Zoning problem puts business on brink of closure DEREK DUNN

An Arnprior couple is taking desperate measures to save their livelihoods and business from almost certain closure by the municipal government. Mike and Judy Wilson own and work full-time at Antiques Treasures and Treats at 260 Elgin St. West, less than half a kilometre from town hall. The store that refurbishes worn furniture, and offers some food products as well as pre-owned household items, has been a fixture in town for 11 years. It has grown steadily over that time, to the point that it appears less like a home-based business — which it is zoned for — and more like a business that includes a living area upstairs and behind the storefront. And it is that apparent ambiguity that brought on a complaint from the public. However, the main building follows the bylaw; the garage-like building on site does not. “If our neighbours didn’t care, we didn’t think anyone else would.” Judy Wilson The town’s contracted bylaw enforcement officer investigated. With a large building full of products, plus a main home with a cash register in the storefront (former living room), more products, and signs in the driveway

“It didn’t cross our minds. If our neighbours didn’t care, we didn’t think anyone else would. The town allowed us to do what we’ve been doing because we offer two services - gift baskets and refinishing.” She said the business has paid commercial taxes on the building in the back for five years now. No one at town hall was made available to comment. Mayor David Reid replied back to an email asking for an interview by saying he has talked to the Wilsons and given them some options, but that the matter will be dealt with in front of council. “It is important that this matter be dealt with in an open, transparent way, following the appropriate public access,” Reid wrote. “At that time all the relevant stakeholders will have an opportunity to speak to this matter, following which council can make a decision on how to move forward.” PETITION
In a bid to persuade council that the business offers important services, not just tax revenue, the Wilsons started a petition last month. However, it was suspended until after the holiday season. Judy said it is a stressful enough time for retailers without explaining the situation to customers. “We would get upset, then they would get upset,” she said. “We were ruining people’s Christmas, so we put it away until now.” The petition had about 200 names on it by Jan. 3. It isn’t available online, just in store, the presumption being that it will hold more weight if folks are willing to brave the elements to sign it. The couple say they are more than willing to pay their fair share in taxes. (It is unknown if they would have to pay back taxes.) They fear that if their retail space were to shrink to the point that they only sold what they produced, so would store hours. The couple would be forced to take on entry-level jobs at other retailers. “It’s very serious,” Judy said. “We want to do whatever we have to do.” She indicated her gratitude to the “tremendous support” they have received. She is also pleased with the signals they are getting from town hall. “Council is reviewing the situation. We have reason to be somewhat optimistic, but that’s just it — some reason.” The matter will be discussed at an upcoming council meeting.
Town council considers 1.75% tax hike the hike equates to $1.24 per month increase for the average home with an assessed value of $220,250. It does not include the county and education portions of the tax bill, which will be determined by May. Council is expected to vote in the budget at the Feb. 21 or Feb. 22 meetings. Little was said following Wild-
man’s presentation, which presented numbers similar to previous years. “It certainly is encouraging that Staff has suggested Arnprior counwe are seeing to most of our goals cil adopt a 1.75 per cent municipal tax and not have a significant impact on rate increase. the tax rate,” Mayor David Reid said Chief administrative officer Miof the proposed almost $200,000 inchael Wildman presented the budget crease to revenue. at the Jan. 9 regular meeting, saying The percentage falls below the rate of inflation. The additional tax revenue will help offset decreased funding from other levels of government, and bolster recovery of reserve fund balances related to the downtown revitalization project. It will also assist in bringing depleted reserves — such as winter maintenance — back to minimum balances. And, it will help deal with an increasing gap between predicted infrastructure work in future and funding. In short, it will help avoid the need for future tax spikes. One area that did raise eyebrows among at least two on council is the need Courtesy Town of Arnprior for a new snow disposal Among the slides at staff’s draft budget presentation is one detailing expendi- facility. for a number of years, but the cost is pegged at $1 million. Reeve Walter Stack asked why one was needed. Wildman said the current site — on private land — is not compliant with provincial rules. Coun. Dan Lynch said there is plenty of room at the airport. When Wildman began his presentation, thanking all the work done by every department, he told council that the process for determining and presenting the budget is now smoothed out. “It’s taken a few years, but I think we’ll stick with this,” he said. After all the 2016 bills come in, he doubts much of a surplus on the about $17 million budget moving forward. Snowstorms last winter and an early start to this winter have exhausted the winter control budget. The museum flooding and water advisory are two other unexpected events that redirected tax dollars. Fortunately, on the museum repairs side, the federal government agreed to pay for half the cost of repairs, some $267,000. “(Curator) Janet (Carlile) has managed to do it again,” Wildman said. There is a bump in funding from the Ontario Municipal Partnership from about $971,000 to more than $1.1 million. But costs related to employee benefits, utilities such as hydro, and insurance are all going up. Policing remains a huge cost. The

