March 17 fire guts Bridge Street apartment in Arnprior DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Fire broke out at a house next to Quality Inn and East Side Mario’s in Arnprior Saturday morning (March 17). Firefighters arrived on scene at about 8 a.m. to see smoke pouring from a window on the main floor of the two-storey structure. Graham Wyatt was in charge of the 15 firefighters and four vehicles

at the 34 Bridge Street fire. “It was a contents fire in an apartment area kitchen,” Wyatt said from the scene. “Cory (Nicholas) is inside investigating.” Wyatt said no one was inside at the time and no injuries were sustained. Firefighters were cleaning up hoses by 9 a.m. Chief Jeff Crawford explained Tuesday that officials believe the cause to be electrical in nature. “The unit where the fire occurred was being

renovated and there was a fridge in there that was plugged in and it appears the fridge compressor had some sort of electrical problem and that’s where the fire started,” said Crawford. An original damage estimate of around $70,000 is likely closer to $100,000, said the chief. Crawford said no one was living in the affected unit but that a couple in another of the apartments has been displaced. See ELECTRICAL, page 3

He may not have returned home with a medal, but he certainly won the hearts of his many fans and supporters in his hometown of Arnprior and beyond. Paralympic snowboarder JohnLeslie finished seventh in snowboard cross and eighth in banked slalom at the 2018 games in PyeongChang Korea. “Overall, I couldn’t be happier with my experience at the games. I believe not only is my personal riding headed in the right direction but para snowboarding as a whole. Some heads were turned!” said Leslie. “Results are a tough one. Obviously I wanted to be walking away with medals in each category. I wasn’t disappointed with my riding and I believe the medalists very much deserve their medals.” More than 70 people, including family members, surprised Leslie with a virtual face-to-face from Arnprior through Canadian Tire’s Red Door program.

NOTICE OF PROJECT INITIATION MUNICIPALITY OF MISSISSIPPI MILLS Schedule ‘B’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment

POTABLE WATER STORAGE

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills (Municipality) is initiating a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to assess alternative potable water storage solutions for the Almonte Ward, building upon recommendations from the related Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Master Plan (Almonte Ward) completed in 2012, and updated in 2018. The project is being carried out within the requirements for a Schedule ‘B’ project under the Terms of the Municipal Class EA process, which is approved under the Environmental Assessment Act. The Almonte Ward’s existing drinking water supply system consists of five groundwater wells, an elevated potable water storage tank and a distribution system. The 2018 Master Plan Update identified a short-term potable water storage deficit that is anticipated to increase over time as the Almonte Ward grows. As such, various alternatives for additional storage will be assessed throughout the Class EA process. As part of the Class EA process, public comment during the evaluation of alternative solutions will be requested. The Municipality is planning to conduct one public information session during the course of the study. Notice of the session will be provided in advance. Project information will also be available to the public at the municipal office and the municipal website, www.mississippimills.ca. We are interested in hearing any comments or concerns that you may have about this project. A public database of comments will be maintained and, with the exception of personal information, included in the study documentation that will be made available for public review. Parties interested in providing input or that wish to obtain additional information at this stage of the study are asked to submit comments in writing to: Municipality of Mississippi Mills: Potable Water Storage Class EA c/o J.L. Electrical fire caused about $100,000 in damage: fire chief Continued from front

“There was a lot of smoke damage and that gets into clothes and such,” he said, adding he believes the couple did have insurance on the contents of their unit. He is pleased with the work of the firefighters. “It was an excellent response. They were there very quickly they were able to do a size-up and assess the situation very quickly,” said Crawford. “They did an aggressive interior tack, which saved the building.”

It was a busy Saturday for the fire department. They had another call Saturday evening at Island View Retirement Suites. “It turned out to be a broken radiator steam pipe in one of the rooms,” said Crawford. “There were no injuries but quite a bit of excitement for the folks living there.” Firefighters made quick work of the call. “We are able to again size that up and do a quick intervention,” said the chief. “We were up to the room quickly and able to de-

Arnprior Fire Department partners to share fire safety packages TOWN OF ARNPRIOR

In the fall of 2017 the Arnprior Fire Department partnered with Community Safety Net, to develop and distribute a Fire Safety — Smart Choices for Life family resources package to educate and protect young people in our com-

munity. Community Partners were approached to fund these fire safety resources and due to the generous support of the community $4,095 was raised to allow for children in our community to receive a “Fire Safety” manual and DVD free of charge.

