Town works to improve water system this summer DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A consultant’s report prompted by last summer’s water advisory has at least one member of Arnprior council hesitant. “I’m real nervous about allowing another house to be built,” Reeve Walter Stack said at the April 10 council meeting. He fears Stantec Consulting’s report suggests the municipality could be held liable should a house fire in certain parts of town be left without working fire hydrants. “Yes, an individual house (being built) will add to the risk,” said Kevin Alemany of Stantec. The report provided a brief history. On Aug. 10 four watermain valves along Daniel Street closed to allow for replacement of one on Havey Street. That’s when town hall received numerous calls of no water in the southwest part of town. It was an unexpected loss of water pressure. The system was flushed and Stantec was hired to provide testing and water model analysis. A test was done Aug. 18 from the water tower across the Madawaska River to the Charlesand-Arthur streets neighbourhood. An older pipe behind Nick Smith Centre showed a “significant” pressure loss in that neighbourhood. However, it was likely caused by a blockage or closed valve along Charles, not corrosion. It corrected itself during a flushing
of the system last fall. (It will be replaced at a $350,000 cost to taxpayers in the coming years.) Stantec determined that problem areas in the system included: pipe conditions near Nick Smith; hydrant conditions at Arthur and Isabella; pipe redundancy at Daniel and Baskin. The upshot is that more redundancy is needed in the system. That means the construction of a loop at Daniel and Baskin this summer will allow pressure to stay strong even if a watermain fails. The work will be paid for by developers in Callaghan Estates and at the new French Catholic elementary school on Baskin Drive. Public works director John Steckly said there is no reason for residents to feel nervous. He agrees that building even one house affects the level of impact to the system; if a watermain breaks the number of properties affected is larger; that doesn’t pose a greater “risk” to individual properties, though. “There’s no reason to be alarmed,” Steckly said after the meeting. “It’s something that needs to be dealt with in a timely manner and in conjunction with normal development.” He is working with developers and expects no disruptions or growth delays as a result. Mayor David Reid said the town will deal with the redundancy issue in a timely manner. “I’m not surprised with the findings,” Reid said, “we just need to get proactive with the findings.”
Sessions offered on fentanyl, overdose Illicit fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, has been confirmed in areas throughout Ontario in a variety of fake prescription pills and other street drugs, such as cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, and marijuana. Illicit fentanyl is known to be deadly in small amounts, making the risk of overdosing extremely high. Ingesting even a small amount can be fatal. Renfrew County and District Health Unit is hosting local community sessions as part of an overdose prevention plan.
The locations and dates for these events include April 26, at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew, 6:30 to 9 p.m. A panel of health professionals and community partners will make presentations, beginning at 7 p.m. For more information, you can also visit www.rcdhu.com or call the Renfrew County and District Health Unit Health info line at 1-800267-1097, ext. 666, to speak with a registered nurse.

Arnprior Arts group wants to stage unparalleled theatre site DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
The absence of a theatre between Kanata and Pembroke with proper seating could be solved in centrally-located Arnprior. All stages across the region, from Constance Bay to Cobden and beyond, have chairs set up on a floor. It is less than ideal for quality productions that expect sloped — called raked — seating. Audiences then enjoy full view of the stage at eye level. Central Ottawa Valley Arts Collective (COVAC) is sifting through the details to take over a location in Arnprior, with a plan to install collapsible raked seating, upgraded lighting and sound, and an air exchanger. The building is known as the Christian Education Centre, already a popular destination among town residents for the performing arts. However, COVAC wants to attract performers and audiences from throughout the region. They hope the renovations — which include moving the stage from one end of the hall to just in front of the kitchen — along with the facility’s built up reputation will create a new hub for the arts. “We are taking a big gamble, but there is an eagerness to do it,” said Elaine Lowe, a COVAC member. “Everyone we’ve talked to so far said it is a fantastic idea.” The building could be obtained for little to no

