Arnprior waterfront could see many upgrades Larger beach, new restaurant and cultural centre among ideas Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Arnprior could have a beach to rival Burnstown in the future, according to a planning document discussed at a recent town committee meeting. The waterfront feasibility report tabled at the May 15 community development advisory committee meeting contains a number of suggestions. The draft plan recommendations — based on survey results and public consultations — include: • Removal of the riverside parking lot and extending the Robert Simpson beach across it; • Reinstate the breakwater to slow beach erosion; • Build a cultural/retail/restaurant facility near an improved marina; • Install asphalt pathways throughout waterfront area; • Extend pathway under Madawaska Bridge and add lighting to various areas; • Improve the bridge sidewalk; • Create a stone-slab amphitheatre on the Hydro Park slope between East Side Mario’s and the river; • Clean up Bell Park and add pathways. Several more suggestions are in the document, which would cost millions of dollars to see through. Robert Simpson Park’s total is
$1.06 million; the marina’s $2.2 million; pathways $1.34 million; Bell Park $91,000. A few consultants on hand and the town planner called it an ambitious report that can be accomplished in phases over a number of years. Town planner Robin Paquette was even loath to say it is set in stone. “It is more an overarching or guiding document than a plan,” Paquette said. The community would be consulted along the way and engineering challenges would be overcome before work begins. Committee chair Lynn Grinstead doubted the durability of using asphalt on a section of pathway near the docks. It is covered by water every spring. She was told that area would likely be raised. Coun. Tom Burnette was wary of expanding the beach, saying big rocks would have to come out. The breakwater will also need maintenance, so some discussion took place over simply replacing sand every year instead. In the audience was Mayor David Reid who steered the conversation away from details, saying the report is “very conceptual” but contains several good ideas, including keeping Bell Park passive with some cleanup. He shot down the recommendation to build a new harbour master facility with showers and washrooms. He doesn’t believe enough users will cover the costs. He also opposes locating the multi-use facility with a restaurant at Robert Simpson Park. No one at the meeting defended either. Reid’s main point was to have one multi-use facility in the area, located at the small grove between the docks and existing boat launch. Other ideas included in the report are for a number of fishing docks along the pathway; clear signage outlining the various pathways;
paint on sidewalks between Hydro Park and Bell Park; trees to hide the sewage facility; linkage reestablished between Robert Simpson Park and Gillies Grove; winter access to pathways; pathway around and throughout Robert Simpson
with a section for picnic tables; and accessible pathway to beach. Committee suggestions will be included in the next draft of the report which will come before council in the near future.

Canadian Red Cross announces $4 million to help those affected by spring floods Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Help is on its way for those trying to recover from recent historic floods in Renfrew County. On May 18 the Canadian Red Cross announced $4 million of direct financial assistance to help those who have been hit hardest by the recent flooding in Ontario and Quebec. An appeal went out in early May and close to $7 million was raised. Quebec will receive $3 million for the more than 5,200 households affected and close to $1 million for about 1,600 households in Ontario, over half the funds raised to date. “It is for anybody in flood impacted areas,” said Tanya Elliott, Red Cross vice president of Ontario. “It’s intended to help people with their immediate needs as people get back into their homes and assess the damage.” Eligible registered households will receive $600 to help purchase what they urgently need during this very difficult time. The funds are only for primary residences and apply to one person per household. “It empowers them to make their own decision on what their families need,” said Elliott. “It helps them ad-
dress their immediate needs in this extremely traumatic transition. We hope that it provides a measure of support during this difficult time.” The money is thanks to the generous support of Canadians across the country. “Canadians come together time and again and its thanks to those Canadians we are able to provide this assistance,” said Elliott. Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury says any money that the Red Cross can donate to anyone in the floodaffected area is good news. “The residents need to take advantage of this,” said Kingsbury. “I encourage residents to apply because every little bit helps.” However, he notes that residents should be careful as to what they apply it toward as to not duplicate their Disaster Recovery Assistance program applications. Kingsbury also wished it applied to cottages. “I feel sorry for those with secondary residents,” said Kingsbury. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett said the help they have received overall has been unbelievable. “It was just amazing to see the outpouring, it was very heart warming,”
said Peckett. As to the $600 from the Red Cross: “It’s a start,” said Peckett. “If someone’s fridge was taken out, it won’t cover it, but it’s a good start.” He was very thankful to those who supported the Red Cross campaign. “It’s the typical Canadian way, when people are in need, they dig deep to help each other out,” said Peckett. Households can register for Canadian Red Cross assistance online at redcross.ca/gethelp, or by phone at 1-800-863-6582. Flood-impacted households who have already registered with the Red Cross are required to re-register as additional information is required for this assistance. Households who have not yet registered with Red Cross are still eligible for assistance now and in the future upon registration. The fastest and most effective way to get this help is to submit an email address during registration so that financial support can be channelled electronically. All households who register with the Canadian Red Cross for assistance and whose primary residence is verified within a recognized flood-impacted area are eligible, whether they evacuated or stayed in their homes.
ARH receives funding from provincial budget Eastern Ontario Hospitals will receive a $2.5-million boost from the recent provincial budget. This funding is to provide faster access to health care, expand crucial services and procedures, and improve the experience of patients. This investment in these hospitals is part of a 3.1 per cent increase in hospital funding proposed in the 2017 budget to directly benefit patients at every public hospital across Ontario, and would: * Provide more access to cardiac services, critical care, organ/tissue donations and transplants, rare disease care, and bariatric services, as well as support for new and redeveloped hospital; * Improve access and reduce wait times for chemotherapy, stroke treatments, hip and knee replacements, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs); * Support service delivery by hospitals in high-growth communities, as well as small, medium, northern and rural hospitals, and mental health and standalone pediatric hospitals. Ontario aims to increase access to care, reduce wait times and improve the patient experience through its Patients First Action Plan for Health
Care and OHIP-plus: Children and Youth Pharmacare — protecting health care today and into the future. “This new funding will help create a stronger health system by increasing access to important hospital services. Through these additional investments, people will receive more effective and efficient care in a health system that is becoming more and more integrated and accountable,” said Chantale LeClerc, CEO, Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) The funding boost for Arnprior Regional Health is welcome relief after several years of hospital funding increases that have not kept pace with the incremental costs incurred by the hospital, noted president and CEO Eric Hanna. Arnprior Regional Health, which also operates the Grove Nursing Home, noted incremental operating funding will also be provided to the nursing home. “These funding increases, coupled with the completion of strategic priorities such as a redeveloped and increased size of the nursing home, will allow ARH to achieve its vision of ‘together we will create a healthy community,’” concluded Hanna.

