Mounting opposition to a proposed radioactive waste site has Arnprior council calling for a public meeting. Groups such as the Council of Canadians, Ottawa Riverkeeper, Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, and Old Fort William Cottagers’ Association are concerned that a nuclear waste disposal facility near Chalk River would pose hazardous to a water source for more than one million downriver. The project, called the Near Surface Disposal Facility, by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), would store mostly low-level waste (primarily demolition waste) accumulated from the decommissioning of more than 100 buildings at Chalk River Laboratories. A small amount of mixed waste from sources across Canada - including other nuclear sites and hospitals and universities – will be included at the 30-hectare location. Up to one million cubic metres of radioactive waste could be stored, but only 360,000 are expected. It currently houses 267,000. Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Meredith Brown has numerous questions regarding the plan. “If there is contamination of our waters, what are the implications for the aquatic ecosystem and for the million Canadians who swim, drink, fish the Ottawa River?” she said in a news release. “I am painfully aware of the need to find responsible ways to safely deal with the radioactive wastes that have been accumulating at the site over the last 90 years.” Located about one kilometre from the river, and almost completely surrounded by water, the waste site would have a mound up to 25 metres high. It is atop a major fault line and fractured

and porous bedrock where groundwater flows rapidly into the river. Concerns about CNL, a consortium of multinational corporations, has also arisen. In 10 years time when its contract expires, after some revenue is generated for the federal government, the group could walk away. Its long-term interest in the land and surrounding neighbours is in doubt. The ability to influence decision-makers is also tenuous, according to the Council of Canadians. They point out that Harper-era changes to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act mean the project is not subject to cabinet approval. It is strictly in the domain of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). However, CNSC is a government agency led by Dr. Michael Binder, a long-time federal bureaucrat. Arnprior Mayor David Reid has followed the reports by various groups. While admitting he is no expert, he does put his faith in the regulation bodies that oversee the best interests of all Canadians. “I’m sure the right agencies are working on it,” Reid said. “I believe they’ll do the right thing.” Reeve Walter Stack, who sits on county council and has followed the issue more closely, said a lot of residents around town and elsewhere are interested in knowing more. He asked staff to organize a public meeting in a room larger than council chambers, and invite CNL to make a presentation. The meeting would need to take place fairly soon. On March 17 the project’s environmental assessment was completed. Residents have until May 17 to comment on it. After that, the facility could be up and working by the fall of 2018.

Council pay made Beautiful public during Monuments budget meetings DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Derek Dunn/Metroland

Detachment retiree

Karen Wren’s more than 30 years of dedication to Arnprior’s detachment of the OPP is recognized during the March 27 council meeting. Mayor David Reid presents her with a token of appreciation, including a watch, for helping clients at the police station since 1985. She will retire when the service closes down and moves to Renfrew. Constables will remain on site, but administration services such as criminal records check will not.

Wages for area municipal politicians were recently made public during budget deliberations. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett’s remuneration — including wages, mileage, and other expenses — totalled $24,619 last year. Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden’s came in at $20,189. Couns. Scott Brum, Heather Lang, and Mark MacKenzie’s were at about the $19,000 marker. Remuneration was higher at Arnprior council, where the population is slightly larger and many more services are offered. Mayor David Reid’s remuneration totalled $38,533. Reeve Walter Stack’s was $19,662. Coun. Dan Lynch, who doesn’t receive benefits, was paid $19,895. Couns. Lynn Grinstead, Tom Burnette, and

Frank Dugal were paid about $22,000 each. Stack has long said local legislators should be paid more in order to attract more people to participate. He especially wants younger people at Renfrew County council tables. He understands many are busy raising families, but if more money was offered it might sway some. Members of provincial parliament, such as Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, are paid $116,500 with no benefits. It does not include their office budget. Put in place in 2008, that pay remains the same until at least 2019. Members of federal parliament, such as Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, were given a pay raise last year to $170,400. Their benefits and office budgets bump that up further. According to Workopolis, the average wage for Canadian employees was just under $50,000 last year. Â Â

