BUILDER WANTS TO BECOME NEXT MCNAB/BRAESIDE MAYOR DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A lifelong resident and business owner is asking the residents of McNab/Braeside to vote for a new mayor this Oct. 22. Lou Laventure's family goes back four generations in the Goshen area, even having a road named after it. He grew up with farm-grade common sense then branched off to building energy-efficient homes, mostly in the nearby village. He is sole owner of Laventure Construction for 35 years. With the township entering a phase of replacing numerous buildings, including the main offices,

Derek Dunn/Metroland Lou Laventure he said it is the right time to have a builder as mayor. "I've been building the township one home at a time. We need someone who can budget, knows how to build a road, and I

can grasp how things need to be done," he said. "I guess it's time for me to start giving back." Recent construction at municipal sites in the township have experienced cost overruns and significant mistakes by workers from outside the area. Laventure wants that to change. "When we take on a project, we do it right. I've always said, 'I don't want to build every house, but the ones I do, I want done right,' " he said. "We have businesses in this township that could take on these projects. Why not at least ask the neighbour?" Among the issues he foresees during the next term is a cloverleaf at Highway 17, Calabogie

Road and McLean Drive. He owns property on the McLean side and isn't convinced the on and off ramps to the future twinned highway will be tight enough to efficiently utilize the leftover land. Some land will be left useless, he believes. Laventure indicated he will strive to keep taxes low while looking at ways to increase revenue from development. He is inclined to agree with a suggestion by candidate Bob Campbell, who wants to see the maximum severance for a residential property go from three to five. "I want to leave more of your tax dollars in your pocket, and the ones I take out, I want to keep in the township."

TOWNSHIP CANDIDATE SAYS USER AGREEMENT WITH ARNPRIOR 'UNFAIR' DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metro land.com The next council in McNab/Braeside should move more cautiously and spend less, according to Bobby Campbell. The former councillor said wildly expensive building projects have gone overbudget these past four years and now the township has little money in reserves, is borrowing at unknowable interest rates and dinging ratepayers with a massive increase this year.

"Older and younger residents cannot afford a 13.3 per cent increase," Campbell said. "It's going to take a long time to get out of this." The current council could have moved more slowly when it comes to a new township office, knowing the province wouldn't enforce accessibility requirements until 2025. But it went ahead and budgeted $800 million for a project that ballooned to $1.4 million. Council should follow the pay-asyou-go system that builds up reserves and minimiz-

Derek Dunn/Metroland Bob Campbell es borrowing. Campbell touched on a number of ways to reduce

costs and increase revenues at the rural township. Topping the list, from a potentially controversial perspective, is ending the recreation and library user agreement with Arnprior. "It's unfair to the people who don't use it," he said. "It's going to be too expensive down the road. If you add up all the money McNab/Braeside has given Arnprior over the years, we'd have a rink of our own." The township has a library user agreement with Renfrew; it should

do the same with Arnprior, Campbell said. He added that too many parents with NHL dreams are pressuring kids to play hockey. He accepts that "mistakes were made" when he was on council when Mary Campbell was mayor. Ending the agreement with Arnprior ended his and his entire council's time in office. But a sixquestion survey of residents at the time showed

that 62 per cent opposed the agreement. Admitting the survey wasn't clear, he still referenced it frequently. And yet, while Braeside's recreation centre is too expensive, White Lake deserves the same. "They deserve the same as what Braeside has; no more, no less." Increased speeding fines and development incentives would raise funds, he added.

The Grove Nursing Home: A community treasure in the woods Like so many residents of our town, Dorcas Woermke enjoyed the company of close friends, church fellowship and beloved family members. Together she and her husband, Irvin, raised a family; contributed significantly to their community; and took great pride in welcoming family and friends to our town. Her life, and that of her family, changed dramatically in 1979, when Dorcas was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The disease developed, eventually putting her into a wheelchair for 20 years. For many years, she was dutifully and lovingly cared for by her husband, Irvin. A van was purchased and repurposed to accommodate her wheelchair, affording her an opportunity to continue to attend community events and family gatherings. Despite every effort to modify their home, it became absolutely necessary, given her increasing disability and medical needs, for the family to agree to her relocation to a nursing home in January 2005. Unfortunately our Grove Nursing Home was full and therefore unable to accommodate Dorcas. Given the urgency of the situation, her family was forced to relocate Dorcas to Renfrew, away from family and friends. As luck would have it, a room became available at The Grove Nursing Home on the eve of her moving to Renfrew so she was able to stay in Arnprior after all. Residing at The Grove allowed Dorcas to celebrate special occasions and holidays with family. The Grove proved to be a comforting and engaging residence for Dorcas and added greatly to her quality of life. With Dorcas in Arnprior Irvin was able to visit daily, their daughter, Valerie Wereley, helped organize family events and saw to the seasonal decoration of Dorcas’ room and friends often stopped by with news and stories that filled Dorcas’ days with joy and a sense of belonging. The key to this story, is rooted in the fact that The Grove was indeed available to her, and to this day remains available to others in our community. But sadly The Grove Nursing Home is too small a facility to accommodate our growing population of seniors. Valerie Wereley & Dorcas Woermke Without a new Grove, the backlog of residents on the waiting list and those wanting to remain in the community cannot be addressed. Without a new Grove, families would be faced with the challenge of travelling out of town to visit and advocate for a parent, spouse or loved one. Without a new Grove you yourself might one day be forced to seek a nursing home far from home, without the regular loving support of family and friends. Indeed many of us will need a new Grove to assist in life’s transitions and to ensure a quality of life that is dignified and respectful of our contributions to our community. The Arnprior Regional Health Foundation, which raises funds for the Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital and The Grove Nursing Home, is committed to raising $4 million to build the “new” Grove and $1 million for new medical equipment. The new building will accommodate 96 residents and construction is expected to start later this year. Please remember Dorcas Woermke’s story and that of the many others who have benefitted from the location and care provided by The Grove Nursing Home over the last 37 years. When asked, please give generously to this uniquely beneficial fundraising endeavor.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A social media site's well known contributor will, if elected, post results of Arnprior town council meetings. Marc Bissonette often posts restaurant recommendations and makes other comments on the Facebook page What's Up, Arnprior? He's calls it WUA. Barring any legal reason for disallowing him from sharing information from public meetings, he plans to help town hall improve its marketing and communications. "There could be better and more communication with residents. The town could be using more social and digital media," said