Reeve opposes new French school Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
An Arnprior council member was anxious to air his opposition to a proposed new French school that will be discussed at a public meeting in June. Reeve Walter Stack likened Ontario’s multiple school board system to the forced separation of blacks and whites in the United States. He won’t vote in favour of the new school and called for a recorded vote — meaning every member’s choice is documented in meeting minutes — at the May 8 regular meeting of council. “I don’t know when the ratepayers will put pressure on the province to do away with four school systems,” Stack said. “I thought segregation was dealt with in the south in the 1950s.” He spoke following a town planner report recommending council accept a zoning change on the property — west of Baskin Drive across from A.J. Charbonneau Public School — from residential to community facility. That Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre Est owns the land isn’t an issue for Stack, he said. Schools are shutting down everywhere so building makes little sense to him. The student population is shrinking. More driving pollutes the air. Paying for multiple administrations is onerous on the taxpayer, he indicated. “I have a real frustration with this and won’t support it.”
The school would be a two-storey elementary with a day nursery in Phase 1. A future expansion would include a secondary school. Several portables are included in the design plan. Underground services, playground and recreational facilities such as a soccer field would also be included, along with 87 parking spaces. The parking occupied some discussion time at the meeting. According to town rules, only 74 spaces are required for this project. But the town doesn’t follow the same formula as many other municipalities, explained planner Robin Paquette. Others go by classroom size, Arnprior goes by gym size; the latter allows for fewer spaces. Mayor David Reid and others are concerned with the school not having enough parking. It has a significant catchment area with many students to be driven in from outside Arnprior. He is OK with accepting the board’s request, but wants to know it has a backup plan if more spaces are needed. He points to A.J. as not having enough spaces as it is. Cars are often parked in the side of Baskin Drive, posing a safety risk. Paquette said the two boards would work together to not hold events (such as Christmas concerts that attract many parents) at the same time. That way they can share parking lots. The zoning change won enough votes at the council table. The public meeting is likely to take place June 12.
Market Vendors Wanted The Town of Arnprior is seeking vendors for a new weekly Downtown Market. Knights of Columbus substance abuse awareness poster contest Arnprior Knights of Columbus
The winners of the annual Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Poster competition were announced lately at a local school. Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2082 District 44 representative Wayne Pickering, Substance Abuse Poster Contest Chairman Darcy Fridgen and the Arnprior Council 2082 Grand Knight Blaine Mullins visited the winning students to present them with their certificates and other winning items. The Substance Abuse Poster Contest encourages all students of the 8-11 and 12-14 age groups to develop an original poster and slogan in the drug and alcohol abuse categories to discourage their peers from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Each year there are four possible winners with one winner chosen from each category of 8-11 alcohol, 12-14 alcohol, 8-11 drug and 12-14 drug abuse. Each participant that enters receives a Knights of Columbus certificate for their participation. Winners receive a Knights of Columbus Winners certificate, a $50 monetary reward, and if the posters are picked
to go beyond the local area, winners also receive other awards. Darcy Fridgen, the Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2028 Chairman and the Diocese of Pembroke Substance Abuse Poster Contest Chairman, says, “it’s these students who make the substance abuse program so successful each and every year. “It makes a huge difference to see the kids involved in these contests. “It really brings home what the future effects of alcohol and drug abuse can possibly have on their friends and families, it’s all about awareness.” First place winners from Knights of Columbus Council 2082 here in Arnprior are Taryn McGregor, Emily Jones and Melanie Lalande of St. Joseph’s Catholic School. All three participants took home a $50 monetary award and certificate for their winnings at the first stage, which is the council, level. All three winners then moved on to the second level of the contest. In that level, all winning Knights of Columbus Council participants from areas throughout the Ottawa Valley, have their posters submitted to their

respective districts. Within the Pembroke Diocese, there are two districts - District 02 and District 44. At this point of the competition, the District Deputy of District 44’s geographical region has the posters judged. Taryn, Emily and Melanie all took home winning substance abuse medallions for their winning of this level. Melanie Lalande went on to the third level of competition to which all winners from the Knights of Columbus District participants are put together with the other district winners from within the Diocese of Pembroke. Poster winners from all Districts within the Pembroke Diocese are then judged. Melanie took home a Substance Abuse Poster Contest plaque for winning this level. Her poster has been submitted to the next, Ontario State, level of the contest. The Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2082 would like congratulate all the winners this year and thank the schools, their administration, the judges and all the participants that took part in this years contest. We hope to see you all again next year.

