Award-winning artist returns home to Arnprior DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

At the centre of an important 1980s avant-garde art movement is an artist who recently returned home to the Arnprior area. Thirty years ago New York City’s art scene involved pop icon Andy Warhol hosting parties at The Factory with drag queens and Bohemian hobos. Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat were making waves and other members of the SoHo crowd, like James Rosenquist and performance artist Laurie Anderson, were shaking up the art world. Victoria Alexander, having moved to New York City six years after graduating from Arnprior District High School, would “see them around” but was also busy generating a name for herself in the city’s East Village. It is difficult to see how sleepy Arnprior, then a stint at the Ontario College of Art and more schooling in Guelph, could prepare her for one of contemporary

art’s most exhilarating and turbulent periods. But it did, and then the town managed to lure her back many years later. Not too far from the SoHo establishment was where the Rivington School, named after an abandoned public school, served as home to some of the city’s most cutting edge artists, Alexander included. The group was largely interested in welding and forging large format sculptures, performance and street art. They would meet up across the street at a club called No Se No for performances and collaborative metal installations. One in particular was known as the “massive junk sculpture” and was housed in the Rivington School Sculpture Garden. City crews would regularly knock it down, but the garden would mysteriously flourish again. (The workers played a crucial role in the performance.) The Rivington School now enjoys something of a second life. The art world and some pop culture circles are re-

Weather damages infrastructure DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

It was a punishing winter and dangerous spring for communities along the Ottawa River. Snow and fluctuating temperatures damaged several tombstones in Arnprior cemeteries. Heavy rain, coupled with swollen rivers, carried off private property and possibly harmed municipal infrastructure. Many have said this is the worst year in at least two decades when it comes to spring runoff. The worst of it was far down the Ottawa, near Montreal, where a state of emergency was declared in Rigaud, Que. Septic tanks flooded and residents were warned not to drink well water unless boiled. There were no reports of similar situations up river in the Township of McNab/Braeside. Residents did post video to social media of rising water levels in the Sandy Hook area. Both the township and Town of Arnprior made sand and bags available, at the public works building and McLean Park respectively, for anyone fearing for their homes. Spring runoff is expected to subside during the last week of April. Arnprior recreation director Glenn Arthur anticipates sand replacement at Robert Simpson Park beach. The marina will likely be late opening this year, too, because the docks cannot yet fasten to their head blocks. Mayor David Reid said few town residents

are in danger of flooding. One person called the municipality with concerns for his property. However, the provincial ministry of natural resources takes the lead on natural occurrences. It holds conference calls with affected municipalities. More disconcerting for many is the revelation at Albert Street and Malloch Road cemeteries. Several tombstones, both old and newer, have sustained significant damage. Large branches lie next to many. The likely culprits are wet snow snapping branches and thawing that pushed up earth. Folks are wondering when public work crews will do clean up. Public works director John Steckly is aware of the situation. “We had a lot of snow and melting earlier. It was an extremely bad winter for damage to trees,” Steckly said. “We’ve had significant damage.” The crew of eight are busy with other priorities, he said, and the cemetery budget is not enough to hire outside workers for the clean up. The ground is also saturated with water, he added, making it to risky to enter the cemeteries with large equipment. When the ground dries, the work will get done. “Until then, you can do more damage than good.” He wasn’t sure if damage is worse this year compared to past years, and the town doesn’t measure spending to the point of spring clean up costs.

Safety n Your S zzle Few things can match the fun and enjoyment of a barbecue with family and friends. Practice sensible, safe barbecuing and your spring/summer get-togethers will be a sizzling success. Season Opener At the start of the BBQ season, do this three-step safety check of your BBQ: 1. Clean: Use a pipe cleaner or wire to ensure burner ports are free of rust, dirt, spider webs or other debris. 2. C eck: Examine the hose leading from the tank to the burners. Replace if cracked or damaged. 3. Test: Find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to propane cylinder connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and/or replace the damaged parts and retest. Light It Right Take these steps in the right order when igniting a BBQ: 1. Open the hood. 2. Turn gas release valve on tank. 3. Turn on grill controls or heat settings. 4. Take a step back. 5. Push the igniter button. If there is no igniter button, insert a long match or BBQ lighter through the side burner hole first, then turn on the heat control knob. If the burner does not ignite right away, turn the gas off and wait five minutes, keeping the hood open, before repeating the procedure. Keep It Safe Barbecues are approved for outdoor use only. They emit carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can lead to unconsciousness and even death, which means never barbecue in a garage, tent or other enclosed space. Propane cylinders must not be used or stored inside any structure. Do’s and Don’ts for Handling a BBQ DO... • Keep loose clothing away from a hot barbecue. • Keep children and pets at a safe distance. • Turn gas valve off first when finished, then turn off the burner controls, so no gas is left in the connecting hose. • Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover. DO NOT... • Don’t leave the BBQ unattended when in use. • Don’t allow grease to build up on the burners or at the base of the barbecue, as this could cause a grease fire • Don’t throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame. • Don’t position your barbecue too close to wooden fences or walls. Make sure the area behind your BBQ is free of combustible material, since this is where hot gases escape.

