Coun. Heather Lang receives the official Relay 150 baton from wood carver Dub Juby during a recent recreation committee meeting. Lang holds snow because snowshoeing will be part of the June 24 relay. Missing are Nicci Murray, Jason Marshall and Karla Blemkie.

“It’s a great group of volunteers doing a great job and it’s going to be a great day,” he said. The relay will include runners, swimmers, even snowshoers (snow is hidden under hay since winter) and starts at 8 a.m. in Sand Point. It will end at Waba Museum with a big party for all age groups. Madawaska Boulevard in Arnprior has a few interesting sidewalk challenges for pedestrians. But don’t expect the municipality to spend a lot of money anytime soon. Few use them to reach businesses on the southern end of town.

Derek Dunn/Metroland

BURNS COMMUNICATIONS Sidewalk falls short of resident’s expectation DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

When Dave Russett found out he couldn’t get a newspaper delivered to his house because the sidewalks don’t go that far, it got him to thinking. Madawaska Boulevard is owned and maintained by the County of Renfrew. But the sidewalks are the responsibility of the Town of Arnprior, which is in the midst of a multimillion dollar revitalization of the downtown. The most striking feature of which is the wide, impressive sidewalks. Yet on the south side of the Madawaska River it is, suffice to say, a dog’s breakfast. Some spots along the boulevard have sidewalks, others don’t; some seems to peter out without reason, others end abruptly, as though the construction crew ran out of concrete.

Unfortunately for Russett, his home is at the southern entrance to town, on Madawaska between Decosta Street and Herrick Drive, far from the last remnants of a sidewalk. “I was told they can’t deliver papers out that far,” Russett said. “It’s pretty dangerous without a sidewalk. They call this part the gateway to the Upper Ottawa Valley. “The poor gate is looking pretty rubble-double now.” He said anyone wanting to walk or wheelchair to PJs Restaurant, the animal shelter, or other businesses at that end of town would put themselves in grave danger. Mayor David Reid said discussion of extending sidewalks on one or both sides of Madawaska Boulevard came up during the last term of council, about six or seven years ago. Nothing came of it.

The cost of a little-used sidewalk, about $200,000, outweighs the benefit. He is aware that on the west side, from Bridge Street up to Mama Rosa Restaurant, the sidewalk is difficult to decipher. The entrance to businesses is much wider than the green space is long, in many spots. On the east side it is a little more coherent, but comes to an odd halt in green space beside Arnprior Chrysler. It isn’t the best situation, he said, but it is possible for residents from the neighbourhoods on either side of the road to safely reach a sidewalk and walk into the downtown core.

The upside is that as development occurs, such as at the new MacEwan gas station being built, sidewalks could become more prominent. “There will be opportunities as development occurs to extend sidewalks,” Reid said. “(Madawaska Boulevard) is zoned highway commercial. So it typically doesn’t have sidewalks. “And there are ways for residents to get into town.” Others on social media would like to see sidewalks on Baskin Drive, near a retirement residence, primary school, and future primary school. There are no sidewalks to the Caruso Street park either.

Arnprior area flood victims learn of funding program DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Flood victims have until mid September to submit claims to the government if they want funding assistance. A recent meeting offered residents a chance to hear from representatives of various organizations. Everything from funding assistance for clean up to coping with mental health issues was discussed June 1 at Sand Point Golf Course. The Township of McNab/Braeside-hosted event saw about 20 residents in attendance. First to speak was Mayor Tom Peckett. He said some residences still have sandbags on them. Owners who want them taken away should bring the bags to the roadway. Also, dumpsters will remain “for as long as needed” in spots throughout the township for use. Engineers are studying a road in Rhoddy’s Bay hit hard by the flooding last month, he added. It may need a complete reconstruction. At the meeting’s end, Peckett thanked volunteer firefighters and Chief Dave Hartwick for the long hours of contributing to the clean up. He also vowed to pressure the Ontario government to partner with Quebec and dam operators. Floods will happen again, he said, so finding a better way to deal with them is criti-