A window into the private lives of our native bees April 3 KAREN RUNTZ

Native bees deserve more buzz - not to be flippant about honeybees and the seriousness of their decline in Canada and around the world. The intent, rather, to cast some light on the amazing variety of native bees — some 4,000 in Ontario — and their less acknowledged role in the pollination of agricultural crops and flowering plants. Solitary by nature First, some background on these “other bees.” The majority of native bee species are solitary. Unlike honeybees, who live in colonies, most native bees tunnel in soil or nest in cavities and stems. Solitary bees do not produce honey or wax. They are relatively docile and not apt to sting. And they are immune from the mites decimating honeybee colonies. Fuzzy bumble bees are a familiar example, identifiable from an early age. There are 40 kinds in Canada. But it’s not all sunny days ahead for them either. Several of these species—like our Yellow-banded Bumble Bee, an important pollinator of a variety of agricultural crops and native plant species—are also disappearing. The species at risk public registry where it is listed as

a species of special concern says it has recently declined by at least 34 per cent in areas of southern Canada. Even meat and dairy production are dependent on bees, as alfalfa, a big component in hay (or feed) in Ontario, relies on pollinators, says pollination biologist Susan Chan in Oshawa This Week. “We don’t need bees to make hay but we need bees to set the seed to grow the alfalfa to make the hay,” she adds. Birds, rodents and bears also rely on bees to pollinate the plants that produce the seeds and fruit they eat. And even our much-maligned dandelions have a link in this “giving” chain. Bees need food from early spring to late fall and the dandelion’s loud flowers offer an early spring tonic of nectar for bees and other beneficial insects. It’s a “pat my back, I’ll pat yours” exchange— but not to be taken literally when it comes to us and bees! Bees need our help and we need theirs Getting close to native bees is an everyday experience for Jessica Forrest, an assistant professor of Biology at the University of Ottawa who studies bees and pollination. Her research focuses on the ecology and evolution of plant-

pollinator interactions and the population biology of wild bees. Dr. Forrest’s lab is currently investigating the consequences of warmer summers, variable springtime temperatures and snowpack reductions for bee survival and fitness. We’ll hear more about her findings when she shares “The private lives of native bees” at the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club April 3 meeting. In this presentation, Dr. Forrest will give an overview of the natural history of bees, with a

focus on the Canadian fauna. She will also summarize some of her lab’s recent findings on the factors affecting wild bee populations—including flowers, parasites, and temperatures—and discuss ways to support local pollinator communities. Don’t miss The Private Lives of Our Native Bees. County NFU names new president The president, vice-president and directors changed for the Renfrew County National Farmers Union following the Monday, March 6 annual general meeting at the Barr Line Community Centre. Prior to the election of officers, Chris Wooding of Ironwood Organics near Gananoque was the guest speaker. He spoke to a small crowd, due to the inclement weather, about direct marketing gardening. Following a 40-minute presentation, Wooding answered a few questions. Tony Straathof stepped down after four years as the local’s leader. “Thank you to all the members, especially the executive, for all your hard work,” he said, adding, “It’s made being the president easier.” Throughout the four years, Straathof has dealt with many issues, locally, provincially and nationally. He was elected to the provincial board and the national board. While he may no longer be the local president, he remains a member of the

national board, having been re-elected to the board at the provincial annual general meeting held in Ridgetown this past weekend. All positions for the local executive were acclaimed. Tim Tabbert moved up to president and Patrick Carter is now the vicepresident. Directors are Marshall Buchanan, Bruce Karlstrom, Dave Mackay and Straathof. Daniel Stermach is the youth adviser and Lauretta Rice is the women’s adviser. Directorsat-large are Margaret Robertson, Bob Dobson and Robbie and Christina Anderman. Connie Tabbert was appointed secretary, a position she has held since 2014. As the new president for the organization, Tabbert