Derek Dunn/Metroland Marc Bissonette Bissonette, who has 20 years of experience in marketing and advertisement. "WUA is a really important part of the community. There are over 9,000 members, that's incredible." "Mr. Foodie" as some call the roughly five-year

resident, is by design a relentlessly positive and optimistic contributor. Growing Arnprior's businesses particularly the after 5 p.m. scene - is important to Bissonette, who sits on the town's corporate advisory committee. Yet in person he doesn't pretend to be without faults. He has passed along the odd crude joke, pokes fun at his appearance and he has been less than impressed with some services in town. He sees the apparent contradiction in his worldview. The marketing side of the lifelong political junkie who grew up in Ottawa appreciates the Ontario PC party's buck-a-beer strategy. It worked. But the rational and measured side of him scoffs. "It's stupid, of course.

But it's brilliant, too." A staunch conservative as a young man who campaigned for the Alliance Party, he has gradually moved toward the centre "where real politics takes place." The reason can be traced back to a few causes. Growing up without a father, Bissonette was an angry young man prone to road rage. When his highneeds son was born, he realized government can be a force for good in society. Some may wonder why Canada would spend $160,000 annually on his young adult son who functions as a six-month-old, he said. It's because the way we treat our most vulnerable shows everyone how they could expect to be treated if found in the same situation.

Derek Dunn/Metroland A car landed in the ditch along White Lake Road drew an ambulance, police, and McNab/Braeside firefighters on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Police could not be reached for details prior to deadline. The blue Pontiac Vibe hatchback, heading eastbound toward Arnprior, left the road about 8:30 a.m. No other vehicles appeared damaged. The incident occurred near 1418 White Lake Rd., just east of Mountain Creek Golf Course. Authorities are considering road modifications at another location about two kilometres away, up the steep incline where a fatality occurred last year.

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The winding three-kilometre woodland stretch of White Lake Road should be widened and have its speed limit reduced. Those were two of the suggestions brought up as McNab-Braeside council once again discussed safety on the road at its Aug. 7 meeting. Coun. Mark MacKenzie, who authored a report to Renfrew County council in January stressing the importance of improving safety on 'the Mountain' section of County Road 2 (White Lake Road), said there continues to be collisions and close calls on the road because of drivers hitting the gravel shoulder. It can be a real challenge for inexperienced motorists and even test experienced drivers, he said. With the roadway being minimum width and the shoulder continuing to deteriorate as run-off from heavy rains become more frequent, such incidents will increase, he predicted. The curves and slopes of the road and possibility of wildlife in the section add to the hazard. MacKenzie said the paved roadway should be widened, as was done in the bridge area of White Lake Road and Stewartville Road. Mayor Tom Peckett reported that the county had a staffer gather informa-

tion on the road and is awaiting statistics from the OPP. With the speed limit reduced to 60 km/h at the Arnprior end of the road, it's possible the 80 km/h limit through the 'Mountain' could also be lowered. He said he would encourage the county to include widening when the road is repaved. He explained that Stewartville Road was moved up the priority list because it was in such bad shape that bus students were being "bounced around" as they were driven to and from McNab Public School. Hard shoulders were added because of the amount of pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the road, he added. Peckett said the county is trying to pave shoulders wherever possible to deter erosion, as well as for safety reasons. However, it does come with extra costs, he said. MacKenzie noted that the OPP already have statistics that indicate the White Lake Road stretch has one of highest rates of traffic collisions and single-vehicle crashes of any Renfrew County road. It also has the highest number of personal injury and personal property loss incidents in the township. The OPP report 55 crashes, including a fatality last August, on the stretch in the past five years. MacKenzie suggests