Derek Dunn/Metroland

Mayor Tom Peckett introduces the guest speakers at a recent meeting organized by the Township of McNab/Braeside to help guide affected residents through governmental assistance programs. cal. “I’m going to take that on myself,” he said. “This isn’t the first time this area’s been flooded.” Up next was Steve Seller from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. He explained how the new Disaster Recovery Assistance program works. It has changed considerably since the area’s landslide of 2009. “The eligibility is the same but the rollout is different,” Seller said. “The last time it took a long time to declare

a disaster. It’s done much more quickly now.” Fourteen municipalities in the county have been declared disasters. That means primary homeowners have 120 days to submit an application for recovery assistance. Seasonal residences, meaning cottages that are not lived in all year round, do not qualify. The government will pay for new furnaces, fridges, and other large appliances - not electronics or smaller

personal items. The aim is to make the home functional and safe. Seller said to document everything that might be eligible. Keep receipts and invoices for things like hotel stays, too. External parts of the home are not eligible. Landscaping, retaining walls, and partially damaged driveways are ineligible. He said to obtain an email or some correspondence from the insurance company saying they won’t pay for things like stoves, water tanks and other big items. It will need to be submitted with the application, along with proof of home ownership, and photo identification such as a driver’s licence. Lost wages won’t be covered, but any work the owner does — such as ripping out the basement — can be claimed at minimum wage. The deadline is Sept. 11. Before mailing the application, be sure to check that a signature appears in two spots. Payouts depend on the complexity and completeness of the application, Seller said. He pointed to the website http:// www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page13722.aspx for application forms. They are also available at the township offices. The Red Cross was at the meeting to say its permanent reception centres (one is in Constance Bay) offer clean kits and hygiene kits, along with information on coping with stress. It is also involved in fundraising and providing

$600 per household upon successful completion of an online application. The Office of the Fire Marshal Emergency Management warned to give homes time to completely dry out before rebuilding. Wait four to six months in many cases. Rebuilding too soon means mould could stay, making people sick, then it will need to be torn down and rebuilt again. Also beware that some disaster restoration companies are less than reputable. Talk to insurance agencies and chambers of commerce to find out the good ones. The Electrical Safety Authority said that if water went above the outlets, it’s important to hire an electrical contractor. Don’t turn anything on just because the house is dry. Anything electrical that went under water — propane tank, dryers, and more — needs to be inspected. Renfrew county’s health unit talked about well testing. Passing one test is not enough. Residents should get three tests done a year, at different seasons, to make sure the water is safe. Also, if the septic tank was underwater it is contaminated. If toilets won’t flush, or are slow to flush, or gurgling, testing is needed. The experts were asked if boating is safe. They said to be very careful; someone found a picnic table still floating, even a propane tank.

Town receives accessibility award On May 25, the Town of Arnprior was presented with the David C. Onley Award for Leadership in Accessibility. The award was presented to the town’s chief administrative officer, Michael Wildman. The award was created in 2014 to recognize Ontarians who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving accessibility for people with disabilities. The Town of Arnprior received the Champion Award. “Over the past four years, accessibility has driven many upgrades and design decisions that have taken place in the Town of Arnprior,” says a press release. “Significant accessibility enhancements can be seen at municipal facilities and public spaces throughout the town, which results in a community with fewer barriers and more inclusivity. Recently, the town undertook an ambitious two-year downtown revitalization project focused on enhanced accessibility measures for both the public and private realms. To persuade businesses to become more

accessible, the town also pioneered a new downtown accessibility incentive grant. The grant will create greater inclusion for patrons and employees, and is a key element in Arnprior’s accessibility agenda.” Mayor David Reid said: “The Town of Arnprior is honoured to receive this very important recognition for the efforts that the town has made in advancing an improved accessibility agenda. The award speaks volumes to the efforts and commitment made by town staff, our accessibility advisory committee and council.” Wildman said: “There are so many people who contributed to making this award a reality, from our engineers who made the downtown designs more accessible, our recreation staff who have improved their facilities, our community services branch team who work with businesses to help make their businesses more accessible, or our finance staff who have found ways to make the vision a reality.”