These resources will provide children in our protection area with the essential knowledge to prevent fires and escape safely while guiding parents in keeping their home and family firesafe. Although the Arnprior Fire Department runs an extremely proactive public education program in local schools it is always a challenge to extend fire safety initiatives beyond the classroom and into the home. With the community partners support we are pleased to announce that we will be able to complete this always challenging objective by providing take-home, quality public education materials that capture the imagination and engage the participants. As always the children will learn the essential

skills in the classroom with our fire prevention team, and now be provided with Fire Safety — Smart Choices for Life family resources package which contains a fact book and interactive DVD to review and complete with their parents at home. Once reviewed, children can complete a fire safety quiz on the interactive DVD with the incentive to win prizes on the Community Safety Net website. It is our expectation that through combining hands on learning in the classroom with reinforcement of lessons learned in the home children and their caregivers will learn the skills necessary to stay fire safe. Thank you to all of our community partners for their support.

Distracted driving campaign results Fuelling your desire to run your own business

The numbers are in for the week long distracted driving campaign and they show that many drivers continue to disregard the law and the safety of other road users. In the Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment area officers laid 43 charges during the seven day campaign. If you feel you have to use your phone while driving, it must be hands-free. Arnprior reveals roadwork plan for this summer Road rehab budget set at $371,000 DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Several roads in Arnprior will benefit from council’s decision to spend an additional $200,000 on repairs this summer. During budget discussions earlier this year, councillors made it known to staff that fixing roads in town is a priority. So staff bumped up the “rolling road rehabilitation” budget to $371,000. Based on the 2014 Pavement Condition Index, the following will be done: • Gary Crescent (second half from 56 Gary to Allan) will see $25,000 worth of work done; • Allan Drive (from Edey to Gary) will get $32,000; • Edey Street (from school parking lot to Landrigan) will get $63,000; • Winners Circle (from Daniel to No Frills first entrance) will get $40,000. Most will see a shave and pave of 50 millimetres of asphalt, sidewalk patches, and iron adjustments. In some areas pooling water is causing damage; proper drainage should prolong life. Gary Crescent will also see about $200,000 spent on it for resurfacing half the road.

Staff expect to get a surplus $100,000 back from the downtown revitalization project. That opens the door for at least one of the next four on the priority list: • Michael Street (from Daniel to Thomas) could see $70,000; • Rock Lane (from Daniel to Russell) $40,000; • Atkinson Street (from Daniel to Russell) $60,000; • Jack Crescent (from Madawaska to Wolff) $120,000. Rather than including the bottom three, staff suggested bumping up the budget used for filling in potholes and sidewalk cracks. Using $30,000 toward small patches should prolong the life of several roads, so the theory goes. Mayor David Reid endorsed the small-patch plan. He also mentioned liking that council doesn’t decide which roads to do; staff has the empirical evidence to do so. And for roads not on the list but appearing in very bad shape, they may need underground pipes replaced, which is a much greater cost that will be confronted in future budgets. “There’s no point resurfacing if infrastructure work needs to be done in a few years,” Reid said.

Eyes on the road It is the leading cause of death on Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) patrolled roads in Ontario. Distracted driving is a form of impaired driving. A driver’s judgment is compromised when they are not fully focused on the road. During the March 12-18 provincewide distracted driving campaign, officers from the Renfrew detachment of the OPP laid 43 charges. Texting is among the most dangerous activities to carry out while driving, but distracted driving refers to all forms of distracted or inattentive driving, says an OPP press release. “Other examples include such things as talking on the phone, eating and drinking, personal grooming and tending to children in the vehicle,” says the release. During the campaign, officers targeted these and any other forms of distraction they observed as impairing a motorist’s driving ability. Electronic device use has become more prevalent in the past years and has been the cause of numerous motor vehicle collisions, say police. “It is against the law to operate hand-held communication and electronic entertainment devices while

you are driving, or to view display screens unrelated to your driving. Examples of hand-held devices include: iPods, GPS, cell phones, laptops and DVD players. “Drivers are permitted to use any device that they do not touch, hold or manipulate while driving,” say police. “For example, drivers can use a cell phone if they are using a ‘handsfree’ function, but actions such as dialing or scrolling through contacts is not allowed when driving.” Additionally, drivers can use a GPS, provided it is mounted and they have input the information prior to driving. Media players are also allowed, but the playlist must be activated before driving. “Simply, if the device causes you to focus on it when driving, then you are driving distracted,” say the OPP. Drivers who endanger others because of any distraction can be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act or even with Dangerous Driving, under the Criminal Code of Canada. So drive safely and keep your focus on the road. Please, put down the phone and leave it alone.

