publicity. That brings us to last week's report provided by they OPP, which disclosed that a local teen faces stunt driving charges and had his car impounded and driver's licence suspended for seven days. The report caused a mini-storm on social media with several posts questioning why the 17-year-old was named. As Renfrew OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge explains, the publication ban on names of juveniles facing charges has a different age limit for criminal and provincial offenses. Those under 18 charged with a criminal offense can't be named, while for those nabbed under a provincial statute such at the Highway Traffic, Liquor Control or Trespass to Property acts, the no-publish is for under-16s. The rationale: if you're old enough to drive, you're considered an adult and old enough to be named if charged. The newspaper understands it can be painful to the family for a teenager to be named publicly. It's not done out of spite, but because it can play an important deterrent role. If you're named then found innocent, let us know. We'll publish that too. We also realize there are various degrees of malfeasance: speeding because you're late for work is usually more understandable and less dangerous than street racing. However, the final outcome could be just as devastating. It's better to be late for work than not arrive at all because you've wrapped your car around a tree or even worse an innocent motorist's vehicle. Yet some drivers continue to tempt fate. Const. Sawbridge noted that police recently charged a young mother rushing to work with stunt driving - and she had her 4-yearold daughter in the back seat. More than 25 years later, a July collision on the outskirts of town that killed four young people is still seared into many Renfrewites' memories. As is the crash last October that killed two Renfrew Wolves hockey players. A teenaged Arnprior girl was killed while texting as she drove to work in 2010. Every year lives are lost because people aren't taking driving seriously enough. Conversely, it is hoped lives are saved because coverage, including naming those breaking the law, has made some drivers think twice when tempted by distractions while behind the wheel. And if your teens aren't paying attention, at least parents should be making the effort to be good role models. They have a responsibility to society, before they unleash their children on our highways, to impress on them that vehicles are not toys, but potentially lethal weapons. Weapons that can turn in an instance an idyllic summer day deadly.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY MCD'S SUSTAINABLE BEEF PROGRAM QUESTIONED To the Editor: I was rather underwhelmed by recent press regarding McDonald's starting to sell 'certified sustainable beef'. Claims that this is the first such program in the world don't bear much scrutiny. Having read the program production protocols, I can assure you they are considerably less rigorous than those I was meeting for the Scottish Farm Assurance program in the early 1990s. My experience with that program doesn't encourage me that there will be any benefit to Canadian cattle producers from this program in the long run. The Scottish model similarly encouraged early participation with the promise of market premiums, yet once a critical mass was achieved the premiums disappeared and anyone that wasn't 'Farm Assured' had their produce discounted in the marketplace. I predict Canada will
follow the same path as Scotland with the cattle producer left to shoulder the burden of ongoing costs and regulation to meet the standards in perpetuity for no financial benefit.
"I predict Canada will follow the same path as Scotland with the cattle producer left to shoulder the burden of ongoing costs." Iain Aitken With only $20 per head being used as the bait in the trap - and this being paid to the feedlot operator - the rancher likely won't get enough to buy a Big Mac the day he is in town selling his calves! What really rankles me
though, is that farmers and ranchers must be certified as having production practices attaining a certain level of environmental and operational sustainability - for McDonald's! The same McDonald's whose menu items are generally considered junk food contributing to the obesity epidemic and include a throw-away Chinese made plastic toy with every 'kids meal'? I'd like to know where the sustainability, environmental or otherwise, is in this case, and who is auditing them? I think the real driver of this program is fulfilling the desire of agri-food processors and retailers to environmentally 'greenwash' their corporate images in the eyes of the consumer. What they are really trying to buy for $20 is the trusted reputation farmers and ranchers have built up over generations. I'm sorry, but mine isn't for sale and I won't be participating in any such scheme.

WHAT’S ON
RESTAURANT OFFERS HUGE STEAKS FROM SUPERSIZED GRILL DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com It's a grilled meal that would cause any backyard 'cue king to drool. The 2 Grands in Arnprior has a new massive barbecue that heats up to 1,000 C in just five minutes. Affectionately - or ironically named Princess, she was hired to deal with the latest items on the menu. The 50ounce porterhouse and 40ounce tomahawk would fit in well on Fred Flintstone's table. The steaks are so big they forced a name change. The popular spot on Elgin Street is now called The 2 Grands Piano Bar and Steakhouse. So, the dueling pianos remain. Folks can still request songs and enjoy live performances by coowner Chris Dziekan and others. But they can now do it with a massive hunk of meat in front of them, along with corn crème brulee on the side. "This still fits in with our theme of sharables. This is something you and your partner or friend can share while enjoying the music," Dziekan said. "It's a draw for people outside town, too. Which is good for everybody, for every restaurant in Arnprior." A manly grill with manly slabs of steak. How manly must the chef be? "You've got to see my new
grill," chef Chantal Labreche said, the petite and affable young woman holding open the restaurant's back door. "The other day, I cooked 20 steaks at the same time on this." Not only has the food and menu grown, but so have the hours. Open Friday and Sat-

urday nights, The 2 Grands is also open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. It is also open earlier, starting at 5 p.m. "We've been selling out most Friday and Saturday nights," Dziekan said. "Which is a good problem to have."

