Rather it is Gallant’s use of a photo of Nathan Cirillo, the corporal murdered in 2014 while standing guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. $10,000,000 New band River Town Saints SUBMITTED PHOTO
New country band River Town Saints includes Daniel DiGiacomo, Chris Labelle, Jeremy Bortot, Chris McComb and Jordan Potvin. McComb and Potvin both hail from Arnprior.

A little bit of hard work and a lot of Valley talent is going a long way for two Arnprior lads. New country band River Town Saints has two members who hail from Arnprior and the band’s first single is slowly rising on the country charts. ‘A Little Bit Goes A Long Way’ is currently number 34 on the Billboard Country Canada chart and in December it was the third most added song on country radio. The band is described as a five-piece harmony driven group with rock n’roll roots. The moniker is a play on where they grew up, all of the band members grew up on the Ottawa River and a few of them played in church bands. Rhythm guitarists Chris McComb grew up in Arnprior and drummer Jordan Potvin moved to town five years ago. Both are feeling the support of the community, especially since the group’s first video just hit. “I’ve been hanging out around town and people are saying congratulations, so much has happened in the last few months it’s cool to see the community’s reaction,” said McComb. “It’s been really welcoming and encouraging, people are saying they hear the song on the radio and that’s a really cool feeling.” Potvin says it’s a little different because he didn’t grow up in town but people are starting to recognize him too. “I really love the small town feel, there really is that small town feeling where everyone has your back and is proud of us,” said Potvin. The new video was filmed in downtown Ottawa. When asked if Arnprior will make
an appearance in the next video, McComb hinted at the possibility. “When we sent Open Road Recordings our first video it was shot in my dad’s barn in Pine Grove, just outside of Arnprior,” said McComb. “That’s where it all started, the team really liked it a lot, hopefully we will use it in a future video.” The group has been together now for two years and McComb says it has been a lot of hard work. “I remember growing up and thinking how cool it would be to be in a band. It’s a lot of hard work, personally I thrive on being busy,” said McComb. He explains there are a lot of steps leading up to releasing an album. “Part of it is writing music, demoing music and we have to like them. It’s a long process, it takes months for one song,” said McComb. They are working towards an album but first they will release an EP. “We have four songs recorded, the last two have been tough … We are all learning and becoming a better band,” said McComb. They both hope they will play somewhere in the Valley soon and have a few shows planned for the spring and summer. The biggest show they have lined up is at one of the biggest country festivals of the year: Boots and Hearts Aug. 4 to 7, in the Barrie area. “That’s exciting, it’s been on our bucket list,” said McComb. They are both appreciative of the support from their family and friends and right now they are enjoying the ride. “It’s a lot of fun but a lot of hard work,” said Potvin. “You are chasing that dream and it will really take off.” To follow the band see its website: http:// rgk.ca/rivertownsaints/

Military becoming wing of Conservative party: Antler Continued from page 1
The development planned for 30 Daniel St. North will be discussed at a public meeting on Monday, 6:30 p.m. during council’s regular meeting at town hall. The developer is asking to covert the home into apartments, build an addition, and construct units in the backyard. Twelve units in all. There has been some backlash since the story first appeared in last week’s issue. The home is more than 100 years old and is on one of the town’s busiest roads. However, there is some concern that no legal protections are in place to prevent alterations to a home some would say is historically significant. The plans, photo at left, shows the addition to the left of the home, bottom centre, would be larger than the original structure. The back units would be duplexes, with a parking lot to the extreme left.
fundraiser. It referred to the first email, not as “Terrorists among us” but as “Loyalty is what makes good citizens,” although it did use all capital letters. The second email was signed by a staffer, Chris Brown, who said, “Cheryl and I are pleased to let you know that a donation will be made to the Stand on Guard Fund in support of the families of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo.” PAST GAFFES
Gallant has a long record of gaffes over her lengthy time in office. During the most recent election campaign, she chastised Lehoux for attending a ceremony for fallen soldiers. He said she was the one campaigning at the event; he was attending as a veteran. D.W. Antler is another military vet who had a “visceral, emotional reaction” to Gallant’s fundraising email. On his blog The Smell Test, he derided her as morally bankrupt and proof of the “creeping fascism that has infected the Canadian Conservative Party.” In a phone interview, Antler said the military is now seen as little more than a wing of the Conservative Party. “We have a big problem in the military. Politicians drape themselves in the flag for partisan gain, and make it look like the military is an element of the Conservative Party and not here to defend all Canadians.” R0013661777-0128
“The politics of cynicism and fear don’t work anymore. Obviously it hasn’t worked out for them.” Lehoux, who lost to Gallant in the last election, said there is a “racial” element to the email; linking refugees to Islamic terrorists is wrong, he said. As for the lack of proof for the subject line, Lehoux said most constituents have grown numb to Gallant’s rhetoric. to actual costs. Ball diamond rental fees used to be set per game (about 1.5 hours), but will move to an hourly bases. For adults, then, last year’s fee of $50 per game changes to just over $33 per hour. Tournament fees are reduced to be more competitive. For adults it will go from $401 to $334. Reeve Walter Stack floated the idea of converting a ball diamond to a soccer pitch. The summer children’s program at the museum, free in the past, will cost $7 per child. Room rentals, also free in the past, will cost $75. No changes will occur in sewage charges or animal control. The report was passed at the Feb. 22 council meeting.
Police eye distracted driving, lane changes in March R0013715751

