Hockey Day in Arnprior hits the ice this Saturday DEREK DUNN Derek.dunn@metroland.com

The annual Hockey Day in Arnprior is back again this weekend, on Saturday, Jan. 27. There is plenty of fun to be had on the ice and off all day long and into the night, said organizer Kathy MacKenzie. She is on the executive board of Arnprior Minor Hockey Association (AMHA). And while Canada’s game will be the centre of attention, she said other activities are held to welcome non-hockey people.

“This is a chance for the hockey community to get together and celebrate the game,” MacKenzie said. “We also have a breakfast and games for the kids and a dance at night.” Breakfast runs from 7-11:30 a.m. in the Nick Smith Centre hall. From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. the hardest shot competition (with prizes) for tyke to bantam ages takes place in the same room. Throughout the day will be raffles, 50/50 draws, Highlanders baseball information table, and more. All Packers teams will play home games, beginning with tykes at 7 a.m.

up to midgets versus Pembroke at 6:30 p.m. A special ceremony will take place in the morning celebrating the life and contributions of Bruce Armsden. The long-time volunteer and Jr. B Packers staff member for almost six decades will have a plaque mounted in the lobby. Armsden died in 2016. New this year is the “Rock’n Skating Party” open to the public. A live DJ and light show will entertain skaters, just like back in the roller skating days. The music will range from the 1980s to contemporary.

That should get adults primed for Hair Force One back in the community hall from 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. The 1980s-themed band has played several AMHA events, to much acclaim. “They’re really good. They put on a really good show and dress the part,” MacKenzie said. “Come out in your best 80s outfit. Everybody’s welcome.” Only those of legal drinking age are allowed at the dance. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets will be at Nick Smith on Saturday. All team managers have tickets. Or contact MacKenzie at 613-219-3132.

backyard and forced open a back door. Once inside several rooms were searched and stolen property includes an I-pad, cash, prescription medication, radio scanner, two pairs of sunglasses (Oakley and Foxwood Jupiter), a black and pink duffle bag, gold cuff links, crucifixes (gold and silver) and a Fossil watch. The suspects then exited through the front door. Const. Erin Densmore is leading the investigation. Police would like to speak to the owner of a fish hut that was broken into. Marc Bennett should be contacted if the owner

wishes to report further information. The PCC is available for all non-emergency calls to police 24 hours a day seven days a week. You are encouraged to program this number into your cell phone as it is operational anywhere in Ontario should you need to call the OPP. A vehicle parked in a driveway on John Street in Cobden was entered on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8:30 p.m. A male thief was seen running away from the scene. Prescription medication was stolen. Const. Kyle Mask is continuing to investigate. Vehicle owners are encouraged to remove valuables from their vehicles as much as possible. Thieves know that they can quickly enter an unlocked vehicle and search centre consoles or glove boxes. Please remove prescription medications, wallets, cell phones, sunglasses and anything else of value to you. Get into the habit of locking your vehicle at all times. Thieves are often very lazy; if your vehicle is locked they move on to find another victim.

Campaign shortens this election year No major changes to council pay DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Political junkies out there might be waiting impatiently at the front door for municipal candidates to come knocking. After all, it is January of an election year that sees voters go to the polls on Oct. 22. They will be disappointed. The province passed legislation tightening the campaign period, along with upping the requirements to run, allowing ranked ballots and rules around thirdparty advertising. Prior to this year, the nomination period started on Jan. 2 and continued through to midSeptember. It now runs from May 1 to July 23, thanks to passage of Bill 181, the Municipal Elections Modernization Act. A second change will make it tougher on fringe candidates. Some jurisdictions have repeat candidates who win few votes, but find a platform for their views. Now, they must scour the electorate for 25 endorsement signatures. A third change means corporations and trade unions are no longer eligible to do third-party advertising. After registering with the clerk’s office, third-party advertisers can promote or oppose any candidate (mayoral, reeve, council, school board trustee positions). The advertising must be done independently of candidates, who are not able to direct the advertiser and cannot

