On land or with paddles in their hands, the Prior Chest Nuts (PCN) know how to have a good time. The PCN hosted their Fifth Annual Spring Tea fundraiser on April 22 at St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall with more than 200 people enjoying an afternoon of tea, treats and a fun fashion show organized by Lana Chenier of The Artful Gallery. This is the fifth year for the tea and it has sold out every year. “It’s wonderful how the community supports us. Thank you!,” said Susan Reynolds, of the fundraising committee. Master of ceremony Tracy Reid welcomed and thanked guests for coming. “This is the fifth year so it looks like a tradition has been born,” said Reid. “The arrival of spring each year always brings us a sense of renewed hope, a brighter outlook, and fresh ideas, so it is very appropriate that the Tiffany Lepack/Metroland Chest Nuts Tea and fundraiser comes Susan Mills and Susan Reynolds of the Prior Chest Nuts welcome guests to their annual Spring Tea and at this time.” Fashion Show on April 22 at the Parish Hall in Arnprior. Reid also informed the crowd of their next huge adventure. “The Chest Nuts need to continually keep fundraising each year in order to keep their boat afloat and pay for the upkeep, insurance, as well as entrance fees to the various festivals and competitions they attend each season,” said Reid “In fact, they are extremely excited to be entered into an international festival in July 2018 in Florence, Italy. This is a very big deal, so needless to say, fundraising has shifted into high gear.” Reynolds says the team, made up of 22 people in their dragon boat called ‘Kahlua’ with 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steer person, is very excited about its upcoming trip. In 2014, the PCN were at the International dragon boat festival in Sarasota, Florida with 3,000 other breast cancer survivors from around the world. It was there they announced the next international event would take place in Florence, Italy in July 2018. “We all said whoa! We are going!” said Reynolds. “We are really looking forward to going to represent Arnprior on the world stage and to have fun!” The festivals are quite an experience as they get to interact with breast cancer survivors from across the world. Some of the team names are the best part: Missabittatitty, Bustin Out, A Breast in A Boat and Chemo-Savy.“It’s related to breast cancer but in a fun way,” said Reynolds. The PCN came together for the first time in 2010, after a cancer support group in Arnprior. In 1996 a Canadian doctor from Vancouver, Dr. Don McKenzie started a dragon boat team for

women with the belief that this activity would benefit breast cancer survivors as it provided strenuous upper body activity in a socially supportive environment. The local team is comprised of women from: Arnprior Renfrew, Kanata, Stittsville, Almonte, Constance Bay and White Lake with the common thread of all being breast cancer survivors. Reynolds is a breast cancer survivor herself since 1999 and says the group is very supportive. “We are representing people with breast cancer and showing them that there is life after cancer,” said Reynolds. The team is made up of women in a wide age range from 30 to 80 years old. “It inspires me, cancer is not a death sentence. I am inspired by everyone’s story,” said Reynolds. She has however lost two family members to breast cancer and when they participate in the flower ceremony at the start of festivals, she always thinks of them. In fact, since the PCN started five of its paddlers have died. “We have a plaque with their names on it, on our boat, that plaque really inspires us and we are doing it for all of them, they are still with us.” Their fundraising goal is $33,000 and the tea on Saturday was one of their big events with next fundraiser being their annual Plant/Garage sale set for May 27 in the parking lot of PJ’s Restaurant, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. More fundraisers are in the works to help the team get overseas. Anyone who would like to support the team with a donation or as a corporate partner (the group is now a registered charity) can contact Reynolds via email susanreynolds930@icloud. com.

