STUDENT CROSSING CHANGES
Derek Dunn/Metroland Tim Neill guides McKoel and Jax Patterson across Madawaska Street at Harriet Street on the first day of school. Until this year, Neill was stationed at Madawaska and Bell but council wants to dissuade students from crossing at the municipal parking lot behind Shoppers Drug Mart. He said about an equal number cut over Madawaska at the two. Neill, an 18-year crossing guard, could find himself out of work if the town goes ahead with the purchase of a lighted pedestrian crossover similar to those at Harriet and Elgin, and McGonigal and Daniel streets. There will be no lunch hour crossing guards this year.

WEATHER DOESN'T DAMPER HIGHLAND DANCERS' SPIRITS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Caitlin Stewart Memorial Highland Dancing Competition keeps growing. It's too bad so do extreme weather warnings. The 19th annual Scottish dancing extravaganza in Arnprior attracted its largest entry yet, 132 dancers, for its competition on Aug. 26. Interest was so
high, registration had to be cut short. Even so, the competition stretched longer than usual, late into the afternoon, before ending with the popular cakewalk interpretive dance by some of the top performers. Part of the reason was that, for the first time ever, the event had to be moved indoors to the Nick Smith Centre when the weather forecast included a high potential for lightning
storms. While the nasty weather didn't materialize, it did take away one of the event's biggest draws, the breathtaking location in Robert Simpson Park overlooking the Ottawa River. Main organizer Renee Stewart was philosophical about the move that was encouraged by nervous parents and judge Gillian Dunn, who noted rains the night before had left the outdoor stage slightly wet. The volunteer helpers ensured the event ran smoothly despite the relocation, Stewart noted. "We've always had great weather before, so one year isn't bad," she said. "Just wait to next year (when the event celebrates its 20th

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Several dogs remain on the property of an Upper Ottawa Valley owner who is facing cruelty charges. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has charged the Beachburg area man, who has up to 40 dogs on his property, under the provincial animal welfare legislation with permitting distress, failing to provide standards of care, failing to comply with an Ontario SPCA order and causing distress. When Stephanie Fraser-Torok recently visited the Zion Road property with her fiancé, she was disturbed to see so many dogs running about; the ground littered with what appeared to be pig skulls; bones, feces, and rusty tools all around. She used her cellphone to record video and posted it to social media, along with notifying the OPP and SPCA. "I wanted to grab all of them and put them in the car with me," Fraser-Torok said. "I can't sleep at night." However, none seemed emaciat-
ed or in pain. They barked and trotted down the lengthy driveway. "I don't think they are used to being around people, but none of them attacked or looked angry," FraserTorok said. Charles Hickman lives across the road and has called the SPCA several times. "We've been complaining for years," he said. "I kinda gave up when they gave me the run around. One branch would tell me to call another." Hickman said the incessant barking goes late into the night, and that the dogs are always on the narrow country road. Dogs were dropped off there over the years. They always run a couple of hundred yards alongside their master's vehicle when it leaves the premises. To his knowledge, the food is purchased as scraps from a nearby butchery. Over the last few days he has seen OPP come and go a couple of times. Hickman, who started to build a kennel with the man, doesn't believe deliberate intent to harm is at play. The former school teacher has told him he suffers from PTSD.
THE ISSUE: ANIMAL DISTRESS CHARGES IN BEACHBURG THE IMPACT: INVESTIGATION OPENS AFTER SOCIAL MEDIA UPROAR Derek Dunn/Metroland Dogs gather on the long driveway leading up to a home where some 40 others are allowed to roam free. The owner faces several distress-related charges under the provincial animal welfare legislation. "He doesn't want to do any harm to them," Hickman said. "A lot of people just don't realize that they are (behaving cruelly). Like the old lady with (too many) cats." Social media lit up soon after the video was posted. Lynn Perrier is founder of Reform Advocates for Animal Welfare (RAAW). She is following the issue and has contacted media outlets. Both she and an Ottawa media outlet have erroneously reported that SPCA seized the dogs and will
likely destroy them. When Metroland Media arrived at the Beachburg property, 130 km west of Ottawa, about 10 dogs ran alongside the vehicle barking. The owner, Peter Campbell, was heading into his house. "Would you mind if I don't say anything?" Campbell said. "Just until everything gets cleared up." No dogs followed the vehicle to the road. Melissa Kosowan is OSPCA spokesperson. On Aug. 31, she said

to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation the following statement is all that will be released at this time. "The welfare of these animals is our priority and we are taking the necessary steps within our legal authority to ensure they receive the care they require," Kosowan said in an email. "At this time, we have not removed any animals."
STORY BEHIND THE STORY
After reporter Derek Dunn saw video and learned that years of complaints have gone unheard, he visited the site of distressed dogs.

