A well-known Arnprior businessman was found guilty of starting a restaurant fire three years ago. Mustapha “Moe” Fakih was sentenced to 20 months in jail — beginning Jan. 12 — after a six-day trial in Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke. The judge, Justice Stephen March, found him guilty of arson while a property is occupied and arson that threatens the safety of others. The fire was at Moe’s Place on Madawaska Street, at Bell Street, on the evening of Jan. 19, 2014. Fakih maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and told Metroland Media in a Sept. 18 interview, “This is what I want people to know: I will have my day in court and prove my innocence.” March determined that Fakih, 54, intentionally spread gasoline on the basement floor that night, knowing that renters were in an upstairs apartment at the time. He stressed that Fakih didn’t intend to harm anyone. See CAUSE, page 3

Fire consumes home near Burnstown DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Fire consumed a house in McNab/Braeside earlier this month. Township fire Chief Dave Hartwick said the call came in on Jan. 4, just before 6:30 p.m., that a house along the Madawaska River near Burnstown was on fire. Twenty-two firefighters from the township and another six from Arnprior descended on the scene at 5 Peggs Lane. “There were no injuries. Everybody got out of the house,” Hartwick said. “I’d say the house is destroyed. It started in the roof and everything came down.” The older couple that lived in the home, which was insured, is staying with family in the area, he added. Hartwick and some volunteer crew members stayed all night long to keep an eye on possible flare-ups. He admits it was a cold night, but it is
something they do often. “We weren’t comfortable,” he said, chuckling. “I left the next day.” The second week of January was a busy one for the fire department. They responded to 18 calls, most having to do with downed trees and hydro-related incidents; but there was a mutual aid structure fire in Calabogie and a car accident in the township.
Fakih even alerted the renters that an explosion and fire had occurred. However, the court could not determine how the explosion happened following the evaporation of gas fumes, whether it was the furnace pilot light or a cigarette lighter or some other

HOLIDAY SEASON CALLS
He said the holiday season was no different than past years. They responded to a call on Christmas Day. Two chimney fires and a car fire outside Braeside kept them going. Arnprior’s holiday season was similar, according to fire Chief John Okum. “It was fairly normal in terms of calls,” Okum said. There were three calls. Icy conditions kept the town’s fire department hopping this month.

spark. Only that it was done to obtain insurance money. Fakih suffered second-and third-degree burns on his hands and face and was hospitalized for 10 days. A longtime Arnprior resident, he once owned a Pizza Pizza restaurant in town. The establishment was sold and recently reopened as a Vietnamese restaurant.

Calabogie family fearing homelessness in winter finds reprieve DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland
A young family caught in a battle between their landlords and a large corporation face eviction with nowhere to go during a Canadian winter. However, thanks in part to a Metroland Media investigation, reprieve may be in sight. Apryl Warren, John Soules, their two toddlers and three cats are living in a cabin just outside Calabogie. They moved there last year after their Arnprior business, The Shawarma Shoppe, went out of business - taking their savings with it. “We nearly lost everything,” Warren said. “We were in serious trouble struggling to keep bills paid.” Both adults are debilitated by health problems and survive off her Canadian Pension Plan benefits, which don’t cover the costs of her medication. Her son, too, is intellectually delayed, adding more stress to the situation. Then, as they were settling in for winter having bought $600 worth of wood for the stove, a landlord knocked on the door. A few days before Christmas they learned that the cabin would be sold and locked on Jan. 24. They would be escorted from the premises, even though they abided by the landlord and tenant act and always paid rent on time. “We will be homeless. Thirty days

