PARTNERS, USERS BOOSTING TRAIL EFFORT JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The need for community partners and support from the public is growing in importance as uncertainty surrounds future funding for the Algonquin Trail. At their last meeting, members of the Algonquin Trail advisory committee say they are encouraged that people are already perceiving the former CP Railbed as an important multiuse trail. As well, several user groups are partnering with the county to upgrade the trail. Jason Davis, Renfrew County's manager of forestry and geographic information systems (GIS), said the committee is leaving the public to decide whether they want to use the 218-kilometre trail before it is finished. While sections of the trail, especially around the towns, have been treated with stone dust, most of the sections yet to be worked on are covered in rough
during snowmobile season and during maintenance, and be accessible to paramedics. Open sections include the route through Arnprior, Renfrew to north of Cobden and Pembroke to Petawawa, with the focus this fall on readying the Renfrew-to-Arnprior section. Next door, Lanark County still has the 'No Trespassing' signs up as it keeps the trail closed until its whole 62 kilometres is ready to be opened later this fall. However, there have been reports of significant numbers of walkers, bicyclists, ATVers and horse riders already using the trail. There have been complaints about riders not cleaning up after their horses on the trail. Lanark County will receive a report this month recommending it follow Renfrew County's lead and partner with local ATV clubs on the trail. "I think that's going to be very welcome in terms of getting the ATV folks in-
volved because they not only contribute countless hours to keeping the trail open, but they also have an enforcement role which is important in this enterprise," said Lanark County Warden John Fenik. Another example of "good partnerships" enhancing the trail is the county's agreement with the Calabogie and District Snowmobile Club regarding the bridge over Dochert Creek in McNab/Braeside, said Davis. The county is providing the decking and siding material, and the snowmobilers are providing the volunteer labour to improve the structure. Just up the line, the county is replacing the bridge over Quinn's Creek, near River Road in Horton. Renfrew County has allowed two construction companies to use small sections of the trail in Renfrew and Arnprior for storing equipment and gravel during major projects this year and next. In Renfrew, Reeve Peter Emon reports Bonnechere Excavating Inc. is providing bushing and grading on the trail from Renfrew to River Road in Horton as compensation. While in Arnprior, Thomas Cavanagh Construction prefers to pay rent for the use of a small section close to

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A Renfrew woman killed in a motorcycle crash south of Calabogie Sunday, Sept. 9 is being remembered for her generosity and anti-poverty activism. Joanne Ciphery, 54, was a passenger on a motorcycle that went off Highway 511 north of the White Lake Road intersection about 2 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver Brian Robinson, 57, of Pembroke, was airlifted to Ottawa Hospital with major injuries. "She was an amazing person ... with a heart the size of a house," said Felicite Stairs, a founding member of the Renfrew County Poverty Action Network (RCPAN). "She's a huge loss." "She was always advocating for other people. She'll be sorely missed," said RCPAN executive director Lyn Smith. "Our hearts are with her two daughters." Many people's enduring
memory of Ciphery is of her bustling around the kitchen at Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church in Renfrew overseeing the cooking of community suppers. "She was a driving force behind those suppers," said Stairs. "She was a great cook," she added, noting she had just won several ribbons at the Renfrew Fair for her culinary and craft/sewing exhibits. Stairs said the last time she saw Ciphery was Saturday at the Trinity-St. Andrew's booth at the fair, where both were volunteering. Not only was Ciphery the custodian at the church, she volunteered for many of its causes. She was also a tireless supporter of the Renfrew Legion and had been planning a work bee for Saturday, Sept. 15. That has been cancelled and the Legion is considering holding a future event in honour of Ciphery. As a single parent in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ciphery had first-hand experi-
ence with poverty and became actively involved in the Renfrew Coalition Against Poverty. Stairs said she was "always taking care of people ... feeding them. She was larger than life." Smith said Ciphery had a weak spot for anyone in a tough situation. "She was always asking if she could do anything to help ... it was always out of the goodness of her heart." Smith remembers Ciphery organizing community Christmas parties, ensuring a full turkey dinner was served and that Santa Claus showed up with gifts for the youngsters. "There was always tons of food," she said. "It must have been a lot of work for her. She was such a hard worker for other people." In a statement on the Renfrew Legion website, public relations official Kate Windle called Ciphery a "longtime, caring, kind and giving community leader, who guided our children and befriended everyone she met." She praised Ciphery's "generous spirit" and "her constant desire to make our world a better place," adding she hoped that philosophy will be "carried forward in
those who were fortunate to know her. "God bless Joanne for saying what others fear to say and doing what other would never dare to attempt." Windle noted that Ciphery's latest volunteer endeavour was to host a now cancelled work bee Sept. 15 to clean the interior of the Legion from stem to stern in preparation for Nov. 11 activities. She said the Legion is looking into holding a Joanne Ciphery fundraiser so it will be able to pay a team of professional cleaners, plumbers and pipefitters to do the necessary upgrades and repairs. Smith has "fond memories" of Ciphery's sunny disposition and lovely smile. "It's so sad, but at least she left a footprint on earth. It shows you should do what you can do because you never know how much more time you have." The fatal crash is being investigated by Lanark County OPP officers and OPP Technical Traffic Collision investigators. The highway was closed for about five hours. Ciphery is survived by her daughters Sophie and Brittany.