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 2:00pm – 4:00pm DE RENZY HALL, ST ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 80 DANIEL STREET, ARNPRIOR, ONTARIO K7S 2K8 Derek Dunn/Metroland A stuffed bear and flowers lean against a rock at the site of a fatal accident along 'The Mountain' stretch of White Lake Road. McNab-Braeside council is urging Renfrew County to improve safety in the area in which a 22-year-old driver from Ottawa was killed on Aug. 28, 2017. that there are likely many more unreported accidents in which motorists arrange to be pulled out of the ditch. "While this can happen anywhere, it seems to be much more prevalent on White Lake Road," he said. The other two most dangerous crash spots in the township have been dealt with, he added, citing the Calabogie Road/Burnstown Road intersection four-way stop, and the extending of the four lanes on Hwy. 17 through to Scheel Drive. In his report, MacKenzie said the section of White Lake Road from the Mountain to Claybank Bridge, which has had four fatalities in the past five years, is also challenging for drivers. He pointed out that it has four 'S' curves and a wind tunnel effect in places that make for hazardous snowy and icy driving.

MacKenzie's report concludes that the most effective option to improve safety would be to widen the road. Although it would be the most expensive, "that extra forgiving foot or two on the side will save lives, personal injury and property damage, and will reduce significantly the amount of emergency service time currently tied up." He also lists four other safety suggestions to the county for improving safety on the road: 1. include rumble strips in the widened area and on the centre line; 2. install more guard rails (currently there are safety rails along 10 per cent of the Mountain stretch, with some perilous areas left unprotected); 3. reduce the speed to 60 or 70 km/h; 4. improve speed and deer warning signage.

ATVERS MUST EARN TRUST ATVs: some love them; some hate 'em. So it's no surprise there is a sharp divide over whether all-terrain-vehicles should be permitted on the CN Trail through the south end of Renfrew County. It's reminiscent of the debates 20 years ago over allowing snowmobilers on the corridors left when they first started tearing up the rails. At that time there was a vocal element, particularly among those living along the rail lines, opposed to allowing machines on the trails. It was hard to blame them as snowmobiles tended to be much noisier back then and there was little policing of the yahoo element. It only took a few bad apples with no respect for residents or pedestrians enjoying the trail to rouse the populace against snowmobile use. But give the snowmobilers credit. They didn't just whine about the snowmobile naysayers. They took action to address the main concerns. They mobilized their members, worked with police to drag offenders into line and promoted the economic advantages of the activity. They promoted a trail permit system and signed landuse agreements with landowners. They conducted training sessions for members and stay-on-the-trails campaigns. They showed they were willing to pitch in by maintaining, grooming and bridging trails to the benefit of both themselves and other users. They exuded community spirit by holding fundraisers for a variety of worthy causes such as Easter Seals and the Snowsuit fund. The snowmobilers slowly earned the confidence of the public and local politicians. They proved that being respectful of others does not have to take the fun out of the sport. Much of the credit for the snowmobilers' elevated standing in the community is due to the area's clubs - all have played roles in making snowmobiling, dare we say it, respectable. The ATVers need to steal a page out of the snowmobilers' playbook. The ATVers who ignore signs, rip up pathways, vandalize gates, race four abreast on the backroads and carelessly discard cigarette butts do not help the cause. The Renfrew County ATV Club has promised increased policing, but have yet to persuade many they are up to the task. The club has been making strides in the last couple of years when it comes to bringing ATVers under their umbrella, encouraging safety and involvement in maintaining trails systems. But they have a way to go before they come close to achieving the trails 'cred' the snowmobile clubs have accumulated. Adding to the ATVers' challenge is that their season is much longer than the snowmobile one and fraught with many more perils, from fire and dust to noise and littering. And the trails tend to be much busier in the summer, multiplying the likelihood of conflict. If the ATVers want to change the minds of McNab/ Braeside and Renfrew councils to give them full use of the CN Trail in this area, they need to become a more credible representative of ATVers as a whole. And they need to persuade residents along the trail they can stop the excesses and bad behaviour of some of their brethren. At least they have the Algonquin (CP) Trail on which to show they are up to the challenge (if they aren't they may lose that too). Earning the trust of local residents and councillors won't come overnight. It takes time and effort. Just ask the snowmobilers.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ARNPRIOR NEEDS MORE PROJECT ARNPRIOR SENIORS HOUSING, WELCOMES COME RECREATION TO AN END To the Editor: Yes, Mr. White, I totally agree. We do need more apartments in Arnprior geared to income. Also a condo, and not downtown by the railroad track. A good place would be in the exhibition ground. Three could be put in there nicely. People are paying up to $1,000 a month plus utilities, trying to live on old age pension, especially women who had to quit working to raise their families. The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) came into being in 1968, so they didn't pay into it. Skimpy living, eh? They also could do something for recreation for seniors. Let's look after our own too. Most of us are over 80. And this is what's needed here in Arnprior. This letter is for all you councillors and the mayor. Are you listening?