REBATES INFULL BLOOM UNTIL JUNE21
Theatre building faces a few challenges Continued from page 4
It shoulders the $36,000 annual maintenance costs, but struggles to do so. It has some incentive to unload the burden, but preferably for a good cause, like nonprofit community theatre, she said. Many unanswered questions remain, starting with how many tickets must be sold over the course of the year to make it viable. Currently, a number of groups use the John Street North facility. None will lose their access, but others will need to jump on board. Good feedback has come from Two Rivers theatre, Prior Players, Arnprior School of Dance, Main Street School of Music, and others. But, feedback and putting money down are two different things. Another issue is the long-term commitment to the building. It is in decent shape, but the Town of Arnprior is considering a restaurant and theatre down by the marina in the next decade or so. COVAC wouldn’t be opposed to moving their equipment, but are unsure how to ask for fundraising dollars to buy the equipment if government
and a private owner eventually benefit. Then there is parking. Bringing audiences from across the region is not an unreasonable goal, but the Christian Education Centre is notorious for limited parking as it is. Many walk now for the dozen or so events per month. Parking along busy John Street North for maybe twice as many events could raise the ire of nearby residents and town officials. COVAC got some feedback from Mayor David Reid, who said changing ownership could prove problematic. “He was quite excited, but said zoning it from church to residence would be something,” Lowe said. She remains optimistic that the demand exists. Everyone from service clubs to church members would benefit. “Everyone wants to see their little darling perform,” Lowe said. “I think we can find a way to make it work.” COVAC is hosting an open house to share their ideas and gain more feedback. Various groups will also stage mini performances throughout the time frame. The open house is on Saturday, April 29 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

MacKay, Runtz to speak at April 28 Field Naturalists’ meeting Go back generations in your own Ottawa Valley backyard with two great storytellers KAREN RUNTZ
Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club ads luring us to discover our ancestry are “the thing” these days. The usual payoff — one-dimensional printouts without any real sense of life and place. How much more satisfying to go back generations in your own Ottawa Valley backyard with two great storytellers — Rory MacKay and Michael Runtz — connecting the dots to the land and the wildlife there now. You’ll have that opportunity April 28 at Arnprior’s St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall when the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club (MFNC) hosts Axes to Ashes, Singing Saws to Howling Wolves: How Lumbering Changed the Nature of the Ottawa Valley. Rory MacKay, author and longtime “student” of logging history, will transport us back 200 years to the rich forests of historic logging days, while Carleton University teacher and naturalist Michael Runtz will interpret how the events and practices of those years brought about today’s array of plants and animals. Both speakers are known for their wicked senses of humour. Combined, the duo make for a dynamic and informative evening on the human and natural history of our area. The presentations, which begin at 7 p.m., will raise funds to extend Arnprior’s Macnamara Nature Trail, an interpretive trail operated by the MFNC. Doors open at 6 p.m. so come early to check out the displays from local organizations. Tickets are $15 advance, $10 for ages 18 and under, and $20 at the door. They are available locally at the Arnprior Library, Gillagallou Birds (Almonte and Ottawa) and online at mfnc.ca. What about the deer? First, let’s situate ourselves with an overview. MacKay notes: “The logging industry in the Ottawa Valley began in 1806. Over the next century, white pine and red pine were cut and squared in the forest, then driven down the Ottawa River to Quebec City, there to be loaded into ships destined for Britain. By the 1860s smaller pine began to be cut into logs and driven by river to be sawn into lumber at sawmills at Arnprior and Ottawa. “Lumbering techniques changed over time. Lumberman J. R. Booth built railways to make it possible to keep logs moving to his mills and

On April 28, 2017, the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club (MFNC) hosts Axes to Ashes, Singing Saws to Howling Wolves: How Lumbering Changed the Nature of the Ottawa Valley. Together axes and ashes brought change to the Ottawa Valley. So: When the chips were down, did the deer rise? Did the forest change (via the wood chips and fires/ashes from logging) cause a local rise in deer?

Find out at the event. And yes, that play on words is a Michael Runtz original! “Over the past 200 years, there have been dramatic changes in the animal life of the Ottawa Valley,” notes Runtz. “Beavers, once so rare they were seldom seen, are now common. The type of wolves found around here changed not once, but thrice. Moose were replaced by white-tailed deer, and bald eagles, which became endan-
gered, are now common sights.” Fittingly, this fundraiser to extend the Macnamara Nature Trail is one of the Arnprior 150 events marking Canada’s 150th. Bring your passport to get it stamped.

