Teacher relays cancer story at campaign kickoff DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

She isn’t teaching at the high school right now, but Laura Carter returned to relay perhaps the most important lesson of the year. During day one of their fundraising campaign for the Canadian Cancer Society on April 6, about 400 students packed into the gymnasium at Arnprior District High School. It was an upbeat atmosphere, yellow and blue balloons were battered about; everyone who touched the mike got a hearty applause. Even a cancerthemed game of Jeopardy broke out, hosted by Alex Trebek prodigy Nick Edge, student council’s co-president and board trustee member. Relay for Life at ADHS raised how much last year, Edge asked; $16,000, to an eruption of applause. How many Relay events took place across Canada last year? 450. The most common form of cancer? Lung. Out of five, how many Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer: two. Sobering statistics aside, the event moved on to a short video. Rock music, a school track, hugs and beads, imitation candle flames in paper bags: the 12-hour team walk is a well-oiled event. When the lights came up again the cancer society’s Cam Whalen spoke, reminding students that ADHS

More applause. “I really believe that the youth today are going to raise the money to find a cure for cancer. I really believe that, Whalen said. “You have answered the call. By the time Carter was brought to

the floor, students were in a rollicking mood. And for good reason. ADHS has much to be proud of when it comes years of participating in Relay for Life. After Carter spoke, well over $200 was collected on the spot. But here’s where the good-time campaign met the reality for one of

the school’s own. “It was last June that I found out that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer, said the teacher from under her winter hat, pushing up her widerimmed glasses. “My brain started thinking of all these scary questions: Is the cancer spreading to other parts of my body? Will my daughter have breast cancer? Will the chemotherapy make me sick? A healthy lifestyle and no history of this type in her family made the shock even more jolting. That knowledge and the unanswered questions were backing her into a dark corner. She instead made a conscious effort to battle back against “this ugly disease. Chemotherapy went from October to January, taking her hair and lots of energy with it. Both are slowly returning. Her sense of humour never left. “Slowly but surely my grey hairs are returning, and I’m not even teaching right now so I can’t blame you kids! In simple and concise language, she explained how chemo and radiation therapy works to destroy cancer. With the science lesson over, she got to her main point. “What has made this long and difficult process manageable for me and my family is the strength that I’ve been able to draw on from my amazing support network.

The Downtown Revitalization Project is the Town’s largest single self-funded investment ever made towards the rehabilitation of aging infrastructure and will also provide an enhanced streetscape and improved accessibility in Arnprior’s downtown core. This project includes the reconstruction of sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains, roads, curbs, sidewalks, streetlights, and the traffic signals at the intersection of John Street and Elgin Street, and will continue to bring new life to Arnprior’s downtown streetscape with the placement of new trees, planters, and various forms of street furniture.

Large crowd supports business facing closure due to bylaw infractions Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

About 25 supporters of an Arnprior business jammed into council chambers to campaign against its closure for breaking bylaws. The April 10 public meeting heard from Antiques, Treasures & Treats owners Mike and Judy Wilson, and a handful of others who tried to convince council not to enforce existing bylaws they say will effectively cause the business to close. There were also 17 written comments presented and a petition with 1,130 names in support of the shop at 260 Elgin St. W., not far from town hall. Its popularity is undeniable, Mayor David Reid indicated, but it has exceeded the limits of the ‘home occupation’ rules in place to keep neighbours happy. The couple live on the premises, so as a home-based business it shouldn’t have the look and busyness of a commercial property. By placing

a flashing neon sign in the window (since removed), building a large shed (what the Wilsons call a barn) filled with more sale items, and selling edible products produced offsite, they’ve exceeded the bylaw. “I’m a bit conflicted by this one,” Reid said. “On the one hand I support the store. But I also support the home occupation bylaw as well. This (store) doesn’t have a lot of complaints, but if another does get into problems (the bylaw is necessary).” Judy provided a heartfelt explanation for why the business would fail if forced to move into commercial space. Product turnover would have to amp up to cover rent. Which means more time scourging area yard sales and elsewhere, plus possibly accepting lower quality. The couple didn’t purposely deceive the municipality, she added. They’ve always paid commercial taxes with none owing to

this day. Building permits were all in order. The storage shed appeared in advertisements and elsewhere. Asked why the shed became a

showroom, Judy said the original intention was for it to be a carver’s studio but sales increased too quickly. “We thought we had the

town’s full blessing. We want to do whatever it takes,” Judy said, adding that she knows council wants to portray an image that Arnprior is “open for business.”

Reid and others with the town are confident a compromise can be found. They will make a decision at an upcoming meeting, possibly on April 24.