We have no time to try to save money for first and last month’s rent plus moving expenses.” The family had no idea sisters Annie Munford and Joanne Leclaire, their landlords, had been locked in a legal dispute with W.O. Stinson & Son going back to at least 2014. The sis-
ters owned Munford’s Restaurant & Gas Bar, a well-known establishment in Calabogie. It had fallen behind on fuel payments to the petroleum products company. The cabin was used to help keep the restaurant afloat, but debts continued to mount. Leclaire said she assumed Stinson would have been paid when the restaurant was sold. But it wasn’t. She is attempting to get another mortgage before the cabin is auc-
tioned off. “I’m hoping I can work something out with Stinson. And they can stay in the house if I get a mortgage,” Leclaire said. “I never dreamt it could go that way. ARH funding welcome news to seniors NOTICE TO RESIDENTS Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) started 2017 off with some good news, with a recent announcement of an additional $140,000 to support the ever-increasing health care needs of our growing and aging community. The money will be used to support muchneeded programs for local seniors. “The funding was unexpected, but certainly a welcome surprise,” noted Barb Darlow, Board Chair, Arnprior Regional Health. “The growth in our catchment area has put unprecedented pressures on seniors’ services, many of whom are awaiting placement in a long-term care facility.” The additional funds will provide a temporary funding increase to support seniors at home, including community programs such as the Assisted Living Services and the Adult Day Program. “Currently, the wait list of 18 clients is equal to the current capacity of the Assisted Living program. That is unacceptable for our senior population.” In addition to temporary relief in ARH’s community programs, the funding will support initiatives to prepare the organization for anticipated surges in activity during the winter months. Susan Leach, ARH’s Vice President, Patient and Resident Care, explained that the onset of the flu season will result in a spike in both admissions and emergency room visits: “Through training and implementation of new best practices, we can help to prevent readmissions and reduce lengths of stay. These enhancements will help our team cope with surges.”
Local government representatives agree that ARH is on the right track in helping seniors. “We’re pleased that Arnprior Regional Health is strategically investing this funding by expanding community-based programs for seniors and preventing avoidable hospital readmissions and ER visits,” noted Chantale LeClerc, CEO of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), which provided the new dollars. “The LHIN aims to improve access to services and create a more sustainable health system, both in rural and urban settings. The efforts in Arnprior will certainly help achieve those objectives for patients, clients and families.” John Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, added: “This mid-year funding will give Arnprior Regional Health and health care providers across the province the ability to focus on what’s most important, which is helping patients and putting them first. This means each service provider will be able to tailor it to respond to an area where there is an increase in service demands.” “We are grateful for this additional funding,” summed up Eric Hanna, President and CEO, ARH. “It’s great news but we still have more to do. Our next step is to secure the required funding for redevelopment of The Grove, Arnprior’s only long-term care facility. “This expansion would provide care to dozens of seniors who are currently on the wait list or are required to leave Arnprior and their families for care. This is a definite priority for our entire community.”
Our newspaper carriers have difficulty delivering to many homes during the winter due to snow and ice accumulation. In an effort to assist them and to ensure that you continue to receive your newspaper every week, we ask that you please try to remove any snow that may prevent your carrier from delivering to your home.

Town CAO on provincial working group The Town of Arnprior’s Chief Administrative Officer, Michael Wildman, has been appointed to a provincial working group established by the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO). The appointment to the AMCTO Governance Review Engagement Working Group was made by AMCTO’s Board of Directors and will include a panel of five municipal experts from across the province. The Working Group will make recommendations regarding AMCTO Board Governance matters. The Working Group will commence with its mandate in early 2017. Mayor David Reid noted: “Michael is recog-
nized as an experienced municipal professional and as such, Michael is often called upon to assist and provide his insights or perspectives. Michael often volunteers his time particularly with AMCTO, and it is clear that he is respected within municipal circles. The town is proud of his efforts to help such an important provincial association.” With over 2,100 members working in municipalities across Ontario, AMCTO is Canada’s largest voluntary association of local government professionals. And it is also the leading professional development organization for municipal administrative staff.

