Aging demographics in Arnprior .COM has raised the question whether two ice pads at Nick Smith Centre are necessary. The town has trended away for years from younger families using the two ice surfaces for hockey, ringette, figure skating and other sports. There are fewer kids. Arnprior District High School once held 1,100 students. It is down to less than 600. And the kids are playing fewer or different sports. Statistics show fewer Canadian kids are willing or financially able to play skating-related sports. Mayor David Reid, during a “long range capital forecast” discussion at the May 24 town council meeting, raised the issue of repurposing the B ice pad. Reid is asking for solid reasons why taxpayers should pay up to $1 million in capi-

tal expenses in the rink in over the next 10 years. “I can’t say I agree (with the repurpose),” Reid said after the meet.CA ing. “I just want to make sure that’s what we need and what residents want.” He said fewer kids playing minor sports is a fact in Arnprior. He just wants to make sure the case is made for keeping the status quo. The long range capital forecast is a tool council revisits regularly. It examines all town facilities and associated maintenance and eventual replacement costs. “It’s a lot of money, so I just want to make sure. I want to be well informed.” Reid said. However, at the meeting he also raised the possibility of turning the B pad into an indoor soccer pitch or tennis court. If it did get repurposed, he said, it would stay a recreation facility for youth (and all residents).

It should be quite the day in Arnprior this Saturday, June 4. And it’s all free. The annual Priorpalooza Music Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Robert Simpson Park with the best of local musical entertainment and plenty of family fun. Priorpalooza began in 2012 as a celebration of Arnprior’s 150th anniversary and has become an annual event. On the same day several of the area’s churches have combined to hold a first-time event they are calling ‘The Big Give’ as a thank you to an ‘amazing’ community. Glad Tidings Pentecostal, Arnprior Wesleyan, First Baptist, St. John’s Lutheran, Emmanuel Anglican, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Grace-St. Andrew’s United, River Stone Christian Fellowship and the Oasis churches are holding a variety of free garage sales, barbecues, clothing and book give-aways and more, most of them from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For the full list, see the item in the What’s Happening column on Page 46. Town of Arnprior turns down stampede grant request Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior council voted at the May 24 meeting to no longer subsidize the Arnprior Stampede. The second annual stampede is set for June 10-12 this year. It has enjoyed a $5,000 grant from the municipality in the past, but no longer. Largely because it was such a success last year. Mayor David Reid said the stampede did a fine job last year and was quite profitable. It is also great for the community to have the event in Arnprior. But the

policy in place that allowed the town to give $5,000 does not specify the money should be given ad infinitum. It is quasi seed-money for start-up ventures. “Grants are not intended to be ongoing,” Reid said. “It is a for-profit organization. If they make $20,000, is it up to the tax base to make it $25,000?” He added that residents already support the stampede with their ticket purchases. “It’s a wonderful event that does a lot for the community,” he said. “And I can see it from both sides. But in the end it’s taxpayers’ money.” (For more on the stampede, see page 7.)

McNab-Braeside Summer Safety Day Staff

The Township of McNabBraeside is helping residents stay safe this summer. The annual Summer Safety Day is set for Friday, June 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at the municipal building at 2508 Russett Dr. There will be a free barbecue, entertainment and ‘fun for all’. There will also be a collection set up for the Arnprior and District Food Bank. The main attraction for the

event is an auto extrication demonstration by the McNab-Braeside Fire Department. That will probably be held about 1 p.m. McNab-Braeside fire chief Dave Hartwick said the fire department will be demonstrating its new extrication equipment. SAFETY ADVICE

A number of community partners will be on hand at the safety day offering summer safety advice including the fire department, Ontario Provincial

Police, Renfrew County Paramedics and Ontario Power Generation. “The summer can be a dangerous time with so much activity going on ... so it’s worth it to remind people to be safe ... and have some fun at the same time,” said Hartwick. Some of the children’s activities include a fish tank with prizes, face painting, cake, popcorn and freezies. There will be a tumbling demonstration by Laws of Motion Trampoline and Tumbling.

Fire ban declared in McNab-Braeside The unseasonably hot weather has prompted the McNab-Braeside Fire Department to issue a temporary fire ban for the entire township. The fire ban was issued at noon Thursday, May 26 and will remain in effect until further notice. There was a small amount of rain Thursday evening and a few showers since, but the record temperature Sunday likely means the ban will stay for quite some time.

The fire department explained the ban on open air and recreational burning within the municipality was issued because of “extremely dry fine fuels on the ground and windy conditions.” The fire ban was implemented to avoid possible hazardous situations that may result from outdoor burning and human error, the fire department went on in a statement late last week. The fire ban includes all campfires at established campgrounds

and on private properties as well as fireworks and pyrotechnics. Fire permits will not be issued during the ban and all current permits are immediately on hold. For further information, contact fire chief Dave Hartwick at 613-316-2097 or the Township of McNab Braeside at 613-6235756. For updates on the ban, consult the Township website at www.mcnabbraeside.com.

Firefighters also spread the word that a fire ban had been declared in the township earlier that day.

Arnprior fire department starts safety series with fireworks use Staff

In its continuing efforts to encourage all town residents to be fire safe, the Arnprior Fire Department is again launching a ‘Summer Safety Campaign’. The goal of the series of monthly reminders starting in June is to share essential safety tips to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. This first month’s topic is fireworks safety. To minimize the risk of fire and burn injury, the Office of the Fire Marshal recommends attending public fireworks displays hosted by a municipality or other responsible organization. If you still choose to have a family fireworks or an informal neighbourhood display, check the local bylaws regarding the use of fireworks within the Town of Arnprior. Here are some important safety tips to be followed: • Appoint a responsible person to be in charge. Only adults who are aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks. • Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging. • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks.

• Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass. • Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged. • Light only one firework at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For dud fireworks, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water. Dispose of them in a metal container. • Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard. • Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns. As the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, it should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury. • If someone gets burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and seek medical attention, if necessary. Arnprior fire safety officer Cory Nicholas notes that a survey of 10 children’s hospitals and six hospitals across Canada showed an unexpected amount of injuries from sparklers. Some of those cases resulted in “legal fireworks” related to the injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s statistics from Fourth of July festivities indicated that sparklers were involved in 57 per cent of fireworks injuries sustained by children under five years of age, he added. “People should be aware of the potential hazard involved with handling sparklers and take precautionary measures so as not to expose their children to undue risk.”