ARNPRIOR WELCOMES 2 NEW DOCTORS The Arnprior and area physician recruitment committee, the Arnprior and District Family Health Team and Arnprior Regional Health are excited to announce the arrival of two new family physicians to Arnprior this summer. "Dr. Janice Yau and Dr. Christopher Zadow, recently graduated family physicians, will join the Arnprior and District Family Health Team on Aug. 1, 2018. In addition to being the primary care physicians for patients from retiring physicians Dr. Villis and Dr. Kiskis, Dr. Yau and Dr. Zadow will have hospital privileges at Arnprior Regional Health," said a recent press release. "Dr. Yau and Dr. Zadow will not be taking on any new patients at this time as their focus during their first year will be on becoming familiar with existing patients and continuing to provide excellent primary care. Both Dr. Yau and Dr. Zadow are
looking forward to serving the local community as they have strong ties to the Ottawa Valley." The release says the Arnprior and area physician recruitment committee would like to thank the physician group for their efforts in recruiting these two new doctors. "Furthermore, a big thank you to the Town of Arnprior, Township of McNab Braeside and our community businesses for their financial support," says the release. "With these new additions, Arnprior will now have 15 family physicians including: Drs. Gordon, Schriver, Morrison, Boersma, Rivington, Suzuki, Becker, Kurian, Nejad, Fitzsimon, Fishman, Garcia and McCarthy. Their collective experience is 359 years, with the majority of those years in service to the primary care needs of our community. We are indeed thankful for their many years of dedicated service."
The organizations also expressed gratitude. "Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to Dr. Kiskis and Dr. Villis, who both retire this summer. Dr. Kiskis and Dr. Villis have been practicing medicine in Pakenham for approximately 45 years, operating a large family practice as well as following in-patients at Arnprior Regional Health. Dr. Villis has and will continue to serve as the medical director at the Grove. Dr. Villis and Dr. Kiskis' tremendous commitment, experience, patient-centred approach, and professional and warm rural office practice will be greatly missed by both patients and colleagues. We wish them all the best in their retirement, and thank them for their many years of service to our community," says the release. *If you are in need of a local family doctor, please register with Health Care Connect at 1-800-445-1822; or you can also visit the Arnprior and District Family Health Team website at www.arnpriorfht.ca to submit your name and contact information online.

Arnprior Regional Health/Submitt Arnprior's Aayla Spratt celebrated her birthday last week and asked her friends for something different. Instead of bringing presents each was asked for cash. The result was $115, which Aayla proudly donated to the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation to help purchase medical equipment. This is the third year Aayla has made this birthday gift to the foundation. Aayla (left) and her sister Mara, are pictured here with Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital nurses Jessica Harris, Nicole Papousek, Ashely Millett, and Natalie Blimkie along with executive director of the foundation Bruce Hill. Many people are unaware the government does not fund medical equipment in hospitals. Aayla and her family are aware, and taking action. Pictured is a vital sign monitor, which was purchased as a result of thoughtful gifts such as this from our community. "Thank-you Aayla Spratt and happy birthday!" said officials.

Local seniors will soon have their own space and programming designed specifically for them with the opening of the Seniors Active Living Centre in Arnprior on Oct. 1. A second location is set to open in McNab/ Braeside in early 2019. The Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) is a membership-based centre where seniors can participate in social, educational and recreational programming and drop-in activities that help support their physical, emotional and social well-being, in an environment that enables seniors to remain independent, active, healthy and socially engaged within their own communities. WATEr MAIN FLUShING – ALMONTE WArD Tuesday, September 4th, 2018 to Friday, October 19th, 2018 During the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance procedure is required under the Provincial Legislation and may result in temporary inconveniences to you such as reduced water pressure or red (discoloured) water. • Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. • If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system. • Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometres away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. • Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. • We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water. We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed. For more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