Grove wins award for iPod project The Grove Nursing Home has won AdvantAge Ontario’s Community Connections Award for bringing together the Arnprior community to provide music to residents with dementia. For its winning entry — the “Personalized iPod Project” — The Grove partnered with Arnprior Public Library to raise $4,100 in order to provide each of The Grove’s residents with an iPod and a personalized playlist. Residents use their personalized iPod to listen to their favourite music, which helps improve their behaviours and, ultimately, their care. The Grove initially surveyed each resident to discover their music preferences. Then, the home turned its attention to promoting the fundraising campaign to the community. The Grove held a green-screen photo shoot with residents at the library to help with marketing. Once the campaign went public, the Arnprior community jumped on board. People began dropping off used iPods to the library. The Arnprior Rotarians donated $500. In addition, musician Craig Cardiff held a concert with half of the proceeds going to The Grove. By October 2016 — only six months after the idea was born — the fundraising goal was met, and each of The Grove’s 61 residents had a personalized iPod and playlist. Under the program, the library

ods that continue to meet the musical tastes of the residents are simply renewed. Providing each resident with a personalized iPod has enhanced the resident experience and has raised awareness about the power of music in senior care. The program has now expanded to the community after library patrons began asking to borrow devices for family members with dementia living at home, in seniors’ residences, and other longterm care homes. “Through its Personalized iPod Project, The Grove has shown the ArnArnprior Public Library chief librarian Karen prior community how it is DeLuca and Tracey McCormick, manager of improving resident wellrecreation and the adult day program at the being and is advancing seGrove Nursing Home, show off the AdvantAge nior care,” says Catharine Gapp, AdvantAge OntarOntario’s Community Connections Award. io CEO. “We are proud to repurposed donated iPods from the recognize The Grove with community. Antiques business wins three-year zoning extension DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Antiques, Treasures & Treats won a three-year reprieve from town hall, and could see their difficulties disappear entirely by the end of this year. The home-based retail business broke municipal bylaws when it started selling items from a shed several years ago. Owners Judy and Mike Wilson obtained a building permit for the shed, and paid appropriate commercial taxes ever since, but the proper people at town hall were unaware the shed was being used as anything but storage. When a single complainant brought

that to the town’s attention, an investigation concluded with three options: change zoning laws to permit the use; refuse and force the business back to residential use only; or make a “temporary use” exemption to a maximum three years. Council unanimously voted in favour of the latter. “We have never done one before; this would be a first,” town planner Robin Paquette said prior to the April 24 vote. “This would be for a threeyear time frame that can give extensions of three years.” Mayor David Reid said the business is popular, clean, with no parking issues, and doesn’t upset neighbours. It is a good example of a success-

ful home-based business. However, he also supports the current bylaws as they are written. He said the right solution is to grant an exemption. It prevents abuse by a less reputable future owner or others who might flaunt the rules. He also addressed members of the public and some on council who said the issue was poorly handled by the municipality. They said one complaint shouldn’t have caused such turmoil for the Wilsons. And at least one member of council has been to the shed and saw products for sale. Town staff is not allowed to selectively enforce bylaws. They must conduct investigations as per provincial rules. And while some at town

uncertain future. A new council might reject a three-year extension. The Wilsons deserve closure, he indicated. That’s when Stack brought forth a motion forcing the town to solve the problem and, among other ideas, create a mandatory registry for homebased businesses. The motion was deferred. Chief administrative officer Michael Wildman called it a “lengthy” motion. Others said it came as a surprise and they would need time to study the wording before voting in favour. It is unclear if the motion would meet with the town lawyer’s approval, either. However, Stack did win a commitment to solve the issue before the end of the year. An upcoming review of zoning bylaws is considered an ideal time to deal with it, Reid said.

hall knew the shed was being used for commercial purposes, the right people who might be able to link what is on paper with the reality weren’t aware. Reid also doesn’t let the Wilsons escape blame. The couple maintains the shed was to be for storage, but when the business grew they didn’t think it would be a problem to expand it. “I don’t accept that we never did anything about it. Had they told us is in the beginning they would not have gotten a permit,” Reid said. “And we would not be dealing with it today. So there was some onus on the Wilsons too.” Reeve Walter Stack was among those who didn’t like the proposition that the business be left to ponder an

