Arnprior Regional Health receives $1.7 million from province Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) has just been approved to proceed with much-needed upgrades to the central sterile reprocessing area (CSR). ARH officials learned of the news through a letter from Dr. Eric Hoskins — Minister of Health. The government has approved the project with a total cost of $1,995,600 with the ministry share being up to $1,793,600. “This announcement, along with other previous announcements relating to the building infrastructure at the hospital, brings the ministry’s funding to almost $4 million this year,” said Eric Hanna, president and CEO. He said the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring quality care is provided in rural Ontario communities. Small, integrated rural health corporations such as ARH are models the Ministry of Health is focused upon supporting.
“Every year there are almost 3,000 surgical procedures performed at the hospital site of Arnprior Regional Health. The sterile processing of instruments, devices, and items has a major impact on infection control and patient safety. Devices used in surgical procedures must be sterile and safe when used,” says an ARH press release. “Despite ARH’s cramped physical space and inadequate environmental infrastructure over recent years, CSR staff has been successful in maintaining stringent standards and have been pivotal in achieving our very low surgical site infection rate. The new funding allows staff to work in an environment that is modern and up-to-date. “ Arnprior Regional Health has a dedicated and very knowledgeable team, including more than 14 surgeons who are supported by three

nouncement saying, “Patients who are provided with surgery within their community based hospital allows for more family support which can be an integral part in their recovery.” Recognition of this important investment was also acknowledged by
John Fraser, parliamentary assistant to the Minster of Health and LongTerm Care and Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa South. “I am pleased that the ministry is providing support to the project at the Arnprior Regional Health — Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital site. The team there has been providing exemplary health care services for over 70 years. I know that the central sterilization and reprocessing renovation project will ensure that patients avoid infections and that the doctors, nurses and health professionals are able to quickly access the instrumentation and equipment they need.” Work on the project is expected to last up to 12 months and the next steps will include finalizing the design and cost elements, along with scheduling the construction to avoid disruption to the surgical program.

Arnprior boasts more jobs, business openings in 2016 Madawaska Boulevard was torn down to allow for a MacEwan Gas Station and convenience store this year. Five industrial businesses have also opened this year, creating 22 jobs (nine being new hires). They are: • CCI and CCI balconies • Shades of Colour Wood Working • Snark Coffee Roaster • Madawaska Doors Showroom • Capital Valley Vinyl.
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Town council received a report entitled 2016 Economic Development Update that contained some good news on the jobs and business openings front. Created by the town’s marketing and economic development officer, Lindsay Wilson, and presented at the Jan. 23 regular meeting, the report has become an annual one for Arnprior council. “Economic development strategies do take time and require significant effort, investment and commitment in order to yield results,” Wilson wrote. “In 2016, significant investment occurred in Arnprior’s main commercial areas including the downtown and the Arnprior mall.” She goes so far as to call it “a spike” in investment activity. Even with the heavy construction last year related to the multi-year $12-million downtown revitalization, six new businesses opened in the community core. Kurly’s Hair Studio, M Taylor Beauty Bar, Pho Saigon Express, Keller Williams VIP Realty, Lumbertown Ale House and 2 Grands Piano Bar all opened shop. Two others relocated downtown: Crazy Beautiful and Royal LePage Realty. No businesses closed due to the construction, she added. With the worst of the construction over, town staff has experienced a “significant increase” in inquiries related to commercial space downtown. A new business is expected to open next to the Opportunity Shop in May. It will be called the Vintage Crate and sell antiques, gifts, and home decor. A Sunday outdoor market will also open in the same area at the same time.