‘Me Too’ a hopeful sign, but women still suffer from violence To the editor:

Earlier this month, we celebrated International Women’s Day. It was a time to reflect on the improvements in women’s lives as well as look at the issues which still need to be addressed, especially for women of colour and those living in disadvantaged situations. A hopeful sign is the Me Too movement participants speaking up and declaring that they will not tolerate abuse perpetrated on them by men in positions of power. While continuance of harassment and exploitation is unques-

tionably unacceptable, it is important, however, to look at the manner in which the issue is addressed. To use any method that is disrespectful, unaccountable and unjust perpetuates the cycle of abuse. In anticipation that we are trying to soften the response towards alleged perpetrators, we feel we are calling women to respond with integrity and to not retaliate in like to the abuse that is the basis of complaints. As members of the Canadian Peace Initiative we are committed to nonviolent forms of addressing acts of violence.

Are we addressing claims of abuse in a respectful nonviolent way? For resolution of these issues, we believe we need to follow the path of an assertive, respectful and caring process leading to a resolution. Responding by attacking usually leads to resentment, resistance and retaliation. So much different information is being presented in the media and everyone is putting their own spin on it. Many of the alleged perpetrators are being judged in the court of public opinion. It is a significant and positive

step that women (and some men as well) are no longer keeping silent about unacceptable, abusive behaviour. Let’s continue the process by proceeding with these allegations in a constructive, fair, transparent and publicly accountable manner. Theft, drug charges for shoplifters in Arnprior On Friday, March 16, two males entered The Source in Arnprior and purchased an item, says a press release from the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). As they were leaving the store they each picked up several items, concealed them and left the store without paying. Staff discovered the thefts, reviewed security footage and contacted the Ontario Provincial Police. Const. Erin Densmore investigated the theft. The two males were known to the officer. Both males were arrested and charged. Most of the stolen property was recovered. Both males had a quantity of drugs in their possession when they were arrested. Two males from Arnprior, aged 31 and 50, are charged with theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, and possession of a schedule 1 drug. The 31-year-old is also facing charges of possession of a schedule 2 drug, and two counts of breach of probation. They were each released from custody on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on May 2.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) continues to receive reports of emails, text messages and telephone calls related to tax scams. Tax scams can involve the following: Fraudsters are calling consumers impersonating the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and claiming that a recent audit has identified discrepancies from past filed taxes. Repayment is required immediately. Fraudsters threaten consumers that failure to pay will result in additional fees, jail time and/or deportation. Fraudsters may request payment via money service business, pre-paid cards / gift cards (iTunes) or bitcoin Consumers receive an email or text message indicating a refund is pending from the CRA. The email includes a link that directs consumers to a website that looks like the actual CRA. Consumers are asked to fill in their personal information such as Social Insurance Number (SIN), Date of Birth (DOB) and banking information before receiving the refund (email money transfer). Victims who input their personal information are subject to identity fraud. No refund is ever issued.

PSW, home care client complaints brought to Champlain LHIN To the editor:

This is a follow-up to my letter published in local newspapers and on Facebook a few weeks ago. I feel it is needful to inform home care clients and personal support workers (PSWs) that I am continuing to bring forward the crisis we are facing in home care in Ontario. I trust you have been able to read my first letter and a local reporter’s articles in the Renfrew Mercury and Arnprior Chronicle Guide. You can go to insideottawavalley. com (search Paramed) to see these articles. I have written to the Ontario Health Minister again to express our concerns, I have also filed a complaint with the Patient Ombudsman of Ontario and MPP John Yakabuski’s office has been bringing forth these issues to both Champlain LHIN and to

the Health Minister’s office. Recently I had the privilege of having a two-hour positive meeting in my home with the Vice President, Home & Community Care of Champlain LHIN. Using your e-mails I was able to bring before her the issues that many clients are facing and the importance for change. One result of this meeting is that I am now going to be able to bring your complaints and comments directly to the Vice President and so I forwarded a number of your e-mails to help her understand what is happening to both clients and PSWs. One of the questions she asked me during our meeting was, in my opinion, why are so many PSW’s leaving home care? So I shared what I have been hearing from you.