Museum. “Children still play with dolls and farm sets. Skating, tobogganing and playing hockey remain an integral part of Canadian winters.” The exhibit runs from Sept. 5 to Nov. 14 and will include a few artifacts from the museum’s permanent collection. The timing is meant to attract classes from area schools. That will keep the museum open at a time when it is normally closed, plus create revenue. It should prove of interest to tourists too, Carlile added. The federal Department of Canadian Heritage will fund it in full.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Relaying a change It’s that time of year again – hundreds of local high schoolers have been preparing for months to hit the track and do the rounds in support of a cause that touches just about everyone – fighting cancer. On Friday May, 26, Renfrew Collegiate Institute students host their Relay for Life event at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Then on Thursday, June 8, it’s Arnprior District High School’s turn. The event raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, a national, community-based organization of volunteers formed in 1938 whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. The society estimates two of five Canadians will develop cancer during their lifetimes and one in four will die from the disease. By all accounts, it’s a fundraiser the students, their teachers, families and indeed the community, can get behind. It is estimated that in 2016: • 102,900 Canadian men were diagnosed with cancer and 41,700 men died from cancer. • 99,500 Canadian women were diagnosed with cancer and 37,100 women died from can-
cer. • On average, 555 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer every day. • On average, 216 Canadians died from cancer every day. Almost no one remains untouched from the disease. The first relay in Canada was held in 1999 and raised $85,000. Together, we have come a long way. In total, it has raised over $500 million for the society, funds are used to support Canada’s most promising cancer research and vital support services for people with cancer and their families. With your help, the Society has been able to impact many lives. Relay for Life not only raises much-needed funds for cancer care and research, it evokes a sense of empowerment and accomplishment in the face of a disease that can so often leave patients and their families with a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness. It also fosters togetherness, teaches organization and planning, and in the end offers an opportunity for participants to honour their loved ones and have one heck of a lot of a fun in the process. The words of the society sum it up nicely: Cancer changes everything, so can you.

I would like to respond to your article ‘Government, citizens should get used to Ottawa River Flooding.’ Do you think that the people who live on it and use the Ottawa River sit around as it flows by and not know what it is capable of or what it does? Let me tell you as a valley girl, cottage user and occasional boater of this great river I know all about it having lived near and on it all my life I don’t need someone telling me to “get used to it,” I am used to it and so are most of the people who live near it. As a cottager I am well aware of the flood/ high water that takes place every year from spring thaw, that the town and city residents may not be aware of. What concerns me is that we already had our spring flood two weeks prior (would you like to
see pictures, roads were flooded then too). As far as I know, snow only melts once. Yes, the northern waters might thaw at a later time but that responsibility lays with hydro and the government to control or forecast the flow and amount of water that the many dams that are found in this Great Valley might expect. Would that not include forecasted rainfall? I would like to point out several years back (roughly 10-12) we had a weather alert for a rain blitz. Roads, train tracks, homes were damaged but not one cottage was flooded, if I’m not mistaken it happened around this time of year. When I hear “get used to it” I interpret that as someone not really understanding the full picture, and that as a lifelong resident and cottager I am fully aware of it and used to it.

I am sick to death of receiving junk mail disguised as official Government of Canada correspondence. I’m sure everyone knows what I mean: a standard sized brown envelope with a red maple leaf in the corner. It happened again this week, right around the same time many of us were checking our mailboxes for notices from the Canada Revenue Agency regarding our tax returns. An entirely random accident of timing, no doubt. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this kind of thing is skeevy as all get out. At least the email come-ons from Nigerian princes offering me a cut of millions in ill-gotten gains are refreshingly over the top in their absurdity and illegality. But this has an entirely unwarranted veneer of legitimacy. Well, it may not be illegal, but it sure as hell is not legitimate. This

is flim flammery of the lowest order. If anyone is seriously considering buying from these hucksters, I beg you to reconsider. If they had anything of genuine value to offer, would they have to disguise it and trick you in the first place? Please just throw the junk out, or better yet, fill the convenient postage prepaid return envelope with something exceedingly heavy (your used AA batteries will fit nicely in the envelope) and drop them a note letting them know how much you appreciate their duplicity. There is a special place in hell reserved for these bottom feeders, though they may have to share space with the people that develop cell phone plans. P.S. I am not a crank.

Linda Colosimone retires after over 46 Tim Hortons Camp Day May years as a hairdresser and barber John Curry John.Curry@metroland.com
Linda Colosimone has been a licensed professional hairdresser and barber for over 46 years. Remarkable. She has operated her own shop, Linda’s HairWorks at 5051 Highway 17 E. between Galetta Sideroad and Arnprior for 26 years. Awesome. And now she has retired after serving a host of loyal and appreciative clients. Amazing. But what is even more remarkable, awesome and amazing is the fact that Linda has accomplished all of this despite being profoundly deaf since she was four months old. Communication with clients has never been an issue. Linda and her clients would write notes back and forth or clients would show Linda a picture from her collection of hairstyling magazines and samples, indicating what style or colour they wanted. In addition, her home-based shop benefits from a special light system that has been installed. A light flashes in several areas of the home including in her hairdressing shop in the basement when the doorbell rings (provided the doorbell is pressed five times as a notice on the door states) or when the phone rings (a different light pattern is activated than when the doorbell rings). This allowed Linda to run her shop alone

Linda Colosimone (right), who has retired after 46 years as a licensed professional hairdresser and barber with the last 26 years running her own shop Linda’s HairWorks at 5051 Highway 17E in West Carleton near Arnprior, gives her husband Rick a trim in her now-closed shop at her home. when her husband Rick was away at work. Linda became deaf when she was four months old and was dropped by her violent and alcoholic young father. A fever from the injuries that she suffered from this resulted in her loss of hearing. At a residential school for the deaf in Belleville, Linda excelled at hairdressing. In addition, her mother’s best friend, who was a hairdresser, helped to train her for the profession. She obtained her hairdressing license and established her own shop in Bel-
leville. It was then that she met her husband Rick who lived in Ottawa but was doing some work in Belleville in his job with the Canadian Hearing Society. Linda and Rick married, with Linda moving to Ottawa where she worked at different hairdressing shops. Then, in 1991, she opened her own shop Linda’s HairWorks in their recently built new home at 5051 Highway 17 E. in West Carleton, just outside Arnprior. She developed a clientele ranging from Ottawa and Kanata to West Carleton and Arnprior.