LARGE CROWD RAISES TRAFFIC CONCERNS AT FAIRGROUNDS SUBDIVISION MEETING DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com It was one of the largest crowds at an Arnprior town hall meeting in at least a decade. The vast majority were there - filling every chair, lined against three walls, and spilling into the hallway for the former fairgrounds subdivision public meeting. And most of them were concerned most of all with increased traffic pressure on busy Daniel Street. The Sept. 10 meeting began with town planner Robin Paquette talking about the planned 151-unit neighbourhood behind Nick Smith Centre. Vehicles will exit it from Galvin and Thomas streets. However, residents living between the community centre and Daniel say turning left toward the Arnprior Shopping Centre is already a long, dangerous process. Residents
living off Charles Street say the same. Adding a couple of hundred more cars will only make it that much worse, many in the well-behaved crowd indicated. "There is a lot of danger and a lot of accidents," Elizabeth Neadow said. "Daniel cannot withstand an additional 300 cars. You have a problem with everything being concentrated." A solution under consideration is to have staggered traffic lights near the intersection at Daniel and Edey streets. It would be a first in town having a close group of lights work in co-ordination to control traffic. Other residents talked about dangers for children walking to school; extending Isabella Street behind Arnprior Villa to Winners Circle as an option for drivers; improving painted lines on the roads; and increased traffic to the area when the
LCBO relocates. It was asked if the water and wastewater treatment plants can handle all the new developments in various parts of town. Mayor David Reid assured them that the town has "lots of capacity" and more is gained as work along William and McLachlin streets continues. He said extending Isabella - which parallels Daniel through to Baskin Drive would need the approval of the Catholic church, which owns property along the route. He was asked about timelines: construction would likely begin in spring with roads completed first, then houses "should sell fairly quickly (within two years)." A mother was "very upset" that there is little greenspace for kids in the area. They are forced onto streets to play, yet the municipality rejected a park in the fairgrounds subdivision in lieu of cash for a

Another asked for a dog park in town and more parks within walking distance. Another would like emergency service orga-
nizations to comment on record about the development. Still another felt approval is given in these situations before solutions are reached. Reid said reports are in draft form un-
til solutions are in place. The subdivision is not as dense as it could be, he added. The houses and lots are fairly large. Council will vote on it at a future meeting.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A descendant of the original settlers that came over from Scotland with Archibald McNab is running for Arnprior council to bring the community closer together. "We go back a long way; my wife's family too," said Danny Martin from his home overlooking the Ontario Power Generation weir. "I've been all over the world with the military and I believe we live in the most beautiful place but we see it every day. I want to give back and be hands on and make it a tight-knit community again. If you want a bedroom community then I'm not for you." Martin, who was the town's last door-to-door milkman, works for The Royal Canadian Legion national headquarters. He wants to see more attention given to Cubs, Scouts and service organizations such as the Lions and Le-
Derek Dunn/Metroland Danny Martin gion by the town's recreation department. Let them meet at the underused Nick Smith Centre, he said. When it comes to child poverty, he disagrees with the municipality taking the lead. Martin would
pressure MPP John Yakabuski and MP Cheryl Gallant to do more; Arnprior has the highest child poverty rate in Renfrew county, one of the more impoverished regions of the province. "They are the people in
charge of these areas. We need to put their feet to the fire," he said. "I think communities have a lot more power than they think. Let's get the system working in our favour." He said isn't afraid to address tough issues head on. However, when it comes to an outdoor rink Martin isn't convinced the town needs one. He would ask for a study proving the viability. Given that Braeside is building a new one, and the maintenance costs could be high, he is skeptical. Box stores like Walmart should be encouraged where Daniel and Highway 417 meet. More manufacturing should be attracted to the industrial park. And brownfields - often former gasoline stations rendered contaminated - should be converted to parking lots. "I don't know why we've stopped talking about this kind of stuff. We've given up on all that," Martin said. "Arnprior is not a satellite for Ottawa."