Arnprior to don own kilt colours DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior and McNab/Braeside could have its very own Scottish colours. The tartan pattern, presented to Arnprior council at the April 24 meeting by Friends of the Arnprior & District Museum, would be unique and recognized by the official registry in Scotland. It could be incorporated into kilts, scarfs, ball caps, coffee mugs and more. The Friends see it as a possible money-maker for the museum, but also as a way to celebrate the area’s Scottish origins. “It will add to and enrich our identity,” said Friends mem-

The proposed Arnprior tartan would be dominated by blue, representing the two rivers, along with green for Gillies grove, and gold and red for the coat of arms.

ber Jan Lucas. She added that all provinces, at least three Ontario counties, and the Town of Petawawa have their own distinctive tartans. The proposed Arnprior tartan would be dominated by blue, representing the two rivers, along with green for Gillies Grove and the logging history, and gold and red for the coat of arms. The Friends consulted past tartans in the area for inspiration, including Buchanan, MacNab, and McLachlin. An official unveiling will take place at the museum on Canada Day. Council agreed to lend its support to the idea. “Anytime you have the chance to celebrate your heritage, It’s a great thing,” said Mayor David Reid, who keeps a photo of Arnprior, Scotland on his cellphone.

Arnprior family shares experience at Hospice Renfrew SUNSHYNE, ALLYSON AND ETHAN MASON

“As long as the sun shines down on me there is hope.” March 29, 2015, was the day my husband Jim was diagnosed with a brain tumour. As we sat on the bed in our room, our son, Jim and myself trying to absorb what was happening, these were the words he spoke to us. They became our motto throughout the journey of cancer. After he was diagnosed things moved very quickly, meeting with oncologists, surgeons, nurses and so on. There wasn’t much time to sit and think … really think … what a stage four tumour meant. The word terminal was never once spoken to us and so on we went. Jim Mason was and continues to be the strongest human being I have ever known. He never once gave up hope through a 10-hour surgery, weeks of chemo and radiation, and never spoke the words “I’m tired.” He never wanted to worry the kids or me, but the unspoken was very clear in front of us. He was slowly losing the battle.

With the help of Community Care Access Center, home-care, family and friends, we were able to keep Jim at home and comfortable where he wanted to be for around eight months, until one day when I came home from work for lunch he was unconscious on the floor. This was the last day he was home with us. The nurses at the Arnprior Hospital gave him excellent care, but just as he was at home his condition was deteriorating. After a meeting with our doctor, I knew I would not be able to care for him any longer. As wonderful as the care was at the hospital, it was very hard on Jim with all the sounds and distractions. He needed a quiet, peaceful place. This is where Hospice Renfrew came into our lives. To have a room to himself with a beautiful view of the outside gardens and trees instantly brought calm. He loved the outside world. He spent most of his life camping, hiking, anything and everything to be outside. He marvelled at nature and how beautiful the world was, teaching our children about the beauty around them. See HOSPICE, page 6

toilet seats, one bathroom fan, and one register cover were stolen. Prior to the exit, one of the females distracted the clerk while the other one made the exit. Both were seen entering a dark coloured newer SUV leaving the location. The women are described as females approximately 30 years of age, Asian, 160 cm (5’ 2”) in height. They