register as third-party advertisers themselves. Candidates pay a fee to run: $200 for mayoral race; $100 for all other positions. Arnprior council recently received the annual report on its pay, compiled by an ad hoc committee comprised of residents Lori van Wyk, Peter Anas, Chris Couper and Rick Farrell. They were tasked with conducting a market review for council compensation in year three of the fouryear term. It was determined that Arnprior, the third-most populous municipality in Renfrew County, was paying council members either second or third-highest. They suggested keeping pay at the current level, with the exception of an increase due to the loss of the one-third tax-free allowance and cost-of-living adjustments. It will continue to be reviewed once every term. The mayor’s salary is $30,330 annually; the reeve and the five councillors are paid $15,840. Everyone’s monthly allowance includes $50 for internet, $35 for cellular and $30 for mileage. They also get $150 full-day and $75 half-day per diem to attend out-of-town events. Each has use of a laptop or tablet. Voting on Oct. 22 takes place between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Electors have the option of voting by telephone or online. For more information, contact town clerk Maureen Spratt at 613-623-4231, ext. 1817, or mspratt@arnprior.ca.

For past 10 years, Hospice Renfrew has been place to ‘live not die’ TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

For the last 10 years, Hospice Renfrew has been normalizing the process of dying. The agency offers much comfort to patients in their final days. A piece of strawberry and vanilla cake sits on the table beside Robbie Kraft’s bed and she places her hand on a birdwatching book. Maureen Sullivan-Bentz, Hospice Renfrew’s executive director, says this is the best room to birdwatch. Kraft’s eyes light up and she seems full of life talking about the birds she has seen in her three-week stay away from her home in Pembroke. “It’s been a rough road … here it reminds me of home,” said Kraft. “If it gets any better, I just can’t explain it. I don’t have to lift a finger.” So far she has seen two partridges, as identified by the book. “I’ve got to make sure I am naming the right birds,” she says with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. She said if she had the help at home it would be different, alluding to why she needed to come to hospice. “Everything is good here, they will have me all fattened up,” she says with a chuckle. “It’s just beautiful, I am receiving phenomenal care and I just can’t explain how good it is here.” Her husband chimes in.

Hospice Renfrew is governed by a volunteer board that represents the interests of residents and their families from across Renfrew County. Hospice Renfrew is pleased to welcome its board for 2017-2018. From left are Owen Snider, Connie Legg, Gerald Tracey, Maureen SullivanBentz, Dr. Stephanie Langlois, and in back: Leo Hall-director, Matt Beimers, Bill McMahon, Donna Anderson, Karen McEwen, Jim MacKillican, Jamie Cybulski, and George Wade. “It’s so good she doesn’t want to go home,” Don added. Living: it is what Hospice Renfrew is about. “You come to hospice to live and not to die,” said Jim MacKillican, who went to his first meeting for hospice in 2005. He is now an advisor on the Hospice Renfrew board. “You come here to live in the best possible way.” Connie Legg has been one of the driving forces behind Hospice Renfrew from its first meeting. She now sits as an advisor on the board. Her proudest accomplishment over these 10 years is how they have nor-

malized a little bit what a residential hospice is. “It’s not a scary and dark place, it is quite the opposite,” said Legg who admits the process was a slow start because people did not know what a residential hospice was. “It was a really good idea and we were really passionate, but we had no guarantee that it would work. It was, ‘if we build it will they come?’ I think there was a little bit of a stigma about going to a place where people die … We have become part of the community and accepted into I think what people now realize is a really important part of health care

in Renfrew County.” The first rural hospice in Ontario will mark its 10th anniversary on Jan. 28, the first day it officially welcomed a patient. Since then it has served about 1,000 families who have come to receive palliative care in their dying days. The six-bed facility serves all of Renfrew County with all programs and services free of charge. However, Hospice Renfrew is required to fundraise half of the annual budget, which is $630,000. All board members acknowledge the amazing community support. “The fact is it’s just such a compassionate part of our community and we have volunteers that are helping to operate this facility,” said Legg of the 70 active volunteers who provide 7,000 volunteer hours of service each year. “We have community support that people are willing to give of both time and money to keep us a float.” When it comes to marking the monumental anniversary, they decided to give back to the community. “We wanted to thank the community for the financial support and engage the community,” said SullivanBentz. Some of the events are fundraisers and the others are more about awareness. Events include: Feb. 11 at the Arnprior Library: Children’s Super Hero Meet and Greet; April 6: Paint Night at Arnprior Library; May 6:

Another new initiative is the Power of 10 campaign, in which 10 family members or friends each raise $100 for a total of $1,000 (or for kids $10 each for a total of $100). “Each $100 - that is one trip to the grocery store - and if 10 people raise $1,000 that pays the hydro bill for the month,” said Sullivan-Bentz. “We are really trying to show people what their dollar gets.” Hospice is also partnering with St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, which has chosen Hospice Renfrew as its charity of choice for the next two years. The students have toured the facility, raised funds via a walk, and even baked 30 tins of cookies for the residents over the holidays. “It’s all about engaging the younger generation on what hospice and palliative care is all about,” said SullivanBentz. And as they look to fundraise and move forward into the next 10 years and beyond it is that next generation who is already showing they are up for the challenge. Fraudster attempts to gain rental deposits for apartment OPP REPORT

On Jan. 12, a landlord in Arnprior advised that they had posted an apartment for rent on a buy and sell website and that someone was pretending to be them and trying to get deposit money from people. The complainant wasn’t sure who the person was but advised they were taking the ad down. There are no suspects. Police are investigating after a nurse at the Bonnechere Manor reported one resident suffered injuries and they may have been assaulted by another resident on Monday, Jan. 1 at about 10:20 p.m. The victim was transported to hospital by paramedics. The investigation is continuing with assistance from the OPP forensic identification services and the Renfrew crime unit. Const. Marc Bennett is leading the investigation.

Sexual Assault Officers investigated a sexual assault report when a victim called police on Sunday Jan. 7 in Arnprior. The woman reported a man known to her sexually assaulted her. Police made an arrest Jan. 8. Charged with sexual assault is a 61-year-old man. He was held in custody for a bail hearing on Jan. 9. Det. Const. Wendy Saunders is leading the investigation. Thefts On Jan. 3, Const. Patrick O’Connor investigated a theft from a home on Stewartville Road in the Township of McNab/Braeside. The victim reported cash and other items stolen from the home, and video evidence of a family friend stealing the items. When confronted concerning the theft the suspect returned the cash but denied stealing other items. The OPP began their investigation and then stopped

when the victim decided they would deal with the theft without police involvement. Trespassing On Jan. 2 a rental property owner reported someone was residing in a property on Russett drive in McNab Braeside Township without permission or authorization. Officers learned the property had been rented to someone who moved out on Dec. 31. The owner then learned the girlfriend of the previous tenant was continuing to live in the home. Police attended and confirmed a woman was living at the address. She agreed to move out immediately when requested. No charges were laid. Domestic Violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated five domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with assault, mischief and

being unlawfully in a dwelling, one female was charged with assault and one female was charged with operating a motor vehicle over 80mg. No other criminal offences took place. Break and enter On Thursday, Jan. 11 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., a home on Tierney Street South in Arnprior was entered. There was no sign of forced entry. A Lenovo laptop computer and a quantity of American currency were stolen. PC Kyle Brown is investigating. Mischief On Thursday, Jan. 11 at approximately 2:30 a.m. a car window was smashed in Arnprior. The car was parked on Landrigan Street at the time. There is no suspect. Impaired Driver On Thursday, Jan. 18 at approximately 1:25 a.m. Const. Kyle Mask stopped to assist a motorist with their

four-way flashers on stopped on the shoulder of Highway 17 near Haley Road in the Township of Whitewater Region. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcoholscreening test. Following breath tests at the detachment a 22-year-old male of Whitewater Region was charged with care or control of a motor vehicle over 80 mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court. RIDE Spot Checks Arnprior and Renfrew OPP officers conducted 19 RIDE spot checks during the past week. No impaired drivers were located. Motorists are encouraged to continue to make wise choices and always drive sober. Motorists should also continue to expect to encounter officers conducting RIDE spot checks. Should you suspect a motorist is driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol call 911.