The late Leonard Cohen jokingly sang of having “the gift of a golden voice,” but Arnprior’s own golden voice is nothing to laugh at. Thomas Cherney, 14, recently scored the top mark in Ontario on The Royal Conservatory’s level 7 voice examination. He accepted the award at a ceremony in Toronto at the conservatory of music’s Koerner Hall. Each year, nearly 100,000 conservatory examinations in various disciplines are written in communities across North America. The Grade 9 student of St. Joseph’s High School takes lessons with Lisa Webber at her Braeside home. She said the award is virtually unprecedented for a boy from the Ottawa Valley, let alone winning it two years in a row. In her 25 years of teaching, only two boys have made it to Thomas’ level. “It’s exceptional to be a winner two years in a row. OPINION
Connected to your community
Driving home the point Ever wonder why police services keep issuing reminders or advisories to the public about adjusting their driving to match weather and road conditions? Even though it might appear to be a so-called no-brainer and just common sense, it appears that some of us do not heed the warnings and end up causing problems for ourselves. Not every collision or traffic-related incident during the winter season is caused by weather and road conditions, but the police keep telling us that a high percentage is as a direct or indirect result of someone whose speed was excessive when factoring in the elements such as snow, ice and reduced visibility. Not having good tires that are better equipped to handle the conditions could be a problem at this time of year; then again, being overconfident as a result of having snow tires or a vehicle that is better equipped than others could also become an issue when conditions deteriorate and extra braking distance is needed in order to avoid a collision. By the way, having all of that good stuff on board might not matter if you don’t make enough of an effort to clear ice and snow from the vehicle before departing. And having brand new snow tires or a vehicle with special features that makes winter driving less of a challenge might not be of much value when the person behind the wheel is distracted. Many of us - including this scribe - can do a better job of avoiding the urge to look down or over to see who just sent a text message, or to reach for a CD or snack. Distracted driving can be even more dangerous when road conditions make it more challenging to stop quickly or get back into the correct lane after the vehicle starts to drift. Most of us are aware of these hazards, but being reminded by the officers who respond to collision calls still serves a useful purpose.
Stand and fight for fair taxation for campgrounds: MP Cheryl Gallant To the editor:
This week, the minister of environment announced that she is holding consultations on Canada’s National Parks, under the title, ‘Let’s Talk Parks, Canada.’ I’d like to welcome the minister to the conversation. I started this conversation last fall when I wrote to family-run campgrounds across Canada. I asked them to support my petition calling on the government to stop taxing family run campgrounds with less than five full-time employees as if they were multi-national corporations. I have been standing up in Parliament to present these petitions as fast as they have been coming in. Over 300 signatures have already

You can join the fight in three ways: Visit www.cherylgallant.com/letstalkparkscanada and tell the Minister to stand up for all campgrounds whether they are family run or government run. Tell your friends on Facebook and Twitter to stand up for campgrounds Go camping for summer vacation!
Over the next few days, I will start posting petition presentation videos on my Facebook Page from all different campgrounds across Canada. If you want to see one from your riding, download the petition, get 25 signatures, and mail it back to me. We have a minister for small business and tourism who won’t stand up for small businesses. We have a Liberal government subsidizing the biggest competitor to family run campgrounds. Worst of all, we have a Parliament full of Liberal MPs who won’t stand up and fight for their constituents.