Town offers WETT inspections TOWN OF ARNPRIOR

The Town of Arnprior is pleased to announce that the town’s chief building official, Jacques Benoit, is a Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT) certified inspector. Wood burning appliances must be installed to specific installation codes and safety standards established by government (CAN B365-01). To ensure these existing installations are in compliance, they should be inspected by a WETT certified inspector. The town will now offer WETT inspections for wood burning appliances. All new installations do require a building permit and will be inspected accordingly. If your home is equipped with a wood burning appliance such as a wood stove, wood-fired furnace, pellet stove or wood-burning fireplace and you have never had a WETT inspection, you may want to have an inspection to ensure the safety of you and your family. A WETT inspection is commonly requested by insurance companies when there is a new installation of a wood-burning appliance, when an existing one has undergone a modification or when you purchase a property equipped with a wood burning appliance. Never enough hockey The Stanley Cup has been sighted in Ottawa. No the Senators haven’t yet grasped hockey’s holy grail, but the mug has been touring the town. And just over a year ago it was sighted in downtown Renfrew as the Birthplace NHA/ NHL Museum brought the coveted trophy to town. The museum also has three items at the Canadian Museum of History as the new exhibit in Quebec marks 100 years of the NHL and 125 years since Lord Stanley gifted the Cup to hockey champions. It’s a sign of the passion Valley folk feel for Stanley. That love of hockey glory runs deep. You can see it in the eyes of the Arnprior Packers as they lost game seven of their first round playoff series to the Richmond Royals last week. Or it was truly evident in the dedication of many volunteers who were trying to bring hockey glory to Cobden as they made the top 10 in the Kraft Hockeyville contest. The love of hockey and Stanley runs from coast-to-cost, from big city Ottawa to small town Arnprior and Renfrew. To see it people will travel near and far. Rideau Hall hosted the Cup during March break and the lineups to have photos taken with

the famous silverware snaked through the old building’s hallways. No one seemed to mind the wait, and the hockey fans there were giddy when they reached the front of the line and got a chance to touch a piece of history. The Cup also visited the site of a future permanent monument to the trophy at Sparks and Elgin streets. Some NHL greats and the Governor General were on hand to break ground at the site last week. The city’s residents and visitors will soon be able to mug for photos with a replica of the Stanley Cup. More passion. And in the coming weeks we’ll enjoy the lateseason drama of the NHL and get behind our Ottawa Senators run to the playoffs. Bars will fill up. Elgin Street will turn red – the colour of passion. After we enjoy our warmer months and the nation’s 150th birthday celebrations, we’ll be able to slap on toques and mittens to watch those same Sens take on the rival Montreal Canadiens at TD Place. Stanley will no doubt be there on Dec. 16 too, as the NHL’s first game – played between Ottawa and Montreal in Ottawa on Dec. 19, 1917 – is celebrated. It’s true, despite having just made it through one winter, many will be looking forward to the next one. Yes, we’re just a little hockey crazy.

Help fight cancer in Daffodil Month To the editor:

When loved ones are diagnosed with or die of cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or honour them. This April, the Canadian Cancer Society wants the people of Renfrew County to know there is something you can do. This April, by volunteering just a few hours of your time selling daffodil pins or canvassing your neighbourhood in support of the Daffodil Month campaign, local residents can help save lives and support people who are living with cancer. Money raised during Daffodil Month helps local patients and their families living with

more than 100 different types of cancer. With these donations, the Canadian Cancer Society funds life-saving research and support services, as well as other important work, so that fewer Canadians are affected by cancer. Volunteers are essential to the success of the Daffodil Month campaign. We need you! If you can spare a few hours during this critical fundraising time, please call our office at 613-7352571. If you are unable to volunteer, you can still join the fight this April by donating money and wearing a daffodil pin in support of Daffodil Month. Fond memories spring tradition at Manion’s Flower Shop To the editor:

Every year at this time, particularly on the cold, grey, wet days that often come before Easter, I fondly remember a scene of warmth and colour that brought great delight to my family - the chicks in the window of Manion’s Flower Shop. The shop, owned by Marjorie and Ed Manion, has been closed for many years but it was located where Danny Mac’s is now, along the route of the almost daily walks from our house to run our errands in downtown Arnprior. I still remember the delight I shared with my kids as we walked by the store for the first time

to see the front window full of baby chicks under the warm glow of the lamps. During that time people would stop to gaze and smile at this scene day and night. If the store was open, you were welcome to go in and Ed would always make sure that the kids got their turn to hold a chick. It was a wonderful tradition that continued for many years. Thank you Marjorie for making a memory for our family and many others I’m sure. I just wanted you to know that it hasn’t been forgotten after all these years.