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

This time around, the process to create a fire services master plan will be more inclusive of all stakeholders. That was the message from consultants hired to start, for the second time, the exercise of building a guiding document for Arnprior Fire Department. The first attempt was eventually dropped because promised consultations with councillors were not fulfilled, nor were opinions gathered from the town’s volunteer firefighters. Performance Concepts consultant Todd McDonald reiterated the point several times at the April 20 special meeting of council. “There is no preordained story line for the fire master plan. I just want to make that clear. This is not our fire master plan. It is the Town of Arnprior’s, so take ownership,” McDonald said. “There is no shortage of issues.” An issue outside the scope of the master plan is finding a new fire chief after the sudden and mysterious departure of the last one. It hasn’t been made public whether John Okum resigned or was fired. The search for a new chief continues. Another has to do with the loss — due to retirement — of some volunteer firefighters who were especially good at the fundraising side. Many past purchases of equipment are thanks to firefighter efforts. And now that money from

Nevada rip-tickets is no longer going to the department, a significant fundraising source is gone. That leads to challenges the master plan will address. • Rescue truck replacement with effective, affordable options; • Reverse eroding firefighter turnout on Monday to Friday daytime emergency calls; • Get a better handle on full-time staff roles, productivity, and effectiveness; • Improve ability to track and measure core activities and outcomes; • Build strong, sustainable management model and volunteer culture; • New compensation, training, call response, and dispatch approaches and models; • Lifecycle needs and pressures on longer term capital. The timeline leading up to completion of the master plan, by budget season in late fall, includes a meeting already with firefighters, phone interviews with individual members of council, a working document by May, and an open house for the public in June. The operation advisory committee will also be involved, and council will vote on the plan possibly in September. “This time we want to get it right and get it done,” Reeve Walter Stack said. “Stakeholder input was lacking.” Mayor David Reid called it an “important document” to rely on.

Town works to separate residential, commercial areas DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A lengthy discussion at the council table often came back to ensuring Arnprior businesses are located in three clusters, and away from bleeding into residential areas. A growth-guiding document called the official plan will be updated later this year. It was brought to the April 24 regular meeting by Meridian Planning consultant Nick McDonald and town planner Robin Paquette. They suggested zoning changes on Madawaska Boulevard and part of Daniel Street, along with issues related to the airport area. McDonald said he sees Madawaska becoming more residential over the coming decades. Designed as a highway, it has evolved into an arterial main street. He recommends changing the current employment-commercial zoning to commercial-residential. That would prevent small manufacturers (a cabinet maker, for example) from setting up shop on the main entry way to town, in favour of locating in the existing industrial park or the vacant lands nearby. The commercial-residential zoning would allow for tall condos with ground-floor businesses. There is also a willingness to see a small food store and a pharmacy on that side of town, along with another seniors’ complex.

Chief administrative officer Michael Wildman agreed when Reeve Walter Stack said he envisioned the boulevard to look like Carling Avenue in Ottawa, a mix of businesses and apartment buildings. Wildman said it would “soften” the “harsh environment” of the boulevard by including residential uses. He also favours density in the form of tall apartment buildings for sustainability reasons. At least some folks in town have long expressed fear of Arnprior becoming a bedroom community similar to Stittsville. While it is true individual councillors have called for more residential units to help drive down tax increases, they also talked often during the meeting about luring businesses to vacancies at the town’s three commercial areas: Madawaska, Daniel and the downtown core. All agreed that it isn’t about driving business from town, but letting change occur organically and naturally. Diminishing residential land is another problem. At its current rate, residential development will be maxed out in a few years. Some on council want zoning changes to allow for development in new areas. Mayor David Reid asked about building more homes on Nylene Canada’s property. A portion of it is wetland, of course, so it won’t be developed. The company hasn’t announced plans to expand, nor has it signalled a willingness to sell any lands. “I’m just as happy to keep it as is,” Reid

said. The conversation shifted to Daniel Street west of the LCBO (up Havey Hill) to near Edey Street. The idea here is to shift zoning from mixed commercial-residential to primarily residential and “very minimal” housesized commercial. That would force business up to the mall area or the downtown core while relieving some of the busy traffic along that stretch of the road. Reid agreed, saying it will make the business clusters more vibrant. He wants to stop the bleeding of business to areas such as James Street where a four-unit business that includes a gym is essentially in a residential area. If the fairgrounds are sold, as the Arnprior Fair Society intends, the town will likely shift zoning from park to residential. However, it may retain a larger-than-normal portion for parkland. By law, developers have to set aside five per cent of a neighbourhood for parkland (or pay cash-in-lieu). The town may want more, since the piece directly behind the Nick Smith Centre is ideal for soccer fields or tennis courts. Another discussion involved the former Sullivan’s garage on McLachlin Street. The owner asked to keep it commercial to do small-scale work there. Reid and others said it should be residential if sold. Now that rail is gone, the area is for homes.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Province of Ontario one correction away from debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, senior economist with RBC Robert Hogue said “tough medicine” is needed to tackle the debt. “Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent,” he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded,

that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a “hard target for debt to GDP ratio” that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave — generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