Snark coffee roaster opened quietly last September in the Arnprior Industrial Park under the ownership of Kim Berry (former owner of Neat Cafe in Burnstown) and Jeff Lehoux (former federal Liberal candidate). The roaster is not a coffee shop, but sells ethically sourced beans, packaged as environmentally friendly as possible, and sold with 10 per cent of the purchase price to the buyer’s cause. For more, see snarkbean.com or call 1-613-804-6886. The renovated mall means larger locations for Canadian Tire and Mark’s, plus a new Dollarama. There remains one space to fill. The previous Canadian Tire store beside the mall will be demolished in the spring, Wilson wrote, and the corporation’s real estate arm will redevelop it. “At this time tenants of the new
retail spaces are unconfirmed,” Wilson told council. “There will be three commercial pads on site, including a gas bar and drive-thru restaurant.” Among the commercial buildings demolished in the past few months
is the former Ken’s Kitchen, to make way for a municipal parking lot this year. The house between No Frills and Daniel Street was demolished to make the land more appealing to developers. The former Fraser’s Tire on
Another industrial business might relocate to Arnprior, Wilson said, to allow for an expansion and addition of 13 jobs. Since Wilson was hired in 2013, the estimated number of net new businesses is 47. The estimated number of net new employees is 194. Efforts to have consumers shop locally also appears to be working. The Live, Love, Local card program will continue this year. Last year 3,202 cards were submitted to the monthly draw. That is equivalent to 32,020 local purchases. “Participation in this program has doubled since last year in which 1,566 cards were submitted in 2015,” Wilson wrote. “A Shop Local Saturday … will be held on April 29. Mayor and staff will visit participating local businesses and post a tweet with a photo and business details on Twitter.” Participants will receive double stamps on their Live, Love, Local cards on that day. It may become an annual event.

Two men are facing a slew of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, following an investigation by the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). She did however confirm that it was a dog that was involved in the incident. “At this time we don’t know the status of the animal and because of the seriousness of the case a lot will come out at court, the status of the dog will come out at court, said Atkinson. Arnprior-area man fined $750 for unlawful moose hunt An Arnprior-area man has been fined $750 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Kerry Casselman pleaded guilty and was fined $750 for unlawfully hunting a bull moose without a valid licence, and has been ordered to retake the hunter safety course. Court heard that on October 17, 2016, Casselman was hunting for calf moose near Chalk River. It was determined that Casselman observed two moose on the opening morning of rifle moose season and shot what he thought was a calf moose. An investigation revealed that Casselman had, in fact, shot a bull moose. The moose was forfeited to the Crown. Justice of the Peace Barry Moran heard the
case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on Jan. 23. The ministry reminds hunters that a valid hunting licence is required to hunt wild game and that the appropriate seal must be attached to an animal immediately after it is harvested. Horton receives grant funding for Fraser Road with support of McNab/Braeside TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It's the neighbourly way of doing things. Horton Township applied to the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, with the support of McNab/Braeside Township, and was successful in receiving a major grant. The Fraser Road project is a threeway partnership with the federal government, Horton and McNab/Braeside. The grant funding is broken down three ways: Horton has received $90,482 from the grant. Horton is contributing $24,455 from development charges and $66,299 from reserves and McNab/Braeside is contributing $90,482. The construction will see upgrades done on a 1.5km stretch of Fraser Road; the centre line of the road is the dividing line between the two townships. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was on hand to mark the partnership on Jan. 19 at the intersection of Fraser and Burnstown Roads. Gallant was pleased that the Canada 150 program was continuing. "I can see no other municipalities quite so deserving and needy as these two municipalities - because of the lower tax base, this is a real help to
lant. Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury was extremely pleased they were approved for the grant. "I'm especially pleased we are in partnership with our neighbour McNab/ Braeside and Mayor (Tom) Peckett and his council, they gave us great support when doing the application," said Kingsbury. "I'm also happy the federal government is involved as our MP stated you can't do it on your own anymore. You need help from one level of government or another and when you have a neighbouring municipality there with you it makes it that much easier." Kingsbury thinks this is a very important road. "It connects to Hurds Lake, which is a built-up area for Greater Madawaska so it's very important," said Kingsbury. Kingsbury also went on to praise the hard work of staff and everyone who worked on the grant appli-
