Grove needs 96 care beds

Continued from page 4

When Metroland Media contacted the ministry in November, no one would acknowledge Arnprior’s situation. A spokesperson talked in generalities about challenges faced in Eastern Ontario. The goal is for 96 beds, Hanna said. The private sector said that would make it financially viable, and bring The Grove closer to the provincial average. But ARH can’t do it on its own. It needs people in town to join into the postcard campaign. Area MPP John Yakabuski will bring them to the legislature at Queen’s Park. There are other opportunities to advocate on The Grove’s behalf. Mayor David Reid called it the most important issue facing Arnprior and surrounding areas. He pledged the municipality’s support. “We will do all we can to advocate on behalf of The Grove,” he said. “There is no more important issue.” Hanna spoke with incredulity on this topic. He told the crowd about being at ARH for eight years; in health-care education for 31 years; about the nine months it took to get a cancer centre for Queensway Carleton Hospital; and about the 18 months he has worked on this Grove problem. “And we are not very far along,” Hanna said. “It’s a challenge I have not experienced before.”

Please Complete Your Survey—We’re Listening Most of us are familiar with taking surveys. We complete them after using a service, after online shopping, and from all levels of the government. Survey responses allow for improvements, flag issues, and prevent potential issues. Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) regularly surveys patients who return home following a hospital stay or who used the emergency department. A portion of discharged patients will receive a survey within a few weeks. The emergency department survey asks patients the following types of questions: How long did you wait to see a doctor; what level of confidence/trust did you have in the emergency department nurse; were you treated with dignity and respect, and (if applicable) questions concerning pain management. Once a patient completes their survey it is mailed to the survey company. The survey company compiles the results and sends a report to ARH. This report is reviewed by the emergency department, the inpatient unit, the medical advisory committee, senior management, patient and family advisory council (PFAC) and at the Board of Directors. This gives ARH, based on patient feedback, a clear picture of what is working well, what isn’t and where improvements are needed. Previous surveys flagged that patients in the emergence department had a longer length of stay due to waiting for test results. Now certain tests can be authorized by the triage nurse so that by the time the patient sees the doctor the test results are already available, thereby reducing the length of time spent in emergency. White boards in the emergency department also list wait times for blood work and Xray results. We encourage everyone who receives a survey to take 5 – 10 minutes to fill it out. Your feedback is valuable and continuously helps us improve. We are committed to providing exemplary care in all areas at Arnprior Regional Health.

Explore the history of the Valley through series ANDY KALNINS

The Ottawa Valley may be home to many, but how many residents and visitors really know the Valley? Know that this area is older than North American basal geology? Know that the forest here in 1500 was unique in North America? Know how the Algonquin were able to live and flourish? The natural and human history of our backyard is as unique, exciting, and interesting as any on this planet. The Galilee Centre is very excited to have local historian and author Terry Currie present a series of six Lunch and Learn Seminars on the Valley many call home, beginning on Tuesday, March 21. OPINION

Connected to your community

The future of our media

If you are reading this, then you should be interested in the recently released report commissioned by the federal government dealing with ways to address the current upheaval in Canada’s media. The report, authored by respected Canadian journalist Edward Greenspon on behalf of the public policy forum think-tank, contains 12 recommendations meant to strengthen the Canadian journalism landscape and ensure that it can continue to provide the scope and depth of reporting that Canadians have come to expect from their media. This report is particularly relevant with regard to Canada’s print media, which is being faced with shrinking ad and subscription revenues and job cuts. The report sees this as a threat to our democracy. After all, if we lack the information to know what is going on, there will be no informed electorate and our democracy will not function as it should, particularly with the advent of fake news or so-called alternative facts. Another scenario that is equally worrying, though, is the role of the media and more particularly community newspapers in the creation and promotion of “community.” Part of being a community is knowing what is going on locally, is knowing who are your neighbours, is taking pride in being part of that defined space that is known as “your community.” Indeed, Canada can be viewed as a vast community of communities with common values and ideals. And what is a significant feature of a local community? Yes, that’s right – you are holding it in your hands right now. The community newspaper. A robust community newspaper industry is one way of protecting and growing our local communities. Vibrant communities are, we believe, just as vital to the future of our society as is a robust democracy. Communities are the stage on which people primarily come together. That’s why all Canadians must take seriously proposals to strengthen our journalism vehicles in this country, including community newspapers. A media in crisis endangers both our democracy and our communities. With two such pillars of our society both being under threat from pressures on the media these days, taking steps to assist the media in meeting these current challenges should be of interest to all Canadians.