Catholic board appoints Perry education director The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Jaimie Perry as the new director of education beginning Sept. 15. “Jaimie Perry has extensive experience as a Catholic educator and leader,” says Dave Howard, RCCDSB chair. “The board is confident that his commitment to excellence and collaboration will ensure that we continue to provide schools to believe in.” Perry has served for the past 10 years as a superintendent of educational services. Over those years, special education, instructional staffing and labour management, safe schools, and K-12/student success have been among the many portfolios he has held. He replaces current director Michele Arbour, who will retire in September. “I have worked with Jaimie for the past 10 years and I am thrilled that he will be my successor,” said Arbour. “I know he has the experience and knowledge to effectively serve the board well in this role.” Perry began his teaching career with the RCCDSB in 1988, becoming vice-principal and department head at St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew in 1998, and then principal in 2001. He earned his master’s of education from the University of Ottawa. Perry has served as a presenter for the Principal’s Qualification Program, chair of the Eastern Ontario Catholic Curriculum Corporation from 2010 to 2016, and as a facilitator for the Eastern Ontario Staff Development Network
JAIMIE PERRY — Supervisory Officer’s Qualification Program from 2012 to 2016. Perry is actively involved in his parish, St. Francis Xavier, as a commentator/lector and on the parish pastoral council. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to lead and serve the board. “I am very pleased to take on the role of the next director of education for the board. I am looking forward to working with all of the board’s stakeholders and partners to continue building upon the RCCDSB’s tradition of academic excellence and commitment to student wellness and achievement in an environment that nurtures faith development,” says Perry.
CAO to be facilitator at conference Town of Arnprior
The Town of Arnprior is pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, the town’s chief administrative officer, Michael Wildman has been requested by the Association of Municipal Managers Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) to be a guest facilitator and Instructor at the 2017 Annual AMCTO Conference this coming June. Wildman will be facilitating a session for candidates who are seeking to acquire accreditation as a Certified Municipal Officer or CMO. This year, Michael was also invited by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to speak at the Ontario East Municipal Conference in September, however, due to another commitment Michael will be unable to attend. Three years ago, Wildman was appointed by the AMCTO board of directors to participate on a provincial task force with other municipal experts to make recommendations in
order to update the accreditation process for the Certified Municipal Officer program. Michael’s involvement in the CMO program continues today with Michael having been appointed by the AMCTO board of directors as a designated CMO application reviewer. The role of the CMO reviewer is to assess candidate submissions for CMO accreditation and make recommendations to the AMCTO Board of Directors. “The CMO designation is the gold standard in the municipal sector in terms of municipal accreditation which is distinguishably the leading credential in the municipal sector. It is a pleasure to provide some assistance to the association and my peers in this way,” said Wildman. With over 2,100 members working in municipalities across Ontario, AMCTO is Canada’s largest voluntary association of local government professionals, and the leading professional development organization for municipal administrative staff.
Valuable ring stolen from McNab/Braeside home On May 8, a valuable ring was stolen from a home on Ridgeview Drive in McNab/Braeside Township. BREAK AND ENTER A shed on Two Island Lake Road was broken into some time over the winter. It is not believed anything was stolen. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated 262 calls for service during the past week. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Tickets, warnings issued during vehicle inspections The Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police, in partnership with members of the OPP Highway Safety Division, Ministry of Transportation, Killaloe OPP detachment, and UOV OPP detachment conducted commercial motor vehicle safety inspections on May 10 in Renfrew County. Enforcement was strategically placed at collision hot spots along the Highway 17 corridor from Scheel Drive to
Goshen Road. As a result of the safety checks a total of 30 vehicles were checked and inspected. Police issued 33 Provincial Offences tickets and 27 warnings. There were 13 out of service defects and 1 plate removal offence, in addition to other offences. The highlight of this event was a fully loaded tractor-trailer unit hauling scrap metal.
An inspection revealed multiple major defects - most relating to the braking system and suspension. The plates were removed and it was deemed unfit. A tragedy was likely avoided by removing this unsafe vehicle from our roadways. A second safety check initiative is expected to be conducted in the near future in the Upper Ottawa Valley area.

OPP remind drivers to be alert in construction zones The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) are reminding motorists that construction season is here and that drivers need to be extra cautious. The MTO are reporting in excess of 200 construction projects underway around the province. These projects consist of highway expansions, bridge replacements and road maintenance, which may result in road closures, reduced lanes, lane realignments and reduced speed limits. Drivers should be prepared for possible delays in these areas and plan accordingly. Drivers should remain vigilant at all times, particularly in construction zones where inattention behind the wheel can lead to tragic consequences.
The OPP will be closely monitoring traffic in these areas and actively enforcing the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Drivers are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones where workers are present and that driver’s licence/vehicle seizure provisions apply for the offence of speeding under section 172 of the HTA. If you are traveling throughout Ontario, updated information on roads and construction projects can be obtained by calling 511, or by following the MTO on Twitter @511Ontario. These construction projects are for the benefit of all road users. Please do your part by driving safely so that every road construction worker makes it home every night.