to all of our staff for their hard work they did to achieve this," said Kingsbury. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett also agreed the key is helping each other. "When communities help each other things go much smoother and to be able to work with our neighbours in Horton and Mayor Kingsbury and staff," said Peckett. "To see this road repaired for citizens of both townships, for me it is the way to go in the future, we need to have more co-operation and more working together between all of the municipalities. "It's in rough shape right now, this is a boundary road and maintenance can't keep up to it now, so that where we come together for a project like this," said Ryan Frew, director of public works for McNab/Braeside. PC leader Patrick Brown confronted by social conservatives in Ottawa DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown was primed to lambaste Liberal energy policies at a Stittsville rally on Sunday afternoon, but ended up fending off several social conservatives. The Glen pub’s meeting room was packed and overflowed out the door to hear from host and Carleton candidate Goldie Ghamari and several others. Her big-tent message of party diversity in beliefs and viewpoints that will lead to a majority win in the next election was politely received by most. She slammed the federal Liberals as embracing less important differences like gender and ethnicity. “We have diversity in our ideology, and that’s what is important,” said Ghamari, an international trade lawyer. She was interrupted several times, notably by a self-described “angry white man” sporting a Make Ontario Great Again hat. Guy Annable shouted pro social conservative remarks while filming the meeting. Afterward he said the ball cap, which resembles Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again hats, doesn’t mean he agrees with the U.S. president’s tactics, but that a mainstream approach to politics is not working for many. “Somebody’s got to keep the conservative in this party,” Annable told the crowd. Others had a similar message for Brown, including Jay Tysick, who was denied a shot at the Carleton nomination by the party. He and several others ripped up their party membership cards at the meeting. Another screamed “You don’t accept social conservatives” at Brown when it comes to the province’s sexual-education program. Yet another demanded equal treatment for Quebec and Ontario workers. Many construction, trucking, and nursing jobs in Ottawa are done by Gatineau workers, was the claim. MEMBERSHIP TOPS 100,000
Brown insisted there is plenty of room in the party, saying at the current pace membership numbers will top the 100,000 high set during the 1990s. “In November and December, 44,000 new members joined the party,” Brown said. “We are on the right track. We’ve been very good at grasping defeat from the jaws of victory: we are not going to do that again.” He encouraged everyone to take an active role in the party, to cite policy changes that would further their causes and to participate in the upcoming convention. Brown appeared more confident

The Liberals are about finding revenue sources, not solutions to environmental challenges, he said. “This is who they are. Don’t believe their shell games,” he said. He was pushed to commit to cancelling the carbon tax should the PCs form the next government. Brown turned to Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren to ask how long it would take. “About 10 minutes,” MacLaren shouted, to applause. Brown also talked about the Hydro One sell off, and how its CEO should be paid in line with Canadian counterparts. “They never ran on a hydro fire sale, Guy Annable’s Make Ontario but they are broke,” he said. “When I Great Again hat doesn’t mean he asked (Premier) Kathleen Wynne why supports everything U.S. Presithe Hydro One CEO is paid $4 million dent Donald Trump stand for, he dollars; how can you justify that? Stand Up Against Violence
You have only to skim the pages of this newspaper to note that domestic violence continues to be an issue for many in the Ottawa Valley. There are the recent charges laid against two men in a McNab/Braeside conspiracy to commit murder case, the ongoing court case against Basil Borutski, who allegedly killed three women in the Wilno area in 2015 and numerous domestic violence investigations launched each week by our local Ontario Provincial Police detachment. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation (CWF), all Canadians pay a steep price for violence against women. “It’s estimated that each year, Canadians collectively spend $7.4 billion to deal with the aftermath of spousal violence alone, according to the Department of Justice. This figure includes immediate costs, such as emergency room visits and related costs, such as loss of income. It also includes tangible costs such as funerals, and intangible costs such as pain and suffering,” says CWF. The statistics are startling: • Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16; • 67 per cent of Canadians say they have personally known at least one woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse; • Approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Out of the 83 police-reported intimate partner homicides in 2014, 67 of the victims - more than 80 per cent - were women; • On any given night in Canada, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home. There are a number of local resources to help women and families dealing with domestic violence. Among those is Bernadette McCann House (BMH), which is encouraging the public to get involved in the Stand Up Against Violence photo campaign challenge. “Bernadette McCann House is challenging others to ‘Stand Up Against Violence’ by making their own signs, taking a picture to capture a selfie and forward it to the agency,” says BMH volunteer/public education co-ordinator Erin Norris. More than 360 groups, businesses and individuals have contributed to the campaign. This past weekend close to 20 people gathered in Burnstown to lend their voices and image to the fight against domestic violence. BMH would like to see 1,000 photographs by the close of the campaign. “If you believe violence is not acceptable in our community, please stand up.” Forward your photos to norrise@ wsssbmn.org. Hydro ‘rebates’ not what they seem: landowners association To the editor:
This month, when I received my electricity bill there was a ‘propaganda sheet’ with it explaining the Hydro ‘rebates’ I would be receiving because I live in a rural area. So I decided to look into this amazing effort by government and Hydro. This insert states everyone is to receive an eight per cent HST rebate. And then below that was the ‘regulatory charges…increasing.’ Now wait a minute, in actuality, a rural residential customer won’t be saving the eight per cent because it’s been added to the regulatory line.