OPINION

Connected to your community

Hats off to volunteers Travel anywhere in the Ottawa Valley and you are sure to be touched by a volunteer. National Volunteer Week runs from April 23 to 29 and it is a chance to thank and recognize Canada’s 12.7 million volunteers for the difference they make in their communities. Arnprior’s volunteer of the year Renee Stewart was recently honoured for her hard work and dedication over the years. She has volunteered with numerous organizations such as Special Olympics, Girl Guides and the annual Caitlin Stewart Memorial dance competition. At Hospice Renfrew, which serves the entire Renfrew County, volunteers contributed more than 7,000 hours back into the vital institution last year. An organization like this could not run without the support of volunteers. Volunteers are the silent majority behind any successful event. Without their hard work, many necessary programs in the community would cease

to exist. It can be hard to give of oneself and the greatest gift these individuals give is time. These vital community members continuously put the community first. As Hospice Renfrew volunteer Mike Noon says “One needs to volunteer...to make our community a better place.” He challenges people to volunteer as we “have a debt to society to pay back...and it makes you feel good.” As some sports/Cubs/Guides season come to an end and others get going, it is important to recognize the impact these volunteers have on the lives of our youth. They are instilling values that will last a lifetime. Volunteers do not do what they do to be recognized, they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Yes, fancy awards and galas are always nice. But really, in the end, what makes a huge difference in the lives of a volunteer are two simple words: Thank you.

Support for Seniors at Home To the editor:

Recently there was an article reviewing the Arnprior Braeside Seniors At Home (ABMSH) breakfast fundraiser. It was mentioned that at least 29 clients could not be serviced due to the shortage of drivers. It got me thinking most will glaze over this article and not do anything because they do not know any of these clients ... Well guess what, I am one of these 29! So to put a face on a client, I disc jokeyed for 35 years. I preformed weddings, school dances, fund raisers and met thousands of people over the years. In recent years until I became too ill, I was a Renfrew County Public School, trustee, president of the Civitan Club, and I was on the executive of the Arnprior Legion.

I spent the last two years in Renfrew in a self imposed exile going back and forth to the Ottawa General, going through tests for a liver transplant; but I have moved back and my first issue was I still have to use Renfrew for my hospital visits. I do have other medical issues such as severe arthritis in both legs and lower back, diabetes and a few other minor problems, which prevent me from driving. So here is client 29 who still wants to support his hometown. I am asking for those still healthy and maybe even bored, to contact ABMSH and become a driver. I volunteered all my life to this community, I need more healthy people to commit and support your community too. Thank you. Glenn Miller

Redmen name sign of respect and honour To the editor:

Last month, I was driving my granddaughter to Arnprior District High School. On the way, she was telling me that the school board is intent on erasing the name Redmen from all teams at the school. I don’t know how you feel but I was very upset to hear that. There was a very beautiful mural on the far wall, done by a very talented student some years ago that stretched almost the whole length of the gym. It must have taken him many countless hours of dedication to complete. That, unfortunately, has already been obliterated. I am positive that anyone I know with any native blood would have been extremely proud of the representation. My family lived for a time in Pointe au Baril, north of Parry Sound on the highway towards Sudbury. We actually had Indian bands living on either side of our business, Wing’s Shell Station, that we ran with another couple - Shawnaga to the south and Magnetawan to the north. As a matter of fact our first glimpse of local colour was almost an exact replica of the mural of an Indian warrior in full regalia on horseback (referred to above) decorating the side panels of his vehicle. Ron Noganosh is a very gifted artist belonging to the Magnetawan tribe and they Sales Manager: Leslie Osborne leslie.osborne@metroland.com 613-432-3655 DISPLAY ADVERTISING: Christine Jarrett - Arnprior/WC- 613-432-3655 christine.jarrett@metroland.com Stephanie Jamieson - Renfrew - 613-432-3655 stephanie.jamieson@metroland.com Alicia Whyte – Renfrew 613-432-3655 awhyte@metroland.com CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING SALES: Adrienne Barr - 613-432-3655 | 1-800-884-9195 adrienne.barr@metroland.com THE DEADLINE FOR CLASSIFIED IS FRIDAY 4PM AND DISPLAY ADVERTISING IS MONDAY 9:30AM

