Ontario’s first female Optimist Club opens in Arnprior DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior is home to Ontario and possibly Canada’s first Optimist Club for women. A non-profit service organization focused on children’s needs, Optimist International has 2,900 clubs and almost 87,000 in more than 35 countries throughout other world. It was founded in 1919. Almost 100 years later it has welcomed a new kind of club: The Arnprior

Optimist-ic Women’s Club. The all female business-focused group was founded by its first president, Stephanie Lorincz. “I joined the chamber of commerce but wanted to be part of a more community-involved group,” said Lorincz, an advisor at SunLife. “So I talked to Wes (Schnob) and I fell in love with it.” She didn’t want to “impose” on the men’s group by asking to join, started poking around social media for interest in starting a women’s

group. It didn’t take long to pull together 18 like-minded women. Schnob, president of Arnprior Optimists, didn’t hesitate. He helped the group receive approval from high levels of the club, and to implement bylaws and other rules. No one can join the Optimists unless sponsored by a member in good standing. “I was excited about the club and about helping with getting it off the ground and with the executive,” Schnob said.

The women’s group plans to help the wellestablished Optimists with its events, such as the annual winter carnival. A bursary will be offered to a local student planning to take business courses at a post-secondary level. They will also host their own events; a barbecue at a club member’s business, possible on July 15. Other socials will also bring awareness to the business side. Networking is an important component for the Optimist-ic Women’s Club. See MAYOR, page 16

Townships prepare to clean up after historic flooding TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The Ottawa River water levels are receding after epic flooding last week, but officials are advising residents to be patient as plans for cleanup are in the works. As of Sunday, May 14 the water was down 50 cm from the peak and dropping about 15 cm per day according to Steve Osipenko, acting commander with County of Renfrew Paramedic Service and community emergency management co-ordinator for Horton and the county. The weekend rain had little or no effect on the Ottawa River levels. In a press release on May 11 The Pembroke District of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry advised residents that a flood warning is still in effect for Renfrew County. The warning is in effect until May 19. A meeting was held in Horton on May 15 to discuss the effects of the flood. In a statement Osipenko had one main message for residents. “Please be patient and leave walls in place. Messaging to the affected residents on a strategy for removal and disposal of the sandbags as well and debris management will be announced this week,” said Osipenko. “It will take a few weeks for the water to drop back to a normal level. Please watch the Horton Township website for next steps.”

Governments, citizens should get used to Ottawa River flooding DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Governments and citizens had better get used to extreme weather events such as the recent Ottawa River flooding and learn to adapt, says a well-known scientist from Renfrew county. Ole Hendrickson is with Ottawa River Institute, a group that fosters sustainable communities and ecological integrity in the watershed. The longtime environmental scientist said the link between climate change and flooding that damaged thousands of homes and cottages from Pembroke to Montreal is indisputable. “Yes, there’s a lot of scientific evidence that links catastrophes with changes in the environment,” Hendrickson said. “We are going to see these events with increasing frequency.” Warm air causes evaporation and can hold more moisture, he explained. That promotes drought. Then when it does rain, it pours. The ground can’t hold the water so droughts return. An aggravating factor is the jet stream. The

warming Arctic and constant equatorial temperatures are affecting it. The jet stream is breaking up and becoming more wavy and stalling. The stalling leads to prolonged rainstorms like the recent one that hit at the worst possible time, during spring run-off. “The timing was bad because there were still snow loads in the headwaters and places like that, along with the usual spring rain,” he said. “It’s the most serious spring flooding we’ve seen in our lifetime,” Governments can better adapt to the new reality in a number of ways, he suggested. The County of Renfrew ought to have an expert in charge of water quantity. That person can oversee emergency preparedness and relief efforts. “Governments need to become more engaged,” Hendrickson said. “What happens is that a big event like this comes along and everyone is concerned about the environment, then we go back to our regular lives.” He is sure there are everyday, practical decisions for the expert to make, including manure

Provincial assistance program expanded TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program has now been expanded to include the Town of Arnprior. During a public meeting at Horton Township on May 15, Stephen Seller, municipal advisor from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, explained they had more information since the first activation to expand the program and added the town on May 5. “We heard enough and had enough information that there were some impacts in Arnprior that they got in part of that expanded activa-

tion,” said Seller. The program helps victims of natural disasters get back on their feet. It offers financial assistance to help cover emergency expenses, clean-up expenses and costs to repair or replace essential property. Secondary residences and cottages are not eligible for assistance. The deadline to submit an application is Sept. 5. For program guidelines, forms, eligibility information and frequently asked questions, visit Ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance or call 1-844780-8925 or email DisasterAssistance@ontario. ca.@ontario.ca.

