Championship broomball is coming back to the Ottawa Valley and it means a major economic boost for Arnprior. The Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championships will be held at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior from April 13 to 16 with the banquet at the RCAF Wing in Renfrew on Friday, April 15. The tournament will welcome 400 players, 170 volunteers with a total of close to 1,000 people to the area. “We expect the event will bring $245,000 into the community,” said Glenn Arthur, Arnprior director of recreation. “It’s a boost to our economy and helps put Arnprior on the map. People are coming from all over Canada and our main goal is we hope they will come back for a visit.” There will be three teams from Saskatchewan, two teams from Manitoba, four teams from Quebec and four teams from Ontario and they will be staying in both Arnprior and Renfrew. Each local school will adopt a team and will make posters to help welcome the teams. Arthur encourages everyone to come out and watch the games as well. “Broomball can be a pretty exciting game and this is the pick of the crop for 19-and-under,” he said. It’s not the first time a major broomball tournament has been hosted in the area. See SEVERAL LOCAL Page 2

Several local teams to compete in national broomball competition Continued from front
The World Broomball Championship was held in Arnprior, Carleton Place, Almonte, Beckwith and Pakenham in the fall of 2012. George Brown, president of Broomball Canada and Carleton Place resident, says it’s getting easier to put together these big events. “We have a reputation of being able to fill the requirements and we have had success; some people think it’s easy,” said Brown. “It’s not easy, but we know how to do it. Glen Arthur steps up every time and so do the volunteers. I guess it does make it easy.” Ruth Brown is one of the tournament cochairs and calls the event a family affair. “It’s nice to play at home. The parents are the biggest fans and it will give the younger kids a chance to see what it is like,” said Ruth. “When we have the national championship it’s nice because they get to meet other kids because it’s a nice big family.” LOCAL TEAMS
The Valley Gamblers are the host boy’s team and the Eastern Thunder the host girls team.
Ruth who started the broomball program a number of years ago in Carleton Place, is also the coach for the Gamblers. “We were disappointed last year because the Gamblers lost in the semi-finals,” she said. “We got into a little bit of trouble, but we won the bronze. They are looking forward to winning at home.” George thinks the team will have a good chance this year. “The Valley Gamblers are very competitive. They have won three gold medals in the past few years and are a very solid team. It’s a real nice opportunity for them to play at home,” he said. Gamblers team captain Zack Kealey from Almonte says the team had a slow start last year. “This year we want to come out fast and show everyone that we are here to play,” said Kealey. “As long as we keep healthy and motivated to win, we will be fine. The ultimate goal is to win, that is why we are here.” Phillip Ferguson from Smiths Falls says it’s special to have the tournament at home. “Our friends and family can come and watch us play and it’s good to get broomball talked about more. It’s good that it’s coming around and have more people play.”
Public invited to help carry the cross, attend all-church service Friday Staff
A Good Friday tradition is continuing in Arnprior. The Carry the Cross walk will be followed by a shared church service this Friday, March 25. Participants are invited to gather around the cross at the Canadian Tire parking lot at 9:45 a.m. A prayer walk will follow to Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church where a Good Friday all-church service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Members of several local congregations will take part. The invitation to the community notes that it is a “wonderful opportunity to walk in unity with other believers and be a testimony to our community.”
Some of the nation’s top broomballers will take to the Nick Smith Centre ice April 13 to 16 for the Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championships. The tournament is expected to draw players and fans from far afield to Arnprior. Todd Clouthier, coach for the Eastern Thunder, says it would mean a lot to win at home. Caitlin Clouthier, 15, has played broom-
ball for eight years and her sister Amber, 18, has been playing for 10 years. Both girls attend Arnprior and District High school while playing for the Eastern Thunder based out of Finch. Caitlin says she likes the sport more than hockey because of its fast pace while Amber says she likes the physical aspect of the game. “It would mean a lot (to win), because it is our hometown,” said Amber. Last year, the Thunder lost in the semi-finals to their rivals, the Seaway Valley Devils, who went on to win the tournament. “It was a big loss last year and it would be really big to come back and finish first. Both girls are looking forward to playing the Devils again this year. “We always go head-to-head with them,” said Caitlin. “Our games are always close; it could go either way,” added Amber. Caitlin says this is one of the team’s strongest years. “Our communication is great off the ice and we need to work more on the ice before we pass the ball,” added Amber. A weekend pass for the event costs $15 and a day passes are $5. For more information, visit www.broomball.ca.
Library, Glad Tidings, Early Years to hold Easter Saturday parties There are at least three Easter parties for children in Arnprior this Saturday morning. The Arnprior Public Library will have live Easter chicks on hand March 26 when it holds its annual Easter egg hunt. “Meet the peeps” and find the eggs from 10 a.m. to noon. Parents can take photos of their youngsters with the
chicks and enter them into the ‘farmandforest’ Easter photo contest if they wish. Meanwhile, Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church of Arnprior is holding its annual Easter egg hunt March 26. Everyone is welcome to drop by the Baskin Drive church between 10 and 11 a.m. for the telling of the Easter story, a photo booth and a hunt for 6,000 Easter eggs.
The Arnprior Early Years Centre is holding an Easter ‘Eggstravaganza from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday for children up to 8 years old. The event at the Family Preschool Resource Centre’s premises in the Kenwood Centre will include games, cookiedecorating at a scavenger hunt. The cost is $10 a family.