Town of Arnprior lights it up blue, raises flag for autism awareness April 2 was proclaimed World Autism Awareness Day in the Town of Arnprior. The Town of Arnprior once again participated in the “Raise the Flag” and “Light it up Blue” initiatives to foster acceptance for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and support the day-to-day issues faced by people with autism and their families. On April 2, blue lights illuminated town hall and the Arnprior and District Museum clock tower. On April 3, a flag raising ceremony was held and the Autism Awareness flag was raised at town hall. In October, 2012, Bill S-206, An Act respecting World

Autism Awareness Day, was fast-tracked and passed in the House of Commons. This means that each and every year April 2 is recognized officially as World Autism Awareness Day in Canada. The passing of this bill demonstrates that Canadian lawmakers care about autism and autism awareness. Today, 1 in 94 children are diagnosed with autism in Canada. Through improved public awareness the message to the people and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder living in our community and the province at large, is loud and clear – Your struggles matter to all Ontarians.

Township cottage owner reports break-in, mailboxes damaged at Pack Way On Tuesday, April 4 the owner of a cottage on Dewar Avenue in McNab/Braeside reported a break-in. The break-in happened sometime in the previous month, and it appeared the cottage had been slept in. Damage was done but nothing appears to have been stolen. Physical evidence was seized, and Const. Mark O’Dacre is investigating. Thefts Dobbie responded to Walmart in Renfrew on Friday, April 7, when store security reported a theft. Police responded and arrested a female suspect outside the store and recovered a cart with stolen merchandise. A 28 year-old female of Petawawa was charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. She was released on an appearance notice for court in Renfrew on May 31. OPP officers investigated thefts of fuel, items from locked vehicles, and a computer. The investigations are continuing. Motorists are reminded to remove valuables and lock your vehicle to prevent thefts. Each year in the spring and summer police respond to increased calls for thefts from unlocked vehicles.

Remove your valuables so thieves will not target you. Lock your vehicle anytime it is not in use. Remember - Lock it or Lose it. Mischief Police investigated several reported mischiefs this past week including two mailboxes removed from private residences and abandoned a short distance away (Halliday Creek Road in Greater Madawaska and Fraser Road in Horton), a group of mailboxes damaged at Pack Way Road in McNab/Braeside, and a car damaged unknown where. Fraud The OPP have been notified of a Scratch and

Win scam currently ongoing in Arnprior. Residents are reporting receiving scratch and win cards in the mail. All cards are winners and you are then instructed to call a 1-800 number. Callers then receive an aggressive sales pitch for water filtration systems and are told the town’s water supply is not safe. For more information on this particular scam contact the Town of Arnprior. For information on various types of frauds and scams contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca or call them at 1-888-495-8501. Crime Stoppers

Stay clear and stay safe this Easter weekend Warm weather means thin ice and fast moving water near generating stations With winter behind us, many people will be heading outdoors to celebrate the arrival of spring this Easter weekend. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding people to continue to exercise caution when around Ontario’s waterways. “Please keep your family safe by paying attention to the warning signs, fences and booms around all hydroelectric stations,” says Mike Martelli, president, renewable generation and power marketing. “Start the spring off with a safety focus and learn more about OPG’s water safety program at opg.com/watersafety.” While the water and the land around hydroelectric generating stations and dams may be tempting, OPG is warning people that the flows are fast even when they appear calm, and areas still covered in ice will become thin as temperatures rise. OPG property and facilities are clearly marked with warning signs and barriers are in place to prevent access and are there for your safety. OPG generates safe, clean, reliable, low-cost power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions. OPG’s power is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps moderate customer bills.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Lest we forget Vimy Ridge As Canada marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge this week, it’s a good time to reflect on the connections we still have today to the men who gave their lives in Europe so long ago. Despite the passing of time, there are Canadians with us today who remember the real people who survived Vimy. Long lost family members. But even when our living connections to 1917 are gone, we should remember all of them and why they served. Canada – and so many Canadians – felt compelled to stand up to aggression. While the best policy is clearly to make every effort to avoid war, humans have yet to perfect that policy. Aggression, especially when the weak are attacked, makes our blood boil. Even when evil acts occur half a world away, Canadians have been willing to put their lives on the line, both on battlefields such as Vimy, and in peacekeeping operations.

We should be proud to be the product of a society that uses force as a last resort. We should be proud that we have no imperial ambitions. We don’t try to force anyone to act like us or be like us, Canada simply sets an example and hopes others will follow. This principle has cost the lives of many Canadians. Yet still the world sees inhumanity. It’s ironic – and despicable – that as we mark the anniversary of First World War battles, where poison gas was not uncommon, we see the same weapon of mass destruction used on the Syrian people. In honour of those who have died in all wars, Canada can continue to set the best example – the one set back in April 1917. Help those who need help. Use force only in defence of them, and the defence of ourselves. Just as the Canadians at Vimy hoped to do. Come November, poppies will feel a little more personal this year.