Arnprior company opens Madawaska Doors to new opportunities Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

A legendary door maker is now owned by an Arnprior company. Next time you rewatch an episode of Ozzy Osbourne’s reality show, or the next time Tiger Woods invites you to his place for golf lessons in the back yard, check out the doors on their homes. A 40-year-old company in Barry’s Bay built them. Madawaska Doors was in a bad place last year. It maintained a niche market with little competition, but production costs were too high; at 16 to 20 weeks, lead-time was too lengthy; and customer relations were poor. The company, once employing 110 people in the Ottawa Valley town, was in danger of closing its doors for good. That’s when a call was placed to perhaps the one person who could turn its fortunes. David Watson is CEO of Plaintree Systems in Arnprior. The umbrella company is known for commercial domes that withstand extreme weather conditions. It also builds high-end fire trucks, valves and cylinders. Another side of the business specializes in electronics for the aerospace industry. So where do wooden doors fit in? “We have a lot of expensive

of Madawaska’s new show room at Plaintree. “We’ve been able to put more quality controls in place.

Arnprior will also be home base for the sales and marketing end of Madawaska Doors. Immediate leads from New Brunswick to Alberta are being pursued. The customer base is across North America and Japan. A deal might be in the works with Parks Canada, and the company wants to penetrate the heritage homes market. The company’s niche is that it uses solid wood throughout. Some in the industry will maintain that solid wood doors warp. But not when the grains are reversed and a two-inch cross strip is added to the top, Watson explained at the May 18 ribbon-cutting. Custom metal and glass designs require the specialized equipment at Plaintree, so finishings will be done in Arnprior. End pieces go to the shop class at Madawaska Valley High School in Barry’s Bay. Arnprior Mayor David Reid attended the event. A developer, he called Madawaska Doors a great product that appears in his father’s house, along with the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa and in the House of Commons. He also marvelled at Plaintree’s growth in acquisitions. “This is my third grand opening here in five years,” Reid said. No additional jobs are expected to be created in Arnprior, but Madawaska Doors could expand in Barry’s Bay.

Popular rodeo clown to return for Arnprior Stampede Staff

As well as having many topnotch rodeo competitors returning for this year’s second annual Arnprior Stampede, one of the most popular entertainers from last year is also coming back. And he is bringing his father with him. Rodeo Clown Brinson James will be back when the Arnprior Agricultural Society hosts another professional rodeo in Arnprior June 11-12. With his antics last year, James quickly became an adopted son of Arnprior. Stampede organizer Glen Howard reports he received countless emails and had people stopping him around town asking that Jams return if the society brings in the stampede again. “Well he is back and bringing with him a very special rodeo clown called Hollywood Harris, who is Brinson’s father,” says Howard. “Arnprior will be treated to best rodeo clown show in North America today.” Arnprior Stampede weekend actually begins Friday, June 10 with up to 500 local students taking advantage of a rodeo education event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will get an informative and entertain-

ing look at the world of rodeo from those involved. The stampede kick-off party runs from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. with a ‘dirt dance’ featuring the one of the area’s top party bands, Roadhouse. One Saturday, the action runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.with the rodeo from 5 to 8 p.m. in the main arena. There will also be the Ottawa Valley Team Penning Spring Jackpot competition from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and a variety of fun zones, kids activities, vendors, food stands and a beer garden at the fairgrounds. Right after the rodeo, the ‘outlaw country band’ Hoss takes to the stage as the opening act for the James Barker Band. Rodeo weekend wraps up from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday with the team penning finals from noon to 2 p.m.a and the professional rodeo from 2-5 p.m. More than 300 cowboys and cowgirls representing five different countries including Canada, Mexico, the United States, Brazil and Australia will be competing at the Arnprior Stampede, which is the season’s first official tour stop of the International Professional Rodeo Association. For tickets or more information, visit www.arnpriorstampede.com.

Students invited to learn about rodeo All area elementary students are invited to the Arnprior Fairgrounds Friday, June 10 to learn about rodeo. The Arnprior Agricultural Society and the Arnprior Stampede are hosting the students at a Cowboy Kids Rodeo Education Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As it is a professional development day, the students will be free to attend the information session that attracted more than 300 local elementary students last year despite it being a rainy day. Rodeo Education Day is a fun, educational program that cel-

ebrates the historic sport of rodeo and the spirit of the Canadian West. The popular no-charge program has been offered to Ontario area elementary schools since 1995. Instructors use student participation to demonstrate actual rodeo equipment and rodeo events. Important components of the education presentation are its positive and unique substance abuse and gang prevention messages. Students also learn about the proper way to care and treat animals. As a special addition Ontario Power Generation will be making a presentation on water safety.

OPINION

Connected to your community

When doggies do, don’t leave it

N

ow don’t that beat all. It’s been suggested locally by some dog owners (a small minority, we hope) that they can’t pick up after their pets because it would jeopardize their alpha status. Quoting some obscure dog obedience author, they suggest that if their canine sees them cleaning up after it has relieved itself, then they will no longer be top dog. And if you are no longer alpha, then you won’t be able to train your pup into the well-mannered pet it should be. This bit of gobbledygook has come in response to recent efforts by some people in Arnprior and Renfrew to have town councils increase the penalty for those who let their dogs defecate in public and don’t clean it up. The push mainly comes from the business community sick and tired of having to clean up doggy doo on sidewalks downtown before it deters customers. And it’s not only businesspeople who want a crackdown on boorish dog owners. Many citizens are annoyed, even downright hostile, at the sight each spring as the snow disappears of dog feces on area trails and in parks. It’s particularly disappointing for the folks who allow and encourage public use of such areas as Gillies Grove, the CN trail and the Arnprior and Renfrew fairgrounds to have to put up with insensitive louts who skulk

away empty-handed after letting their dogs do what comes naturally in public. The issue tends to be a highly emotional one, and can even prompt talk of vigilantism that could grow if the authorities don’t move to better curb the problem. It was suggested by at least one parent, after his youngster came through the front door trailing dog poop from his running shoes, that if only he knew where the offender lived, he’d march the lad over there to scuff it off on their carpets. Another Valley worthy suggested recently that, privacy be damned, send drones out to photograph offenders (dive bombing seems a little extreme), identify them and not only force them to clean up but post the photographs for all to see and ridicule. Okay, hyberbole does tend to take over when this matter is debated. But it does show how strongly people feel about this reoccurring blight in our communities. Which means councillors and bylaw officers should take the offense seriously, as difficult and distasteful as it is to police. The public has a role to play in embarrassing offenders too. If we are to shame, arm-twist and motivate people into removing their pets’ discharge from public places, a start would be debunking the poppycock that picking it up makes them any less able to be in charge.