$10,000,000 Fire department celebrates
Ken Carr, centre right, joined the Arnprior Fire Department in 1965. Celebrating his 50 years in the volunteer service are, from left, Chief John Okum, Tanya Roberts from the Office of the Fire Marshal, and Deputy Chief Rick Desarmia.
Derek Dunn
derek.dunn@metroland.com
It was standing room only in council chambers on March 14, with men and women in formal uniforms, gathered to celebrate one of their own’s exceptional achievement. Ken Carr began his volunteering at the Arnprior Fire Department as a “call man” in 1965, under the leadership of chief Stan Tourangeau. Fifty years on – plus one week – Carr retired to the appreciation and admiration of everyone in the room, and many more beyond. The ceremony for Carr was light-hearted and full of laughs, not unlike the man himself, according to Chief John Okum. “I’ve worked closely with Ken for 28 years. He has been an inspiration to many people. A mentor, offering guidance, wisdom, and reflection on past fires,” Okum said. “He’s a doer, a jokester. If this was a talent show, he’d be the comic.” Okum said firefighting could take a mental toll: the horror of lost lives, the pain and grief, and loss of tangibles that define identity. He talked about the sacrifice firefighting family members make: cancelled family activities, lost income, sleepless nights while a spouse is doing a dangerous job. Then he praised the Carr family – brother Blaine and father Herman – for their many
years of dedication to the town. “One hundred and ten years by the Carr family,” he said. “What a contribution.” To help illustrate what 50 years means, Okum explained that a government form commemorating volunteer service has check boxes for 30, 35, 40, and 45 years. There is no 50. “You broke the provincial form,” he told Carr. It was with mixed feelings that Okum shared the story of Carr’s announcement. It was late Dec. 14 when Carr came into his office. Not a word was spoken. A sealed envelope was placed on his desk. Inside it read, “The trucks are all backed in and everything’s good. I submit my retirement.” “Thank you, Captain Carr,” I said. Tanya Roberts from the Office of the Fire Marshal, said the 50th anniversary was an “incredible” accomplishment. In her many years of representing the province of Ontario, she has only ever attended two other similar ceremonies. “It’s almost unheard of,” Roberts said. The bars were presented and a painting given, and every councillor approached Carr to offer their thanks. Carr was mostly jovial, but at times appeared moved. He said little, other than to thank his wife Lynn near the back row of the crowd. “I couldn’t have done it by myself,” he said.

The owners – some of whom asked not to be named, others are private partners - are renovating the former Dr. J Audio Video at 123 John St., in the heart of Arnprior. They are planning for a 43seat, 103-sq.-metre pub, with an apartment upstairs. Town planner Robin Smith said all structures must offer a certain number of parking spots. OPP’s spring seat belt campaign set to begin Staff
The OPP are warning males that they are paying the price for not buckling up their seatbelts as often and females. OPP statistics indicate that over the past five years (2011-2015), a total of 332 people have died in collisions on OPPpatrolled roads as a result of not wearing a seat belt. According to OPP data, 261 of the victims were males and 71 were females. When involved in a serious motor vehicle collision, getting ejected from a vehicle almost always ends in death, stress police. As the OPP prepares for their Spring Seat Belt campaign over the Easter long weekend, they are urging males to be good role models for children and buckle up. In the five-year study period,

nine children died because they were not properly restrained in the vehicle. Parents and child caregivers need to ensure that children are always safely buckled in a child restraint appropriate to their age and size, say police. “Over the Easter Long Weekend, the OPP are counting on all drivers to help make it a safe weekend for everyone travelling on Ontario roads. Besides lack of occupant restraint, OPP officers will be conducting enforcement and education activity associated with other negative road user behaviours, which include aggressive driving, driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol and driving while distracted.” MAILBOX THEFT

Solutions to this problem are simple: • Turn off your lights after hours or put them on a motion sensor. • Never use outdoor lights that shine light above horizontal and up into the sky. All the energy going up needlessly increases your electricity bill, while also annoying your neighbours. • Select only fully shielded fixtures that aim the light down onto the ground where it will serve its intended purpose.

Towards that end we promote simple, safe, and cost-effective responsible lighting practices throughout Canada. The Ottawa Chapter of the RASC will be

Any local businesses who upgrade their light fixtures this summer to be dark sky friendly will have their names published in a full-page RASC-sponsored advertisement in this newspaper. To the Editor: Do you remember looking up into a clear night sky from your backyard and seeing the starry expanse of the Milky Way twinkling back at you? Did the experience inspire you? Were you humbled by the sheer vastness of our galaxy? Do you know why you can’t experience this from Arnprior anymore? It is because of the expanding problem of light pollution. Some might say that this loss is the inevitable cost of technological progress; that we must sacrifice the beauty of the heavens at the altar of public safety. The truth is that light pollution is only a problem because most people just don’t realize the effect they are having when they install unshielded outdoor lights. These include decorative ‘carriage lights’, as well as poorly aimed floodlights and wallpacks. Is your light contributing to the glowing cloud that hovers over the town at night? It is easy to tell. If you place your light at eye level and the only light you see is on the ground below your fixture, it is a good design. The most glaring culprits (pun intended)

Feds should fund Hwy 17 work
We can only hope Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Steven DeLuca is in a listening mood this week when a delegation from Renfrew County arrives in Toronto to impress on him the need to keep the Highway 17 four-laning project on the frontburner. Maybe he will be encouraged by the infrastructure spending by his federal Liberal counterpart in Tuesday’s budget. He should be inspired by the efforts of local municipalities, for many of them have major infrastructure projects. They are doing their part to spend the country out of the economic doldrums. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals were resoundingly elected last year, in part, because of their promise to put off balancing the budget and instead generate jobs and economic activity through spending. The provincial Liberals, faced with a massive budget deficit, have been more constrained, but they too tend to lean toward spending in troubled times, although the beneficiaries are too seldom the province’s rural residents. So if our two senior levels of government want to spend their way out