The more we give, the happier we feel: says Seniors at Home To the editor:

I write this letter with great appreciation for the efforts of Glenn Miller (letter to the editor of April 26) with regards to supporting Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors At Home and our transportation crisis. For the past 37 years, our community support service has strived to meet the growing needs of our community with a dedicated, caring staff and selfless volunteers who give of their own personal time to contribute to our agency’s need and give back to our community. In the last number of years we have seen significant growth in many areas, one being transportation requests for both in town and out of town drives. As our agency is only funded by the Ministry of Health

and Long Term Care 46 per cent, the remaining financial resources and human resources are dependent on the support of our community. Through various fundraising activities and campaigns we strive each year to meet our budgetary requirements and with the generosity of the individual’s personal time we were able to meet our client’s needs. What Glenn writes about in his letter is factual. On a monthly basis we are having upwards of 29 individuals in our community requesting transportation to medical appointments outside of Arnprior who are unable to attend them due to lack of volunteer drivers. I appreciate Glenn putting a face to the numbers. These are our neighbours, friends and maybe relatives, your mother, father or grandparent who rely on our trans-

portation service to get them to their medical appointments. These clients are fellow members of our community who do not have transportation of their own. They are not as independent as you and I. Our agency is here to help them and we can’t always help them and that frustrates me to no end. The number of our agency volunteer drivers has gone from over 20 down to eight-10, depending on vacations. However our requests steadily increase to over 600 trips a month for out of town transportation alone. Maybe the word volunteer scares people away? What if I said you could set your own hours? What if you knew the money you receive for the driving (.40 cents per kilometer) is tax free? What if I said that you may need this service one day and call for it and it is

Red maples are mysterious trees pen is one, producing long, drooping catkins that contain stamens on some trees and pistils on others. Maples are a more complex group. Many species have individual trees that bear flowers containing both sexes while other individual trees produce unisexual flowers but have both types on the same tree. And then there are red maples, whose flowers are currently making forests blush red. Now, I’m referring to our native red maple, not the common cultivar of Norway maple planted in urban settings that bears red leaves all summer. Most young red maples produce flowers containing only one sex (thus, some trees are male, others female). To my eye, female flowers are redder than male flowers, which display an orange tint. Older trees can bear both flower sexes but they are Michael Runtz housed on different branches. What

MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

When I worked in Algonquin Park, my friend, mentor, and boss Dan Strickland used to talk about the “spring colours.” Our area is famous for the “fall colours” that in autumn paint hillsides with dazzling shades of orange, red, and yellow but Dan astutely noted that in early spring, forests also display a flush of colour, albeit one considerably more subtle than the brazen colours that dominate the autumn landscape. He was referring to the soft greens, greys, and pinks that appear when tree leaves first begin to open. Other colours are present in early spring and while they aren’t due to the opening of leaves, trees do create them. Those colours arise from tree flowers that are currently on display in local forests. Some, like those of sugar maple and ironwood, are yellow-green while others, like those of pin cherry and downy serviceberry, are white. Some species of trees sport “perfect” flowers in which both the stamens, the male parts that produce pollen, and the pistil, the female part that receives pollen and contains eggs that after fertilization become seeds, are housed in one package. Chokecherries bear this type of flower.

Red Maples’ flowers are currently making forests blush red.