Metroland file photo OPP patrols on the water and pathways of Ontario are to the satisfaction of about 85 per cent of those who participated in a recent independent survey.
BOATERS, ATV RIDERS SATISFIED WITH OPP VISIBILITY DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Recreation vehicle users are largely satisfied with the patrols they see on Ontario's waterways and paths. An outside firm surveyed about 250 citizens who use recreation vehicles and found that about 85 per cent are "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the level of OPP visibility. The results come as no surprise to Blake Corbin, president of the Arnprior Fish and Game Club. He is in regular contact with people who boat, use ATVs and snowmobiles. The survey was well done, he said, and seems accurate. "It's a good survey," Corbin said. "On the marine side, they provide a decent service, what they have to do, given the large geography of the region. They do a decent job." He would like to see a greater willingness to report illegal activities. On the province's highways
and roads, OPP are asking for people to report distracted driving - especially cellphone use by drivers. The same holds true for snowmobilers and other recreation drivers. Corbin said too many are looking at mounted phones displaying maps. Phones are also sharing social media reports of OPP enforcement. If police are at a particular boat launch, someone will warn their Facebook friends, he said. And while some want to blame outsiders for any bad reputations on Calabogie Lake and other popular spots in the region, he says that is rarely the case. "It's always the locals that ruin it," Corbin said. "It used to be you could pack a drink or two on your way out the lake. You just can't do that anymore." He would like to see more constables dedicated to patrols but admits that it all comes down to the allocation of resources. "It'd be nice, but we all pay taxes."

RETAIL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
FOR AN AGENCY STORE IN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING COMMUNITIES: LCBO RFP# 2018-231 Kinburn LCBO RFP# 2018-232 White Lake LCBO RFP# 2018-238 Dunrobin
An excellent business opportunity is now available to established retailers in Kinburn, White Lake, Dunrobin. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is seeking a responsible, customer-focused retailer to operate an LCBO Agency Store in Kinburn, White Lake, Dunrobin. To qualify, the applicant must have an existing, currently operating retail business in the community and commit to operating the Agency store within established LCBO guidelines. To facilitate the sale of beverage alcohol products, the operator may be required to enter into separate commercial arrangements with the LCBO and domestic beer suppliers. The successful applicant will also be required to participate in a special LCBO server-training program to ensure the responsible sale of beverage alcohol products. Since 1962, the LCBO has authorized more than 200 Agency stores to serve communities which have requested service but where the local population is too small to support a regular LCBO or beer store. These Agency stores are operated by local retailers within their existing retail business. Agency store contracts are normally awarded for a five-year term. In communities where there is currently an Agency store, as the contract nears expiry the LCBO will take into consideration the fact that new businesses in the community may have been established and will allow an opportunity for all businesses in the community to compete for the next five-year term. Operating an LCBO Agency Store provides a retailer with an excellent opportunity to increase revenue and attract customers while providing local residents with beverage alcohol services. Agency stores also deliver economic benefits to the community in many cases through job creation and increased customer traffic for local merchants. Interested businesses must request by mail the application package for this competition before end of business day, Friday, September 14, 2018 and must quote the following information: RFP #2018-231 Kinburn Request for Application Package Procurement and Contract Management LCBO 1 Yonge Street, Suite 1404 Toronto, ON M5E 1E5

DON'T LET SEX-ED HIJACK SCHOOL DEBATE School's back, with at least some relief from the uncertainty whirling about the health and physical education curriculum. But by turning back the clock, the new provincial government is in danger of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. In a news release in late August, the government spelled out its plans for a provincewide consultation with parents in advance of implementing a new back-to-the-basics curriculum. There are both positives and negatives in the announcement co-made by Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Lisa Thompson. It's positive the government made its intentions known before the new school year began. And some of the aspects of the curriculum review are well deserving of scrutiny and debate. It's never a bad idea to consult parents (and the rest of the citizenry), but it has to be an inclusive process that guards against being hijacked by a vocal minority. It's positive that town halls are being held right across the province (the rural voice needs to be heard too), but exactly what 'telephone town halls' are and how effective they will be remains to be seen. Regarding the list of topics on the government's consult list, there isn't much argument over whether the curriculum should be reviewed to determine if Ontario's schools are doing enough to prepare students with needed job skills. Not every student is suited to go to university. More emphasis and stature should be put on learning skilled trades and new technologies. Most people surely agree that the curriculum could do more to educate students in important life skills such as financial literacy. And the question whether to ban cellphone use in the classroom is certainly worth debating. Discussing how to improve student performance in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics makes sense, especially considering the latest results of the standardized testing released last week. While there are some flaws in that process, it's obvious many Grade 6 students in the province aren't up to snuff when it comes to math skills. So it figures the curriculum should be re-evaluated. It's also reasonable for the review to include an examination of standardized testing to ensure the results aren't painting a false picture of student performance. In anticipation of changes, the government is making changes to the math curriculum, but the focus on "traditional formulas and memorization techniques" appears vague enough not to complicate things for teachers. Unfortunately that's not the case with the health and physical education curriculum. In a knee-jerk reaction to a few strident sex-ed objectors, teachers are being forced to revert to an out-of-date curriculum from the 1990s. The strides made in including such important topics as mental health, bullying, cyberstalking, sexting and the soon-to-be legalization of pot in the curriculum are being relegated to the back burner because of misguided concerns that discussing gender identity or making babies will scar our children. The school curriculum could do with a review. But people and the government shouldn't allow themselves to be sidetracked into focusing on the sex-ed issue. Despite attracting so much attention, it's only a small part of the equation. In fact it's not even the most important part of the health and physical education curriculum. Fill in the consultation surveys, attend the town halls and make detailed presentations if so inclined, but don't let apathy give the government an excuse to set a system-wide curriculum only a small group embraces.