To the Editor: Re: Cheryl Gallant’s letter to the editor decrying their omissions and denying that she “yelled” at MP Karen McCrimmon (ChronicleGuide, March 17). Ms. Gallant, I saw the video of that question period session, and I can’t help but notice something a wee bit odd. In your letter complaining that parts of your verbal exchange were omitted in Metroland’s reporting, you yourself seem to have made rather a significant omission. In fact, you left out the best part of the exchange, where McCrimmon takes you to task because “(using) cheap political rhetoric to

with DeLuca today to plead the case for quick approval of the next stage of the four-laning. Being the TransCanada Highway, the route should also be the recipient of federal funding. Perhaps DeLuca can get the feds to come up with a share of the money, something local politicians have been unable to do. It’s not like local representatives haven’t been doing their share when it comes to infrastructure spending. Arnprior has a $12-million downtown revitalization project underway. In Renfrew, $4.5 million is being invested in improving the O’Brien Road corridor and Plaunt Street. McNab-Braeside has and is undertaking major road work on Goshen and Lochwinnoch roads and Scheel and McLean drives in conjunction with the highway work. And the county is preparing to rehabilitate Madawaska Boulevard among other major road projects this year. Local governments are doing their part in stimulating the economy with infrastructure spending. If the provincial and federal governments want to spend their way to prosperity, let the TransCanada Highway be part of the solution, not a longdrawn-out problem.

of an economic downturn, we have a perfect non-city project for them, but one with both federal and provincial implications. The Trans Canada Highway winds its way through Renfrew County. All’s good until it passes Arnprior, then the trouble begins. Not only does the highway with its high traffic volumes become a danger to drivers, the congestion, especially in the summer, is a real deterrence to economic development and tourism. The four-laning will extend to Scheel Drive late this year, but that won’t provide much if any relief for motorists heading up the Valley. Nothing against Scheel Drive residents, but not much traffic is going to get off the highway at the next end of the four lanes. They need at least to be extended quickly to Calabogie Road and better yet Renfrew where there are connections to hive off some of the traffic to tourism areas. Renfrew County Warden and Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon, McNabBraeside Mayor Tom Peckett, and Admaston-Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue, all members of a recently formed county Highway 17 extension advisory committee, are meeting

score points on the backs of military families is way below the dignity deserving of this House. That is absolutely unacceptable.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. As for your main contention that you were not yelling, I’m sorry to say it just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. You got all finger pointy and indignant, radiating your faux outrage directly at Karen McCrimmon, and you radiated it rather loudly as you are wont to do. So actually Cheryl, you did kinda get all shouty there. But hey, why take my word for it? Why not check the official You Tube channel of one Cheryl Gallant and see for yourself (https:// youtu.be/1oWXhHSBUWk)? My favourite thing about that video is see-
ing your melodramatic posturing, moving from a calculated display of contemptuous anger to oozing concern for our veterans, and contrasting it with McCrimmon’s genuine ire at your flag-wrapped pandering. I can watch that all day and can’t thank you enough for posting it. I encourage you to continue the monomaniacal pursuit of publicly sharing every scrap of limelight you get, regardless of how much a fool it makes you look. Never stop being you, Cheryl. You can feel free to stop getting re-elected, but never stop being you.

Daniel development open process allays concerns To the Editor: Re: Daniel development to be ‘sympathetic’ to heritage value. Imagine my surprise, reading the front page of the March 17 edition of this paper to find out that I was an opponent of the development proposal for 30 Daniel St. N. I wondered when that had happened. First I went and checked in the mirror and, yes, it was still me there. Then I checked in with my brain and it had no record of my being an opponent. Perhaps Mr. Dunn can
enlighten me. Actually I am, in many ways, in favour of this development and, upon speaking to the developers after the March 14 open meeting of the Town Council, I came away feeling better than I had when I went in. In this day and age it is not realistic to run the former Baker home as a single-family dwelling. There might have been a 1 or 2 per cent chance of that happening. Retrofitting for energy efficiency, costs to maintain the building and
Canada not a nation of non-believers To the Editor: I am writing in regards to question #6 in your article in meeting the Syrian refugees (Arnprior ChronicleGuide, March 17). So you are saying Canadians don’t believe in God. We do, at least some of us, and that’s a pretty wide brush used to paint all of us as non-believers in God. Especially, with Easter being celebrated by so many Canadians in the coming week or so ahead. I believe in God and Jesus Christ. I believe in ‘pure’ science, that which is observable and proven, not ‘theoretical’ science, which is postulating at best, yet taught as fact. I also believe that everyone has the right to chose to believe and live as they see fit, with all due respect of our country’s laws. But to say that Canada is a country that doesn’t ‘posit a God above the clouds’, is a false statement. You speak for yourself, not all Canadians.
taxes would make it a project only for a family that had a lot of money and was very enthusiastic about restoring old homes. The development proposal seems quite sensible for that property. Infill housing, when properly done, creates a better community for all. I have no traffic concerns regarding this development. I live across from the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. It produces far more traffic on a regular basis than such a development will cause. A project of this limited size is not going to produce a whole lot of people going in and out at the same time. In fact, in Robin Smith’s presentation, she pointed out that the driveway now in existence will become an entrance only. All exits will come from the parking lot at the other end of the property, thereby improving traffic flow. I have seen near gridlock across the street at the Legion as bingo games and other gatherings come to an end. The town has handled that well for some years. Concerns about traffic on Daniel Street are a separate issue and need to be addressed by the county and the town. Daniel Street is a county road. Health issues have prevented my becoming active in this regard. I have had major concerns for years, especially about safety at intersection of McGonigal and Daniel streets. I am a concerned citizen. main concern about the proposal for 30 Daniel N. was and remains the future of the mature trees on the property. In speaking to one of the developers, it became apparent that a minimum of four large trees will be lost. If this is the case it is fewer than I had feared. It remains to be seen whether the foundation for the addition to the main house and the foundations for the duplexes will harm the root systems of half a dozen more mature trees, resulting in their death. In this, I am trusting the Town to work with the developers and experts in the preservation of trees during the site development stage, before the site plan is approved, to minimize the damage. I am being given the courtesy of being kept apprised of the site plan developments by one of the developers through email. I look forward to regular communication in this regard. Opponent? No. Involved? Concerned? Questioning? Yes. The more open and communicative these processes are the better for all involved. Courteous consultation, involving different ideas and points of view, can only improve the development of our world. United in the aim of creating a better, thriving, involved community, open to new ideas and considerations is the way to make it happen.
During the renovations, we are hammering the prices too!