Not all hibernators sleep winter away This winter has seen a roller-coaster of environmental conditions. There have been periods of “real winter” with fresh snow and invigorating temperatures. There have also warm spells with freezing rain and even rain. The effects of these fluctuating conditions on animals are as varied as the conditions themselves. For some, food resources were easier to find when receding snow revealed seeds. For others, the subnivean space — the crystalized subway under the snow where small mammals roam in relative warmth — flooded or collapsed. Both scenarios spelled trouble for its users when temperatures plummeted. Wild fluctuations in winter temperatures also affect larger animals. black bears, eastern chipmunks, raccoons, striped skunks, and groundhogs vanish in the fall and appear the following spring. “Gifted” but “uncontrollable” child? Don’t drug them…heal them! The world needs them! More and more, parents find their way into my clinic in a desperate attempt to make their life and their childs life easier. They usually have tried it all from counselling to medication and are at a point where it is no longer an option to just sit and wait for a miracle to happen. Their day to day challenges center around managing their child. The school calls to complain about their misbehaviour. Teachers often don’t know what to do, just as parents are at their width end with their patience. Arguments happen way too often and resentment, hatred and overwhelm become a way of life. Yet deep inside every mom and dad know their child is special…. soooo special! Just how can we turn things around? Let me tell you a little story: A few month ago both parents brought their young teenager into my clinic. I work with all of them together but also provide confidential individual time if necessary, as the goal is to respect everyone. Even though the child is going to be treated, mom and dad need to understand the ground work and rules and will be enlightened by my suggestions as it relates to their parenting style. This teenage boy was suffering from anxiety, ADD and ADHD. He is a bright and engaged young teenager, who loves to take control of his life. After the inital assessment I provided some energetic homeopathic remedies. I showed the boy how to take the remedies and he took the first dose right in my office. At the end, I briefly spoke with mom in private, while dad and his son waited in the car. Next month at the follow-up visit, mom was beaming from ear to ear and dad said: I can’t believe this, but he was another child from the first time he took a drop of your remedies! He immediately calmed down and was patiently waiting in the car for mom to come out, without getting impatient or angry as he usually would.” Mom continued saying: “I even can take him shopping now, without being afraid that I’ll have to run out of the store in embarassment of him having a panic attack or a tantrum! His conflict resolution is so much easier and we are actually coming to a conslusion.” Then I turned to the boy and he smiled: “I don’t even have my nightmares anymore!” Healing at it’s purest. No drugs, no side effects! Results can be this immediate! Heilkunst - the different kind of counselling - where everybody counts and not just the one treated. Embrace your family.