DOMINANCE RANKING

But it is still a bit early in the year for mating to take place and it is likely that male turkeys are now only sorting out their dominance rankings. The shoving contests that I witnessed are the initial component of a fight. Male turkeys fight to gain status in their social rankings, and those interactions can turn deadly for their legs are equipped with some pretty nasty weapons. Midway up the back of their tarsometatarsus, the lower part of their leg that is the avian equivalent of our ankle and foot bones combined into one structure, is a triangular projection called the “spur.” During aggressive interactions, the males violently kick at each, trying to slice the other with their blades. During an aggressive interaction, a male wild turkey will use its beak to grab the back of an opponent’s neck and try to force its head to the ground. Before an interaction escalates to this level, however, there are some interesting visual signals that are given. A weird fleshy protuberance, the snood, arises from the forehead and hangs

The many draws for raffles, 50/50 and an autographed football were completed by Gaston Moreau, entertainer with assistance from Patti Jennings, board of directors ABMSH, Kendra Marshall and Payne O’Hara both volunteers and visitors to the town from Watertown, NY. Raffle prizes were won by: Peggy Borsoski, Irene Bruce, Heather Mathier and Michelle Wall. 50/50 won by Joe Brennan and Lauren Reid the autographed football.

Without these folks as well as many other community minded citizens these types of events would not be possible. Thank you to the following local businesses and their leaders for contributing towards this fundraiser: Our main sponsor Mama Rosa’s, Danny Mac’s, PJ’s Restaurant and Jim’s Restaurant. Thank you to our other awesome volunteers who either helped with the setup on Sunday or worked throughout the day in the kitchen and assisting: Nancy Paquette, Susie Smithson, Kevin Osborne, Heather Campbell, Shane Smith, Ron LeDrew, Judy and Ed Hill, Gib McMullan, Kathleen Bender, Pat Washington, Nancy Strong, Denise Belanger, Brenda Vaughan, Regina Palmer, Beth Deveaux, and Colleen Blimkie, Special thanks to the two gentlemen who kept everyone entertained with their musical talents, the team of Gaston Moreau and Rick Leben. you to the donators of the many raffle prizes. Raffle winners: Beryl Robinson, Michelle Eddie, Peggy Barsoski, Irene Bruce and Heather Mathier. Thank you and congratulations to all the winners. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS URGENTLY NEEDED

“It would not be a far stretch to say that we are in a mini crisis mode for our volunteer driving program,” Dennis Harrington, executive director. Our community volunteer driving program volunteer drivers is at its lowest it has ever been, at present we have eight volunteer drivers compared to our average of 20 drivers. With the low number of volunteer resources our existing drivers are, at times, each doing two to three Out of Town Medi-

cal trips per day. Even with their dedication we are on average turning down and unable to fulfill medical transportation to 29 clients per month. As our volunteer driving program relies solely on the generosity and community spirit of individuals willing to take up this cause help residents of our community who do not have means of transportation get to their medical appointments outside of Arnprior. Our volume of call has increased in the past five years from providing an average of 250 out of town drives to now providing 600 plus drive per month with ever increasing limited resources. If you recently retired with the ability to offer some time to our agency and clients we would appreciate hearing from you. Please contact Margaret Bourk, volunteer co-ordinator at 613-623-7981 or visit Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program Inc. at 106 McGonigal St. West for a volunteer application. The process is very easy and training will be provided to you.

