That trend appears to be over. Enter the Highlanders. “We’re looking to start up minor baseball again in Arnprior,” said Scott Buffam, a parent with fond memories of playing ball himself as a kid. “We are going to be called the Arnprior Highlanders Baseball Club. We’ll play in the National Capital Ontario Baseball Association.” A new league, there are six Ottawa teams ready to hit the pitch this spring. (Previously city players were making the trek over to Gatineau. This is the first year for the new league of city teams.) Arnprior Highlanders will play regular season games against high level teams from throughout the National Capital Region and eastern Ontario and compete for the Baseball Ontario and Baseball Canada Championships. At the moment there is one team in the club, kids born in the years 2004 and 2005. It is a peewee level, similar to the their spring hockey team, which is also called the Highlanders. Buffam, along with other keen dads such as Kory Klinkenberg, Dustin Dorken, Peter Burnette and others have put the team together and are willing to help guide others through the process. “If anyone else wants to put a team together (for other age groups) we can support them,” Buffam said. “There’s been a few people approach us. It’s been a pretty good reaction so far.” The peewees have partnered with the Town of Arnprior’s recreation department for use of Nick Smith Centre facilities and, later in spring, McLean Park ball fields. No tax dollars will be used, but the club is accepting donations. Already organizations such as Optimist Club, Sullivan & Son, and TD Canada Trust have stepped

up. An orientation and tryouts are slated for a yet-to-be-determined date later this month. The kids will then have off-season workouts at Kenwood Centre to start, then move to arena B when the ice comes out before hitting the field in late April or early May. All kids of that age group are welcome. The A/AA team encourages youth from across the Upper Ottawa Valley — Petawawa to Kilaloe to Renfrew — to try out. Currently there are eight players committed to tryouts. Coaches will be Buffam, Dorken, and Curtis Watson. “It’s a great sport. It’s a different skill set, different pace, and which parents don’t love sitting back on a summer night to watch some baseball,” Buffam said. Renfrew County Health Unit issues Fentanyl alert After a number of incidents in the City of Ottawa, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued an alert on Fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid that is much more toxic than most other opioids. Opioids include drugs like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, methadone and codeine. Fentanyl is usually prescribed in patch form as a painkiller. It is around 50 to 100 times more toxic than morphine. This makes the risk of accidental overdose much higher. Fentanyl is also being made illegally and sold illegally. This illicit fentanyl is often made as a powder and mixed with drugs like cocaine, crack, heroin, marijuana and others. It is also being pressed into pills and sold as things like oxycodone (OxyContin, Fake Oxys, Faded 80s) and Percocet or other pills including speed and ecstasy/MDMA. What is the risk with fentanyl? When fentanyl is mixed with other opioids, alcohol, benzodiazepines, or stimulants like cocaine, it increases the risk of accidental overdose. There is no easy way to know if fentanyl is in a drug. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Any drug can be mixed with fentanyl. Even a very small amount can cause overdose.
What are the signs of an overdose? Centre, and participating pharmacies. Someone having an overdose from pain mediAn overdose is a medical emergency. Renfrew dentist and Arnprior resident Dr. Janice King knows how lucky she is to live in Canada and wants to give back to those in need in Peru. King will mark 25 years as a dentist in June and 21 years at her Renfrew office at 7 Argyle St. in May and is off to South America to provide dental services to those who do not have access to them. This is her third trip with Edmonton-based Kindness in Action. She has also gone to a different part of Peru in 2011 and Nicaragua in 2013. “I just think we are very lucky with what we have access to in Canada,” said King. “I think it’s important that we give back to others in need. I’m lucky and I can afford to do it.” Kindness in Action’s mission is to provide dental health services, doing as much as we can with what we have; to honour, support and empower those with less and assist them in becoming self-sufficient; and to educate and raise awareness of developing world issues. ness in Action more than 25 years ago and says it is really a transformational experience that brings you out of your comfort zone. “The fact that she is going for a third time says it all, she is going to work in tough conditions, shes volunteering and taking time out of her busy practice,” said Shapka. “It’s a gift that she is going, it’s very unselfish and speaks to the quality of her heart.” She is really proud of the work they do there, especially the quality. “The nice thing with this group is the quality of work is the same you would have here,” said King. “It’s providing access to people who would not have access to dental care and prevention.” She leaves on April 1 and arrives in the Sacred Valley in Peru’s Andean highlands on April 2. The group is comprised of 22 volunteers, seven dentists (as far as King knows, she is the only dentist from Ontario), three dental students and three hygienists. The group will set up their base on April 2 and they will be volunteering their dental services from April 3 to 7. While there they will be doing mostly fillings, extractions and education on oral health. “Education is a big part of it,” said King. “So ideally you’re doing fillings next time and not just taking teeth out.” She recalls seeing many kids who could not eat because their teeth were rotting and after they receive treatment at a free clinic they are able to go ahead and eat again. “The people who are coming to the clinic, many would not have seen a dentist before, or if they did, it was at one of these clinics because
they go once a year,” said King. King’s daughter Cassie, who is a Grade 12 student at Arnprior and District High School and also wants to be a dentist, will be volunteering on the trip as well. When they are finished, they will also be going on a four-day trek at Machu Picchu. On previous trips, King has also been able to take her other children and recounts a story when her son gave a teacher a backpack of supplies and she didn’t realize it was for all the students to keep. “She was crying because every student had not had a pencil before,” said King. “I wish all my kids could come this time, they have all gone before.” According to Kindness in Action, 500 people are helped during every project. “They are just so thankful for the work that you do,” said King. “It’s a free clinic and the people will be lined up.” She packs her luggage and also brings some extra toothbrushes and things. “They speak Spanish and I don’t speak a lot, so it’s nice to give them something after they may have been scared. I leave what I can,” said King. She wanted to let the community know she is going on the trip because in the past when she has gone people have wanted to donate items for those in need. She suggests anyone who would like to help should drop off items (small toys, school supplies, colouring books, small soaps, etc.) to her office by March. 24. “It’s a great community I live and work in,” said King on the support she has received. “I’ve been here more than 20 years and it’s a great place for sure.”