Tricky isn’t it. They give you the eight per cent HST and then in the next breath add eight per cent onto the regulatory charges. And what are these regulatory charges? That’s another trick. On the Hydro website it says it “includes the cost of services required to operate the electricity system and run the wholesale market,” not what the propaganda says. It states that the ‘regulatory charge’ is “to fund the rural…rate protection program.” But what does the ‘wholesale market’ have to do with rural rates? This is for the global adjustment charges. And what are the ‘global adjust-
ment charges?’ It’s to cover the “costs for providing generating capacity and conservation and demand management programs across the province. This includes: non-utility generator contracts, regulated nuclear generation, Renewable Energy Standard Offer Programs, Feed-In Tariff programs (Samsung/Korea), Independent Electricity System Operators contract adjustments and other programs.” What they didn’t tell you is we also have the “Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation” (OEFC). The OEFC is one of five entities established by the Electricity Act, as part of the restructuring of the former

Ontario Hydro which was restructured into OPG, Hydro One, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the Electrical Safety Authority and OEFC. What happened to just Hydro One and OPG? So what we are paying for? More bureaucracies and government cronies. If you look at the board of directors most of them are deputy ministers. Question – why would we need Denise Dwyer, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education on a board for electricity? Just sayin’ – could somebody be getting their pocket’s lined at our expense? And don’t forget about the carbon tax that’s going to be on everything? This is your New Demo-Progressive Con-Liberal party working for you. American Crows share many traits with Common Ravens, their larger cousins, such as being scavengers in winter.
Ravens and crows have much in common Of all local birds, common ravens and American crows are reputedly among the smartest. Both live here year-round and scavenge, especially in winter. However, when I started birdwatching nearly sixty years ago, American crows were common in summer but few, if any, stayed here for the winter. And their close relatives, common ravens, were never present in summer and only visited on rare occasions in winter. They were rare because, being scavengers, they were victimized when strychnine poisoning was instituted across Ontario in a misguided effort to kill off wolves. The Arnprior Christmas Bird Count (1913 - 1931) and the Pakenham CBC, which ran from 1925 to the current year with its name changing in 1970 to the current Pakenham-Arnprior, documented major changes in the winter status of both species. Charles Macnamara never saw even a single raven or a crow on his Christmas Day bird censuses. It was not until 1960 that the first crows (10 in total) were tallied on the Pakenham Counts. And common ravens didn’t make an appearance on that count until 1978! Then things began to change. Both species were encountered with some regularity and in increasing numbers. On the 1982 Pakenham-Arnprior count, 366
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way crows and 81 ravens were recorded. On the 2012 CBC, 407 crows and 212 ravens were tallied. Crows and ravens had become established winter residents. And the summer status changed, too. Ravens now nest all through our area, placing their nests on hydro pylons, silo ladders and rooftop ledges of tall buildings, as well as on traditional sites such as cliffs. And they nest early. Right now, pairs are performing choreographed courtship flights high up in the sky. American crows haven’t yet started pairing up. Currently, they still stream across the sky at day’s end to their overnight roosts. Their largest roosts are right in Ottawa, and the sight of hundreds of those large birds black-
ening the trees, reminiscent of a scene in the Hitchcock classic The Birds, has alarmed more than one city resident. Recently, I’ve fielded four media interviews concerning the phenomenon known as communal roosting. Communal roosts in cities occur only in winter and are a relatively recent phenomenon. One theory as to why crows gather at night concerns food. At dawn, individuals that previously found good feeding sites (such as fields with standing corn) are the first to leave the roost. Crows less successful in finding food follow them, a behaviour known as “information transfer.” Cities in winter are especially attractive to crows because they are warmer than nearby forests because of the warm air released by buildings, cars, and people (especially politicians), and it is safer at night because there are fewer predators around that might seek crows as midnight snacks. In winter, ravens gather in large numbers when large corpses, such as coyote-killed deer, are found. Groups of juveniles seek out such meals, and when they find one, they scream vociferously to attract more of their age group. During these large social gatherings, the youngsters sort out dominance hierarchies and begin pairing up. Which makes a large carcass
nothing less than a singles bar for these fascinating birds!