Gospel Matters Band comes to White Lake Church May 28
Russ Corbett/submitted
Return visitors
The Gospel Matters Band is a collaboration of 75 plus years of combined musical experience of Lyoness and Judy Woodstock, Wilf Arsenault, Roger Heroux and occasionally Ed Bimm. Their musical influences include country, rock and roll, jazz, blues, swing and traditional church music. After many years of entertaining in the music industry, the desire to become more deeply involved in performing traditional and original country gospel, along with many hymn book favourites, inspired the members to launch the group. The brother and sister due of Lyoness and Judy, natives of Poltimore, Quebec spent 20 years entertaining country music crowds across Canada. Performing in front of live audiences, radio and television they enjoyed success with the release of several recordings on the SNOCAN label.
Their time in the music industry resulted in nominations in the Canadian Country Music Awards in the best new artist and best new duo/group categories. They continued to perform regularly into the mid 1980s. After a short hiatus to focus on family and careers outside music, they became involved to a greater extent in writing and performing gospel music in church. This was the catalyst for a CD of Lyoness self-penned inspirational music currently in production and the motivation to create a gospel music group. Your chance to hear this well versed band is a church fundraiser at the White Lake United Church on Sunday, May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance or at the door. For ticket information contact Wendy Jonkman 613-623-6305 or Roberta Thompson 613-623-4822.
This mating pair of osprey, photographed in April, had recently arrived from the south, returning to this nesting site atop a light standard in Arnprior for several years. Reader Russ Corbett witnessed these ‘fish hawks’ breaking dead branches off of trees in a nearby forest to replenish their nest.

Local dentist Dr. Shahriar Jalali recently joined the Rotary Club of Arnprior and is looking for a way to give back to the community. Due to economic reasons, some community members are challenged with keeping up with dental care. Arnprior Tooth Doctor, located at the Arnprior Medical Centre/Hospital, is pleased to offer patient examinations and teeth cleaning on the last Wednesday of the month, in return for a donation to the Arnprior Rotary Club for what can be afforded. To schedule an appointment, please call the office at 613-623-3313. The Rotary Club of Arnprior is a Community Service Club involved in many projects in the Arnprior area and in communities around the world. For more information, visit www.rotary.org.
Sherlock hits Renfrew stage May 30, 31, June 2 and 3 Huckin’ In the Valley May 27, 28 Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
It’s elementary, dear readers. You must witness the great detective solve his latest mystery. The dedicated arts students of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) at 835 First St. in Renfrew are hitting the stage with Sherlock Holmes May 30, 31 and June 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 to see this fine detective in action with his motley crew of characters. The local high school production includes students from both the Renfrew and Arnprior areas and they encourage everyone to come and take in the show. Braeside’s J.P. Cassanto, in his fifth year and his fifth production at SJHS, is taking on the lead role of Sherlock himself. “Sherlock has a lot in his character, he is such an intelligent guy and even 10 lines ahead I have to prepare for what’s to come,” said Cassanto. “It’s your classic Sherlock mystery, but we have put our own spin on it to make it that much more intriguing.” He describes the cast as young and said it was a learning experience for some. “Myself and some of the older cast members, we have been able to teach them a lot,” said Cassanto. “It’s a fitting way to end my St. Joe’s career.” This is Arnprior’s Emily Cherney’s fourth production at SJHS and she portrays Alice, Sherlock’s love interest. Cherney thinks it is a really interesting take on Sherlock Holmes. “She has these letters that everyone seems to want … I don’t want to give too much away,” she said sly with a smile on her face. “It’s my kind of play, I like mysteries and it is a lot of fun.” Arnprior’s Thomas Cherney is also in his second high school production as Dr. John Watson.

The third installment of Huckin’ In the Valley is soaring into the Arnprior Radio Control Club May 27 and 28. The giant scale radio control event is now Canada’s largest 3-D airplane event, which attracts some of the top radio control pilots in the country. There will be 40 plus pilots visiting from all over the region but also Quebec and Southern Ontario. This event is certainly visually stunning, with beautiful giant models and incredible gravity defying aerobatics. The attraction to the club is the large 800 foot secluded grass runway, light towers for night flying and of course the 3-D meat trifecta meal that is put on Saturday evening. Spectators are welcome. Concessions are available with a barbecue lunch and deep fried turkey, beef brisket and pulled pork dinner, which can be purchased by spectators and guests. The club can be found at 5556 Logger’s Way, Arnprior or visiting www.arnpriorradiocontrolclub.com for more information visit the event website: www.huckininthevalley.

me on arrival. That night conditions changed dramatically; it rained and by dawn the temperature dropped to 3 °C. The next morning my good friend Rory MacKay and I travelled up the Arowhon Pines Road to look for birds, hoping there might be a fallout from the previous night. To our disappointment, the road was closed because high winds had blown down a tree that in falling had knocked down power lines across the road. Little were we to know that this would turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead we went to the Booth Rock Trail. Part of the trail lies on the old bed of the Ottawa, Arnprior, and Parry Sound Railway. Here, alders embrace the sides of the bed, and with water beyond them, it is often a good place for seeing birds. Immediately we knew it was going to be good birding. Warblers flitted all through the alders,
most at eye level or lower. Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, and Magnolia warblers were everywhere, and most were males in full breeding splendour. And most were only one to three metres away. After a mere two hours, 18 species of these stunning birds were tallied! The warblers were down low because that is where food was found. When sunny and warm, insects are plentiful up high in trees. But when it is really cold, as it was that morning, insects take shelter near the ground. As a result, views of the warblers were spectacular. It seemed only appropriate that after visiting the two best places in North America for seeing warblers in migration, it would be in my beloved Algonquin where I would have the best two hours of warbler-viewing of my life! Ottawa Valley Strong ladies’ team brings home bronze medals John Curry john.curry@metroland.com
The Ottawa Valley Strong ladies softball team brought home bronze medals from the recent World Masters Games in New Zealand. The team included players from West Carleton as well as from other parts of the area. There were 24 teams in the 45 plus age group for ladies recreational softball at the World Masters Games. Not only did the Ottawa Valley Strong team finish third and win the bronze medals, but two other Canadians teams won the gold and silver medals, making for a Canadian sweep of the medals. In the World Masters Games, the Ottawa Valley Strong played eight games, winning seven of them. This allowed the team to advance to the medals play. The Ottawa Valley Strong beat the Breakaway Red 45’s of Australia 8-7 in double overtime innings to win the bronze medals. The Vancouver Island, BC team Loss of Gravity won the gold medals while the Subway Sluggers team from Prince Edward Island won the silver