floodplain areas. Henderickson said the Liberals are better than the previous Conservative government when it comes to environmental issues, but they have a long way to go yet. Putting an end to subsidies for fossil fuel producers and redirecting that money to sustainable energy initiatives would be a good start. “It’s going to be a lot cheaper in the long run,” he said. Hendrickson was a scientist in the federal government for many years. He said his department made simple, inexpensive suggestions in the 1990s that would have helped tremendously today. They were never really implemented, he said.

storage approvals for farmers who don’t want to contaminate waterways. Another idea is to train volunteers in sandbagging and other emergency skills. In Germany entire families are signed on as volunteers with knowledge and talents they put to use during specific disasters. The army should be given more training and deployment opportunities related to climaterelated catastrophes too, he added. “A little bit of planning goes a long way.” People can adapt by no longer finishing basements, or not having basements at all in floodplains. They should build on higher ground or use stilts, he said, adding that it is time municipalities stopped allowing people to build in

Patterson says the flooding really showed the Valley spirit. “People really care for each other and appreciate the support of those stepping forward,” said Patterson. “The McNab/Braeside Fire Department really stood out during this crisis.” Osipenko thought Horton Township’s response was well executed by staff in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan that is in place and says the community response was unbelievable. They also learned a few things for the future. “We learned that we need to have a tutorial poster created on how to make sandbags. “The volunteers did a great job, but we can’t assume everyone knows the proper way to fill them or how to build strong a sandbag wall,” said Osipenko. “They did a great job with a little

Arnprior water tank could prove costly fix: town staff One of two clearwell storage tanks at the water filtration plant beside Nick Smith Centre, built 50 years ago, has leaked since at least last summer. DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior taxpayers could be in for a big bill if smaller fixes don’t solve a municipal water tank’s persistent leak. If a new tank is needed, it could cost upwards of $2 million. One of two clearwell storage tanks at the water filtration plant beside Nick Smith Centre, built 50 years ago, has leaked since at least last summer. The fear is that if left unrepaired, it

could destroy important equipment in the basement. So the town hired a business to locate the source using compressed air and video. Neither worked. The tank was then emptied. A few cracks on the concrete floor and walls were sealed, costing the town about $59,000. But the link continued. So it was drained again. Acting on a consultant’s recommendation, staff are doing a “urethane injection repair” on one section.

“Once the injection is complete the tank will be disinfected and put back into service for the summer months,” reads public works director John Steckly’s report tabled at the May 8 council meeting. Stantec Consulting suggested a two-phase approach should the leak maintain itself into summer. A preliminary repair of between $138,000 and $174,000 would see a waterproof-lining system placed inside the tank. It could prolong the tank’s life by 10 to 15 years.

If that doesn’t work, a complete repair of between $220,000 and $310,000 would see high-pressure cleaning and another liner. That pushes the final cost — to a tank nearing the end of its life cycle — to as much as $500,000. “We are at the point where if the first round of repairs doesn’t work some further discussion will need to take place (with council),” Steckly concluded. Mayor David Reid is OK with doing Phase 1 if it comes to that. But

he also did a quick calculation and determined a complete replacement may be wiser, given the amortization ($33,000) rates are similar and new ones last 80 years longer. However, he added that when heavy debts are retired in a few years the town will be in a better position to take on major expenses. It was left at Steckly’s return to council should the current fix not be sufficient. “Well then, I hope we don’t hear from you,” Reid joked. Get expert advice today. Charges laid in crash SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

a registered nurse who works at an addiction medicine clinic. “Working with the population I work with and my clients, it helps me understand how addiction leads people to make poor choices,” said Joel. The Fosters are sorely missed in the community. “Our community has suffered a huge loss as this wonderful couple who just retired gave their all to the folks of the Town of Renfrew for many years,” said Renfrew Coun. Kate Windle following the crash. Doug ran Foster’s Construction for decades and is former fire chief Randy Foster’s brother. Joan, who is originally from Arnprior, operated hair salon Hairitage in Renfrew for 39 years and had just retired. Marcia Foster, along with her brothers Skyler and Joel, still profoundly feel the loss of their parents. “They were both entrepreneurs in the community,” said Marcia. “Over the course of his career, Dad changed the landscape of Renfrew and area. He was well-respected in his line of work.” He worked on many of the area’s most beautiful homes, she said, including the Kenopic house on Albert Street. Her mom gave of herself for the betterment of the community. “She volunteered for hospice and Welcome Wagon and delivered for Meals on Wheels,” said Marcia. “They were really involved in the community, active in their church and loved to travel.” -with files from Tiffany Lepack