Steer clear this winter Safe winter driving requires drivers slowing down and anticipating hazards before they become a problem. This can’t be done if the vehicle’s windows are covered in frost, snow or ice. Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind us that the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario provides fines of $110 to motorists who drive without a clear view; but as we know, the consequences can be worse if you injure someone. Give yourself some extra time and make sure you have a clear view before you put your vehicle in gear. While on the topic of snow clearing, there are plenty of blue and yellow lights flashing on the highways as snow-removal equipment is in use after heavy snowfalls. Municipalities have a system or protocol for plowing roadways and sidewalks. Lower-priority locations will take longer to get because that’s the way it is. Although we encourage anyone who has an issue with the snow-clearing system in his or her community to voice those concerns to the appropriate municipal official, please be patient and help where you can by not leaving your ve-

hicles where they would block winter road maintenance efforts. There’s also the issue of taking snow from private property and placing it onto a public roadway or sidewalk. This might not seem like a big deal, but plowing snow to where it could pose a public safety hazard to motorists and pedestrians is an offence. The vast majority of property owners and contractors don’t do it, but it’s something that can cause problems unnecessarily. Another scenario which is more of an issue is motorists who do not clear ice and snow from their vehicles and then pose a threat because of their limited visibility or the effect that flying ice can have on other drivers. Making more of an effort to minimize the risk posed by winter weather and its effect on travelling seems like a reasonable request. We should expect our provincial and municipal governments to provide adequate road maintenance services, but some of us can do a better job of assisting them by not getting in their way when the snow flies.

Minimum wage hikes will not help the poor To the editor: As of Jan. 1, the minimum wage in Ontario is now set at $14 per hour, benefitting the bottom lines of many of Ontario’s workers and stirring continuous excitement and controversy. Endless arguments have been made back and forth that the move will kill jobs and hurt businesses, or create jobs and help businesses. One thing that the minimum wage increase will surely not do, however, is cause a decrease in poverty. It would seem intuitive that minimum wage increases would necessarily empower the poor. Workers with the lowest wages tend to be poorer and therefore closer to the deficiency of poverty. Yet in reality those who work at minimum wage tend to live in households shared with multiple earners whose shared

earnings are above the poverty line. Access to minimum wage work is generally a middleclass privilege. By contrast, those who live in poverty tend to lack access to employment altogether, or only have part-time work above the minimum wage. This was the conclusion of the review of research by the Minimum Wage Advisory Panel struck by the Ontario Liberal government in 2013. Likewise, a 2011 paper in the journal of Labour Economics found that a 10 per cent rise in the minimum wage is associated with a four-six per cent increase in the percentage of families living under low income cut offs. For the non-working poor, the minimum wage increase may make them worse off than before in chances of gaining employment. Employers will be more encouraged to replace low-skilled labour with auto-

mation and technology. Of course the money spent from higher resulting wages would create new jobs elsewhere, but the newly created jobs will not likely employ the most trapped Ontarians. For years the Ontario Liberal government complied with the recommendations of the advisory panel that minimum wage increases be tied to the rate of inflation. But then suddenly in 2017 the Liberals decided that was not good enough, and proposed the recent changes that would see the minimum rise to $15.00 per hour by 2019. Now what is more likely, that the Liberals accelerated minimum wage increases because of new evidence, or that the Liberals are making short-sighted cynical calculations in the face of an imminent election? Make no mistake: the minimum wage increase is not in-