were held in Auckland, New Zealand from April 21 to April 30. The 16-member Ottawa Valley Strong team which included players from West Carleton, Almonte, Kanata and surrounding areas as well as one player from Saskatchewan and four from southern Ontario left on April 15 for these 2017 World Masters Games, complete with new uniforms. For 56 year old Jayne Coady of Kinburn, the trip to the World Masters Games not only marked a culmination of her lifelong passion for the sport but also marked a personal triumph as she has worked her way back from a heart attack which she had suffered in March 2014. The team was comprised of players aged 45 to 58 years old who have raised their kids and put them through sports and now are doing something for themselves. “It’s our time now” was the tag line for the group. The team hosted a GoFundMe account and held raffles and a ‘women in sport’ dinner with music and silent and live auctions to raise the $80,000 needed for the team to travel to these World Masters Games in New Zealand.

For two years, the team has practised indoors during the off season, using gyms at South Carleton High School in Richmond and at West Carleton High School at Dunrobin. In addition, the team played during the season in the Canada’s Capital Fastball League which included teams from Quyon, Nepean, Ottawa, Kars and other areas, as well as the Ottawa Valley Strong playing out of Carp. The World Masters Games included over 20,000 athletes competing in over 25 different sports. The Ottawa Valley Strong team played in the recreational ball category since the team has never competed in these World Masters Games before. The World Masters Games involves athletes from countries around the world, ranging in age from 25 to 101 years old. Athletes attend the World Masters Games not only to compete on a world stage against their peers but also to meet fellow athletes from around the world and to enjoy the atmosphere of the host city which in this case is Auckland in New Zealand. The World Masters Games are held every four years. In 2013, they were held in Torino in Italy.

Fun for a great cause at KatieBears Fun Day on May 27 in Renfrew Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com
It’s a true labour of love — 12,000 bears, countless events, several trips to Jamaica and endless smiles. The KatieBears Family Fun Day is coming up on May 27 and organizers say it’s a great opportunity to support an organization doing some impressive work in the community and beyond. The seed for KatieBears was planted in 2008 when the Fraser family’s business, GoZoom, entered a float into a local Christmas parade, explains McNab/Braeside’s Lynda Fraser. Among the float features were stuffed bears used for decoration. Their daughter Katie noticed a child along the parade route who looked like they could use a boost so she offered one of the bears. When Katie passed away in 2009, the organization was created. “We decided as a family it would be a great way to keep her memory alive by helping others and putting smiles on people’s faces,” said Fraser. She estimates the group has given out in the neighbourhood of 12,000 bears. It wasn’t long before the group’s good works stretched beyond providing bears at local events — KatieBears has adopted two schools in Jamaica — one in Dias and one in Grange Hill. Lynda and her husband Ian, along with volunteers, make a trip to Jamaica each year to deliver goodies and visit the schools. Six volunteers joined the Frasers for the trip this year. The first school to be adopted was Dalmally Basic in Dias, Hanover Parish. “When we first met them they were sitting on the dirt floor trying to get an education,” she said. “KatieBears adopted this school in 2012. To date the school has received electricity, tile floors, bathrooms, water supply, a stove, perimeter fence and many items such as first aid kits,
school supplies, books, playground toys and of course KatieBears for all the children,” said Fraser. It’s an awesome experience to go back each year and meet with the students and teachers and see the fruits of their labour, said Fraser. KatieBears has approached local service clubs about their efforts and officials are pleased with a recent development. “Douglas Lions Club has generously donated $1,000 of the $1,004 needed for the immediate replacement of the fridge at Dalmally Basic,” she said. “We’re so pleased and so thankful.” This is the final year KatieBears will be running their fun day — they’ll still host an annual bowlathon (Nov. 12 this year) and will concentrate on different fundraising efforts. “It is the final year and we’re planning on going out with a big bang,” said Fraser. Among the other upcoming events is a music night at Lumbertown Ale House in Arnprior on Aug. 31, featuring Danielle Allard, who will judge the KatieBear Idol event that is part of the fun day. The fun day takes place at the Royal Canadian Air Force Wing in Renfrew from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 27. The event features games and prizes for the kids, Skyza balls, and vendors and food booths on-site and also includes a silent auction with over 80 items to bid on. Fifteen singers have already signed up for the KatieBear Idol contest and there’s room for more. There are three divisions — youth (12 and under), teen (13-18) and adult (19 and up) and the first-place winners of each category receive $100. Second and third-place winners will receive special gift packs and there’s also a prize for the participant who collects the most pledges. A minimum of $15 in pledges in required. For information or to preregister to compete in this year’s event, email KatieBearIdol@yahoo.ca. More information is also available on the KatieBears’ page on Facebook.

Arnprior’s highest house sale bodes well for sector Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
The most expensive house sale in Arnprior’s history is at the conditional stage, and is an indicator that Ottawa and area real estate is doing well. That’s the opinion of Shane Lanigan, real estate broker at Lifestyle Real Estate Group. He oversaw the $910,000 sale of 15 Lena St., on the waterfront near Chats Lake Yacht Club. The Dochart native usually sells homes in Ottawa, the last five of which have been very good years. “It’s a nice home. You are going to get a lot of bang for your buck in Arnprior,” Lanigan said. “That’s true for all of Ottawa. There are quality homes for reasonable pric-
es and a nice lifestyle.” Part of the boon in sales might have to do with skyrocketing home prices in Toronto, where traffic and other big city problems has some looking to sell high and move to outer regions, even Ottawa. Prices soared a record 33 per cent in the province’s capital this year, pushing the cost of a detached home in the core to about $1.6 million. The buyer for 15 Lena — built in 1989 — is coming from the Kitchener/Waterloo area for work-related reasons. Lanigan has noticed prices in the Ottawa region jump about 10 per cent since last fall. Where a home went for $300,000 in the near past, it now goes for $500,000. See REAL, page 14