It’s never an entertaining place to be — a hospital bed — but it has become a little more elevating with digital monitors at Arnprior & District Memorial. Auxiliary services at Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) has purchased $290,000 worth of “bedside terminals” for the complex continuing care department. Forty of the digital monitors have been installed with four more to go. Along with staff being able to check the patient’s chart and other important features such as Xrays and blood results, the patient can watch 16 television channels, listen to audio books, and play games. “It’s all part of the patient experience,” said Wendy Knechtel, communication manager. “Happy patients get better faster.” There is no Netflix or email until the hospital upgrades its cabling to include the Internet. But free services include weather, radio, mirror, and edu-

cation sites related to their condition. A hospital map has yet to be included, but will be when ARH overhauls its website this summer. Each terminal comes complete with earphone jacks. The keyboards are dishwasher friendly. Recent news items have explored cost complaints in other jurisdictions. Some have said the prices are so high that hospitals are using the terminals to generate additional revenue. Knechtel and nurse Ralph Mawdsley, clinical informatics specialist, say the intent is to break even. It is $10 for three days, $50 for seven, and $75 for 14. The old tube televisions have gone to a nearby hospital. Mawdsley said feedback has been positive to the user-friendly devices. “I think we went from the 1970s to 2017,” he said. “The patients seem to really like it.” The hospital also has new digital screens in the hallways. About $9,000 was spent for three in the hospital and two at the Grove Nursing Home.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Drug crisis hits close to home Curiosity and risk-taking are a normal part of the teen and young adult years, and for some people opioids seem to be the drugs of choice. The recent death of a Kanata teen by opioid use has brought this issue closer to home. Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued an alert about fentanyl and parents, caregivers and school officials should arm themselves with information about what to look for and how and where to seek help. Prescription opioids include medication like morphine, percocet and fentanyl. Getting drugs from a drug dealer, ordered online or from a friend is very risky and potentially life threatening. Prescription fentanyl is a pain medication that comes in a patch or liquid and is manufactured under strict guidelines and controlled environment. Opioids are a depressant drug, which means that they slow down the part of the brain that controls breathing. Overdose of opioids can result in death because breathing stops. All opioid drugs can be dangerous and need to be taken as prescribed by a medical professional. Illicit fentanyl has been confirmed in a variety of both fake prescription pills, as well as other street drugs such as cocaine, crystal meth, heroin and marijuana. Illicit fentanyl is known to be deadly in small amounts such as the size of a grain of salt, making the risk of overdosing extremely high. Prescription fentanyl is about 100 times more toxic than morphine, but illicit fentanyl may be as high as 10,000 times more toxic than morphine, so you never really know what you’re getting. Fentanyl is being sold on the street under such names as “Faded ‘80s,” “Greenies,” or “Green Monsters,” According to the Renfrew Health Unit: Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and allows time for the individual to be taken to a hospital to receive immediate life-saving medical treatment. It is available free of charge in Renfrew County at Renfrew County and District Health Unit, Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre, and participating pharmacies. An overdose is a medical emergency. Anyone that suspects or witnesses an overdose should call 9-1-1, even if naloxone has been administered.
Arnprior District High School sets an example with name change To the editor:
Regarding the Arnprior District High School (ADHS) name change for its athletics team. I find it a bit disingenuous for a person to write in and say “There are many of us who can understand that the name Redmen can mean wearers of red. No depictions of certain people, groups, communities, just those who wear red. No more, no less.” That might make sense if not for the fact that according to a CBC news report on Dec. 9, 2014, the then principal of ADHS said that the school (operating for nearly 140 years) has had the Redmen name for “about 100 years” and “has nothing to do with aboriginal people” … “But several years ago the senior members of the football team added the arrowhead logo to their helmets.” The caption under a picture of a Redmen jacket says, “aboriginal imag-
ery added to logos and jerseys later on have since been removed.” Saying “several years ago” and “later on” doesn’t really give a sense of how very long that “chief’s head” logo was there. It was added in the 1960s and was then eventually replaced by an arrowhead … that’s half a century, folks! A half a century during which the paths walked by aboriginal and non-aboriginal were very different. Another writer said, “When I played cowboys and Indians as a child I would gladly be an Indian because they were brave.” I too might gladly be an Indian if my children weren’t taken away from the family sometimes as young as four and sent to residential school; if the source of food in some indigenous communities in this province wasn’t contaminated with mercury poisoning without anything being