Other trees bear flowers that contain only one sex. In white pines, each tree holds both flower sexes but the female flowers are up high while the male flowers are lower down on the tree. Pines are wind pollinated so this physical separation helps prevent self-pollination (pollen cannot rise from a tree’s male flowers onto its female flowers positioned high above them), and explains why pine cones are always near the top of a tree. Some species produce only one sex of flower on individual trees. Trembling as-

is more unusual is that in the autumn, the leaves of trees that contain only female flowers turn bright yellow while those of trees with male flowers turn bright red! There is another, even more unusual feature of rd maples. In late winter and early spring, Moose seek them out to devour strips of their bark. They attain these by jabbing their lower incisors (like white-tailed deer, Moose lack upper incisors) into the bark and ripping it upwards, producing distinctive marks on the trunk. Oddly, moose ignore the bark of sugar maples, which usually greatly outnumber red maples in a forest. Why moose select only red maples remains unknown. Red Maples truly are trees of mystery! Book seeks to stack the financial deck in reader’s favour DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

When it comes to personal finance, many Canadians feel the deck is stacked against them. Experts dominate the stocks industry, the rich get richer, and everyone else continues to rack up debt. Enter Kevin Ikeno, a father of five with 15 years experience in the financial services industry. (He recently moved home to Renfrew to become branch manager of an Arnprior bank.) His new book, Stacking the Deck, reveals the current financial landscape and what he calls an understandable path to bettering your position and future. “Finance isn’t a scary topic, even if your finances are a mess,” he said. “Anything is possible if you work hard enough.” Ikeno’s Eureka moment came during an argument between his toddlers over a card game. His ‘cards’ include the right knowledge, tools, resources, and a sound plan. However, first up is conquering the fear to confront one’s financial situation. Too many people, he said, rarely evaluate the money coming in and going out, let alone discuss it with a partner or expert. Many clients have told Ikeno that he explains their situation using clear and concise terminology. That also prompted the book.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURE

“Personal finance is one of the most important aspects of everyone’s life, and yet so many people tell me that they don’t understand it or know where to start,” he said. “Stacking your financial deck is pretty simple once you know how to play the cards.” One way to bring in more income is to spend more. Ikeno tells the story of his parents who asked him about reward points. He helped set them on the path that eventually paid off in gifts. “I went to their place for Christmas and my father took me aside to say, ‘Thank you. Your advice meant Christmas was free this year, the gifts and food.’ Reward points accumulated from paying for staples like gasoline - can really add up.” He also suggests monitoring credit cards on a daily or weekly basis. There is no need to wait for a surprise at the end of the month. Paying them down little by little throughout the month is more manageable, he said. Near the back of the book is a questionnaire that helps compare your stage of life and income. It is meant to help you understand where you are at and where you are going. Ikeno will sign copies of Stacking the Deck on Saturday, May 6, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Barrhaven Chapters. The book is available there, and on Amazon. Derek Dunn/Metroland

Town to fill a time capsule for 2067 DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Hey, Grade 6 students — remember the year 2067. That’s when your photo and predictions of your future will be opened for the world to see. Arnprior and District Museum curator Janet Carlile told council at the April 24 meeting that a time capsule is a good way to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The county is doing one, but only has limited space for items from various municipalities.

One could be done that would include the kids’ photos and accounts of where they think they will be and what they will be doing 50 years from now. Other ideas include photos of new houses, before and after of downtown revitalization, new cars and their features and prices, a 150th Arnprior passport, and photos of the town from 150 years ago. The capsule could be stored in the museum, suspended from the ceiling of the ground floor vault with instructions as to when it can be opened. Carlile believes the costs will be negligible. Coun. Frank Dugal volunteered his photography services.

Liberal budget hides $5-billion deficit from Ontarians: Yakabuski April 27, Kathleen Wynne’s provincial government tabled its 2017 budget that continues the path of out of control spending while hiding a massive operational deficit which will result in degraded services that will make life harder for Ontarians, says RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski. “The government is hiding more than $5 billion operational deficit through cash grabs, unauthorized pension assets, and one-time and unusual revenue. The Wynne Liberals are cooking the books a year before the next election,” said a press release from the MPP’s office. “Additionally, the Liberals have no plan in this budget to get the debt under control.