Art Tree Project shows open in Arnprior on Jan. 21 at library TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Marlene Schaly planted the seeds. Now there are 25 finished Art Trees and 10 more in progress. The Art Tree Project is a born in Renfrew County - way of marking Canada's 150th birthday. Schaly thinks the endeavour is going well so far and she thinks it will catch on more as the word gets out with the community shows. The first of 12 shows start this week at the Arnprior Public Library, it will run from Jan. 21 to March 8. "This is the opportunity where everybody is the artist and has the opportunity to show their place and heritage in the community," said Schaly. The Art Tree Project is a cre-
ative initiative in which families, schools, businesses and groups can come together to each create their own Art Tree masterpiece. Each completed Art Tree will be owned by its creators and proudly displayed at participating community art shows during Canada's 150th celebrations. There are six different group themes: family, schools, charities, First Nations, business, and community clubs/groups. Schaly encourages people to get involved as there is still lots of time to make a tree. "It's feeling a part of your community and celebrating your heritage," said Schaly. The cost of a kit to create the Art Tree is $100 and it comes boxed with an archival art print of the tree, design sheet, lettering, extra art papers, instructions on art techniques and the logo. The Art Tree Project is a
not-for-profit initiative run entirely by volunteers. "It brings out the inner artist and engages people to be creative," said Schaly. "It's all inclusive, no matter what your age, ability or background." Schaly is proud that the project has started in the Ottawa Valley and has branched out across the country. "We are close to having participation from every province," said Schaly. She also recently received an order from British Columbia for seven schools to create trees with local artists to help create them. The project is also officially approved by Heritage Canada as a Canada 150 project. UPCOMING SHOWS From Arnprior the show moves to the Renfrew with four different shows: at the library
from March 9 to May 5; St. Joseph's High School from May 6 to June 29; Ma-Te-Way Park from June 30 to July 2; and during the fair from Sept. 4 to 10. In Calabogie the show makes two stops at St. Andrew's United Church from June 30 to July 4 and at the Calabogie Community Hall from June 30 to Aug. 4. There are also two chances to catch the shows in White Lake from July 3 to Aug. 4 at the Women's Institute Hall and during Herbfest on July 30 at the Waba Cottage. The show will be in Eganville at the Bonnechere Museum from Aug. 4 to Sept. 3, Pembroke from Sept. 11 to Oct. 22, and finally in Shawville from Oct. 23 to Nov. 27. Girl Guides create Art Tree to mark Canada’s 150 The Art Tree Project is a community event celebrating Canada 150. The newspaper is featuring a number of trees that have already produced and to view the trees in person visit one of 12 local shows. If you would like more information on how to create your own tree go to your www.arttreeproject.ca .
The Arnprior Girl Guides are register in the community section and their tree was spearheaded by Caitlin Robillard, Stacy Reid and Jessica Morsink. In the last 100 years, seven million Canadian girls and women have been involved in guiding. Throughout its history, Girl Guides of Canada has prepared girls to meet the challenges that they face in their lives head on. Whether it was girls learning to bandage wounds during the First World War or girls today working on their anti-bullying badge, guiding continually evolves to reflect the needs and interests of contemporary girls and women. Today, guiding’s innovative programming is helping the next generation of Canadian girls become confident, courageous and resourceful leaders. It all began in 1909, when girls in England demanded to take part in a Boy Scouts rally. Within a year, the guiding movement had begun in England and had reached Canada with the first unit formed in St. Catharine’s, ON. By 1912, there were units in every province and many of Canada’s most forward-thinking women banded together to form the Canadian Girl Guides Association. The Arnprior District Girl Guide Association proudly boasts a long history in guiding with its first company organized in 1946. Its 70-year history has been faithfully carved out by dedicated leaders and eager girls from the town of Arnprior and surrounding area. The town of “Two Rivers” is
proudly reflected on our district crest portraying the junction of the Ottawa and Madawaska River, designed by one of our local Girl Guides. Cookie sales continue to be our main fundraiser. The district camp at Crown Point allows the girls to enjoy an active program of camping in a well-outfitted facility with water activities. Presently there are 85 girls enrolled in our Arnprior units with 13 dedicated leaders. Our location is at the Christian Education Centre on John Street in Arnprior. Girl Guides continues to be a place that sparks the imagination of girls to take their place in the world and take action on what matters to them. As female role models, our adult members support girls to achieve and succeed – through fun, adventures and challenges. Description of tree Being a former Girl Guide, Caitlin Robillard, a teen from Arnprior District High School decided to be the leader in this Art Tree -celebrating guiding in the Arnprior area. Several guiding leaders were consulted and together they came up with a design. The first step saw Caitlin printing the values of guiding along the trunk and branches of the tree. Next, the complete print was painted with a liquid sealant. This allowed us to paint the complete background blue and green with a transparent look. We used a high quality colored inks with an acrylic glaze medium. A variety of badges are utilized in the design in the tree and at the roots. A good representation of badges from the four different guiding groups: Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders are all represented. The badges at the roots of the tree have their description as well the guiding logo. The lettering and leaves were created from dark blue and green construction paper and cut out with a cricut from one of the guiding leaders.

The Music of Broadway comes to Arnprior Beat the winter blues with Broadway. ‘The Music of Broadway’ concert will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m. at Grace St. Andrew's United Church. Come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of singing with the vocal students of Lisa Webber. Musicals such as Annie, Wicked, Anne of Green Gables, Chicago, Hamilton, Thirteen, Chorus Line and many more will be featured. There will even be several opportunities to sing along with your favourite songs. The young performers have a wide range of experience. Many perform in school musicals, local festivals, provincial competitions and Two Rivers Musical Productions. Ranging from 10 to 18, the school-age students are all energetic, enthusiastic and very talented. They love every opportunity to perform in front of an audience, and some see themselves going on to music programs after graduation. Soprano Mallory Brumm will be
an MC along with teacher Lisa Webber. The two will introduce the songs, the musicals and create a Broadway show experience. Brumm is currently doing a high school co-op placement in Webber's music studio. Performing and hosting this concert is one of many projects that Brumm has been involved with. This is fitting, because Brumm won the Most Outstanding Musical Theatre Performance in her age category at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Festival held in Ottawa this past October. Many of the young singers also performed at the same Ottawa Festival and all were very successful. We have so much talent here in Arnprior! Joining the young performers is the ladies group, TUTTI. All take voice lessons, and all like to perform within the community. They will perform their own mu-
sical numbers, and together all the singers will present "I'd Do Anything" from Oliver and "Together Wherever We Go" from Gypsy. Come out and enjoy a great afternoon of Broadway music, and also support two community programs. There will be a Freewill Donation in support of Two Rivers Musical Productions. As well, for Canada's 150th celebrations, the Town of Arnprior has compiled 150 events held throughout Arnprior in 2017. "The Music of Broadway" is one of the 150 events. Residents and visitors are encouraged to pick up a passport at an event or at one of the participating locations and gather stamps at as many events as possible throughout the year. Bring your passport, bring your Broadway belt and bring your love for the arts in our community - a perfect combination on a winter af-