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com The Town of Arnprior is coming out with an app this month. A common theme among many new candidates running in the municipal election is the lack of communication between the municipal government and residents. They would like to see a
bigger presence on social media, specifically Facebook, and offering more clear and concise information sharing. During a discussion that the Aug. 27 council meeting on the topic of corporate succession planning, chief administrative officer Michael Wildman said a downloadable application for mobile devices is just about ready to
go.
"We're on the cusp of releasing an Arnprior app that will be usable, dynamic and adaptable," Wildman said. "We've been working on this for a while. It is 95 per cent ready." He said social media "does consume time" and that senior management has been discussing a strategy, with several staff mem-
bers expected to take on more duties; it is too much for the marketing and economic development officer to do on top of regular duties. He thinks it could lead to a full-time job in the future. "That's where we are heading," Wildman said. "Technology makes things better in many ways but does not always make your job easier."
Coun. Dan Lynch asked if information sharing is first met with Wildman's approval. "Nothing gets posted online before I see it," he said. It is projected that 10 staff members will retire at town hall over the next five years. The succession plan, in part, details ways to help junior workers move up the corporate ladder.

JOB-SEEKERS, JOBS MATCHMAKING FLAWED Given the number of help wanted/we're hiring signs sprouting around town lately, it appears there are plenty of jobs going begging. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be enough workers either skilled enough or motivated to take them. With the disconnect between Renfrew County's actual unemployment rate of close to 10 per cent and the amount of unfilled job postings, it's obvious we've been doing something wrong when it comes to preparing youth for the workforce. The problem, which has been afflicting us for some time, appears to be getting worse. If we don't address it soon, employers might have to start resorting to robots instead of human workers to fill some of these empty positions. If we can find enough workers to create robots, that is. A Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) study released last week paints a gloomy picture when it comes to the country's ability to match workers and jobs. Almost 40 per cent of small- and medium-sized Canadian businesses are having difficulty finding new employees. An estimated 400,000 jobs were unfilled at the start of this year. As 250,000 Canadian construction workers near retirement, only half of them will be replaced if something doesn't change. And it's not just that one sector. Manufacturing and retail are also having trouble finding employees (so much for the contention raising the minimum wage would kill jobs). Arnprior Aerospace has had signs up along busy thoroughfares for months appealing for workers. Madawaska Hardwood Flooring, ParaMed, Groves Park Lodge, Smiths Construction, No Frills, Rexall, Macs and Timmy's have all been seeking employees recently. Ask any roofer or most other tradesperson in town, and they'll tell you they'd give their right arm for more competent workers. What to do about the labour shortage? No one sector can come up with solutions on its own. Governments, educators, parents, employers and employee groups all have roles to play to make the jobs going unfilled more accessible and appealing to those out of work. Not everyone can spend their working lives developing new video games, taste-testing scotch or binge-watching television programs. Most jobs have perks and attractions, but they need to be publicized if a workplace is to become a destination of choice. Educators and parents should be open to admiring a wide spectrum of jobs instead of focusing on an elite few. Not everyone is suited to go to university. Scholarships and bursaries should be shared more fairly with those who are not taking the academic route to the workforce. Governments should provide better incentives for students to go into the skilled trades and give them a financial break if they're studying in areas in which there are labour shortages. Employers need to improve their game too, putting more effort into making workplaces an enjoyable place to be and responding to modern employees' growing desire for work-lifestyle balance. Those hiring should also take a chance on less qualified workers and newcomers to Canada and provide training so they can contribute, instead of shying away from them as indicated in the BDC study. And more employers should be following the lead of companies such as Shopify, IBM and other tech firms seeking out employees with smarts, drive and natural curiosity and training them instead of automatically taking the best educated or most experienced. New approaches like that to training and hiring are obviously necessary if all those empty job positions are to be filled.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH To the editor: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and for the 1,500 children and teens diagnosed with cancer each year, it is an important time for us all to consider what we can do to help children live long, healthy lives. A cancer diagnosis can be devastating for anyone, but it is particularly incomprehensible when a child is facing cancer. While childhood cancers account for less than one per cent of all cancers diagnosed in Canada, they take a significant toll on Canadian families. Childhood cancer is the number 1 cause of diseaserelated death in Canadian children past infancy and for those children who survive their diagnosis, two out of every three will suffer long-term side effects from their treatment. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, there is