update each other and discuss these challenges. I have been told that there will be a new program announced in a few weeks which will meet the needs of some clients but it will not meet the needs of many clients so there is still much work to do. When your responses started coming in from my first letter I quickly learned that many clients and caregivers were in desperate need of help and in some of these cases I have reached out to visit with you in your homes to hopefully be able to encourage and see if there might be some way you can be helped. I have now been asked by the VP to forward urgent cases that I become aware of to her and she will personally work to find a solution to your situation. I will continue to reach out and do home visits, however I need to

A big thank-you to Irene Robillard, Burnstown Women’s Institute, Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) Canada 150 chair, who put the project together. “At an age when volunteerism among young people is declining and access to information is increasing rapidly due to the internet, the original focus of the Women’s Institute (WI) branches to bring women together for educational opportunities and friendship

However, I believe that we need to inspire younger women to join the WI in order to keep such an important rural organization active. “There is and always will be a role for women to improve rural life, to give back to our communities, and to keep traditions alive,” said Sara MacKenzie, Calabogie WI, Renfrew South District. For some animals, life is a real ball MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

Identifying plants in winter can be challenging. Coniferous trees are easy for they retain their needles all winter but deciduous trees are another story. Yet, with the aid of a good field guide, you can figure out the identity of most by looking at their bark, twig, and bud structures. Winter wildflowers are considerably more difficult to pin a name on but the shape of their seed heads can offer clues. However, there is one wildflower that even though it belongs to a challenging group, can be identified at a glance. That wildflower is the late goldenrod (Solidago altissima). Goldenrods are beautiful yellow wildflowers that bloom from August into early October. There are a number of goldenrods locally but only one species contains a feature that can be seen from some distance. That feature, however, is not the flower head nor is it a feature of its leaves. It is a round ball that appears about halfway up the goldenrod’s stem. That ball is the winter home for a very unusual insect, the goldenrod gall fly. In late summer, before the goldenrod’s leaves open, a female goldenrod gall fly (Eurosta solidaginis) seeks out a late goldenrod and lays an egg beside a leaf bud in the stem’s tip. After hatching, the tiny grub burrows its

Michael Runtz

The hole in this Goldenrod Gall reveals that a Downy Woodpecker exhumed its larval content. way into the stem and begins feeding. Either in response to growth hormones sent to that area by the plant or contained in the grub’s saliva (this is still unknown), the stem swells around the grub, creating the dis-

tinctive round structure called a gall. The grub contentedly feeds on the tissue inside the gall through summer into fall. Before the cold temperatures arrive, it chews an exit hole from its central chamber to, but not through, the outer skin of the gall, and then goes dormant. When sub-zero temperatures arrive, much of the water inside the little grub freezes, but as in other freeze-tolerant animals such as hatchling painted turtles, and spring peepers, the ice forms not inside the cells of the body tissues but between them. When spring arrives, the grub comes back to life and pupates. After a couple of weeks, the adult fly emerges from the pupa case and crawls up its exit tunnel. When it reaches the skin blocking its way out of the gall, a “balloon” pops out of its head and pushes through the skin, opening the door to freedom. But, as found in all of nature’s strategies, there are drawbacks to living in a gall. A few species of parasitoid wasps use their long ovipositor to penetrate a gall and lay an egg on its occupant. Upon hatching, the wasp grub eats the fly grub. Downy woodpeckers and black-capped chickadees use their bills to exhume the grubs in winter. Remarkably, the wasps attack smaller galls while the birds call on larger galls. Galls intermediate in size seem to the safest for the fly grubs. With so many problems facing the goldenrod gall fly larvae, it’s clear that life inside a ball is not always a ball! The nature email is mruntz@start.caFILL

SAFETY TIPS

Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms. If a fire starts in your home while you are asleep, you want to know about it immediately. Some homes are equipped with electrically connected smoke alarms that may not work when the power is out. Make sure your home has a batteryoperated smoke alarm on every level.