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

June 2017 By now I am sure you have all either heard an advertisement or received some kind of communication (paid by you, the taxpayers of Ontario) telling you about the Liberal’s so-called Fair Hydro Plan. The Liberals have spent millions of dollars telling you about a plan that they say will save you an additional 17 percent on your hydro bill. It should be pointed out that under the plan you need not do anything; the reduction will come to you without any need for you to apply. Given that is the case, there should be no need for the Liberals to spend millions of dollars telling you so. The ads are being disseminated across the province not to inform you, but to somehow convince you that the Liberal government is your friend and reducing your electricity costs. This so-called Fair Hydro Plan is actually doing nothing to reduce electricity costs. What it is doing is refinancing the entire mess so that your monthly payments are reduced, but ensuring that in the long run you—and your children—will pay much more. It is akin to taking out a mortgage and then doubling the amortization period: looks good in the front end but in the long run you are paying a lot more. Recently the Financial Accountability Office released their assessment of the Liberal’s Fair Hydro Plan. This is not me speaking now, it is Stephen LeClair, the Financial Accountability Officer. Under the so-called Fair Hydro Plan your bills will go down by a further 17 percent this year and will increase at the rate of inflation over the next four years. However, starting in 2021 your bills will increase by an average of 6.8 percent annually until 2027. Furthermore, after 2027 it is projected that they will rise four percent more per year than if the government had done nothing. What this amounts to is that—even if the government had a balanced budget for each of the next 29 years this plan would still cost a net $21 billion more. This number is arrived at by taking the $45 billion cost to taxpayers minus the overall savings to electricity ratepayers of $21 billion. The Financial Accountability Officer further estimates that if the budget is not balanced for each of the next 29 years, the cost could increase to as high as $93 billion. I know these big numbers can make one’s eyes gloss over, but it does need to be pointed out that this Liberal government is prepared to saddle you—and future generations—with an additional debt of up to $93 billion on the hope that it will buy them past the next provincial election. It just goes to show that when it comes to your money, there is no limit to Liberal misuse. The water continues to recede and I know that everyone affected is looking forward to getting their lives back to normal, yet much work remains to be done. One thing is for certain, the flood of 2017 is an event that will not soon be forgotten. It has been more than a little rainy over the past several weeks. Let’s hope the weather becomes more seasonal soon. Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, June 8, 2017 7

OPINION

Connected to your community

A trillium by any other name Changing parties in politics usually never works out too well. There are a few exceptions, such as former Liberal MP and NDP provincial premier Bob Rae, but normally switching parties as an elected politician is a prescription for defeat and political oblivion in the ensuing election. So it will be interesting to follow the happenings in the new Kanata-Carleton provincial riding in next year’s election and see if former Progressive Conservative MPP Jack MacLaren, now a member of the new Trillium Party, will be re-elected or not. His participation in the election for the Trillium Party should have an impact on the PC vote in the riding. Whether he will be re-elected, just split the Tory vote, or have minimal impact remains to be seen. The new Kanata-Carleton riding is more urban than the existing Carleton-Mississippi Mills and this may reduce conservative strength somewhat, with or without Jack MacLaren’s ejection from the PC caucus and his switch to the ultra conservative Trillium Party. The Liberals may seize this opportunity of discord among conservative forces to run a strong candidate who might just sneak into office thanks to a vote split in the right-of-centre

ranks. Some insight might be found from the name of MacLaren’s new party affiliation, the Trillium Party. Trilliums, specifically white trilliums, have been the official flower for Ontario since 1937. If grown from seed, it takes a trillium up to two years just for the seed to germinate and then takes another five to seven years for the plant to bloom. In other words, a long process and very similar, we would suggest, to the future of the new party. If the Trillium Party were to “germinate” in two years and were to “bloom” in only five to seven years, we would rank that as an amazing political story. It is also known that if the leaves and flower of a trillium are picked, the plant will die as it will lack any means to produce the energy needed to survive the cold blasts of winter. If MacLaren fails to win for the Trillium Party in the upcoming election, the party may die just like a picked trillium, lacking the means to produce the energy needed to survive the blasts of the political weather in this province. MacLaren’s decision to switch parties is a story that promises an interesting ending come election season.

Parking lot needed Blind people have a right to read for accessibility To the editor:

The additions to the park sound lovely. Taking away some parking doesn’t. I use a walker to go anywhere beyond a few steps. I would love to go the Sunday concerts. I would love to go to the park - period. However I would have to go several hours ahead to get a parking space down the hill. And there is no guarantee of a space being available even then. If I park at the top, I cannot walk back up the hill to my car. And I am sure that I am not the only one with this

problem. There are many seniors and others who need a walker or a cane. I realize that there are space limitations on expanding the parking lot. Surely someone can come up with a solution to this problem. And while I am on the subject of handicaps, how many storeowners have a door that won’t open with the button? I know it looks like you care if we come in to buy but in reality, there are many that don’t work. Jean McCarron Arnprior

To the editor: Everyone has the right to read. No matter where you call home, we all have the right to read and access information so that we can be truly included in our community, society and culture. The problem is, the right to read isn’t upheld universally. In 2017, community members with print disabilities like blindness still have very limited access to books. In honour of National AccessAbility Week (May 28 to June 3), I’m saying here and now that this needs to change. There are more than three million Canadians who can’t read traditional print because of a disability. These people rely on alternative formats like braille, audio and accessible e-text to be able to read books, newspapers and other published content. But only a small fraction of the books printed in Canada each year are made available in these accessible formats.