Pesticides the main culprit in bee crisis To the editor:

This letter refers to the March 30 Karen Runtz contribution ‘A window into the private lives of our native bees.’ Karen states “...mites decimating honeybee colonies.” Take away the word “mites” and replace it with insecticides. Mites arrived in this area approximately 20 years ago and with proper management of bees mites are a “manageable “ challenge with colony losses of 15 per cent per year. With the ramped use of insecticides, particularly neonicotinoids (neonics) in roughly the last 10 years the term “decimating honeybees” is more appropriate when referring to neonics. In fact colony losses due to neonics in Ontario have increased two and three times the losses of 20 years ago. Imagine running a business of 900 hives and starting in 2007 you had losses of 30 per cent (270), five years later

losses of 66 per cent (600 hives). This is an Ontario beekeeper David Schuit who lost 600 hives (tested by Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada - PMRA). PMRA found 70 to 80 per cent die off due to neonics. These losses are compounded by loss of bee hive equipment due to the residual effects of the pesticide. The Canadian honey industry has lost a major player as Schuit has moved his business to New Zealand. Neonics are systemic with a small amount of insecticide is drawn into the plant and any insect that eats the plant, nector or pollen will be poisoned. Neonics do not only kill targeted «pests.” To quote the Wilderness Committee «over the last decade losses of honeybee hives have been far above average, hitting an astonishing 58 per cent in Ontario in the winter of 2014. These declines are primarily due to pesticides. But it is a deadly class of pesticides called neonicoti-

noids which have been increasingly implicated in mass bee poisonings, pollinator declines and even the loss of insect eating songbirds.» Clearly to suggest «mites are decimating honeybee colonies « is not accurate and downplays or ignores the main culprit pesticides. This does not suggest mites are not a problem, however, above average honey production is possible with mites present, well managed. As a beekeeper for over 40 years mites are a «minor» problem, compared to toxic insecticides and diminishing bio-diversity. Beekeepers are in a very good position to witness the decline of not just their honeybees, but the vast array of wild bees , butterflies, all pollinators, insects that eat bees and sadly insect eating birds.

Potholes got you down? Cracks in the road got you bothered? It’s no surprise that Canadian winters are hard on roads. But with spring in sight, those road imperfections can no longer hide under a blanket of snow; that’s what makes it the perfect time of year to kick off Ontario’s Worst Roads Campaign. The CAA Worst Roads campaign is an opportunity for Ontarians to share insights on congestion, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure challenges, signal timing and confusing road signs. (CNW Group/CAA South Central Ontario) Starting April 10 CAA North & East Ontario (CAA NEO) is giving road users the chance to voice their opinion and vote for the roads they feel are most in need of urgent repair. Last year’s campaign received a strong response, garnering nominations for more than 2,500 roads from across the province. Voting is open until May 4 and can be done online by visiting www.CAAWorstRoads.ca.

The early bird gets more than the worm Michael Runtz Nature’s Way

Although spring seems to take one step forward and then two steps back, many of the first birds to return from the south are now here. Eastern phoebes currently greet the dawn with their name-giving songs while killdeer vociferously complain as they fly over fields.

Although it will be weeks until the majority of insecteating birds return to our area, in addition to phoebes, tree swallows and eastern bluebirds are already back. Although those three species forage in different ways and belong to different families (flycatchers, swallows, and thrushes, respectively), they share one feature, one that drives them to return early in spite of the risk of

cold weather and lack of food. All three species place their nests in sites that are relatively scarce. Phoebes construct distinctive moss-covered mud nests on ledges with overhanging roofs. Before humans built bridges with support beams and houses with porches, cliffs provided them with suitable nest sites. But even though cliffs were not particularly rare habitats, the perfect combination of ledge and overhanging rock were hard to find. Thus, phoebes were driven to return early to stake out a claim to a suitable site. First come, first served; those who arrived late might not find a vacant site, and thus might fail to mate and pass on their genes. Tree swallows and eastern bluebirds don’t nest on rock ledges but they do return early from their wintering grounds. Originally, both species nested in tree cavities, which typically would be abandoned woodpecker nests or holes created by rot where a branch broke

off a tree trunk. While one might suspect that there are plenty of such sites in woodlands, both tree swallows and those colourful thrushes forage in open areas, so the cavities they utilized would necessarily be at the edge of a forest, not deep within it. And even if there were a lot of cavities, the demand for them might still exceed the supply, for many other birds including great crested flycatchers, northern saw-whet owls, eastern screech-owls, barred owls, wood ducks and hooded mergansers nest in them. Mammals use cavities too; porcupines, raccoons, and even fishers occupy larger cavities while grey squirrels and both northern and southern flying squirrels inhabit ones with smaller entrances. As if the competition was not already steep enough, two new cavity-using species arrived on the scene in the 1890s. European starlings and house sparrows, European species de-