Staff at Arnprior town hall recently reviewed user fees and charges – largely applying to developers – with the aim at cost recovery. Many prices went up, some went down or stayed the same. Council was uncomfortable with the report tabled by treasurer Jennifer Morawiec at the Feb. 8 meeting. They noted that just a few months ago residents were told that water and wastewater fees were already increasing for cost recovery purposes. The response was that taxpayers lose out every time a fee or charge is paid without considering the full lifecycle of the service and equip-
ment. And that the review was done – the first since 1996 – to match prices at neighbouring towns and to ensure they meet provincial laws and the town’s objectives. On comparisons related to building fees, the town’s add up to $1,430 but will increase to $1,505. Others include: • Russell Township $1,810; • Carleton Place $1,752; • Clarence Rockland $1,570; • Smiths Falls $1,522. If the same number of building fees were issued this year as last, revenue would increase by $10,000 for the town. The only fees related to water and wastewater that will change have to do with water and sewer service installation. They will move
Distracted driving and unsafe lane changes are the focus of Ottawa police for the month. There were more than 25,500 collisions between 2010 and 2014 due to distracted drivers. The collisions resulted in more than 6,900 injuries and 18 fatalities, said police in a news release. During the same time
frame, there were more than 15,700 collisions due to speeding, resulting in 74 fatalities and more than 4,200 injuries. The selective traffic enforcement program is part of the safer roads Ottawa program and is committed to preventing and eliminating road deaths and serious injuries.

Dave Bennett made a motion to amend the bill to Autumn Leaves for all direct costs less the hourly rate of the truck. “He and other staff had been there several times and the individual did not comply with this fire department,” said Coun. Jamey Larone. “There has been additional time spent there. “That truck was there on stand-by and it was not available if another fire had happened.” Council approved a motion to invoice Autumn Leaves for the direct cost of the fire vehicle along with all firefighter costs and the cost charged by outside agencies (Sunshine Coach moved residents). The direct cost includes what it actually cost to have the truck on site, for example, the fuel it used. Council asked Corbin to work with town staff to come up with a new number to invoice the company.

Two women on women’s day
I
nternational Women’s Day was celebrated this past Tuesday, March 8, with activities and information shared by millions across Canada and the world. Two prominent women in powerful positions, members of Parliament Karen McCrimmon and Cheryl Gallant, participated in women’s day. The point of women’s day is to achieve full gender equality, which has yet to be realized. A gender pay gap persists across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. United Nations statistics show women’s education, health and violence against them remains significantly worse than that of men. McCrimmon and Gallant are among the lucky few, and share a responsibility to lend other women a helping hand. However, the two couldn’t be further apart on style and substance when it comes to this topic and others. McCrimmon, the KanataCarleton MP, doesn’t normally bother with superficial issues like the clothes a woman wears in the workplace. But Gallant, the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP, does. And, unfortunately for serious-minded people, the latter’s view has become a news story. McCrimmon usually wears a red shirt on Friday to help show her support for soldiers. On Feb. 19 an accident meant she was forced

New Catholic French school, location raises numerous concern To the Editor: After giving some thought to the recent announcement of the Catholic French School being in Arnprior, I have concerns that range from location, traffic cost, where students are from, the overall need, the lack of communication on it – right up to and including the need to expropriate land form one of the past operating farms in Arnprior. I am aware of at least two alternative sites. Further to that, the Catholic Church owns land at the opposite end of Baskin Drive, which in my opinion would be suitable and at the same time address a number of the

concerns listed and perhaps more. I take and pick my granddaughter up a lot of days at A.J. Charbonneau School. To say the parking is limited is an understatement - most days I have to park out on Baskin Drive and a lot of those days I am made to park along the ditch on the south side of the road, which adds to the safety issue as you do not only have to cross a busy street, the depth of the ditch is such that I have to load my granddaughter from the traffic side of the car. Not many years back a child was hit at the corner of Baskin Drive and Stonehaven (luckily not seriously hurt) yes, there was a crossing guard

to change. Wearing red on Fridays is by no means the most she has done to show her support. McCrimmon did two tours of Afghanistan, is the first female navigator and first female commander of an air squadron. Her support is beyond reproach. Or one would suppose. Gallant, who has never been in the military, chided McCrimmon in the House of Commons for the clothing she wore that day. So much for lending a sister a helping hand. The issue is silly, of course. McCrimmon isn’t commenting because it is beneath the dignity of her position. Gallant isn’t commenting because - well, we don’t know why. But the scenario is revealing in that it shows what each MP values. McCrimmon believes actions and laying her life on the line is significant. Gallant likely has an extensive collection of red tops. The irony is that, to follow the logic, Gallant expects every Canadian to wear certain colours on certain days. How about blue on Mondays in support of capitalism? That type of thinking is the “creeping fascism” one veteran referred to in our top story this week. In the spirit of International Women’s Week, perhaps constituents - both men and women - could help educate Gallant on what it means to be an effective MP, woman, and charitable human being.

and it did prompt the installation of a school safety zone and lights. I did take the time to get information on the expropriate process. School Boards have the power to expropriate land! As in the case of the School Board doing so, the School Board is also the “Approving Authority”. Note here “An Expropriating Authority cannot expropriate land without the Approval Authority.” What happens when the two authorities are one and the same? There is also a process of appeals of sorts; it is called a “Hearing of Necessity.” It is intended to determine that the expropriation of the land is fair, sound, and reasonably neces-