And remarkably, CNIB (the Canadian National Institute for the Blind) has remained the largest producer of accessible books in Canada for nearly a century, despite being a charity. Imagine not being able to walk into a library or bookstore and pick up any book you want. Imagine being in high school or university and not being able to read the textbook you’re given. Imagine hearing your friends talking about the latest best seller and knowing you can’t read it. That’s not accessibility. That’s exclusion. What Canada needs is a long-term strategy to ensure equitable access to books for all citizens, regardless of disability. This National AccessAbility Week, I hope we can have this conversation together and ask our government to create a solution to ensure everyone’s right to read is upheld.

Council won’t submit questions to staff before meetings DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A proposal meant to better prepare Town of Arnprior staff prior to council meetings getting underway was shot down almost unanimously. Coun. Dan Lynch introduced a motion that would have council members “pre-consult with staff in advance when they have a list of questions or concerns which they intend to ask or bring forward” during a meeting. He said it would be a professional courtesy meant to increase co-operation. At times, council will ask staff a question during a meeting for which staff don’t have an answer. The issue will be deferred until at

least the next meeting — two weeks later — when staff have a response. Or, worse, council will vote on the issue before all their questions are answered. However, the majority on council voted against the motion. Reeve Walter Stack doesn’t want to be forced, by law, to provide questions beforehand. There is nothing stopping members from talking to staff before meetings. Some do with regularity. Coun. Frank Dugal said time constraints could prevent getting the questions to staff before a meeting. Coun. Lynn Grinstead and Stack said sometimes questions arise during discussions. Council agreed to maintain the status quo.

Arnprior finds answer to cemeteries reaching capacity DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Arnprior is one of the few municipalities that owns cemeteries. So now that both the Albert Street and Malloch Road sites are running out of space, it is town hall that has to find a solution. The answer is to install six columbaria at Malloch, similar to those at Albert. A columbarium holds urns with a deceased’s cremated remains. The site will be located to the south of the entrance, within a mature treed area. (Roots

make it difficult for digging graves.) It will contain a contemplative seating area and garden, wooden benches, low stone wall, paved and wooden walkways and stepping-stones. The entire project will cost $225,000 to $345,000, depending on council’s chosen size for each columbaria. Each niche (space for an urn) will cost just over $1,000. There will be 96 to 144 niches in each columbarium. Revenue will be between $295,000 and $443,000. Net revenue to the town will be between $70,000 and almost $98,000. That money will likely go back into maintenance costs.

OPP to carry naloxone kits The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will provide naloxone to all frontline members and to those in designated specialized units. Each frontline officer is being issued a kit with two doses of naloxone nasal spray while on duty, while members of selected specialized units, such as Drug Enforcement Units and Community Street Crime Units, will each be issued a personal kit. The use of personal protective equipment will be mandatory while conducting suspected drug searches, seizures and/or sampling to help ensure the safety of OPP officers. Frontline members will be required to wear protective equipment including a respiratory mask, safety glasses or goggles, nitrile gloves and long sleeve shirt or jacket. Health Canada testing determined fentanyl was present in 114 OPP seizures in 2016 from the mainly rural communities the OPP serves, demonstrating it is an emerging and ongoing concern in all parts of Ontario. Testing results for 2017 are not yet available but the number of seizures with fentanyl present appears to be similar to 2016 levels. The primary purpose of the naloxone is for use if an officer is exposed, however, if there is a life-threatening situation and emergency medical services are not immediately available, officers

will be trained to use it on a member of the public. The naloxone kits are an additional tool that OPP officers will be able to use to help keep our communities safe. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can reverse an opioid overdose for about 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the strength of the opioid.

Domestic violence charges laid Arnprior and Renfrew OPP investigated seven domestic disputes during the past week. One male in Renfrew was charged with forcible confinement, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; another male was charged with fail to comply with an undertaking and breach of probation. No other criminal offences took place.