HOME, GARDEN & RENOVATION
Real estate enjoys exceptional year County’s flood cleanup advice Continued from page 13
“Selling above the asking price, multiple offers: Ottawa is definitely doing well. Lots of buyers this year,” he said. “We’ve seen some good years in the past, but not to this extent.” Another reason the west end is doing well may have to do with the anticipated move of the Department of National Defence from downtown to the former Nortel building near Bells Corners. Many of the thousands of wellpaid employees live in Orleans. Already tired of fighting through “the split” leading to Highway 417 Queensway, at least some are expected to pack up and move west. Lanigan, as Mayor David Reid has often said in the past, believes it could lure more families to town.
The Lena Street home, which is selling with a boat and other items that push it to $1.1 million, is the highest price in town limits since MLS has kept records, Lanigan said. An estate in Gillies Grove sold for more, but he called that more of a land sale. Another sold for $1 million, but that was a farm so considered part commercial. Yet another, developer Don Johnston’s home on McLean Avenue, was in the $1 million range. Leaving Lena and Arnprior is Jim Silye. The former CFL football star, Calgary MP, and businessman chuckled at the notion that his house is the highest sale. He wouldn’t say much about it, not wanting to jinx it at the conditional stage. “No, but I’m pleased. It is good,” Silye said. “And I’ll be back of course.”
As a trustee overseeing the $175-million construction of a new Canada Museum of Science and Technology, he’ll be back at least four times a year. Silye grew up in Arnprior before heading to the University of Ottawa and a football career with the Calgary Stampeders. He still holds the record for most punt returns in a season, at 123. He is “loading up the car” for Calgary where he was Reform Party MP following the 1993 election. He has also had considerable success in oil and gas exploration. Silye returned home to Arnprior in time for the 2010 election, but lost the mayoral race to Reid by just 221 votes. He is fond of recalling when his kids were young they would cottage in Arnprior every summer.
With temperatures warming and the holiday weekend approaching, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit advises all residents affected by the recent flooding to take the following precautions: • Continue to stay out of flood waters, if at all possible, to avoid exposure to potentially high levels of harmful bacteria. Recreational water use in lakes and rivers that were heavily flooded should be avoided until water levels return to normal. Be on the lookout for floating debris. • Use personal protection during any flood cleanup activities. Wear rubber gloves and other protective clothing, including the use of an N95 mask when cleaning indoors to avoid breathing in potentially harmful airborne contaminants such as mould. • Wash your hands with soap and clean water before handling food, after
participating in flood cleanup activities and after handling articles contaminated with flood water. • Do not eat any foods that have been exposed to flood waters. Canned goods and sealed beverages may be used if these containers can be thoroughly cleaned and dried. • Perishable foods in refrigerators should be discarded if the power has been out for more than four hours. • Frozen foods may be refrozen if ice crystals are still present and the food was not exposed to flood waters. • Contents of sand bags may be contaminated and should not be used on beaches, gardens or sandboxes. Keep sand away from wells and waterways. Check with your local municipal office for more information regarding disposal of sand bags. For more information visit rcdhu. com.

IN MEMORIAM
Meilleur, Armand (Cooney) – In loving memory of a dear husband, father and Bompé who passed away May 24, 2003. When God saw you getting so tired, And a cure was not to be, He put His arms around you, And whispered “Come to me” He didn’t like what you went through, And he finally gave you rest, His garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. And when we knew you were sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain, We wouldn’t wish you back, To suffer that endless pain again. You are not forgotten, Though on earth you are no more, Still in memory you are with us, As you always were before. Gone but not forgotten, Love, Della, Chad, Tammy (Rob), Frank (Amy), Alleshia, Rylie, Reagan, MaKoy , and Landon

Do you have concerns about what would happen to you if you were injured, or became seriously ill, and lost the capacity to decide upon and communicate your wishes to your caregivers? Without planning ahead for these circumstances, you might find yourself in a situation where decisions were being made on your behalf by a person that you would not have chosen, or where the decisions being made for you were contrary to your wishes. You can address these concerns by making a Power of Attorney for Personal Care. This is a legal document which takes effect when you are incapable of making your own decisions about your personal care. Personal care decisions are those related to your health, including the giving of consent to medical procedures, and decisions pertaining to diet, housing, clothing, hygiene, and safety. The Power of Attorney for Personal Care appoints someone of your choice (your “Attorney for Personal Care”) to make personal care decisions on your behalf, when you are incapable. The word “Attorney” does not mean “lawyer” in this context. It means a substitute decision maker, and can be any mentally competent adult other than (with a few exceptions) someone who is paid to provide care services for you. The benefit of completing the Power of Attorney for Personal Care is that it enables you to choose, in advance, the person you consider most suitable to perform this very important function for you at a time when you are most vulnerable. You can specify your preferences in terms of medical treatments and other personal care choices, and your Attorney is legally bound to honour your wishes. If you have not expressed any wishes, your Attorney must act in your best interest, taking into account your values and beliefs as well as the benefits and risks of the proposed action. Your Attorney cannot apply on your behalf for a physician-assisted death. This can only be done by you yourself, at a time when you are mentally competent. You may appoint more than one Attorney for Personal Care, but you must make it clear whether you are authorizing them to act jointly, or whether it is possible for one to act alone. If they must act jointly, decision making will often be delayed, especially if they cannot agree. Your Attorney for Personal Care cannot make any decisions on your behalf as long as you are mentally capable. Further info can be found on the internet at www.cleo.on.ca/en/publications/power and the form itself can be found at https://www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/family/pgt/ incapacity/poa.php. Due to the complexity of the topic it is a good idea to consult your doctor and lawyer.