a lot to cope with. Organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society can provide reliable information through the Cancer Information Service, peer support for parents through a variety of programs and transportation to treatment through Wheels of Hope. But the reality is a childhood cancer diagnosis is life-altering and, simply, one child with cancer is one too many. The good news is progress has been made and continues to be made every day. In the 1980s, the fiveyear survival rate for childhood cancer was 71 per cent. Today, this has risen to 83 per cent because of investments in research that have led to more effective diagnoses and treatment. Thanks to donors to the Canadian Cancer Society, we have invested more than $50 million in the last 15 years, supporting more than 170 research projects to help children survive cancer and thrive well beyond. A recent example is Dr. Rod Rassekh and Dr. Colin
Ross who developed a genetic test to predict which children are likely to sustain heart damage as a result of their chemotherapy treatment. By identifying these atrisk children, doctors can switch them to a safer chemotherapy drug that will effectively treat their cancer and improve their longterm heart health. We are grateful for the ongoing support from our community and partners in addressing all cancers, including childhood cancer. We have made strides but there is much more work to do and we need your help. I encourage you to get involved through volunteering or supporting our Gifts for the Cure aimed at investing in game-changing research and support programs for children with cancer and their families. Together we can make a difference. For more information, please visit cancer.ca.

A CATERPILLAR WITH A MOST UNUSUAL DIET WE SHOULD ALL THANK THESE CATERPILLARS FOR THEIR SERVICE, SAYS MICHAEL RUNTZ MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
Frequently we generalize about nature. For example, it is oft times stated that owls fly at night. While most do, certain species most notably snowy and northern hawk owls - hunt during the day. Another generalization is that caterpillars only eat leaves. While generally true, I recently encountered a butterfly whose caterpillar is
anything but vegetarian. I met the butterfly on the Barron Canyon Road in Algonquin Park, where I was photographing woolly alder aphids on speckled alder branches. There are many types of aphids but all are small insects possessing a drill-like proboscis for extracting sugar-rich sap from plants. Aphids are complex animals whose life history includes live birth (viviparity), the production without male participation (parthenogenesis) of several generations comprised solely of flightless females, and ultimately the creation of a winged generation comprised of both sexes that mate and lay eggs that overwinter. From these eggs the following spring a new generation of wingless females arises. Woolly alder aphids are
Michael Runtz/Submitted The Harvester is the only butterfly in North America to have a carnivorous caterpillar. similar to other aphids with one major difference: They exude white filaments that cover their body in a woolly coat. As a result, we often mistake them for fungus. As if that appearance was not protection enough, woolly alder aphids have bodyguards. Carpenter ants tend to them, protecting them
from danger. Like professional bodyguards, the ants are paid for their service. Aphids secrete sugarrich droplets from their abdomen that the ants eat. Like farmers tending their cows, the ants "milk" the aphids, stroking them with their antennae to stimulate them into releasing their reward.
The alders were in shade and a gusty breeze kept moving the branches, making photography difficult. After half an hour I managed to attain a few reasonable images and was about to leave when a small orange and black butterfly flew by. It was a harvester, a butterfly I'd seen only a few times previously. These butterflies are unique in North America in being carnivorous as caterpillars. Harvester caterpillars eat - as you likely guessed - woolly alder aphids! The harvester flew erratically up and down the road. I followed it as best I could but at one point it appeared to be gone. But then it reappeared and flew back into the alder from which it had originally flown. I ran back, hoping to see it lay its eggs among the aphids. Several times the butterfly flitted around aphid-covered branches but whenever it tried to land, carpenter ants seemed to drive it away. Finally it settled down next to a group of unguarded
aphids and soon appeared to be laying eggs. After completing its task, the tiny harvester flew out of the alder and landed on bracken growing along the roadside. It rested for a few minutes before flying again, this time vanishing from sight, perhaps looking for another batch of woolly alder aphids to visit. The great entomologist Stephen Marshall once wrote that if aphids had no predators, parasites, or diseases, one female could produce 600 billion descendants in a single season. I think we should all thank harvesters for their service! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series Wild by Nature, and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