They’ve more than doubled the debt in just 14 years, and Ontario is worse off as a result. Moreover, it is eroding the services families depend on, and placing a burden on future generations, which they do not deserve.” Nothing in the budget spoke specifically about the expansion of Highway 417, he added. “The lack of twinning for 417 is certainly an issue I will be following-up at the earliest opportunity with the Minister of Transportation” said Yakabuski. Additionally, Yakabuski said that although the government voted down his Gas Tax Private Member’s Bill last month, he had hoped the Liberals would have included it in their budget

measures and expand the gas tax to all municipalities and not just those with public transportation systems. “Kathleen Wynne had an opportunity today to level the playing field in regards to the gas tax,” said Yakabuski. “Instead she picked politics over good public policy and as a result our roadways and bridges will not get the funding they need.” The release goes on to say: “A hidden deficit, scattershot spending to bribe voters with their own money, the continued fire sale of Hydro One, and once again ignoring rural Ontario. For these reasons John Yakabuski, and the entire PC Party, will be voting against this reckless budget. “

Emerson’s mouse catching antics threw Mother into a fit Mother couldn’t understand how a mouse could get into the house. There were no holes in the baseboards like the ones at the Northcote School, she saw to that. All the doors going into the house shut tight, and yet during the winter, Father set at least two traps before he went to bed, and it was nothing to hear a mousetrap snap in the middle of the night downstairs. And I would know,

and yet I never actually saw him do it, that Father would slide the lid off the Findlay Oval, and the dead mouse would be fed into the fire box. But spring had arrived, and the mice, to Mother’s great relief, now preferred the barns. My brother Emerson loved the mice. He was sure if he caught one, he could train it to do tricks, and it would become a pet. Mother, of course, forbid him to even think such thoughts. Then one night I saw Emerson do something I was sure would send him right off to reform school, which I heard talked of by the Senior Fourth boys, but knew little about. All I knew was it was the last place on earth any youngster wanted to be. Somehow Emerson had caught a mouse out in the barn, and he stood in the frame of the kitchen door, with the mouse dangling by its tail from his clenched fist. He announced he was going to train the squirming and squawking thing to do tricks, and would charge at least a nickel for the show he expected to put on for the entire neighbourhood. Well! Mother’s screams could be heard in Admaston. My sister Audrey moved like a bullet to climb onto a chair, and I ran behind the curtain that hung in the staircase leading to the upstairs, peaking out to watch, but well away from the action. Father never took his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal. He was well used to Emerson’s antics, and unless

he was causing someone bodily harm, shut his mind and his eyes to whatever my brother was up to. Mother came at Emerson swinging a towel in the general direction of the mouse, only connecting after several tries. I didn’t think that was a smart thing for her to do, because once she hit the mouse, it went flying off Emerson’s clenched fingers, and vanished into the parlour, the closest door of escape. The first thing Mother ordered Emerson to do was go to the wash basin, and scrub his hands thoroughly with the lye soap. She was sure every disease known to man was first started by a mouse. She told Father she wasn’t going to bed until the mouse was caught. All Father said was, “better make a cup of tea, you’ll be up a long time.” Well, the mouse was gone. There was no doubt about it. It found a safe haven in some crevice in the old log house, and Audrey said she wouldn’t be surprised if it stayed hidden over the sum-

mer and into the winter. Well, such a fuss! I thought this would be a good time to bring up the issue of bringing a barn cat into the house, strictly as a mouser. Well, Mother wasn’t having anything to do with that idea either. Animals belonged in the barn, and that’s all there was to it. It was pitch dark outside when it was finally decided we would all go to bed. Mother ordered Father to put out at least four traps, convinced the mouse couldn’t avoid all of them. Father went to the wood shed, and set the traps, one in the parlour, and three in the kitchen. I knew the poor mouse didn’t stand a chance. Sleep didn’t come easily for me that night, as I pictured in my mind’s eye, the poor terrified mouse looking for an escape. And then it happened. Not one mouse trap snapped, but four in a row! Well, that tore it. Mother said a barn cat could be brought into the house at bedtime, but she wanted it out first thing in the morning. After that we never knew if the cat caught a mouse or not. But Mother went to bed content, I was thrilled to have a cat in the house, even overnight, and my brother Emerson still thought he could make a pile of money if he could teach a mouse to do tricks.