Staff who reached a milestone of 10, 20, 25 or 35 years of service at Family and Children´s Services of Renfrew County (FCSRC) were honoured by their fellow colleagues in a ceremony full of fellowship, anecdotes and appreciation for their long term work in the organization. At the ceremony in January, 11 members of FCSRC were congratulated for their commitment to their work and received accolades from another staff member highlighting their contributions to the community, as well as the unique characteristics that make them valuable and important for the service delivery: commitment, inclusiveness, imagination, ability to keep calm in difficult situations, creativity and sense of humor, among others, where the features most mentioned during the meeting. One of the celebrated was manager of developmental services, Marianne Taylor, for her 35 years of work. Taylor, a graduate in Social Science at the University of Ottawa, started at 1981 as an adult protection service worker, before FCSRC evolved into a multi-services agency. She has, therefore, seen many changes during the years.

“When I started working it was legal to pay women less for the same job and there was no maternity leave. Today we have equal opportunities,” she said. Taylor added that the paradigm of work with vulnerable people has also changed for the better. Another member of the staff with a long history in service is Ann Hubert, an administrative assistant who was recognized for her 25 years of work. She started at the agency as a part-time receptionist and since then she had evolved into recruiting foster parents and adoption disclosure. “I really love my job. At FCSRC everyone I work with is a friend, from the bottom to the top,” said Hubert. Susan Kirk, supervisor of behaviour and speech, was also recognized for her 25 years of work, while resource worker Rhonda Summers celebrated 20 years at FCSRC. Tracey Laichalk from school services, behaviour consultants Lainey McCaffrey and Sarah McGrath-Swant, resource worker Cynthia Racine, supervisor of the adolescent team Michael Dalton, Steven West from school services and adoption worker Sabina Clemmer were all recognized for their 10 years of service at FCSRC.

ment Suites, M. Sullivan and Son, Canadian Tire, and Ontario Power Generation. Since taking over the practice of retiring physician Dr. Mark Robson in the summer of 2016, Dr. Michael Fishman and Dr. Hang Shi have met with the majority of Dr. Robson’s patients, and have begun to roster community members searching for a local family doctor.

On April 8 at 2 p.m. the Arnprior Public Library, in co-operation with the Canadian Peace Initiative, is hosting a long-time resident of the Ottawa Valley for a book-signing event. Ben Hoffman and his wife Ann (Suter) grew up in Pembroke. They lived in Eganville and Arnpior with their sons Evan and Warren. With Ann at his side to coach and support their many life decisions, Ben’s remarkable career started in the correctional system, then mental health in Renfrew County, after which he created one of Canada’s first mediation companies in Ottawa. In 2000 he became director of conflict resolution at The Carter Center in Atlanta, working closely with President Jimmy Carter. Ben has now written a moving, passionate memoir, The Violence Vaccine. From his childhood as a born-again Christian to an international peace mediator, his story is gripping. He challenges us to avoid the mistake of believing that love and caring makes us weak; that more of everything is good; and that power over others leads to the good life. His work has brought hope and expanded possibilities to people in very difficult situations, from the personal to the international. His thoughtful recounting of his experience in many books he has authored has been instrumental in developing nonviolent models to resolving violent conflict. The Violence Vaccine is a book that speaks to each of us in “times like these.”On April 8 Ben will read excerpts and there will be an opportunity for questions and getting your copy of his book personally notated. Arnprior wrestlers see success at Montreal tournament ARNPRIOR WRESTLING TEAM

On March 18, coach Kevin Mayhew of the Arnprior Wrestling Team attended the Montreal Open Wrestling Tournament with six of his wrestlers. It was an exciting day! For some of the wrestlers, this is their first year wrestling and only their second tournament – but you would never know it. Each wrestler placed in their respective age and weight category. Tian Basiala wrestled in the novice age group, against teammate Zweh Elmore. Both boys wrestled extremely well. Tian was able to win the match with a pin, winning gold. Zweh took second place, bringing home silver. Zeek Elmore and Tristan McLachlan wrestled as tykes, in the same weight category. Each wrestler had two matches. Zeek lost his first match, but won his second against Tristan. The match between Tristan and Zeek was close and went the full four minutes. Zeek gained

some points toward the end of the match and won, bringing home silver. Tristan placed in third place and came home with bronze. In her novice category, April Toupin only had one match, which she lost, finishing in second place and coming home with silver. Katie McLachlan had three matches in her kid division. Her first match was close, but with coach Kevin in her corner, she won. The following two matches, Katie won with a pin, bringing home gold. As a parent, it was a very exciting and proud day. It was wonderful to see the dedication and sportsmanship to the sport their coach has instilled in them and the progress of the younger ones just starting. Congratulations to Arnprior Wrestling team members Tian, first, Zweh, second, Zeek, second, Tristan, third, April, second, and Katie, first and Coach Kevin Mayhew. Wishing them continued success in their upcoming tournaments.