Arnprior council should treat all town businesses with fairness To the Editor: This letter is in response to the May 9 Arnprior town council meeting and the story in the May 12 edition of the Chronicle-Guide. Dear council members and greater Arnprior community: On behalf of Steve & Dennis Restaurant

and The John St. Pub, we feel that we have been treated unfairly by the Arnprior town council members in their decision to disregard the zoning bylaw to exempt not only The Lumbertown Ale House, but every other new business that has opened in the downtown sector, despite forcing us to pay

thousands of dollars for parking. We don’t want any misunderstandings and would like to make everyone in our community aware that we don’t have any issues with new businesses opening in the downtown sector; we welcome more businesses and economic growth in the downtown area. There is no feud between us and any other businesses springing up in our community. Our issue is with the Arnprior Town Council and their unfair treatment towards us. We work hard for our money just like everyone else and it makes no sense why the town would enforce the parking fee with us and not other businesses in the same situation, especially when, according to the town council, there is no more available land for

additional parking. If there is no more available land to create more parking in the downtown area, why does the town council still impose the cashin-lieu of parking as an option? The Chronicle-Guide wrote: Reid said “... businesses were given three options when it comes to parking. Only one involved paying cash in lieu. The others were to apply for a rezoning or ask for a minor variance.” Why has the town council not enforced the bylaw on Krave Bistro, the Sweet & Sassy Co. and the new restaurant being built next to Jim’s restaurant like they did with us?

Moose memories Arnprior resident Bernie Noonan submitted this photo taken on June 30, 2010 to prove to people that the moose causing a sensation in the area of the Antrim Truck Stop recently isn’t the only one to have visited Arnprior. This moose was seen trotting through McLean Avenue park about 6 a.m. The current day visiting moose has been reported to have moved across Highway 17 closer to Arnprior proper.

Welcome overpass, farewell ‘Little Bump’ To the Editor: The new overpass at Campbell Drive is complete. Even my mother thinks the ease and efficiency of access entirely wonderful. But as with most things in life, something gained means something lost. At one time, Campbell Drive was just the plain old 12th Line that ran at right angles to the TransCanada Highway when it meandered through the town of Arnprior to snake its way north along what we now think of as Russett Drive. My Uncle Gord passed away while serving as Deputy Mayor of McNab Township. They renamed the 12th Line ‘Campbell’ and paved a stretch in Pine Grove. The rest remained a dirt road but a dirt road with endless possibilities! Each Spring, my mother wondered why it took me so long to walk the two kilometers home from school. Well, there were May flowers to pick with Peter in Steven’s bush, and then there was our solemn duty to help the spring rains drain from Steven’s Hill. Peter and I wore down many a rubber boot heel as we scraped channels between mud puddles to help the water “escape.” Wonderful adventures but best of all was the ‘Little Bump’. Just past Bob Russett’s gate there was a bump. It was just a stubborn outcrop of the Precambrian Shield. I am sure that it gave Neilie McKay and the lads from McNab Township Roads all sorts of grief with the grader, but it was magic. Returning from shopping in town, we would cry “Faster, Mommy, faster!” My mother would oblige by giving the Chev a little gas and we would seem to sail over the Little Bump, our tummies giving that excited

lurch at that moment of weightlessness. Once, trudging home from school in blizzard conditions, Dad emerged from the snow beyond the Little Bump, on his tractor. We rolled our stiff, snowsuit forms into the bucket relieved that, on this occasion at least, we were not be called upon to suffer the rest of the walk with the stoicism that my father always encouraged when faced with adversity. One year, I came home from university to find a new TransCanada Highway, rerouted through Charlie Nieman’s and Bob Russett’s fields. Bob Russett’s stack-log house was gone and so too was my little bump, buried under tons of gravel and asphalt. Now, with the new Campbell Drive overpass, the transition is complete. Yes, it is faster and easier, but I wonder if our five-year-olds will experience the same joy that we did out of the ‘Little Bump’. Change is a condition of life, but we are allowed mixed feelings. Krave didn’t pay for parking like pub Continued from page 8

The bylaw existed when Krave Bistro first opened for business and yet they have not paid cash-in-lieu of parking nor did they apply for rezoning or ask for a minor variance, but somehow The John St. Pub was given three options that other businesses are permitted by the Town Council to disregard. Back in 2010 the town council informed us that if we did not have the currently existing grandfathered Steve & Dennis Restaurant, located downstairs, that they would never have given us permission to build The John St. Pub upstairs. Yet not one but three new bars are opening in the downtown sector without any hassle. How is it possible for three new bars to open when it was so difficult for us to open just one bar? With actions like these, I highly doubt the Town Council would have approved any application for a rezoning or minor variance in our favour. In 2008 Giant Tiger requested a cash-inlieu of parking agreement to recognize a deficiency of 59 of the required 108 (49 provided on-site) parking spaces at a rate of $50/space for the 59 spaces equalling a total of $2,950. Yet, in 2010, the town council charged The John St. Pub a rate of $400/space, equalling a total of $8,000. How is it fair to charge Giant Tiger, a business that is considerably larger and requires more parking than The John St. Pub only $2,950 for parking while charging The John St. Pub $8,000 for parking, especially when The John St. Pub does not take away any parking spots from daytime shops and is only operational a few nights a week? The town council also stated that “we”

suggested the value of parking spaces that we considered “reasonable” which never happened. We were told originally to pay $10,000, which was later decreased to $8,000 and so we paid what was requested. We were not given any options and we would never have agreed to pay more than Giant Tiger for parking; that’s ridiculous! The town council has said it is doing all it can to attract business to the downtown core, but when we first started construction of The John St. Pub they made it difficult for us to open while making it much easier for every other business that opened after us. town council members and many constituents of the greater Arnprior community have stated to us many times that the current situation is not fair to us, yet nothing has been done to correct the situation. The Chronicle-Guide wrote, Reid said: “I don’t agree with the current bylaw regulations as they apply to the downtown core.” If Reid doesn’t agree with the current bylaw, why did he not change it years ago to better suit the downtown business sector? Why wait until now to make changes to the bylaw when we raised concerns to the council years ago? If members of the town council agree that we have been treated unfairly, why don’t they do the right thing and reimburse us our $8,000 since land for more parking is not available and no other business has been charged for parking since the bylaw was enforced onto us? It is the municipality’s responsibility to be fair to all business owners in the downtown district. Dennis Xidous Arnprior

Encounters with the rare and endangered

The more time one spends outdoors, the more encounters with wild animals one has. Sometimes it is with a stunning bird such as a Scarlet Tanager that spends much of its time hidden in the leaf canopy overhead. Other times, it is with a shy and elusive creature, such as a Fisher. And on occasion it is encountering a species so rare that seeing one is like winning a lottery. Recently I encountered several rarities. After my Birdathon in Prince Edward County (where my team tallied 141 species), I visited four sand spits jutting out into Lake Erie. All four are famous for their southern flora and fauna, many of which don’t range farther north in Canada. They are also famous for spectacular spring and fall bird migration. It was primarily to see birds that I went there. I visited Rondeau Provincial Park, Point Pelee National Park and Long Point National Wildlife Area. The first two were accessed by car, but Long Point National Wildlife Area can be reached only by boat, and access is restricted. Rondeau owns a wonderful blend of mature deciduous forest (including spectacular Tulip Trees) and

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way swamp forest. It was along a trail meandering through swamp forest where I encountered a male Prothonotary Warbler. This stunning bird – golden head, yellow body, blue-gray wings and tail – was relatively common in Rondeau in earlier days, but the species has undergone an 80 per cent decline in population in the last decade, and today only a few pairs nest in Rondeau. As only about 30 individuals remain in Canada, Prothonotary Warblers are classified as Endangered. I spent several hours watching the stunning bird forage on branches and logs in the water.