per unit cost for policing has increased from about $396 last year to almost $399 this year. With the increased number of houses in Arnprior, the OPP budget has gone up by $44,000. Council is asked to grow staff by a .5 full-time employee in public works, and an additional summer student to keep the downtown clean. Downtown should be busier, the reasoning goes, with much of the revitalization work done, plus additional weekend hours at the museum, and a pilot project for a “seasonal market.” The draft budget includes a garbage rate increase to $155. It was $130 in 2014. “The increase will be required to break even and maintain pace with growth in future years,” reads Wildman’s presentation. Staff also recommends buying a new vehicle for the inspection officer. The amount spent reimbursing the owner is similar to what it would cost for the town to purchase one. A similar request was turned down last year. The draft budget includes over $4 million in contributions to reserves, up almost $208,000 over last year. Capital expenditures total just over $7 million this year. Wildman also explained that staff are moving from developing a 10year long range capital forecast to a 20-year one, making the municipality unique among comparable municipalities.

Car driver freed from County Road 29 rollover DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
According to Ottawa firefighters, a car was flipped on its roof near Arnprior on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Firefighters were called a little after 5 p.m. to a single-car accident on County Road 29 near Highway 417.
“The car involved was reported on its roof and one occupant was trapped inside,” reads a notice from Ottawa Fire Services. “On arrival, firefighters confirmed that there was one person in the vehicle and extrication was performed by firefighters on scene.” Once freed, patient care was turned over to paramedics.
Be wary of ice conditions: OPP The OPP are urging people to evaluate the ice quality and use extreme caution prior to venturing out onto lakes and waterways. One ice shack went through the ice on the Ottawa River in McNab/Braeside Township and was reported to the OPP. The mishap occurred on Sunday, Jan. 8 and no injuries were reported. This incident is a reminder that there is
always some risk to travel or use of waterways during the winter. People should avoid slushy ice, ice on or near moving water, ice that has thawed and refrozen or layered ice caused by sudden temperature changes. A minimum of four inches of new clear hard ice is recommended for ice fishing or walking. More ice is needed for snowmobiling or driving motor vehicles.

McNab/Braeside Fire Association Fire Ball partners with local bridal shop TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It's the formal event of the year. The annual McNab/Braeside Fire Association is presenting the Winter Fire Ball Fundraising Gala on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Sand Point Golf Club at 38 Golf Course Rd. in Braeside, with entertainment provided by Rainwater Whiskey. Tickets cost $50 with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner prepared by Chef Cari Reid at 7:30 p.m. "It's a nice sit down dinner at the golf course," said Kelly O'Rourke, one of the event organizers. "This is the first time we are able to have it in the township." This is the fourth year for the ball and the organizing team promises it will be bigger and better than ever. Karen Barsoski is organizing the event with O'Rourke and they say they started it because there were no events to take their spouses to and they are part of the firefighter family as well. The ball is not just for firefighters, the general public is welcome to attend. The money raised goes right back into the association for their work in the community at numerous local events and helps them purchase much needed equipment. Partnering with the McNab/Braeside Firefighters Association for its Fire Ball is Simply Beautiful Bridal Boutique in Arnprior. Chantal Beaulieu has owned the shop for 10 years and on Jan. 1 she welcomed Christen Taillefer as her new partner. OPINION
Connected to your community
The good ol’ ODR They’re a Canadian institution. When the dark, dreary, cold winter weather descends there are some who flee to warmer climates to soak up the sun and frolic in the sand. There are others, however, who embrace winter and all the wonders it has to offer, including the treasured outdoor rink (ODR). Whether it’s for a moonlit skate or a lively game of shinny, outdoor rinks draw reams of visitors during the winter months, providing a healthy alternative to more sedate indoor activities for young and old alike. Many of us first learned to skate there and hold close to our hearts memories of time spent on our local ODR. More often than not, behind these fun and frosty community hubs, there are dedicated volunteers ensuring the facility is ready for all to enjoy. A recent rash of vandalism at one of the Valley’s rinks, in Admaston, is concerning. Volunteers there were frustrated, and rightly so, to discover more than $500 in damage caused by unknown suspects. Sad to think that a few wayward vandals are jeopardizing the enjoyment so many get from the facility. Here’s hoping the individuals are caught and the community continues to reap the rewards of the volunteers’ extensive efforts. Already, several individuals have come forward to repair the damage a prevent future incidents. Next month, communities in the Ottawa Valley and the Pontiac will have the opportunity to celebrate outdoor rinks and all they offer during The Festival of Outdoor Rinks, a celebration of this unique part of our culture and tradition. “With 25 rinks participating, it’s a weekend to travel with skates or without, and take part in a free weekend worth of fun and activity to beat the winter blues,” says the event website. Among the local rinks participating in the festival, which runs Feb. 10-12, are Admaston, Braeside, Foresters Falls, Horton and Ma-TeWay. More information and a full listing of events can be found at www. festivalofoutdoorrinks.com . See you out there on the ice.