Renfrew County’s Starter Company Plus program opens

Message from Queen’s Park

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

Monthly Column – April 2017 April 9th, 1917 is without question one of the most important dates in Canadian history. Most Canadians have no trouble remembering that on Easter Monday, April 9th, 1917 Canadian soldiers began their assault on a strategic piece of land in Northern France known as Vimy Ridge. In 1914 Canada—whose external affairs were governed by the United Kingdom—became a participant in the First World War. The war was a result of political tensions and very complex European military alliances at the time. By the spring of 1917, the war had raged on for more than two-and-a-half years and had resulted in what amounted to a virtual stalemate. Previous attempts by the Allies to take Vimy had failed; the ridge was a long, high hill that afforded excellent viewing of the surrounding landscape. Germany had captured it early in the war and had held it during those earlier Allied assaults which had resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. The Canadians had been preparing for this attack since the autumn of 1916 and the battle would be the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one army. Preparation for the attack included extensive mining operations whereby tunnels where dug beneath German lines and stacked with explosives to be set off at the appropriate times. Prior to the attack, the Germans were subjected to a massive artillery barrage which started over a week before the ground assault. During what the Germans would come to call the ‘Week of Suffering’ the Allies would fire over one million shells at German positions. The attack began at approximately 5:30 a.m. Canadian forces made tremendous progress early in the assault, but it would take four long days of heavy fighting to finally take control of the ridge. Many believed that with four separate lines of defence, the Germans had created an impenetrable wall that could not be broken. While there have been many Canadian victories since, the Battle of Vimy Ridge continues to stand as one of our proudest moments as a military force. The taking of Vimy Ridge by Canadian heroes, marked the emergence of the Canada we are so proud to call home a century later. In the words of Brigadier-General Alexander Ross: “It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then, and I think today, that in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.” Canada’s contribution to what was termed The Great War and the War to End All Wars was most significant. With a population of less than eight million people, more than 650,000 would answer the call. At war’s end more than 66,000 had made the ultimate sacrifice and over 170,000 were wounded. We are ever grateful to our heroes of 100 years ago, those who followed them in military service, and all those who serve for us today. Lest We Forget. I would like to take this opportunity—on behalf of Vicky and our family—to wish you and yours a very Happy Easter. As Christians, it is one of our most important feasts when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without His Resurrection, our faith would be without purpose. Please enjoy the celebration with family and friends and reflect on the many blessings we have received. 10 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, April 13, 2017

Not long ago, cancer had the power to alienate its victims. Friends and family members would sometimes back away from someone with cancer, as if trying to not catch it. Even the name would not be mentioned, or only uttered under one’s breath. Whispered, lest cancer should overhear and attack the speaker. That’s not the case these days. Students would email Carter to lift her spirits and see how the process is moving along. Teachers took turns cooking meals for the family every Wednesday, her chemo day. The last thing she wanted to worry about was cooking dinner that night. Not only do teachers work and coach all day, most of them have their own families at home, she said. Yet they still made the time to take care of her and her family.

It allowed Carter to focus on recovering and getting strong. “And to me, this is a large part of what life is about: helping one another out.” She said there is no shame in asking for help, and only great rewards in offering it. “That’s the main message I hope you all hear from my speech today. Regardless of what you may be going through, please don’t feel as though you have to go through this on your own.” She talked about people going through similar troubles. In the case of cancer, Carter lost her mother one month ago. It spread too fast to contain. Many in the gym have felt the same loss. “This is why we choose to have Relay for Life — so that we can come together, support each other and honour the memory of those we love and cherish.”

Cancer has obvious bad parts, but it also reveals strong friendships and families. It offers a challenge to not back away from. It no longer divides people, but instead brings them together, she said. Needless to say, she got a standing ovation. Perhaps the only thing to top it that day were the male teachers having their legs waxed for the campaign. Or when the female teachers gladly dyed their hair in schoolcolour red for the cause. The ADHS Relay For Life takes place June 8.

Seniors at home launches 2017 Yellow Envelope Campaign Liz Wall Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home

May 2017 marks the start of Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH) Fifth Annual ‘Keep the Wheels Turning Yellow Envelope Mail-out Dare to Care Campaign’ in support of your Para Transit Care Coach, the only specialized transportation service for persons of all ages and needs living in Arnprior and the Township of McNab/Braeside. The operation of the Para Transit Care Coach relies totally on local fundraising; your financial support may be one of the main reasons the Para Transit Care Coach will continue to provide for the residents of Arnprior and the Township of McNab/Braeside. Since Feb. 4, 2008, 18,426 trips (which included 12,140 wheelchair, 6,286 ambulatory clients of which 3058 were out of town) have been provided to our citizens, no matter the age, who required ABMSH’s specialized transportation service. Your Care Coach provides a vital service while maintaining independence for those who may not be able to leave their homes in comfort or in a secure manner. Independence is maintained; a human right for all. “We are very pleased and grateful for the very excellent service provided by the Para Transit Care Coach and the dependable and caring attitude of drivers Colin (Borshevsky) and Wayne (Peirard)”, writes Morris Hall and his mother, Dorothy Hall who calls the Arnprior Villa home. “My mother is 99 years old and uses a wheelchair for ease of getting around. The service of the Care Coach allows her to get to medical appointments and be able to join the family for social and family gatherings as she finds it less tiring to be able to stay in her own chair and be transported in and out of the Care Coach,” expressed a thankful