and a major for a second fight, which resulted in two game misconducts. Captain Dan Monk received three game misconducts for fighting, being in a second fight and being the third man in on another altercation. Tyler Orban also received a game misconduct for fighting. Tyler Ollson was penalized at 13:09 for slew-footing and sat out on Saturday night as well. “We lost Bangs, Monk, and Ollson due to suspensions. Perth started the fighting and it cost us losing players for two games,” said Iob, who also sat out the next game. “I was not on the bench (Saturday) because of the fights that happened Friday night. If there are two fights during the same stoppage, the coach receives a one-game suspension.” Perth coach Michael McLean said it was a tough game to lose — and it broke the Blue Wings nine-game win streak. “I was not happy with our game Laurie Weir/Metroland on Friday night,” McLean said. “We The Arnprior Packers defeated the Perth Blue Wings 5-2 in CCHL2 league place in Perth on Jan. 13. A scram- gave them everything they got, and ble in front of the Packers net results in a valiant effort by goalie Tom Meyerhans to save the shot, Meyer- they were full marks for the victory.”
It was battle of the best in the league and the Arnprior Packers came out victorious. The boys wearing green and gold travelled to Perth Friday, Jan. 13 to challenge the Perth Blue Wings for first place of the Richardson Division of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League. The Packers handed the Blue Wings only their fifth loss of the season as Arnprior defeated them 5-2. Arnprior had the chance to take first place away from Perth, but a loss on Sunday means the Packers are in second place with 58 points behind the Blue Wings with 59. “We played a very solid game Friday night,” said Tony Iob, Packers head coach, in an email to the newspaper. “The team stuck to the game plan, played a full 60 minute game.” However, things got wild in the third period At 7:39 of the final frame, there was a melee of action. Ryan Bangs got a fighting major hans made 47 saves in the win.

Packers come out strong versus Perth
Four Arnprior players suspended in lively game against Blue Wings From page 19
McLean called it a good “wake up call” for the Blue Wings. The Packers came out strong against Perth as Greg Heika got on the score sheet first at 5:27. The Packers didn’t let up in the second as Bangs scored at the 10:46 mark assisted by Matthew Labrosse and Heika. Perth got on the board at 15:29 of the second followed by Jack Chudleigh for the Packers at 17:28. In the wild third period, Labrosse got on the board first assisted by Monk at 4:30. Bailey Hein scored on the power play at 12:22 and the Blue Wings added one more at 15:58. Arnprior 4 Metcalfe 5 The Packers could have taken over first place on Sunday, Jan. 15 with a win over the Metcalfe Jets, who are in third place of the Martin Division with 46 points. But being short-handed hindered the team as they fell 5-4 to the Jets. “Sunday night we played very short handed due to injuries and suspensions. The team stuck with it but fell short at the end,” said Iob. “We have some time to heal and get ready for Prescott next Sunday.” It was a back and forth affair Sunday night in Arnprior as Metcalfe had the lone goal of the first, followed by two periods where both teams scored two goals. In the second period, the Jets drew first blood at 3:52. Then, at 7:40, Labrosse scored short-handed for the