Mary did not need lessons on how to pray Mary Cook Memories
There I sat, as I did every Sunday, in the same pew, in the same row, in the same church. Only a calamity of the highest order would keep us away from the Lutheran Church in Northcote on a Sunday morning. And it was always an ordeal for me. Goodness knows, I tried my best to understand what the minister was talking about, but as usual, I had no idea what he was saying. His very voice sent chills up my spine. I couldn’t understand why. When he came to visit, I wasn’t the least bit frightened of him, but everything changed when he came swooping down past our pew leading the choir, which that day consisted of one man and two women, all of whom had seen better days. But one thing you could say for
them, they were loyal. Never missing a Sunday. Once the minister lumbered up to the pulpit, he paused, scanned the entire church, and I was absolutely sure when his eyes lit on me, he knew I was scared out of my wits. I wondered if my fright had something to do with his flowing robes, since my brother Emerson whose imagination was many notches above mine, said they reminded him of a huge black vulture getting ready to swoop down on us. His voice thundered through the church, and his face got redder and redder, and soon great beads of sweat began running onto his black robe. But I had to pay attention, because soon he would send us children off to Sunday School. And the woman who taught us, it was rumoured, could recite the bible cover to cover, and she would be waiting for us, with her arms folded in such a way, that she reminded me of a
praying mantis. We scrunched down on little red painted chairs, and I knew exactly what would happen next. She would ask us what the message was from the minister. And of course, I would have no idea. I would purposely go into a coughing fit in the hope she would bypass me and go onto one of the other poor souls waiting to be grilled on what it meant to be a Christian. Thankfully the questions would end, and the teacher would begin the lesson, which had everything to do with being a better person. We were told we had to pray a lot. Well, that was no ordeal for me. Not only did we say our prayers kneeling at Mother’s knee before we went to bed, I had long ago developed the habit of praying for just about anything I wanted, from new white ankle socks with lace around them, to praying for bad Marguirite to move to some foreign country.
I even prayed my red hair would turn black, and that one morning I would wake up and every last freckle would have vanished through the night. So the teacher didn’t have to talk to me about praying…no siree! And on she would go. And she always seemed to know when the last hymn was being sung upstairs, because she would tell us to bow our heads for the closing prayer. This was when I started to enjoy Sunday School. Because each of us would be given a little folded piece of shiny paper with a story printed inside, and always there was a picture of Jesus on the front page, which I loved, and which was far different from the one hanging in the church upstairs, which I thought made Him look very sad. That day I was very quiet on the way home, as I tried to figure out why Sunday church was so different from the days when we went to church for
the strawberry social, the Christmas concert, the pot-luck suppers, and the once-a-year lawn social when we ran races, played ball, and ate home-made ice cream all of which I loved better than the Sunday church service. And I decided, maybe I wasn’t a very nice person. Maybe no amount of praying would make me any better. And even though I had no idea what Father meant when he said it, but I wondered if that was my fate. When someone did something just a bit off centre, or the news in the paper was doom and gloom, he would say, “the world is going straight to Hell in a basket.” I wondered. Would that too be my fate? Dancing up support for seniors at home organization Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Inc.
Dance to the beat ‘Noon-In-June’ while supporting Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Inc. (ABMSH). How can you dance to the beat? By joining Hyacinth Chatterton’s Line Dancing Fundraiser being offered at the Nick Smith Centre starting in June. The program, Noon-In-June, will run four Mondays in June: 5,12, 19 and 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in the main hall of the Nick Smith Centre. Participants are welcome from all age groups, gender, and at all levels from beginners to experienced dancers. You might find it handy to “dedicate” a one hour lunch each week to join in the fun while getting your daily exercise. The cost is based on the regular ‘drop-in’ fee for this program; $40 per participant to be paid directly to ABMSH at the time of registration and before the programme begins. The $40 will cover attendance for each individual participant for all four Noon-In-June line dancing sessions. Please note that Hyacinth, in partnership with the staff at the Nick
Smith Centre and Liz Wall, development co-ordinator, ABMSH, has organized this event and is gladly offering her time, at no charge, all in support of ABMSH. With the abundance of space in the Nick Smith Centre hall, there will be no limit to the number of participants (within the legal capacity of course).

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Prove yourself with actions instead of words, Aries. Your productivity will not speak for itself, so you may need to do some self-promotion to get the word out.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you know what needs to get done. Now it is just a matter of finding the time to accomplish everything. Simplify things by writing all of your tasks down.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Explaining a proposal may require some creative thinking, Sagittarius. Make a list of all the talking points and then narrow down your options this week.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, your words will carry a lot of weight when you speak about a topic that is dear to your heart. Others might be inspired by your message, and you can recruit helpers.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You may have to explain your point of view over and over again before others see your way of thinking, Virgo. Don’t let this discourage you this week.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you tend to hold yourself to a very high standard because you always want to do your best the first time out of the gate. Others appreciate your dedication.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Do not get caught up in gossip and hearsay, Gemini. That can compromise your credibility at work and among friends. Stay focused on your responsibilities.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, once you are knee-deep in a project, you may not need to take frequent breaks. You’re ready to plow through to the finish line and reap the rewards of hard work.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, sometimes it seems as if you have a sixth sense, especially where finding good deals are concerned. You’re happy to be the shopper of the family.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 While you shouldn’t compare yourself to others too often, once in a while it can illustrate just how far you have come. Why not compare against the person you once were?
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, no matter which words come out of your mouth, others are compelled to listen when you speak. Recognize the impact your words can have on others.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, extreme focus on a subject can be a help or a hindrance. Remember to remain flexible in the next few days.