BEWARE BACK TO SCHOOL TRAFFIC To the editor: The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind motorists that school buses have returned to our local roads. Motorists should be aware of the expected increase in pedestrians, cyclists and school buses, and give themselves extra commuting time. Students will no doubt be excited and may forget many of the safety rules required for safe travels. In accordance with the Highway Traffic Act motorists encountering a stopped school bus that
has its overhead red signal-lights flashing shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing. The minimum fine for failing to stop for a school bus is $400 and 6 demerit points. This applies whether you are meeting or following a school bus, and includes multi-lane roads. The only exception is when driving on a road with a median - traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop. Drivers should also be prepared to yield to student pedestrians and cyclists. Parents of students who will be walking or cycling to school are encouraged to speak with their children about the rules of the road that apply to them.

WOLF EVENT A HOWL OF A GOOD TIME, SAYS MICHAEL RUNTZ MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
One of the wildest sounds in nature is the howl of a wolf. Wolves howl to communicate with members of their own pack (which averages about seven individuals) and to advertise the limits of their territory. Over the millennia, their howls have invoked fear in the hearts of many, but today they have come to represent all that is wild. Their music stokes our imagination and stirs our soul. Recently I had the honour of conducting two public outings to hear eastern wolves. One Howl took place near Achray, for Algonquin Park, and the other, for Bonnechere Provincial Park, along the Basin Depot Road. For each Wolf Howl, I gave a PowerPoint presentation on wolf biology before leading the attendees into the wilds to hopefully hear wolves respond to my impersonations of their howls. Achray's Wolf Howl was held on Friday, Aug. 24, and its 83 participants packed the Achray Theatre. The previous day I located a pack not far from the theatre. Although the pack moved that night, the next morning I was fortunate to relocate it about six kilometres from where it was first encountered. After my presentation, I led the procession to where I had heard wolves earlier that day. After I howled several times, to my relief, the entire pack answered back. But they had moved about a kilometre to the east, so after enjoying their howls we drove closer to them. After a single howl, the pack answered back from about a half-kilometre away. To our surprise, a single wolf howled from about fifteen metres away! Under my headlamp's illumination, we could see its eyes glowing white. It howled and it barked, an indication it was unhappy to encounter an intruding wolf. For about two minutes, we exchanged howls, then I stopped when I felt that we had intruded into its space long enough. The next night I conducted the Bonnechere Wolf Howl. This was a special event for it was our 25th annual Wolf Howl. In honour of this special occasion, the Friends of Bonnechere put on a wonderful barbecue complete with a special 25th-anniversary cake. The weather was unsettled, and it showered during the fine meal. Despite the discouraging weather, about 250 people attended my talk and the following excursion. Two days earlier I had located a pack on the Basin Depot Road, so we stopped at this location. Unfortunately, the pack appeared

to be gone, and after an unsuccessful round of howling, we moved on. The second location yielded similar results, and with rain threatening, my hopes for success sank. Then, on my third attempt at a new location, an entire pack answered my howls! Almost all attendees heard the response, which went on for nearly half a minute. After I howled a second time, the pack responded even louder than the first time. While the world-famous Highway 60 Public Wolf Howls have been unsuccessful for
many years, my intimate Wolf Howls at Bonnechere and Achray are running at about an 80 per cent success rate. If you have never heard the howls of wild wolves, why not join us next year? Even if we don't hear wolves, I can guarantee it will be a howl of a good time! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