done for the last 40 years; if even though aboriginal kids represent 7 % of kids in Canada they didn’t also represent almost 50 % of kids in foster care; if even though aboriginal people make up only 4% of people in Canada they didn’t make up 33 % of all women and 25 % of all men in federal prison. Oh, and let’s not forget, since we’re talking about young people here, the part about if suicides among First Nations youth (aged 15 – 24) weren’t five-to-six times higher than non-aboriginal youth. I could go on but I’ll stop there. This social disaster is not accidental. This is a result of long standing old colonial policies. “Brave”? The First Nations people of this province darn well better be brave because they’re facing problems that I suspect many people getting all cranked up about the leaders at ADHS being “overly po-

litical correct” aren’t even aware of as they get in a snit about changing the name of a student sports team, because they think “some interloper wants to wipe out tradition because he imagines some slight to a minority.” I don’t think the school is trying to wipe out tradition, I think they’re trying to set an example of wiping out long-standing injustice, and perhaps in doing so, teach the kids at the school to do the same thing. How about instead of sneering about being politically correct we all get behind being “humanely correct” and maybe some day then we can all belong to a “proud race” of Canadians who stand up for justice for all. “Even in a small town.”

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Arnprior Regional Health regularly consults with and encourages feedback from the community about the organization and its services. To ensure tactics are appropriate from a patient point of view, we have a Patient & Family Advisory Council (PFAC). PFAC is creating a forum where the community has an opportunity to participate in the delivery of Quality Care at ARH.This council for the hospital is helping create a strong foundation for partnership with the community and ensuring that ARH administration is aware of the needs/ desires and expectation of patient and their families. A similar councils operates at the Grove, comprised of residents and family members. PFAC meets regularly and is seeking other to join the committee. Members should be (former) patients or family members of patients, who have received care at ARH in the last year. If you are interested in this committee, please contact Wendy at 613-623-7962 x293.