Message from Queen’s Park
Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski
Monthly Column – March 2016 Think we’ve had enough snow yet? While it was a green Christmas, we have certainly had our share of it lately. The snowmobilers and skiers will be happy, as this should extend their season a little bit. But I for one can tell you that it hasn’t made driving any easier. Perhaps we’ll have a white Easter—which as you know comes early this year on March 27th. On Thursday, February 25th, the Liberals tabled their earliest budget yet; in fact, it was the earliest budget in my memory. Perhaps they would have done better by waiting and getting it right. While the budget has its typical shiny bobbles—designed to attract the support of different groups—overall it is not a budget that will be kind to the taxpayer, particularly those who live and work in rural Ontario. In the big picture, Ontario’s debt will rise to $308 billion in 2016-17. This amounts to over $22,000 dollars for every man, woman, and child living in the province. Interest on the debt will rise to $11.8 billion for the fiscal year beginning April 1st. In fact, if interest on the debt was a Ministry, only the Ministries of Health and Education would spend more. The result is that instead of providing the services that Ontario families need (many of which could be provided by that $11.8 billion) the province is instead spending that on interest on the debt. Bear in mind that we are going through a prolonged period of some of the lowest interest rates we’ve ever experienced. If those rates were to increase significantly, our province would be in grave fiscal trouble. The Liberals tries to paint a bright picture, but the facts show something different. On March 3rd the Financial Accountability Officer reported that the Liberals are trying their best to make their deficit appear smaller by booking one-time revenues as operating revenues. And BMO Capital Markets said asset sales—such as the money they are getting from the shares of Hydro One—are one-time in nature and won’t address the underlying structural deficits. As I’ve said, there are items in this budget that will benefit some people, but the fact remains that there are other items that will hurt all Ontarians. As part of the budget, and their new cap-and-trade scheme, they will be implementing a 4.3 cents per litre tax on gasoline and an even higher tax on diesel fuel. The price of getting to and from work, taking your children or grandchildren to various activities, and simply visiting friends is going to go up under this government. Transportation is going to be one of the sectors the Liberals are going to hit hard with their cap-and-trade scheme and rural people are going to be hit the hardest. The cost of heating our homes—be it natural gas, propane, or furnace oil—is also slated to rise dramatically. Of course, electricity (regardless of how it is generated) continues to be an ever-increasing burden on the family budget. After increasing the average hydro bill by over a $100 at the beginning of the year, the government had the gall to offer $2 off on people’s electricity bills. As I have said in the Legislature, this insulting amount is equal to a cup of coffee each month; this is of little comfort to the people who are struggling to pay their bills. One of the things that Patrick Brown and the PC Caucus asked the government for in this budget was a credible plan to address skyrocketing hydro rates—in that respect the Liberals have failed miserably. Hopefully the people of Ontario remember that in 2018. R0013737805 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, March 24, 2016 9

Canada needs bill of rights to ensure clean water To the Editor: It is preposterous that Canada has no legally enforceable drinking-waterquality standards at the national level and most of the guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality provide inadequate protection for public health. There are places in this country that have been under boil-water advisories for decades. Moreover, on the provincial level, the patchwork of water policies compromises clean water, jeopardizing people’s health. While other countries such as Finland and Uruguay recognize citizens’ right to a healthy environment and have used envi-
ronmental-rights legislation to protect biodiversity, limit overfishing, stop destructive dam projects, and protect people’s right to clean water, Canada falls far behind. We need an Environmental Bill of Rights, as part of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, that recognizes, protects, and fulfills our right to a healthy environment. Including our right to clean water, and legislation providing clear guidelines for government, industry, and citizens to manage resources, economic development, and the health and well-being of communities in ways that are transparent, predictable, just, and sustainable. Health-care costs because
of exposure to environmental hazards and other costs of pollution in Canada already come to more than $100 billion per year. Financial excuses not to deal with pollution and environmental issues are false and foolish. It is more than time that the federal government of Canada took real action to protect our environment, including not making trade deals that effectively negate any legislation that is passed at any level and not allowing pipelines that, judging by independent assessments and recorded history, will inevitably spill huge quantities of toxins that will poison the waters in heavily populated areas like the Ottawa Valley (pipelines that will actually
ensure that less oil and gas come to Ontario homes and thus cause heating prices to skyrocket). Canadians must stand together to demand our rights.
It’s time for the federal government to implement the right to clean water in Canada by passing an environmental bill of rights that respects, protects and fulfills

To the Editor:
Winter can be a dreary time of year for members of L’Arche Arnprior. Last year to help chase away the monotony of winter, we used some of our donation funds to rent the local theatre on a Saturday morning. We watched Paddington and had a delightful time, laughing together at the silly antics of a marmalade-loving bear. This February we were fortunate enough to be the recipients of an anonymous donation, which was given specifically to sponsor this particular event. So, on a wintery Saturday morning, we bundled up and trundled off the O’Brien Theatre, to watch Kung Fu
Panda 3. The O’Brien Theatre was wonderful in its accommodations, opening four hours earlier than usual and making sure to play the movie on the ground floor to ensure that it was accessible for all in our community. We were welcomed into the theatre by smiling faces and the smell of buttery popcorn. The movie was made that much better by being able to watch it together, laughing this time at the witty quips of a Kung Fu expert panda bear. We are very grateful for this opportunity to brighten up the lengthy winter months, and to the O’Brien Theatre for happily accommodating us. Katie Toews L’Arche Arnprior