Thanks for generous response Calling all aspiring short story writers
To the editor:
The Century 21 Explorer agents, and staff are very pleased with this year’s response to the request for donations of winter outerwear on behalf of the Arnprior and District Food Bank. While the previous years have been very successful, this year the response was outstanding! Many good-quality used and new items were donated from infant sizes to adults, including boots and handknit mittens and hats - thanks knitters! Once again, the kindness of our residents has been amply demonstrated, and Century 21 Explorer would
like to extend their gratitude, and say congratulations to this generous, caring community for another successful snowsuit drive. However, winter is just beginning so if you still have donations you want to make, Century 21 will be happy to receive them on behalf of the Food Bank - their office will still be open six days a week. Hope everyone enjoyed health and happiness this holiday season, and Century 21 wishes the community a very Happy New Year! Nancy Young Century 21 Explorer Realty Inc.

The balance of nature never was When I was young I was taught nature exists in a state of equilibrium — that predators keep prey in check, and that plants and animals live in balance. As time passed I came to learn that nothing could be farther from the truth. This winter is providing great examples of just how imbalanced nature really is. Over the past three weeks, the Christmas Bird Counts in which I participated took me from Kingston to Arnprior, Algonquin Park and, finally, Dunrobin. On these events I got a first-hand picture of the distribution of birds and other animals in eastern Ontario. Two themes became clear: red squirrels and finches (with one exception) were scarce while American robins and other fruit-eating birds were present in surprising numbers. In some winters, finches such as white-winged crossbills are so abundant that it‘s hard to hear other birds after the sun rises. This winter, apart from the occasional twitter of American goldfinches, dawn arrives in virtually silence. In some years the chatterMichael Runtz ing of red squirrels greets you in every Although Northern Cardinals visit birdfeeders for sunflower seeds, coniferous woods; this year even their they, like this female eating Staghorn Sumach drupes, are also benefit- tracks in snow are near absent. ing from this year’s massive fruit crop. The reason for this is clear — co-
niferous trees have virtually no cones. Conifer seeds are the main food not only of crossbills and red-breasted nuthatches (also scarce this winter) but also of red squirrels. Last Michael Runtz fall I watched a red squirNature’s Way rel harvesting jack pine cones, which are so hard they require the heat of fire to release their seeds. By now that squirrel has likely lost a lot of weight or needs dental work; that is, of course, if it is still alive. On the other end of the scale, apple and other fruit-bearing trees and vines such as wild grape are laden with fruit. This bounty was behind a record number of American robins tallied on the Ottawa and Pakenham-Arnprior counts. The crop was also likely responsible for Eastern bluebirds lingering; the one near Pakenham was the first recorded on that area’s count while the two observed near Dunrobin constituted that count’s second record. The abundance of fruit was
undoubtedly why a hermit thrush was encountered in Galetta, and Northern flickers were seen on several counts. Unfortunately, the one in Pakenham, which would have been a new species for the Pakenham-Arnprior Count, failed to show on Boxing Day but was seen during “Count Week,” the three days on either side of the count. How does this relate to the balance of nature? Well, if fruit and cones were produced in the same volume every year, seed-eaters would be present in the same numbers every year, and they would destroy all of the seeds, leaving none for regeneration. But low production in successive years causes the populations of seed-eating animals like red squirrels and deer mice to crash. Then, when a massive crop is produced, the few animals present can’t possibly devour all of the seeds, ensuring regeneration. The low years not only affect seedeaters but also the animals that eat them. Thus, like fruit and cone numbers, animal populations go through roller-coaster rides, creating ebbs and tides that ripple all through the ecosystem. This imbalance in nature makes each year different. It also makes each Christmas bird count fresh and exciting! The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Valley Heritage Radio celebrates 10 years on the air When Valley Heritage Radio (VHR) crackled to life on the airwaves for the very first time on Jan. 15, 2007, even the most diehard supporters and organizers weren’t sure what the future would hold for the communityowned radio station. The behind-the-scenes work had been going on for years — from the monumental task of filing for a radio licence to countless hours of fundraising — but the journey was just beginning. A lot of hard work had been completed, and there was more to come. Much more. And for some of those who were there when the seed was planted to grow a new Valley radio station, hitting a 10-year milestone is a major accomplishment. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be going strong after 10 years,” said Lesley Galbraith, the current programming and production manager who was also the first person hired at the station. “We had no idea what the response from the community was going to be; but once we were on-air, the response was overwhelmingly positive and the growth has been mind boggling.” Galbraith said that even from the earliest days, the station’s philosophy has remained constant. “We are all about the communities we serve and our listeners. We’ve

