Best in the world?
Derek Dunn/Metroland
Vicki Brittle is relatively new to the songwriting business, but she is already competing with the best for an international prize. Her song Cold as Stone was selected among some 17,000 as a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Competitors have included Shania Twain’s songwriter, among many others. Judges this year include Lorde and Ziggy Marley. Winners are revealed in April. See the story on page 4.
Canadian Tire wins zoning change at Arnprior council DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Canadian Tire is over one hurdle facing the redevelopment of its former site in Arnprior. At a March 13 public meeting on the issue, Arnprior council considered the company’s request for additions to the current zoning. It wanted to keep the “shopping centre commercial” status, but add an auto gas bar. The change would allow the current Canadian Tire gas station to move to the opposite side of the parking lot, next to the ravine, a private residence, and the former Press Cafe. Hearing no concerns from the public on hand, council voted for the change — which came as no surprise to Mayor David Reid. “I questioned the need to have to do this in the first place,” he said, accepting that munici-

Calling it the single-largest reduction in electricity in the province’s history, Reid said it couldn’t come quickly enough. “I’ve been concerned for the overall economic well being of Ontario,” he said. The news release details why costs rose, but not where the money will come from to offset the 25 per cent reduction. That has Stack worried. Some councillors raised concerns about noise from a drive through restaurant attached to the gas bar, room for enough parking spaces, and an entrance/exit onto Daniel Street. Arnprior District High School. They are concerned with dog litter on the track and sports field. They suggested the town create a dog park. They are also asking the town to do something about traffic along Ottawa Street. They recommended converting it into a one way. Reid said it was a constructive meeting. The town has long talked of a dog park, but finding the money and appropriate location have proven difficult. Irresponsible dog owners are an ongoing problem. He said turning Ottawa Street into a one-way “may not be realistic” and that historic infrastructure, meaning side-by-side schools, can’t be changed. However, he has brought the issues to an advisory committee of residents and councillors for consideration.

Municipalities oppose septic rule changes Continued from page 2
Only a handful of town residents use septic tanks on their property, but council is speaking out on their behalf while supporting a neighbourhood whose every resident will be affected by provincial ministry proposal. The Township of McNab/Braeside won the town’s support in opposing a proposed change to a section of the building code. It would require a mandatory five-year septic tank pump out and records retention by the owner. Municipalities administer and enforce the change, proposed by the

Municipal tax money to help improve the former Mather Insurance building at 159 John Street N. - it will become The Vintage Crate, an upscale antiques shop - ran into some controversy at a council meeting. It was agreed to give the owners a $5,000 grant, but only after at least two members questioned the fairness. Coun. Lynn Grinstead said the work appears to have begun before approval. Reeve Walter Stack wanted assurance the work meets the town’s heritage requirements. It was thought this applicant was getting more than others did. Staff convinced them on all scores. Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing (MMAH). However, the township pointed out that the province is offering no extra money for the work, and that the majority of homeowners pump out their septic tanks on a regular basis without a regulation in place. And that the proper rules are already in place. “There are many more important issues on which to spend taxpayers’ money than ‘enhancing’ maintenance on existing functioning systems,” reads a resolution from the township. The resolution, sent to MMAH and nearby municipalities and politicians, asks to drop the proposal.

World songwriting finalist to perform fundraiser in hometown DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Editor’s note: Three hours before this interview, Vicki Brittle learned that she is a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Of the 17,000 entrants, including longstanding professional writers who have penned for the likes of Shania Twain, Brittle is an Arnprior newcomer to the business. Judges include Lorde, Bastille, and Ziggy Marley. The winner will be announced in mid April. As she trudges through the snow at the back of her old high school during a blindingly bright sunny afternoon, singer/songwriter Vicki Brittle is brought back to a darker time in her life. The teen years aren’t easy for anyone, especially during an unpredictable time in world history. Struggling for independence from family, complicated relationships, wild chemical reactions in a growing brain: many reach out for guidance. Some later than others. “I’m past the rock-‘n-roll stage now, thank the Lord,” Brittle said, a guitar strapped on her back as she reaches the bleachers. She climbs up the wooden planks, stomping snow off her leather cowboy boots along the way. “I had a lot of depression and anxiety. “I haven’t been back to ADHS (Arnprior District High School) since I went here.” She sings a sad Jewel song to the trees at the Grove, across empty Oattes Field. Her raspy voice - what she calls “Joppy” in a nod to Janis Joplin - is surprisingly rich and soulful coming from such a outwardly cheerful person. The 20-year-old spent more than a few hours at the guidance counsellor’s. She’s always had music; singing at a young age, writing since 13. She found discipline at the Royal Conservatory, and guidance from ADHS’s Frank Pecora, teachers at Main Street School of Music, and privately from Lisa Webber. Still, artists are drawn to the complexities of life. Creativity exists in contradictions; muses will lead down paths less travelled. Brittle is no exception. She needed the school’s guidance office. She knows many others who did as well. It’s a safe place to relax, talk, read, or just hang out with an anxiety toy or two. The toys tend to go missing, of course. They find their way back to classrooms, buses, even homes where they end up living out the rest of their lives on the bed of a struggling teen in need of something to hold. As office resources deplete, the money to find replacements becomes increasingly difficult to come by. There are plenty of fundraisers for class trips and sports and arts. But who has even heard of anxiety toys? That’s where Brittle – who is up for a coveted world songwriting award – comes in. She is host-