son, Morris Hall. “All staff at ABMSH goes above and beyond to make mother’s trips as pleasant and stress free as possible”. The goal for 2017 is $30,000, which represents the amount only required to cover the driver wages. The total cost to operate our Para Transit Care Coach is as follows: Wages: $30,000; Fuel: $4,300; Insurance: $1,284; Licence: $82; Communications: $1,500; and Maintenance: $3,000. Total: $40,166. Your continued generosity is imperative to make sure this essential service remains active and viable in our community. “As we launch our 2017 Yellow Envelope

mail-out, I would like to thank everyone for the donations received over the past nine years. Your continued generosity is a must to make sure this essential service remains active and viable in our community. Each one of us is only one surgery or one accident away from the possibility of requiring the use of this service,” said Dennis Harrington, executive director, ABMSH. Watch for the ‘Yellow Envelope’ and please consider making a donation by returning the supplied envelope either by mail or drop off at AMBSH’s office; Unit 1, 106 McGonigal St. West, Arnprior, ON K7S 1M4. ABMSH also accepts payment at the of-

fice either by cash, cheque, Debit, Visa, or Master Card. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. More information 613-623-7981. “ABMSH provides a very valuable service to all seniors and folks of all ages with mobility difficulties. Please consider supporting this campaign (Yellow Envelope). You may need it yourself someday,” said Morris Hall and his 99 year old mother, Dorothy Hall.

PAKENHAM SCHOOL SAVED

The Upper Canada District School Board recently decided not to close Pakenham Public School. I applaud all the people who worked so hard to save that priceless community asset. Pakenham was one of 16 schools suggested for closure this June. The potential loss of the school threatened to decimate the community. The school council, chaired by Jennifer Downey, and Diane Smithson, CAO of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, worked hard to prepare a presentation to the school board on why the school should not close. Ms. Smithson and school council member Heather Potts presented a strong business case to the board in November. In the end, their presentation made the difference. Mayor Shaun McLaughlin

Stewart, Antrim Truck Stop among GACC award winners Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com

It was a night that gave Arnprior and area’s best and brightest a chance to shine. The Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce (GACC) hosted the 13th annual Business Achievement Awards and Gala Reception April 6 at the Nick Smith Centre. The chamber partners with the Town of Arnprior and Township of McNab/ Braeside for the awards, which recognize accomplished community volunteers and successful businesses. Renee Stewart was named volunteer of the year. McNab/Braeside award winners included Ballintotas Alpacas (business appreciation), Harold and Joanne MacMillan (agriculture appreciation) and Irene Robillard (mayor’s award). GACC award presentations were made to; Brittany Saylor (young entrepreneur), Kerry Bigelow of Loxx of Style (innovation award), Lumbertown Ale House and Jade and Laney Boutique (new business), Arnprior Floor Covering (skilled trade business award), Anderson Automotive (business of the year award) and Antrim Truck Stop (president’s award). The GACC has long had a powerful voice in the community, said the event’s MC, Jason Marshall. “This area is a real gem,” he said, noting one look at the list of the evening’s win-

ners indicates a strong and thriving community. “We’re heading in the right direction. You know our business community is in good hands now and it’s in good hands for years to come.” Arnprior Deputy Mayor Lynn Grinstead presented Stewart’s award and read from a letter from Mayor David Reid. “I cannot think of anyone more deserving to win the Arnprior volunteer of the year award,” she read. “Arnprior Special Olympics is a very special group of athletes, parents and volunteers and has grown to become one of the finest and most successful Special Olympics organizations in the country.” Special Olympics in Arnprior was founded in 1989 by Vicki Murdoch and Stewart’s involvement began at the inception. “Renee has no children or relatives with special needs, yet this organization has become a passion of hers,” said Grinstead. “Today, Arnprior Special Olympics has over 60 athletes in nine sports and has had many of our athletes representing Arnprior provincially, nationally and internationally.” She currently coaches four sports and has coached at provincial and national levels. She sits on the executive as the registrar, said Grinstead. And although Stewart’s children have grown up, she continues to volunteer with

Antrim Truck Stop would like to thank the Arnprior Chamber of Commerce, and most especially their President Pamela Cox, for the President’s Award we received. It was truly a great honour and a great evening.

Thank you. 18 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, April 13, 2017

Arnprior volunteer of the year recipient Renee Stewart gets a big hug from deputy Mayor Lynn Grinstead at this year’s GACC awards night. It was an emotional moment for Stewart who coaches Special Olympians, hosts a highland dance competition, and camps with girl guides.

Kristin and Craig Anderson took home the business of the year award for their Anderson Automotive. It has been growing since it first opened in 2010.