Migrants were scarce at Point Pelee because northeast winds discouraged birds from flying north. However, I did see another male Prothonotary Warbler at a woodland slough. Sadly, it was alone, and sang incessantly as it searched for a mate. At 40 kilometres in length, Long Point is the second longest freshwater peninsula in the world. It is home to many unusual plants and animals; Fowler’s Toads and Spiny Softshell Turtles are but two. There is a bird banding station at the tip, and I was fortunate in spending five days there with Ron Ridout, Bill Crins and Don Sutherland, longtime friends and expert naturalists. The winds had shifted to the south and on the first two mornings birds filled the trees. Flycatchers, warblers, cuckoos, and two Redheaded Woodpeckers provided fantastic views. On the water we spotted four Pacific Loons, Arctic nesters rarely seen in migration. One morning two Dickcissels flew past, southwestern birds not commonly encountered in Ontario. Other rarities encountered included a Cerulean Warbler (also an Endangered Species) and another male Prothonotary Warbler! It is exciting to encounter rare spe-

With our relentless assault on natural habitats around the globe, the list of rare and endangered species is only going to grow longer. The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

The ticks are here: get informed at naturalists meeting June 7 Karen Runtz

Macnamara Naturalists

Katie Clow has been known to see ticks everywhere. Closing her eyes after days of dragging wooded and grassy areas for these blood-sucking parasites, visions of ticks, described in a 2014 interview, were understandable. Clow had returned to the University of Guelph, where she had obtained her doctorate in veterinary medicine three years prior. The university then became her base for research on Lyme disease - investigating wildlife ecology and factors affecting the distribution of the disease in Ontario - as she pursued a PhD in pathobiology. In the interim, public awareness of the disease rose, along with associated myths and misconceptions. RISKS ARE REAL

It is now spring 2016 in the Ottawa Valley. Lyme disease has emerged as a major public health issue and the blacklegged ticks that transmit the disease have turned Southern and Eastern Ontario woods and grassy fields into areas of risk.

One likely reason: these areas share borders with Lyme ‘hotspots’ in the United States and are within flight distance for Eastern blacklegged ticks catching rides on migratory birds. Health Canada estimates that about 10 per cent of blacklegged ticks in any infected area carry the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. The greatest risk of being bitten exists in the spring, summer and fall when more of us are hiking, fishing and camping, enjoying the great outdoors. So what’s a local to do? Get protected. Get informed. A time and place to get practical knowledge is just days away. The Macnamara Field Naturalist Club has booked Dr. Clow to speak at their next meeting on ‘A Journey into the woods: understanding Lyme disease ecology in Ontario’. The date is Tuesday, June 7, the location is the Arnprior Curling Club, and, as customary, nonmembers are welcome to attend. Details are at the end of the article. Here’s an overview of the presentation:

An adult female blacklegged tick Dr. Clow will explore the key ecological factors associated with the blacklegged tick and Lyme disease in Ontario. Emphasis will be placed on the role of habitat, climate and wildlife for the estab-

protect themselves from blacklegged ticks, while still enjoying the great outdoors. The disease itself migrates through the blacklegged ticks that pick up the Lyme bacteria when they feed off already-infected whitefooted mice, chipmunks and other small mammals and birds. The tick, now infected, then passes on the bacteria to a human or other animal during its next feeding cycle. The ticks need a blood meal from a new host at every life stage (larva, nymph, and adult) to survive. Some interesting details: • The Eastern blacklegged tick is better known to many as the “deer tick.” While these ticks like to pig out on deer blood, deer blood itself doesn’t transmit the Lyme bacteria. • While we humans usually feel another blood-seeking insect - the mosquito - feasting, the tick often SCOTT BAUER, WIKIMEDIA COMMONS gorges un-noticed. What is Zika virus? Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus closely related to other mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue and West Nile virus. What are the symptoms of Zika virus infection? Following the bite of an infected mosquito, symptoms appear in 3–12 days, with patients displaying fever, joint and muscle pain, skin rash, conjunctivitis and headache. Zika virus infection is considered a mild illness that generally resolves within 2–7 days; 75–80% of people infected with Zika virus do not display symptoms. Public health officials have linked Zika virus infection to microcephaly (incomplete brain development) and Guillain-Barré syndrome. How is Zika virus transmitted? Zika virus infection is primarily transmitted as a mosquito-borne disease. These mosquitoes are not native to Ontario. It is important to emphasize that to date local transmission of Zika virus infection has not been documented. Transmission may occur through sexual contact from symptomatic males to their sex partners; there have been no documented transmissions from females to their sexual contacts. Transmission may also occur through blood transfusion. Zika virus has also been detected in breast milk, but there have been no documented Zika virus transmissions by breast milk. Recent reports from Brazil of Zika virus being found in saliva and urine require further study to determine whether these can be sources of transmission. How can Zika virus infection be treated? There is no antiviral treatment for Zika virus infection. Treatment options are medications to control fever, fluids to prevent dehydration, and rest. 12 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, June 2, 2016

Angie MacKinnon, RN (Infection Control) discusses the Zika fact sheet with Dr. Steve Chapman. “For anyone not travelling to effected countries, the risk of acquiring Zika virus is minimal,” Dr. Chapman agreed.

ATV STOLEN

An ATV was stolen from a hunt camp sometime during the week of May 12-19. The property is on Kaitlyn Road in Greater Madawaska Township. The ATV is described as a 2015 Yamaha Grizzly 700, camo coloured, with a gun rack, a windshield, and a camo box on the rear. The keys were not stolen with the ATV. PILL DROP-OFF

The OPP) is calling last week’s Prescription Drug Drop Off Day across the province, including in Arnprior, a huge success. More than 40 OPP detachments participated with 150 kilograms of prescription medications received from the public who participated in this public health and safety awareness initiative on Saturday, May 21. The OPP measures the success of the initiative by the public awareness generated in the community in regards to the dangers associated with unused prescription medications. Better awareness of the dangers of unused or expired medications means that people are increasingly making a greater effort to take prescription drugs back to the pharmacy where they can easily be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, police note. “Continued vigilance by those who are in possession of drugs that can be dangerous when they fall into the hands of those for whom they were not intended, will help to curb this public safety issue.”