ENBRIDGE ASSISTS MCNAB/BRAESIDE IN SUPPORTING FIREFIGHTER TRAINING Enbridge Gas Distribution is partnering with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council to help McNab/Braeside Fire Department purchase firefighting training materials. "Safety is a priority at Enbridge and we are proud to support Ontario firefighters who share in our commitment to help keep our communities safe," said Peter O'Gorman, Enbridge Gas Distribution. Project Assist is a program that supplements existing training for Ontario volunteers and composite fire departments in the communities where Enbridge operates. This year's $100,000 donation will be shared by 20 Ontario fire departments, including McNab/Braeside Fire Department. Funds will be used to purchase educational materials for firefighters to enhance life-saving techniques. Since the launch of Project Assist in 2012, 120 grants have been provided to Ontario fire departments for additional firefighter training.
McNab/Braeside Fire Department/Submitted Enbridge Gas Distribution is partnering with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council to help McNab/Braeside Fire Department purchase firefighting training materials. "Ongoing firefighter training enables fire departments to deliver emergency services efficiently and to ensure firefighter safety is maintained," said Ross Nichols, Ontario Fire Marshal and chair of the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "The support that Project Assist provides is very helpful to the fire departments who receive it, and the volunteer firefighters who benefit from these educational resources. I very much appreciate Enbridge partnering with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire
Safety Council to make this program possible." "Training is a key component to providing safe and effective responses to an emergency situation," said McNab/Braeside fire Chief David Hartwick. "Our number 1 priority is the safety of the families within our community and our firefighters," said McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett. "Ensuring fire safety across our township's 256 square kilometres is a challenge that the dedication of our fire department continually meets."

NEW TOOLS, TRAINING FOR ARNPRIOR FIRE DEPARTMENT Arnprior firefighters have new tools at their disposal. The department recently received new, battery-powered extrication tools. Firefighters received in-service training from Code 4 Fire and Rescue Aug. 22. The new Jaws of Life tool(s) make it possible for firefighters to set up more quickly and do what is necessary to free people from entrapment following a vehicular accident. These tools can also be used by firefighters to rescue citizens from collapses of any kind or for self-rescue should there be a collapse at a structure fire. NEWS
WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? PARNEEL BUILDING JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com People driving down Russett Drive past the McNab/Braeside municipal office have noticed plenty of construction activity across the street lately. Two major projects are underway on the municipally-owned property at 2473 Russett Dr. The Parneel building is being turned into a recreation centre and a new township office is being built next to it. McNab/Braeside director of
public works Ryan Frew explained the municipal office will be a modern, fully accessible building on one floor. The raised area passerby see now will be the foyer of the new office, which will be L-shaped. On one side will be the township's administrative offices and on the other, council chambers. The fire department and public works garage will stay in their current locations across the road. Frew said council has had some discussions but no firm decisions over what to do with its current office. It's expensive to maintain and not completely ac-
cessible, which necessitated the move, he explained. "It would need significant upgrades to make it feasible to use." Frew said the project has experienced some delays and may not be finished by October. But it should definitely be complete by the end of the year, he said. Originally scheduled to be ready in the spring, the renovation of the Parneel building, which was bought by the township in 2012 (along with 92 acres),
is into the final touches. However, for safety and convenience reasons, the building is not likely to be available until the township office construction is complete. The Parneel project, which received a $150,000 Ontario150 Community Capital Program grant, provides a fully accessible central recreation and entertainment facility for McNab/Braeside. There is a main banquet hall with washroom, change room
and kitchen facilities added. The building will be able to host major gatherings, as well as such recreational pursuits as badminton, pickleball and yoga. It is also expected to house the McNab/Braeside Market, which is on a hiatus until renovations are complete. Future plans for the property include an outdoor park and trail system leading into the adjacent Alexander Stewart Provincial Park.
John Carter/Metroland The new McNab/Braeside township office is being built next to the Perneel building at 2473 Russett Dr. A foyer is being constructed in the centre of the L-shaped building.