Ottawa police have laid charges in the December 2016 crash that killed two prominent Renfrew citizens. Douglas Foster, 69, and Joan Foster, 66, both of Renfrew, died in a head-on collision on March Road just south of Hwy. 417 near Carp on Sunday, Dec. 4. John Anstie, 24, of Kanata, was charged in March with two counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death. At the time of the crash, he was transported to hospital in serious condition. The couple’s son, Joel Foster, says no one wins with the charges being laid. “He could plead guilty next week or it could go to trial and drag on for many months. Either way, a sense of closure feels elusive. Nothing can undo the damage to both our families and communities.” He questions what Anstie is feeling and would like time to talk to him but knows that is not possible as the case is in front of the courts. “Dialogue would be really helpful right now while the wounds are still fresh, but it won’t be possible until well after the wounds have begun to scab over, and may never happen at all.” Questions remain for Joel. “I feel I need to understand him. Does he feel any remorse? What’s his life like? Does he have people who love him? Who SEPTIC SYSTEMS are his friends, and has he told them about the EST. 1975 accident? How did they react? Is he feel• Excavation • Rock Hammer ing shame?” Joel • Rock Walls • Screened Topsoil asked. “Without • Lot Clearing • Equipment Rental dialogue, we’re • Aggregates • Floating left in emotional limbo, not knowTom 613-649-2716 ing how we feel, 0514. Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

Monthly Column – May 2017 It seems as often as not, water is an issue when springtime comes to Ontario. We’re either lamenting its shortage or damn near drowning in it. I recall some years when there was next to no snowmelt and very little spring rain. In one of those years, the Bark Lake Reservoir did not fill until the first week of July. As everyone knows, this year has been quite different. While there have been years where we have had flooding on the Ottawa River, other years on the Madawaska River, and yet other years on the Bonnechere River— this is the first year that I have seen extensive flooding on all three. Extensive is probably not the right word, unprecedented would likely be more appropriate. I’ve never seen anything like it in my lifetime, and others who have been around a lot longer than me concur. At the time of writing this column (May 11th), the waters have just begun to recede for the second time. They first peaked a few weeks ago, but unusually high rain across the entire basin of each of the rivers (and their tributaries) turned an improving situation into one that became almost unimaginable for many people. For those affected first by rising water levels, and then flooding, it has consumed much of their lives for well over a month. Unfortunately, they will be dealing with it for some time to come. Even without more heavy rain, it will still take a while for the waters to decline to normal seasonal levels. At that point, people will be able to more accurately and completely assess the damage to their properties. I expect the cost to be significant, but whatever it might be, it cannot take into consideration the toll exacted upon the lives of those affected. They have been in my thoughts and prayers since this crisis began and will continue to be. I am grateful that Bill Mauro, the Minister of Municipal Affairs responded positively to my request— and the requests of our municipal leaders—in activating the Disaster Recovery Assistance Program only four days after I had raised the issue in the Legislature. I am certain this will be of some comfort to those who are wondering what their next steps might be. My office has been extremely busy fielding questions and inquiries from constituents, addressing various aspects of this year’s catastrophic event. I am sure that my municipal partners have been no less busy. Many of their inquiries center around the application process for assistance under the program. My office can continue to help in that regard. There are many questions that need to be answered regarding this spring’s flooding and I plan to convene a meeting that will hopefully accomplish exactly that. But for now, while all affected are still bailing water, we must concentrate on that immediate task. One of the most gratifying results of this whole mess has been witnessing once again, the manifestation of what makes the Valley special: our commitment to each other, neighbours helping one another; those not directly affected are helping those who are – doing what they could to mitigate the effect of Mother Nature’s wrath. Whenever there is a crisis, afterwards it always makes me prouder to say, “I’m from the Valley.” I am sure you feel the same way too. Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, May 18, 2017 7