have a trading post on the highway towards Sudbury that offers many treasures in many different mediums. Growing up in Braeside in the 50s, the Gillies Lumber Mill was the main employer. Over the tracks and half way up the hill the Gillies office quarters was a main gathering point, especially in the evenings, as it also housed the local post office at that time. Further up the hill, known locally as the Inn hill, there was also a boarding house that took in migrant workers who were only around in various locations all along the river to fell and trim the trees which would then be sent downriver to be graded and cut to different lengths, widths and thicknesses. Some workers came from as far away as Sweden (Con), Norway (Trulz) and Carl was the first black person of my acquaintance and I am happy to report that I don’t recall any negatives regarding his presence in our village. I don’t know why I feel so strongly about this issue but I do. I don’t think the term Redmen would in any way, shape, or form be misconstrued as an insult to anyone with native blood. On the contrary, I believe instead that it would be regarded as a sign of respect and honour.

Patient, Resident and Client Safety

Across Arnprior Regional Health, patient/resident/client and staff safety is top of mind. It is important to keep those in our care safe. We continuously look at ways of improving our programs. Below we have highlighted a few ways we keep safety at the forefront.

Discharge Planning

Reducing the Fall Risk

Preventing Infections

Discharge planning is the process used to decide what a patient needs for a smooth move from one level of care to another or simply the return home from hospital.

Each year, millions of adults over the age of 65 have a fall. Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries and can increase the risk of early death. Having a fall or even just the fear of falling may cause some to limit their activities, leading to reduced mobility and a loss of physical fitness, which actually ends up increasing the fall risk. To promote patient and resident safety we have identified those at risk of falling. At the hospital, patients wear a purple bracelet so they can be easily identified to staff.

The Infection Prevention and Control nurse is the primary resource at ARH to review practices to prevent infection with staff and patients. Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are the most frequent adverse event in healthcare delivery worldwide. Each year, about 8,000 Canadians die from hospital-acquired infections; 220,000 others are infected.

RN Ralph Mawdsley on one of the many post discharge phone calls.

At ARH, Laurie Hebert leads the team through the discharge planning process where the patient and their family member is directly involved.

The discussions include the physical condition of the patient both before and after hospitalization; the type of care that will be needed; and, where the patient is going next. It also includes information on whether the patient’s condition is likely to improve; what activities he or she might need help with; what extra equipment might be needed, such as a wheelchair, commode, or oxygen; who will handle meal preparation, transportation; and possibly referral to home care services and community resources. In addition to the process of discharge planning, all patients receive a post discharge phone call 24-48 hours after leaving hospital. ARH wants to make sure they transitioned home ok. We ask them about taking their medications, and having a follow up visit with their doctor, we do this knowing it will reduce the likelihood of their having to be readmitted to the hospital and reduces anxiety of returning home.

At the Grove, the Recreation Department runs a Too Fit to Fall Residents and clients at the Grove enjoy the Too Fit to Fall Program. program. Exercise is very important, especially as you age. The recreation staff, a physiotherapist, and the nursing staff work together to customize exercise programs for each resident and client based on their abilities. The key message of ‘Too Fit to Fall’ is to design an exercise routine that includes strength training, posture, balance training and weight bearing aerobic physical activity. These different forms of exercises are needed to maintain muscle strength, improve balance, improve posture and maintain strong bones. Research indicates that performing challenging balance exercises can reduce falls, especially if performed most days of the week.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and Clostridium difficile are three bacteria commonly found in Canadian hospitals. They can cause symptoms ranging from asymptomatic colonization to septic shock and death. To prevent HAIs at ARH, all staff, follow the procedures set up by IPAC. All staff before (and after) patient care or contact, wash their hands. The housekeeping department cleans and decontaminates the environment and any equipment. We implement contact precautions for any patient infected or colonized with a superbug, and we screen new patients. The IPAC nurse also reports infection rates across the corporation and to the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care. RN Teri Wellon with the

IPAC education cart. Members of the community are invited to check out our website where we post patient safety data under the public reporting tab.

SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION TODAY AND LEARN ABOUT THE GROVE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT The webpage and online petition www.helpthegrovegrow.ca was recently launched. Signing the online petition shows your support for the need for 36 additional long-term care bed licenses here in Arnprior. The Grove redevelopment is a multi-phase project, which includes the new and expanded build of the nursing home and the opportunity to repurpose the existing building for seniors housing and community services. The goal is to provide a continuum of care for seniors in the greater Arnprior region allowing them to remain in their homes as long as possible, to provide for different levels of accommodation (e.g. independent living, assisted living, more LTC beds), offer affordable housing and maintain healthy lifestyles. We need to continue to hear our community voice and show government representatives that our community is committed to ensuring that we have equitable access to long-term care and that seniors can age well in the greater Arnprior Region. Visit www.helpthegrovegrow.ca and sign up today. Support our community as a place where seniors can age well. 10 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, April 27, 2017

Take time for trees: MFNC KAREN RUNTZ

Some events in nature - the live streaming of April the giraffe giving birth or cameras recording birds at feeders and nests - attract thousands, even millions of eyeballs. But who watches or listens to trees? After all, trees are just there. Local tree ecologist and educator Owen Clarkin , the speaker for the Macnamara Field Naturalists Club May 2 meeting, would tell you otherwise. Clarkin, who has been studying the trees of Eastern Ontario since the age of four, has an active following on a Tree Ottawa Facebook group where he is the resident expert. In mid-April a member posted: Can someone tell me what

kind of tree this is? The cones are making ticking sounds on this warm day. Sounds like birds cracking seeds in their beaks but that’s not it. We’ve got several of these trees and they’re all... ticking away. It’s fascinating. “It looks to be Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris),” answered Clarkin. “The cones are opening in synchrony. Sometimes they do this en masse, with impressive accompanying sounds over a day or so.” Trees have their own sounds says biologist David George Haskell, who recently wrote The Songs of Trees: Stories from Nature’s Great Connectors about his findings. Peter Wohlleben’s best-seller The Hidden Life of Trees suggests that trees have social networks, share resources and nur-

ture their young. More familiar to us are the ties trees have to the broader network of nature - how wildlife use trees for food, shelter, nesting and mating - and the impact that changes to trees have to this network. A clear correlation for area birders is Ron Pittaway’s annual Winter Finch Forecast of the movements of winter finches in the upcoming winter—a forecast based on the cone, berry and seed production of trees. That network includes humans, of course. The very air we breathe is improved by the presence of trees. Among many other benefits, trees provide clean water, temperature and flood control. is sufficiently warm and before tree leaves open overhead. As all gardeners know, there are risks in blooming in early spring. Late frosts are possible and even snowfalls are not out of the question. Even if the delicate floral parts escape damage from those conditions, there is a good chance their insect pollinators will not be active, and without these “surrogate lovers,” fertilization will not take place and no seeds will be produced. There is risk in blooming early so many of the spring ephemeral (the term applied to the early bloomers) have taken out an insurance policy for seed production. Underground, protected from the environment, violets, hepatica, and other spring ephem-

These contain all of the sexual parts and they self-pollinate, guaranteeing seed production even when the above-ground, showy blooms fail to be pollinated! Spring wildflowers are much more than a bunch of pretty faces. But you’d better look for them soon, for it won’t be long until they’re gone for another year! A reminder that this Friday is a double-bill gala in Arnprior: noted historian Rory MacKay talks about the fascinating logging history of the Ottawa Valley and I give a presentation on the changes it brought to our flora and fauna. THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU COURTESY OF THESE COMMUNITY MINDED BUSINESSES

One Bad Son plays the John St. Pub this Friday, April 28. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. From left are Shane Volk, Adam Hicks, Kurt Dahl and Adam Grant.

One Bad Son returns to Arnprior SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

“You won’t be disappointed.” One Bad Son (OBS) lead vocalist Shane Volk says the band is excited to make its return to The John St. Pub in Arnprior on April 28. “An OBS show is a special experience,” he said. “We have such hard core fans, the live show is our favourite part. We’ve always strived to put on the best live show we can.” And there’s plenty to celebrate. The band’s latest single, Raging Bull, just reached number two on the Canadian charts. OBS has played the John St. Pub twice now and they’re looking forward to coming back.

“It’s a really good venue,” said Volk. “The crowds both times were great.” Raging Bull offers a taste of what fans will hear on the to-be-released album. “We’ve got four songs finished and we’ll be in Toronto in June to finish recording it,” said Volk. “We’ve definitely modernized our sound a bit. Raging Bull, in particular, is more modern sounding.” Formed in Saskatoon in 2004, One Bad Son consists of Volk, Adam Hicks (guitar), Adam Grant (bass guitar) and Kurt Dahl (drums). OBS will headline the Mountain Man Music Festival in June at Calabogie Peaks. Say Yes and special guests Crossing Jane and Eagleson open the show Friday in Arnprior. Doors open at 8:30 and showtime is 9:30 p.m.