Ticks ‘quest’ for host in grass, shrubs Continued from page 12

• Ticks can’t fly or even jump. They “quest,” then latch on. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) paints us a picture: “Instead, they wait for a host, resting on the tips of grasses and shrubs in a position known as ‘questing’. While questing, ticks hold onto leaves and grass by their lower legs. They hold their upper pair of legs outstretched, waiting to climb onto a passing host. When a host brushes the spot where a tick is waiting, it quickly climbs aboard. It then finds a suitable place to bite its host.” • About one in 10 blacklegged ticks in an infected area carry the bacteria that can cause the disease in humans. And the tick has to get access to you and your skin and, in most cases, feed for at least 24 hours and usually more than 36 hours before it can transmit the Lyme disease bacteria, so you have time to find and remove it. It is said that the risk of getting Lyme disease from a tick bite, even from an infected one, is small – between one and three per cent. • In 2009, when reporting of Lyme disease became nationally notifiable, there were 128 cases reported in Canada; in 2015 some 707 cases were reported. Canada’s chief public health officer has said “we think the numbers

are much higher.” In 2015, Ottawa Public Health reported there were 70 confirmed or probable cases in Ottawa. PROTECTING YOU AND YOURS

If you do venture into forests or overgrown areas, experts recommend that you: • wear light-coloured clothing to make it easier to spot ticks; • apply an insect repellant containing DEET to your skin and clothing; • wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants that you tuck into your socks and closed footwear; • shower or bathe within two hours of being outdoors to wash away loose ticks; • do a daily “full-body” check for ticks on yourself, children and pets. Don’t miss: A Journey into the woods: understanding Lyme disease ecology in Ontario. CHEO supports youth in Valley Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Katie Muldoon-Roy’s favourite subject at school is recess. And just like most seven-year-olds, she loves school. Katie lives with mitochondrial disease and intractable epilepsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility. She loves to dance to top 40 music and help her mom bake in the kitchen. As her mom Meredith Muldoon-Roy describes her daughter’s school day at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, Katie laughs as the music plays. Meredith says the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) means a lot to their family. “CHEO is like an extension of our family; we are on a first-name basis, we know everyone by name and they know Katie as well,” said Meredith. Meredith, her husband Dan and Katie, from the McNab-Braeside area, go to CHEO quite a bit. Last year they put 20,000 kilometres on their vehicle driving back and forth. Katie has already been admitted to CHEO three times this year. “With her health she can be great one moment and one second she is not,” said Meredith. “She needs physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, dietitian and child life specialists, which are all at CHEO.”

Katie is also in the complex care program at CHEO for children who have multiple medical needs - it is a single point of care and they advocate for all of her needs. Overall, Katie sees 13 different specialists at CHEO. TUNE IN TO TELETHON

Meredith encourages everyone to tune into the CHEO Telethon this weekend: Saturday, June 4 from 7 to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on CTV. “They are your best bet,” said Meredith. “Doctors in Arnprior are great at what they do, but they are not pediatric specialists. Even if your child doesn’t travel to CHEO, those doctors might call CHEO for advice.” Meredith volunteers at the CHEO foundation in the afternoon while Katie attends school and the family usually watches the telethon at home. “Children are our future, of all places CHEO should be a place for your yearly donation,” said Meredith. “For the fact kids need extra special equipment and skill that your average doctor does not have.” CHEO is a very special place for the Muldoon-Roy family. “It is an extension of our home.” For more information on the telethon or to donate, visit www.cheofoundation.com.

GEMMA ROBILLARD/SUBMITTED

Meredith, Katie and Dan Muldoon-Roy are a typical happy family who just has to watch out for a few extra things as Katie lives with mitochondrial disease. The family is gearing up to watch the CHEO Telethon this weekend June 4 and 5.

Funding to our health care system will increase by over $1 billion this year.

Investing in new and better ways for all Ontarians to get the care they need means: • 700 new doctors and specialists • 35 hospitals currently being renewed, modernized or expanded • $250 million invested in home and community care • $345 million invested to improve wait times and access to care These investments ensure a strong health care system for both today and tomorrow.

Becoming a hero for CHEO as easy as picking up the phone Erin McCraken Erin.mccracken@metroland.com

A simple phone call can make a huge difference. Organizers of the CHEO Telethon are preparing for the 33rd annual 24-hour event June 4 and 5, the CHEO Foundation’s largest fundraiser in support of the regional children’s hospital, which provides care to children from across eastern Ontario, western Quebec and from as far away as Nunavut. Last year it raised a record-breaking $7.94 million, up from $7.1 million in 2014. “It really shows that the community doesn’t want the hospital to go anywhere,” said Jacqueline Belsito, vicepresident of philanthropy and community engagement at the CHEO Foundation. “They really secure the future by participating.” Televised on CTV, the live broadcast launches on June 4 at 7 p.m. and will feature poignant interviews with current and former patients and their families, as well as some of CHEO’s medical team.

Co-operators takes CHEO pledges The staff at the Arnprior Co-operators Insurance office will again staff local phone lines in support of this weekend’s CHEO Telethon. The Suzanne How & Associates office is also selling CHEO merchandise to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. How notes that there are a variety of items for sale from CHEO bears to caps and shirts. The Co-operators office in Arnprior has been actively helping out the telethon for several years. While it’s not holding a barbecue this year, it is expanding the time staff will be on the phones lines during the telethon. Arnprior and area people wanting to make pledges to the telethon can call 613-623-3789 anytime during the event or drop by the office at 27 John St. North. The telethon is being aired on CTV Ottawa from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 4 and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 5. “We’ll be open all weekend,” said How. “It’s important that we support CHEO … this weekend is all about the kids.” ART SALE

People can support CHEO by buying artworks by local artist this Saturday, June 4 at the Arnprior Public Library. The art sale runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in the library’s meeting room. Artist contributions are being accepted up to 1 p.m..

SEPTIC SYSTEMS

They will reveal “the real breadth and depth that’s going on here,” Belsito said. “It’s not just an emergency department.” More than 70,000 infants, children and youth come through the hospital’s ER doors every year, but there is so much more that’s offered in terms of long-term and complex care, she explained. Allison Franceschina, a nurse and manager of CHEO’s neonatal intensive care unit, the neonatal transport team, follow-up clinic and clinical care respiratory therapy, will appear on the upcoming show. She will help tell the story of a new isolette deck being donated for the transport unit, which is a mini intensive care unit on wheels. It has a ventilator, suction machine, respiratory support, a full monitoring system and lighting and will improve care for the team’s youngest and smallest patients that the team responds to throughout eastern and northern Ontario. The purchase of such expensive equipment is largely thanks to the community’s support. “We have to find equipment that fits a 23-week pre-term gestation baby up to a child that’s 18 years of age, ” said Franceschina. She took part in last year’s telethon, answering phones with some of the 1,000 volunteers who made the event a success. “It was so nice to talk with donors and actually thank them verbally and express how much gratitude and appreciation we have for them taking the time to acknowledge the work that we do for our patients,” she said. Six patients will be the stars of the show as they share their experiences at CHEO, including a teen diagnosed with a severe brain injury and a baby diagnosed with cancer while still in the womb. “There’s some real miracles,” said Belsito. The telethon will also highlight key advancements CHEO researchers and scientists are making towards improved treatment and care. Money raised this year during the telethon will go toward research, staff training and toys, games and crafts for patients, as well as medical equipment. That’s why superheroes are again needed this year. This year’s theme for the fundraiser echoes that of previous years: “Be a SuperHERO for CHEO.” To generate excitement and enthusiasm ahead of the 24-hour show, June 3 will be proclaimed “Be a SuperHERO for CHEO Day” in Ottawa. Everyone is encouraged to dress as their favourite superhero.