OPINION

Home ownership hard to come by There’s no place like home. This phrase is most famously associated with Dorothy in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” who voiced this sentiment after arriving back in Kansas after her experience with the Yellow Brick Road and the Emerald City. Home is a unique place, as Dorothy observed. Indeed, crooner Bing Crosby tied the lure of home with the appeal of Christmas in his 1943 hit “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” a song which is now considered a Christmas standard, probably because it ties together those two most beloved concepts, home and Christmas. Since pioneer times, a home has always been a most desired goal for Canadians. Early settlers worked endlessly to clear their land so they could build a home there, however modest in the beginning. But whether modest or eventually palatial, having a home has been paramount for generations of Canadians. And why not? A home evokes a special feeling. It’s where you can relax, can feel in control and can be yourself. It’s that small piece of the world where, whether you are labourer or banker, you are in charge. It’s your space, pure and simple. And now this long-time scenario is being

threatened not by decreasing demand or a change in societal attitudes but rather by rising prices. The real estate market in Canada’s two most prominent cities, Vancouver and Toronto, is running rampant. In Toronto, average house prices have reached $916,567, up more than 33 percent from just a year earlier. For these two cities, home ownership has become exclusively for the rich, not a realizable goal for the everyday person. Unfortunately, the province’s reaction to this loss of a dream has been lame and halfbaked. The so-called Fair Housing Plan ushers in a Non-Residential Speculation Tax and the widening of rent control to all rental units. But where is the hope for first-time homebuyers in these markets and, indeed, in all of Canada? It’s fast becoming a situation where there is no place like home because there will be no home. Is this why our ancestors cleared the land and set up their homesteads – so that today’s young families would have no chance to have a home? It is a tragedy in the making and our political leaders seem to have no idea how to save the family home.

Not impressed Trash in local parks with downtown upsets concerned resident parking To the editor:

To the editor:

I would just like to say I am not impressed with what they have done with the downtown. I am sure they paid thousands for consultants but none of them had a measuring tape. Why would you have parking spaces where you have to rip the sidewalls off your tires to park. When you do get parked you may lose your door or mirrors trying to get out. I suppose the next addition will be bike lanes on the little bit of space left for those who drive. Terry Cunningham

Here are photos of recent trashing in Arnprior’s green spaces; in this instance the Galilee forest adjacent to Robert Simpson Park’s parking lot. It is so easy to wheel up to the fence at the parking lot and heave trash bags over the fence surrounding the parking lot. Nice way to say thanks to the Galilee management, which opens to all the public its walking trails, waterfront and public gardens. Volunteers end up cleaning this mess. On top of this, the Galilee Nature Conservancy joined lands – outside the Arnprior District High

School track fence, get treated to large scatterings of garbage from the student bush parties and lunch breaks, wherein beer cans, cigarette butts and assorted other discards pile up throughout the school year. If only a few parents would pay surprise visits to these parties, they would learn what their youngsters really do away from school. Maybe some parents would volunteer to help clean up. It is amazing that people still insist on fouling planet Earth any way they can – garbage, air pollution and so on, leaving this filthy legacy to their offspring. Evelyn Lyon

long-standing relationships we have with our quality vendors and manufacturers such as Nu-Tech … You are part of something very important. This is Canada’s largest clean energy project and arguably Canada’s largest infrastructure project. Together with Darlington’s additional 30 years of operation, Ontario’s gross domestic product will be boosted by approximately $89 billion and create an average of 14,200 new jobs over the same period.” Nu-Tech is one of hundreds of companies from across Ontario directly involved in the refurbishment project. “With approximately 96 per cent of the project’s suppliers based in our province, this is a truly made-in-Ontario story,” said Brown. Pressure tubes, made of zirconium, are six

metres long with a diameter of 11 cm. They house the fuel bundles which contain natural uranium, the fuel for CANDU reactors. “Our continued partnership with suppliers such as Nu-Tech reinforces the entire nuclear industry’s commitment to delivering Canada’s largest clean energy project ontime and on-budget,” said John M. Beck, president and chief executive officer, Aecon Group Inc., on behalf of the Joint Venture in the release. “We look forward to working on the next phase of this essential program.” Nu-Tech Precision Metals is a major manufacturer of seamless titanium pipe and tube in North America and produces standard and non-standard pipe sizes in many different metals and alloys.

Mayor Reid congratulates new women’s service group Continued from page 1

Mayor David Reid was a guest at the first meeting, May 1, at the public library. Another service group to join the almost 200 in the town of about 8,100 is more than welcome, he said. “I think it is wonderful,” Reid said. “Any time you have different organizations in the community helping out – it’s great.” Lorincz reiterated that the group helps youths and supports each other while having fun along the way. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it alone. I had a lot of support.”