Tim Pilch would read obituaries in his newspaper each week and wonder how much more there must be to the lives listed. The stories that are now lost, the family history, the values held by a fading generation: gone. He set his mind to not allowing that to happen in his family. A dishwasher and line cook at the Hangar Restaurant in the Antrim Truck Stop, Pilch didn’t think his life would include authoring a book. But then came along Remember the Sunny Days, Sonny Jim. After his 88-year-old mother Maise was released from Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital following a bout of pneumonia, she began to talk about her war experiences. It came out of nowhere that year, 2006. She never talked about surviving the London Blitz. Nor about meeting the Canadian paratrooper who would turn her into a war bride. It came as a pleasant surprise to Pilch, who took to recording their conversations. His father, George, was a product of the Great Depression. Hockey heaven in Braeside this Junior fish derby Feb. 4 in Cobden weekend at winter carnival It’s Braeside’s turn on the winter carnival circuit as the village hosts its annual event this Saturday, Feb. 4. “After the very popular all-you-can-eat shanty breakfast, the RA Centre in Braeside will turn into a hockey haven upstairs in the afternoon during the annual winter carnival this year as Canada’s game has taken over the carnival,” says an event press release. “Arnprior McNab/ Braeside archivists will be on hand to share their memories dating back to the early days of the region which will include early hockey photos of the bygone era.” Along with that theme, the Renfrew NHA/ NHL Birthplace Museum will have a display to share with attendees as well. The Arnprior Packers will be holding an open outdoor skate at 2 p.m., which will give the public a chance to come and check out one of the hottest junior hockey teams in Eastern Ontario. “Graciously, the Packers are providing shirts featuring Darryl Meek’s number 2, which will be sold off and all proceeds going to Mr. Meek,” says the press release. Speaking of shirts, the hockey gurus will be bringing some NHL jerseys with them, some for display, some for sale and by filling in a ballot, one can win an Ottawa Sens jersey autographed by the entire team. All you have to do is show up. The chance to skate with the Packers after their practice around 3 p.m. will also occur as
the public can take to the ice for free skating. “Other displays that will be on location that day upstairs is a card collector who focuses on Boston Bruins memorabilia, a mask maker with an extensive collection of equipment and interesting artifacts as well as knee hockey and table hockey areas,” says the release. “There’s lots to see and do for everybody. We will be giving away $100 cash to the winner of the MacEwen Homes shootout and also giving away $25, compliments of East Side Marios, to the winner of chuck-a-puck. It’ll be a big day in Braeside, so stop over, admission is free and everybody’s welcome. “The Township of McNab/Braeside is extremely pleased to be collaborating with the Arnprior Packers Hockey Club the Arnprior McNab/Braeside Archives, as well as the NHL/ NHA Hockey Birthplace Museum in Renfrew to offer ‘Home Hardware Hockey Haven’ as part of the annual Braeside Winter Carnival,” say officials. Admission to the event is free although charitable donations are accepted for the very popular all-you-can-eat shanty breakfast, which kicks off at 7 a.m. An entry fee is required to participate in the $100 McEwen Homes Shoot-out and the $25 East-Side Mario’s chuck-a-puck. Complete details are available at mcnabbraeside.com . For further info, please contact Geoff Patterson, recreation director at 613-623-5756 x 226.