McNab/Braeside Minor Ball has been given access to almost $2,000 to finish the steel roofing on the gazebo at McNab Centre Park. McNab/Braeside council approved the $1,916 allocation from reserves, at its Aug. 7 meeting. Mayor Tom Peckett thanked volunteers who put tarps over the unfinished roof to allow the gazebo to be used in a recent tournament. McNab/Braeside Minor Ball volunteers are hopeful the roof can be completed by Sept. 29, in time for a charity fundraising tournament they are organizing on behalf of a local child fighting cancer. Council approved the tournament and waived the fees for use of the park. It also agreed organizers could apply for a special occasion permit if they wished.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SERENDIPITOUS START LEADS TO PJ’S GOLDEN JUBILEE DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com In a sector where most businesses don’t cycle through year one, PJ’s Restaurant has done it 50 times. And in celebration, Arnprior’s beloved family spot will offer 50-cent drinks and a select menu of regular-portion favourites for just $5.50. “It’s our way of saying thank you for all the love and support,” said Joanne, whose Anas family has owned the Madawaska Boulevard business going back to when it was still Highway 17. “It’s a second home to a lot of people and a home to us,” said Jimmy, the other ’J’ in PJ’s. “We used to eat our lunch with a lot of the customers. I would pull up a stool with the police officers. We’d have family dinner right there.” Along with Peter, the eldest of the three siblings, the kids would watch and learn a lot over the years: About community, about family and friendship, and about business. People have come from far and wide to PJ’s. There’s the woman who meets her aunt from Ottawa

every Wednesday. Sens game-day fans from Pembroke. The lunch crowd from industrial park across the street, much busier back when it was 3,000 workers. Families after church. A certain newspaper’s Christmas party. Even a large number of famous people who passed through, not the least of which was hockey great Bobby Orr. Could Tasso, the family patriarch, have imagined so much change and success in his life? A boy with a Grade 6 education from a farm village in Greece musters the courage to voyage across the Atlantic at 16; works in Ottawa kitchens — in an industry he had no family background in — working his way up through the kitchen chain of command. Yet he dreamed bigger, scoping out the right spot in little Arnprior to buy what was called Vania in 1968, an ice cream joint he would expand to include Italian and Canadian — the town’s first pizza place. What are the values that drive someone — often an immigrant — like that? “You have to give the people what they want,” said Tasso, sitting under the warm sun on PJ’s
MAYOR AMONG FIRST CUSTOMERS AT PJ’S
Derek Dunn/Metroland The Anas family - Peter, left, Tasso, Jim, Litsa, and Joanne - welcomes friends and customers from far and wide to help celebrate 50 years in the restaurant business on Sept. 8. deck. Then, making the same point several different ways: “You have to work hard to get ahead.” Joanne is quick to point out that it is her mother, Litsa — off fixing potted flowers while the reporter hangs around — who is responsible for many of the best decisions. She and her husband arrived from Greece the day before, ready to celebrate the family business’s 50th. Tasso worked his magic in the back with family friend and partner Frank Rozakos, who is there to this day. Litsa worked the front-ofhouse, the cash register-boss and
disarming hostess. “She is this business,” Joanne said. Tasso is her senior by nine years. But within six months of meeting (during a chance encounter in Carleton Place where Tasso was collecting church memberships) they married. Turns out they were from the same tiny village in Greece, called Dafni. They never knew of one another until Canada. That, as they say, is the wonder of serendipity. PJ’s anniversary is from 12 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.
In 1968 the property where PJ’s Restaurant sits was called Tower Lunch. It was a small restaurant with just 75 seats, including a coffee shop and diningroom where people came for late-night ice cream cravings. It was also owned by Stan Reid, father of current Mayor David Reid. Ten-year-old David remembers going that year after the Anases took over and renamed it Vania Restaurant. His sister Nancy waitressed. “I was probably one of the first customers. For some reason I remember the Flavour Crisp chicken,” David said. “I have a long-time connection with the family. The parents are still there working, too. “It’s hard work, long hours, attention to detail — it all matters. And it shows; 50 years later and it shows.” In about 1973, the Anas bought the property outright. In 1977, the name was changed to PJ’s.