tended to empower the poor so much as cravenly appeal to middle-class voters. The lobby in support of minimum wage increases speaks with a loud and unified voice, whereas the Ontarians whose stake is in empowering the non-working poor are a more disorganized force. Ontarians pushing for poverty reduction should unite in support of reforming social assistance to a form of basic income and reduced welfare bureaucracy. They and their representative politicians should play no part in any scheme that leaves the unemployed poor lagging behind. To the editor: Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, Old Fort William Cottagers’ Association and many other intervenors in the upcoming CNSC relicensing hearing Jan. 23-25 in Pembroke are not opposed to the Chalk River facility. We are in favour of strict regulatory oversight and the best quality, state-of-the art facilities that will keep radioactive waste out of our air and water, as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency. There are nuclear waste liabilities at the Chalk River site that have been estimated at $7.6 billion. It is clear that there will be jobs at Chalk River for many generations, looking after these wastes and keeping them out of the biosphere. Chalk River could be a leader in responsible radioactive waste management, creating facilities we could all be proud of and that would set an example for the rest of the world to follow. Loss of newspapers means loss of history Unsavory politics in riding To the editor: I was sorry to read recently that several papers in the area have closed, such as the West Carleton Review. As an archivist and family history researcher, I treasure the rich details revealed in community newspapers throughout the 19th and early 20th century. Newspapers are one of the richest sources of information available to help us understand how communities develop and change over time. Where else can you find coverage of the fires that swept through Arnprior in 1975 and Renfrew in the 1980s? How many times do you wish you had kept an article that covered a local incident, obituary or sports event? I came across an interesting piece in the Arnprior Chronicle of July 1885 that is of relevance today: The Arnprior Chronicle, Friday,

July 3, 1885 - The country newspaper is the most useful of all the agencies which stamp the impress of progress upon villages and inland cities. Without the aid of local newspapers towns are, as a rule, thriftless and dead. It is common for small and great men to speak with content of the local newspapers, but the village newspaper makes more great men out of less material – more bricks without straw – than any other factor in politics, and it is the one ladder on which men climb to local distinctions as the beginning of wider fame. The advent of the local newspaper has always dated the increased thrift of the community. The local newspaper is the life of the locality, and measures the advancement of the people. Subscribe then to THE CHRONICLE, and get a paper that will keep

you posted on all matters of importance pertaining to the county in which it is published. [Editors John Munn and John A. MacDonald] Sincerely, Laurie Dougherty Arnprior

To the editor: Most of the citizens in the riding are probably unaware that the sitting federal MP, Cheryl Gallant, is being challenged for the Conservative party’s nominee in the next federal election planned for June 2019. This is a first time this has occurred since Ms. Gallant became the Reform Party’s nominee back in 2000, some five elections ago. Healthy for the riding’s

democracy I thought, when the challenger, Mike Coates announced his candidacy a mere two weeks before Christmas. It hasn’t taken long for our riding’s experiment in direct democracy to begin a downward spiral into dirty politics, which in this party member’s view, is an all-too-familiar behavioural pattern for Ms. Gallant and her associates. The chipmunk that just doesn’t sleep MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

With this winter’s crazy roller-coaster ride of temperatures, it’s easy to understand why some animals that normally are not seen out and about in winter have been active on occasion. Raccoons and striped skunks typically slumber away most of this season of cold in their winter dens but on warm winter days they will make an appearance. A raccoon’s winter den is usually inside a hollow tree where the animal depends on its body fat accumulated in the fall to keep it warm. A winter den, which is different than a summer den, usually contains a number of raccoons all curled up together. As many as 23 raccoons have been found sharing one den. Skunks, on the other hand, usually spend winter in solitary confinement in dens deep underground. Also, unlike raccoons, they line their dens with plant material, even plugging the den’s entrance with plant material before retiring for the winter. However, neither raccoons nor skunks are true hibernators. Their body temperatures and heart rates fall only slightly below normal levels, bringing their owners into a dormant stage called lethargy. Under warm conditions, both species readily become active. On the other hand, a true hibernator is an animal whose heart and respiration rates

become so greatly depressed that they are barely perceptible. Its heart rate drops to one so slow that someone could easily conclude the animal was dead. Those animals enter a deep sleep that is only briefly broken a couple of times each winter. Groundhogs fall into that category and, perhaps surprising to you, are the largest true hibernators in the world. When a warm snap occurs in winter, as has happened twice in recent weeks, groundhogs do not even blink an eye. In winter, eastern chipmunks experience