VIcki Brittle knows the confusion and anxiety many teens suffer through. That’s why she is hosting a fundraiser for her former school’s counselling department. ing a fundraiser at the Arnprior Legion this Friday, March 24. The night is also a single release party for Brother (O’Hana), a story of struggle and coping, and “how nobody gets left behind.” Her music often draws in personal experience, which includes a time at the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre, and how her family stuck by her through it all. The night promises to be a rollicking good time with four bands, including her father’s High Noon. “It’s going to be pretty cool and wild,” Brittle said. “Gracie Cavanagh will be there. Bacon Tree. It’s going to be a wicked time.” Tickets are available at her parents’ shop, Brittle Printing, or on Facebook at Vicki Brittle Music. The $15 cost includes a donation. She doesn’t volunteer to talk about that morning’s announcement that she is a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition for her Cold As Stone. She is excited, of course, but seemingly not more then relaying the story of playing at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Rhyming off the names that have played at the Toronto locale shows her appreciation for music history. The awards are secondary. Tom Havey is principal at ADHS. He said mental health is growing in importance at the school. A lot is being done, but a lot more needs to be done, he added. “I applaud her (for doing the fundraiser), and it speaks to her character,” he said. “We, as a school, are still learning about this issue.” Havey remembers when Brittle attended, and said the school is proud of her early success, the songwriting competition in particular. “In some ways it is a surprise; you know, we are a small town. But in other ways it’s not: her tenacity and creativity is pretty remarkable,” Havey said. “We’re proud of her and happy for her. It’s proof that good things happen to good people.”

Barber shop cuts to simpler time, men’s sense of pride DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
The first thing you notice while climbing the Downtown Barber stairs, recently opened in Arnprior, is the music: Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son Boy Williamson, the legendary Robert Johnson. Blues. Not a Bon Jovi set at Ottawa’s Bluesfest blues. Real blues. Delta Blues. Together with vintage straight razors on the walls, a big old saw and an ice saw brought up from the circa 1870 building’s basement, and you feel transported back in time. Back to when hardworking men believed in keeping up appearances — at least once a week. Back when a hot towel pressed against the face felt better than a taste of bourbon. Or when a straight shave by a steady hand was an admired skill, like the best logger in the bush. That’s the atmosphere Michelle Nicholas and Katie Pawlak have created at their unique barber shop. They spotted a missing service catering exclusively to men, and went unabashedly for it. “There are lots of places for women in town, and not anything for men, catering to men,” Pawlak said. “We are definitely catering to men. The sports channel is always on; everything short of a spittoon. This is no hair salon.” That would be downstairs, the hair salon, that is. The Downtown Spa (also owned by Nicholas) is full of pretty things and perfumes and wonderfully foreign rituals to a man who appreciates a quality leather chair and wood-framed
mirrors. Asking for the “Fury cut” — recently made popular again by the Brad Pitt movie of the same name — would seem out of context downstairs. Upstairs is capitalizing on a trend, Nicholas explained. Men are once again taking an interest in their appearance. It isn’t vanity or effeminacy. It’s about showing some pride. “There’s a real resurgence of men’s grooming and their attention to detail,” Nicholas said. “In the city you’ll see a place like this on every street corner. We don’t want people to have to drive to the city anymore.” She rejects the notion that men don’t want pampering. It has nothing to do with pampering. “It’s a return to a simpler time,” she said. “They don’t want to sit at a sink smelling of rosebuds. They want to walk out smelling like a man.” She also dismisses it as only a place for 20-something hipsters. They’ve had all ages in, from five to 75. So far so good? “It’s been quite well received.” They hope to offer groomsmen parties. While the bride and her girls are off getting gussied up, the men will get on fleek and bond over who has the best flow. The Downtown Barber is open Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Or by appointment. Pricing is $25 for barber cut, $35 for gentleman’s cut, beards start at $15 and hot towel shaves are $55.