sary! How necessary, fair or sound is this location? It is also noteworthy to be aware that in the Hearing Process, an Inquiry Officer can be appointed by the Ontario Attorney General, but the Approving Authority is the School Boards? When we get past that part of the issue we cannot or should not discount the serious safety issue that already exists with traffic volumes and traffic speed on that area of Baskin Drive. Cheryl Gallant disrespects Liberal MP who is a military veteran On Friday, Feb. 19 Cheryl Gallant stood in the House of Commons and yelled at retired Lieutenant Colonel Karen McCrimmon, who serves as MP for the neighbouring Kanata-Carleton. Mrs. Gallant was, among other things, outraged that Ms. McCrimmon was not wearing a red shirt to support military families that day. Karen McCrimmon is a role model for equality in the workforce; both in the military and non-military positions, and her continuing service to the Canadian people should be respected. Over her career, she has
shattered glass ceilings that impeded career progress for military women. During her international postings, including two tours to Afghanistan, her family stressed and worried through crisis as all military families do. Cheryl Gallant dressed up in a military costume for the photo on her website. Karen McCrimmon, the first female navigator and first female commander of an air squadron, exemplifies military family past and future. If retired Lieutenant Colonel McCrimmon was a man, would Mrs. Gallant yell “How dare he?” about his clothing? If retired Lieutenant Colonel McCrimmon was a man, would Mrs. Gal-
lant be able to ask an intelligent question about the withdrawal of CF-18’s rather than shrieking about the missing red shirt? According to a recent poll by Abacus Data, the majority of Canadians support our government’s plan to eradicate ISIL. Meanwhile, voters in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke disagree with most Canadians and re-elected Mrs. Gallant. However, they are expecting their voice to be represented and their voice is not disrespectful of former military officers. Mrs. Gallant should apologize. She must apologize to McCrimmon for her clearly inappropriate and almost sexist remarks. She should
Bellamy Road maintenance lacking To the Editor: To anyone travelling Bellamy Road between White Lake and Bayview Lodge road this will be no surprise. This section of road is the worst winter maintained and that’s a misnomer in the area. We have been underserved for years on this road and this is the worst it’s been. I’m
wondering if it’s just a poor snowmobile trail that we need the groomer on. A little salt would be an improvement or contract it out to Mississippi Mills. They seem to be able to clear their section of that same road. Terry Cunningham White Lake
Province spends too much on separate boards Continued from page 8
There is a much bigger issue to me. How much longer do we as taxpayers think we can afford the cost of the operation of Government Programs? We all agree it seems that the Province of Ontario has mismanaged Ontario Hydro resulting in unaffordable rates. The cost of Hydro has cost us: jobs, businesses, seniors to reconsider staying in our homes and it seem our government cannot correct the problem! How long can we afford to have an education system that has four tiers of structure? Public English, public French, separate English, and separate French. All with administrative staff structure: teachers, principals and assistant principals, buildings and structures that are duplicate at the least, and add to that another overhead cost of transportation consortium. All of these duplication overhead costs and the continuing addition of new schools when decreasing enrolment empties existing infrastructure. Is one building not good enough for all students or does certain groupings deserve new and better? (Note: the recent article on ADHS making the list of schools in Ontario operating at less than 60 per cent of the education ministry’s rated ca-
pacity and/or having greater than 200 unused pupil spaces for two years or more.) When will we as rate payers and our MPP’s come to realize that education is a Provincial Government responsibility that should be built on: reasonable cost to taxpayers, academic excellence, providing students in all classrooms proper teacher/student ratio, put a laptop/tablet on every desk and move into the world of technology in a real way, and spend money on academics and advanced education for all students rather than administrative overhead and brick and mortar! The world has changed and hopefully moved in a progressive manner. When will we come to the realization that we should not and cannot provide everything to everyone-but we can do the right thing in this case build an education system that provides a: 100% English option, a 100% French option, and 100% Immersion option in the same building, same administration and do so cost effectively allowing for all the real needs of the classroom. Let’s integrate and not promote segregation. This is my individual opinion. Walter Stack Arnprior

Daniel Street home’s historic value should be maintained To the Editor: I was curious about the history of the house on Daniel Street which is the topic of the March 3 edition of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide’s story “Major development planned for Daniel”. By searching through the land records in the Arnprior & McNab/Braeside Archives, I was able to establish that the house was likely built in the mid to late 1880’s by Thomas William Kenny. Other records revealed interesting details about his life. T.W. Kenny moved to Arnprior to work for the McLachlin Bros. Lumber Company in 1880 after a successful career in business in Dublin, Ireland. Kenny and his wife Rachel named the home ‘Kylemore’, meaning ‘Great Woods’ due to the abundance of trees on the property. This was recorded in a note below a photograph of the Kenny family by Charles Macnamara who worked alongside Mr. Kenny in the office of McLachlin Bros. Kenny worked for McLachlin Bros. as a Confidential Clerk from 1880 until his death in 1897. The Saturday Globe of October 1, 1892 reported that at that time “during the sawing season about 700 men find constant employment in the mills, and in the winter the operations in the woods require a force
of from 900 to 1000 men, besides about 300 teams.” From the office at the foot of the bridge the staff could watch logs passing through the slide to Mill No. 1 located approximately where East Side Mario’s stands today. According to his obituary, T.W. Kenny served on the Board of Education, the local Board of Health and was a Justice of the Peace for several years. When he passed away, the mills were shut down for half a day and school children were let out of school to watch the funeral cortege move along John Street from the Methodist Church to the graveyard at Albert Street. The property changed hands over the years until Lieutenant Colonel Harold Foster Baker returned to Arnprior from Belgium with his new bride Cecile following WWll. They made 30 Daniel Street North their home and it remained in the Baker family until it was sold to the Cubarro Corporation in 2013. Properties like Kylemore are not part of the Arnprior Downtown Heritage Conservation District established in 2007. It is my understanding that if the new owners decide to alter the building exterior, there is nothing to compel them to retain any of its distinctive architectural features. Nor is there any mechanism that the Town can use to stipulate that the new units reflect the ar-

The Municipal Heritage Committee which established the Arnprior Downtown Heritage Conservation District no longer exists. of this development on the heritage value of this property. A full discussion of the proposal will take place at the next regular meeting of council on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. Laurie Dougherty Arnprior