Clockwise from top, The 2 Grands in Arnprior has converted to a steakhouse. Chef Chantal Labreche stands next to Princess, the massive new barbecue at The 2 Grands. It heats up to 1,000 C in less than five minutes. Perfect when customers order the porterhouse or tomahawk steaks. The restaurant's two grand pianos have competition: grand-sized steaks. A 50-ounce porterhouse, top, and 40-ounce tomahawk would be sure to bring a smile to Fred Flintstone. The 2 Grands has extended hours and offers steak on the menu. At the ribbon cutting are co-owners Dunnielle Kilby and Chantal Labreche, along with Mayor David Reid who moments later sat down to share steak with his wife Tracy.

River, hitting parts of the Castleford and Rhoddy's Bay areas before smothering large portions of Constance Bay and elsewhere. "There was no real significant flooding this year," said Don Ferko, engineer and technical officer. A major contributor in 2017 was a significant rainfall in early April. This year a rapid rise in snowmelt caused some increase,

but there were no significant rainfalls. "By the middle of July, everything is back to normal," he added. The results were similar for the Madawaska. Last year saw higher than normal flows every month. This year it is "about average." More snow accumulated this year, but there was little in the way of April showers.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say “goodbye” You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears will flow, What it meant to love you – no one can ever know. But now I know you want me, to mourn for you no more, To remember all the happy times, life still has much in store. Since you’ll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today – A hallowed place within my heart is where you’ll always stay Love and miss you, Mom, Denise and Lisa

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
SUDOKU
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It can be challenging to silence your suspicious mind, Aries. Not everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Avoid gossip whenever possible, and you’ll be fine.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a prime time to nurture business relationships that could push your employment career into a new direction, Libra. There are many possibilities at your disposal.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Wear your heart on your sleeve, Taurus. Doing so may endear you to others. It may seem like you’re putting all your cards on the table, but you’re showing you’re genuine.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It can be difficult for your detailed-oriented self to draw the line at what to include in a task and what to leave out. You strive for perfection in all you do, Scorpio.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Toning things down is not necessarily your style, Gemini. But this week you may want to keep a few details to yourself. Maintain a low profile for the next few days.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are wondering if you should play it safe or dance closer to the edge this week, Sagittarius. It may be because you are feeling trapped by routine. Change can be good.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it is very easy to get wrapped up in the problems of others. But sometimes you have to let others work things out on their own. Offer advice if it is sought.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you want to be there for all the people who may need your assistance. But avoid stretching yourself too thin so you can approach each situation energetically.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, behind the big lion’s roar beats the heart of a pussy cat. Your sensitive side is bound to come through this week, when you may provide comfort to a person in need.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Choose your battles, Aquarius. There are not enough hours in the day to be an activist for every cause. Only select the ones that you truly feel strongly about.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 What you show to the public may not be the true Virgo you keep close to yourself. Let a few intimate details sneak out, and you may be surprised at the reactions.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Try not to record every moment on social media, Pisces. It’s good to leave an aura of mystery from time to time and enjoy the moments.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

IMPORTANT SUMMER JOB HELPED FAMILY SURVIVE THE WINTER YOUNG MARY PARTICIPATED IN PRESERVING AND PICKLING TRADITION, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the job at hand as easy as possible. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and
anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thoroughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the
stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough, they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors slanted against the side of the house. The cellar was nothing more than a pit dug out of the ground. How I hated to go down those few steps into that space under the house! My hateful brother Emerson said he knew for a fact snakes lived in the cellar, and he also said spiders as big as bullfrogs loved the
damp darkness. Every year Father brought fresh sand from the gravel pit and replaced what was down there, and this is where carrots and parsnips were buried, and most amazing to me, they never froze over the long winters. When Mother and Audrey finished, and all the jars were sealed tightly, Mother kept a bowl of chili sauce out for our supper that night. Father loved chili sauce but he didn't eat it like the rest of the family. He poured his into a fruit nappy and dipped thick slices of buttered fresh bread into it, and ate it that way. He never failed to say, 'By gar, that's good, let me tell ya', and the bowl would be empty by the time supper was over. I would look over at all the sealers ready to be taken down to the cellar, and I would know, and be thankful, that that day's work would help us get through another winter. SELLING OTTAWA & THE VALLEY FOR ALL IT'S WORTH!
WELL-KNOWN PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST SWITCHES JOBS DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com She's among the familiar faces at many community events around Arnprior, and now Wendy Knechtel is settling into another highprofile position. The former communications officer at Arnprior Regional Health is staying in the public relations realm -- somewhat -- by taking over sales at Island View Suites. She has big shoes to fill after Sharon Gray retired, but Knechtel
knows what she is getting herself into. "It's a career change, for sure; but I worked with Sharon before and I'll be at community events just like before," she said from her office at the Jack Crescent location. "I really like hearing people's stories, and I did at (the hospital and nursing home) so it's not all that different." She sees her job as offering solutions. As we age and tire of household chores, the dishes and groceries - and as adult children grow increasingly
concerned about their elderly parent's safety - the people Knechtel matches with suites are looking for solutions. "It's about bringing peace of mind, and I really like that," she said. Island View has a relaxed atmosphere about it, unlike a busy institutional setting. And maybe unlike a busy household, too. Knechtel has four kids in her West Carleton home, all playing sports or service groups. Perhaps work can seem a tranquil retreat at times.