Renee and her husband Mike tragically lost their daughter Caitlin in a car accident years ago,” said Grinstead, noting the couple’s advocacy in campaigning for the continued four-laning of Highway 17. “I want to thank the town for this award,” said Stewart. “I have a very outstanding family that I really want to thank and I have a fantastic bestie — Vicki Murdoch.” McNab/Braeside McNab/Braeside business appreciation award winners, Ballintotas Alpacas, is unique in that it

falls under the business and agriculture categories, said Mayor Tom Peckett. Owners Chris and Shannon Rouleau opened it in 2003, said Peckett, as an opportunity to educate the couple’s children in the rewards of working with livestock and family. “They expanded the product through local fairs and shows, have been featured on CTV Morning Live, are part of the Rural Ramble and the Arnprior and Beyond Arts show,” said Peckett. The business provides fibre to five provincial mills and three national ones, said Peckett. “The store has many handmade products created by 12 different artisans,” he noted. “You cannot find better clothing material for

warmth and durability. Fifth generation Pine Grove Farms, owned by Harold and Jo-anne MacMillan, is made up of more than 400 acres. “Early on, they raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, hens, ducks, geese and whatever else they could think of,” said Peckett. “In 2005, they switched to cash crops. They’ve been involved in 4-H and junior farmers, minor ball and minor hockey.” Along with raising their family, the couple operates a sign company and works with Renfrew County Housing. Mayor’s award winner Robillard learned at a very early age about giving back to the community. “Her dad served as a councillor for 25 years,”

“Loxx of Style is located at 109 John St. and with the newly revitalized downtown Kerry wants the downtown to look good and feels she contributes to that with her window displays,” said Nibourg. Lumbertown Ale House and Jade and Laney Boutique owners Lisa Hogan and Hugo Lafleche picked up the award for best new business. Launching Jade and Laney two years ago required a big effort, including renovating the historical building, said award presenter Julie Brown. Getting the John Street pub off the ground in 2016 also included an overhaul of the building and Brown noted both businesses are displays of the couple’s flair for design and style. “With the opening of Jade and Laney’s and Lumbertown, not only have Hugo and Lisa improved the downtown core with beautifully restored buildings, but they also employ 20 local residents,” said Brown. Lorincz presented the business of the year award to Anderson Automotive owners Craig and Kristin Anderson. The business opened in 2010 and has been growing every since. “They are very involved in the community and donate to various causes,” she said. “The biggest fundraiser they do is a food bank fundraiser before Christmas every year.” Anderson Automotive is known for quality and honest service, said Lorincz. “It means a lot to get an award like this,” said Craig. “It’s really, really humbling.” Antrim Truck Stop is this year’s president’s award winner. “The proprietors, Gail and Jack Cameron, have grown this business from a small restaurant and truck rePhotos by Derek Dunn/Metroland pair shop, to what it is now — a thrivPam Cox, left, presented the president’s award to Antrim Truck Stop. ing family business,” said chamber Accepting the honour is Gail Cameron, whose family employs more president Pamela Cox, who presented than 100 people. the award.

“Now, Gail and Jack’s daughter Tiffany is the general manager of the day to day operations,” said Cox. “Their son-in-law Clint runs the contracting division and their niece Jade runs the office.” The business has expanded to selling trucks and truck parts, running the 148-seat restaurant, a bakery, convenience store, fuel and rest facility for truckers, gas station and gift shop. “They’ve employed folks from this area, starting from a handful to over 100 today,” said Cox. “The Antrim Truck Stop is a true landmark of the Ottawa Valley.” Gail Cameron, who was raised in the restaurant business and learned the tricks of the trade from her mother, was humble in expressing her appreciation for the award. “I want to congratulate every recipient for every award tonight,” she said. “I want to thank my family. I truly accept this award because of the team of 120 people that we have at the Antrim Truck Stop. Without them we’d be nothing, and we know it. The Arnprior Ministerial would like to invite the community to join them this Good Friday, as they proclaim and celebrate the death of Jesus Christ. Though it may seem odd, the church calls this day ‘Good’, because not only is it followed by the triumphant resurrection of Christ, but through the cross, one’s sins can be forgiven. Through Christ’s loving sacrifice, we can overcome death and discover the life we were created to know. We can have an everlasting relationship with God.

The Battle of the Blades Competition was presented by the Arnprior Figure Skating Club (AFSC) and the Town of Arnprior on Saturday, April 1 in Arnprior at the Nick Smith Centre. A large crowd came out to support local figure skaters who teamed up with hockey players to perform skat-

ing routines. The skaters had about three days to prepare for the show. Glenn Arthur was the master of ceremonies for the evening’s events. Local judges included Rick Gwalchmai, Don Belton and Stephanie Wallace. This was the fourth year that the AFSC and the Town of Arnprior

Liam Hawel off to hockey’s World Juniors DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Maybe being traded to a basement team midway through the season can have an upside. Arnprior’s Liam Hawel, who started out the OHL year with Sault Ste. Marie before moving to a non-playoff contending Guelph Storm, is now in Europe with a Team Canada jersey on. Hockey Canada added Hawel to its pre-tournament roster for the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship in Poprad and Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia, beginning later this month. They played two pre-tournament games: April 9 in Bratislava versus Russia, and April 10 in Piestany versus Switzerland. Canada opens the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship on April 13 against Latvia at 9:30 a.m. It will also play Slovakia (April 15, 1:30 p.m.), Switzerland (April 17,

9:30 a.m.), and Finland (April 18, 9:30 a.m.) in preliminary-round action. TSN is broadcasting 12 games, including all of Team Canada’s matchups at the IIHF U18 World Championship. RDS will broadcast 10 games, including Canada’s four preliminary-round games, two quarter-finals, both semifinals, and the bronze- and gold-medal games. Hawel’s OHL season saw him get much more ice time and points after the trade to Guelph. With many teams still in the playoff hunt, it freed him to join Canada. Canada has won seven medals at the IIHF U18 World Championship, including three gold medals (2003, 2008, 2013).