Follow France’s lead and stop wasting food A hand of applause must go out to France, as the nation of nearly 70 million people recently passed a law which forbids supermarkets from throwing away or spoiling food. Instead flawed items or those nearing their best before date (rather than being thrown out or made inedible with bleach as was common there and remains the norm here) must be given to charity and community kitchens. Other countries are considering following France’s example. Canada, quite frankly should too. More than 10 per cent of this country live in homes where food is scarce. One in six children go to school hungry and, as a university student, let me say that money often is the reason that our diets are less than ideal. Last year there was an outbreak of scurvy, I believe, when student’s meal plans ran out and they tried to sustain themselves on KD. Canadian homes and businesses waste millions of tons of food every year – despite these statistics and all that waste costs $31 billion. And we all say the government wastes money. Canada needs to join France and other countries in recognizing the realities that we face in the coming decades or the number of Canadians going hungry will simply grow. This doesn’t just mean
introducing legislation to ensure that perfectly good food doesn’t go to waste in our stores and restaurants. I also want to advocate gleaning, which could prove particularly important for farming areas. Gleaning is an ancient process which has been practiced since biblical times and remains codified in many European countries. France included. Not only is food wasted in stores and markets, but some perfectly good harvest doesn’t even make it that far. Potatoes that are too small, carrots that are too crooked, grapes that aren’t full enough … all perfectly edible, all appetizing – just not worthy of having a name brand stuck to them. In Medieval Europe, after the local leaders had declared the harvest completed, peasants were allowed to go onto the farmer’s fields to take, or glean, the crops left behind; which weren’t wanted for the harvest. In countries where gleaning is practiced today, again once the harvest is officially over, gleaners have a set period of time during d ay l i g h t hours,

to go and take what remains so that it doesn’t go to waste. Now, I can hear the right wingers bemoaning about property rights, but gleaners wouldn’t be skulking around in the dark - they could be supervised and only come in certain hours. Or, better yet, supermarkets and restaurants could simply swallow their pride and take odd looking potatoes and imperfect apples and sell them at a discount due to said imperfection. So long as they are still edible. If all Canadians are to prosper, it might mean looking to the past or to some sustainability techniques we’ve scoffed at before. No one should go hungry in this country and if we’d take a lesson from France, far fewer would have to. Brendan Edge Trent University Student Arnprior

Come join your friends for a day of Fun to Remember!
Pain and Swelling “unexplainable!” A friend of mine recently told me that he has had pain on the inside of his left calf now for a few weeks and it doesn’t let go. Ever since he also noticed that his lower left leg and ankle was visibly swollen. He said there was never a bruise, nor can he remember what he’d done to it. Yes he is very active, but he didn’t hit himself or fell over something, at least not as far as he can remember. He said: “Last week it was so bad that I went to emergency, thinking that it might come from my heart or it being a clogged artery.” He was truly getting concerned that there was something bad going on as it wouldn’t light up and heal. With over six hours waiting time at Emergency, he decided to leave after a few hours again and to further monitor his leg.

I had a look at it and really, there was nothing visible, except the swelling. We discussed many options that could have happened and also investigated what this pain and the swelling would mean on the soul spiritual side of things. If there is something weird going on in our body, something that cannot be explained, we always identify the deeper meaning of “why we needed to get this and how it is a little “wink” to correct our lifestyle in one way or another. My friend got his “aha” moment and now at least on an emotional level he could relate to the pain and swelling. We also treated him with some homeopathic remedies and within only one day his symptoms had noticably improved. within a total of four days there was not trace of anything left. The pain as well as the swelling was completely gone!

The recent roller-coaster ride in the weather may have some of you wondering if winter will ever relinquish its icy grip. While there will likely be more snow and a few more plunges in the temperature, the sun’s everincreasing conviction reveals that spring is truly on its way. Other signs corroborate this, such as the vigorous, morning songs of House Finches and Northern Cardinals. There are other indications that spring is well on its way. In Algonquin Park, Dan Strickland reports that nearly a dozen pairs of Gray Jays are building or have already built nests. But locally other species have already passed that stage. Many of you living on farms have over recent weeks seen Common Ravens building nests on the top of silo ladders. Many of those now contain eggs with the female sitting low to stay out of sight while keeping the eggs warm. While ravens nest on human-made structures like silos, train trestles, and towers, their natural sites include cliff ledges and tall trees. In all situations, raven nests are bulky and are comprised entirely of sticks. Recently I came across a raven nest that, although nearly a kilometre away, be-
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way cause of its size was visible to my unaided eye. The nest was typical, being huge and made of sticks. It was placed in a large deciduous tree, easy to see without leaves to hide it. Through binoculars I could see a couple of ravens that seemed to be investigating the nest. Then I spotted a head sticking up above the sticks, one that wasn’t black like those of the ravens. Immediately I knew another bird had usurped the ravens’ nest, so I quickly set up my spotting scope for a better view. As soon as the scope was focused my suspicions were confirmed; sticking up from the nest was the unmistakable head of a Great Horned Owl! Great Horned Owls are the first birds in our area to lay eggs. They don’t build
nests but instead take over another bird’s nest built the previous year. Because of their size, Great Horned Owls usurp the nests of large birds such as crows, hawks, and occasionally even Great Blue Herons. The ravens were clearly harassing the owl, thrusting their heads toward it with beaks open. The nest was far away and it was windy so I couldn’t hear any sounds but the ravens were clearly screaming at the owl. With bill threateningly open, the besieged owl would occasionally jerk its head toward one of its taunters, which never quite got within striking range. Then suddenly a second owl flew into view and landed beside its mate. It let the ravens know it meant business, and they seemed to relent a bit. A short while later the ravens apparently lost interest and flew away, perhaps to build a new nest. Before the tree leaves open, take a close look at any large, stick nest that you find. If you see a pair of feathered “horns” sticking up from it, you know that the nest has a new tenant, one that won’t be paying any rent! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca

the brewery to treat their production effluent on-site. This, Rieux said, is a brewery-specific technology that is completely environmentally friendly and very new. “I’m super stoked about it,” Rieux said, adding that Cartwright Springs is an industry leader for using that type of effluent system. Rieux said he was also excited to share with the newspaper news of a project that Cartwright Springs is working on to be released this spring. While he didn’t want to give away too many details just yet, he said that the brewery is partnering with one of Pakenham’s most well known businesses to create a new, unique product for the whole family. “We wanted to do something original,” Rieux said, “and I think we’ve done that.” Cartwright Springs will release more details this spring.