Progressive leadership required

a type of dormancy that is different from all of the aforementioned animals. Unlike striped skunks, raccoons and groundhogs, chipmunks store food for the winter because they do not sleep for long periods of time and must eat. They awaken every few days (usually between four and six) to visit the lavatory, raid the pantry and take out the garbage before retiring to their sleeping chambers. All of those activities take place underground. Chipmunks create complex burrows with multiple chambers of which one or more are used for food storage, another for sleeping and others for disposing of body wastes and litter. When food such as acorns is plentiful and large amounts are cached away, the pantries sustain their maker through winter and early spring. However, when insufficient supplies are stored, chipmunks do starve. But this winter I’ve been watching a chipmunk regularly gather seeds and cracked corn from under my feeders. With cheeks bulging, it runs across the snow and vanishes down a hole under a boxwood shrub. Perhaps it ran out of food prematurely or had something happen to its stores (chipmunks are known to raid the stores of other chipmunks). Regardless, the little fellow is fortunate to have found a supply of food so close to its den. Or perhaps it has a sleeping disorder and discovered it has a penchant for corn! I’ll let you make your own judgment about the following facts. As a Conservative party member located in RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke, I was shocked to receive notification from the national party headquarters late last week of the closing date (tentatively Feb. 23-24) for selling memberships for the first competitive Conservative nomination process in 20 years. Yes you read that right, the challenger has less than three weeks to make his case to Conservative party members in the riding and sell enough memberships to win. This when the process only informally started days before Christmas. This is stunning and absolutely ridiculous! We all know the election isn’t for at least another 15 months. Being somewhat skeptical, a conclusion one can draw from this is that the fix is in! The incumbent in my opinion has likely put pressure on the right places at party headquarters to have the 21-day nomination period virtually immediately. As things stand now, I have no doubt the riding executive, undoubtedly all groomed by Ms. Gallant, will see to it that the nomination meeting will be scheduled in the North end of the riding on some snowy night in late-February. This is a big riding! We all know it takes two hours to drive from one end of this riding to the other. To put people’s lives at risk to exercise their democratic right, just to satisfy the incumbent’s insatiable appetite to hold on to her fiefdom, is absolutely appalling. The timeline for the nomination process is without precedent. There’s simply no justification for it. Let’s take 90 days, not 30 and get this right. In a riding like ours, positive progressive leadership is an absolute necessity now more than ever. J. Hugh Brownlee White Lake

MCGREGOR, MARY EVA CAROLINE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Mary Eva Caroline McGregor on Friday January 12th, surrounded by love at Hospice Renfrew, after a short battle with cancer. She was born and raised in the Renfrew area before adventuring to live on the ranches of Alberta, to live on a boat in the waters off Vancouver and then to return home to Renfrew to spend time with family and friends. Her greatest joy was her family. She was so proud of her children, Rick and Kim, Julie and Al and Loni and Tyler but got the most joy watching her grandchildren grow to be exceptional people. Alysha, Aleena, Alexandra, Vik, Aden, Cameron, Olivia and Brody filled her heart with love. We will all miss her deeply. We would like to specifically thank her cousins Graham and June. Graham and June spent many hours with Mom, bringing her treats and sending updates to us during her illness. We cannot express how much their love and support meant to our Mom and to us. We will be forever grateful. We would also like to thank everyone for providing support to our family during the last few months and we would like to thank everyone who went out of their way to call or visit our Mom. Each visit made her so happy and made it easier for us who could not be there. We would like to thank the Hospice Renfrew who provided excellent care for her over the past few months. The staff and volunteers at the Hospice are very exceptional people and made Mom and all those that visited feel as comfortable as possible. All Professional Services were entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew (formerly Anderson) At her request there will not be a funeral but the family will hold a graveside memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Renfrew online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com

Penelope Elizabeth (Betty) Reece 1931-2018 Passed away after a short battle with cancer. She will be sadly missed by daughters Kathleen, Karen, son Timothy (Lucia), granddaughters Krista, Karlee, grandson William and his mother Beth. Pre-deceased by her husband of 51 years, Clare Jamieson, who always wanted to marry a redhead. He did, as she dyed her hair as a surprise for the wedding. Known for being able to move a car from one side of the garage to the other without opening the doors and being the BEST folder of laundry. She said all she wanted for Christmas was her family to be with her (and meant it). Betty was a talented folk artist, both painting and rugs, prolific reader of “Nurse Betty” books and an okay cook, as her understanding of recipe ingredients was creative. Special thanks goes to the many exceptional caregivers at the Cooksville Care Center who showed such compassion and generosity. At Betty’s request, there will be a private family service in the Spring with interment in Windsor. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting your local arts organization. In loving memory of a dear wife and best friend who passed away 1 year ago, January 26, 2017 at 5:25 am. I remember the day I met you, and the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will remember “Till the end of time”. We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, my whole world feel apart. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe its true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you. And the memories of the happy 68 years, When were together with our 8 children, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, Will stay with me and family, And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, Cheer up and carry on. Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday. Till we meet again, Love always, Gordon and Family