We gear our programming to what the people want, and so far it has worked wonderfully,” she said. Sunday, Jan. 15 marks the 10th an-
niversary of Valley Heritage Radio going on the air, and to celebrate, the station is hosting a party at the Renfrew Armouries from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The afternoon will feature some of the Valley’s most popular country musicians for an afternoon geared to pay
tribute to everyone involved with the station from conception to what you hear on the air today. The day’s musical lineup includes performances by Neville Wells, the Rogers Family, the McMunns, Jennifer Johnston, Mike Cloutier, Howard Hayes, Al Cruise, and some of the regions’ top fiddlers will provide a tribute to Ottawa Valley fiddling. The Ottawa Valley Hall of Fame Band will be the house band, and that group includes Brian Hebert, Al Bragg, Rodger Coulombe, Dale Ducharme, Mike Hamelin and Mark Lemieux. As well, Roy Berger, one of VHR’s volunteer DJs, will be attempting a Guinness World Record for pushups. He currently holds three world records, and will be looking for a fourth in front of friendly crowd. A number of the station’s on-air personalities, along with staff, volunteers and Board members will be in attendance to show their gratitude to the listeners, advertisers and supporters from the past 10 years. “We wanted to celebrate in a way our listeners would appreciate. And that’s with great Valley music, a dance floor, a cold beverage and a snack,” said station manager Jason Marshall. “We invite listeners and friends of the station to come to the party so we can show them how important they are to us.
Without the support of the people of the Ottawa Valley and the Pontiac, we wouldn’t be on the air today.” Jim Long, the station’s events and volunteer co-ordinator, has been connected with VHR from the very earliest days, and he knew that good things could happen if the station could overcome all the hurdles needed to actually get on the airwaves. “Everyone involved saw the potential of the station, and we knew we just had to get on the air to appeal to a much larger group,” said Long. “And thanks to the people of the Valley loaning us their hard-earned money, and the commitment of our phenomenal volunteers, Valley Heritage Radio became a reality.” Long also invites people to come out Sunday to celebrate the station’s milestone. “We’d love to see some faces from the past, and anyone who has been part of this journey,” he said. “We all did it together. And we’d like to celebrate this special day together.” VHR’s 10th birthday is Sun, Jan. 15 at the Renfrew Armouries. The doors open at noon, and the fun begins at 1 p.m. Tickets are only $10 each and are available at outlets throughout the Valley, or by calling the station at 613432-9873 or 1-888-532-9870.

Jeff McMillan Chair 14 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, January 12, 2017
It's become known as a mainstay to help homeowners gear up for the spring, but due to declining attendance numbers and vendors, the Pakenham Home Show has been discontinued. Mississippi Mills council endorsed ending the home show effective this year, during discussion at the Nov. 15 committee of the whole meeting. Council formally approved the motion at the Dec. 6 council session. The municipality took over co-ordination of the show, which marked its 25th anniversary last year, following amalgamation in 1998. "The Pakenham Home Show enjoyed many successful years," noted community economic and cultural co-ordinator Tiffany MacLaren in her report to council. "It was at one time a bustling show that signified the beginning of spring and had a wait list of interested vendors. “In recent years it has become more difficult to fill the show with vendors and attendance numbers have declined each year." The home show was established in 1991 by local residents and business people as a way to promote local businesses and bring visitors to Pakenham. MacLaren provided figures on the attendance, noting that in 2014, the total number of people who passed through the Stewart Community Centre's doors for the show was 1,660. That dropped to 1,289 in 2015 and 1,119 in 2016. She said that $8,000 was spent annually on promotions. "Despite a creative continuous review of promotion and a deliberate effort to reach out to neighbouring communities, attendance numbers have declined consistently over the years from 2,500 people in 2006, 1,812 in 2012 and down to 1,119 in 2016," she stated. " The municipality also scrapped music in the upper hall in 2016 and introduced free workshops and offered crafters the opportunity to rent booths. "We used workshops in the promotion and hoped the crafters would attract additional show visitors...unfortunately we did not see the increased traffic we hoped for," MacLaren commented. She puts the dwindling interest in the Pakenham Home Show down to the changing environment, with technology allowing people to shop