Tours involve more than just seeing where the brews are made; Rieux said that participants get to taste the beer in various stages of production as well as smell and taste the hops and grains. Rieux said the brewery has some new projects this year to share with their fans, like their off-site service for events such as weddings and parties. Cartwright Springs is now available for hire for off-site events, where they bring portable taps to serve pints of fresh beer to guests. “People prefer that over serving cans or bottles,” he said. “The beer just tastes better, so we wanted to offer that.” Speaking of canned beer, Rieux said that the brewery is also looking into creating a canned option for their brews. Currently, Cartwright Springs beer is only available on tap or in their one-litre glass bottles. Researching a canned option, Rieux said, could create a wider market for their brews. In 2016, Cartwright Springs will also continue to test their state-ofthe-art effluent system that allows

Pakenham’s Cartwright Springs Brewery has big plans on the horizon for the new year. Since they officially opened their doors to the public in July 2015, Mississippi Mills’ first and only craft beer brewery has expanded its operations to include several new avenues to support their love of beer. With just over six months under their belts, the company has exceeded expectations and has set its sights on an even bigger 2016. “We’re really happy with the way things have been going so far,” said Andre Rieux, the company’s founder. “We’re ready now to do even more.” Cartwright Springs Brewery is Pakenham’s first local brewery, crafting beers from natural spring water found on site. Their brews have proven popular with craft beer lovers near and far, allowing Rieux and his team to create a sizeable line-up of different varieties to suit every palate. “Every day is a brew day here,” Rieux said. “We’re always busy making new brews and batches of the best sellers.”
Cartwright Springs currently has a collection of six unique brews available for purchase at their 239 Deer Run Rd. location in Pakenham, and three that are sold out. #StuStrong movement unites cancer-patient supporters In February 2016, ‘Stuntman’ Stu Schwartz was diagnosed with Leukemia and began his treatment at The Ottawa Hospital. The diagnosis was one that shocked the MAJIC 100 Morning Show Host and Ottawa Senators PA Announcer. “Being told you have cancer is never something you expect,” said the 41-year-old. “I was shocked, sad and angry. Though once the initial feelings passed, I became determined – determined to come out victorious and beat this,” said Stu. The news of Stu’s diagnosis, which he shared via his Facebook and Twitter accounts, quickly spread throughout the community. Within hours, the father of two had inspired the #StuStrong movement. “Once again we have been reminded of the power of the Ottawa community. When Stu shared his diagnosis, our city responded in an overwhelmingly positive way with hundreds of people coming forward asking how they can help those diagnosed with cancer,” said Richard Gray, Vice-President and General Manager of Bell Media Ottawa. That support came from all those Stu connected with: listeners, colleagues, the Sens Army and the community at large. “It quickly became apparent that we needed to help Stu streamline the #StuStrong movement and
assist him in directing all efforts to the area of the Hospital that meant the most to him: leukemia and stem cell research,” said Tim Kluke, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. “It was important to Stu, to know the community could support the hospital where he was receiving his care.” A partnership between The Ottawa Hospital, Bell Media, the Ottawa Senators and the Ottawa Senators Foundation quickly evolved. SENATORS GAME
The Senators will be fully engaged in their support of #StuStrong, with a number of initiatives, one of which will be a special game night on March 22 that will target awareness and raise funds for leukemia and stem cell research at The Ottawa Hospital. “Cancer touches all of us. The Senators hockey family is all too aware of this difficult and challenging reality,” said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “I’ve known Stu for more than a decade and he has been there time and time again to help us with so many community and charitable initiatives. From my annual Melnyk Skate for Kids, to the Sens Soirée, to No More Bullies – Stu has been there to help everyone in our community. Now, it’s our turn to help Stu, his family and his fight against Leukemia. Stu’s
determination and overwhelmingly positive attitude is an inspiring reminder that cancer can be beaten.” The Ottawa Hospital Foundation has created a dedicated web page for the #StuStrong movement. All known community initiatives, including those organized by The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, the Ottawa Senators and the Ottawa Senators Foundation will be listed. “I want this to be an honest journey. So many people have been through this before and I know I’m certainly not the last of the warriors. I want to help rally this community to support all those undergoing cancer treatment at The Ottawa Hospital,” said Stu. “I hope my blogs, positive attitude and determination will help others who are taking on their own battle with cancer.” To find out more about how you can get involved visit ohfoundation.ca or StuStrong.ca.