Arnprior School of Dance’s Art Tree The Art Tree Project is a community event celebrating Canada 150. The newspaper is featuring a number of trees that have already produced and to view the trees in person visit one of 12 local shows. If you would like more information on how to create your own tree go to your www.arttreeproject.ca . The Arnprior School of Dance is registered in the community group section and their tree was created by: Kendra Dyer, Tessa Roberts, Julia McCuaig, In the Garden studio. sic, and energetic feet. Students range from enthusiastic toddlers, to peppy teens, and seasoned adults. Skilled instructors teach many styles and inspire the younger
generations through their lessons. Some of these styles include ballet, jazz, tap, hiphop, musical theatre, acro, lyrical, contemporary, creative dance, adult ballroom, etc. Recreational students prepare and anticipate for the annual spring recital. Throughout the year they learn and improve upon many skills and routines, leading up to the exciting day in May. Competitive dancers use foundation skills learned in recreational dance and build upon them in an artistic way. They strive to compete and win across the province. They are given the opportunity to shine on stage and stand out amongst other studios. The beginning of May is an
exciting time of year, as everything comes to a close. The dancers display a full year’s hard work and fun for family, friends, and community. Shows are often sold out quickly due to much interest and support for the teams. Description: Several students of the Arnprior School of Dance assisted in drawing and painting the dancers and leaves. The goal was to choose a variety of dance genres and give the overall effect of fluid movement through the loose drawing style and washes of coloured ink. The rhythmic music bars with the words of dance genres also emphasizes movement and how interwoven music is with dance. All of the last names of students and instructors for the 2016/17 year are written in the leaves.

Todd Nicholson named chef de mission for 2018 Paralympic Games BRIER DODGE brier.dodge@metroland.com
Todd Nicholson has taken on almost every role he possibly could in the sledge hockey world. Olympian, gold medalist, team captain, public speaker, advocate, Paralympic committee athlete’s council chair, flag bearer, Own the Podium representative. And now he has one more to add: chef de mission. Dunrobin’s Nicholson will officially serve as Canada’s chef de mission for the 2018 Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The chef de mission job is to provide overall leadership to the team, and serve as a mentor to athletes. “When I applied for the position, it was like I felt like I was already doing it. I didn’t need a title for anything,” Nicholson said. “But to have the opportunity to officially be able to do this, it’s a great honour and it’s definitely a highlight of my career.” Paralympic gold medal swimmer Aurélie Rivard, who acted as MC at the Jan. 24 announcement at the Jim Durrell Recreation Complex, said in the past, the chef de mission has been her rock and person to lean on who
she knew had experienced the pressures of a Paralympic games. “The chef de mission role is very important for the team,” Rivard said. “It’s the person that will be there to inspire us, to guide us, to mentor us, to encourage us on our way to success.” Nicholson is certainly experienced on the international stage as an athlete and an advocate for Paralympic athletes. He competed at five Paralympic Games, from his first Games in 1994 where he said it was up to him and the West Carleton community to raise funds for him to go and compete, until 2010, when he no longer had to explain what sledge hockey was at every one of his speeches. He was team captain for 15 of those years – preparing him for the chef de mission role. “It means a lot to me,” he said, of being selected. “As somebody who represented Canada on the international stage for as many years as I did, I know what it takes in order to get to that level. I remember my first Games in ’94. I remember those Games like they were yesterday. It’s one of those things you will never forget.” Nicholson said he wouldn’t have
been able to take on the position, as well as past and current positions he’s held – such as International Paralympic Committee athlete representative to the International Olympic Committee – without the support from his family, but also his co-workers at Canada Border Services Agency who have been flexible with him. Several of his co-workers, as well as his family, attended the announcement. “If you look around the international boards, there are a lot of Canadians who are giving back to sport in some way, shape, or form,” he said. “And for me, this is another way to do that.” He said Canada’s performance goals for Pyeongchang haven’t been set out yet, but they plan to send a full team in all five sports in the Winter Paralympic Games: wheelchair curling, para ice hockey, para alpine skiing, para snowboarding, and para Nordic skiing. Now his job is to rally support for the Paralympic athletes in the year lead up to the games. “We’re not asking for your pity,” said Nicholson, who was paralyzed in a car accident. “We’re asking for your support.”