Scrumptious pancakes April 11 If you are a fan of homemade pancakes then you are going to love the ones prepared and cooked by Wendy Crego, director of culinary services at Island View Retirement Suites. “We can personally guarantee it,” says Liz Wall, development co-ordinator for Arnprior Braeside McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH). “Plan now to give these pancakes a try on Wednesday, April 11 while supporting ABMSH, as hosted and sponsored by the folks of Island View Retirement Suites, 30 Jack Crescent, Arnprior.” Organizers urge you to invite your friends, family and neighbours to join you for a delicious breakfast while supporting a great cause.

The first pancakes, with all the trimmings and topped off with real maple syrup, will be served starting at 8 a.m. (downstairs) with the last customers served by 10 a.m. Cost is $10 for all you can eat, with 100 per cent of all raised from the event to be donated to ABMSH and the 23 programs the agency provides seniors and those with special needs. Last year there was a recorded 123 pancakes eaten. “Help us increase the number for 2018,” says Wall. RSVP to Wendy Knechtel, community relations director, of Island View at 613-622-0002, ext. 1 or ABMSH, 613-623-7981 by Monday, April 9, to register for the event.

Bailey Stonham of Arnprior is set to hit the slopes March 20 to 24 for the provincial finals at Calabogie Peaks Resort.

L’ARCHE ARNPRIOR

Denise Zohr/ Submitted

Calabogie to host alpine skiing finals Calabogie Ski Racing Club, in conjunction with Calabogie Peaks Resort, will be hosting the U16 Ontario Cup Finals, March 20-24. This event will bring Ontario’s best 14-, 15- and 16-year-old competitive alpine racers to Calabogie to compete in slalom, dual slalom, giant slalom and super G. Athletes who place well here will move on to the Eastern North American finals later in the month. Calabogie Ski Racing Club and the Ottawa Valley will be well represented by Bailey Stonham of Arnprior, Sam Alexander (Carp), Jack Carnahan (Kanata), James Gaffney (Deep Riv-

er), Carson Lefebvre (Calabogie), Wesley Matthews (Springtown), Lucas Miller (Kingston), Jeremy Van Grunsven (Odessa) and Lucas Zohr (Golden Lake). The speed event, super G, will run on Tuesday, followed by ladies’ giant slalom on Wednesday and men’s giant slalom on Thursday. Friday will be slalom. The don’t-miss-it event, dual slalom, where athletes race head to head down parallel courses, with jumps along the way, will run Saturday. The public are welcome to come check out some exciting, high-quality ski racing!

Excitement is building around April 7, L’Arche’s annual bowling fundraiser. There will be five bowling times throughout the day, with room for 20 teams to participate. Each team of four will be matched with one of L’Arche’s all-star bowlers. The day draws to a close with a spaghetti dinner, held in deRenzy hall from 5:30 p.m. on, at which trophies and prizes will be awarded. Last year’s top bowlers were Doug McNulty and Beth van Dusen, both core members at L’Arche Arnprior. If you would like to have the opportunity to bowl with one of our fabulous team players, call 613-623-7323 or drop by the L’Arche office in the Kenwood Corporate Centre to register your team and pick up pledge sheets. Hurry, spaces are filling up quickly! In addition, last year’s top fundraiser was Jonathan Scobie. He is on track this year to surpass that achievement! If you aren’t able to field a team, but would

like to donate to the cause, your pledge will be gratefully received by any L’Arche member! Or you can call the office - we are now able to process both VISA and Mastercard donations by phone. Shawn Gibson, a core member who lives at McLachlin Street home, would like you to know that this year, all of the funds raised will be earmarked to replace their old and unsafe backyard porch and its ramp with a lovely new three-season porch with ramp. He is very much looking forward to having this new updated space so that he can enjoy sitting outside safely and in comfort, surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of nature, even in inclement weather. All of us here at L’Arche Arnprior are most grateful for the continued thoughts and support of our broader community, as well as the many people who have taken us into their hearts. We are blessed to have moved here from the farm in Cloyne 30 years ago, to a place where there are so many more services available, and opportunities to connect and integrate.