Police were notified by the victim, no funds were transferred and the investigation is continuing. The investigation revealed a second attempt by a second suspect at passing a forged cheque belonging to the victim. Provincial Const. Colleen McGrath is investigating. Trustee receives exceptional service award The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board is very pleased to announce that Andy Bray has been selected as a recipient of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) Trustee Award of Merit. The award recognizes individuals who have provided ‘exceptional service to Catholic education over the years’, and will be presented at the OCSTA AGM and Conference in Toronto at the end of April. Mr. Bray has served the Board for 33 years as of February 23, 2017, holding the position of chairperson for three terms in the 1990s as well as from 2005 to 2009, and is currently the vice-chair. Over the years, he has chaired every major committee, a number of ad hoc committees and has been trustee representative on the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). In those years, he also was instrumental in establishing school councils and a leader in implementing training and faith formation for parents within the RCCDSB.
Bray also served seven years (2008–2015) as Director of Region 10 of the OCSTA provincially. In his nomination letter to the OCSTA, Dave Howard, RCCDSB Board Chair, noted about Bray, “His exceptional level of service and unfailing commitment to Catholic education has been authentic, inspiring and unswerving for these many years.” Bray demonstrates a deep faith commitment through his contributions to his parish including chair of parish council, Eucharistic minister, reader and usher. He has also been actively involved in his community as a volunteer firefighter, Cub and Scout leader and minor hockey coach. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2082 in Arnprior. In outlining Bray’s exceptional contributions to Catholic Education, the nomination letter states “Andy is a man of integrity... He is a strong witness to the Catholic community and he puts the spiritual and academic
growth of each of his students at the forefront of every decision he makes.” “This is very exciting for our trustees,” says Michele Arbour, RCCDSB Director of Education. “The OCSTA Award of Merit was last presented to an RCCDSB trustee in 1988. Our congratulations to Andy. The recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication spanning more than three decades is certainly well deserved.” Bray, who represents Arnprior, McNab/ Braeside Township, and Greater Madawaska Township, says he is humbled to be nominated by his peers and honoured to receive the award. He states that “although I am named recipient of this award, I must share credit with many others. My family, who experienced my frequent absence, especially in the early days when there were many more committee meetings. My fellow trustees and the senior administration of our board who shared their expertise and enthusiasm. To all of you, I shall be eternally grateful.”

Throughout the month of March, OPP and its partners, will be raising public awareness and providing helpful tips to prevent an increasing number of Canadians from falling victim to fraud. Specifically, the OPP will target three mass marketing fraud types, including the emergency and Canada Revenue Agency scams, romance scams and Microsoft/computer service scams. According to the anti-fraud centre, from January 2014 to December 2016, it’s estimated Canadians lost more than $291 million to fraudsters; with the largest demographic targeted being seniors between the age of 60 to 79. And fraud is happening more and more. Complaints jumped to 90,000 in 2016 over just
under 70,000 in 2015. Did you know that 95 per cent of fraud victims never report the crime? Whether it’s embarrassment or indifference, it’s important to report the incidences to police in order to spread the word about different types of scams. And they’re easier than ever to report thanks to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s new Fraud Reporting System (services.rcmp-grc. gc.ca) which offers secure sign-in methods. Alternatively, fraud can be reported to Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800222-TIPS or online at www.tipsubmit.com. There are a few basic tips we can all practice in our daily lives to ensure fraud prevention, starting with never giving out personal or banking information to people at the door, over the phone, through email or social media, or on unsecured websites. Be cautious. Be smart. Remember, if it leaves you with lots of questions or sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Local Canadian Peace Initiative chapter encourages positive dialogue/action To the editor:
Over the last year and months the political process and leadership in the U.S.A. is making controversial headlines and affecting events and responses within Canada and around the globe. Day to day, it leaves many of us wondering what is going on in our world when this divisive type of politics is happening in what we believed was the most powerful country in the world. We may be experiencing anxiety about where this may lead. Where does Canada stand? And where might we as concerned individuals take action? Locally, the Arnprior & Area Chapter of the Canadian Peace Initiative (CPI) encourages