Fishing sale set for marina on April 23 DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
The second annual fishing equipment sale will take place at the Arnprior Marina, but with more to see and do. Organizer Bill Craig, owner of Mr. Muskie Charters, is planning for almost twice as many displays, along with seminars, question-and-answer periods, and on-site catering. “It’s a good chance to come out and see what guys have for sale and to maybe learn a thing or two before the season begins,” Craig said. “And it’s a great way to meet a bunch of other guys who are into fishing too.” Anyone can set up a table, Craig said, but he would prefer a phone call first (613-622-0673) so he can manage things. Anyone with old equipment lying around the garage, or those who make their own flies or lures, all are more than welcome. Among those participating are Jim Murphy of Murph’s Bucktales, Richard Dunlop of Sea Four Lures, Bill Fuller of Huskie Muskie Leaders, Anthony Sapiano of Sappetizer Baits, and many more. At least 14 vendors will be on site, up from the inaugural’s eight. Seminars will take place in late

Among them is walleye expert James Mathias, who will also take questions. Even Craig himself will offer up some advice, though don’t bother to ask the location of his favourite fishing hole.
“There’s fish everywhere out there,” he said with a laugh. The sale takes place at the marina on Saturday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rain date is April 23. It is free to attend.

Sens fever has struck
Spring has sprung, at last, and with it comes spring fever, the Ottawa Senators version – you know, the fever that turns you red, raises your voice and otherwise turns you into a rabid fan. Sens flags start appearing everywhere. The Red Mile along Elgin Street comes to life as those afflicted with “the fever” flock there not in search of any cure but in search of the camaraderie and contact with others that this fever craves. And the fever seems to loosen tongues so you hear everyone – around the water cooler, at the bar, around the kitchen table – talking Sens hockey. Erik Karlsson is the best defenceman in the National Hockey League, some say. No, Erik is the best player in the whole world, others counter. And that Clarke MacArthur – boy, what a story it will be when he sparks the team to the Stanley Cup. And what about that Derick Brassard. He has flourished in the Stanley Cup playoffs before and that is why the Sens got him in the first place. Sens goalies Craig Anderson and Mike Condon are great stories – Craig supporting his wife Nicholle in her battle with cancer and Mike showing he is one solid goalie when other teams gave him a pass. There’s just so much to talk about these Sens of ours. But then, that’s the fever, isn’t it! Even the smallest of things can affect the fever and make it go viral. Case in point – Marc Methot’s finger. Imagine that, a little pinky playing a role in a Stanley Cup playoff series. Who would have guessed? But this is what “the fever” can and does do. And, you know what – in a world that at times seems so dangerous and unpredictable with terrorists, chemical warfare, famine and eccentric leaders, it is refreshing and relaxing in a way to be affected with Sens fever. You can be passionate and cheer heartily and, at the end of the day, you get to enjoy the victories and lament the losses and know that, Stanley Cup or not, there will be only good times all along the way. There is, thankfully, no vaccine or antidote for Sens fever. We should be so glad of that. Hopefully this year it’s going to be a long, long fever season, lasting for weeks and weeks. Go, Sens, go!
Sincere thanks to Arnprior Fire Department To the editor:
On Sunday, April 16, I arrived home in Manitouwadge, Ont. after a visit with my elderly mother in Arnprior. There was a message for me on my answering machine from Cory Nicholas of the Arnprior Fire Department. He relayed to me an incident that took place around 8 a.m. that morning in the apartment building my mother resides in. It is as follows: The Arnprior Fire Department received a phone call from someone (thank you to them for their concern) in the same apartment building as my mother and relayed they could hear an alarm coming from somewhere. The fire department responded immediately to the apartment building and, sure enough, there was an alarm. They were able to track it to my mother’s unit. Being early in the morning, my mother was still sleeping and their
door knocks went unanswered. Eventually, they gained access and tracked the alarm to the hot water tank in the laundry room. They rectified the problem in short order then proceeded to check on my mother. She was still sound asleep. She did not hear the alarm. The firemen (women) entered her bedroom and awakened her. It took her a few moments to “come around” out of her sleep. She told me her first thought after waking to strangers in her bedroom was: “What are these martians doing in my bedroom?!” She was soon fully awake and Cory explained what the situation was and what they had done to rectify it. My mother wanted me to send you this story and pass along a huge “thank you” to

Cory and the rest of the crew that responded with such professional finesse. She is so very thankful that such services are always at the ready with great professionalism, kindness, grace and compassion. They instantly made her feel at ease and calm. I spoke with Cory myself later today. He said that he would take some time soon to call her again and return to her apartment. His plan is to install another alarm in her bedroom so that she would hear it should there be another incident of any kind. Thank you so very much, all of you at the Arnprior Fire Department. I am a very grateful daughter.