Packers, assisted by Hein and Andrew MacKinnon. The Jets responded again at 10:26. The special teams helped out for Arnprior as Brad Richardson scored on the power play at 19:39, assisted by Heika. Again, the special teams helped the Packers in the third as both Arnprior goals were scored on the power play. Hein got his second goal of the game at 3:18, assisted by Alexandre Ferraton. Labrosse also got his second goal, assisted by Hein and Ferraton at 5:26. The Jets just kept on fighting as they put the game away with two more goals at 7:29 and 12:24. The Jets served 20 minutes in the sin bin on 10 infractions while the Packers had 40 minutes on 12 infractions. The third period got heated with a number of roughing and interference calls. Especially of note at the 16:57 mark was when Arnprior’s Alex Caparelli got called for high sticking and Metcalfe’s Noah Johnston also got two minutes for tripping. In the same play, Arnprior’s Chudleigh got called for a 10-minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct and a game misconduct for harassment of an official. Tyler Orr also got called for interference with 18:17 to go in the third period. The Packers have one game this week when they host the sixth-place Prescott Flyers, on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.

Team Grace would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made our First Annual Grace Olivia Memorial Golf Tournament possible. First, a huge thank you to the amazing staff at Sand Point Golf Course who made this event run so smoothly and who helped us navigate through our first year of organizing. We look forward to working with you all again in the near future! Another huge thank you goes out to all the local businesses and individuals who donated prizes, trophies, signage, and funds. Without you this tournament would not have happened. We are so fortunate to live in this amazing and supportive community. Thank you to all the volunteers who sat in the rain running games, selling t-shirts, selling raffle tickets, and helping to set up. It is humbling to know we have so many fantastic people on our team! Finally, thank you to all who came out and supported this special day amid the rainy conditions, and who helped us keep Grace’s spirit alive and thriving here in Arnprior. We are so pleased to announce that we raised a total of $8,000 at our first tournament! These funds will go towards a scholarship at ADHS, and some new sporting equipment at St. John XXIII and St. Joseph’s Catholic Schools, all of which Grace attended. We are also very excited to announce that the Second Annual Grace Olivia Memorial Tournament will take place on August 5th, 2017 at the Sand Point Golf Course. For updates and information, please like our “Team Grace” Facebook page. We hope to see you all again in August for GOgolf 2017!

Remember the joy, the laughter, The smiles, I’ve only gone to rest awhile. Although my leaving caused pain and grief, My going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, Not as I am now but as I used to be. I will remember you all and look on with a smile, Understand in your hearts I’ve only gone to rest awhile. As long as I have the love of each of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you. Say Hi to Mom and give her hugs and kisses from us

January 23, 2015 When I come to the end of my journey, And I travel my last weary mile, Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned, And remember only the smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken; Remember some good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache, And remember I’ve had loads of fun. Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered, And sometimes fell by the way. Remember I have fought some hard battles and won, Ere the close of the day. Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day, But in summer just gather some flowers And remember the place where I lay, And come in the evening When the sun paints the sky in the west. Stand for a few moments beside me And remember only my best. Love Kathleen

Arnprior PM kicks off cross-country tour inlegion Manotick recognizes local youth
BY ERIN MCCRACKEN erin.mccracken@metroland.com
Coffee talk at Miller's Oven in Manotick may not be the same for some time, after the prime minister stopped in to the popular non-profit eatery on Thursday to kick off his cross-country tour to stay connected to Canadians. "It was a little overwhelming, but it was good," said Manotick resident Anne Mask, following the early morning visit on Jan. 12. "You know, small non-profit restaurant, to be the first on his tour ... You can't pay for that kind of advertising. "We felt very blessed," said Mask, a longtime restaurant board member and volunteer. It marks the first time a Canadian prime minister has visited the volunteer-run restaurant, which has been in @JustinTrudeau/Twitter operation within the 150-plus-year-old restaurant since 1983.