Certainly, they would be well hidden under my navy blue fleece bloomers, but I would be well aware that I was wearing flour bags. I was pretty sure that just about every girl at the Northcote school wore flour bag underwear, too, except bad Marguirite, of course. She delighted in telling us whenever she got a new pair of underwear, not the least bit shy at sharing that bit of information with the entire girl population at school. I had no choice but to put them on, and I said a silent prayer of thanks that they would be hidden under the navy blue fleecies. No one would know but me. PROUD RECIPIENT OF THE DIAMOND AWARD in the following categories: Dentist • Denturist • Teeth Whitening

Thank You!

Dentistry@Arnprior “Keeping Our Community Smiling!” Providing quality dental care since January 2010, Dentistry@Arnprior has built a loyal clientele by offering specialized services at affordable prices. “Our patients don’t have to travel into the city to get quality care and specialist services,” said Office Manager Glenda Reid. And patients agree. In fact, Dentistry@Arnprior was the Diamond Award Winner in Readers’ Choice category for Dentist, Denturist and Teeth Whitening. D. Smith’s Testimonial “I have had a great deal of dental work over the past 58 years. Waited several months for dental work at another dental office with a number of service problems. This new dental office, staff and dentist were all amazing. They are very well organized, pleasant, and very experienced. I had all of my top teeth removed and the work was second to none. Very impressed. They understand customer service and were able to meet my tight time lines. They do call, email, and text reminders for your appointments. I can’t say enough about them. Everything was a huge improvement over my previous dental office. All of the staff are very professional and genuinely happy to work there. That speaks volumes of the owner and organized business. So glad to find them in Arnprior.” Conveniently located in the Arnprior Mall, Dr. Neeraj Bansal, Dr. Saloni Bansal, and their wonderful staff members treat patients like they are part of the family. “Our helpful, friendly, and professional team has been paramount to our growth and success. At the end of each visit we educate our patient about what was done at the appointment and what is planned for the future. We believe if our patients are educated in oral health they become more involved and are more likely to return because they want to keep a healthy smile.” Dentistry@Arnprior has a relaxing atmosphere where staff truly care about the well being of patients. “We take pride in our office and all that we offer. It is very rewarding to receive recognition for the great service we provide to Arnprior and surrounding areas.” “One of the greatest things about working in the dental field is meeting new people. A referral is the greatest compliment we can receive.” Offering evening and weekend hours and same day emergency service, Dentistry@Arnprior is a team committed to excellence and will ensure patients are provided with outstanding dental care to improve and maintain oral health. “Thank you so much to the voters who have continued to place their praise and trust in Dentistry@Arnprior. Anderson Automotive takes service to heart

Since 2010, Anderson Automotive has given Arnprior dedicated, professional, reliable service for all makes and models.

“Our main priority is to provide quality, honest service at reasonable prices. We feel our success is based on maintaining those goals,” said Craig and Kristen Anderson.

The renovation allowed us to add a second bay to our building and a third hoist, as well as a brand new office and waiting room area which gives customers a warm, quiet, clean place to wait on their vehicles. We also took the opportunity to enhance the exterior of the building by installing new siding, stone, lighting, new bay doors and new man doors. Because we are in the corridor leading into downtown, and with the revitalization, we felt this was not only a positive for us, but a positive for Daniel St as well.”

“The relationships we’ve built with customers and the quality, honest service we provide keeps customers coming back. Most of our clientele has been from word-ofmouth referrals.”

“It’s very humbling to be selected again for an award! It makes us feel very proud of our accomplishments because we’re in a category with many competitors and bigger, more established shops.”

Anderson Automotive is truly a family business. Craig’s younger brother Ian joined as an apprentice in 2015.