Along the trail with Macnamara A century ago there lived a man in Arnprior whose name should be, but sadly isn’t, a household name in Canada. Charles Macnamara was the secretary-treasurer for the McLachlin Bros. Lumber Company and his fame should have arisen not only from his 46-year tenure with that company but also from what he accomplished outside of it. Macnamara was a pioneer of photography and natural history studies. His black and white photographs beautifully documented the early lumber industry. Men risking their lives to untangle logjams, horses hauling giant timbers through wintry landscapes – many of the finest records of that important part of early Canadian history are his. Charles Macnamara also turned his discerning eye and camera toward nature. Every Sunday, his one day off work, Macnamara would walk from his Daniel Street home in Arnprior to his log cabin in Marshall
Bay. His weekly from Braesojourns were reside to White corded in diaries Lake. The four-kilometre trail, which passes through forests, fords streams, and visits a marsh (courtesy of the current landowner, Nylene Canada Inc.), was built and is maintained by the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club, of which I am president. Excitingly, a trail extension to allow users to explore the marsh close-up is in the works. To raise funds for this extension, the club is hosting an event April 28 at the St. John Chrysostom Hall in Arnprior. My good friend and noted historian, Rory MacKay, will speak about the early lumber industry in the Ottawa Valley, and I will talk about the changes it brought to local flora and fauna. Annual VHR Round-Up Dance set for April 30 at the Armouries VALLEY HERITAGE RADIO
For 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Valley Heritage Radio is on the air. For seven of those days – beginning April 23 – there is more than great music flowing across the airwaves of the community-owned, not-for-profit station. There is also a clear message for members of the community that their help is needed and appreciated. “Community memberships and annual donations are crucial to keep Valley Heritage Radio on the air,” said station manager Jason Marshall. The fundraising membership drive begins Sunday, April 23 and continues for a week. Volunteers and on-air personalities will be in communities across the Valley all week, as part of the annual “Out & About” visits. They’ll be bringing with them local musicians, to make it more of a party atmosphere. The Out & Abouts this year will include Almonte, Pembroke, Cobden, Eganville, Arnprior, Braeside, and Shawville. DJs will be announcing exact locations and times leading up to the event. “We love getting out to all areas in the Valley, and we know some people want to support Valley Heritage Radio, but can’t physically make it out to the station,” said Marshall. “So we’re delighted to come to them.”

Al Andrews from Douglas, and Kirk Warren from White Lake, lend their musical talents to the Valley Heritage Radio annual fundraising Radiothon during a stop at the Antrim Truck Stop. Also during Radiothon Week, there will be three nights of live music on the Thomas Cavanagh Stage at the Station (3009 Burnstown Rd.). April 24 will be an Old-Time Rock ‘n’ Roll Night featuring the Fabulous Heartbeats, along with Rockin’ Johnny and other special guests. April 26 will be a Fiddle and Step Dance Night hosted by Kyle Felhaver. And you don’t want to miss Friday, April 28 as it is Country Night at the station, with some of the area’s top county music artists taking to the stage. All live shows run from 7 to 9 p.m.
10 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, April 20, 2017
“The live shows at the station are free and we encourage everyone to come out and catch the fever of the Radiothon live and in person,” said Marshall. Also a highlight of the week is when ‘Mr. Fundraiser’ Art Jamieson takes to the airwaves on Friday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marshall says it’s never dull when Art is around, and you never know what is going to happen. The fundraising drive wraps up Sunday, April 30 with the annual Valley Round-Up Dance at the Renfrew
Armouries. There will be five hours of live music guaranteed to keep everyone’s toes tapping, and a light lunch so you can keep up your energy for the dance floor. Featured talent includes the Countrymen along with special guests Tony True, Gord Barnes, Judi Moffatt, and Johnny Spinks. Also during the Round-Up Dance, Valley Heritage Radio volunteer DJ Roy Berger will attempt to set a new Guinness Record for most knuckle push-ups in a minute. He currently holds two world records for push-ups.
“It’s a perfect way to wrap up an intense week of fundraising,” said Marshall. “What better way to enjoy a spring Sunday afternoon than with great friends and great music. And seeing one of our own set a new world record.” Marshall encourages people to get their tickets early. The station’s last dance in January brought a full house, and for the first time, people were turned away at the door. Woven into the week of great music is a pledge drive where members of the community are encouraged to purchase or renew memberships to the station, or make donations, said Marshall. “We are a non-profit station with more than 100 volunteers and a handful of paid staff who work tirelessly to keep the station running day in and day out,” said Marshall. “Our community membership sits at more than 1,800 members and without those supporters and their generosity, we wouldn’t be able to stay on the air.” Each day throughout the Radiothon, listeners will hear the usual blend of music and the regular shows, but there will be daily messages encouraging the listeners to support the station in any way they can, said Marshall. For more about the Radiothon, contact the station at 613-432-9873 or 888-532-9870.