WATER MAIN FLUSHING – ALMONTE WARD May 23 – June 23, 2017 The Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be flushing the water mains in all areas of Almonte Ward beginning Monday, May 23rd, 2017 to Friday, June 23rd, 2017, during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance 16 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, May 18, 2017

Ø

Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system.Ø Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometre’s away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water.

We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed and if you would like more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron, ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

Highlanders club brings baseball back to Arnprior Peewee team marks return with first pitch on Saturday The boys of summer are back. Three local baseball teams are now up and running in Arnprior. The Little Highlanders for kids ages 4-7 are participating in an introduction to baseball program, boys ages 13-15 are participating in the Upper Ottawa Valley Junior League and the

Arnprior Highlanders Peewee Competitive team has joined the newly formed NCOBA (National Capital Ontario Baseball Association). The Peewee Highlanders have a very busy start of the season ahead of them and have been training hard indoors and out over the last two months in preparation for AA league play.

The club sees their first action against the Kanata Axemen at their home diamond (AABA #1) on May 16 followed by a double header this coming Sunday, May 21 versus Gatineau Red. This game will officially mark the return of baseball in Arnprior and to honour this the Club is holding opening ceremonies prior to the game with a special guest throwing out the first pitch at 1 p.m. The back end of the double header runs at 3 p.m. The club would greatly appreciate local fan support for the games that feature the highest level of baseball competition in the Ottawa/

Gatineau region. The action is not limited just to the field, the club is bringing critically acclaimed rockers Hair Force One - 80’s tribute band back to town as a fundraiser to offset start up costs. The boys played to a packed house at the Nick Smith Centre back in January and the club anticipates another good crowd with the venue moving to the Curling Club for the show on Saturday, June 3. Tickets can be purchased at Valley Roots, through team members or online at Eventbrite (information at arnpriorhighlanders.com).

Continued excellence for Bluefish swimmers JEREMIAH GILLETT

The busy and successful 2016-2017 season continues for the Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club (ABSC) at the Nick Smith Centre. Positive results at three recent meets have shown that the hard work of the swimmers and the guidance of their coaches is paying off. in mid-January the team travelled to Perth for the Mike Brown Invitational. This three-day event included races in length up to the 1,500m freestyle. The Bluefish had 25 swimmers attend, the largest number for any meet in 10 years. The Bluefish swimmers achieved 93 personal best times over the three days, with 20 swims resulting in regional qualifying times. Among the team highlights Abby Harrod dropped a full 54 seconds off her previous personal best, resulting in an 11:56 time for the 800m freestyle (FS). Alex Rowe finished with an outstanding 19:52 in the 1,500m freestyle. And in six events Clayton Williamson dropped a full 75 seconds off his personal bests. From this meet, four Bluefish swimmers qualified for the 2017 Eastern Regional Championships. Held Feb. 3 to 5 in Belleville, the 2017 Eastern Ontario Short Course Regional Championships introduced a much more challenging qualifying standard. Each of the four Bluefish who quali-

fied, had to do so in at least three events in order to attend. More than 500 of the fastest swimmers from 19 teams across Eastern Ontario were in attendance. Bluefish team highlights included: Jordan Schaepper, age 9, qualified and swam in seven events and achieved five personal best times, including a 16-second improvement in both 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley (IM). Hadleigh Williamson, age 12, like Jordan, in her first regional championship swam in seven events and had three personal best times and two events within one second of her best time, as well as a very admirable eighth-place finish in Breast stroke. A great accomplishment for her first regional. Alex Wroe, age 13, swimming in his fourth consecutive regional swam in seven events. The format for swimmers age 13 and older is like the Olympics; each swim a preliminary race and the Top 16 swimmers then compete again the same evening, with the exception being the longer events (over 400m) which are only swum once. Alex qualified for three finals and was an alternate for two, improving his personal best time in every event. Cameron Shepherd, age 15, also qualified for his fourth consecutive regional championship but was unable to compete as he was away on a student exchange. See SWIMMERS, page 18