Dagenais Construction: We would like to thank everyone whom we have had the pleasure of working for and with for the past 21 years, especially our hard working and dedicated employees past and present. As of April 01, 2018 Dagenais Construction and Aluminum Products Limited will be under new ownership. It was a hard decision to make. Dagenais Construction has been our family business for over 40 years with Ken and Joy founding it and starting what has become a well respected business in the community. We have made many great friends through operating our business over the years. We will very much miss seeing them on a regular basis and having gab sessions at the office with them, but we also look forward to some down time at the lake. We might be seen popping in next door on occasion to see our daughter who is continuing the family business tradition by operating Gary Garage Door for the last five years, and will continue to do so. Darcy and Ashley McIntyre will be the new owners and operate under Dagenais Construction Window and Door. Darcy is no stranger to us, he has worked for us for the last ten years and understands Dagenais Construction stands for high quality and service. We know he will do an excellent job going forward. We wish all the best to Darcy and Ashley, our past customers and employees in the years to come. Sincerely, Tom and Sheila Hyland

COMING EVENTS

March 21st, 2014 I wish heaven had a phone so I could hear your voice again. I thought of you today, but that’s nothing new. I thought about you yesterday, and the days before too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and a photo in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, from which I’ll never part. God has you in his arms and I have you in my heart.

DEADLINE FOR CLASSIFIED ADS

(nee Petroff) Sophie passed away March 12, 2018, after a short illness.

She was predeceased by her husband Jim, parents, Fanny and Stanley, and brother Fred. She is survived by children Kathy, Carol (Doug), Colleen and Dennis (Julie), brother Jack (Gayle) and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved grandsons Andrew, Jeff, Alex, Jackie, Jake, and Stanley who were devoted to their grammy. Mom lived her life with quiet dignity and endless kindness. She taught us all the grace of surrender which is, in the end, the toughest and most meaningful part of living. She had a quiet determination. In a time when women were claiming their rights, our mother went to work to carve out her place in the world. She taught her children the importance of selfreliance. Her friendships with people throughout her life brought comfort and joy to her and to them. She offered a compassionate ear and unrelenting loyalty to those who were special to her. Mom celebrated her 85th birthday on March 5th. She was showered with phone calls, cards, emails, and flowers from caring friends and family in far off places and from those on the street where she lived. Her friendship with her dearest friend, Shirley Trakalo, meant so much in her last months. She had a nightly routine of climbing into bed and calling Shirley to chat about the day’s events. They shared many secrets and formed a mutual admiration society. Mom’s last few weeks were a testament to the way she lived her life. Friends visited or called. Family members who could visit did. Those who couldn’t made sure she knew how much they loved her. Her children honoured her wish to die at home surrounded by their love. Mom was the heart of our family, through life’s ups and downs. It was her love that was our touchstone. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home, 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Friends are invited to a come-and-go tea Saturday March 24, 2018 between 2-4 p.m. at 113 Wolff Crescent, Arnprior. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Arrival of baby pigs an exciting time of year I have always thought the most exciting time on the farm was in late winter or early spring when the new baby pigs arrived. I would stand at the door of the barn and see these little pink bodies appear, perfect miniatures of the big old sow, whose only acknowledgement of this exciting event was a loud snort now and then. She was much more interested in the bucket of mash she was always fed when the delivery was over. Father was the only one allowed near the births. The reason, he said, was the mother would not accept the babies if they were touched by human hands. Always, the piglets seemed to be born on a cold and damp day, and I would shiver in the barn doorway, watching them come one after another. Father said there was always the danger of the little ones dying if they got chilled, and so as each piglet was born, it was lifted gently with a bran bag, Father being especially careful not to let his hands touch the newborn. He would wrap the baby pig in the bag and rush into the house. Mother would be ready for him. The oven door of the old Findlay Oval would be down, and on it was a big fat cushion covered with another bran bag. Behind the stove, which stood out from the wall by a good two feet, would be a wicker hamper, filled with straw, and as Father brought in the next baby, the last one would be moved to the basket. I watched this until all the little pigs had been born and treated to a warming session on the oven door and then transferred to the basket behind the stove, always wrapped in sack, of course, so no hand would touch them. I raced back and forth from the barn with Father, never once laying a finger on a piglet. I adored their little silky pink bodies, and so wanted to hold one. But I was always mindful of Father’s warning that if they were touched, the old sow would abandon them. Mother helped Father move the little piglets from the barn into the kitchen as well ... grown pigs fetched a good dollar, to say nothing of the food they provided to seven hungry mouths on the farm ... a fact I refused to think about. There was much scurrying about as the piglets arrived fast and furiously. Mother and Father were either running in, or out of the kitchen ... moving the little ones to or from the oven door. All I could do was watch. But I wanted to do more. I told Mother I thought I was quite capable of moving the pigs from the oven door to the basket. She said, “No. If you touch them, the mother won’t take them back. You heard your father. You can watch, but you can’t put a finger on them.

