ARH named newsmaker of the year
2017
Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Arnprior’s newsmaker of the year was an easy choice for the editorial staff: Arnprior Regional Health. From having the premier of Ontario visit to making a major funding announcement to receiving top grades from a national health care body, it is difficult to deny that 2017 was a great year for Arnprior Regional Health (ARH). And, by extension, the town as a whole. “The timing came together very, very well for us this year,” said Eric Hanna, president and CEO of ARH, adding that many people have worked in some cases multiple years to see projects brought to life last year. His personal favourite, one he has repeatedly called a highlight of his career, is the announcement of additional beds at the Grove Nursing Home. For years, Arnprior has been well behind the provincial average with just 60 long-term care beds. See PREMIER, page 2

A note and some mitts warmed not only hearts but hands in Arnprior last week during the cold snap. Skaters at the Caruso Street outdoor rink on Saturday, Jan. 6, were greeted with three pairs of warm woolen mitts that hung from the trees with a note that said “I am not lost, if you are stuck out in the cold and you need me then please take me to keep warm.” Stephane Desrosiers was pleasantly surprised to see the mitts hanging as he enjoyed a skate on the rink, saying: “Hockey is for life no matter how cold it is.”

“Bringing together the community and patients and staff — I’m seeing results,” Hanna said. “I really think that’s what makes the for innovation and success. Because everyone is buying in.” On smaller example of the community taking more interest in the hospital and nursing home is the annual Doctor Dining Duel. While not directly tied to ARH, the fundraiser supports the area’s physician recruitment committee. This year’s event doubled in size. And, coincidentally, three new family doctors are setting up shop in Arnprior. Another win for the hospital was the silver medal awarded from the Health Foods in Hospitals initiative. It is among the first hospitals in the region to reach that level. Thanks to ARH Foundation members raising money in the community, about $1 million worth of new equipment was purchased. The largest single purchase was for a new electromagnetic radiation machine and room renovation. The digital X-ray cost $400,000. Some smaller funding announcements last year totalled $2.33 million. Mayor David Reid was pleased to learn ARH was named Arnprior ChronicleGuide’s newsmaker of the year. “It’s well-deserved, for sure. Behind the scenes, especially on long-term care beds, Eric and his team have been at it for a long time, as long as I’ve been mayor, anyway. So to see them finally succeed, they need to be congratulated,” Reid said. “I fully agree with your choice.”