KIDS FIND REPLICA HANDGUN NEAR BASKETBALL COURT DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com An Arnprior resident told social media that her son had found a gun near the caged basketball court last week. Ashley Nicole Green issued a warning on the Facebook page What's up, Arn-
prior? for parents to teach their children gun safety. Her son Damien found what she believed was a gun hidden in an area where many kids play. "The cops came and collected it and informed the kids that it was real and even had three bullets in it," Green wrote. "Please teach children about gun safety
no matter what." OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge said police responded to the park on Thomas Street South and seized the item. "After further examination by a firearms examiner, it has been learned the item is a starter's pistol, or a replica handgun," Sawbridge said. "We continue to investigate in the event the item is linked to any outstanding cases or crimes." Anyone with more information is asked to call Const. Jeff Bookholt at 1888-310-1122.

SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@ metroland.com A historic Arnprior business has been overhauled and the response is overwhelmingly positive. Clancy's Drug Store pharmacist/owner Samantha Boualavong took over the business in 2016 and improvement work has been ongoing. "Clancy's has been transformed into a modern apothecary that uniquely blends the beautiful heritage character of downtown Arnprior with all the elements of a progressive pharmacy," says a press release. "The majority of the improvements and upgrades were done internally," said
Boualavong. "There's more technology, including new computer software that tracks inventory." More phone lines have been added, as well as new stock, including a whole home health care section. "We've added modern, progressive features to the store but are very emphatic about keeping the old world feel," she said, noting the business has been an established pharmacy for more than 100 years. "All improvements have been implemented to allow us to facilitate our work flow and increase the volume of prescriptions that we can do but still maintain a lot of patient/pharmacist interaction and staff interaction," said Boualavong.
Older customers are pleased they can still call in and speak with someone, while younger or more tech savvy patients appreciate the new online options available. She said it is important to her to check in with patients, not only as medication is being dispensed, but also to follow up afterwards. New services include online prescription refills and after-hours pharmacist direct access, immunization, home visits, and diabetes, smoking cessation, and weight loss management. Boualavong and husband Mark St. John live in Arnprior and appreciate being able to offer the community an independent local pharmacy.
She praised the former owners of the business. "We've chosen to keep the Clancy's name, it's Janet's legacy and it's part of Arnprior," she said. Boualavong says she, along with customers, really appreciate the staff members who go above and beyond. As well, customers have been incredibly supportive. "Our patients have been outstanding," she said. "They're just so loyal and dedicated." She is also a certified diabetes educator and an herbalist. Store hours have been extended (9 a.m.-7 p.m.) and a customer loyalty program has been implemented. "They really deserve
credit," said Arnprior senior Rose Marie Gesner. "They worked really hard and they have so much to offer seniors." She praised the excellent service and new look, which includes an accessible ramp and wider aisles. "People on scooters can go in there, go up and down the aisles and people can just pass by them." Gesner is now able to get