“Without our loyal customers, none of this would be possible. We are truly grateful for the support we have been given by the people of Arnprior and area, and cannot thank them enough!”

That exemplary level of care has resulted in the shop receiving a Diamond Readers’ Choice Award for the Mechanic Shop and Platinum Award for Tires.

Thank you for voting for us!

We are prescription specialists, dedicated to providing the most progressive and highly-skilled services, wrapped with extra tender care. We feel blessed to be able to thrive in the centrally-located, historic downtown. Clancy’s is unique in that we are Arnprior’s only locally-owned, independent pharmacy and we work hard to foster that small-town apothecary feel with a modern twist. Join us to experience how excellence in pharmacy is truly delivered! We ring in 2018 with extended hours and a new accessible entrance to welcome everyone.

To everyone who voted for us, thank you for your support and vote of confidence. We’d also like to thank all our loyal customers for their continued support. The choice to support small retail business is a choice to sustain a healthy retail environment. A small business is the one that will endeavor to get you what you want, even if it’s not on their shelf. It’s the small business whose primary focus is their customers, not their shareholders. It’s the small business whose decision makers live in their community and contribute to it. It’s the small business who will be there for you if you continue to be there for them. To show our appreciation for everyone’s support, please bring in the customer appreciation coupon below for a 15% discount (some restrictions apply - see coupon for details).

Thank you to all who continue to support Clancy’s! We appreciate you! PHARMACY

THANK YOU

is a cut above

Enright Tree Services has been helping nature stay in shape in the Ottawa Valley for more than 30 years. The family-run business provides safe and qualified tree services, including dismantling and complete tree removal, pruning, brushing, chipping and much more. Their dedication to quality service at reasonable prices has earned them a Platinum Readers’ Choice in the Arborist category. “We were very pleased that customers felt we met their needs. We’d like to thank all our customers and people we’ve dealt with,” said Shawnalee Enright. “We give clients more than they expected, and we do a lot of little extras that there is no charge for.” That commitment to exemplary customer service has made Enright first for safe tree management. “Our certified arborists know what they’re doing when it comes to the aesthetics of your shrubs and hedges. We can trim them when they get unruly and can prune them for optimal and controlled growth. Our team of arborists understands the technicality of tree removal, and we do so safely and properly.”

White Lake Marina is making waves in community

Thank you!

Andra and Pete Bettencourt bought White Lake Marina in 2008 and moved their growing family to a new life. After a great deal of learning and a lot of hard work, the outcome has been more than worthwhile. The marina has been honoured with several awards, including their recent Platinum Readers’ Choice Award. “We fell in love with the Valley, Arnprior, White Lake, and our little marina, says Andra. “We’re part of amazing community and our customers are wonderful. We thank each and every one! Pete and Andra also thank Lesa Desarmia and Mike Kashmark, who have grown from staff to good friends over the years.

AND THE

Thank you for supporting us and for your recognition! We look forward to working with you in 2018.

WINNERS ARE…

Buying local... for the health of your community Choosing to purchase and consume local products is a great way of committing yourself wholeheartedly to the community, contributing to its social and economic health as well as to its continuing development. Creating local jobs By buying products in your area, you will contribute to the economic health of local businesses. In this way, these businesses will have the opportunity to maintain their turnover or even increase it. By maintaining or increasing their productivity, they will keep their employees working and may even be able to create new jobs to meet extra demand. Your local purchases, however small they may be, could directly contribute to sustaining high levels of employment in your community. Who knows, it could be

your father, your sister, your son, your best friend or your neighbour who benefits from new jobs created because of your choice to buy local! Encouraging human contact In this age of advanced technologies, where buying on-line is so easy and popular, contact with other human beings is valued much less than before. But this facet of our lives should be of great importance to us all, benefitting not only individuals but society as a whole. Buying products directly from the producer or manufacturer could allow you to develop a very special relationship with your local merchants. A bond of confidence and even friendship could flourish between you. Finally, by contributing to the prosperity

Gabriel Y Leclerc, CFP® Financial Advisor .

of local merchants and entrepreneurs, you will ensure that your community conserves its unique character, its special flavour, and ensure the continuing attraction of your region to visitors.