Arnprior, township plan for seniors’ drop-in centres Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Two drop-in centres with programming geared toward seniors are in the works for both Arnprior and McNab/ Braeside. A group representing seniors from the area presented their ideas to McNab/Braeside council at the Dec. 19 meeting. Like several communities in the Upper Ottawa Valley, they want to see a seniors’ drop-in centre at the current Grove Nursing Home when the future
one is built next door, and a second at the site of the future township office across the street from the current location at Calabogie Road and Russett Drive. “Renfrew has the Golden Age Centre,” said Katrin Spencer, project manager of The Grove’s redevelopment. “There’s nothing like it in Arnprior or McNab/Braeside.” The centres would provide low- to no-cost programs related to exercising and other activities. They would also encourage isolated seniors to socialize and improve their quality of life.
Darrel O’Shaugnessy of the Greater Arnprior Seniors Council pointed to adopting a creative-writing program done in Almonte. And to an intergenerational anti-aging media program that will see seniors share life stories with history students at Arnprior District High School. Stories will be recorded and preserved for future generations. Another program is called the Men’s Shed and sees retired males getting together for conversation and more. Also at the meeting were Glenn Ar-
thur of Arnprior’s recreation department and Eric Hanna, president and CEO of Arnprior Regional Health. Spencer said for these programs to be a success, partnerships with various stakeholders, including municipal governments, are crucial. Some programs are being held at Nick Smith Centre and the public library, but once the “seniors’ village” opens at The Grove, programming will ramp up. Costs include transportation and some wages. The province offers to pay 50 per cent, not as a one-time
grant, but as ongoing funding. Both local municipalities have committed $5,000 each in cash and in-kind services. It will start April 1. “I think it’s a fantastic idea,” Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden said. “It’s a much needed service for the community.” Mayor Tom Peckett said the number of seniors is on track to double over the next 25 years. They are living longer and expecting a decent quality of life. “I’m fully behind you in supporting this,” he said.
Growth, election among Arnprior mayor’s considerations for 2018 Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Will Arnprior retain its place as the second fastest growing community in Eastern Ontario? Mayor David Reid is fairly confident. “I don’t see our pace changing,” Reid said. “If anything, construction may be more. Unless there’s an overall slowdown in housing, but that’ll affect other communities too, so I doubt it will change.” The town is actually “struggling to keep ahead of the curve” as it relates to the rate of growth, he said. The comments were made during a discussion of what the future holds over
the next 12 months. He conceded that some plans are being put on hold to deal with higher demands in other areas. After two years of major investments in the downtown core, streets in various neighbourhoods are due for paving, he said. Folks along William Street can look forward to new water and sewage pipes (following multiple breaks in recent years) and more paving at the western end. On the other hand, the recent Waterfront Feasibility Issues and Options study is shelved at least for the short term. The $5- to $6-million project that could see lighted paths, an expanded beach, and new buildings occupied more than some staff and council time.
However, because the looming election could see turnover on council, the next council may have different ideas, Reid indicated. “I don’t think you’ll see a lot in 2018, but maybe a refocus with a new term of council. Elections are the perfect opportunity to listen to residents and what they want,” he said. “For me, it’s still a priority. But as a group we decided to get at water and roads infrastructure.” On the topic of June’s election, Reid wasn’t ready to say if he would run for a third term. He’ll decide in mid-January after personal consideration and consulting his family. “It’s a decision I take seriously. If I’m not all in, then it’s time for someone new to come in,”
he said. “That said, I do like what I’m doing. It’s not the job.” Candidates can make their intentions known on May 1. An expected decision this year — one that has generated much interest among residents — is the location of the Sens outdoor rink. Reid still prefers the downtown location (near the OPP and fire station). He said it is clearly the public’s preferred choice, and that while the spot near Nick Smith Centre would offer some savings, the project is larger in that it will unite the community better in a central location. Discussions over new parking lots in the downtown core, specifically who will pay for them, were big in 2017. One was purchased and built at the corner of John and McGonigal streets. Area merchants will be billed for it. There’s been talk of buying another piece of land and readying it for a parking lot, but Reid doubts that will happen in 2018. With changes to the minimum wage in effect, from about $11 per hour to $14 now and $15 in 2019, the municipal government is staring at a hit to its books. “It’s a fairly significant impact on the town,” he said. “Although the (provincial) government has dealt with the firefighters, it still has an impact.” It is costing the town about $100,000 this year, and more as the in-

Many volunteers and elderly visitors can’t climb the stairs to upper levels. But Reid and others on council had concerns that an elevator outside the building would be an eyesore. Reid said staff is looking into placing it at the back or interior. The new French school that was to open is now delayed for 12 months. It came in well over budget. Will the board abandon the idea entirely? “There’s always a risk,” he said. Periodically, municipal staff comes up with suggestions for encouraging commercial and institutional facilities to recycle. They do very little compared to residences. That places a burden on the lifespan of landfills, costing taxpayers in the end. Reid has some hope movement will take place. “It will be coming up again,” he said. “There should be higher diversion rates, for sure.”