Swimmers score 40 best times Continued from page 17

Later in February, the team travelled to the Brewer Pool in Ottawa to take part in the Swim to The Beat SWOTT meet. With 21 swimmers from the Bluefish in attendance, they raced in 60 swims. Another very successful day, cheered on by family and teammates, and a DJ pumping dance music, the swimmers had 40 personal best times. As well, the Bluefish had 34 podium finishes: 13 first place, nine second-place and 12 thirdplace finishes. The highlight swim of the meet was Hadleigh Williamson who swam the 200m freestyle in 2:50.49 which was 52 seconds faster than her time in the same event one year earlier. With one short rest over March break, the training continued, again paying off with great result at the recent Ontario Youth Olympians, Long Course Swim Meet at the Nepean Sports Complex, held April 9. This was the one and only Long Course Swim Meet of the year, 50-metre pool, other than Long Course Regionals; the longer pool is much more challenging than competing in the shorter 25-metre pools. Of the 17 Bluefish swimmers, eight were in their first long-course competition. Out of 99 total swims, Bluefish achieved 55 personal best times. We had five swimmers that posted five out of

six personal best times. They included; Hannah Gillett, Liam Gillett, Ava Hammond, Trinity Kaerbye and Tate McIntyre. There are currently four Bluefish swimmers, Anna McMaster, Jordan Schaepper, Alex Wroe and Cameron Shepherd, who have qualified to compete at the upcoming Long Course Regional Championships to be held at the Nepean Sportsplex June 2 to 4. There are also three swimmers that are within striking distance of qualifying and have one last chance at Deep River Blackfly May 13 and 14. Training will be put to the test at the upcoming Blackfly Swim. But the real challenge will be May 15, 16 and 17 when the swimmers will complete the 2017 Swim-a-thon. This event, held annually by swim clubs across Canada raises funds to keep local teams and the Swim Canada program going and developing young athletes. This year the 60 Arnprior Bluefish Swimmers will each be attempting to Swim five kilometres in two hours. To support this great team and the opportunities for these and future swimmers, visit ontarioswimathon.ca/absc. To minimize the risk of fire and burn injuries, the Arnprior Fire Department is urging residents to include fire safety in their weekend plans. “Fire safety is not just for homes, it’s for cottages, cabins and seasonal homes too,” says Fire prevention/protection officer Cory Nicholas. “Consider purchasing new smoke alarms and batteries in case they need replacing and remember to install carbon monoxide alarms if your cottage is equipped with a fuel burning appliance, fireplace or storage garage.” To minimize the risk of fire and burn injury, the fire service recommends the following tips: • Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas and install carbon monoxide alarms in your cottage if it has a fuelburning appliance fireplace or attached garage. It’s the law. • Test alarms at least monthly or each time you return to the cottage. Pack new alarms and alarm batteries in case they need replacement. • Develop and practice a fire escape plan to ensure everyone knows what to do if smoke or CO alarms sound. • Know the telephone number for the local fire department and your cottage’s emergency

Valley Rent Rite Ltd.

sign number, in case of emergency. • Clean barbecues before using them. Keep an eye on lit barbecues and ensure all combustibles, as well as children and pets are kept well away from them. Fires can happen when barbecues are left unattended. • Keep barbecue lighters and matches out of sight and reach of children. • Bring a flashlight with extra batteries. • Check heating appliances and chimneys before using them. • Check with the fire department, municipality, or Ministry of Natural Resources to determine whether open air burning is permitted and what rules apply before having a campfire or burning brush. If open burning is allowed, fires should be built on bare soil or on exposed rock. Remove leaves and twigs from around the fire. Always keep a bucket of water, sand, or even a shovel close by and supervise the fire at all times. • If you must smoke, do so outside. Keep a large can with water nearby so cigarette butts can be safely discarded. • If you drink, do so responsibly. Tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption are contributing factors in many fires and can lead to serious injuries.

Arnprior Rotary honours two volunteers at 30th anniversary gala DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The Rotary Club celebrated 30 years in Arnprior by recognizing local community contributors. The gala night, held at Sand Point Golf Course on April 27, saw about 110 Rotarians and guests from across Renfrew County. The evening began with a cake-cutting that included Mayor David Reid, who expressed the important role Rotary, the world’s largest service organization, plays in communities. “I thank each and every one of you for all the work you do,” Reid said. “We couldn’t run a small town without you.” He then declared May 23, 2017 as Rotary Day in Arnprior. Rotary district governor Nabil Oudeh talked

about his early impressions of the group as a lad in India. To him, it was a place for local elites: doctors, lawyers, and the like. So, to grow up and become a high-level member is something of a surprise. Rotary is for those who want to serve others full stop, he indicated. Oudeh’s day job is that of founder and president of the Centre for Conflict Resolution. An accomplished author and workplace transformation coach, he was lured to Rotary because of shared values. “I go around the world and help people not kill each other. That’s basically my job,” Oudeh said. “Rotary is all about service: service to community, the larger community, and around the world.” Rev. Leo Hughes introduced the first recipient of the Paul Harris Award by saying Glenn Arthur has