Madness, hatred not limited to the U.S. To the editor:

Since the U.S. election, I’m sure most Canadians have been feeling many of the same emotions as I have: dread, anxiety, discouragement, depression, a sense of helplessness and paralysis because we feel there isn’t much we can do about the madness and hatred “down there.” Recently, news came of the mass-shooting at the mosque in Quebec City. We can all forget the smug notion that madness and hatred just occur “down there.” Since he was inaugurated, Donald Trump and his radical colleagues have begun to roll out their agenda of racial hatred and contempt for human rights and the rule of law. None of us can afford a false sense of security. Their agenda threatens all of us. We all depend on the rule of law. Targeting racial minorities does not make us safer. It increases the risk of terrorism and violence. I don’t pretend to know what ordinary Canadians can and should do in response. Some things that occur to me, however, are fairly straightforward. None of them are

easy. All Canadians have a moral obligation to speak out against bullying and racial hatred, wherever we see them. We need to condemn bullying, wisecracks, and abuse of power, wherever these evils manifest themselves in our communities. We need to tell our political leaders that we oppose the Trump agenda and we want them to do so clearly, with no weasel words. The issues are terribly clear. As Canadians, we believe in the moral obligation to love our neighbours, help one another, and work as partners with people from around the world. Building walls, going it alone, and condemning millions of refugees - the world’s poorest people, made homeless by war, terrorism and climate change - to poverty, deprivation and homelessness is not what our Canada is about.

Well, if this sounds good to you, join Emmanuel Anglican Church at the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Come out for an evening with the family and enjoy the happy atmosphere while you eat. contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats, and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi gras. The word “Shrove” also means to absolve; a ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. Christians mark World Day of Prayer March 3 ‘Am I Being Unfair to You?’ Before the World Wide Web, there was the World Day of Prayer, an international event that has been connecting people in a meaningful way for almost a century. Despite being planned years in advance, World Day of Prayer services have a remarkable record for anticipating major events, like the refugee crisis (France 2013), the Arab Spring (Egypt 2014) and the winding down of the U.S. embargo against Cuba (Cuba 2016). The secret to this depth and insight is the women who plan and write each World Day of Prayer service. Too often, women have the most intimate experiences of armed conflict, violence, social injustice, and human rights violations. What might Canadians learn from women of the Philippines, a country on the front lines of climate change, foreign mining and resources interests, a regional insurgency and social upheaval due to migration, who wrote the World Day of Prayer 2017? How will we answer the question, “Am I being unfair to you?” On March 3, Christians in more than 170

countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada will gather to learn about, pray, and celebrate in solidarity with the women of The Philippines through the World Day of Prayer. Please join us and invite your friends and family to attend the World Day of Prayer 2017. Two local World Day of Prayer Services will be held this year: • In Arnprior at St. John Chrysostom Parish, 295 Albert St. on Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. For more information on the Arnprior service contact Connie Townley-Emery at 613-6235135. • In Renfrew the service will be held at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church, 291 Plaunt St. South on March 3 at 2 p.m. For more information on Renfrew’s service, contact Marg McLeish at 613-433-9913. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women’s InterChurch Council of Canada. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920. This event became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922, and Christians around the world began celebrating this event on the first Friday of March.

On this occasion maybe Mary was a little spoiled My brother Emerson was fond of saying I was spoiled rotten. I said that was plain nonsense. Didn’t I have chores to do like everyone else? Wasn’t I responsible for keeping the wood box filled, and the water pan under the icebox emptied? Now, I admit I was allowed a boiled egg and toast when everyone else was eating liver or blood pudding. But that was because I threw up once, right at the table, when I was told I had to eat everything on my plate, and that included a piece of fried blood pudding! Well, Emerson had plenty to say about my being spoiled the day a parcel came in the mail addressed to me, coming all the way from Aunt Lizzie in Regina. There it was when I got home from school, sitting on the bake table at the back door. I tore into it even before I took off my coat!

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

And right before my eyes was a pair of galoshes with black fur going down the front and circling around the back. I broke into tears of sheer joy and clutched them to my chest. How did Aunt Lizzie know I dreamed of a pair of real galoshes? And then I remembered when I printed my thankyou letter to her for the fur muff she sent me for Christmas, and I said I hoped one day I would have a pair of fur-trimmed galoshes to match! Bad Marguirite had white ones,