for products and services online. Another factor is competing events on the same weekend, as well as the difficulty in booking vendors to fill the show and the increased cost of attendance and booth fees. However, MacLaren also stated that staff didn't "feel hosting and co-ordinating this show is fulfilling a municipality responsibility." The organization of the home show takes on average, 80 hours of staff time each year, which has steadily increased over the past two to three years due to the need for creative promotion in order to fill booths. An additional 80 hours is logged to attend and work at the event, and another 20 hours for staff to set up and take down after the show. "Home shows are not traditionally coordinated by municipalities. Carleton Place, Arnprior and Renfrew's home shows are each co-ordinated by their individual chambers of commerce," she said. "In recent years more than half of the exhibitors came from areas outside Mississippi Mills." The Carleton Place Spring Home and Fashion Show is actually organized by the town's recreation and culture department. The Pakenham Home Show realized $19,525.41 in revenue from booth and entrance fees in 2016 and according to MacLaren, a sum of $17,000 has been earmarked in the 2017 budget for the show, which hasn't been increased in several years. She said she'd like to see a portion of those funds go towards developing another project or event to benefit the Pakenham area. "Staff recommends that $1,500 of the $17,000 home show budget be retained in the 2017 recreation budget to be used to work with the Bridging Generations group to come up with an alternate project to support and encourage economic development in Pakenham," MacLaren said. Coun. Paul Watters moved staff's recommendations, which was seconded by Coun. Denzil Ferguson and passed by committee of the whole.

Emmanuel ACW boosts Seniors at Home Angel Tree
Betty Burton, treasurer and Lianne Ray, president of Emmanuel Anglican Church Women’s’ Group, present $500 to Dennis Harrington, executive director of Arnprior Braeside McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH) for the Angel Tree program. The ladies raised the money throughout the year with various church fundraising events and wish to donate for the benefit of seniors citizens who are unable to afford such services as foot care, transportation, etc., which is just what the Angel Tree Program is for. This brings the total for the Angel Tree to $2,806.
Arnprior Braeside McNab Seniors at Home is very thankful for the overwhelming support received from the communities this past holiday season. “Thank you to Island View Retirement Suites, all who purchased an angel from the ‘For the Love of a Senior Angel Tree’ and the angel who cashed in her Air Miles to be able to purchase hams and boxes of cookies,” say officials. “With all the donations we were able to surprise 50-plus seniors with gifts, including a gift basket from Island View, Christmas bags full of essentials, dessert and a ham for dinner. All gifts were delivered during the week of Dec. 19.” Delivering the baskets from Island View, are, left, Eden Boytel, life enrichment co-ordinator and Rob Powell, driver.

This beautiful girl is Katerina! Katerina is a wonderfully sweet and affectionate cat. She would love a quiet home where she would have a sunny window to gaze at the world during the day and a warm lap to curl up on in the evening. She is a senior lady at approx. 9 years old, and while she tolerates other cats, she would appreciate a home where she could be the only pet. Katerina is considered special needs as she does require twice daily medication for her thyroid, as well as regular blood testing to make sure she stays healthy. Please consider giving Katerina her forever home.