There must be something in the ice-water, because southern Renfrew county is producing some of Eastern Ontario’s best hockey players in recent years. Of those entering their late teen years, Arnprior’s Liam Hawel and David Silye play junior in Guelph and Nanaimo, B.C., respectively, and are expected to have long careers in the sport. But they are the elder statesmen who can be said to have paved the way for at least three younger boys who are ripping up the region’s top midget league. Each year Hockey Eastern Ontario’s Under 18 AAA league hands out five awards in a variety of categories. This year, the most valuable player (MVP), the top prospect, and the top rookie were claimed by kids from Arnprior, Renfrew, and Cobden.

Ryland Mosley of the Carleton Place Canadians is the 2017 MVP. Born in 2000, the Arnprior native finished tied for first overall in league scoring with 56 points (20 goals, 36 assists) in 45 regular season games. He has 100 points in 97 games in the league. In a press release announcing the win, the league said: “Mosley is a high-skilled forward who can make plays at high speed as well as show good poise in tight to make things happen. (And he) is able to separate himself from defenders in front of the net to find openings to shoot, knock in rebounds, or even get his stick on pucks for tip-ins. “When on his games, he can be a real thorn for the opposition to deal RYLAND MOSLEY with.” “I saw it on Twitter. I was really exMosley stopped by the Nick Smith Centre where he played hockey until cited,” Mosley said of the award. “I knew I was up there in points, peewee, before heading off to a year but I wasn’t expecting it.” of AA, then the rest at AAA. His hope is to join the OHL like Hawel, but would also be pleased to play next year with Carleton Place’s junior A team. skills at the rink. Mosley is grateful to parents Stephen and Leesa for spurring him on and providing countless driving hours. He also appreciates all the coaches along the way, especially Todd Clarke of Renfrew who “pushes me to be better and knows my strengths and weaknesses.” Mosley is also impressed with two other area players who are a year younger. Simon Rose of the Pembroke Lumber Kings is this year’s top prospect. The Renfrew-born defenceman finished third in goal scoring among blueliners with 10, notching 21 points in 39 games. “Rose is a smart player on both sides of the puck who makes quick smart decisions in transition,” according to the league. “He is an excellent defender with good size who has a smooth stride and poise while carrying the puck.” It describes his one-on-one defensive ability as “fantastic” for closing the gap quickly with his long reach. Rose participates in St. Joseph’s High School’s hockey program with the league’s top rookie, Jack Quinn of Cobden.

Cobden player named top rookie Quinn, a forward with the Kanata Lasers, finished third overall in league scoring at 52 points (28 goals, 24 assists) in 45 games. The clutch player also nabbed a league-leading nine game-winning goals. “Quinn is an offensive forward with high-end puck skills and very impressive vision,” the league said. “He plays a strong two-way game and his strong skating and vision

allow him to get to open ice to make plays. “Although not the biggest player, Quinn still has the strength and work ethic to win open ice puck battles. He has the potential to be a real force moving forward once he adds more strength to his frame.” Mosley said Rose and Quinn are special players with bright futures. student Jesse Dick’s play. Dick often quarterbacked the power play with Pembroke this year, though a rookie. So, is there something in Renfrew county’s ice-water? “There must be,” Mosley said, laughing, then offering advice to younger kids. “Keep working hard and learning as much as you can when you are young. And have lots of fun. It becomes time-consuming and if you aren’t having fun, there isn’t any point doing it.”