Arnprior pasty pro wins international award does a lot of work promoting pasties. “That’s all I do and I think I am doing a good job,” said Grant. “It makes me think I’m doing a good job with my pasties. It makes me feel like my pasties are worthy.” A pasty is a semi-circular pastry with a crimped like edge with different fillings inside, Grant has 15 different types. “Pasties come from Cornwall, so to be recognized by the World Championship in Cornwall is a huge honour,” he said. “My dad grew up in Plymouth, which is the next county over. That’s the closest my roots get to Cornwall.” Grant travelled to England on Feb. 29 for the contest on March 5. “I was up for 24 hours straight; it was brutal,” he recalled.

Prior pasty pride! Matt Grant of The Great British Pasty Pie Co. has been crowned the Pasty Ambassador at the World Cornish Pasty Competition. Last year at the same event his pasty placed fourth and this year he received one of the top awards. “One of the organizers said this is the most coveted award,” said Grant. “This is the award that everyone wants.” This is the first time the award has been given to a Canadian. Grant says he is very proud of the award. “I take it everywhere with me, I’m scared it TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND might break!” The award criteria states it is for a person Matt Grant of The Great British Pasty Pie Co. in Arnprior holds up his Pasty Ambassador who embodies the event and someone who award he received at the World Pasty Championships in Cornwall, England.

Grant travels 3,000 miles for world pasty award Grant who moved to the Arnprior area in the 1980s from England stayed with relatives just outside of London. “I stayed with my Aunt; she came and helped me get set up,” he said. “The roads were very different and made travelling longer.” The week before he was able to work on new recipes and the morning of the event he arrived in the morning to set up his bacon and

cheese pasty. “You have to have one for display and one for the judges to sample,” said Grant. After he set up, he was able to explore the Eden Project, which is a large bio-dome area. The 40-50 judges examined the delicious items for the Oggy (another name for a pasty) Oscars and the winners were announced shortly after 5 p.m. Grant was backstage talking to one of the organizers who asked

him about his background. He thought he was going to be mentioned in the ceremony because he had travelled the furthest to compete. “He was on stage and started to say all the information about me, how I had travelled 3,000 miles to be there,” and then to Grant’s excitement, “he said the award goes to Matt Grant!” “I was quite blown away as I walked up on stage, due to the fact it was such a prestigious award,”

said Grant. He thinks the international recognition is a big deal. “I want to make the best pasties in the world,” said Grant. “I will get there someday.” LOCAL SALES

Refugee committee seeks more volunteers to help second family Project Arnprior Welcome is seeking motivated and committed individuals to form a second core committee to support a second refugee family coming to Arnprior. The first family sponsored by the group has arrived in Arnprior and is doing well. The current committee has committed many hours in planning the arrival, fundraising, language training and community support for the family here in Arnprior. Many volunteer hours are still needed to provide ongoing emotional and social support of the family for the next 10 or more months. Although enough funds were gen-

erously donated for the sponsorship of a second family, the committee requires additional volunteers to help share the workload involved in settling them in Arnprior. Enthusiastic and committed new volunteers will help to ensure a positive experience in settling them into their new home. The committee notes that there is still a need for volunteers to provide help with transportation, learning English and childcare while the parents are in the classroom If you are interested in helping, please contact Katherine Miller-Gatenby at 613622-0506.

Once a month a busy group of local realtors gather for breakfast to share listing information, network and preview each other’s listings. With the ups-and-downs of an active real estate market, the brainstorming sessions keep this group of professionals wellinformed of trends in the marketplace. Although the members act as independent contractors under the management of many different brokerages, the group knows all too well the benefits of working together in an industry that is stressful and competitive. The ‘Realtor Breakfast Club’ and ‘house tour’ provides realtors with up-to-date information that helps them analyze active and sold listings. Previewing listings gives realtors critical knowledge to help price homes for their seller and buyer clients. With many years of experience, the realtors have been in thousands of homes. Modern technology offers the buyer access to more photos, virtual tours and tools to help in their decision to buy a home, but very few houses are purchased without actually seeing the house first, which makes the services of a realtor invaluable. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) states that 87 per cent of all buyers

used the services of a realtor when buying and 89 per cent when selling their home. This local group of realtors cover a broad geographical area from Greater Madawaska and beyond through to the City of Ottawa and all parts in between. All brokers and salespersons are required to complete educational courses prior to becoming registered and are also required to take continuing education courses. Selling a home involves more than viewing it and submitting an offer. Professional realtors help their clients determine market value and aid in making sure that problems are solved long before the closing date. The Arnprior Realtors Breakfast Club started about 10 years ago. Sellers are delighted when 10 to 20 agents preview their home. Often after a tour, an agent will be able to match a buyer directly to a house that was viewed on the tour. If you are considering selling or purchasing a home, the realtors club encourages you to “choose a local agent” who will work hard with knowledge of the local market and the support of this group of hardworking realtors. ADHS girls rugby team qualifies for Ontario championship Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

The Arnprior District High School girls’ rugby team won the Eastern Ontario title in convincing fashion last week. Now they are trying to add an Ontario title to their impressive list of accomplishments. Playing in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) championship, the A/AA team won two straight home games at Dochart Park on May 24 to qualify for OFSSA. Number one seeded Arnprior trounced fourth seeded St. Michael of Kemptville 58-0 in the semi-final. Then, in the championship game against number two seed Napanee, the Arnprior girls won easily by a score of 43-0. “Relentless physicality and an unmatched territorial kicking game were two of the biggest keys to victory,” said coach Glenn Wallace. ADHS advanced to the Ontario championshp tournament in Ottawa May 30 to June 1. The Arnprior team, ranked third in the 16-team tournament, was expected to seriously challenge for a medal (the final game ended after press deadline).

ADHS wins another track championship Staff

Arnprior District High School athletes excelled at the Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association (UOVHSAA) Track and Field Championships May 13 even if they didn’t have home field advantage. At the Terry Fox track complex at Mooney’s Bay in Ottawa, ADHS finished first in both girls and boys aggregate scores, piling up a whopping 981 points. Valour High School of Petawawa was second with 595 points. The event is usually held in Arnprior,

but was moved to Ottawa this year because some work on the ADHS track meant it wasn’t ready in time. The top senior girl was ADHS’s Anne-Marie McNab, who earned 30 points, followed closely by Arnprior’s Paula Meek and Opeongo’s Jill Barr with 28 points each. ADHS’s Kurtis Gardiner earned 28 points, good enough to be runner-up to Valour’s Nick Bauernschmitt, the top senior boy with 30 points. The top junior boy with 30 points was Matthew Hebert, who had 30 points, four ahead of Valour`s

Charles Osborne. The top junior girl was Valour’s Sophie Warren, with 30 points, with Opeongo’s Kathleen Barr the runner-up at 28 points. ADHS’s Evan Bissonnette was the top midget boy with 30 points, followed by teammate Cameron Shepherd with 22. The many top four finishes meant a large contingent of ADHS students competed at the Eastern Ontario championships, then the East Regionals. As well, several ADHS athletes qualified for the Ontario track championships.