Our wonderful parents, George Edwin Freeman, and D. June Freeman (nee Maxwell) of Arnprior, Ontario, died within 36 hours of each other after almost 62 years of marriage, on April 2 and April 3 respectively, at ages 95 and 86. George, son of the late E.G.D. and the late Ada (nee Davis) Freeman was born in 1921 in Winnipeg. He was the brother of the late Jean Harvey (late Ian), John Freeman (late Marg and the late Barbara), the late Marjorie Cummings (late Webb), and Lois Wilson (late Roy). As navigator of a B25 Mitchell bomber based in Dunsfold, England, he and his crew carried out 51 missions during World War II. Subsequently, he lived in postwar London and Florence, Italy, with his first wife, Pat Larkin. On returning to Canada, he completed his master’s degree in economics at University of Toronto, and began his 35-year career at the Bank of Canada, where he met and married June. He rose through the ranks at the Bank to serve as chief of the Research Department and later as a deputy governor. He was also a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Prices and Incomes, and a professor emeritus in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 1980, he and June bought a farm near Arnprior, Ontario, and became sheep farmers. June, daughter of the late Wallace A. and the late Dorothy (nee Betts) Maxwell, was born in Ottawa in 1930. She was sister of the late Wallace Jr. ( Brenda) and Penny Schafer (Fred), and sister-in-law of John Dobrowolski (Brenda). One of only five women graduates in the B. Com. program at McGill University in her year, she subsequently joined the Bank of Canada, where she met George. Married in 1955, George and June became parents of Victoria (Mark Fawcett), Martha (died 2002), Kate, and Eric (former partner Lisa Lamoureux), and eventually grandparents of Claire, Ariel, Michael, and Fiona as well as numerous grand-dogs. June was also president of the Natural Childbirth Association of Ottawa and was involved in the King’s Daughters Dinner Wagon, later Meals on Wheels (Ottawa), as well as the University Women’s Club (Arnprior); she served as treasurer for a number of other community organizations. She became an expert midwife, assisting at the births of many lambs at Yellowgrass Farm. We wish to thank the many friends, neighbours, organizations, and businesses that helped make it possible for our parents to continue living in the community of Arnprior as they aged. These included CCAC, in particular Shalan Doxsee, Alida Tourian, and Linda Jamieson; the caring PSWs of St. Elizabeth Health Care, most recently Donna Langford and Anita McNulty; the staff of Island View Suites; and Veterans Affairs Canada. In addition, we thank the fabulous folks at Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, especially Nancy, Colin, Liz, and Lesley; our parents’ long-time family physicians, John Kiskis and Donna Vilis; and the skilled teams at Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital and Hospice Renfrew. A visitation will be held Saturday, April 29 from 1 to 3pm at Island View Suites, 30 Jack Crescent, Arnprior, and our parents’ lives will be honoured and celebrated on their 62nd wedding anniversary, Sunday, April 30, at Kirkman House, 294 John St. N., Arnprior, from 2 to 4pm; all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society, Alzheimer’s Society, Hospice Renfrew, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, or Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. In the care of the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior. Condolences/Donations www.pilonfamily.ca

In Loving Memory of

August 6, 1935 – April 8, 2007 In loving memory of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on the 10th anniversary of the day you went away. God looked around his garden and he found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth, and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough and the hills are hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered “Please be thine” It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day that God called you home. Love Erma, Gary and Carol, Brent and Cindy, Cathy and Dave, Ken and Tammie Grandkids: Joshua, Justin, Cody, Caity, Chloe Great-Grandkids: Felix and Addy

The first year for an Ottawa Valley Pride boys’ basketball team started off a little slow, but by the time playoffs came the 12 and 13 year olds from Renfrew and Arnprior areas were firing on all cylinders. They finished with silver medals at the April 2 championship in Carleton Place. The team is, from back row left, coach Mark Valliquette, Ted Smith, Chris Chirico, Alex Reid, Zac Moore, Noah Leduc, coach Jody Moore; front row, Hudson Valliquette, Sam Dunn, Marcus Legnaro, Cameron Wyatt, and Tyler Lightbody. Missing is John Roach.