McNab Braeside marks Canada’s 150th with cross township relay TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It’s a relay like no other. McNab/Braeside is marking Canada’s sesquicentennial with Relay 150 across the township, hoping the efforts make it into the Guinness World Records. The relay starts at Sand Point at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 and will finish at the Waba Cottage Museum in White Lake. The announcement was made during a committee meeting on April 24 at the McNab/Braeside municipal office. Heather Lang, township councillor and committee chair, says the event gives them a number of reasons to celebrate. “The McNab/Braeside 150 relay is a chance for us to not only celebrate Canada’s 150th, but also a chance to showcase our township and to engage residents of all ages/abilities in having a fun day,” said Lang. “We also want to feature different modes of transportation, because we are going for a Guinness World Record based on different modes of transportation. So, we are looking for wacky ideas, we are looking for lots of energy and participation.” Some of the modes of transportation they are hoping for include walking, running, cycling, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, row/paddle boats, skateboards, tractor wheelbarrows, scooters — even snowshoes — all while passing a baton. The baton itself will be created by the Valley Carver, Dub Juby. It will include a GPS tracker, so the route will be captured in real time. “We gave him a set of requirements: it should float and be fairly visible, functionally to hand off, and maybe a strap,” said John Brady, committee member. “We have also given him artistic

township. It will also highlight some of the clubs and activities that people in the township take part in — dragon boating, playing soccer, Special Olympics, the farmers market,” said Lang. The route will travel the Village of Braeside, down Division Street, across the Pine Grove overpass, to Wellington Park, down White Lake Road to Clay Bank boat launch, to Alexandra Park, to the farmers market, to Burnstown Beach and to the Village of White Lake, before ending at the museum. There will be a big celebration with local entertainment, face-painting, bouncy castle, piper presentation and more. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett praised the dedication of the chair and the entire committee. “Coun. Lang and her volunteers have put a lot of hours and a lot of hard work into this to showcase our township with a unique event,” said Peckett. “I hope that people will look at this as an opportunity to come out and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday and join in all the fun.” The committee is looking for people to volunteer for the relay, which is free to take part in, and cheer people on. Anyone who wants to take part is encouraged to contact the township by June 1 for planning purposes, although everyone is welcome for the event. “We are hoping people will be quite creative,” said Lang. “We hope residents will come out and cheer on the baton carriers. It’s different. What better way to be involved?” They are also looking for volunteers, water and food donations, and items for a time capsule. Rhonda McMaster, Cabi stylist and Bluefish parent, recently held a Cabi fashion experience to raise funds for the Bluefish Swim Club. On hand to accept the donation were, from left, Bluefish vice president Jenn Wroe, head coach Shawn Moffatt, swimmer Elena Williamson, McMaster, and swimmer Noah Pritchard.

Bluefish busy with fundraising, swim-a-thon preparation JEREMIAH GILLETT

The Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club is having a great 2016/17 season. Building on the success of previous years, the club currently has its largest ever enrolment with 60 athletes. But it takes more than training to build these athletes; it also takes community support. Recently Rhonda McMaster, Cabi stylist and Bluefish parent, held a Cabi Fashion Experience for Bluefish moms, grandmothers and friends. McMaster donated $356, a portion of proceeds from the event, to support the Bluefish club. While the swimmers, from all levels, prepare for the upcoming Blackfly Swim Meet in Deep River, their efforts will really be put to the test at the annual Swim-A-Thon on May 15, 16 and 17. This event, held annually by swim clubs across Canada, raises funds to keep local teams and the Swim Canada program going and develop-

ing young athletes. The theme of this year’s event is “True Viking Grit,” motivated by the story of Goulaugur Frioporsson, a 22-year-old Icelandic man who swam for his life for six hours in icy waters to reach his village after the boat he was in capsized. While the Nick Smith pool won’t be as frigid, the 60 Arnprior Bluefish swimmers will each be attempting to swim five kilometres in two hours. If you know a swimmer, see a member of the club around your neighbourhood or at upcoming dates at the Metro in Arnprior, or if you like, please go online to support this great team and the opportunities for these and future swimmers at http://ontarioswimathon.ca/absc. For more information about the Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club, including registration forms, a gallery of images and list of contacts, visit their website at www.arnpriorbluefish.net. Please take a moment to support their efforts.