The original Ottawa Redblacks are back are still farther south. The males return about two weeks ahead of the females, and immediately stake claims on suitable habitat. Cattail wetlands are their sites, Michael Runtz favourite although almost vegetated Nature’s Way any wet patch gets occupied. Dominant males claim the best quality territories and they receive a reward that is much more than a piece of nesting habitat; high quality real estate results in multiple females settling in to raise their families. Red-winged Blackbirds are polygynous birds, which means males acquire multiple mates. In our area, preferred males can have up to half a dozen females in their harem, but in California (where things are obviously a bit looser!) up to a dozen females per male have been recorded. Although the males don’t take part in incubating eggs, they protect the females’ nests and also help feed their young. Partly because of their unusual sex
life and partly because they are one of the most abundant birds in North America, Red-winged Blackbirds have been the subject of myriad studies. My favourite is one that was done by Dr. Patrick Weatherhead, formerly of Carleton University. Weatherhead wondered if a male treated all of the females in his harem equally. He used a simulated predator (a crow model) to measure a male’s response to a threat to a female’s nest. Weatherhead discovered they were not, that some females were defended aggressively while others were barely defended at all. He also used DNA testing to examine his paternity of the eggs in each nest and discovered that the females best defended had eggs to which the male had full paternity. The females whose nests were most poorly defended had eggs to which he had little or no paternity at all! This revealed that female Redwinged Blackbirds “play the field” to varying degrees. But how do males know that certain females are unfaithful? And how do they retain that memory for payback later on? Those are questions DNA will never answer! Football fans will recognize ‘Redblacks’ as being the name of the Ottawa professional football team, a reincarnation of the former ‘Ottawa Roughriders’. While the new name was chosen for very different reasons, the two colours it incorporates have great psychological significance. Red is the colour of energy, passion, and action, while black symbolizes the secretive and the unknown. These associations are most fitting for a local bird that wears both those colours, a bird that has is currently heralding the arrival of spring. That bird is, of course, the Red-winged Blackbird. Actually, only male Red-winged Blackbirds are black and red, the red being confined to small feathers (coverts) that adorn the shoulders of their wings. Not always do they show their red, however, for that colour can be hidden under larger, black body feathers (the scapulars). The red is revealed when a male is displaying, something that the newly arrived males are currently doing. Female Red-winged Blackbirds are not black and red, but are brown with thick, brown streaks adorning their breasts, and in fact look not unlike oversized sparrows. But you won’t see any females just yet for they

Local farmers elected to NFU executive Christian Farmers Two members of the Renfrew County National Farmers Union (NFU), Local 330, have been acclaimed to the organization’s provincial executive.. Tony Straathof and Tim Tabbert, president and vice-president of Local 330, along with secretary-treasurer Connie Tabbert, attended the threeday event in Kingston earlier this month. Straathof and Tim Tabbert were re-appointed to the provincial board where they have served for quite some time. Straathof was then further acclaimed to sit on the NFU’s national board During the annual meeting the Ontario NFU organized a public event featuring author Diana BeresfordKroeger, who spoke to a packed audience about a variety of topics related to the environment. A well-published author, she has five books all related to plants and nature. On the final day of the AGM, the executive met with NFU national president Jan Slomp. On the local front, Straathof and Tim Tabbert were acclaimed to the president and vice-president positions for the Renfrew County NFU earlier this month at its annual general meeting. There was some discussion if the meeting should be cancelled due to the
weather conditions, but surprisingly enough, a few members showed up, as did the guest speaker, Eganville lawyer Stewart Lavigueur, so the meeting went ahead as scheduled. ESTATE PLANNING AT AGM
Lavigueur spoke about estate planning and new legislation. He noted there are many rumours about a new administration tax, which just aren’t true. For example, he said a will can be probated at any time and it’s three months from the time of probation that the new administration tax must be paid, not from the time of the person’s death. Also, there is no more guestimating how much something is worth, Lavigueur said. All of the more expensive items have to be appraised, he said. When people are filling out various forms, such as insurance, Registered Retirement Savings Plans, etc., name a beneficiary, and then that money will not be included in the probate, he explained. As for wills, it’s just not true that if you don’t have one, the government gets everything, Lavigueur said. The government will try and find a relative, whether it be a child, niece or nephew, sibling, aunt or uncle, etc., he said. “The government only gets it if
no family members are found,” he stressed. But, if there’s a will it makes life a lot easier for those left behind, Lavigueur said. “The will will not allow fighting, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be challenged,” he added. It’s very important people have a Power of Attorney for property as well as for personal care, he added. Lavigueur said each death has its own concerns, so the better prepared the surviving family members are, the better. For more information, he suggested people talk to a lawyer and they can also review the Ontario Executors Face New Probate Filing Rules, which became effective Jan. 1, 2015. Other AGM business was taken care of, including elections. Directors are Patrick Carter (youth), Dave Mackay, Marshall Buchanan, Lauretta Rice (women) and Bruce Karlstrom. Directors-at-large are Margaret Robinson, Bob Dobson, and Christina and Robbie Anderman Connie Tabbert was reappointed secretary/treasurer. The RC NFU meets the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Barr Line Community Centre and anyone can attend the meeting. If you would like more information regarding the NFU, email rcnfu330@ gmail.com or call Straathof at 613587-4343 or talk to any member.