interested citizens to study, dialogue, campaign and engage in activities to build positive and peaceful responses in our community and national life in addressing such worrisome times. And, both on the personal level and together, we can act and advocate to build healthy approaches to address real and perceived conflicts now and in the long term. Can we promote and support thoughtful, reasoned non-sensational news coverage in these times? And, while maintaining economic and social ties with our neighbours, could we more closely cooperate with the rest of the world’s 190 countries economically, politically and socially to help make military action and war
undesirable? There are thousands of Canadians with practical experience in many modes of non-violent conflict resolution. Can their voices and knowledge be heard, supported and employed? This letter is to highlight the potential that every community has in choosing peaceful means to resolve every conflict. The Ottawa Valley has produced many peace builders and I would like to point out two today. One is David Smith from a longstanding farming family that hails from the Ottawa Valley. David has worked in peace-building for decades. His work in establishing the voice of peace through radio programs such as Radio Okapi (www.okapi.cc) in areas

This type
of “photographer” trespasses on private property, harasses animals until they become exhausted or flee, damages habitats to get clearer views of subjects, and feeds foxes or releases mice in front of owls to entice them to approach more closely. The latter activity is called “baiting” and I am not alone in having real problems with that activity. Owls and foxes are not like chickadees with which we can interact without affecting their behaviour. Feeding predators makes them lose their natural fear of humans. Baiting wild birds of prey can even get them killed: Great Gray Owls have been hit by cars as they flew across roads toward live bait. Also, there is the point that releasing non-native animals (pet store mice) into the wild is not legal. I’m not saying that I am holier than anyone else who owns a camera. But I do have a profound respect for (and well-founded knowledge of) all things wild, and do my utmost to avoid disturbing them or affecting their environment when taking photographs. Not everyone gives wildlife their due respect, and digital photography has created new and significant problems for Patience, not store-bought mice, them. and woman’s divisions, a youth and Breast Cup Challenge, and a fun 200 m bonus race for Top A Crews. “It’ll be a day full of fun and adventure to say the least,” says a recent press release. “It’s hard to describe the creative costumes, colourful tents, strenuous paddling, delicious food, and fun all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Madawaska and Ottawa Rivers. Robert Simpson Park and its pathways along the riverfront offer something for everyone.” This year’s Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival not only includes dragon boat races, but a vendor village featuring the best delicious foods and beverages, an awards ceremony, music in the park, and an afterparty as well. Spectators can take in the action along the riverfront, a perfect vantage point to follow the excitement of racing while learning about the sport of dragon boating. “Want to bring the entire family? You are invited to bring the children to enjoy the Kids Zone at Robert Simpson Park. There is something for everyone. Paddlers will have space to relax with their teams along the riverfront and enjoy the competition,” says the release. Dragon boat racing is a sport for all, say officials. This fact is not true in many other sports. It is the teamwork, the synchronicity that moves the boat. Muscle is good, but not nearly as good as paddling together with the correct technique. It is not uncommon to watch seemingly “inexperienced” teams win races. It is about paddling as one and having heart. You will experience the excitement and exhilaration as you explode off of the start line and power through the finish. Dragon boating is an incredible way to build team unity, show community pride, and compete against your friends, neighbours, and fellow organizations and companies for the ultimate bragging rights: Dragon Boat Festival Champions. This is a perfect opportunity to try the sport, with all the necessary equipment included in your registration, as well as practice and a team coach. Don’t forget, in a dragon boat, it doesn’t matter who you are. The only thing that matters is if you’re fulfilling your role and synchronizing with everyone else. “Looking for a sponsorship opportunity?” says the release. “Our Dragon Boat Festival organizing committee will help you create a high-profile, feelgood connection with your customers, employees, and the community. We would simply love to talk to you.” The Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival is now open for team and individual registrations. Packers out TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It was a heartbreaker. The Arnprior Packers of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League have been eliminated from the playoffs. The Packers lost game seven on home ice on March 18 to the Richmond Royals 5-4. The Packers won on March 15 by a score of 6-4 and had the chance to wrap things up in Richmond on March 17 but the Royals fought back winning 4-3, forcing a game seven. Game seven was tied 3-3 going into the third period, with Packers goals coming from Bailey Hein, Brad Richardson and Daniel Monk. In the third the Royals put the pressure on scoring two quick goals in the first ten minutes before Richardson answered back at 16:44 for the Packers. With just under two minutes left the Packers thought they had tied it as the goal light flashed on but was quickly waved off. Netminder Anthony Salahor made 33 saves and sat on the bench as the last seconds ticked away on the Packers season.