M.M. ROBINSON ARNPRIOR

To the editor: In 2015 the communities of Arnprior and area responded to the need to help refugees fleeing a civil war in Syria. In 2017 volunteers from the communities of Fitzroy and Woodlawn joined our committee, and we were able to assist a mother and daughter at risk, fleeing persecution in Iran. The gifts of money, time and goods enabled a safe haven from war and conflict for two families. The common element of both families was the parent(s) wanted to provide a better life for their children. The first family of five (plus a new healthy baby later in the year) has settled in Arnprior with the aid of many volunteers. The dad is now working two part-time jobs and, along with his family, continues to live their happy and successful day-to-day

lives. After their initial year of sponsorship here in Arnprior, the second family has decided to move on to Vancouver, where they have friends. The daughter worked part time during the year and completed her Grade 12 from the Adult High School in Arnprior and was valedictorian at her graduation. The sponsoring group was very proud of her efforts. Needless to say, the two separate committees working with the families are very proud of the achievement of both families as they struggled with new language, new culture, freezing temperatures and trying to establish their new lives in Canada despite their loneliness for those they left behind and all that was familiar to them. None of this could have been possible without your generosity and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you involved for making it possible.

YOUNG RENFREW COUNTY ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRITS SET SAIL On July 5, a group of enthusiastic young entrepreneurs gathered to meet with Enterprise Renfrew County staff and business community mentors for the official launch of the 2018 Summer Company program. This year, six students ffrom across the Valley were successful in earning a Summer Company award to run their own business during the summer. To qualify, students had to develop a comprehensive

business plan, including market analysis, operations and financial feasibility. Instead of working in a summer job for someone else, these students decided to put their exciting ideas into reality, creating their own businesses and becoming self-employed entrepreneurs. Colleen Sadler, Enterprise Renfrew County business consultant, spoke to the essence of the program. "Youth and young adults hold the key to a bright fu-

ture in Ontario. More employment opportunities will result across our province if young entrepreneurs are given the opportunity to succeed," she said. Here are the participants for 2018: • Corbin Brydges operates Corbin's Firewood, in Arnprior. He can supply you with all your winterheating, cottage or campffire needs. Contact Corbin at 613-314-4722 or waynebrydges@hotmail.com. • Samuel Kuehl operates Sharn Craftworks from his home studio in Arnprior. He offers 2D and 3D carved, wooden items such as signs, intricate tops for memory boxes, a wooden picture of your child or a pet, and will also do custom work using a computercontrolled machine. Con-

tact Samuel at 613-322-6250 or somebody.kuehl@gmail.com. • Connor Robinson operates Valley Tech Repair, in Douglas, and provides cellphone screen repair. He can be contacted at 613-2815504 or connorbuffjoe@gmail.com. • Nathan Boor is operating NB Computers in Deep River. He builds custom computers for gaming, media and general use, in addition to offering computer repair. Nathan can be con-

tacted at 613-602-3548 or nboor@hotmail.ca. • Daniel Fritzsche is operating Focus Photoprint, in Deep River. Daniel will take your photo and create a 3D printed lithophane, which is a 3D image that changes according to the intensity and quality of the light striking the image. You can contact Daniel at Y 613-602-0252 or danielfritzsche25@gmail.com. • Paige Mask is operating Paige Micalea Esthetics, in Barry's Bay. She of-

BLUEFISH SWIM CLUB FINISHES ANOTHER BUSY, SUCCESSFUL MEET JEREMIAH GILLETT Twenty-eight of our Bluef fish swimmers attended the Blackfly Meet in Deep River on May 12 and 13. This is the one meet of the year when our noncompetitive and precompetitive swimmers join our competitive swimmers to see what a swim meet is all about. Our swimmers swam hard and fast and achieved many personal best times and most importantly had ffun. A highlight of the meet was Jordan Schaepper, who swam the 200 fly for the first time and achieved a provincial qualifying time. The Eastern Ontario Long Course Regional Championships came next in Nepean ffrom June 1-3. Four Bluefish swimmers qualified for this meet based on their performance earlier in the season. Two senior team members Cameron Shepherd and Alex Wroe qualified but were unW able to attend. Two younger swimmers, Clayton Williamson and Jordan Shcaepper qualified and represented the Bluefish at the meet. Clayton Williamson (10) competed in W the 10 and under division and had some fast swims with two personal best times and five top-10 finishes, including third place in the 50 butterfly

and 200 free. Jordan Schaepper (11), new to the 11/12 age division, swam fast, achieving six personal best times. Jordan took 19.04 seconds off his 400 free to end seventh place and make a qualifying provincial time. Jordan also swam the 800 free for the second time ever and took 1:48.59 off his previous time to finish seventh and beat the provincial qualifying time by over 26 seconds. Jordan's time ranked him 38th in Canada in this event for 11-year-olds. The Ontario Summer Festival Championships, provincials for 13 and under, were held at the Markham PanAm Pool from June 15 to June 17. This meet hosts the fastest 13 and under swimmers in the province. Again Jordan Schaepper's hard work in training paid off, having only recently turned 11, he qualiffied in the 200 fly, 400 and 800 ffreestyle and also swam the 200 freestyle at Festivals. Jordan finished in the top 21 in all four events. Jordan swam a personal best time in the 200 f fly. Congratulations to Jordan for representing the Bluefish team so well. Clayton Williamson also managed to qualify for the 200 ffreestyle but was unable to compete.