Dog owner warns of porcupine dangers after pet dies Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Living in the country can be dangerous, especially for man’s best friend. Sadly, Lois Wennekes’ beloved cocker spaniel Lucas learned the hard way the dangers that lurk inside dark caves. “I want to make people aware that dogs smell everything and you should be aware of other animals,” she said. Weenekes, who lives on River Road, took her sixyear-old dog on a walk on Jan. 28 and he wandered off to investigate something. “Sometimes he goes off and I call him back,” Weenekes explains. She looked for him for five hours and couldn’t find Lucas. The next day her landlord Mike Welsh came out to help and then their other dog, Danny, a poodle mix, followed a path to the end of the hillside. “It was little caves, three of them in a row,” said Weenekes.
“I couldn’t see him, but I got a stick and poked around. He was in the cave with a porcupine and he couldn’t move.” She then called 911; the Horton Fire Department chief Randy Corbin and a member of the Ontario Provincial Police responded. “They took so much time trying to get him out.” Const. Chris Triemstra from the Renfrew detachment laid on the ground to help rescue him. “I want to acknowledge his wonderful dedication in rescuing our dog,” said Weenekes. “He even came the next morning to check, that’s how great of an officer he is, we are so thankful for him.” They took Lucas to Pinnacle Animal Hospital where they found 2,000 quills had punctured his body. “They said they had never seen a case like this. The needles had punctured his lungs.” After three hours at the hospital the dog succumbed to his injuries. “They were so great, I couldn’t believe how helpful
they were,” said Weenekes. “Losing a cherished pet can be devastating. The special bond between Lucas and the Wennekes family was clear, which made this an extremely heartbreaking and tragic outcome,” said Dr. Heather Donohue, in an email. “(Our) staff at the Pinnacle Animal Hospital did everything possible to save Lucas, but he succumbed to his severe injuries. We are deeply saddened by his passing and our sympathies go out to the Wennekes family.” Donohue says porcupines do not hibernate but spend more time near their den in cold weather. “Contrary to what some believe; they do not shoot their quills, but they can be released easily when in contact with another animal,” said Donohue. “Many people underestimate the seriousness of porcupine quills. Not only are they painful for your pet but they can penetrate deeply to cause infections, abscesses or damage to internal organs.”
The Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce In conjunction with The Town of Arnprior And The Township of McNab Braeside Invite you to celebrate The 12th Annual Business Achievement Awards Gala Reception
Donohue provided the following information on what to do if your dog gets quilled: • Restrain your dog, be cautious as the quills will be sharp. Prevent rubbing or pawing the quills as this can worsen injuries; • Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Sedation or anesthesia is often needed to remove quills safely; • Do not attempt to remove the quills. They often break and improper technique can drive quills deeper into the tissues and cause further damage. Quills are often located in the mouth and it can be dangerous to remove them safely; • Do not cut or crush the quills, it is a myth that this is helpful. It actually makes them more difficult to remove; • Do not leave the quills to work their way out. Tiny barbs on the quills embed them in the skin and the movement of your pet can cause them to penetrate more deeply; • Do not give any medicaSUBMITTED tions without speaking to Cocker spaniel Lucas recently succumbed to his injuyour veterinarian. ries after challenging a porcupine in its den.

Gypsy Lane fire consumes house and vehicles Jessica Cunha
jessica.cunha@metroland.com
Three people escaped a house fire at 117 Gypsy Lane during the afternoon of Sunday, March 6. The fire, which began in the garage of the single family home off Old Hwy. 17 along the Mississippi River, quickly spread to the rest of the house as well as two vehicles parked outside, said Ottawa fire spokeswoman Danielle Cardinal. “Everyone was safely outside when our crews arrived,” she said, adding there were no injuries, no smoke inhalations or burns for either the occupants or firefighters. Multiple 911 callers reported the fire and responding fire crews could see smoke before arriving on scene around 4:40 p.m. Firefighters “established a defensive attack” and fought the flames from the outside. District 8 sector Chief Todd Horricks tweeted that firefighters were working on overhaul and the fire was under control around 6 p.m. A fire investigator attended the scene and a cause for the fire was undetermined, said Cardinal. The fire wasn’t considered suspicious, how-

The investigator did determine an estimated $400,000 in damages, she said. EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Keeping driveways clear of
snow in the winter is crucial for responding emergency vehicles. Although no one expects to have to call 911, emergencies happen, said Cardinal. “What we’re seeing with rural fires, people sometimes don’t clear their laneway wid-
er than their own vehicles,” she said. This makes it more difficult for emergency vehicles to get close to a house and for crews to set up. “We want to make sure lanes are being cleared so we can access them,” she said. Another factor that can
add crucial minutes to response times is improperly marked house lots. Address markers buried in snow, knocked over or missing can make it hard for emergency responders to locate a home. Having the house number visible “makes responses a bit
quicker,” said Cardinal. Cardinal added she wanted to thank the people who call 911, and stay on the line and at the scene to assist emergency responders. “It’s a help us help you situation,” she said. “It’s a big help.”

St. Patrick’s luncheon at St Paul’s Anglican church Renfrew is designed to honour one of the world’s most favourite saints. Why is St. Patrick of Ireland one of the world’s most popular saints you ask? Well let’s learn a bit about him to see if we can figure this out.. It was an act of defiance that changed the course of a nation. Patrick lit a fire in pagan fifth century Ireland, ushering Christianity into the country. So how does lighting a fire first make one a saint, two make one popular? Who was this man who became the patron saint of Ireland? Ireland was a beautiful island shrouded in terrible darkness. Warlords and druids ruled the land. Patrick was born into a Christian family. His father was a deacon, his grandfather a priest. But Patrick, from an early age, didn’t have any serious interest in religion. At that time, he was practically an atheist. When he was 14 or so, he was captured by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and in so doing he wrote: “The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that,
in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain.”
While we can imagine what all may have taken place, Patrick explained that he wasn’t a threat. On the contrary he was bringing the new light, the light of Christ, the Saviour of the world, the Light of the world. When he was 20, he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family. Later Patrick saw another vision which he described this way: “I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read
the heading: ‘The Voice of the Irish.’ As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: ‘We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.’” Patrick studied and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland by the Catholic church. When he arrive he found that he had arrived in an Ireland of tribalism, an Ireland of war, an Ireland of suspicion, an Ireland of violence and death. He arrived in this Ireland as a virtual stranger to this country of warring factions under control of the druids and pagan kings. It was an act of defiance that changed the course of a nation. Patrick lit a fire in pagan fifth century Ireland, ushering Christianity into the country. As a part of the annual seasonal change to spring the pagan worship of the seasons into summer, a fire would be lit, and it was the only light allowed and the fire was on the hill of Tara. No other lights were allowed at all in Ireland. On the hill of Slane, Patrick -in direct defiance of the high king of Tara - lit a forbidden fire. He was summoned before the king. While
we can imagine what all may have taken place, Patrick explained that he wasn’t a threat. On the contrary he was bringing the new light, the light of Christ, the Saviour of the world, the Light of the world. He often used symbolism such as shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick’s message. He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone. Everyone is invited to learn more about this country through traditional Irish foods and music on March 13 at noon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church corner of Lisgar and Patrick. Be sure to wear your green. Tickets $10 at the door.