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com When nominations opened for the Oct. 22 municipal elections, candidates were cautioned that serving as a municipal councillor is much more complicated than it used to be a generation ago. New duties, liability rules and codes of conduct, as well as lack of privacy on social media, compel councillors to be more careful in what they say and do. That was made clear Aug. 29 when Renfrew County council accepted a report from its integrity commissioner, Guy Giorno. He ruled that Warden Jennifer Murphy had contravened council's code of conduct by threatening on Facebook to sue an unidentified person who had filed an earlier complaint (no lawsuit was ever filed). However, Giorno, who made it clear he wasn't speculating whether Mur-
phy had cause to sue, did not feel the breach warranted a penalty, especially given an apology was provided. He did suggest that it be emphasized to councillors, in future code of conduct training, the importance of allowing complainants to operate free from reprisal and the threat of reprisal. Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon took the chair temporarily during county council discussion of the report. In a statement, Murphy admitted her passion sometimes gets the better of her. She indicated her words in this instance were ill-advised and promised to be guided by the code of conduct in the future. Several county councillors questioned the cost and timing of the report, coming out less than two months prior to the municipal election. However, Murphy does not have to face the electorate because she has been acclaimed to
another term as mayor of Bonnechere Valley. Giorno's report revealed that Murphy made the lawsuit threat in a Facebook message in 2017 to an unidentified relative of the subject. Giorno explained that "threatening a lawsuit against someone who submitted, is believed to have submitted, or might possibly submit a Code complaint is prohibited by paragraph 9.2(b)." That paragraph reads: "Neither staff nor any member of council shall take, threaten to take, discharge, discipline, personally attack, harass, intimidate, etc. a person who has reported a violation of this Code of Conduct." He went on to state: "The Respondent's threat to sue was a reprisal, and paragraph 9.2(b) was placed in the Code to prevent reprisals." Reprisals and threats of reprisal "undermine the purpose of the Code and may have a chill-
ing effect on future complaints," he added. Giorno took into account Murphy's explanation that she did not believe she was threatening or intimidating the complainant or the family member, only that she wanted to apologize to the latter because she would be cutting off contact if a lawsuit was filed. He said Murphy had acknowledged that her communication was open to being taken badly, offered to take steps to "mitigate this error," and apologized to the complainant's family member. Despite a request by Murphy, Giorno said he isn't publicly naming the complainant. Last fall he provided county council with interim reports on the two earlier "related" complaints, one by the unnamed private citizen and the other by North Algona Wilberforce Mayor Deborah Farr. Giorno, who is the in-

CHEST NUTS CAP EXCITING SEASON WITH TERRY FOX WALK
TERRY FOX JUNIOR AMBASSADOR
SUSAN MILLS Priorchestnuts@ hotmail.com Wow! What an exciting ninth season on the water paddling our worries away. The season began with Arnprior Chest Nuts supporting the Hike for Hospice in Renfrew; beautiful weather and a great community event. A few years ago, we as a team challenged ourselves to participate in the International Breast Cancer Participatory Festival to be held in 2018 in Florence, Italy. The Festival happens every four years and is an international non-competitive participatory event targeting Breast Cancer Survivors' teams who engage in Dragon Boat activities as post-operative rehabilitation. Born from the idea of a Canadian sports medicine physician, Doctor Don McKenzie about 20 years ago, Dragon Boat paddling has become a rehabilitation therapy for tens of thousands of women and men worldwide who have undergone treatment. The Florence 2018 Festival involved 129 teams from 17 countries, and for the very first time all the continents were represented. There were over 3,000 participants between the ages of 20 and 90 paddling together on the Arno participating in the exciting Dragon Boat races. There were also a number of

Preparations to organize, prepare and fundraise began in 2015, so that we could allow all survivors the opportunity to participate this event. Along the journey, we were provided with logistical challenges, health issues, blustery spring weather that made paddling on White Lake interesting at times but we persevered and arrived in Florence ready to take on the world! It was so exciting to paddle against teams from Australia, Argentina/Brazil, Great Britain, and the United States. As each round progressed, we raced against teams with times closer to ours, so it