Knights host free throw contest The Knights of Columbus Youth Basketball Free Throw Championships are held annually in January by most councils throughout North America. Youth, boys and girls, ages nine to 14 as of Jan. 1 are invited to participate. Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2082 invited youth attending the schools in the region to
participate in the championship event at St. Joseph’s school gymnasium on Jan. 11. The champions went on to compete in the district level of competition at St. Joseph’s High in Renfrew on Feb. 7. Champions from that competition go on to compete in Ottawa at the Regional level of competition later in February. That competition is huge.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: A SERIES ON INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN RENFREW COUNTY - 2 OF 3
Ending Violence Against Women (EVA)-Renfrew County is a committee that focuses on prevention, education, systemic change, and service provision related to violence against women. More than half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Approximately every 6 days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. On any given night in Canada, 3,200 women and their 3000 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home. Yet we often turn a blind eye to the violence next door, thinking it isn’t any of our business. When the public or media do pay attention to Intimate partner violence it is after the fact, when it is already too late to save someone from injury or even death. We must start making it our business. This 3 part series on intimate partner violence aims to increase understanding in our communities, with the hope of preventing harm and increasing support to our neighbours, friends and family members who are experiencing abuse. Follow us on Facebook @EVA-End Violence AgainstWomen-Renfrew County and If you wish to get involved do not hesitate to reach us at evarenfrewcounty@gmail.com.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN RURAL AREAS?
• Community and extended family ties that deny the truth of violence against women … “you have made your bed….”. • Lack of privacy = everyone knows everyone’s business = very hard to trust anyone to talk about what’s really happening. • Traditional gender roles can “normalize” abuse. Abusers are not held accountable for their behaviour. • No public transportation = cannot physically get away or reach out for confidential support. • Low employment = hard to leave abusive relationship because of poverty. • Women in farming lose income and cannot leave animals behind. • Lack of affordable childcare. • Abusers often have access to weapons & firearms that are used as threats. • Isolation because of long distances to get help. Further information: http://www.chatelaine.com/living/what-the-renfrew-county-murders-tell-us-about-rural-violence/
Traps for Women - Why Women Stay? Canadian Women’s Foundation studies shows 67 per cent of us know a woman who has been abused. Intimate partner violence is an epidemic in our country because it is rarely as easy as “just leaving.” You may have heard that it’s complicated and that the valid reasons why women stay could be listed on hundreds of pages. That couldn’t be more true. We need to begin to understand, support and believe victims -- not blame them.
So why doesn’t she just leave? • She may stay because she fears for her life or the life of her children because he’s threatened what he might do if she dares try to leave. • She may stay because she believes she has nowhere to go. She might not know how the community can support her or the local shelter might be full. • She may stay because everyone thinks her abuser is a “good guy” and she feels ashamed and embarrassed and is sure she’ll be judged and not believed if she speaks out about the abuse. • She may stay because she’s willing to sacrifice her own safety for the well-being of her children so they won’t have to grow up in poverty or without a father. • She may stay because her family, friends or community have told her they won’t support her and that they believe divorce is never a viable option. 14 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, March 9, 2017
• She may stay because of her immigration status or because her first language isn’t English to be able to reach out for help. • She may stay because she has a disability and is dependent on him for daily care. • She may stay because she grew up in a family where abuse was normal, making it hard to recognize when a relationship is unhealthy • She may stay because she loves him and he seems to regret the violence. She may want to try to make the relationship work and help him to change. • She may stay because she blames herself. She’s been told it’s her fault and that she deserves to be abused. It’s time to stop the victim-blaming. Instead of asking why she doesn’t just leave, we should be asking different questions when we read those headlines. We should be asking, “Why is he abusive?” or “How can we break the cycle of violence?” or “How can I support her to be safe?” We also need to ask ourselves why these questions seem so scary. I believe it’s because they - finally - upset the status quo, and shine the light on the real problem. There are good reasons why women stay. But there is no reason we can’t work together to stop the violence, for good. Source: http://www.canadianwomen.org/blog/why-women-stay-abusive-relationships
Jane’s Story
Police responded to a 911 call from a remote rural area. It took approximately 45 minutes to arrive at the location of the call. The telephone was located outside on a telephone pole at the end of a very long laneway in a wooded acreage. A man was standing at the location of the phone and when questioned by police he indicated that he had been threatened by his girlfriend who had been drinking heavily, but that he now believed she would not cause him any harm and he apologized for the call. When police persisted in their request to speak with the woman, the man indicated he did not know where she was at the moment. Police followed the laneway to a remote cabin and discovered the woman badly beaten. It took her some time to escape to use the phone as she waited until he was intoxicated and sleeping. However he awoke and discovered her at the telephone. At the point of discovery she was unwilling to provide any statement to police. Police however were able to take her to the hospital and then to a shelter.
DISPELLING THE MYTHS
MYTH: Domestic violence is usually an isolated incident. FACT: Violence is a pattern of behaviour that exists in some relationships and gets worse and more frequent over time. MYTH: The problem is not really violence against “women.” Women are just as violent as men. FACT: In about 90% of domestic assaults, the man is the perpetrator. This may be uncomfortable but it is true.