policy tour to visit county March 31 The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) is holding a policy tour around the province with a stop in Renfrew County. On Thursday, March 31, the organization is hosting a meeting at the Renfrew Christian Reformed Church at 431 Albert. St. in Renfrew from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All interested are welcome to the meeting, which begins with a social at 10:30 a.m. followed by welcome/opening addresses, district business, local issues, lunch, CFFO policy tour information and a closing. Some of the items to be discussed include biodiversity, nutrient loss in waterways, soil organic matter and carbon sequestration. What role will agriculture play in the new Cap and Trade system in Ontario? Come out and discuss the potential opportunities for farmers to provide carbon offsets through farming methods that sequester carbon in the soil, say organizers. The CFFO is concerned about the long-term preservation and improvement of the quality of farmland soil. Good soil stewardship improves yields, prevents erosion and loss of nutrients into the environment, improves drainage and waterholding capacity and sequesters carbon. Understanding of soil stewardship is always improving, says the CFFO. “We want your input on soil-related policy issues.” To RSVP, call Gerry Rook at 613-635-3855, Gerald Vander Ploeg at 613-432-4719 or Wayne Senior at 613-832-2480. DanahKae is a local duo currently on tour in the United States sharing their beautiful sound with our neighbours in the south.
DanahKae touring the States, to host show April 15 in Arnprior Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
A soulfully sweet sound has left Arnprior, but only temporarily. The musical duo DanahKae, who call the Prior their home, are currently on tour in the United States but will be returning soon to share their music locally. The duo is comprised of Danah-Lee Krieger and Kae Roberts. Krieger grew up in Arnprior/Braeside and went to university in Alberta to study music. She is now back in the area teaching music and that is where the musical connection was made with Roberts. “Kae is a student of mine and I became her voice teacher,” explained Krieger. “There was just something with her voice … Two years ago I asked her if she wanted to write together and now it’s history.” They describe themselves as a ‘folk infused adult contemporary vocal duo ensemble.’ Musically speaking they both say Jan Arden is a huge influence to them. Krieger credits Celine Dion as another influence and for Roberts she has also been influenced by Shelby Lynne. They released their debut album ‘Wishing for Easy’ in the fall at a release party in Calabogie. “It was a sold-out show, it was packed,” said Krieger. They are currently working on their second album. The pair has been very busy since the show performing in Toronto and they also held a fundraiser for the Arnprior and District Humane Society, which raised $500. U.S. TOUR They are currently on the road and will travel to Georgia, Florida, Nashville, North Carolina and New York before returning
home in April. “We are really excited because people have been really receptive to our music,” said Krieger just before leaving on the tour. While in Nashville they will be doing a fundraiser with all proceeds going to a local cat rescue at Healing Well Yoga. They have done a few fundraisers now and they always want the proceeds to go back to help animals. “It’s so great to see it unfolding before our eyes,” said Krieger. “The yoga studios have been very receptive to our music because our music is very heart-centred and it flows beautifully with a slow flow yoga.” Also during the tour they will be meeting with radio executives and networking with other musicians. They are not looking to sign with a label because Krieger says they like staying independent. “This tour, we are really excited to meet people and share our music. We really want to reach out to people; our music is something most people can relate to,” said Krieger. “It’s very heart-centred with matters of the heart.” LOCAL SHOW
Once back from their tour, they will host a Namasta and Cabernet with DanahKae show to support an animal cause yet to be determined. The show will be at the Rising Lotus Yoga in Arnprior on April 15. Krieger notes Rising Lotus’ Tina Lyons has been very supportive of their music. “She has been a driving force with karma concerts and giving us a place to share our music.” For more on the duo, visit www.danahkae. ca.

Perth takes advantage of rowdy Royals to take lead in semi-finals Laurie Weir

2-1 to even the score. Perth shook off the loss – their first of 2016 which snapped a 21-game winning streak – and returned the favour in game three with a 6-3 win to take a 2-1 series lead. “This series is what we expected very competitive and very intense,”
said head coach Michael McLean. He said the team appreciates the home town crowds, which are expected to swell over the course of the week as the Blue Wings will host game five on Friday night, 7:30 p.m. after game four is played in Stittsville tonight (Thursday),
“They (the fans) have made a huge difference for us in these playoffs,” he said, as he anticipates a large crowd to pack the arena Friday, predicting it “will be the largest in 25 to 30 years.” The series winner will play Casselman, which swept Ottawa West. R0013743247
They may have just received the wake-up call that was needed, but as the old adage goes, be careful what you wish for, as the Perth Wings are now sitting up and tak-
ing notice of the Stittsville Royals as they duke out their CCHL Tier 2 semi-final showdown. After handily defeating the Royals 7-3 in their first game of this seven-game series last week, Stittsville rebounded during game two to edge the high flying Blue Wings

Peewee Packers claim playoff championship over rival Arnprior Peewee Packers won the District 5 league and playoff championship, culminating with a final round match-up against the regular season’s second-place Muskrat Voyageurs. The first game of the series saw the Packers hemming the Voyageurs in their zone for large portions of the game with fantastic puck cycling led by all forwards, including Ryan Mackenzie, Ryland Hill and Ryan Klinkenberg. The Voyageurs goalie had to be on his game as he faced a flurry of shots, but on this night it was only Jake Pianosi who managed to beat him. He buried a couple great feeds from Sam Dunn and Keaton McGrath to score the Packers’ only two goals. Those two scores proved enough because when the Voyageurs did get their chances they had to face Aiden Regan in the Packer net. He made some very timely saves and was backed up by the rock solid defensive group of Sam Pianosi, Grant Zeibarth, Brad Hogan and Matteo Nixon, who helped held the Voyagers to only one goal. Arnprior went on to sweep the series, ending on March 11 with a second-game 8-3 win in Cobden highlighted by a hat trick from

Cam Dorken, strong three-point performances from Ben Burnette, Jake Pianosi and Keaton McGrath, as well as some outstanding goaltending by Tyler Klinkenberg who kept his team in the game early on and faced a barrage of shots in the first period as the Voyagers came out strongly. The coaches are extremely happy with the season and had this to say about this year’s team. “At the beginning of the season we asked the boys what goals they wanted to achieve this season and they came up with four big ones: finish number one in the league, win the championship, have the lowest goals against, and win a tournament. “To achieve their goals would require them to work hard and be selfless, strong teammates and they came through and saw to it that all their goals were met. Their season included big tournament wins in North Bay and Quebec City and in a much more competitive league this season they finished on top with the lowest goals against and won the championship. They certainly deserve to be as proud of themselves as we are of them.” The coaches also made special mention of their affiliate players, called up because a

late season injury to Connor Naismith. Playing a part in the team’s strong defensive core and season success, Packers affiliates Ethan Hanson, Ronin Muldoon and Joel Neville proved invaluable and were always willing to answer the call, even when that meant a rush
drive from one championship winning game to another. The Upper Ottawa Valley Minor Hockey League and playoff champion Packers are now off to the regional finals in Finch, beginning April 9.