Arnprior mayor reflects on 2017’s ups and downs Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
It was another year of dust and disruption in Arnprior, but already signs of it paying off are manifesting. Mayor David Reid reflected on 2017 in a wide-ranging interview that touched on everything from construction and road work and investments, to staff changes, child poverty, Sunday markets and a tragic incident that gripped the town. The second of a two-year, $10-million project to replace aging sewer pipes and much more in the core of Arnprior wrapped up before winter. Downtown revitalization set out an “ambitious” timeline, Reid said, and there is no denying that business suffered for merchants along John, Elgin and other streets. But they should start seeing better days ahead. “It is a big part of what we’ve been doing for the last two years. This was more than streetscaping. It was a full infrastructure replacement; gas mains, utility plants. It was all encompassing,” he said. “And some of it you won’t see right away; the trees will take five or 10 years before they can be appreciated.” He said merchants are “equally happy” with it being done, and that more investments are already being seen. Some waited until the dust settled before investing in their own storefronts (with municipal grants). Others, such as Studio Leslie Anne, have opened their doors for the first time. “People have seen the town invest in the downtown,” he said, adding that the inaugural farmers’ market season was a success and learning curve. “So I think you’ll see a lot of development in the years ahead.” Bell Canada recently announced a $10-million investment in Arnprior. Businesses and residents will see faster Internet service. Even Reid will benefit personally: his 10 megabytes will jump to one gigabyte. “That’s crazy good,” he said. “I think it is a very big deal. It’s just an-
other thing that puts Arnprior ahead of others.” Another major project saw upgrades to a water pipe along Daniel Street. It was needed to keep up with residential growth along the NorthWest parts of town. The water tower needed wider pipes to service the dozens of homes being built. That meant a resurfacing for one of the town’s main arteries. However, with Daniel and the downtown streets enjoying newly paved surfaces — others have been neglected. Council is aware and has told staff during at least one meeting that roads will be a priority in 2018. A good sized portion of the municipal government’s brain trust was effectively lost in 2017 with the retirement of longtime recreation director Glenn Arthur. His experience and knowledge will be difficult to replace, but Reid is pleased to have him stay on in a part-time capacity for at least the short-term future. The interview process will begin for a new recreation director, but the role will be reduced somewhat. Currently, cleanup crews report to the recreation director when it comes to parks and recreation facilities, and report to operations manager John Steckly for everything else.
In future they will report solely to Steckly. A small cost savings could be attained. When a report emerged that Renfrew County’s highest rate of child poverty was in the relatively affluent Arnprior, Reid wasn’t that surprised. It is bound to be in the handful of urban areas; people in poverty often face transportation challenges, so if they can walk to grocery stores and the like they are more apt to live in towns and cities. Renfrew County Housing is also located in Arnprior. That said, local stakeholders are meeting this winter to see what can be done by lower-tier governments and to help or advocate on behalf of struggling families. “We will be forming an ad hoc committee,” Reid said. “It’s something we as a municipality and society want to look at more closely and do what we can to make it better.” He anticipates one area can use improvements (with little financial costs); communication. “We have lots of services, but there is a disconnect. So this committee might be able to consolidate that, and become a point of contact,” he said. “There are lots of agencies but they are all in their own little worlds. You don’t know who to contact or where
to go.” One of the most impactful events of the year was the tragic collision on Daniel Street last summer. A woman en route to her grandchildren’s school was killed by a car that led police on a chase from Eganville. At the time, Reid was deeply moved by the news — as were those who knew
the woman and many who didn’t. “It was tragic. When you have such a sudden loss of a loved one …” He wouldn’t comment on whether police handled the situation properly, only to say there is an investigation that should get to the bottom of it. “It was an accident that probably could have been avoided,” Reid said.
Tree time
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland
It was a blistering cold Saturday, Jan. 6 as volunteers from the Optimist Club of Arnprior were up at 9:30 a.m. with five trailers to collect the numerous Christmas trees around town. Jim Mulvihill, John Rajsic and Chris Toner are just some of the dozen volunteers who were collecting the trees. The collection raised approximately $800 and all money raised will go back to youth in the community.

Stay safe on the trails It’s winter and a snowmobiler’s paradise out there, but it’s important to be aware that many of the same rules of the road also apply to snowmobile operators. If snowmobile operators are going to be enjoying time on their sleds this winter season, it’s important to be fully educated on the rules of the trails. According to the Ontario Provincial Police, charges such as speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving with blood/alcohol levels surpassing the legal limit carry a variety of penalties, which could include several fines, loss of driver’s licences, criminal charges and even imprisonment. If operating any type of vehicle, whether a car, snowmobile or ATV, alcohol or drugs don’t mix. Riders with a blood/alcohol limit between the warn range of 0.05 and 0.08 could face a three-day warning suspending a driver’s licence on the road. And the repercussions get stricter with each repeat occurrence. The OPP will be out monitoring area trails, waterways and roadways to ensure
proper protocols are followed. Over the 2016-2017 season, police investigated 27 snowmobiling deaths across the province with several involving speed or alcohol. Riders can ensure they get the most out of this snowmobile season by being prepared and following a simple checklist before heading out on the trails. A valid driver’s licence is required (if under 16, obtain a snow vehicle operator’s licence); provide proof of snowmobile ownership and sled registration with validation sticker; always travel with proof of sled insurance (pink slip); and make sure all riders wear an approved snowmobile helmet; a valid snowmobile trail permit, to be displayed prominently with a permit receipt, is also necessary. Always be sure to carry an emergency kit with an ice pick, extra food and charged cell phone, and inspect your sled before embarking (check oil and gas levels, etc.) Keep in mind that the rules of the road also apply to the trails. Be prepared, stay sober and slow down.
It’s been a privilege to be a journalist Theresa Fritz
Back on sunny day in June 1989, I sat at my Carleton University convocation ceremony and could not believe my luck. Not only was I getting my journalism degree, I had my first real job as a reporter to go to the following week, I was sitting listening to then media-mogul Conrad Black speak. Black’s words about the industry at that time filled me with hope and excitement. I believed I had chosen a profession where I would make a difference and what I wrote would impact people’s lives. I also expected to retire from this profession. That was not to be. The details are simple enough. Myself, along with other talented Ottawa journalists, are now out of work due to a newspaper transaction between Metroland Media and Postmedia in November 2017. It’s business and it happens. But, for me, it’s personal. I started working for Thomson Newspapers as a reporter at The Trentonian. I learned a lot. From there, I moved to the Ottawa Valley