New York had lasting influence on artist Continued from page 1

“I learned that the real basis of the making of art has more to do with a state of mind and the acceptance of others’ creative process than any kind of elitist ideal.” That area of New York was in flux, she explained. AIDS was snatching victims at almost every turn. Artists were scampering for affordable space ahead of gentrification. American punk and rap was pissed off, neo-cons were bent on defunding psychiatric institutions, and The Bonfire of the Vanities was more than apt: the meek were being shredded. Good thing the resourceful and discerning valley girl found a few friends. “Life in the city during those times wasn’t all that easy, it was big and tough. It would have been very easy

to disappear down the rabbit hole, as many did,” she wrote. “With the support of other artists and mentors who had taken me under their collective wings I was able to focus on my development both as my own person and as an artist.” She became a member of the Rivington School. Over the course of 13 years in the city - seven squatting in abandoned buildings - she saw guts spilled out in work, all emotional upheavals flowing in wondrous ways. She confesses to not know what others saw in her. She floundered in her creative vision, had yet to hit her stride (and wouldn’t for some time), and admittedly didn’t have much to offer. “But the acceptance and support that group of people showed me was just what I needed.” The kindness had lasting effects.

Today, from her home overlooking the Ottawa River just west of Braeside, Alexander waxes nostalgic about those times. She recently returned to New York to receive a coveted Acker Award for achievement in the avant garde art community in New York. She is recognized for helping develop artists in the city and throughout the world. “I was really surprised. I don’t even know who nominated me,” said the self-described introvert. “I do have artist friends all over the world, and I like to pass on what I know, and promote people wherever I can.” She has never stopped showing and learning. At the University of Portsmouth in England last year Alexander received her Masters in Fine Art and then went on to exhibit in several shows in London.

She regularly shows her work in various New York galleries. She works in several mediums, including traditional paint on canvas. But she is also very interested in installation. She is currently working on the phenomena of “action ritualization.” It is her contention that certain mental distresses are relieved by the practice of handwork, such as needlepoint or knitting. “The comforting aspect of it can be linked with mental well-being. With automation we, as a species, have lost touch with these crafts that not only provide comfort but allow us to construct our own safe spaces.” Her installations explore the tensions that arise between ancient habits and pervasive technological advancements. One work has dozens of quasi-knitting needles tapping on metal. The dissonant rhythm comes in and out of pattern, which is strangely comforting. “It’s kinda nice, people seem to like it,” she smiles, showing a video of her

machine on a cellphone. The easygoing artist doesn’t appear to have suffered an existential crisis as a youth, or had any other obvious reason that jettisoned her from smalltown Ontario. She showed promise in art at a very young age. Her parents didn’t resist. She was fairly indifferent to the opinions of her peers. “Everybody follows their own path, right.” This path has led her home again, with short excursions to art capitals of the world. She is currently working at the Arnprior and District Museum. And, of course, toiling away in her studio. “Isn’t that an amazing view?” she said from the studio window. “I love being home.” Editor’s note: To see a series of photos on Alexander’s work, including the needlework installation, see our website at insideottawavalley.com and enter the headline ‘Award-winning artist returns home to Arnprior.’

Three local high school hockey players drafted into CCHL2 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The smiles on the faces of three aspiring hockey stars say it all. After much hard work and determination, the local players have achieved the next step to further their dreams. Braeside’s Nolan McGregor, Arnprior’s Cohen Dunn and Douglas’ Brayden Dellaire were all drafted at the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey league bantam draft on April 10. The three were also in the fifth season of the Hockey Canada Skills Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew. Stacey McGregor, who coached the trio on the varsity hockey team and the hockey academy, is very happy with them. “I think, overall, we are proud of any student when they achieve success,” said Stacey. “They have put in so much hard work and it is nice to see it pay off.” The hockey academy gives them the opportunity to set goals on what they want to improve on. “The program is curtailed to the students, it is really tailored to the needs of the students each year.” McGregor The Carleton Place Canadians drafted Nolan McGregor, Stacey’s son, who played last season with the Ottawa Valley Titans Major Bantam team, in the fifth round, 42nd overall. “It’s an honour. They are a good organization and known to be a very