Brier Dodge/Metroland
After Todd Nicholson, second from right, was named as the chef de mission for the 2018 Paralympic Games, he joined wife Emily Glossop, west Ottawa’s Ben Delaney, second from left, and Stittsville-native Tyrone Henry on the ice. Both Delaney and Henry are members of the national sledge hockey team and hope to compete in the 2018 Games. Glossop, not normally a sledge hockey player, joined Nicholson on the ice at the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre.

In Loving Memory of
Jim Lyons
In loving memory of a dear father, son, grandfather and brother who left us on February 1st 2014. A million times we needed you, A million times we cried, If love alone would have saved you, You would have never died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can ever fill. A light from our household is gone, A voice from our love is stilled, A place in our vacant home, Which never can be filled. Some may think you are forgotten, Though on earth you are no more, But in our memory you are with us, As you always were before. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Your precious memories are for keepsakes, with which we never part, God has you safely in his keeping, But we have you forever in our hearts. Love always and forever Mom, Lauren, Ryan, James, Crystal, Trevor, Cierra, Kolby, Connor, Gabe and family.

BY JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
Decision time is here for the longproposed Heritage Park in Carp. It's time to decide if the West Carleton Heritage Park Association should go ahead and purchase the 14 acre site on Langstaff Drive between the West Carleton Family Health Centre and the Huntley Curling Club. And if the decision is negative, then funds collected from the public as donations will have to be returned and funds being held by the city will have to be released for other purposes. A decision about this Heritage Park proposal will be made, one way or the other, at a meeting this coming TuesBurns day, Feb.Robbie 7 at 7:30 p.m. day at thewas Agriculmarked 25fairgrounds. at Island Evtural Hall aton theJan. but acknowledges that the time to act or abandon the idea is now approaching not only the 11th hour, but the 11th hour, 59 minute mark. The site is zoned and could accommodate over 200 housing units if developed. If it is not purchase for the proposed Heritage Park, the site will end up with houses on it. The Carp Community Design Plan makes reference to the community's desire to retain its agricultural roots, with one idea being to create a Heritage Park which could accommodate a museum within a complex of older buildings brought to the site from other parts of West Carleton.
You can bring the joy of Valentines to those who have served to defend Canada. You can do this by participating in the Valentines for Veterans initiative now underway at the Diefenbunker in Carp. Families are invited to visit the Diefenbunker and help make handmade Valentines for those who have served the country in the armed forces. The Diefenbunker has partnered with The Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre to create these Valentines tokens of affection for its residents. These specially created Valentines will show the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre veterans how much love and respect there is for their service to the country. You will have an opportunity to participate in the making of these handmade Valentines this coming Saturday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Diefenbunker.
ROUTES AVAILABLE!!!
There is no additional cost to participate in this Valentines for Veterans craft session as it is included in the cost of admission to the facility. (Adults $14, Seniors $13, Students $10 and Youth (6-18) $8 — HST must be added to these rates). Children aged 5 and under are admitted free. And speaking of the Diefenbunker and valentines, another valentines-themed event at the Diefenbunker will be the “Atomic Love — Touring Wine and Cheese” event happening on Tuesday, Feb. 14 (Valentine’s Day) at 6:30 p.m. In this event, participants will explore the Diefenbunker on a guided tour with wine and cheese. While touring, participants will stop at different locations to sample cheeses and wine pairings. It all happens between 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Valentines Day — Tuesday, Feb. 14. Cost is $195 per couple or $100 per person. Tickets are available from Eventbrite.ca. A charitable tax receipt is available upon request Those participating are urged to wear comfortable footwear as the Diefenbunker is 100,000 square feet in size.