The club held its end of year banquet June 8 to celebrate the accomplishments and dedication of our swimmers. The season was very successful with swimmers attending six invitational meets, a fun meet, two regional meets and two provincial level meets. Awards were presented to some of our standout swimmers. We also recognized our W top three swimathon fundraisers: Kenny Mason, James Hamilton and Caeden Adam, well done boys! We would like to say thank you the community for supporting our swimmers by sponsoring them for swimathon and then again by purchasing raffle tickets for our West Jet Gift of Flight Draw. The Bluefish families sold 666 raffle tickets for the prize of two round trip tickets to anywhere West Jet flies. The draw took place on June 15 at the Nick Smith Centre and the winner was Kevin Hamilton ... Congratulations! Community participation and fundraising continued recently when two of our Bluefish swimmers, Jordan Schaepper and Hadleigh Williamson joined members of our Greyfish (adult) swim team on July 14 for a three kilometre open water swim, Bring on the Bay, benefiting Easter Seals. Schaepper and Williamson joined the 657 W people in the three km race, being two of only 29 swimmers under the age of 14. Both swam the three km in under 60 minutes. We are looking forward to W a great 2018-19 season. The club is looking forward to welcoming many new and existing members to its competitive, non-competitive and pre-competitive programs. ABSC is a non-profit, volunteer run organization with the goal of fostering youth fitness, sportsmanship and ffriendship for its members. Registration for returning R members was Aug. 16 and on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. for new and existing swimmers. Parents are welcome to bring their new swimmers by to swim for the coaches and see where they will fit in. We look forward to seeing lots of old and new faces this upcoming season. Things at the Nick Smith Centre will soon return to normal following repairs of a brine leak beneath the ice surface in one of the rinks. Council held a special meeting Friday, Aug. 17 to provide an update on the issue. Following the meeting, Town of Arnprior CAO Michael Wildman told the Chronicle-Guide that officials were able to locate and repair the leak quite quickly. In order for workers to locate the problem area, the rinks were shut down beginning Monday, Aug. 13. There was never any danger to the public, said Wildman. "Brine is the salty solution that's underneath the arena floor and contributes to refrigeration," said Wildman. "It's a very benign thick slimy stuff that is not harmful." Work is already under-

way to replace the ice in Arena A, the Bert Hall Arena. "The ice has been put back on the first slab in Arena A and there'll be a hockey school there next week," said Wildman. "Arena B, the Glenn Arthur Arena, should be up and running a week after that." Officials have not yet determined the total cost of the leak repair, but the CAO doesn't expect it to be too expensive. "It's not going to break the piggy bank, it'll likely be covered in the normal operating budget," said Wildman. "It's unfortunate but sometimes when we do maintenance these things have to be fixed." A secondary issue that has arisen will also be quickly dealt with. "We had observed in a piece of drywall (seven metres) off the ground - which likely came from a puck - a

fair amount of moisture," noted the CAO. "We felt we needed to test it to make sure there wasn't mould." A professional environmental company was brought in and mould was indeed detected, said Wildman. "They determined there was mould present in the hole but none present in any of the ambient air," he added. "When we tested the air it was the same comparable quality as in an outside environment." He stressed that there is no risk to public health. "We have notified users we did find mould, but it is not accessible to people, it is on the inside of the walls and it's trapped. There is no way for anyone to come into contact with it. The hole has been fixed and we're coming up with a remediation strategy," Wildman said. "The facility is safe and we'll continually monitor the air."

ties. Examples include equipment purchase and installation, energy efficient building improvements and repairs and the purchase of rescue and fire equipment. Over the past 15 years, the FCC AgriSpirit Fund has supported 1,170 projects, an investment of more than $13.5 million. The next application period opens in spring 2019. Registered charities, municipalities and non-profit organizations interested in funding can visit www.fccagrispiritfund.ca for eligibility requirements, to apply online and view past projects.

Arnprior is among the communities receiving funds through Farm Credit Canada's AgriSpirit Fund. Aug. 20, Farm Credit Canada (FCC) announced $1.5 million in funding going to 84 community groups across Canada to support rural capital projects. The Town of Arnprior will get $10,000 to upgrade the LED lighting at the Nick Smith Centre. "The FCC AgriSpirit Fund is about helping community-minded individuals and groups undertake pro-

jects that enhance the quality of life in rural Canada," said Sophie Perreault, FCC executive vice-president and chief operating officer. "Our employees care about the communities where they live and work, and we share in their pride and sense of accomplishment by lending a helping hand." This year, the FCC AgriSpirit Fund awarded between $5,000 and $25,000 for community improvement projects that enhance the lives of residents or contribute to sustainability in communi-