We are truly blessed to live in a small, caring community. Heartfelt thank you to Jamie and Angie for opening up your home, and to Kareen Lepine for helping feed the family between visitations at the funeral home. Helena Ellen McCallum Wright August 5, 1943 – June 4, 1996 Many things have changed since you were taken away from us 20 years ago, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is our love for you. We miss you every day but know that you have been by our side and supported us during happy times, new adventures or difficult struggles that we overcame. Your strength made us strong, your trust gave us faith, your love made us into the people we are today. As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into years, the emptiness in our lives without you still remains. Life went on but it was a lot harder without you. You will be forever in our hearts and will always be our guardian angel. They say there is a reason, They say that time we heal; But neither time nor reason Will Change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times We have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. Loving memories last forever. Woodlawn church to host concert for Arnprior’s Syrian refugees Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

St. Thomas Anglican Church in Woodlawn is hosting a benefit concert for a local Syrian refugee family this Saturday, June 4. The proceeds raised at the event will go to Project Arnprior Welcome (PAW) in support of a Syrian family living in Arnprior. “Our parish wanted to do something to help the Syrian refugees,” said Carolyn Beeton. “We’re hoping we pack the church full and have some fun and raise some money for the family in Arnprior.” The concert will feature local musicians, including 12-year-old Teaghan Maloney and Beeton’s daughter Jennifer Maitland. Olivia Charlebois and Rosemary and Terry Gone will also perform, as will Stephan Nesrallah, one of the event organizers. “I’m really happy this is happening and I’m happy we’re bringing refugees into our country,” said Nesrallah, whose heri-

tage is Syrian. “We’ve got a pretty good evening of music. It’s going to be lots of fun.” Nesrallah said the benefit concert will help the family living in Arnprior and hopes many people from the area will attend the event. “Hopefully we can get more people involved and hopefully the community will see it as a positive thing,” he said. The benefit concert takes place June 4 beginning at 7 p.m. St Thomas Anglican Church at 3794 Woodkilton Rd., Woodlawn. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at Dunrobin Meat and Grocery or at the door. Baked goods will also be available. ‘FUN EVENING’

“If we get 100 people we’ll make $1,000 and that would be great,” said Beeton. “We’re supporting the musicians and supporting a good cause. It will be a fun evening in our own community.” For more information, visit facebook.com/stthomaswoodlawn.

How Suite it is for pancake lovers An innovative pancake fundraiser sponsored and hosted recently by the “good folks” at Island View Retirement Suites was a huge success. So reports Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, the beneficiary of the event. Island View served free pancakes April 13, with each one eaten translating into $1 donated to the Seniors at Home. Thanks to the tastiness of the pancakes and the appetites of those taking part, at least 500 pancakes were consumed. As well a goodwill jar was made available and $355 was raised by the generous and appreciative pancake-lovers. LIZ WALL/SUBMITTED In all, Seniors at ‘More Syrup Please’: Andre Pilon generously donated his homemade syrup for the Home received $855 pancake fundraiser. With him, from left, are Island View life enrichment co-ordinator in the fundraiser. Eden Boytel, in-town driver Nancy Peck and culineery services director Wendy Crego.

EDEN BOYTEL/ SUBMITTED

The local Red Hats group showed up in support of the fundraiser.

Though the event was free to seniors and guests, the public was very generous with $355 donated for Seniors at Home in a goodwill jar.

Crossing your fingers made things right when telling a lie Mother put her hand on my shoulder and looked me square in the eye. I was about to head out to school, and I knew exactly what she was going to say, so I put my hands behind my back and crossed my fingers. I had it on good authority that if you were about to tell a lie, crossing your fingers made things right. “Now don’t you and Velma go walking in those ditches of water on the way home from school. It’s still too cold, and you’ll come with a death of the cold, and we’ll have to call Mrs. Beam and you know what that means: the onion treatment.” With my fingers knitted behind my back, I assured her we would stay clear of the ditches, knowing full well that Velma and I, once we got rid of our brothers and sisters, would do what we did just about every day coming home from the Northcote School. The ditches still had water from the spring run-off, and heavy rains for several days made them look like little streams, and were too inviting to be ignored. As soon as

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

the coast was clear, Velma and I headed behind a cluster of cedars, peeled off our shoes and stockings, crammed them into our book bags, and tucked our skirts into the elastic legs of our navy blue fleece lined bloomers. Making sure no one was on the Northcote Side Road, we squealed with sheer joy as our bare feet hit the water. The grass underfoot was like silk, and, of course, there was never any garbage thrown in the ditches back then, and we sloshed along at our heart’s content, heading from the side road from the school, almost to where our lanes began. Not once did I think of Mother’s words, as I left for school in the

morning. After all, I had my fingers crossed. By the time we reached our long lane, we had run out of water in the ditches, and we reluctantly had to abandon what we considered the utmost joy, walking barefoot in the water-filled ditches of the Northcote Side Road. Our book bags hung from our shoulders, and we reluctantly left the ditches as we neared our lane, which was just before the Thom’s, gingerly stepping onto the dirt road and heading for the cluster of cedars behind the rail fence. We sat on the big rock and let the sun dry our legs, which were now the colour of beets freshly pulled from the garden, and still dripping wet

from the water in the ditches. Our legs had to be dried completely before we could put on our long stockings and shoes. And Velma and I laughed and delighted in the conspiracy of the whole escapade. Knowing perfectly well, as long as the ditches held the water, we would repeat our adventure. We couldn’t spend too much time getting back into our stockings and shoes, or our mothers would be suspicious when we didn’t arrive home when they expected us. After all, it was only three-and-ahalf miles between the Northcote School and our farms, and so we had to be quick about it. I tore down our long lane like someone possessed, and the last I saw of Velma, she was already at their mailbox. I wasn’t that far behind my sister and brothers, tearing into the house out of breath, and heading right upstairs as I always did to get out of my school clothes, passing Mother who was busy at the Findlay Oval getting supper ready for the table. I kept my fingers crossed as usual, just in case she questioned me

about walking in the water-filled ditches. My stockings were damp, so I draped them over the chair near my bed, tucked my not too dry shoes under the washstand, and headed downstairs in my play clothes. “I bet you and Velma walked the ditches on your way home,” my hateful brother Emerson said at the supper table. I dropped my fork, put my hands behind my back with my fingers crossed, and denied it vehemently. Mother was too busy filling our plates to take notice, as I shot daggers at Emerson. My beloved sister Audrey vowed she saw Velma and me walking on the Northcote Side Road all the way home from school, and we were nowhere near the ditches. She had her hands behind her back, and I knew, without a doubt, her fingers were crossed. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Choral Delights to kick off OV Music Festival season

TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND

Recycle for pets The Arnprior Humane Society is holding an Electronic Recycling collection as a fundraiser until June 17, items can be dropped off at the shelter at 490 Didak Dr. Promoting the drive at Saturday’s annual yard sale are society volunteers Denise Ringrose and Cheryl Robinson.