Stacey too speaks highly of the leftwinger. “He has a very high hockey IQ and sees the ice very well. He handles the puck confidently and is able to score big goals,” said Stacey. With the Titans, in 30 games he scored seven goals and had 18 assists. Going into the draft he was confidant about his future. “I figured I would get drafted, I just didn’t know when and what team,” said Nolan. “I was excited to go to Carleton Place.” He has already had one practice with the other draftees and a team

meeting. He was at the draft and found the moment he was drafted indescribable. “It’s so hard to describe. It’s a good feeling that someone wants you,” said Nolan, who has been playing hockey since he was five and knows what he has to do to make the team. “A good off-season and I need to train hard and get stronger.” Nolan will follow an off ice-conditioning plan from the Titans training staff. As to the hockey academy. “I loved it, I liked it all.” Dunn The Kanata Blazers drafted Dunn

in the sixth round, 58th overall. “I am very happy that Kanata drafted me and I am very excited to try out for them.” Last season, with the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces Major Bantam team, the left-winger was the top pointgetter with 25 points, after 26 games, including 11 goals and 14 assists. He knows Kanata has a great organization. Their head coach was just named the coach of the year. “They were able to develop (Cobden’s) Jack Quinn, who was just drafted to the (Ontario Hockey League),” said Dunn. “I’ve heard great things about the organization and the

coach.” Dunn started playing later than the others in second year novice. The coach praises Dunn’s on-ice presence. “He’s a power-forward with a great work ethic,” said Stacey. “He is strong on the puck and is determined to improve his skill.” As to what he needs to do to earn a spot on the Blazers lineup: “I’m going to have to show them what I excel at, work hard and show them what I did at the evaluation camps,” said Dunn. Although he did not attend the draft, it was a pretty special moment when he received the phone call informing him was drafted. “I was pretty excited,” said Dunn. “I feel like I worked very hard for a number of years and to finally get that call, it was very exciting.” Dunn says the hockey academy helped him develop his skills tremendously, especially stick handing and skating. “We worked on stickhandling every single day, so that helped. And quick feet/edge work (skating).” All three students drafted are registered for the St. Joseph’s hockey academy for next year and registration is still open. The hockey academy is entering its sixth season this fall and anyone entering Grade 9 or 10 at St. Joseph’s High School interested in the program should contact Jeff Halk: jaghockeyhcsa@gmail.com.

George, son of the late E.G.D. and the late Ada (nee Davis) Freeman was born in 1921 in Winnipeg. He was the brother of the late Jean Harvey (late Ian), John Freeman (late Marg and the late Barbara), the late Marjorie Cummings (late Webb), and Lois Wilson (late Roy). As navigator of a B25 Mitchell bomber based in Dunsfold, England, he and his crew carried out 51 missions during World War II. Subsequently, he lived in postwar London and Florence, Italy, with his first wife, Pat Larkin. On returning to Canada, he completed his master’s degree in economics at University of Toronto, and began his 35-year career at the Bank of Canada, where he met and married June. He rose through the ranks at the Bank to serve as chief of the Research Department and later as a deputy governor. He was also a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Prices and Incomes, and a professor emeritus in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 1980, he and June bought a farm near Arnprior, Ontario, and became sheep farmers. June, daughter of the late Wallace A. and the late Dorothy (nee Betts) Maxwell, was born in Ottawa in 1930. She was sister of the late Wallace Jr. ( Brenda) and Penny Schafer (Fred), and sister-in-law of John Dobrowolski (Brenda). One of only five women graduates in the B. Com. program at McGill University in her year, she subsequently joined the Bank of Canada, where she met George. Married in 1955, George and June became parents of Victoria (Mark Fawcett), Martha (died 2002), Kate, and Eric (former partner Lisa Lamoureux), and eventually grandparents of Claire, Ariel, Michael, and Fiona as well as numerous grand-dogs. June was also president of the Natural Childbirth Association of Ottawa and was involved in the King’s Daughters Dinner Wagon, later Meals on Wheels (Ottawa), as well as the University Women’s Club (Arnprior); she served as treasurer for a number of other community organizations. She became an expert midwife, assisting at the births of many lambs at Yellowgrass Farm. We wish to thank the many friends, neighbours, organizations, and businesses that helped make it possible for our parents to continue living in the community of Arnprior as they aged. These included CCAC, in particular Shalan Doxsee, Alida Tourian, and Linda Jamieson; the caring PSWs of St. Elizabeth Health Care, most recently Donna Langford and Anita McNulty; the staff of Island View Suites; and Veterans Affairs Canada. In addition, we thank the fabulous folks at Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, especially Nancy, Colin, Liz, and Lesley; our parents’ long-time family physicians, John Kiskis and Donna Vilis; and the skilled teams at Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital and Hospice Renfrew. A visitation will be held Saturday, April 29 from 1 to 3pm at Island View Suites, 30 Jack Crescent, Arnprior, and our parents’ lives will be honoured and celebrated on their 62nd wedding anniversary, Sunday, April 30, at Kirkman House, 294 John St. N., Arnprior, from 2 to 4pm; all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society, Alzheimer’s Society, Hospice Renfrew, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, or Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. In the care of the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior. Condolences/Donations www.pilonfamily.ca