to become a reporter at The Almonte Gazette and The Carleton Place Canadian – both Runge newspapers. At those papers I moved up to assistant editor and then editor. From there, I became a reporter with the Performance Printing Group and the EMC papers and then editor of the Ottawa EMC papers which included the Arnprior, West Carleton, Kanata and Stittsville EMC newspapers. Those papers were acquired by Metroland in October 2011 and I became the editor of the West Carleton Review. I got to work with some former Runge colleagues and it felt like coming home. I was then promoted to managing editor of the Ottawa papers – Kanata Kourier-Standard, Stittsville News, West Carleton Review, Ottawa East News, Ottawa West News, NepeanBarrhaven News, Ottawa South News, Orleans News and Manotick News. The Manotick Newspaper was merged with Ottawa South more than a year ago. I was also the managing editor of both The Renfrew Mercury and the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide.
This job of mine has never been just a job. It wasn’t for the money. Had I wanted to monetize my education all those years ago, I would have continued on and pursued the law career I had planned. This career of mine was a calling based on a natural curiosity, a desire to get to the bottom of things and serve the public by providing them information. Awards were never the motivator. It was that call from someone who liked a story that meant more. It was the person who reached out in the grocery store who mattered. And it was the complaints too. Mistakes - those made you want to do better. You can’t hide when you are face to face with your community. That’s community journalism. Being let into someone’s home, their lives, or having them share their joy or heartbreak with you is quite something. It is a trust. Building trust takes years. This passion of mine has kept me going for 28 years. I can’t even begin to guess how many assignments I have covered, how many stories I have written or how many people – the famous and not so famous – I have interviewed. I have boxes in my basement filled with clippings, papers, photos and negatives. I just can’t seem

to part with them. More recent work fills several USB keys. Some stories I have written have touched me more than others. They are permanently etched on my soul. Some have made me laugh, others cry. I know journalists should remain objective but if you are not human, what’s the point? There are too many people to thank for their support but there are a few who are very special to me. I need not name them here. I believe they know who they are. I came across a copy of the final edition of The Toronto Telegram from 1971 while cleaning out my office. Reading the front-page story about the paper’s closing, a quote from one departing reporter struck me. “I want it remembered that I did not leave the news business,” he said. “It left me.” Newspapers matter. They reflect our communities, our neighbours, ourselves. A community newspaper is quite possibly a community’s best friend, a hand to hold in good times and bad. It is hard to say goodbye. Times have changed. My industry has changed. I, for one, will always be proud to say I was a journalist. And I want it known that I didn’t leave my profession, it left me.

Something special on the Algonquin Park Bird Count Sadly, the Christmas Bird Count season has come and gone. This year I took part in four counts, the most recent being the Algonquin Park count on Dec. 30. It was cold, -24 at 7 a.m. when Ann Mayall, my Algonquin Park CBC partner for the past 18 years, and I began “the walk.” Our wonderful route takes us from just west of Mew Lake to the old rail bed that forms part of the Track and Tower Trail. By the time we’ve reached the bed, a remnant of the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway, we’ve walked three kilometres, roughly a quarter of our route. We then head east to Mew Lake Campground where our car awaits us. The route takes us down through mature hardwoods to a long expanse of northern conifers including swathes of spindly black spruce. Fresh tracks of moose, eastern wolf, pine marten, fisher, and river otter abounded along the route. The otter tracks were especially common along a frozen creek, and were so fresh I was surprised we didn’t come across their makers. The spruces bore a large crop of cones but many of these had already released their seeds. While large numbers of seed-eating finches were not expected, to our delight we encountered hundreds of crossbills, finches owning oddly shaped bills for prying open cone scales. Red and white-winged crossbills were present, with several flocks containing both species. We also encountered several flocks of pine siskins and one of purple finch. The rail bed takes us past Head Creek Marsh where each year I hope to see something extraordinary, perhaps a great gray owl or golden eagle. Expectations are always high even though over the past 20 years the best birds I’ve seen are northern shrikes. But this year in the speckled alders