BUTTERFLIES DELIVER WISHES TO THE HEAVENS SENIORS AT HOME HOSTS TOUCHING TRIBUTE FOR LOVED ONES DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com The inaugural Live Butterfly Release at Robert Simpson Park drew more than a few tears from those in attendance. About 200 butterflies (up from the planned 100) were released last Sunday morning after hearing wishes for loved ones who have passed on. Hosted by Arnprior Braeside McNab Seniors at Home, the nonprofit group's fundraiser took inspiration from an Indigenous legend: "If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make

no sound, the butterfly cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. "In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens on the wings of the butterfly and be granted. "Today we have gathered to remember and treasure the memory of loved ones in heaven with wishes of eternal peace and we are about to set these butterflies free in the trust all our wishes will be granted." Before they were released, Vicki Brittle sang two songs, including Amazing Grace, while Rev. Dr. Leo Hughes offered a prayer. Representatives of both Boyce Funeral Home and Pilon Family Funeral Home were among the first to release butterflies.

Clockwise from top: Eldon Smith's little friend seems a little reluctant to fly off. Seniors at Home executive director Dennis Harrington readies his butterfly for flight. Andre and Gina Pilon share a butterfly that according to indigenous legend will take their wish to the heavens. Vicki Brittle sings "In the arms of an angel," by Sarah McLachlan. AN UPDATE

FROM YOUR

ARNPRIOR REGIONAL HEALTH

The power of five working as one: the Arnprior & Area Rural Health Hub Five local health provider and service agencies make up the Arnprior & Area Rural Health Hub. Arnprior Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program Inc., the Arnprior and District Family Health Team, Arnprior Regional Health, the Champlain Local Health Integration Network and the Renfrew County and District Health Unit have committed to working together to improve the experience and outcomes of patients with chronic diseases, focusing on health promotion, disease prevention and improving transitions/providing more seamless care. Focusing initially on those in the community living with COPD and those living with diabetes, AARHH identified local service gaps and the need to promote

local services to these populations. The first projects of the AARHH were to create an inventory of all local diabetes resources and all local COPD resources and make them available on Ontario 211; The Arnprior COPD Exercise Guide (available on the ARH website), which helps persons with COPD find local exercise programs that are right for them; and reaching members of the community at risk for pre-diabetes or Type II diabetes to promote earlier diagnosis. As part of this initiative, local pharmacies, community paramedics, local physicians and the Family Heath Team are collectively using the CANRISK screening tool to help identify those at risk.

Seamless care after a diabetes diagnosis: Bob’s story Nahanni McIntosh, Arnprior Regional Health

One of the first things you notice about Bob Potter when he enters a room is his energy. His choice of footwear (sneakers) seems appropriate, like he’s going to jump up at any moment and lead us in a vigorous calisthenics routine. But my first impressions of Bob are hard to align with the reason he’s here to talk to me. Just over a year ago, Bob, who’s in his early sixties, was overweight. He was severely out of shape, his diet was less than ideal and he constantly felt run down. Luckily, a visit to his family doctor, Dr. Jonathan Fitzsimon at the Arnprior & District Family Health Team, was about to change his life. Bob found out that not only did he have high blood pressure, but his blood sugar was so high that he was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Despite having several risk factors, including a family history of diabetes, this news came as a shock to Bob. But it did serve as the wakeup call Bob needed to start taking charge of his own health and turn his life around.

insideottawavalley.com

Dr. Fitzsimon referred Bob to the Family Health Team’s dietitian and an ARH diabetes nurse educator. Bob enrolled in a diabetes education course offered at Arnprior Regional Health through the Renfrew County Diabetes Education Program. Bob, a self-described Type A personality, focused on listening intently and learning as much as he could about managing his condition and following instructions to the letter. He started following the Canada Food Guide created specifically for diabetics and dutifully tracked his food for months in a food log. He cut out all refined sugar and rediscovered his love of cooking, this time with only fresh, healthy ingredients. Bob emphatically states that his lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar and 50 lb. weight loss wouldn’t have been possible without the Arnprior and Area Rural Health Hub. The Health Hub made provider collaboration, between the FHT, ARH and Renfrew Public Health, seamless and easy. This, in turn, made Bob aware of all the local resources available to him as soon as he was diagnosed, and made his transition from one appointment to another, from one agency to another as easy as possible.