Beware scratch card scam: town TOWN OF ARNPRIOR
Recently the Town of Arnprior has received a number of reports that an aggressive water filtration sales company is delivering misleading scratch-and-win lottery tickets to residents through the mail. The tickets always win an undisclosed prize and instruct the winner to call a phone number to claim the prize. When the resident calls, they are actually reaching a salesperson from a water filtration system sales company. The salesperson, who claims to be an expert, then tells the resident that a certain substance is present at a high level in their drinking water and that it is not fit to drink. Certain residents have been told that either iron or chlorine was at unsafe levels in their water. The salesperson then reportedly informs the caller that they need a special filtration system which costs $3,500. Some residents have stated that the salespeople have set up appointments to come to their homes to collect tap water samples. The town is urging residents to be very cautious when responding to companies that distribute unsolicited mail, especially those that

claim that you have won a prize. Be cautious when allowing anyone into your home, and ensure you are properly informed and confident with your decision before signing any agreements. Please note that the town does occasionally ask for volunteers to allow Town of Arnprior staff to test tap water in homes and businesses in order to ensure that the water provided in our distribution system is safe. However testing will only be initiated at your request and staff will always provide photo identification before entering your home. You can always contact the town offices at 613-623-4231 when in doubt. Residents are reminded that no one has the right to enter your home unless you have invited them in. No one has the right to stay in your home once you have asked them to leave. Past door-to-door campaigns have targeted residents using the claim of unsafe drinking water. Residents are reminded the town’s drinking water supply is subject to extensive testing and regular monitoring. Copies of the town’s annual report can be found in at www.arnprior.ca or by calling 613-623-4231 ext. 1818.

CBC Radio podcast reaches 20 million downloads CBC Radio’s true-crime podcast Someone Knows Something reached a major milestone this week, scoring a total of 20 million downloads in Canada and the U.S. over its two seasons. Hosted by award-winning filmmaker and writer David Ridgen, Someone Knows Something examines unsolved cases of missing or murdered individuals. The series focuses on a single Canadian cold case each season in hopes of uncovering new information, while also exploring how the cases have affected the families and communities involved. Listeners are brought deep into the mystery, hearing new evidence and first-hand accounts from those closest to the investigation. Season one explored the disappearance of five-year-old Adrien McNaughton, who vanished on a fishing trip with his family in 1972. Season two examined the disappearance of Sheryl Sheppard, a 29-year-old Hamilton woman who went missing in January 1998.

Arnprior, Renfrew weightlifting club wins on national stage DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
It’s a gym that lifts well above its weight class. Ultimate Fitness — with facilities in both Arnprior and Renfrew — has sent many participants to national weightlifting competitions in recent years. And they have come back to Ottawa Valley communities with plenty of hardware. “I’d say we are one of the best powerlifting gyms in Canada,” said co-