The Ottawa Valley Music Festival season, which includes a concert in Arnprior Aug. 7, opens this Sunday, June 5 in Eganville with the third annual Festival of Choirs. Choral Delights will feature the Deep River Choral Group and the Ottawa Valley Music Festival Chorus in an afternoon of glorious singing, as the two groups perform jazz, gospel, folk, classical and Broadway melodies. Where else can you expect to hear a program so varied it includes music by George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Cole Porter, Paul Simon, Arnold Scoenberg and Carl Nygard Jr.? Bittersweet Gallery backs Ovarian cancer walk Burnstown’s Bittersweet Gallery hosts its annual spring open house this Saturday, June 4 with a fundraiser in support of the fight against ovarian cancer. The fundraiser for this September’s Ovarian Cancer Walk for Hope is held in conjunction with the launch of the 2016 collection of Montreal jewellery artist/designer Anne Marie Chagnon. Ovarian cancer is Canada’s most fatal women’s cancer. It is often overlooked and under-diagnosed and there is no screening test. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed in late stages, resulting in five-year survival rates of less than 30 per cent. Ten-to-15 per cent of the most common type of ovarian cancer is hereditary due to mutations in the genes passed through the family, either the father’s or mother’s side. Bittersweet Gallery owner Cheryl Babineau donates 10 per cent of Chagnon sales to Ovarian Cancer Canada, a charity she has chosen to support as the daughters of her husband, sculptor Richard Gill, are genetically at high risk. Chagnon describes her latest

collection as: “A universe of volcanic gentleness - an ode to nature with hand-sculpted pewter, gold or bronze layered swirling pools at times evoking a sense of an Aurora Borealis. Charcoal relief, black soot, exploding stars and reflecting lakes of enameled metals as well as dusk inspired shades combine with volcanic landscapes.” In her own words: “Social pressure is high. I fit in but not at the expense of my personality. Sometimes I disturb, but I always express and affirm myself with the passion to invent adornments to make you beautiful, as strong and remarkable as you are confident and proud.” Gill will also open his studio, where visitors can preview some intriguing current works in progress for his show in the fall. It’s also a good opportunity to discuss custom work or sign up for a workshop in clay-relief. Bittersweet Gallery represents more than 50 Canadian artists in a vast array of media of which there will be many new works also. At the June 4 event, refreshments will be served and there will live music and draws to win a necklace

donated by Chagnon, as well as a relief sculpture provided by Gill and painting by Burnstown artist John Robert Bradley. The open house and fundraiser for the Ovarian cancer walk runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more details. visit www.burnstown.ca/bittersweet.

Helen Schefter of the Arnprior and District Food Bank accepts a donation from the Arnprior Legion-Knights of Columbus euchre challenge from Knight John Wagner, left, and the Legion’s Bob Adkins and Dan Lynch.

Monthly Column – May 2016 Not news, but as I’ve previously stated, the Liberal Government dipped into your pocket once again—raising electricity rates on May 1st. The on-peak rate now stands at 18 cents per kWh compared to 4.3 cents when the Liberals came into office in 2003. I think it is more than safe to say that no line item in your household or small-business budget has risen faster than the rate of electricity. Moreover, Finance Minister Charles Sousa had the audacity to state in the Legislature that hydro rates were actually coming down.

As if people weren’t hurting enough, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Glen Murray, took some more outlandish positions over the past number of weeks. He recently stated that as part of their cap-and-trade scheme and climate change plan he would: give every building in the province an energy retrofit, set aggressive targets to have 1.7 million electric cars on the road by 2024, and phase out natural gas in the province. Let’s start with his plan to retrofit every single building in the province of Ontario. You have to wonder where someone’s thinking is with a statement such as that: does he even have any idea how many buildings there are in the province? The cost of retrofitting every one of them would not be in the billions, but in the tens to hundreds of billions. On the issue of electric vehicles, he obviously has not spent much time in rural Ontario to see how far people have to drive on a daily basis. Auto industry spokespeople—in a polite way—essentially said that the Minister was out to lunch; that his targets didn’t even begin to meet the test of plausibility: 2024 is fewer than eight years away. Ontario currently only has between 5,000 to 6,000 electric cars on the road.

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

While I get calls about the skyrocketing increases to hydro rates each-and-every week—the week the rates went up I had two interesting exchanges with constituents. One was with a gentleman who stated, categorically, that the price of electricity was literally tearing families apart in this province. I also spoke with a woman who volunteers at the Eganville Food Bank who stated that usage was up 30 percent and that they actually ran out of food the previous month. She further stated that when they inquired as to why people were using the food bank, the overwhelming response by recipients was that their options were either getting their hydro cut off, or paying their bill and relying on the food bank.

Last week in a leaked Cabinet document, Glen Murray stated that Ontario would be phasing out natural gas as an energy source. Additionally, people wouldn’t be able to heat their homes with it. Once again, he must fail to recognize that 76 percent of Ontario’s heating comes from natural gas. We also have 19 gas-fired power plants with a capacity of around 10,000 MW. If you phase out natural gas under his plan, you would have to heat with electricity or some other non-fossil fuel source. According to well-respected people in the energy sector, Ontario would need an additional 80,000 MW of capacity—it would basically mean tripling what we have today. Where does Glen Murray think we will get that extra capacity? He wants to shut down nuclear and natural gas. What’s left? Does he expect to get it from wind turbines that only operate 20 to 30 percent of the time and need to be backed up by a reliable source? Given that we already have among the highest prices for electricity—how high do you think hydro prices would be if Glen Murray had his way? The one good thing about announcements from Glen Murray is that they are quickly followed by a reversal of some sort when it is pointed out to him by us in Opposition and stakeholders in the industry, that little of what he says makes sense. Minister Murray made many of these announcements in a speech to the Empire Club laying out details about his climate change plan. He finished his speech with these words: “So let’s have some courage. Let’s get up tomorrow and realize that we’re living in a different world.” If referring to himself, truer words were never spoken.

Watering may occur between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. each day and from only one connection. Midday is the hottest time of the day and the water is more likely to be wasted through evaporation when watering at this time. Watering from more than one connection simply uses too much water at once. A significant amount of new grass or sod is exempted from these provisions for one week. Any other violations of the by-law may result in a fine. Municipal staff will be enforcing the Watering Restrictions.