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way bordering the creek was a large flock of American goldfinches accompanied by two American tree sparrows. The latter I rarely see on the count so that sighting was exciting. During our seven-hour walk (without snowshoes, which was a mistake), Ann became chilled. After reaching the car I sent her off to warmth and carried on. I headed for the Madawaska River near Pog Lake where open water flowed below the small dam. It was past 4 o’clock when I arrived but of no surprise ducks were absent. I was about

I squeaked on my fingers and the little weasel began running over the ice toward the dam. When directly across from me, it jumped into the frigid water and swam in my direction. I always carry my camera but had difficulty focusing on the mink for the camera was half frozen and the viewfinder
iced over. When it reached my shore the mink disappeared, only to reappear seconds later, its head popping out of the snow mere metres away. For a couple of seconds it looked at me before vanishing for good. Fortunately my camera had come to life, leaving me with a permanent memory of a most remarkable encounter. The seventh-place Arnprior Packers host the fifthplace Perth Blue Wings at the Nick Smith Centre on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. And on Sunday the Packers welcome the Embrun Panthers to town at 7:30 p.m. The Packers are coming off a tough weekend, having dropped both of their games. On Jan. 6 they fell to the Whitewater Kings in Cobden 4-3: Ty Power had three points for the Packers, Hunter Halliday and Brayden Jorssen had the other two goals, Mitchell Rukavina made 34 saves. And on Sunday night it only took the Winchester Hawks one goal to seal the Packers’ fate 1-0.

Liam Hawel is not the first Arnprior hockey player drafted to the NHL. Incorrect information appeared in a photo caption in the Jan. 4 issue. Randy Pierce was drafted 47th overall in the 1977 draft by the Colorado Rockies. In 1987, Chris Clarke went 204th overall to the Washington Capitals. In 2003, William Colbert was drafted 228th overall by the Ottawa Senators; and again in 2005, he was taken 183rd by San Jose. Two have played in the NHL: Dan Fridgen played two seasons with the Hartford Whalers and Pierce play eight with Colorado Rockies, New Jersey Devils, and Hartford Whalers. The Arnprior Chronicle-Guide regrets the error and any confusion that may have followed.