The moment that you died, Our hearts split in two, The one side filled with memories, The other died with you. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, We do it everyday, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you tightly within our hearts, and there you will remain, Life has gone on without you, But it never will be the same.

ROUTES AVAILABLE!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Give careful consideration to any advice you receive. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, your imagination is running wild and this could lead you on an unexpected adventure. Take a level-headed friend along for the ride.

This was an after-supper chore, and it only happened once a year. This was not a time to sit idly in the rocking chair and light his pipe, as he liked to do after his evening meal. No, every spare minute he had, he would sit on the low stool and with a couple of empty pails beside him begin the ritual that would make sure we had enough potatoes to last us through the next winter. With the longer evenings v of upon us, there was THIS WEEK’S FEATURE THIS WEEK’S FEATURE THIS WEEK’S FEATURE no spring need to light the lantern for the job at hand. Jack & Faith’s With the summer-kitchen door wide open, he would reach down and grab one potato at a time, and turn it over in his hand, examining it closely. And then, with the paring knife he had sharpened on the whit stone before, he would quarter the potatoes just so. They had to be done in a certain way, which meant the job was too important to hand it off to one of us, for which we five children were eternally grateful. ther why this was so important, he said it was the only way you could be sure the potato would root when it was put in the ground. And so, Father would turn the potato in his hand, examine it, and cut it into proper pieces that would be sure to MARY COOK grow when planted. And again he would tell me how the eye would sprout in the ground, and from that beginning, a potato would grow. And soon the planting would begin. But before, Father would have spent many backbreaking hours on the long stretch of land that ran beside our vegetable garden. The reasoning behind planting potatoes outside the vegetable garden escaped me, but my sister Audrey said it was because they would take up the whole garden. And so, long before Father started cutting them into pieces, he would have plowed that part of the field, and then with a shovel he would work each row until it was full of separate holes, just deep enough to plant. I thought the planting was as much of a chore as getting the ground ready. Father would take the filled pails from the summer-kitchen, carrying two at a time, and I would sense the pain I thought he must feel from the load, and he would place the pails at intervals along the rows. Then, stooping over, he would take out a few pieces of the cut potatoes and drop them into the holes. But the chore didn’t end there. Dippers of water from yet another pail were poured on top of the potatoes and then the hole covered with the earth beside it. Father could only do a couple rows at a time; such was the chore of planting potatoes. It would take many hours to finish the job, and then the long wait began, hoping that one day a sprout would appear to show that his hard work had paid off. And when row after row of potatoes filled that part of the field, I would marvel at the miracle of it all. I knew it would take a long time before we would see the blossoms on the plants, and I would both rejoice and be filled with dread. Because sometimes, when the sun beat down on our backs like an open fire, we would go up and down those same rows with little honey pails of coal oil and pick off the potato bugs which, if left alone, would rub out all Father’s long hours of labour. And I felt a certain comfort and reSAVE 40% lief as the plants grew and flourished, and I would have a deep sense of All Purpose gratitude knowing as long as we had Industrial Broom those bags of potatoes in the cellar, Heavy duty, angled head, we wouldn’t starve to death when winfibers withstand harsh ter closed around us and something chemicals. called the Depression showed no sign 4515-540 of easing off.