Seniors learn about life on the home front
Officials say it was a very fun and interesting Breakfast N’ Learn (BNL) for November when Carol Ann Flannery – One Woman Show – presented ‘On the Home Front.’ Flannery colours her legs with tea bags as the ladies did during World War II when there was a shortage of nylon stockings. The BNL as presented by Arnprior Braeside McNab Seniors at Home and sponsored by Tierney Stauffer LLP provides a variety of topics of interest to those age 55 and over. The next BNL takes place Wednesday, Jan. 25 when Jackie Laughlin, manager of RBC, Arnprior will be presenting on ‘How seniors can identify and protect themselves from fraud.’ To register, by phone, 613-623-7984 Seniors at Home. Alzheimer Awareness Month 2017 January is Alzheimer Awareness Month! Did you know that women are doubly affected by Alzheimer’s disease? They outnumber men living with the disease and more often than not shoulder the responsibility of caring for a family member with it. You know these women. They are the special women in your life – mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers, and friends. That’s why this January during Alzheimer Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society is joining our colleagues across the country to launch a nationwide campaign to get Canadians talking about Alzheimer’s disease. We want women to take action, be Alzheimer’s savvy, know the warning signs and take steps to reduce their risk – not only for themselves but for those they care about. Arnprior hockey day offers choice games, righteous ’80s concert DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Minor hockey day at the end of this month will feature fun and games for all ages, but it caps off with a righteous concert that 1980s kids will think is pretty choice, big time. Hair Force One, The Future of 80s Hair Metal, are pretty happenin', according to organizer Dustin Dorken. Everyone from headbangers to jocks will most definitely have a legit time. "They take you right back to high school," Dorken said. "They don't just cover heavy metal either. “There's Bon Jovi, everything. And they put some comedy in, too."
Cowabunga. Organizers with Arnprior Minor Hockey Day are adamant that the dance be for everyone in the community over the age of majority. It is a fundraiser for kids' hockey, but the Nick Smith Hall is for everyone, even space cadets. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and are available at Nick Smith, online at eventbrite.com or hairforce1rocks.com or by calling Chris Herrick at 613-880-7265. However, a big day is planned before that - beginning with almost all Arnprior teams playing, the majority against Renfrew teams. A pancake breakfast in the hall is
from 8 to 11 a.m. The official puck drop with representatives from both the Town of Arnprior and Township of McNab/ Braeside takes place at 11:30 a.m. Activities take place all day long, including games in a mini stick rink, digital target shooting and, new this year, a shot at thousands of dollars. It happens during the 7:30 p.m. Sens Alumni versus minor hockey coaches' game. "Tickets will be sold all day for the $10,000 shootout," Dorken said. "Presented by Stephen Dodd of Investors Group, one lucky fan will have their name drawn during the intermission of the game. They will shoot from centre ice for the chance to take home 10 grand.
"It would be outstanding if someone could pull that off!" Also outstanding, he added, would be if the coaches won this year. That would make up for last year's convincing loss to the former pro hockey stars. "Our plan is to redeem ourselves this year," said Dorken, almost convincingly. He blames last year's loss on the Sens' good goaltending. "And he wasn't even an NHL goaltender. I said, 'Next year bring us an NHL goalie.'" Mulvihill Insurance will again sponsor the game that was well attended last year. Justin Phillips, former linebacker with the CFL's Redblacks, will drop
Cobras win Cobden tournament
The Arnprior Atom Knights won the Cobden Cobras Atom Tournament in early December. They won again Barry’s Bay 4-3. They won the second game against Deep River in overtime, 4-3 and they won the third and final game in overtime against Renfrew, 2-1. Celebrating the big win in the back row, from left, are head coach: Brent McMullen, manager: Corry Saunders, assistant coach: Mark Teskey, Sean Connoughan, Adam Kealey, Drew Reid, Ethan McMullen, Daniel Pecaskie, Andrew Toner, Brody Taniwa, trainer: Jay Connoughan, assistant coach: Trevor Reid. the puck and be on hand to meet with fans. From Ottawa, Phillips won the Grey Cup with Calgary in 2014, and is currently a free agent. Although hockey day is easier to organize now that it is in year two, volunteers are more than welcome to help out in any way they see fit. Again, there is no prerequisite to having kids in minor hockey, Dorken said. It is about bringing hockey to the wider community. "We'll take just about any help we can get," he said. "It should be a lot of fun." Where's the beef ? Arnprior Minor Hockey Association has a website and can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Shingles vaccine is now free for Ontario seniors and helping them stay healthy. Seniors aged 65 to 70 can get the vaccine Ontario is reminding seniors who are turning 65 in 2017 from their doctor or nurse practitioner. The that, starting Jan. 1, they will be eligible to get the shingles vaccine greatly reduces the risk of developvaccine free of charge, saving them approximately $170 ing shingles. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, affects more than 42,000 people every year in Ontario. People with shingles often experience pain, tingling, or itching and then a painful rash. This rash can last for a month or more and is often severe enough to interfere with daily activities. For some, complications from the virus can lead to serious health problems ONTARIO MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND LONG-TERM CARE
such as loss of vision and prolonged nerve pain. Expanding Ontario’s publicly funded immunization program to help seniors stay healthy is part of the government’s plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which is providing patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to stay healthy and a health care system that’s sustainable for generations to come. Ontario is the only jurisdiction in Canada that provides the shingles vaccine free of
charge. Approximately 850,000 seniors between the ages of 65 and 70 are eligible to receive the publicly funded shingles vaccine. About 200,000 doses of the publicly funded shingles vaccine have been distributed throughout Ontario since the program launched in September. The shingles vaccine is also available in participating pharmacies. Patients who choose to receive the vaccine from a pharmacist will need a prescription from their primary care provider and will have to pay the pharmacy a fee for the vaccine.