The results are: • Judy Gravel women’s Master 3 72 kg (didn’t place); • Shelley Colter women’s M2 84+ kg 4th place; • Wendy Norton women’s M2 84+ kg 3rd place (bronze medal); • Paula Norton women’s Jr 84 kg 2nd place (silver); • Leslie Sullivan women’s Master 1 72 kg 2nd place (silver) also had a national record squat of 322 lb; • Sarah Leighton women’s open 72 kg 2nd place (silver); • Jim Norton men’s M2 105 kg 3rd place (bronze); • Mike Forster men’s M2 120 kg 2nd place (silver). It was a fine showing for the crew, but in past years Ultimate Fitness has sent as many as 14 members. At least one member says it is thanks to the instructors. “It’s all because of the amazing coaching of Paul Vaillancourt and

And in the front row are: Paula Norton, Paul Vaillancourt (coach) and Shelley Colter. Karl Hjelot,” said Leslie (Stavenow) Sullivan of White Lake. “Ultimate Fitness and powerlifting have changed my life. I have goals that I never dreamed of because of UF and every training session I get stronger. I have a network of friends all over the world now and am part of something that is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports out there.” The secret to their success is two-
fold, Vaillancourt said. They focus on using high-quality techniques. The process of lifting the weight is more important than the outcome. “No one cares how much you can lift wrong,” he said. “Form and technique are what matters. It’s about attention to detail.” The other factor has to do with environment. The rural work ethic is there, he said. And small towns in the
dead of winter have fewer activities to offer. Weightlifting is a fun sport when little else is going on. He said many older people are getting into it. They have both the time and money to dedicate. Weightlifting is a highly competitive sport within a strong sense of community, he added. They help one another out, share tips, but love to push themselves to the limit.

The 2016-2017 Arnprior Oldtimers Hockey League champions are Legion. After a hard fought three-game playoff weekend in early April, the men in black hoisted the coveted cup, much to the dismay of Lou’s Leafs, Danata, and Lorne’s Electric who at least beat them to the golf course. Natural talent and commitment to the team system paid off for, back row from left, Steve Hudson, Cliff Judd, Darrin Wilby, Adam Brown, Rob Potter, Steve Dennee, Tristan Sherman, John Dyer and Frank Pecora; front row Lincoln Jeffries, Captain Dave Flaherty, Steve Mosley, goalie Fred Martin, Larry Dennee and Will Wagner.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies beneath our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. Always in our hearts and thoughts, Love Bonnie, Shannon (Mike), Ryan (Heather), Matthew, Sierra and Aiden

Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was so kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return, When we are all together, But with the love in our hearts, You walk with us forever.

November 14, 1953 – March 21, 2017 Forever in our hearts, Jennifer passed away peacefully on March 21 surrounded by the love and devotion of her family and girlfriends that she so deserved in her final moments. Jennifer was predeceased by her beloved Jeff (Steele) of Renfrew. Beloved daughter of James Hodges and the late Monica Martha (nee Monette). Dearest sister of Cynthia, Susan and Tim. Fond sister-in-law to Bryant, Kate and Michael. Kind and quirky aunt to Timothy. Loved by her cousins Amanda, Cathy and Louise. Great friend to her mother-inlaw Betty Steele. Jenny loved - and was so loved by - her best friends Bev, Debbie, Evelyn, Linda and Theresa. She spent many years working and enjoying times together with her loyal friends. Jennifer’s passion was with the hospitality business and she enjoyed her summers with the Polar Continental Shelf Program culinary team. She had loads of energy and a very strong work ethic. She was happiest running errands for everyone she knew, skiing at Calabogie Peaks, had a gift for finding hats and other treasures at local vintage shops, and baking and cooking for friends and family. Oh, the sweetest desserts ever and the creamiest scalloped potatoes are legendary! Jenny certainly inherited her maternal grandmother’s Irish temperament: a mix of stubborness, personal charm and warmth, and a wit that shone through adversity. She had a vivacious spirit and a strong independent streak. Jennifer showed incredible strength throughout her two year journey with ovarian cancer, remarked on by all who knew her or who were members of her medical team. She was a fighter and always held out hope that she would win her battle. An Old Irish Blessing is so fitting in this tribute to Jennifer: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Silent Tears The quiet darkness of the night Brings out my greatest fears… Did you know how much you meant to me; Then I cry my silent tears, As I watched you in that little room, And I looked into your face I saw that one I knew before; In another time and place What I wouldn’t give to go back in time, For just a little while, So I could hear you laugh again. So I could see you smile Now the memories are all that’s left, Such a permanent good bye, And it seems as though they’ll never stop, These silent tears I cry.