Landowners to host Galilee offers retreats, interfaith workshops meeting on ‘dangers’ of Bill 100 Arnprior’s Galilee Centre has released a list of retreats and workshops being held there this year. In a news release announcing the offerings, the Galilee Centre is called “a spiritual oasis away from our busy lives,” providing an environment that allows people to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect. “We offer a unique Valley atmosphere with comfortable accommodations, home cooked meals, free parking, free Wi-Fi and accessibility. A place of wonder, beauty, adventure with a deep sense of home. A world away from the city.” The venue is “ideal” for personal retreats, group or corporate gatherings, workshops, board meetings, conferences, religious and interfaith retreats, family reunions, social outings, and other special events. Groups come back year after year to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to experience a life-changing encounter at Galilee. As John Heney put it: “Driving up the laneway approaching Galilee Centre, one can feel how the legacy of renewal is being faithfully continued to this day.”

The Renfrew County chapter of the Ontario Landowners Association is hosting a public meeting this Friday, March 11 in Renfrew on its controversial opposition to provincial bills 100 and 118. Landowner groups around the province have been speaking out again the Ontario Trails Act (Bill 100), claiming it threatens property-owners rights. However, recreation organizations, including snowmobile groups, have maintained that the concern is overblown. At Friday’s meeting at the RCAF Wing at 7 p.m., Ontario Landowners Association researcher Elizabeth Marshall will speak on the “dangers” of Bill 100 and Bill 118, the Great Lakes Shoreline Right of Passage. She insists the two bills that are about to be passed in the Ontario Legislature “may seriously affect our private property rights …. here in Renfrew County.” She will share advice on how landowners can safely allow recreation clubs to cross their property without losing their rights. She will also explain what the Great Lakes legislation could mean to Renfrew County residents. Also speaking at the meeting will be a member of the Canadian Justice Review Board. A release by Renfrew-Pembroke-Nipissing Landowners Association president Donna Burns announcing the meeting explains that the Ontario Trails Act (Bill 100) has major issues of concern that involve recreation trails that private property owners have allowed for years for such uses as snowmobiling, atving hiking, walking and horse-riding.
Various groups are accessing the centre for such gatherings as yoga and silent retreats of no denomination, Buddhist retreats and art, writing, and mindfulness workshops. For more information, visit www.galileecentre.com or call Debbie at 613-623-4242, ext. 21, or email info@galileecentre.com for more information. Above and beyond the events listed, there is focused Galilee spring and summer Christian-based programming, interfaith workshops and retreats to choose from: • Lenten Guided Silent Retreat – facilitator Susan Kehoe - March 16, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Lenten day in silence, group prayer and meditation. Cost $50. • Soulful Stitching – Creative Discovery of Spring – facilitators Ann Coulas and Cathy Britton - April 15-17. Quilting and fabric art retreat – participants will explore their creative spirits in harmony with their spiritual path. Cost $275. • Let The Transformation Begin – full day meditations – facilitator Dorothy Allemang - April 6 or 23, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meditations to move out of mental and physical activity
Srs. A. Taylor, L. Germain, M.C. Kelley – seven-day Aug. 5-10 (cost $625); five-day Aug. 5-10 (cost $475), three-day Aug. 5-7 (cost $300). Directed Retreat in an environment of silence, accompanied daily by a spiritual director, discerning the ways of God through prayer, facilitating the journey along the path that God is revealing. • Galilee Experience in Discernment Silence and Prayer – facilitators Fr. J. Roy Boucher and Mary Wehner – Aug. 1921. To grow in one’s understanding of discernment as “a way of life” and to nourish and foster personal and communal growth in holiness. Cost $300.

Arnprior skier earns a bronze medal Anne Lefebvre
Calabogie Ski Racing Club
Provincials and championships are right around the corner for members of the Calabogie Ski Racing Club. The littlest racers, the U10s, rounded off their three-race season with a Giant Slalom at Calabogie Peaks Feb. 14. With a 110-m vertical drop, the course was both challenging and fun. Thomas Carnahan (Ottawa) was the victor, speeding his way to gold. Philip Lungu (Ottawa) was hot on his heels, ultimately earning the bronze medal. Finley Fletcher (Calabogie) and Riley Cotter (Ottawa) stayed tight, finishing 14th and 15th, their times a mere 13-hundredths of a second apart. Jackson Kunstadt-Landon (Stittsville) sped to 23rd, while Matthew Ivay (Ottawa) finished 28th, and Ben Gerein (Carp) zoomed to 31st. Luke Gerein (Carp) performed some gymnastics, sliding out at top speed twice and bouncing back up, but despite his heroics he faced disqualification. Michael Atherton’s (Ottawa) speed also got the best of him as he too was DSQed. Next up for these speed demons are championships March 7-8. The U12 racers also skied their last races Feb. 7, a Panel Slalom (PSL) and Kinder Kombi (KK) at Calabogie Peaks, and Feb. 14 a slalom at Mont Cascades. Highlights for the boys include Noah Matthews (Calabogie) earning a 4th-place ribbon in the Kinder Kombi, Stefan Martincevic (Kanata) splitting the field in half with two 30th places in the KK and PSL, Ayden Gropp (Kanata) speeding to 38th in the PSL, and Kaylum Whelan (Barrhaven) working his way around the gates for a 43rd in the PSL. Top finishes for the girls include a bronze medal for Louise Stonham (Arnprior) in the PSL, and a 10th for Carly Alexander (Carp) and a 24th for Tori Cotter (Ottawa) in the same race. Kate Keuninckx (Perth) pulled off a season-best 20th in the Kinder Kombi, while Nicole Duff (Pembroke), Marissa Cannon (Ottawa), and Rachel Ivay (Ottawa) weren’t far behind in 25th, 26th, and 29th. Meanwhile, the Slalom was Sarah McKittrick’s (Kanata) race – she pulled off a 53rd. The U18s and U16s wrapped up a rainy Speed Camp at Mont Ste. Marie Feb. 3-5, followed by the Art Tommy Memorial Super Combined race Feb. 6-7. A Super Combined features a Super G race in the morning followed by a slalom in the afternoon. The times are then combined for an overall result. In order to race Super G, athletes must train at speed camp beforehand to learn the course, as during this wide-open race, skiers may attain speeds upwards of 70 km/hr. The Super G run features long turns, steep pitches, and a ramp partway down the course that launches the skiers into the air. It is very thrilling for the racers! On Day One, Lauren Campbell-Brunke (Renfrew) grabbed 7th place, Alyssa Steggall (Stittsville) was 15th, and Eve Yantha (Combermere) rounded off the girls with 20th. On Day Two, Alexa Loudiadis (Ottawa) skied to 3rd place and it was Emma Schreider’s (Kingston) turn for 15th. Jake Yantha (Combermere) snagged a 4th-place ribbon on Day One, while Tarik Hamrouni (Barrhaven) and Nick Caves (Barrhaven) completed the top 10 in 8th and 10th. Sean Swayze (Braeside) was just short in 12th. Jack Alexander (Carp), Connor Allen (Manotick), Liam Maclean (Manotick), and Aiden Keuninckx (Perth) all skied two clean runs to attain 16th, 17th, 21st and 23rd. Tyler Lefebvre (Calabogie), Owen Barr (Carp) and Eric Davidson (Burnstown) all skied fantastic Super G runs, but difficulties in the slalom put them in 33rd, 36th, and 37th. On Day Two, Alex Duff (Pembroke) was the gold medal winner, and shared the podium with brother Sam who placed 3rd. Jack Hamilton (Ottawa) finished a respectable 26th on this day, and Connor Maclean (Manotick) skied two good runs for 29th. The U16s had one final race, a slalom, on Feb. 27. Then, all age groups begin preparing for provincials and championships in March. 34 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, March 10, 2016