Among the 48 participants bowling that day were members and friends of L’Arche Arnprior and some members of the Lochwinnoch Presbyterian Church. Next year L’Arche hopes to include even more members in the wider community of Arnprior and Renfrew County. Each participant was responsible for finding friends or family who might sponsor them for the day’s event. The purpose of the bowl-a-thon was to raise awareness, as well as funds for an improved quality of life and meaningful days for members of L’Arche Arnprior. Together the bowlers and their sponsors raised $3,240. This was more than had been anticipated for a first-time event. It was inspiring to see such generosity from the participants and sponsors. Thank you everyone who participated. The day was completely dependent upon you and “you made it wonderful. Thank you also to the sponsors of the participants and corporate sponsorships from George Jackson Toyota in Renfrew and Bank of Nova Scotia in Arnprior.

IN LOVING Memory of a Dear Husband & Father. Norman Eady who passed away March 23, 2014. God looked around his garden, And found an empty place. Then he looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain. He knew that you would never, Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So he closed your eyes, And whispered please be mine. It broke our hearts to lose you Norman, But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Lovingly Remembered by wife Willis. Daughters, Erin -Rhea & families.

Lenten activities, sports and outdoor fun have kept students busy in the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board’s Arnprior elementary schools. The St. Joseph’s school community in Arnprior has been active with special events since returning from Christmas break, reported vice-principal Derek Lennox in a news release. On Feb. 9, school council hosted a pancake supper serving both school and community members. The student group that participated in WE Day this year has been busy with a number of initiatives, including a used battery collection and a Share Lent project. For the Share Lent project students are busy organizing a Minute to Win It activity to raise money for the Free the Children campaign. An afternoon of activities will include games as seen on the television show with students donating small change to assist with the global fundraiser. On the local side of the Lenten journey the Grade 7 class has organized a food drive to support the Arnprior and District Food Bank. Students are also busy with winter carnival activities including
a skating day for the kindergarten classes, bowling and swimming activities for the primary students, and skiing, snowboarding and tubing at Mount Pakenham for junior and intermediate students. The gymnasium is always full of activity - Grade 7 and 8 boys and girls have been practicing for basketball and badminton tournaments. This year, students underwent a process of nicknaming the school St. Joseph’s Guardians. “The new nickname can be seen throughout the school on the new school wear as well as in our gymnasium where it is proudly displayed on our new protective equipment, said Lennox. At St. John XXIII Catholic School in Arnprior, students and staff celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a pancake snack by the hard working school council. The gym was transformed into a restaurant where students were able to eat and chat with friends. Students and staff celebrated Ash Wednesday with Mass at St. John Chrysostom church. Fr. John Burchat led the celebration and reminded everyone that during Lent we are called to give, fast and pray. Part of the annual Lenten journey at St. John XXIII includes

raising money for its sister school in Antonci, Dominican Republic. “We believe Lent is a perfect opportunity to practise almsgiving and share with those less fortunate than ourselves, said principal Heidi Fraser. “Our fundraising efforts are well underway with a mini sticks day and music over the PA system. We are going to have a popcorn day and a dance too, she added. The Campbells worked with the Grade 3-4 class, introducing the new robotics program. “It was a hit, said Fraser. On Feb. 26, primary students had their annual winter carnival, going to the movies and engaging in a variety of events at the school, while the junior group had a great day of skiing and snowboarding at Calabogie Peaks. At St. John XXIII, the arts have always been an important part of instructional practices. This year is no exception - for a week in April, Tina Le Moine will work with students in creative multimedia workshops. St. John XXIII will hold the For the Love of Art Show in May. Local artisan Lesley McMann will work with all classes to create artworks to display for the school community.

Knights of the Round Table enjoy annual medieval feast Boyd MacLaren
McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society
As in medieval times the feast at the Renfrew Legion Hall on Feb. 27 had the entertainment in the middle of the room with all guests seated around the outside. The McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society started the evening with a knighting ceremony, as may have been done in the past. The Black Knight (Mackie McLaren) and the Red Knight (Hal Leitch) presented a mercenary, Bhoid of Lorn (Boyd MacLaren), to King Arthur (Dai Bassett) and Saint David (Rev. Jim Kirpatrick) to be knighted. He had been sent down from Dal Riata to join King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. Other entertainment saw troubadour Bill Connelly singing about the ghosts of Caerleon Castle and Bard Doug Fleming tell a story. Jan Oaks, one of the mummers, performed a medieval style dance while a second mummer, Chris Kyte, auctioned off some of the husbands including King Arthur (Dai Bassett) The king also told some Welsh stories and sang for those assembled.
JIM AUSTIN/SUBMITTED
Troubadour Bill Connelly of White Lake participates in the medieval feast. The organizers are grateful for all of the above. As well, the Mcnab & District Celtic Heritage Society thanks everyone who helped in so many ways with the Medieval feast (without attempting to name everyone in case someone is missed). However, the society does want to thank the Renfrew Legion for being gracious
hosts and for all the help. Gramercy (thank you) to our special guests Saint David (Rev Jim Kirkpatrick) and King Arthur (Dai Bassett), who truly turned the event into a real medieval style evening. Gramercy to piper Alan Cole who patently piped every course to Saint David and the king for their approval and to
our jester Michline Blondin who bravely risked her life to make sure the food was not “poisoned” before the king allowed it to be served to everyone. (That was one of the court jester’s jobs in medieval times.) Many thanks to all entertainers, especially Kyle Felhaver, the minstrel who jumped in with his mandolin every time there was a lull. The society is grateful to the help the newspapers gave it by publishing stories every week in the hopes of catching the public’s interes, to the radio stations and to all who came out and enjoyed themselves. A very special thank you to photographer Jim Austin, who not only provided wonderful picture memories, some of which are in this paper, but also took on being the Abbott of Glastonberry Abbey and brought some of his monks to serve food for the evening. It was a memorable evening, depicting, to some degree, the more pleasant things that went on in medieval times. Sometimes, during major festivals, the lords would throw feasts like this and offer their peasants and servants food, clothing, drinks and firewood. The local feast was prob-
ably somewhere between this and a grand feast but both in the great hall of the castle. Maybe next medieval feast you will want to join to see what we do. At this point in time the McNab & District Celtic Heritage Soci-
ety hasn’t decided which Celtic nation it will put in the spotlight next. When it does, you will be sure to have some stories about it in the lead-up to the event. Diolch (Welsh thank you).