12 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, June 8, 2017

I have been an avid birder since the age of five. As a child, among my favourite birding spots were the open fields east of Arnprior. To get there, I walked (with great trepidation) across the Canadian Pacific Railway trestle on the Madawaska River. I recall one late May outing around 50 years ago when on my walk through the fields (now submerged courtesy of the Arnprior Generating Station) I found no fewer than five Loggerhead Shrike nests, each containing nestlings. Including adults, I saw around 25 shrikes that day. Little did I know that half a century later such a feat would be impossible not only locally but anywhere in Ontario. There are two species of shrikes in Ontario. Northern Shrikes are just that, for they nest in the Hudson Bay Lowlands and only occur in our area from about Thanksgiving until early April. Loggerhead Shrikes were once rather common summer residents in southern Ontario, appearing from late March and staying until they migrated south in August. Over the past three decades Loggerhead Shrikes have become increasingly rare, so rare that they now reside on the Endangered Species list. Shrikes are fascinating birds. They are grey and white, robin-sized birds with a black mask and wings, and sport the meathook bill of a hawk but the legs and feet of a songbird. They are predatory and have the unusual habit of impaling their prey on thorns or broken branches before eating them, a behaviour that gave rise to the name: “Butcher Bird.” Northern Shrikes are slightly larger than Loggerheads, and have a longer bill with a pale base and larger meathook tip. They also have barring on

their breasts, a feature that only juvenile Loggerheads display. The only bird that either species of shrike even remotely resembles is the Northern Mockingbird. That species is also grey, black, and white, but lacks a meathook bill. While Northern Shrikes still regularly occur in winter, Loggerhead Shrikes have vanished from our area. A number of factors including habitat loss and increased vehicle use of country roads have contributed to their demise. Loggerheads eat grasshoppers and other insects, and often fly low over roads. Because of constant “improvement” of country roads as farmland becomes converted to residential land, there are many more cars travelling at high speeds on those roads than there were fifty years ago, and shrikes are likely among the casualties of that change. When found in our area, Loggerhead Shrikes preferentially nested in Hawthorns. Not only did the thorns of these shrubs provide sites for impaling prey, they also rendered the shrike nests safe from virtually all predators. In other regions of Ontario where Loggerhead Shrikes nested, in particular the alvars (limestone flats adorned with thin soil) near Kemptville, Napanee, and Carden, Loggerheads placed their nests in Eastern Red Cedars. Loggerhead Shrikes still nest on those alvars but today only around 20 pairs in total are known to be present. Efforts including captive breeding programmes and the protection of nest sites are being made to stop Loggerhead Shrikes from slipping into extinction. It would be indeed wonderful if some day once again in our area Butcher Birds decorated thorns with their victims. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

SEPTIC SYSTEMS The River Town Saints release their debut self-titled album on June 9. The popular country band is comprised of Jeremy Bortot, Jordan Potvin, Chris Labelle, Chris McComb and Daniel DiGiacomo. Potvin and McComb call Arnprior home.

River Town Saints release first album June 9 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

A little bit sure does go along way. After years of dedication and hard work, the River Town Saints (RTS) are releasing their debut self-titled album on June. 9. Two of its members, Chris McComb and Jordan Potvin, live in Arnprior. The album has been in the works since they were signed two-and-a-half years ago. “It’s been a long time coming,” said McComb. “It’s going to be some RTS favourites with some new songs that sound a little different than on the radio. Let’s call them old-school, vintage country rock.” Potvin says the entire group is excited to release the album. “It’s been a long time in the making,” said Potvin in an email. “We’ve worked so hard on these songs and can’t wait to share it with our fans. It’ll be really fun to see which songs become the fan favourites.” There are nine songs on the album including earlier hits like A Little Bit Goes A Long Way, Cherry Bomb and most recently Bonfire which went Top 10 on country radio. Then there is the party anthem Friday Night about treating every event/party like it’s a Friday night party. “It’s kind of like rock and roll with a banjo,” said McComb when asked how to describe some