Arnprior Packer Ryan Bangs, right, shoots the puck through the legs of a Richmond Royals player on March 15 at the Nick Smith Centre, the Packers won that game 6-4. The Royals won 4-3 on March 17 to force a game seven in Arnprior Saturday night, which the Royals won 5-4. Top: members of the Packers raise their sticks to salute the crowd.

A dream over three years in the making is almost a reality for 16 local athletes. The Ottawa Valley Strong Ladies Fastball Team, comprised of players primarily from the Ottawa Valley/West Carleton/Kanata areas are preparing for the tournament of a lifetime; the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand this April. The players, all age 45-plus, are currently packing their bags in preparation for the 10-day fastball tournament. The Ottawa Valley is represented by two local players: Pam Behnke-Van Hoof of Petawawa and Chrissy Laforce of Arnprior, who first met while playing competitive fastball in Ottawa. “After so many years of being there for our families when everyone was playing their sports, this is now more about us, something we wish to do for ourselves.”

The team is coached by Scott Searle, of the University of Ottawa GG’s. Searle is a more than qualified Coach who can put these ladies through the paces in order to compete at the caliber needed for Auckland. “We believe that through our efforts we may also serve as a catalyst and inspiration to other women (and girls) and encourage them to pursue lifelong involvement in sport as a way of life, as we have done in our lives.” The Ottawa Valley Strong Ladies Fastball Team has raised tens of thousands of dollars to help them with their goal of competing at the World Master Games. Of their initial goal of $80,000 or approximately $5,000 per team player with 16 players on the team, they have raised a large portion of the funds over the past two years and but still require a further $11,000 to reach their goal. Funds are needed for general expenses including ground transportation, hotels, equipment and uniforms. Each player is responsible for their own travelling and personal expenses. “We’ve been working towards this
trip for a long time.” says Jayne Coady, player member. “We have said from the beginning that we will get there!” The World Masters Games is a multi-sport event held every four years for athletes who have reached “masters” age of over 35. The event mirrors the Olympic Games, hosting both Summer and Winter Games with Opening and Closing Ceremonies, occurring every four years. Athletes must be amateur status to compete. While there is no qualifying process to attend the World Master Games, there is however and heavily involved application process that the Ottawa Valley Strong had to go through. They had to prove they were a unified team that has been competing in the area. In Auckland, the ladies will be competing against 22 other teams from around the world—but only one other Canadian Team. “ We are proud to represent the Ottawa area,” said Coady of being just one of just two Canadian Teams competing at the Games.

The growing problem of pet obesity Everyone knows it can be difficult, if not impossible, to lose weight. At some point, we’ve all tried fad diets or starvation diets, and we usually end up frustrated and no lighter than when we started. The same can be true for pets. Weight loss can be difficult. Just as with humans, obesity in pets can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, reduced lifespan (threeto-five years) and other health complications. Obesity is defined as 30 per cent above normal weight. Carrying even an extra five per cent of body weight will cause increased strain on muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Arthritis forms in the joints causing pain, which decreases mobility, which decreases calories burned, which leads to more weight gain. Blood sugar is harder to regulate with increased weight and many pets become diabetic due to obesity, just like people. Most pets
Pet Talk
IAN STUPP require insulin injections once or twice daily once they become diabetic. No one wants to have to deal with that. For example, a study by the International Journal of Applied Veterinary Medicine shows that if you feed a small dog one ounce of cheese, it’s the same as you eating one and a half hamburg-
ers or one and a half chocolate bars. For a cat, that same ounce of cheese equals three and a half hamburgers for you. Think of it this way, if Fido gained eight pounds, that would be equal to you gaining 30 pounds. According to the APOP (The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention) a 90 pound Labrador retriever is comparable to a 186 pound, five-foot-four female and a 15 pound cat is comparable to a 254 pound, five-foot-nine male. The problem is simple: excessive caloric intake, too many treats and an inactive lifestyle all contribute to pet obesity. Besides reducing food intake, the APOP recommends 30 to 60 minutes of active play, or two to three miles of walking for larger breeds of dogs such as Labradors or German Shepherds. Smaller breeds should have 15 to 30 minutes of play. Cats can benefit from short five to 15 minute bursts of activity like chasing
toys. The other problem is merchandizing. Manufacturers of pet food rate the cups per pound/ per feeding high. Simply put, the more you feed your pet the faster you will go through a bag, the more you will purchase pet food and the more the manufacturer will profit. For feeding instructions (based on breed, size, and activity level), speak to your veterinarian. Rule of thumb, if you cannot feel your pet’s ribs and they do not have a natural waistline then they are perhaps overweight. As with human weight loss, it would be best to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to diet or exercise routine. Renfrew County Plowmen seeking antique plows for Sept. 16 match It will be a flurry of furrow action at the Renfrew County Plowing Match on Sept. 16. Organizers are gearing up for the big event in conjunction with Canada’s sesquicentennial. The Renfrew County Plowmen’s Association is seeking the public’s help as they prepare for the match. To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary,
they are asking everyone with an antique tractor and plow to take part in the demonstration. “What we are doing is getting feelers out now. We are looking for participants, anyone who has an antique plow or tractor we want them to come out, there will be a demonstration and display,” said Albert Dunbar, head