made for exciting finishes for those watching along the sidelines. As always, we were "First in Our Lane". The most emotional moment of the festival was the Flower Ceremony, where we swayed to music and reflected on all who have been affected by breast cancer or other major illnesses. We then tossed pink flowers into the water to celebrate survival and to remember those who did not survive. There were no dry eyes and lots of hugs were given to all participants and supporters lined along the Arno River. On returning home, there was no rest for the weary. The Chest Nuts participated in the Arnprior Dragon Boat Festival and enjoyed racing at Robert Simpson Park. If you have not been to this festival, keep the date of July 20, 2019 open; we will see you there! We continued to prac-
tice twice a week on White Lake and enjoyed providing dragon boat rides at the White Lake Marina Open House. Our last festival was Rideau Canoe Club. We were fortunate to have a few ladies from the Arnprior Dragon Boat Club and the Ottawa River Canoe Club. If we are missing paddlers we try and provide an opportunity for other ladies to join us depending on the requirements of the festival. Our last event is walking in the Terry Fox Run, which is on Sept. 16. As the days grow shorter our time on the water draws to a close, we are so fortunate to have the support of the Ottawa Valley community and look forward to our 10th season next year. If you are a breast cancer survivor and want to try dragon boating, please contact us at priorchestnuts@hotmail.com.
Debra-Lee Stafford/Submitted Arnprior Mayor Dave Reid congratulates Cali Groulx, a Grade 6 student at Saint John XXIII School, who has been named the Junior Ambassador for the Terry Fox Run of Arnprior. The run will be Taking place Sunday, Sept. 16 at the brand new location - Robert Simpson Park. "Come on out residents of Arnprior and surrounding areas to help us reach our goal of 10,500 this year, which represents $1 per resident," says organizers.

L'ARCHE ARNPRIOR KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN WITH BARBECUE
295 ALBERT. ST. Derek Dunn/Metroland Gathered at the recent barbecue showing off plans for the MacLachlin Street home are, from left, Mayor David Reid, Shawn Gibson, Jeannette Fraser, and Greg Hotte.
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com L'Arche Arnprior launched a campaign to raise funds for an expansion of the home at 33 MacLachlin St. L'Arche is an international federation dedicated to the creation and growth of homes, programs, and support networks with people who have intellectual disabilities. A barbecue for family, friends and the community held Aug. 20 saw the unveiling of plans for the $75,000 renovation. Members of L'Arche, such as Shawn Gibson, con-
tributed ideas to the expansion, which is part functional and part esthetic. For instance, more natural light will be drawn into the back portion of the home. Greg Hotte is senior development manager at L'Arche Canada Foundation. He said the launch is, in part, a chance to enjoy Valley Roots burgers, but also to meet more neighbours and apologize in advance for any noise or inconvenience when construction begins. "It's a great way to meet the neighbours and share some of our plans," Hotte said. Mayor David Reid's
daughter, Lauren, has intellectual disabilities, making him intimately aware of the good work done by L'Arche and other service providers in town. "This is a great service you are providing, so I'll get on board really quickly with this one," Reid said. The highly popular Glow With Us event takes place for a second time, on Sept. 28. Last year 300 to 400 people covered in glow bands walked or ran two- or five-kilometres through the streets of Arnprior in support of the organization. For more, check out larchearnpiror.org.

“HAVE A GOOD TIME”
St. John Chrysostom Church in Arnprior has been swathed in green mesh for the last four months. What's going on is the second of a two-phase project to prevent chunks of stone from crashing to the ground. Phase 1 saw the main bell tower taken care of by masons in 2016. Phase 2 should be finished before winter sets in.
JUST THE FACTS • An Ottawa-based mason company specializing in old stone churches and other buildings is repairing mortar work that has deteriorated. About six to 10 workers have been at it since May. Visible cracks and pieces that have broken off forced the parish to take out a bank loan of almost $1 million to do the work. • The hope is to see the façade made safe for another 50 years or more. The parish will hold fundraisers and is hoping the greater community will appreciate the structure's significance and also contribute. No plans are in place for specific events just yet. There are no government grants available to help defray costs.
Derek Dunn/Metroland The Catholic church in Arnprior is under major repair mode this summer, phase two of a two-phase project.

Tara Gesner/Metroland Top: It was a lovely day to be on the water. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Chats Lake Community Boat hosted a group of boaters from the Manotick Antique and Classic Boat Club. Many boaters love old wooden crafts like this one. Bottom: In total, six classic boats - the majority of them mahogany - took part in a three-hour tour, which included Chats Lake and Norway Bay. Kevin Hayes, a member of the Manotick club, arranged the event, leading the procession up the mouth of the Madawaska River.