Ottawa trips made for happy memories Aunt Vanetta, I thought, looked exactly like the Queen. With a cloud of snow-white hair, the bluest eyes I had ever seen, and so different from Uncle Johnny, I often wondered what they saw in each other. With a bunch of other relatives, she lived at 129 Lyon St., all in separate apartments, and right next door to No. 2 Fire station. Goodness knows where everyone slept, because Aunt Lily and Uncle Dick and their son Richard, lived there too. I know all this because once we got the old Model T Ford in a trade, there was no stopping Mother from taking frequent trips into Ottawa and 129 Lyon St. How I loved to visit Aunt Vanetta and Uncle Johnny. It was said amongst the family that Aunt Vanetta practically lived at the Catholic Church a couple blocks away. Rain or shine, she went to Mass every morning without fail. Family gossip also said Uncle Johnny never dark-

ened the church door! He said Aunt Vanetta went to enough masses to bless the entire length of Lyon Street. If we were lucky enough to be at 129 Lyon St. when she was going off to Mass (she often went in the middle of the day too), we were first treated to a lecture on the importance of being “once a Catholic, always a Catholic”, aimed directly at Mother, which didn’t sit well with Father a staunch Lutheran! It wasn’t above Uncle Johnny, who drove a huge steam roller for the city of Ottawa, to let out a string of swear words, for no reason at all. The only one who
seemed to take offense, or even notice, was Aunt Vanetta. And her little hand would flutter to her chest to make the sign of the cross. When I was alone, I tried to do it too, but I could never remember if you touched your forehead or your heart first. And I thought it was very important to get everything in order, or you’d get it from God! It wasn’t unusual to see Aunt Vanetta off in the parlour alone saying her beads, which I knew were called a rosary, while everyone else was in the kitchen sitting around the big oilcloth covered table. When the beads weren’t being fingered in her hands, they were kept in her spotlessly clean apron pocket. I’m not sure if Aunt Vanetta thought there might be a flicker of hope that one of us from out there in Renfrew County would become Catholic, but one Easter, she presented the five of us children with our own rosary. Moth-
er, once a Catholic, said, “Isn’t that lovely,” and Father vowed to never again darken the door at 129 Lyon St.! Of course, that threat was short-lived. He liked Uncle Johnny, and I often saw him laugh so hard that the tears rolled down his face at the jokes and stories told around that kitchen table. Father smoking his pipe, and Uncle Johnny with a big fat cigar hanging loosely from his mouth. Often the big steam roller was parked in the yard beside the house, and it reeked of tar, and Uncle Johnny would let each of us country kids climb up behind the wheel, which was the biggest steering wheel I had ever seen, and he would start the engine just so that we could pull a rope that hung inside the cab. That tug would set off a horn that my sister Audrey said could probably be heard on the outskirts of Ottawa. And I would think how lucky was my cousin Richard to
live at such a house where there was so much excitement! When it was time to head back to Northcote, I would be very quiet in the Model T and relive all the excitement that swirled around 129 Lyon St. Aunt Vanetta and her strong faith, Uncle Johnny, who, when he talked, could be heard two blocks away, and the various cousins and aunts, all living together under one roof. It was like going to another world. It would be many decades later that I saw 129 Lyon St. leveled to the ground to make way for a many- storied hotel, leaving me with warm and colourful memories of another time and another place. Wes’ super fan Jody Smaggus stood in line two hours before Wes’ Chips opened for the season on a chilly March 1 just to be the first customer of 2016. She took the day off work and drove from her home in Renfrew for 8 a.m. just to get what many deem the best fries in the valley. The super fan considers it a bucket list accomplishment. Growing up in Arnprior, she missed the day or found herself behind others. This time, she contacted the owner for the exact time. She was rewarded with her favourite: well-done fries.

Teachers Lyann deJager and Pam Steele were explaining pulley systems, including the combined fixed and movable one with a comfortable seat for principals and, later, a few students.