In loving memory of our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather Cecil Reckenberg Who passed away March 25, 2016 You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. A million times we’ve needed you, A million times we’ve cried, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, No one will ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. Mary gives some insight into her stories: Did they really exist? Hardly a day goes by that an email doesn’t arrive asking about the people appearing in my stories. The most common question is: “Did they really exist?” “Was there really a Cecil? And what about bad Marguirite and Ronny?” After talking with my editor at this paper, we thought it was time to deviate from my usual story line and enlighten our readers about the people who have become familiar over the years. Needless to say, I won’t be able to write about all of them, but I will try to work in as many as I can in the space I am allowed. Of course, there was my mother and father. And my sister Audrey and brothers Emerson and Everett — and although Earl was really a cousin who came to live with us when his mother and father died at an early age, he was always considered a brother, and is referred to in my stories as one of my three brothers. Aunt Lizzie, Aunt Freda, Uncle Henry, Aunt Vanetta, Aunt Lil, Uncle Lou and cousins Richard, Terry and Ronny were all very real. Sadly, Terry is the only one left. Velma and Joyce were indeed my very best friends at the Northcote School, and we kept in touch right up until their deaths. In fact, both were able to recall for me many happenings
Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK
I had long since forgotten, and I was able to create a host of stories based on their memories. Now, what about Cecil? He is one I am so often asked about. Did he really exist? Was he the scamp I made him out to be? Last year, while making a speech up in the Valley, someone in the audience asked that very question. I pointed to a young man sitting a few tables away and introduced Cecil’s son, Richard, who had come to the event that evening. He agreed his father Cecil was indeed a jokester who liked nothing better than to cause a bit of a stir. Incidentally, one of Cecil’s granddaughters, Janet, works in one of my favourite restaurants in Arnprior. So yes indeed, Cecil did exist. The Northcote School still stands on the Rink Road off Highway 60 between Renfrew and Douglas, and now serves as a community centre. Bris-
coe’s General Store is still standing, but alas, no longer exists as a stopping place. Our old farm is up the road from that store, but sadly, the only thing left is the barn, which can be seen far off in the distance. Miss Crosby did indeed exist, but with another name. It is my understanding that on her death bed, a few of her last words were, “Don’t let Mary Cook put my name in her books.” So, she became Miss Crosby, and will remain Miss Crosby. The stores I write about in the town of Renfrew remained a vibrant part of the town for decades after we left the farm. Most old-timers remember them, and when I visit Renfrew, I see the places where those stores were on Raglan Street — and in my mind’s eye I see the Dime Store, as we called it, and the O’Brien Theatre, still there. There really was a Dr. Murphy. And he really did make house calls out in the country and was often paid with a couple of chickens or a bag of potatoes if the patient didn’t have the $2 he charged for the trip. Now, what about bad Marguirite? Well, I am not stupid enough to call her by her right name, and she really is a composite of all the bad little girls I went to school with when I was a youngster. I appreciate very much all the feed-
back I get from readers, and I try to answer every email and letter personally. That is, if my computer behaves. I admit, this new technology is not my strong suit, and often I lose a letter before I have a chance to respond. I urge those who may have yet to hear back from me to please write again. Hopefully, this column will have answered your questions about some of the people in my stories, and it has
given me the opportunity to thank all of you who have written your appreciation to me over the many years this column has appeared in your weekly paper. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www. smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for ebook purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