Northcote School passes inspection with flying colours Two light taps on the door. I counted them. And then the door opened, and Miss Crosby, right in the middle of reading the Beatitudes, closed the Bible and put it on her desk. She, ramrod straight, nodded to us, and as one, the entire Northcote School enrolment rose and stood staring ahead at the front blackboard. Not a head turned, but we knew without a doubt the Inspector had come to make a call! We were all in awe of the Inspector, and knew Miss Crosby too, had for him the greatest respect, mixed in with a bit of fear. It was the Inspector who decided if the school was being run in proper fashion, and if the teacher was doing her job. After all she was being paid $250 a year! He walked right up to the front of the room, shook hands with Miss Crosby, who gave the slightest of nods, and in our best stage voices, we said, as if we were singing the words in the church choir, “Good Morning, Inspector.” He smiled out at us, a gold tooth

glittering when it caught the rays of the morning sun through the east window. I could see Cecil’s ears move up and down, a talent he had, but which had to be kept in check since Miss Crosby frowned on such behaviour. Especially in front of the Inspector! DREADED QUESTIONS
I immediately got a pain in the pit of my stomach. He would be examining every last scribbler, desk drawer, listen to us read, and what I dreaded most of all, he would fire a question to whomever he had in his eyesight, and delve into every subject we took at the Northcote School.

These questions could be about arithmetic, which scared the daylights out of me since that was one of my poorest subjects, or he could ask you to name the townships in Renfrew County. So we just had to sit it out, and wait. Miss Crosby examined our desk drawers at least once a week, so I knew he would find no fault there. Our books had to be neatly piled, and our pencils, ruler and eraser all in a neat pile or else we would have to take the entire drawer out, wipe it out with a cloth, and under her scrutiny neatly pack the drawer again. The Inspector and Miss Crosby were talking in whispers at the front of the room, and occasionally they would cast an eye down on us, who were sitting there shaking in our shoes. Then the questions began. Of course, bad Marguirite was dying to be singled out and asked a question, and she was squirming in her seat like she had ants in her pants. But the Inspector ignored her,

and picked out my friend Joyce and then Velma, both of whom were smart as whips, and I could see Miss Crosby’s shoulders relax. They had no trouble answering the questions, and he then moved to the senior classes, and seemed satisfied that they too had been ably taught by Miss Crosby. PRAYER OF THANKS
He pulled his watch out of his vest pocket, took note of the time, shook Miss Crosby’s hand, nodded to us, and headed for his coat at the back door. For several minutes Miss Crosby just stood at her desk. She would flicker her eyelids a bit, and I knew without a doubt she was silently giving up a prayer of thanks. It was coming on to lunchtime, and we had yet to have our morning recess. Miss Crosby let out a long sigh, and then a smile broke out across her face, just like it did after we had held a successful Christmas concert. “I think we’ll have a long recess
this morning, and roll right into lunch. So get your clothes on and go outside. Then you can have your lunch later.” I mentally added up the time we would be away from our desks, and as close as I could figure it was well over an hour! Cecil moved his ears up and down, and cracked his toes in his gumrubbers, and Miss Crosby paid no attention at all. I was pretty sure I saw Piano Joe put a piece of gum in his mouth, and bad Marguirite, not to be outdone, took an apple off the lunch table that didn’t belong to her. Miss Crosby ignored everything, as if unruly behaviour was a common occurrence every day. It was amazing to me what you could get away with after the Inspector came to call. Lynne Zander of the Valley Vintage Advanced Toastmasters Club qualified to compete ilast weekend in the division table topics championship in French and English.
Members of the various Ottawa Valley Toastmasters Clubs recently competed in both club and area contests. Three of the clubs got together on Feb. 10 for a combined club contest at the Arnprior District High School library. Seven members from Arnprior, Renfrew and Valley Vintage Advanced Toastmasters represented their various clubs in the International Speech and Table Topics Contests. As judges were brought in from Ottawa, it was felt that having all the contests on the same night would be the best use of everyone’s time. Each club had their own contests. First-place winners of each of the contests advanced to the Area 10 contest on Feb. 20 at the Arnprior Public Library. On Feb. 20, the winners from all the club contests competed for the opportunity to advance to the Division B Contest, which were to be held on March 19 in Ottawa. Winners were Tracy Franken (Renfrew Toastmasters) for International Speech and Lynne Zander (Valley Vintage) who will compete for Table Topics in both English and French and also in the French International Speech Contest
The Arnprior Toastmasters club table topics contest was won by Lynne Zander. From left are contest chair Francine Fortin, area 10 director James Johnston, Zander, Lenore Whelan (second) and Brad Dota (third).

Motorhead tribute band to play Arnprior A Motorhead tribute band will rock Arnprior this Saturday, March 26. The Toronto band Motorheadache will play the John St. Pub in what is being billed as “a night of loudness and everything that is Motorhead.” Promoter David Berardi notes that it will be a special event coming so soon after the passing of the legendary Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister in December. Formed in 2009, Motörheadache aims to capture the “true vibe of a Motörhead concert,” playing the band’s classic songs from the 1976 to 1982 era.
THIS WEEK’S FEATURE
Nick Popovic (Lemmy Clonemister) has Lemmy’s Marlboro and Jack Daniels gravel voice. He is joined by ‘Fast’ Al Hunter on lead guitar and Niall Mellors on drums. “Go see Motörheadache, you’ll be amazed,” says ex-Motorhead guitarist ‘Fast’ Eddie Clarke. “Great band. Keep kicking asses,” said Motorheadbangers World Fan Club president Alan Burridge. Tickets cost $10 and are available online at eventbrite.ca. Or in person at Steve and Denni’s Restaurant or by calling 613-552-0074.