RE/MAX HALLMARK REALTY LTD., BROKERAGE

with white fur, if you can imagine! The only pair at the Northcote School. But I never once dreamed of owning anything so elegant, and here right before me were fur trimmed galoshes...to replace the rubber ones with buckles my sister Audrey had worn before me. I was still holding them when my brothers and father came in from chores for their supper. Emerson wondered if there was anything else in the parcel… maybe Aunt Lizzie had included a small gift for everyone. I assured him the only thing in the parcel was what I was holding in my hands. “Spoiled rotten,” he said under his breath. I even took them to the supper table! Holding them on my lap, I could hardly eat, I was so excited. That night, after the kitchen had been redded up, and the oilcloth on the table wiped clean, everyone settled

down to their usual evening activities. But I was too excited to get out my jacks, or look through Eaton’s catalogue. All I wanted to do was sit with the spanking new galoshes in front of me on the table... stroking the fur, and tying and untying the laces. I had never had lace ties with shiny ends on them before! What luxury, I thought. They sat right beside my bed that night. I didn’t trust Emerson not to do them harm when I was asleep. The next morning, as we were getting ready for school, I sat down on the bench by the back door, ready to put on the new galoshes. That’s when Mother said they were not for school...they were to be worn on Sundays for church, or special occasions. I couldn’t believe my ears! Brand new fur-trimmed galoshes and I

wasn’t allowed to wear them!!! I begged and I pleaded, but Mother wasn’t to be swayed. “Too good to plow through the snow all the way to school...they’d be ruined,” she said. Back on went the old rubbers with the steel clasps. When I got to school, the first thing I did was announce to everyone within earshot what my rich aunt from Regina had sent me. My friends Joyce and Velma were as pleased as I was. But bad Marguirite’s only comment, which cut me to the bone, was “too bad they are black.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? In loving memory of a dear husband, father, grandfather who passed away February 20, 2010. A special smile, a special face, In our hearts, a special place, No words we speak can ever say, How much we miss you everyday. To hear your voice, and see your smile, To sit and talk with you awhile, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish today. You may be out of sight, But you remain in our hearts forever. Always loved and remembered each day, Wife, Lillian E. and sons Alan, Jeff and Tim

Gone but not forgotten. Your friends, Ray and Flo

In Loving Memory of

Elsworth John Thompson February 25, 2009 The moment that you died, Our heart split in two, The one side filled with memories, The other died with you. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks, Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you tight within our hearts, And there you will remain, Life goes on without you, But it will never be the same. For those who still have their dads, Treat him with tender care, You will never know the emptiness, As when you turn and he is not there. Miss you and love you, Grace, Wendy and Don, George and Brenda, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren

opportunities to keep active. The social aspects of curling are well known but there are also physical benefits in curling. Sometimes pride keeps a seasoned curler with physical limitations from continuing to curl. Perhaps you’re an armchair curler who has followed the televised matches but just never tried the game yourself. Here’s where stick curling can provide an entertaining option to keep you an involved citizen. The Town of Arnprior and the Greater Seniors Council of Arnprior are hosting two events in conjunction with Canada 150th. Senior Stick Curling Fun Days at the Arnprior Curling Club will be held on Feb. 23 and March 16. For the first event on Feb. 23, a lunch is also included. Need a ride to or from the curling club? Basketball team sets club record in tournament wins DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A basketball team made up of players from the Arnprior and Renfrew area has done what none has in the past. The Valley Pride U12 girls’ team is the first to win three tournaments in a row. Not only that, they haven’t even lost a tournament game. Not in Brockville. Not in Gloucester. Not in the west end of Ottawa. How did they do it? “They’ve got great grit,” said Chris Spratt, who along with daughter Sarah coaches the team. “They’ve been behind in games and it looks like the other team is about to walk away with it, and they find a way to come back.” He is especially proud of a cham-

The team has racked up at least 36 medals this year, and are aiming for at least another 12.

pionship win that saw the team claw back to tie it up and force overtime. Chris has coached basketball for 25 years; high school teams with big teenage boys. He is more than impressed at how tough the girls are on the court. Team captain Anna Hirst agrees that the key to their success is heart. But she also qualifies it. “We are very energetic. We’re competitive but we’re friendly too. We don’t get a lot of fouls,” said the highscoring point guard. “And we’re super fast!” Anna’s favourite tournament was the one in Brockville, due to the fact they stayed in a hotel. With a pool. This is just her second year at basketball, but she really loves playing games and her teammates. She’s looking forward to the team’s fourth and final tournament. Chris said the game is growing in this region, and that development at younger ages is high. “What you are seeing at this age used to not happen until Grade 9,” he said. “So that’s a big difference. The attraction isn’t necessarily due to the rise of the NBA’s Toronto Raptors either, he indicated. “It’s definitely become more popular – at the grass roots level area, I’d say.”

No Valley Pride team has won three tournaments in a row, let alone every tournament game to date. The three-tournament champion Valley Pride U12 team is, back row from left, Maya Mulvihill, Abi Daniels, Ava Riopelle and Naomi Daley; middle, Claire Gallagher, Amber Reid, Taryn McGregor, Molly Sheldrick and Mika Clifford; front, Anna Hirst and Camryn Buffam; missing, Elena Valliquette.