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

Besides, I think we are just about out of little pigs.” She was heading back to the barn. I looked at the little pink creature on the oven door, with a black spot on one ear, squirming and trying to burrow into the sack. I thought it was the most precious little animal I had ever seen. And right then and there a thought formed in my mind. So what if the mother pig didn’t want her baby back! Hadn’t I raised a black lamb all by myself ? I tried not to think of the terrible end it came to. I eased closer to the oven door. I swear the little piglet looked right up at me! All reasoning went out the window. I could feel the heat of the Findlay Oval on my face as I bent close to the pillow. And then I did the unthinkable. I reached down and picked up the little silken body and put it up to my face. It burrowed its head into my neck and right then I didn’t care if I was sent to Reform School, which is where we all thought my brother Emerson would end up one day. Mother would be coming through the door any minute, so I quickly parted with the little pig, gently putting it into the basket. “I was sure there was one still on the oven door,” Mother said, as she breezed into the kitchen. I never raised my head from the basket. That night after supper, Father and Everett carried the basket out to the barn, and using the bag, lowered the piglets, one by one, down to the sow. I never took my eyes off the one with the black spot on one ear ... waiting for its rejection. The old sow grunted and fell to her side. The 13 piglets found their nurse, including the one with the black spot on its ear. I didn’t have the courage to tell Father his theory on mother-abandonment didn’t hold water. Nor did I tell him how I knew. Mary Cook is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. She appears as a regular columnist. OPINION

Connected to your community

Cats are the centre of attention and still the purr-fect pet As heads of their households, cats want things their way. That may mean drinking from the faucet or walking across the kitchen table. Cats like to be the centre of attention and they always detect where your attention is centred, whether that be the open pages of the book you are reading or on the keyboard of your computer. Cats, one moment they are cuddling up looking for love and the next they are up and away, tail and nose in air, leaving you thinking “Do they really love me?” However, there are those who swear by the ease and independence of caring for pets of the feline persuasion. Catlovers don’t pussyfoot around - they know the little purr balls

are the cat’s meow. Cats come in many sizes and colors, not to mention a myriad of purr-sonalities. Unlike dogs, cats are far more independent and far more intelligent. Cats, unlike dogs, do not require kitten obedience classes. They are affectionate when they want to be and can be extremely playful. For someone looking for an independent pet that requires very little maintenance, for someone living in an apartment or for someone that finds it hard to get around, a cat could be a great companion. Other than a litter box, food and water, a cat requires nothing more than a place to sit in the sun and let life slowly go by. Cats just like dogs should be spayed or neutered as this will

Pet Talk

IAN STUPP keep your pet from wandering at night and from contributing to an overpopulation of fury felines. Yearly visits to the veterinarian will guarantee that your feline friend is healthy and up-

to-date on its shots. Although I do not believe in letting my pets out alone unsupervised, if you choose to let them roam, then speak to your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention. A break-away collar will prevent your cat from hanging themselves should they get caught on something. For that same reason I do not recommend a flea collar. Speak to your veterinarian about administering flea drops instead. Keep your feline indoors in the dead of winter and in the heat of the summer. Diet is very important to your cat. Not only is being overweight unhealthy for your cat, being overweight can also make it difficult to groom oneself. Usually you will find the back end of an overweight cat to be matted, cover in feces and

smelling from dried urine. Declawing in my opinion is unnecessary. Cats can be trained to be hospitable and with patience can be trained to redirect their feline temptation to destroy your furniture and instead enjoy a scratch post. Over the years I have owned a cat or two and never have I considered getting them declawed. I never lost a couch, carpets or drapes to a cat. Don’t get me wrong I have had the odd scratch here and rip there but nothing that had to be replaced. A water bottle set on spray works like magic at training even the most stubborn feline. Cats can get along with other pets, including birds and can be trained to be sociable around children. You can even fit them with a cat harness and

take them out for walks. Catnip can work wonders at keeping them occupied. It’s amazing to think that something as simple as a piece of string tied to a door knob can provide hours of playtime for your cat. There is nothing like watching a cat play for hours with a tiny piece of paper oblivious to all that is going on in the world. Perhaps we should learn from our feline friends and find time to stop and play with a piece of string attached to a door knob! horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