of the new songs. Their upcoming single, Woke Up Like This, which hits the airwaves June 7, is co-written by lead singer Chris Labelle, along with Gavin Slate and Travis (T Buck) Wood, and is described as an incredibly catchy, uplifting song “This song is about spending the night with a girl you just met at a bar — but this is no onenight stand. In this scenario, it’s about wanting to get to know her, dancing with her, laughing with her, talking to her. When you wake up in the morning it’s obvious she’s special and you can see a future with her,” said Labelle in a news release. The record also includes new songs such as I Hope You’re Driving, about driving in anticipation to meet up with a love interest, and Hungover It, a song that laments hitting the bottle a little too hard and attempting to turn over a new leaf upon waking up with “nothing to show for it,” says the release. Local show The Renfrew Fair recently announced that RTS will be the headliner on Friday, Sept. 8. Singer-guitarists McComb, who grew Arnprior, has fond memories of the Renfrew Fair. “My grandfather used to take me to the Renfrew Fair. There was a merry-go-round with motorcycles and he kept giving me tokens,” said McComb. He says he can’t wait to play at the fair. “We get to play in front of a hometown crowd. It’s cool, but more nerve wracking because there

will be more people I know,” said McComb. “Fall fairs always feel homey to me too, the smell of the food, the lights of the rides, it feels natural.” Drummer Jordan is also from Arnprior and says playing the Renfrew Fair is really exciting. “It’s such a rare moment for us to play close to home. I mean we have a good amount of friends and family out this way, and they’re always checking in to see how the band is doing,” said Potvin. “So now instead of just taking about it, they can come to see how much we’ve developed as a band and what the show is like now. It’s going to be an awesome fair this year.” The group recently opened for Kip Moore and Tim Hicks. The summer will be busy as they prepare for numerous music festivals such as Red River Ex in Manitoba, the Trackside Music Festival in London and Lucknow Music in Fields. Tractors are a familiar sight on Lanark County roadways, but Pakenham man Mike Thompson isn’t using his to plow fields, but rather to raise funds for a Franktown woman and her family. On June 10, Thompson will embark on his Drive for Jillian initiative across Ontario from his workshop in Pakenham. More than two years ago, he was touched by the story of Jillian O’Connor, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer while four months pregnant with her third child, Declan, who turned two in February. With a specialized chemotherapy treatment and a mastectomy, Jillian gave birth to a healthy baby boy, but learned soon after the incurable form of cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, liver, bones and most recently, her brain. A total stranger, he knew he wanted to help. “I saw a CTV Ottawa interview with Jill and it tweaked my interest a little bit as my grandson’s name is Declan as well,” he said during an interview at his Pakenham area workshop recently, as he and Jillian watched the three children play nearby. “She’s such a strong woman.” For his June 10 trip, Thompson is planning on driving through Ottawa, past the Parliament buildings, down through Winchester and Chesterville and across to Kingston and Belleville, making his way to Bancroft and then back home via Pembroke. For more information on the Drive for Jillian, visit www.driveforjill.ca.

Arnprior Dragon Boat Club seeks new paddlers for competitions Looking for a different summer sport? Why not try dragon boat paddling! The Arnprior Dragon Boat Club (ADBC) is looking for new paddlers to come try out the sport. The club has three crews paddling again this season - a competitive crew which is recruiting fit individuals who paddle three times a week Monday and Wednesday from

7 to 8 p.m. and Sunday mornings; and compete in about four festivals each season. If you simply love being out on the water, having fun and getting a good work out, there are two recreational crews that will start paddling as soon as the water levels subside at the Arnprior Marina. One crew paddles Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. and the other crew paddlers Tuesday and Thursday

from 7 to 8 p.m. The cost to join for the season is $150 and crews usually paddle until Thanksgiving. Life jackets and paddles are provided by the Club and no experience is required. If you simply wish to come out and try paddling, the cost per session is $10. If you would like more information about paddling, please contact the club at arnpriordragonboat@gmail.com.

Youth baseball makes its return

The Arnprior Highlanders AA Peewees and the Gatineau AA Tyrants Rouge line up for the singing of the national anthem as part of the opening ceremonies to celebrate the return of baseball to Arnprior. The team had a busy start to the season, hosting four games in the last week. The boys have had competitive games featuring timely hitting and aggressive base running. They were still looking for their first win, then claimed two wins last weekend. They have shown potential and more practice time and game experience should translate into mid-season success.