CARD OF THANKS

CARD OF THANKS

Card of Thanks In Memory of Robert ‘Bob’ Edwards We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our family, friends and neighbours for the tremendous outpouring of support during our time of grief in the loss of our husband, father, Poppa and Poppa Bob. We were overwhelmed by the many expressions of sympathy: food offerings, phone calls, cards, visits, online condolences, memorial donations and flowers. Each and every gesture was a source of comfort for us. The amazing attendance at the funeral home, funeral and luncheon were a testament to how much Bob was loved. He loved life, loved everyone he met and treated everyone like family. Thank you to Reverend Valerie Kelly for traveling from Kingston to perform the funeral. Bob enjoyed joking with you every year at the pancake dinner. Thank you to Sterling Bennett for providing the music at the funeral and to the choir at the St. John’s Anglican Church. Special thanks to good friend, Hugh Colton for delivering the eulogy and to Gary and Nora Brown for contributing special memories. Thank you to nephew Steven Bennett for writing a wonderful tribute as well. A big thank you to the honorary pallbearers, Ed Strickland, Dick Magill, Hugh Colton, Steve Commodore, Steve Hughes, Gary Brown and pallbearers Steven Bennett, Adam DeLisle, Dale Edwards, Randy Edwards, David Edwards and Carl Lackey. Extra special thanks to the staff of Lannin Funeral Home: Dale, Alex and Ryan. Dale, we know how hard this was for you being one of Bob’s friends and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the dignified and compassionate treatment along with all of the extra touches and hand holding you provided. Alex and Ryan, thank you for being so attentive, helping us make decisions and being there for us every step of the way. You treated us like family and for that we are ever thankful. Bob was a very special man and his passing has left a huge hole in our hearts. We are very blessed to have a very large and loving family, along with a huge network of friends and neighbours. Thank you all for having been a part of Bob’s life and for honoring him in his passing. ‘Close in our hearts you will always stay. Loved and remembered every day.’ Sincerely, Carole, Teresa, Barb, Vicki and family

freshly baked bread filled the bread box, sticky buns were in the warming closet over the Findlay Oval, and our best dishes, the only ones that matched and came from puffed wheat bags from Briscoe’s General Store, were washed and dried, just in case a fleck of dust was on any of them since they were last used. Of course, the red-checked oil cloth was taken off the table, rolled on a broom stick, and tucked under Mother and Father’s bed, and the white linen tablecloth Mother had brought from New York was freshly washed and ironed, with its matching napkins to be placed beside each plate. Father thought all the fussing was crazy. “She’s just from the farm like the rest of us,” he said. But Mother paid him no heed, and we five kids agreed with her. Having Miss Crosby for a weekend was very special indeed. There would be no walking home from school that Friday night. Father would bring the flat bottom sleigh with the one seat at the front where he and Miss Crosby would sit, while we kids clung to the back. And that HELP WANTED

day there would be no changing in our play clothes when we came home from school. We would stay dressed in what we had worn that morning, with the brothers pulling on bib-overalls over top to do the chores. Supper would be ready early and it would be ample. Roast pork from the smoke house, creamed potatoes, at least two vegetables, cabbage salad, and homemade pickles filled the table, hardly leaving enough room for our plates, and the little glass rack that held our spoons in the centre, which was only used when we had company. Often the teacher was treated to a Saturday night house party and she joined right in with euchre and the kitchen square dance. And of course, Sunday, the highlight of the weekend, was when she came to church with the family. I had no idea what church she really belonged to, but it wasn’t unusual to have her go to the United, the Anglican and the Lutheran all in the space of a few weeks. Mother would pack her an ample lunch when it was time to go back to school on Monday morning. And HELP WANTED

HELP WANTED

I would see her tuck in a small jar of pickles or jam as well. When we settled in for our morning classes, you would never know that Miss Crosby had been with us all weekend. We got no special treatment, no mention was made of her visit, but I would feel the glow of those few days long into the week ahead. I never knew how it was decided whose home the teacher would visit. Emerson said he thought everyone’s name was in a hat, and she drew one out every week. Audrey said that was pure nonsense. I didn’t care how it was decided. The teacher coming for the weekend was right up there with a visit from the minister, the Reeve of the County at election time, or old Doctor Murphy just dropping in because he happened to be out our way. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