OPINION
SEPTEMBER BROUGHT A RETURN TO SUNDAY SCHOOL SPECIAL SURPRISE CREATED WARM MEMORIES, COLUMNIST MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK wick2@sympatico.ca As well as starting a whole new year back to the Northcote public school, September was a big month at the Lutheran Church too. There would have been no Sunday school over the summer months. Every parent of every child who was a member of the church was expected to give regular in-
structions in the holy word instead. Mother did the best she could with our nightly prayers, but with the summer months the busiest on the farm in the entire year, there was little time to give us lessons from the Bible. That isn't to say we weren't constantly reminded of the Ten Commandments and all they meant. Often, during the summer, the congregation was more sparse than usual, but once we had turned the corner from August to September, the pews were full, and the few people who made up the choir were back in their places on straight-backed chairs at the front of the church. We were all back to
Sunday school in the little room at the back, shut off from the congregation by a thin door which did little to shut out the booming voice of the minister. Of course, that meant too, whoever was teaching Sunday school had to keep her or his voice low so as not to interfere with what was going on out front. I loved Sunday school almost as much as I loved going to the Northcote school during the week. Especially if the teacher that Sunday (we often had a different teacher every week or so) would read us a story from a book and not ask many questions! She would read from a little paper booklet of just a couple of pages, and there was always a coloured picture on the front referring to the story inside. We were allowed, afterwards, to take the paper home, which
delighted me beyond words! Once my brothers were over the junior grades at the Northcote Side School, they were excused from Sunday school, and had to sit through the service with the congregation. Of course, this didn't please my brothers one bit. Emerson said it was all he could do to keep his eyes open and stop his head from falling down on his chest when the minister gave his sermon, which could go on for an hour or more, depending on how heated up he was on the evils of the day. Emerson said he would much rather be in the back of the church in the Sunday school. But of course, his almost six-foot frame was beyond sitting in the little chairs we used, and so with Audrey, Everett and Earl, he had to sit with Mother and Father.
That first day back at Sunday school, we children were in for a wonderful surprise. The teacher had to time her lesson perfectly, so that as soon as the last hymn was sung, she had to wind up in a hurry. That first day, as soon as the organist thundered out the first chord, our teacher reached behind her and took hold of a brown paper bag which looked like it had come from Briscoe's General Store, and she took out the tiniest little red Bibles I had ever seen. In a low whisper, so as not to be overheard over the final hymn, she said each of our names and she handed out to us our very own little Bible. In ink, inside, she had carefully printed our name, and we were told that she expected us to read from it every night before we went to bed.
I still hadn't learned to read well, and so that chore fell to my sister, Audrey. Every night, Audrey who was high on religion at that time in her life, dutifully read a couple pages from my little red Bible. And then I would tuck it under my pillow, confident it would see me through until morning. My brother Emerson, when he saw what I had been given and who loved a free handout, told Mother he wouldn't mind going to Sunday school the next week, and he was prepared to either stand through the whole service, or sit on the floor. Mother said he could forget it. Mary is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. 'Mary Cook's Memories' appears as a regular column.

October 1, 1944 - August 26, 2018 Surrounded by the love of friends and family, Geoffrey Meredyth Cafley, passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Almonte General Hospital at the age of 74. He was the loving husband for 30 years of Susan Carol (Spinks). He will be greatly missed by his children, Matthew; Julie (Luc); Chad (Marisa) and Kirk (Robin). He was adored by his grandchildren Taylor, Lily, Zacharie, Théo, Joseph, Aubrey & Bodhi. Son of the late Margaret (Fargher) and Ronald Cafley, he is survived by his siblings, Judith (Gordon); Elizabeth (Sher); Mark (Nancy) and Rennie. He was a professor of accounting at Algonquin College and remembered as an entertaining teacher. He sold many cars at Arnprior Chrysler that had only been driven by elderly women. He was known for his dry sense of humour, that hid a deep sensitivity and love for others. He told us he loved us, by asking the timing of our most recent oil change. He was deeply generous and kind with friends, family and complete strangers. His favourite spot was smoking a cigar on his boat at the cottage. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Visitations were held Friday August 31, 2018 from 7-9pm and Saturday after 10am. A memorial service took place Saturday at 11am at the Boyce Chapel. A private burial will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Parkinson Canada in Geoff’s honour. horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