Eagles fly high

18 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, May 4, 2017

The Flying Eagles topped off a fun season of Sunday night hockey by winning all three games in a mini tournament with three other Sunday night teams in February at the Nick Smith Centre. Two of the wins came as a result of ‘shoot-outs’ after the games were tied at the end of regulation which highlighted how close all the teams were in calibre. Team members are Greg Verch, Craig Collins, Kevin Ledgerwood, Jeff Heath, Malcolm Urquhart, Mike Poirier, JP Remillard, Dave Pilkington, Harold Deacon, Cory Tyo and Jeff Vaive. Missing from the picture is Ken Postma.

Cooper Brown has strong finish at Augusta University

Renfrew’s Cooper Brown golfed in six events for Augusta University this season and shot par or better six times. His best finish was a tie for 12th at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. His low round was a 70 (-2) in the Jaguars’ home event, the 3M Augusta Invitational. Brown competed in 18 rounds of Division I golf with an average score of 73.94 across his six tournaments. The Augusta University men’s golf team won the MidEastern Athletic Conference Championship for the third year in a row, after shooting 43-under par across three days at Crosswinds Golf Club. Augusta finished round three 21-under par and won the event by 36 strokes to receive an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament starting May 15. Although Brown’s season is over because he did not make the top five team, Augusta staff says all of the players, including Brown, helped the team reach the postseason.

In memory of Carl Warren November 1940 – May 4, 2016 In loving memory of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. We only just lost you, the pain is hard to bear. Do we have to go through life knowing you’re not there? Please someone explain to us why he had to go. Are there any reasons we really need to know? We sit here and remember all the lovely times we shared The talks and laughter of everyone you cared. We are told the pain will ease in time, and we will think of him without a tear. But that will be impossible we need to have him here. He was our very world to us, our ever guiding star. Just kiss us softly on the cheek and tell us where you are. Carl, one year has passed and we all miss you so much every day and night. Love you always, forget you never. Your loving wife Leona and your children, Donna, Clint and family, Jim, Kelli and family

Smiles all around at free dentistry day

On Saturday, April 22, Dentistry@Arnprior in the Arnprior Mall sponsored their first event offering free dentistry. Many volunteers, including five dentists, attended and were able to offer treatment to 61 patients and delivered dentistry worth $25,000. Arnprior Mayor David Reid, Coun. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Barsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Accept that sometimes things will not go your way, Aries. However, you can learn to adapt and find balance in any situation you find yourself in.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Next week may be a better time to make a big decision, Leo. Coast along for a little bit longer and get a feel for the lay of the land before making your decision.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Think of something you can do that will be a big risk and out of character, Sagittarius. It may give you a rush of adrenaline this week and pave the way for new interests.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Discovering all of the answers need not be your goal all the time, Taurus. Keep in mind that the journey can sometimes be more rewarding than the destination.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Coming across memorabilia or old photographs may have you thinking about those who came before you, Virgo. It is a good week for introspection and reminiscing.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you can handle whatever comes your way. You are the only one who can derail your plans.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, don’t hesitate to let others know how much they mean to you. Such simple gestures will be appreciated and help you maintain strong relationships with those you love most.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, don’t let any opportunity pass you by this week — even those that may seem like they won’t yield much reward. Everything is a learning opportunity.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Someone you wouldn’t normally look to for advice provides some invaluable wisdom in the days ahead, Aquarius. Heed this advice and express your gratitude.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, when in doubt, speak with someone who has more experience than you. It’s a big person who can accept help when it’s needed, and others will be willing to help.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Obsessive thoughts will not make the solution to a problem come any easier. It’s better if you clear your head and then maybe the ideas will arrive when you least expect.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, instead of focusing on all of the little details, look at the bigger picture. This will prove to be the inspiration you need to stay motivated.