Petition seeks to improve services for brain injured SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Whether it’s a stroke, brain tumour or concussion — it’s an issue that affects many Canadians. The Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley (OBIA) is asking the public to sign a petition that will help improve services for those affected and their families. The petition, which will be presented to the legislature in the fall, says brain injuries occur as a result of a motor vehicle accidents, assaults, workplace accidents, concussions, falls and illnesses such as stroke and many of these individuals face significant challenges obtaining appropriate services and securing affordable housing. June is Brain Injury Awareness Month so it’s a fitting time to introduce the petition, say officials. “We the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows: 1. Provide suitable affordable housing in the Champlain LHIN; 2. Develop more residential options (group homes, supported housing, specialized long term care units, a behavioural residential centre) in the Champlain LHIN and 3. Provide additional specialized support services specific to the needs of persons with a brain injury offered by staff with acquired brain injury training in the Champlain LHIN,” reads the petition. There are a number of locations within the Champlain LHIN where the petition can be found: Douglas: Douglas Grocery Horton: Horton Township Office Renfrew: Renfrew Public Library, The Warehouse McNab: McNab Township Office Arnprior: Arnprior Library, Arnprior Town Hall, Karen’s Hair Salon, Imperial Professional Alteration and Blast From the Past Antique Store

Almonte: Brenda’s New to You Store Pakenham: 5 Span Feed and Seed Eganville: Municipality office of Eganville, Eganville Country Store Pembroke: City of Pembroke office, Pembroke Library, Imperial Professional Alteration, Salvation Army Community Church “Every signature counts in our Champlain LHIN area,” says the association. “If people want copies of the petition to help out, they can get it at the locations mentioned and mail them back to: The Ottawa Valley Brain Injury Association at 211 Bronson Ave., Ottawa, Ont. K1R 6H5. Telephone 613-233-8303 email contact@ biaov.org.” During Brain Injury Awareness Month, brain injury associations across the country are putting a face to this epidemic through posters, events, and social media, #IamTheFaceofBrainInjury and #BIAM17. Hailey Harms is one of those faces. When Hailey was 16 years old, her competitive skating career was cut short after she sustained numerous concussions. Doctors told her she would never be able to skate again. The risk of a more serious brain injury and severe consequences was just too great. Hailey’s hopes and dreams for a skating career were crushed. When asked what she would like the public to know about brain injury, Hailey, now 19, stated,

“That it can happen to absolutely anybody, your neighbour, your mother, your daughter. All ages. Anyone.” Brain injury came close to Hailey again, when her high school friend, Evan, sustained a severe brain injury through a motor vehicle collision. When Hailey escorted Evan to his 2014 high school graduation, he was heading to university to study engineering. Three years have passed and he is working very hard to regain his ability to talk and walk. He dreams of returning to university and engineering, but his future is unclear. Two talented young people from the same community. Two brain injuries. Different causes. Different experiences. Different outcomes. “Brain injuries can range from mild to catastrophic, but all brain injuries can have lasting effects,” said Ruth Wilcock, executive director of OBIA. Lives are changed in an instant. Hopes and dreams are often put on the back burner as is the case with Hailey and Evan. Brain injury is 15 times more common than spinal cord injury, 30 times more common than breast cancer and 400 times more common than HIVAIDS. Brain injury is also the No. 1 cause of death and disability worldwide among children, youth and those under age 44.

Renfrew County residents face spring floods with strength of community Renfrew County has experienced some of the worst flooding in decades and the impact on residents has been severe in many cases. However, it also brought forward the very best of our community as they came together to support one another. Warden of the County of Renfrew Jennifer Murphy shared this: “I am so very proud and humbled by the tremendous acts of support I witnessed in the flood-impacted areas these past few weeks. Volunteers, neighbours, paramedics, firefighters, elected officials, municipal staff, and countless others came together, buckled down, and did what needed to be done. I am forever grateful to those that have given hours and days of their time to fill and stack sandbags, check on neighbours, help evacuate the elderly, and those who got informa-

tion out to residents. Thank you, each and every one of you. Your sense of community and selflessness will not be forgotten.” The warden stated that she knows that a lot of hard work has been done by so many, but that the recovery process will be long and difficult. She has shared the hash tag #OttawaValleyStrong on social media frequently in the last few weeks, and she says: “I think that says it all, we are resilient, and dedicated to making sure our community gets through this in the best possible way.” The waters have started to recede but Murphy hopes that every person impacted by the flooding is putting their own safety first. “As the flood waters drain away and the full impact of the flood damage is now being revealed, I want to really stress that everyone needs to put their own health

and safety first. Please use caution during the cleanup and consult professional help if you have safety concerns. If you need any information or are unsure where to turn, please call your local municipal office for assistance.” Residents looking for additional information on what to do during and after a flood can access the Renfrew County Flood Impact & Recovery document located on the County of Renfrew website. http://www.countyofrenfrew. on.ca/_documents/emergency/ management/RenfrewCountyFloodImpactRecovery.pdf The County of Renfrew will continue to post road closures and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry flood warnings to the county’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, and update the local media whenever possible.