OBST, Wanda - In memory of a dear, fun and loving sister and aunt, who was taken tragically in a car accident, April 23, 2003. Time passes… our grief remains… You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what she’d want; Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Forever in our hearts… Deb, Doug and Erin

Seniors’ Games sign up due by April 26 The Renfrew County 55+ Seniors’ Games (RC55+SG) committee is again preparing for the 2017 Summer Games season. A District of the Ontario 55+ Seniors Games Association, RC55+SG will follow the same format as in the past couple of years, and hold the events in venues throughout the county during the month of May. This arrangement has worked well in the past and relieves a single town of having to plan and prepare for these month-long activities. Called games, these events are not all physical. While there are swimming, walking and pickle ball games among other sports, many people enjoy playing in various types of euchre and bridge tournaments. To participate, competitors must register by April 26. Registration forms and schedules of events for the games can be found at recreation centres and seniors centres in all the towns, or you can call 613-628-1272 for more information. Online, RC55+SG can be accessed at http://www.osga55plus.ca/. Once there, find District 5, Renfrew County, and at the bottom of that page click on Registration and Waiver Form. Some of the games taking part in Renfrew are: pickleball on May 6 at 9 a.m.; bowling on May 8 at 9 a.m. and on May 16 at 9:30 a.m. is euchre. Games taking place in Arnprior include: swimming on May 15 (call Arnprior Recreation Department any day for an appointment; and on May 17 at 8:30 a.m. is carpet bowling. The summer games are a welcome activity, coming each year in May after a long Canadian winter. Be sure you don’t miss out on the fun and please join us this year.
Mary was very careful about what went on her plate The spring melt had caused the Bonnechere to overflow its banks and even the little creek that ran below the west hill was flooding its shores. My three brothers checked the water levels every day, pitch forks at the ready. The first sign of a mud pout, swimming close to the surface, meant our suppers would soon include the ugly fish, which would just about turn my stomach when I looked at them, either alive or on a platter in the middle of the table. I always said a silent prayer of thanks when either mud pout or blood pudding was on the supper table. Thanks to that Mother, knowing how much I hated both, let me have either dinner leftovers, or a couple hard-boiled eggs and toast. And if my stomach was particularly squeamish, as it was prone to be, I was allowed to have my supper at the bake table, away from where my brother Emerson could contribute to my misery by smacking his lips with every bite, and putting his face as close to mine as he could without a reprimand from Mother. Of course, I learned at a very early age that

Links of homemade sausages, smoked slabs of bacon, and head cheese (which became another one of my most hated foods after I saw how it was made), and the little barrel of pickled herring in the summer kitchen, always assured us of a hearty meal. There were more sealers of jams, jellies, apple sauce and preserves, pickles, relishes, and vegetables on the shelf in the cellar than we would ever eat before Mother was ready to put down more batches when the next fall rolled around again. At least twice a week Mother baked bread, and with our own homemade butter, we never had a meal without a plate of both sitting on the table. Although Mother’s protests did little good, Father never ended a meal without taking a piece of well-buttered bread and wiping his plate clean. We children were never allowed such behaviour, of course. We would be well into summer before the sauerkraut barrel showed signs of being empty,

the secret to avoiding anything I didn’t like at a meal was to simply not put it on my plate in the first place. Because the rule was hard and fast: anything you took on your plate had to be eaten! So I made awfully sure everything I took, I was prepared to eat. I also learned that there was no chance we would ever go hungry on the farm. We may have been as poor as church mice, but every meal was more than ample. There was always racks of meat hanging in the smoke house, with more canned in jars in the cellar. And of course, every Sunday we had roast chicken, goose, or duck.

and we never seemed to run out of potatoes, or vegetables buried in sand in the cellar. Of course, there were things Mother couldn’t get away without buying. Sugar, flour, little cans of spices from the Rawleigh man, or lemons and raisins when she could spare a few pennies out of her “egg money.” We all had hearty appetites, especially Father and my three brothers. Mother said they ate like it was their last meal on earth. But I was very careful what I piled on my plate because I was always conscious of Mother’s rule, “Eat everything you take, because if you don’t, you are taking it right out of the mouth of a starving Armenian.” I had no idea who these starving Armenians were, but I was pretty sure they lived in Arnprior.