SCHOOL WOULD BE DIFFERENT WITHOUT AUDREY THERE YOUNG MARY THANKFUL FOR HER TEACHER, FRIENDS, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Filled with a mixture of anticipation and dread, I headed off to the Northcote School for the first day back after a long summer vacation. I loved going to school, but this year would be very different. My sister Audrey had graduated from the En-
trance Class, and she wouldn't be there to look after me. Who would walk me to school through the bush out our long lane to the Northcote Side Road? Who would make sure I had my lunch tucked into my book bag every morning, setting it on the table at the back of the school room at the ready when Miss Crosby nodded that morning classes were over? And so that first day, my stomach was in knots. But Joyce and Velma, my best friends, were there, and they didn't seem the least bit concerned. Of course, Velma had an older sister still there, and Joyce never had a sister to begin with. It looked like the last
thing on Miss Crosby's mind was whether or not I was upset. She set right to getting us all seated. I noticed she was careful not to sit my brother Emerson beside Cecil, but settled them in different rows well apart. They spelled trouble if put together! I had hoped to get seated beside either Velma or Joyce, but Miss Crosby gave them seats in the second row. I was left standing at the back of the room waiting to be called. Miss Crosby next sat the Senior Fourths, but leaving the front desk empty. Once everyone else was in place, Miss Crosby finally called my name and pointed to the only place left in
the entire room, that empty desk. What was left of the morning passed quickly, and then it was time for lunch. Miss Crosby nodded at Velma's sister, and she went to the table at the back of the room, took my lunch bag and brought it to me. She made sure I had a place to sit beside Joyce and Velma. The knot in my stomach began to ease. Everything was working out just fine, as we laughed and talked about going back to school and the first day. When it was time to go home, Velma's sister said I was to walk home with them. She said then all I
would have to do was cut across the twenty-acre field that separated our two farms leading right to our house. She knew how I was frightened to walk through the deep bush that filled our long lane into our barnyard. That night after we had said our prayers around Mother's knee I went to the braided rug beside our bed. I knelt down and had a little talk with God, as I often did. Usually it was to ask a special favour. But tonight was different. Tonight it was to give thanks. I gave a prayer of thanks to having a teacher like Miss Crosby, and a friend like Velma who had an older sister who had reached out to me.
I went to bed with a much lighter heart than I had in the morning, and when I got out of bed the next day, my fears were gone, and I couldn't wait to get back to the Northcote School. IS THAT PLACE AN ART MUSEUM? IT DESERVES TO BE MULLED OVER DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com It was a beautiful afternoon for a bike ride along the trail that runs parallel to William Street in Arnprior. Take it far enough - well past the former rail bridge over the Madawaska River and under Highway 417 bridge by the hydro dam - and you'll reach Pakenham. It stays smooth and lovely to Blakeney, too. I stopped under the highway, fascinated. The graffiti under Highway 417 is amazingly well done. Not that I know much about graffiti. None of my art history courses saw fit to include it, other than Roman political graffiti.* Most portray the feeling one would expect dominates today's graffiti artist: snarky, insolent. But also teen angst and alienation. Profound sadness, even. Some self-harm and violence scattered among the empty aerosol and other cans. Plenty of colours though. And the depth of field is spot on. Perhaps they interact when humans are not around, not unlike Night at the Museum. Is that place an art museum? It deserves to be mulled over at least. I'll assume the artist - she or he, or more likely they - is from the city. Maybe not. A big part of me hopes it is homegrown talent. *Boring, totally not as good as today's.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The quest for The Vince Herrick Cup begins anew when the whistle blows on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The 2018-2019 Arnprior
Oldtimers Hockey League (AOHL) welcomes players new and old to September registration nights. The age 40 and up league sees all four teams play on Tuesday nights throughout the winter, game times are 8:30 and 9:40 p.m., ending with a
playoff weekend in late March, followed by a banquet of snacks and beverages at restaurant in town. Longtime player and organizer Alan Rowsom says players at all skill levels are welcome. The aim is to have fun, enjoy a little com-
petition, and get a healthy workout. He said AOHL is a step above shinny, offering referees, a scoreboard operator, and the guarantee of goalies; but also a better cardio experience. "It's a different game than shinny," he said. "The
joke we use is: Backchecking is taking a faceoff in the other end." It is non-contact, no slapshots, and games run 50 minutes on B rink at Nick Smith Centre, Glenn Arthur Arena. The cost is $340 per player, $170 per
goaltender. The draft to decide team rosters is Sept. 25. Registration nights are from 6 to 8 p.m., Sept. 11 and 18, at Mountain Creek Golf Course. Or call Alan at 613623-5585, or email alan.rowsom@gmail.com.