Bob, before his life- changing diabetes diagnosis

Bob became actively involved in the Rural Health Hub, attending stakeholder meetings and providing valuable input during the co-design process of a local diabetes screening event and a local resource inventory to support those living with diabetes. When I first contacted him about sharing his story as a Health Hub patient, he didn’t hesitate “The Health Hub made it easy for me to take control of my diabetes,” Bob tells me. “This approach ensured that I knew about and was connected with the right people and the right resources.” “One of the key elements of the approach has been patient participation in all aspects of the program, says Jason Moore, a project manager with AARHH. “Patients, healthcare providers and administrators worked together to co-design solutions to meet community needs. This ensures that the unique needs of all parties involved are accounted for throughout the projects, and results in more effective services and continued engagement of all stakeholders.” Bob is practically evangelical about the value of patient involvement. “If you don’t have diabetes yourself, there’s things you don’t think about.” He gives a small but effective example: a meeting of AARHH stakeholders that included several community members with diabetes. “They provided snacks at the meeting, but they were trays of cookies. We shouldn’t eat that stuff.” To further illustrate the profound impact that the Arnprior & Area Rural Health Hub had on him, Bob stopped by my office two days later with an envelope containing two photos. One was taken the day prior in his living room and contrasted sharply with the second image, one of the few “fat photos” Bob could find. Bob smiles proudly as I pick my jaw up off the floor. “I’m not unique,” says Bob. “When everyone’s connected and working together, it’s really a well-oiled machine. If you follow directions and take advantage of the tools available, you’ll have successful results, just like I did.” Bob and his wife now enjoy many active pursuits such as pickleball

The idea for Tee it Up for Autism was born in the fall of 2015, while away on a girls' weekend with some close friends. One of our friends whom was supposed to meet us at a cottage in upstate New York (close to where she was living at the time), called a few days before our departure to break the news that her youngest little boy had been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ADS). Her first son had also been diagnosed with ASD two years prior. With this news so fresh and a long list of worries and things to prepare for, our friend was unable to make our girls' weekend that year. Feeling heartbro-

ken for her, we decided while away together that weekend to show her our love and support by helping to spread autism awareness in the form of a golf tournament here in her hometown of Arnprior. The tournament was planned for the following summer and was a huge success, raising over $6,700 for her boys. While preparing for the tournament we began to learn a lot about autism and the families it affects. Recognizing the need for increased awareness and understanding for these very special souls, we decided to make Tee it Up for Autism an annual event. In 2017 we raised $7,725 for a wonderful local charity called

The third and final of McNabBraeside's free concerts in the park series is set for Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Waba Cottage Museum grounds in White Lake. Local band Vintage Bootleg will perform between 7 and 9 p.m. The band's Jeff Holmes and Phil Warland are fresh off several gigs this year at such places as Arnprior's Robert Simpson Park, the Renfrew KOA Campground, Almonte Legion, Pakenham and at Red Pine Bay in Braeside for Father's Day. They play a combination of blues, country, bluegrass and rock 'n' roll music. Holmes is from Arnprior and Warland from Pakenham. About 25 people showed at Burnstown Beach Aug. 2 as the Kinburn Lads (Andrew Tait and Kelly White) played a bluesy set. Among the audience were two groups of people listening from their boats just off the beach. The series began July 12 at Red Pine Bay when Alan's Oldies entertained.

SHOREBIRDS ABOUND ON THE COAST OF JAMES BAY NATURE COLUMNIST REFLECTS ON TWO WEEKS IN JAMES BAY MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

I am just back from two weeks of shorebird research along the coast of James Bay. Along with six others, I was stationed in the most northern of three Indigenous goose-hunting/research camps. There I was immersed in the beauty of untouched wilderness, far removed from the vexation of automobiles, cellphones, television and Trump tweets. Our job was to conduct coastal shorebird surveys in the hours embracing high tide. The camp was a kilometre from the coast on the base of Longridge, one of three long points in our survey area. In addition to daily surveys, chores included hauling jugs of water from a creek half a kilometre from camp. Water was twice filtered before being used for cooking or drinking. Showers and baths were non-existent. Seven kilometres to the north was Bear Point on West Bay, our furthest survey point. At high tide one necessarily walked a tortuous route across Goosegrasscovered ridges separated by wide creeks and tiny inlets. At low tide walking was considerably easier across the vast mud flats on which shorebirds fed. Six kilometres south of Lon-

gridge was Paskwachi Point. Here at low tide, rocks of varying colours and sizes dotted the mud flats, making walking slightly difficult. While shorebirds fed on all mud flats between the three points, the endangered Red Knot, the main target of our surveys, favoured this location. Inevitably I was the first one up at camp, and each dawn I eagerly scanned the horizon for animals. One year, a large bull caribou made an appearance. But this year only black bears were visible, several of which regularly fed on the Gooseberries and Soapberries abundantly growing on the coastal ridges. A mother with two cubs frequenting one of our trails caused some concern but they were never threatening and we did carry bear spray and bangers (explosive devices shot from a cylinder) just in case. Real excitement arose when on three occasions beluga whales swam into view. One of these beautiful white animals afforded great views when it rolled onto its side and rubbed against submerged rocks to remove old skin. The mud flats were alive daily with thousands of sandpipers devouring myriad invertebrates in the mud. The fat they accumulated was the fuel for their journey to South America. Each day Ross Wood captured sandpipers in mist nets strung along the shore. He took the birds' measurements as well as blood samples, and placed numbered metal tags on their legs. Ross also equipped Lesser Yellowlegs with satellite transmitters, devices that send data every

six hours so that their owners' movements can be tracked wherever they fly. It is an exhilarating sight when like a runaway wave thousands of White-rumped and Semipalmated sandpipers come streaming toward you, their wings nearly touching the mud flats, swishing the air when they pass around you. Like leaves tossed by wind, they scatter across the mud flats and immediately start probing beaks into mud in search of prey upon landing. I already miss the birds and the wonderful people that I had the honour of spending time with. Perhaps like the sandpipers that soon will be continuing their journey south, I too will return to James Bay next year to experience its magic once again. OPINION