touched thousands of lives over his 35 years in Arnprior. As town recreation director responsible for sports and festivals, residents of all ages have benefited from Arthur’s contributions, he said. “He has lived out the Rotary motto ‘service over self,’” Hughes said. “He is a living example of the Rotary Club.” Up next was Vicki Murdoch, who has contributed countless volunteer hours over an 18-year period to Special Olympics. A coach, she shared a moment with Reid, who had also coached Special Olympics. Her son Gregory and his daughter Lauren, both successful athletes, were at the dinner clapping enthusiastically for their parents. “We live and breathe and eat Special Olympics at our house,” Murdoch said. “Besides the physical benefits and friends and travel and all that, they Photos by Derek Dunn/Metroland love the hardware.” Glenn Arthur is recognized by Rotary for his many years of volunteer Paralympic snowboarder John Leswork. Joining him at the gala evening in Sand Point are rotarians Nabil lie’s mother, Carol Anne, provided an update on the hardworking athlete. Oudeh and Jane Peters.

Everywhere he travels in the world, he wears his Arnprior pride for all to see, she said. War Amps speaker James Jordan also shared insights on the contribution Rotary makes to his organization. A 50/50 draw — which Rotary

matched — saw $750 go to War Amps that night. Begun by veterans of the First World War, the non-profit runs the popular key tag return program. People with missing limbs across the country have benefited from prosthetics paid for by War Amps.

LETTS, Don (Donnie) – In loving memory of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who left us way too soon one year ago May 17. Eternal joy and memories stay in our hearts forever, Our lives go on without you but nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches when someone speaks your name, Silent the tears that flow, Living our lives without you, is the hardest part of all. You were caring, courageous, funny, A larger than life character. The special years will not return when we were all together, But with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. On angels wings you were taken but, In our hearts you will stay. Til we meet again, RIP Love always, Sheila and Family

Honesty and Integrity ~ Professionalism ~ Client Service Orientation ~ Focus on Results

My sister Audrey was in an unusual talking mood that Saturday morning. There would be no visiting with her friend Iva. Aunt Bertha, Iva’s mother, was into the spring housecleaning, and every hand was needed. We were sitting in the grape arbour, yet to sprout its leaves, swinging in the twoseater, and I thought it was a good time to ask Audrey something that had been on my mind since the nicer 375 Daniel St. S Arnprior weather came around. There was something unusual to me about the date, the 24th of May. It seemed to me, that was almost a magical day, because so much depended on THIS WEEK’S it. My thinking aboutFEATURE it started the Sunday before when we were scarcely Jack & Faith’s into the beginning of the month, and I came downstairs ready for church, and wearing my new white gloves. Mother had bought them at the five and dime store for 19 cents a pair, which to me was a princely price to pay, but I had outgrown the hand-me-down ones Audrey had worn before me. As soon as mother saw them on me, she said I would have to take them off, because you couldn’t wear white gloves until after the 24th of May. That was news to me, but when I asked mother why, she said ‘just because,’ which was supposed to satisfy me, but didn’t. And even though it was as hot as blazes out, mother came out of the 39 WINNERS CIRCLE, bedroom in her felt hat with the clusARNPRIOR ter of cherries on the crown. I thought it was high time she put on the straw hat with the satin ribbon on it that Aunt Lilly had brought her from Ottawa, but according to my sister Audrey, you just couldn’t wear a summer hat until after the 24th of May. Well, there it was again, that 24th of May business. Father said an early spring meant an early summer, and he was right, because even though it was May, it Pharmacist here was asYour hotRexall as blazes, and ismother was keep your heart healthy already to pulling the blinds in the Visit Rexall throughout the month ofdown May learn about heart health house after to breakfast, and keeping