Racers ripping up the racecourses ANNE LEFEBVRE
Calabogie Ski Racing Club’s youngest competitors, the U10s, are only seven, eight, and nine years old, but already they have the need for speed. These little racers have completed two races in their series so far. One event was a slalom at Mont Cascades January 22 and a giant slalom (GS) on their home hill, Calabogie Peaks February 5. At this age, they are learning to choose a good line down the hill which will allow them to come close to the gates and go around smoothly, gaining speed as they go. Jordyn Rog and Della Zlepnig are leading the way for the girls. Della was just outside the top 10, finishing 13th in the slalom, but snagged a 5th place ribbon in the GS. Jordyn has been consistent with 9th in slalom and 11th in GS. Laena Good also led the way in GS, picking up a 10th place finish. Clare Nelson, Kailey Gropp, and Hannah Cunliffe have stayed tight, trading places, but always landing in the top 25. Michael Atherton sped down the GS course and won his first gold on home territory! ADHS wrestlers compete at EOSSA
The Arnprior District High School (ADHS) wrestling team travelled to Smiths Falls to compete at EOSSAA in February. The top two wrestlers in each weight category qualified for OFSSA in Brampton, March 1-3. Kaitlyn Edge, having placed second in a tournament in Renfrew the weekend before, felt ready to compete. This is only Kaitlyn’s second year wrestling, having come to the sport later in high school. She worked her way through to get the final match. She came up against a girl from Renfrew who has been wrestling for many years and suffered her first loss.
This did place Kaitlyn in second qualifying her for OFSAA but she had earlier qualified in snowboarding and decided to go that path. The rest of the team made up of Liam Mayhew, Gavin Toole, and AJ Howlett all were wrestling in the same weight class. The class had nine competitors. AJ, in his first year of wrestling and with a background in Judo, wrestled hard. He was able to win two matches which gave him a fourth place finish. Gavin Toole in his third year of wrestling had to wrestle teammate Liam and unfortunately for Gavin he lost. Gavin finished in fifth
place after winning one of his matches. Liam had four matches, winning his first two and then going for 1st but lost to a wrestler from Kingston. This qualified him for OFSAA but according to the rules the third place finisher can challenge if they did not meet during the tournament. The Smiths Falls wrestlers wrestled Liam for the right to go to OFSAA but Liam’s many years of wrestling experience proved too much for the novice wrestler and Liam kept his qualification. The team wrestled hard, showed grace in their losses and made their coach Kevin Mayhew proud.

Seniors hurry hard to give curling a try DARREL O’SHAUGHNESSY Greater Arnprior Seniors Council
Well folks, from the comments made by both participants and volunteers about the Seniors Stick Curling Fun Day, the general consensus of opinion was “We simply and unequivocally had a blast.” And, I should say, from the smiles and chuckles, and the laughter resonating throughout the curling club, along with the friendly taunts between the curlers, it definitely was a fun time. Unfortunately, we could not obtain any official scores. The only comment from the curling club’s chief officials was that, “Whatever happens at the Arnprior Curling Club stays at the ACC.” In fact, it was even hush-hush concerning the “Battle of the Mayors.” Go figure aye. Anyway, we are delighted to report that the Seniors Stick Curling Fun Day on Feb. 23 was a great success in every respect. In fact, the ACC welcomed 25 fun loving and energetic Senior Stick Curlers to their wonderful facility, and provided more than 20 volunteers to support the event. The greeters, fitters, sweepers, and the instructors were all most competent, fun, and yes, even entertaining at times. And, let’s talk about the food and kitchen staff for a moment. The food was prepared in typically ACC fashion, it was absolutely delicious and served with grace and style, along with a friendly smile, and sometimes even with a poke of fun. Stick curling is a game played on ice requiring hand-eye coordination, a game of skill, strategy, and some luck of course but above all, it’s a game of fun. The game involves delivering a
44-pound curling rock the length of a sheet of ice (146 feet) using a stick. However, and just as important, the sport is all about meeting new friends and neighbours, socializing, and helping you remain strong and fit. The Seniors Stick Curling Fun Day was a wonderful experience and only made possible because of the significant contributions made by so many. We thank the Province of Ontario for the grant from the Ontario Recreation and Sport Community Fund. We thank the Town of Arnprior’s recreation department, which unselfishly provided the much needed safety helmets and grippers and great support staff. We are in debt to the Arnprior Curling Club, which made it happen through their volunteer base and their excellent ice-making preparations. And, the Greater Arnprior Seniors Council (GASC) of course who spearheaded the event as part of our ongoing commitment to help create new and exciting social, recreational, and educational opportunities for seniors. The next and last Seniors Stick Curling Fun Day for the season will be held again on Thursday, March 16, at the Arnprior Curling Club from 10.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. We invite all seniors to come out and give stick curling a try. We will promise you plenty of laughter and excitement, a delicious lunch, and an opportunity to socialize with your new friends and neighbours. To register, or to obtain more information about this program, or to arrange transportation to and from the Arnprior Curling Club please contact Nick Smith Centre, 77 James St. – 613-623-7301 ext. 1795/email rgwalchmai@ arnprior.ca

CRAIG - In Memory of Robert (Bob) Craig who passed away March 4th 2014. God looked around his garden, And found an empty place. Then he looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain. He knew that you would never, Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your eyes, And whispered please be mine. It broke our hearts to lose you Bob, But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Love your sister Donna and Bill And the rest of the brothers and sisters.