MARGUIRITE'S OVERNIGHT VISIT COMES TO A SUDDEN END FATHER FORCED TO DRIVE HER HOME AT MIDNIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Why bad Marguirite would want to come to my house to spend a night was beyond me. She would be leaving electric lights and flush toilet! But her mother had phoned and said the long summer holidays would soon be over, and her young daughter (who nobody liked at the Northcote School) would very much

like to sleep over one night at my house before school started back in September. My sister Audrey wasn't at all pleased. She would have to sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen to give up her bed she shared with me. Mother telling her it would only be for one night did little to stop Audrey's complaining. Marguirite arrived with her mother in their brand new car, and she bounded out with a little leather suitcase, which caused my brother Emerson to wonder if she planned on moving in. The boys had been warned to behave, and supper, to my complete surprise, went off without a hitch. Marguirite even had seconds. She and I played house with my dolls until it was

bedtime, and then we climbed the stairs, Mother making sure the three boys were settled down first. I saw her wag a finger at their doorway. She didn't have to say a word. They knew what that meant. I should have known the night wouldn't pass without Marguirite causing a stir. Mother barely had her foot on the last step going downstairs with the coal oil lamp, when Marguirite said she had to use the privy. The chamber pot under the bed, she said, was out of the question. Of course, I had to go with her. We passed through the kitchen where Mother and Father were still sitting. Audrey glared at Marguirite from the creton couch. The trip out to the back house was followed by

three others, one right after the other. The fourth time down, Marguirite stopped dead right in the middle of the kitchen floor and started bawling her eyes out. "I want to go home," she wailed. Well, there was no way you could call her mother on the phone at that hour of the night. The ring would waken the entire neighbourhood of Northcote. Father knew what he had to do. He pulled his overalls on over his long underwear, while Marguirite tore upstairs to get her genuine leather suitcase, passing Audrey who was on her way upstairs to reclaim her bed. By the time Father got the old Model T out of the drive shed, Marguirite was already outside on the back

stoop. Everyone but Audrey was wide-awake, and Mother said there was no reason we all couldn't have a cup of hot chocolate before going back up to bed. By the time Father got back, the old kitchen clock was just about to strike midnight. Emerson said we might as well stay up the rest of the night and play euchre. Father never said a word. Looking like a thunder cloud, he headed right into the bedroom off the kitchen. Mother said at breakfast the next morning, he

didn't even stop long enough to take his clothes off. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE One male has been arrested and charged after a theft from Premium Vehicle Storage Ottawa. The owner of the business which is located in Arnprior reported to the OPP in June 2018 that they believed a former employee had been stealing money from the business for some time. Det. Const. Kyle Mask led the investigation which involved more than 40 witnesses and more than $50,000 in missing funds. At the conclusion of the investigation Richard (Dickie) McLeod, 49, of Arnprior was charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Oct. 24. The OPP Renfrew detachment investigated 302 calls for service from Monday, Aug. 6 to Sunday, Aug. 13. Domestic Violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 14 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with uttering threats. No other criminal offences were alleged Impaired Drivers On Saturday, Aug. 11 at

about 1:29 a.m. Const. Jodi Burns stopped a motor vehicle on Daniel St. N. in Arnprior. The female driver was arrested for impaired driving. Following breath tests at the detachment Justine Hawkins-Hass, 29, of Ottawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Sept. 12. On Sunday, Aug. 12 at about 3:20 pm officers responded to a single motor vehicle in the ditch on White Lake Road. The female driver was not injured and there was no damage to the vehicle. The female driver had been drinking and was arrested at the scene. Following breath tests at the detachment Nicole Clarke, 31, of Ottawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on September 12. Const. Kyle Brown led the investigation. Fraud Police are warning residents of Renfrew County that if a caller asks you to pay them with iTunes cards, it is a scam and hang up the phone. An Arnprior resident

believed the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) was going to arrest them for taxes owed unless iTunes cards were purchased and provided to them. The victim purchased more than $12,000 worth of cards and then provided the identifying numbers on the back of the cards to the scammers over the telephone. The CRA does not accept iTunes cards as a valid form of payment for taxes owed. The police will not arrest you for taxes owed. These are warning signs that you are dealing with a scammer and not a valid employee of the CRA. Please educate yourself, your family members and friends about frauds and scams. Go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca for more information. Stunt Driving Charge On Monday, Aug. 6 at approximately 10:25 am Sgt. Derek McLeod stopped a speeding vehicle on Highway 17 in McNab Braeside Township. The motor vehicle was travelling at more than 50 km above the posted 90 km/hr posted speed limit. Paige Malcolm, 52, of Ottawa was charged with stunt driving and issued a summons to appear in court in Renfrew on Sept. 14.