everything locked up tight during the day. And that meant UP % the Bonnechere SAVE 30 River was TO warmed up too. Of course, ASSORTED RUSTIC MELAMINE my three brothers were dying to have REG. 3.49 TO 4.99 DINNERWARE TO school, aFROM dip2 44 after and on Saturdays 374Each Each after chores. But mother said there would be no swimming in the Bonnechere until after the 24th of May! And it didn’t matter how hot it got! Well, this was all very confusing to me. The payoff came when mother’s little wood boxes of flowers had sprouted and to me, looked like they were ready to blossom, and I was sure 290 DANIEL ST. S., she would be out planting them in the ARNPRIOR beds father had gotten ready. Well, there it was again: there would be no planting of flowers until after the 24th THIS of May! WEEK’S FEATURE And so that Saturday sitting in the PROUDLY CANADIAN swing with my sister Audrey, I asked her again, what was so special about the 24th of May, when, it seemed to me, the entire world revolved around that day. Audrey pursed her lips and went deep into thought. She said she was pretty sure it had to do with the old woman in Renfrew who told fortunes. She said she thought she had put a curse on the day. I asked her what a curse had to do with wearing white gloves, a straw hat, or swimming in the Bonnechere, and how she could possibly send a curse all the way out to Northcote. My sister Audrey thought for the longest minute, and then said that some things just couldn’t be explained, and for our own good we’d 236 MADAWASKA better accept them,BLVD., or weARNPRIOR could get into serious trouble. With no money, the Depression all around us, depending on a rich aunt from Regina for the very clothes on our backs, and many other things beyond our control, I figured I would just have to accept Audrey’s explanation because more trouble was something we didn’t need. After all, wasn’t she in Senior Fourth and the smartest girl at the Northcote School? And if anyone knew the answer to the mystery of the 24th of May, it would be my sister Audrey. 11” Dinner Plate Blue or stripe design. 4219-253/254#

He stressed that it is important to listen not only to your partner, but to listen to your opponents as well. Their bids should provide very good clues as to the strength of .COM their hands and the cards they are likely to hold. On this day, the cards seemed to be very evenly distributed and only on Board #25 were any slam contracts even attempted. On that board, though there were five slams bid,

Twenty-fourth of May held many the mystery for young Mary My sister Audrey was in an unusual talking mood that Saturday morning. There would be no visiting with her friend Iva. Aunt Bertha, Iva’s mother, was into the spring housecleaning, and every hand was needed. We were sitting in the grape arbour, yet to sprout its leaves, swinging in the twoseater, and I thought it was a good time to ask Audrey something that had been on my mind since the nicer weather came around. There was something unusual to me about the date, the 24th of May. It seemed to me, that was almost a magical day, because so much depended on it. My thinking about it started the Sunday before when we were scarcely

into the beginning of the month, and I came downstairs ready for church, and wearing my new white gloves. And even though it was as hot as blazes out, mother came out of the

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

bedroom in her felt hat with the cluster of cherries on the crown. I thought it was high time she put on the straw hat with the satin ribbon on it that Aunt Lilly had brought her from Ottawa, but according to my sister Audrey, you just couldn’t wear a summer hat until after the 24th of May. Well,

there it was again, that 24th of May business. Father said an early spring meant an early summer, and he was right, because even though it was May, it was as hot as blazes, and mother was already pulling the blinds down in the house after breakfast, and keeping everything locked up tight during the day. And that meant the Bonnechere River was warmed up too. Of course, my three brothers were dying to have a dip after school, and on Saturdays after chores. But mother said there would be no swimming in the Bonnechere until after the 24th of May! And it didn’t matter how hot it got! Well, this was all very confusing to me. The payoff came when mother’s little wood boxes of flowers had sprouted and to me, looked like they were ready to blossom, and I was sure she would be out planting them in the beds father had gotten ready. Well, there it was again: there would be no planting of flowers until after the 24th of May! And so that Saturday sitting in the swing with my sister Audrey, I asked her again, what was so special about the 24th of May, when, it seemed to me, the entire world revolved around that day. Audrey pursed her lips and went

deep into thought. My sister Audrey thought for the longest minute, and then said that some things just couldn’t be explained, and for our own good we’d better accept them, or we could get into serious trouble. And if anyone knew the answer to the mystery of the 24th of May, it would be my sister Audrey. sudoku

Barsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Mistakes are a key to learning, Capricorn. Don’t let minor hiccups derail you from the larger plan. Otherwise, your momentum may get seriously stalled.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, think about reconnecting with an old flame. Even if the connection is purely platonic, the stroll down Memory Lane might be good for you.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, weigh all of your options before making a major commitment. Once you move forward, you may not have much room to turn things around.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Confidence is the key to just about anything, Aquarius. This week you have it in abundance. At this point, you can probably sell ice to eskimos, so put your luck to good use.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, this week may be a turning point for you in your life. Although you feel ready for the changes that are in store, you may have to adapt a bit more once they’re here.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, someone is trying to tell you something but you may not be receiving the message just yet. Settle in and the message may dawn on you at a later time.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 A career move may be imminent and it could be worrying you, Pisces. After the first few days, things will be smooth sailing.