February is Pet Dental Health Month Did you know that about 80 per cent of pets have dental disease by the time they are three years old? Even with those statistics, dental health is often overlooked by pet owners. This is unfortunate because it has a large impact on an animal’s overall welfare and health, especially in old age. Without hands, pets rely on their mouths for playing as well as eating. Dental disease to a pet is similar to dental disease in people. The consequences go far beyond the immediate pain and discomfort. Like in people, dental disease has also been linked to heart disease and diabetes in pets. By preventing dental disease, we can keep our pets happier and healthier as they age and prevent tooth loss when they are older. Gingivitis and dental disease usually start with a buildup of plaque that calcifies into tartar and binds tightly to the tooth. From there, the gums and bone around the tooth begins to regress and root abscesses form once the tooth becomes loose. In other cases, particularly in dogs, chewing on hard things such as bones, rocks, kennel bars and hooves can lead to tooth fractures. Besides being painful, if the pulp is exposed, bacteria can enter it and tooth root abscesses can form. If a tooth root abscess is in the lower jaw, it can weaken the bone to the point that it fractures. In some cases, dental
Pet Talk
IAN STUPP disease is discovered only when the pet breaks its jaw. Indicators of dental disease include bad breath, tartar buildup on teeth, chewing on one side of the mouth, not playing as much with chew toys, pain when a tooth is touched, one tooth with much more tartar buildup and/or discolouration, nasal discharge — usually from one nostril only and a swollen cheek or jaw. Many pet owners are not aware that it is as bad as it really is. Most are surprised when they are shown their pet’s teeth during an exam because their pet is still eating and playing. Animals, even domesticated pets, are very good at hiding pain. What can a pet owner do? The first step is ensuring your pets get annual exams and that their teeth are looked at during the exam. Your veterinarian can then recommend cleanings as needed.
How to brush your dog’s teeth? Start by rubbing and handling the outside of your dog’s muzzle with your fingers. Then, insert your fingers into the dog’s mouth and rub along the outside of the teeth. After a few days, when your dog is used to this, introduce some veterinary approved toothpaste which comes in flavours like chicken or beef. Let the dog lick the toothpaste off your fingers, then gently insert your fingers with the paste into his mouth. After a few days of practice, apply the toothpaste to a special finger brush or a regular toothbrush for pets. Brush using a circular motion. The whole brushing procedure should only take about 30 seconds. Usually only the outside of a dog’s teeth can be brushed. Not many dogs will open wide enough for you to brush the inside of the tooth’s surface. Be careful not to brush young puppy’s teeth too roughly during teething, which can cause gum pain or bleeding. Reward your dog with a healthy treat afterwards to ensure brushing is regarded as an enjoyable exercise. Ian owns and operates Wags and Whiskers Pet Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. N. Mary chooses household objects to carefully examine “She’s at it again, Ma,” Emerson said, jabbing a finger in my general direction. I was only faintly aware of his speaking. I was deep in thought to pay much attention. Audrey was too busy to go through Eaton’s Catalogue with me, I had put my dolls to bed, and the only light was coming from the one coal-oil lamp in the middle of the kitchen table. It was the perfect time for me to do what I always turned to when I was left to amuse myself after supper and before bedtime. I would put a chair in the middle of the kitchen, and pick out something in the room that interested me, and spend the evening going over in detail what that piece of furniture meant to us, and what its purpose was. As simple as it was, I could spend hours at this meaningless pastime, which more than once caused my brother Emerson to say it all proved that I was just a ‘bubble off plumb’. That night I settled on the white

cupboard for the last. Above the porcelain was a door made completely of narrow slats of wood. Mother could pull this door up and down, and when it was up, it completely vanished into goodness knows where. I could never figure out where it went to, and I really didn’t want to know. I wanted it to remain a mystery, so that on the evening when I chose the cupboard to visit, there would always be something about it yet to learn. Emerson once asked Mother what in heavens name I found interesting about simply sitting and looking at the pieces of furniture that filled our kitchen, and he would tease me and say I had a screw loose whatever that meant. And Mother would tell him to leave me alone, that one day I might keep those memories deep in my mind, and I might even write about them. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Here Mother pounded down bread and rolled out pastry, and each knife mark, I thought, showed how very important was this addition to the white cupboard. A long drawer was under this board, and here there was lots of space for our mismatched silver wear. And as I sat there in the middle of the kitchen floor, I could picture the forks with a four leaf clover etched in each handle. And I thought how rich we were indeed to have such fine forks to eat from! Under all of this were two more doors. Apart from the time my young cousin Terry once crawled in and hid for hours while we frantically scoured the farm looking for him, this space was kept for roast pans, cookie sheets and muffin tins. That night, I saved the best of the