Miss Crosby, as always, was at school by the time the first one of us arrived in the morning. My brother Emerson once suggested he wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she slept there all night. The Christmas holidays were over, and we were right back into the usual routine at the Northcote School. And every morning I looked for the special gift I had given Miss Crosby the night of our Christmas concert. And then, just after we had been back a few days, there it was. The white hanky I had given her, tucked into the cuff of her dress, with one corner sticking out just far enough that I could see the red rose that had been embroidered on it. Miss Crosby, ever cautious not to single one pupil out, gave no sign that she was wearing my gift. But I knew it was the one I had given her, and that was all that mattered. I had a hard time paying attention to my lessons that day, and wanted so badly to tell everyone that the hanky, which had cost 19 cents at

Of course, these hankies were never used for their original purpose ... no, that was when the square patch of white linen came into use. It was Aunt Lizzie from Regina whose hankies gave me the most interest. Of course, hers were of the finest linen, and not one was just a plain hankie. They were edged in lace, were bigger than the one’s Mother had, and were as white as the driven snow, and many had fine coloured embroidery on the corners. But it was what she did with them that interested me more. Aunt Lizzie was what Mother called “well endowed” which took me ages to figure out. She too kept her hankies well sprinkled with toilet water. Which meant you always knew where she was. Even if she walked by the back of your chair, you caught the scent of the toilet water. Lacking a place to put her hankie if she wasn’t going anywhere in particular, she would plunge it down the front of her dress into goodness knows where. And

when she needed it, she wasn’t the least bit embarrassed to reach in, grab it out, use it, and cram it back into the cavity from where it came. There was a lot to think about when it came to hankies. And so that day after Christmas, when Miss Crosby had my present tucked into the sleeve of her dress, I hoped that she would do something to show that she liked what I had given her at the Christmas concert. And then, just before school was let out at the end of the day, she pulled the hankie out of her sleeve, gently patted the end of her nose, looked down at the 18 of us waiting to be dismissed and her eyes rested on me and a faint smile came to her lips. And then she tucked the hankie back into her sleeve. That was all I needed. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Wishful thinking won’t get you ahead, Aries. But hard work will. Don’t shy away from an opportunity that comes your way, even if it seems less promising at first glance. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you find yourself in a leadership role this week and are asked to make a lot of decisions. Wield your power carefully as others are watching you intently. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a few variables are thrown into the mix once you think you have everything figured out. You will show your ability to problem-solve if you can handle the task. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, patience is required when a difficult situation presents itself. Resist the temptation to act before you get a full grasp of the situation and what you should do. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Someone close to you puts their faith in your ability to get a job done, Leo. Here’s How It Works: This week devote all of your effort to completing this work, and it will only enhance your résumé. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 row, column and box. THANK YOU I would like to express my thanks for the great retirement party! I was overwhelmed at the large turnout; actually I was lost for words if you can believe that! To my friends and co-workers for organizing this great get together. It was so nice to see my family, friends and their spouses, co-workers, past and present from every department I’ve worked with over the last 38 ½ years. Thanks also to my nurse manager Jessica Gilbert, Randy and Ellen, Julia and all the doctors that came to celebrate my years at R.V.H. The tremendous generosity of everyone for the monetary collection, flowers, gifts, certificates, ties, cards and well wishes thanks from everyone. To Tania and Lois for sharing a precious part of their lives with me to cherish forever. Thank you to Father Holly for his words of kindness towards me! To Debbie Patterson, Bonnie Nolan, Dr. Maxwell Buxton, thanks for the laughs and tears with your antics and memories we have shared over the years. Kudos to Bill and Bea Nesbitt whom hosted the after-hours party they weren’t aware it was happening (Blame Holly) Thank you! Last but not least to the Italian gentleman that gave me a tube of A535 for a gift, thanks I sure needed it as I was a bit stiff in the joints the morning after. Thanks for the memories, hope to see you all out and about. Sincerely, Marie Smith