Devils spoil Pride’s shot at basketball gold The weekend of April 1-2 saw the bantam boys from the Arnprior Basketball Club — Valley Pride competing in the Eastern Ontario Basketball League championships. With this being the inaugural season playing in the competitive division, the team was slotted into division five at the end of the regular season. Saturday morning saw the Pride come away with a 25-point victory over the Belleville Spirits before falling 64-56 to the Nepean Blue Devils. Sunday started with a thrilling two-point victory in overtime, edging out the Naismith Gaels and setting up an afternoon rematch with the Blue Devils. Unfortunately, after a great first half which saw the Pride leading by seven points, they were unable to sustain the momentum and dropped a 58-44 decision, capturing the silver medal. Well done boys! THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Bearsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, maintain your composure in light of a sticky situation that you are called upon to handle in the next few days. Others will notice your calm demeanor.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 The truth will ultimately set you free, Leo. Seek the truth when handling a difficult problem and this will eventually make the solution easier to find.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a trusted friend is willing to hear your side of the story and offer a new perspective and some advice. You need to win this person’s trust back.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, emotions can be a little distracting this week as sparks fly in a new relationship. Avoid going overboard but enjoy this exciting time in your life.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You might want to hold off on an ambitious project for another month, Virgo. This will give you more time to develop a plan to complete the project.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are content to take it easy and to follow a familiar routine for now rather than branching out into new things. Take a flier on new friendships and you will be glad you did.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you may need assistance, but no one is stepping up as a candidate at this juncture. Wait a bit longer and someone is sure to step up to the challenge.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Your presence is a gift to someone who needs you even if you get tongue-tied and don’t know what to say, Capricorn. Let your company serve as support. Things will fall in place.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Try not to take things too personally when you start receiving feedback, Cancer. Everyone has an opinion, and most people share theirs with good intentions.

Playing cards a staple of Mary’s household Nobody liked a game of cards better than I did. Of course, we young ones were never allowed to play euchre at the Saturday night house parties. That was for adults. But if we could find an extra deck of cards, we could sit on a bed upstairs and play Old Maid, or Snap, two favourite games of mine, while the adults pounded the table down in the kitchen. Although we kids learned euchre at an early age, it was still considered an adult game come Saturday night. The neighbour away on the Barr Line never missed a Saturday night house party. She walked as stiff as a board, and her lips were thin and clamped together so that you could hardly see that she had a mouth. She had a fierce look about her and even at a game of euchre she hardly ever smiled.

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

She always wore black, and on the hottest night of the summer, she had a crocheted shawl draped around her shoulders. Although father would never be rude to her, he had little patience with her constant talk about the sins of the world, and all of us were going straight to hell in a basket. I often wondered where she would end up, but was too frightened to ask. Even though this woman never missed a card game on a Saturday night, she said she wouldn’t touch a deck of cards on a Sunday if her life depended on it. Playing cards on

Sunday was right up there with swearing or stealing chickens. Whatever church she belonged to forbade it. Well, it didn’t matter to us if was Sunday or Monday. If we had a few minutes to spare, or we ran out of things to do after supper, we got out the deck of cards, and sitting around the old pine table we played our favourite card games. I wasn’t too quick on the uptake, and always ended up losing at Snap, until I finally realized my brother Emerson, slapped his hand over the up-card before anyone had a chance to look at it. Mother soon put a

stop to that and moved him away from the table. It was the same thing with Old Maid. I couldn’t figure out how Emerson knew exactly where the Queen of Spades was, until my sister Audrey discovered him sitting on it, ready to play it at just the right time. My brother Earl loved to build card houses when the table was cleared. I was amazed at how high he could build without the whole thing falling in a heap. It wasn’t above Emerson to give the table a shake to bring the card house down either. But the Saturday night house party was when cards seemed to rule the evening, with the neighbour from the Barr Line the first to arrive and the last to leave. Of course, the last card had to be played before the stroke of midnight, or she would quit for the night. My curiosity got the

better of me one Saturday night when the house party was at our farm, and I asked father why the woman from the Barr Line was so against cards on Sunday. He said he wouldn’t doubt it for a minute that, when she was alone on a Sunday,, she wouldn’t reach for a deck of cards to break the monotony of living alone, never letting on to anyone. And he gave a hearty chuckle, and said, “It’s like someone who is death against alcohol, sure that the Devil is behind every drop, but takes a sip now and again just for medicinal purposes,” and he put back his head and roared. Check Local By-laws before Open Air Burning

The McNab/Braeside Fire Department is advising residents to contact them regarding any restrictions governing open air burning, before starting any fires or burning brush. “With spring outdoor cleanup starting, we know some folks choose to burn brush and yard debris on their property,” explained Fire Chief Hartwick. Cleaning up debris and limiting the level of flammable vegetation surrounding your home is a good practice, but make sure the way you do it is safe – for you, your home, your neighbors, and the surrounding area. A permit is required with specific conditions for burning as per open air burning by-law 2015-99. Open air burning can include the use of outdoor fireplaces and cooking fires not involving the use of a barbeque. Some outdoor appliances used are not recommended because there is potential for personal injury, property damage and increased risk of a grass fire. “Whether in the backyard of your home, the cottage or at a campground, make fire safety a priority,” said Fire Chief Hartwick, “Open air burning, especially if left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire”. Always keep fire safety in mind, contact McNab/Braeside Fire Department for more information or any questions you have about our open air burning requirements 613-623-5756 ext. 233.