Mary marvels at how problems were solved in Depression years Mary Cook Memories
“Yes siree, it’s here to stay,” Father said at breakfast, forking in his fried potatoes and salt pork. He had already completely banked the old log house with snow, and packed it with the shovel so that it would stay where he put it. With no foundation, we needed all the help we could get to keep the cold drafts of winter outside. The barns were snug, kept warm by the livestock and with boards on hinges over the windows, so they could be opened for milking and feeding the livestock, and otherwise kept closed. Logs were rolled against the big doors when they closed as well. Mother said the barns were warmer than the house, which Father said was pure nonsense. The big watering trough, which sat in the middle of the barnyard, but close to the pump had been drained of its water, and was now full of snow.
There would be no watering of the livestock from there until the winter was over. Being a Saturday, I was home from school, and Father knew how I loved to be with him when he was doing farm chores, and after breakfast, he told me to get my clothes on, and to dress warmly because we’d be outside for a spell. After I was dressed, Mother wrapped a scarf around my face, and I was covered from head to toe, with only a slit left open for my eyes. Father went to the drive shed and got an axe, picking one carefully from the several leaning against the wall. He nodded in the general direction of the west hill, and leading the way, he broke track down into the gully, and I carefully put one foot after another where he had first stepped. It was hard plodding ... the snow up to Father’s knees, and I silently wondered why we hadn’t taken the toboggan and simply got on and slid down to the creek. This is where I knew Father was
heading. We got to the creek, which cut through one of our lower fields. In the summer, in most places, it was just a trickle and easy to get across to reach the back of our farm. But in the winter the creek served as a watering hole for our livestock, and that was the reason Father and I were at its edge. Father scraped the snow off a spot touching the shoreline, and wielding the axe, he soon had a hole deep in the ice. I could see the water, barely moving, and the hole big enough that at least two cows could drink from it at the same time. I knew too the horses would take turns, one at a time when they went to the hole to drink, having seen them the winter before. The hole in the creek, made to Father’s satisfaction, would replace the watering tank in the yard until it once again could be filled by the pump and not freeze up into a solid mass, no
good for anything. At first, every day, the livestock was taken down the hill at the back of the barns to the hole in the creek for their daily watering. Soon they needed no direction, knowing exactly what to do when let out. They knew what their mission was, and I would marvel how quickly they learned to go on their own, drink from the creek, and head back up to the barnyard. My brothers said the cows were the dumbest animals on the farm, but I thought they were pretty clever to learn so quickly where they could go on their own for water. And again I would marvel at how problems were solved in those Depression years. Imagine — a watering hole replacing the water tank! And the stone boat put to use when it was impossible to use the wagon or the sleigh because of thick bush or deep snow. An ice house to keep our food from spoiling when there was no electricity; stores willing to trade chickens
and eggs for needed supplies; clothes handed down from one sibling to another and Father putting the same patches on galoshes that were used on the inner tubes of the old Model T Ford to get another year out of our footwear. When I thought about it all, I worried less about the lean times called the Depression. I knew there would always be a way for us to survive, one day to the next. There might be no money for anything but the bare essentials, but we would live out those years through hard work, and putting to good use what we already had on the farm. CARD OF THANKS
WITH HEARTFELT THANKS We would like to thank Andy for calling the ambulance, Dr. Strader and nurses at the Renfrew Victoria Emergency department for your quick thinking and great care you gave Keith, Dr. Pinard and the nurse who went by ambulance with Keith to the Heart Institute, all doctors and nurses there who looked after Keith in any way. You are all such wonderful, compassionate, and caring people, which I saw everyday I was there. Thank you to my family and friends for all your support through this difficult journey. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Patsy, Layton, Bobbie-Jo, Kyle and Grandkids My First Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy the voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my Heavenly home above, I send you each a memory of my undying love. After all “LOVE” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always most important in the story Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to you, For I can’t count the blessings of love he has for you, So, have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Keep your pet safe from frostbite Ian Stupp Pet Talk
It is a misconception to believe that cats and dogs can withstand cold temperatures because they have fur. Some large dog breeds are well equipped for the winter months and love to be outdoors while others like small breed dogs are more sensitive and have no tolerance for the colder temperature. Even a quick moment outside to do its business is all it takes for a little Dachshund’s paws to freeze up and have him shivering. Cats usually don’t stay outdoors for long when it’s very cold. They might make a quick pounce and come right back into the house. Always make a note of the upcoming forecast before letting your cat out. It might be colder the next day and if kitty hasn’t come home he or she will be more at risk to developing frostbite and hypothermia especially if no one is around to let them back in the next morning. What is frostbite? Animals have ways of dealing with cold temperatures but when exposed to extreme freezing temperatures for an extended period of time, these same mechanisms that work to keep them warm and alive can actually cause damage and death to the tissues of their extremities such as the tips of ears, tail, and foot pads. Signs of frostbite — Symptoms to look for if your pet has been outdoors and you suspect it may be suffering from frostbite: • Shivering
• Ice on body and limbs • Tissues are bright red followed by pale colour (vasoconstriction) to black colour (death of tissue) First aid: • Do not apply snow or ice • Do not rub or massage the frozen tissue • Dry gently after you have the warmed the area • If it is a limb or paw that is frozen, soak it only in a bath or bowl of warm water • Warm the affected area rapidly with warm water using towels or warmed ice packs • Do not immerse your pet completely in a bath this will cause the body temperature to decrease and cause hypothermia Prevent self-trauma — When the tissues are warmed it may cause some discomfort to your pet. The same also occurs when tissues are dead. • Seek veterinary care immediately since secondary infections can sometimes result from gangrene tissues • Wrap your pet in a blanket to prevent selftrauma such as chewing or gnawing at the affected limb and to help keep him or her warm and calm Use common sense, if it’s too cold for you to be outside than it is probably too cold for your pet!