PORTEOUS (PAYEA) SHERRY
May – 53 of Prescott, Ontario passed away on Monday December 19, 2016 at BGH Garden Street site Palliative Care due to a long battle with a rare hereditary progressive disease called Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum. Born on April 20, 1963 in Perth, Ontario to Willard Payea (deceased since early 1964) and Lillian (Terriah) Sicard (deceased since Sept. 2, 2006) Sherry was raised by her mother and a step-father, along with her five siblings. She attended Thousand Island Secondary School in Brockville, Ontario. She met Bill Porteous in January of 1993 and later married Bill, on October 27, 1995, however prior to this marriage Sherry had a daughter Tania Payea (Scott Hillocks) residing in Prescott, Ontario and a son John Cross (Amanda Rodwell) residing in Woodstock, Ontario – she was extremely happy and proud to see their progress and successes before she passed away. She also has six grandchildren she loved very much – Gabbrielle(13), Hope(12), Charisma(11), Denim(8), Tucker(7), and one in particular stole her heart having raised him from a baby, Jacobe Payea(15). Sherry’s life was in no way easy no matter how you looked at it, stemming from her childhood right up and including her health situation but she didn’t waist precious time feeling sorry for herself nor did she ask ‘why me?’ she simply took one day at a time and lived each day to the fullest – it might have merely been that she simply felt well enough to get out and go to the bingo today or to the casino or maybe it was strolling down Main Street in her wheelchair taking Jacobe to the beach. It might have been the passion she held for purses, clothing, shoes and jewelry – whatever it was she was surely a special sort of person. She repeatedly rejected being picked up by car to avoid the pouring rain on her way to meet her sister for coffee at Tim Hortons, preferring to experience the outdoors and choosing to wheelchair it just to be out there; out there with her big red umbrella held in one hand covering her wheelchair as she drove it up and over the large overpass irrespective of the rain. Sherry had been on and off life support four times in the last seven years and once she literally just came home and was wholeheartedly sitting on the beach enjoying the sun the next. She simply made a choice and refused to waste what she knew was limited precious time. Whatever it was that was her driving force it showcased a special sort of human being. As with all of us, Sherry was not a perfect person, yet definitely a product of her growing up environment, she however was one of the lucky ones, she understood the need to focus on her own behavior and not others. She learned to forgive freely the wrongs against her. Lucky enough to understand early that forgiveness didn’t condone what others did to her – it simply freed her from reliving the hurt over and over again. She was predeceased by her brother David Payea (on April 19 2010 at age 49) who had the same disease she was born with. She is survived by sisters, Marie Daubney (Dave) of Brockville, Norma Stephenson (Dale) of Mallorytown, Aline Keary (Paul) of Brockville and Kathie Serson of Brockville, along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and her friend Penny and special friend and sister-in-law Bev. At Sherry’s request there were no arranged services. We would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Beverage for his honesty and truly hearing Sherry’s wishes. As well a special thank you to both the BGH First Floor Nursing Staff for all they did for Sherry and our family and the BGH Palliative Care Garden Street site for their absolute professional and loving care with Sherry and our entire family during her last days. You all made a difficult time as easy as it could possibly be. Much appreciated, thank you!

Peacefully, on January 3, 2016, at the age of 93, our dear mother Bess McCarthy left us to join our father Mervyn and sisters Linda and Joan in heaven. Mom was a kind and loving person. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. And could that smile light up a room! We will miss her dearly. Mom was born on May 8, 1923 in Hastings Sussex England to Herbert and Florence (Wheeler) Freeman; a sister to big brother Ron. She met the love of her life, Mervyn McCarthy during WWII and they were united in marriage on December 12, 1942. Dad returned to Canada in early 1946 and Mom followed a year later with their 2 small children. She would leave England and big city life to settle in the small farming community of Chalk River, ON. Together they raised 5 children and enjoyed 67 wonderful years until Dad’s passing on May 6, 2011. Over the years, Mom and Dad would live in Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba, finally retiring in Renfrew, ON in 1994. In July of 2013, Bess made her final move to Fort Frances, ON to be close to her daughter Cindy. Bess is survived by her daughter Cindy (Ken) Noble, Sons, Basil ( Fran ) McCarthy and Mark (Terri) McCarthy, 19 Grandchildren, 27 Great Grandchildren, and 5 Great Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Mervyn, daughters Linda Letang and Joan Freeman, Grandson Sean McCarthy, Great granddaughter Madisyn McCarthy, parents Herbert and Florence Freeman and brother Ronald Freeman and his wife Edna. We want to thank Dr. Algie and the nurses for their compassionate care of mom over the years and everyone at Rainycrest who gave mom a smile, a hug or a kind word, it was much appreciated and it always made her day. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date in Renfrew, ON where she will be laid to rest next to Dad. If desired, donations may be made to the Rainycrest Activation Fund or to a charity of your choice c/o Northridge Funeral Home, PO Box 89, Emo, ON POW 1E0. Roy McCormick 1933 – 2008 As I sit in Heaven, And watch over you every day, I try to let you know with signs, I never went away. I hear you when you’re laughing, And watch you when you sleep. I even place my arms around you, To calm you as you weep. I see you wish the days away, Begging to have me home, So I try to send you signs, So you know you’re not alone. Don’t feel guilty that you have Life that was denied to me. Heaven is truly beautiful, Just you wait and see. So live your life, be free, And know with every breath you take, You’ll be taking one for me. Always loved, Rose, Nancy, Perry, Jeff and Penny