Lisa Weagle, Canada’s world champion curling lead, approaches the links with the same grace and poise that she uses on the rinks. “I play both sports but am only good at one,” she quips and then proceeds to lead her golf team on to win the mixed team trophy. The annual Ottawa Valley Curling Association Golf Tournament was hosted jointly between the Arnprior Curling Club and the Arnprior Optimists at the Sand Point Golf Course on Sunday, May 2. Weagle, lead for Canada’s world champion “Holman” rink was a guest of honour with her husband, her coach, and manager. But even more than her rise to international recognition, Weagle appreciates curling as a life sport. “I started when I was eight and I can still be playing when I am 80,” she said. The concept of healthy Canadians is central to Sport Canada, of which Weagle is an employee, as well as Ontario’s Trillium Fund efforts in fostering active Ontarians.

Certainly, the Arnprior Curling Club makes every effort to make the sport available to young people through its Little Rocks program, seniors through Stick Curling events, and everything in between, including its Learn to Curl and Sunday afternoon drop-ins. The Arnprior Optimists sponsor a variety of active youth programs in the community, to encourage an attitude of active lifestyle. Certainly, Weagle is conscious of the community support required to provide everyone with recreational opportunities. “I have played at most of the rinks throughout the Ottawa Valley and I want to thank all the communities that helped us get this far,” she said. The theme of healthy active living was supported by many of the tournament’s sponsors, including platinum sponsor, Orchard View Retirement Residents. “Active living is key to our approach to retirement services,” stated representative, Julie Monroe. Winner of the ladies longest drive, as well as, the Orchard View team’s win of the OVCA Ladies Golf Trophy is testament that Orchard View staff practice what they preach. Henderson finishes T21 in Volvik Championship Brooke Henderson fired a low round 66 on Friday at the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to get as high as T10 during the action. She ended the tournament Sunday T21 for a $14,098 payday. Following her round on May 26, she spoke with media about her low score, saying she hadn’t shot that low in a few weeks.

“Before I teed off I knew the scores were really low and the cutline was really low as well, so I knew I needed to make a few birdies and I was able to make a couple early and that gave me a lot of momentum,” she said. “I fought back on the back 9 after a bad bogey on 14, I was able make two more coming in. So I’m really happy with 66 today. I haven’t shot that low in a

couple weeks. “It’s definitely a good feeling and hopefully I can back it up on the weekend.” Henderson had rounds of 71-66-72-68 for a 277 during the tournament, including a bogey-free round on Sunday. She finished just eight back of the eventual winner, Shanshan Feng, who ended with 6867-66-68 to win the $195,000 prize.

Did the first half of your golf season not go as well as you’d hoped? Did you have lots of ups and downs? Were you disappointed with your score cards? Have you developed some bad habits? Don’t worry if you’ve answered in the affirmative to all those questions; there’s still plenty of time to make a few adjustments that will boost your confidence on the green. Even though physical fitness is often a neglected element in golf, it is a key to obtaining good results on the course.

Poor preparation can lead to injury or back pain that will, unfortunately, stay with you throughout the season. Not enough practice sessions could also have a negative impact on your game, and those consistently disappointing results may undermine your confidence. Fortunately, not everything is lost. This is the perfect time to forge ahead and start the second half of the golf season on the right foot. Exercising, including daily stretching, will help you to improve your flexibility. SHALLA, Parnell In loving memory of a dear husband, father and grandpa who passed away June 10, 2015. Silent Tears The quiet darkness of the night, Brings out my greatest fears… Did you know how much you meant to me; Then I cry my silent tears, As I watched you in that little room, And I looked into your face, I saw that one I knew before, In another time and place, What I wouldn’t give to go back in time, For just a little while, So I could hear you laugh again. So I could see you smile, Now the memories are all that’s left, Such a permanent goodbye, And it seems as though they’ll never stop These silent tears I cry.

Forever remembered and forever loved, Mike and Betty

Always something to be done in the fields for Father

LIVING WITH DIABETES? LIVING WITH DID YOU KNOW… To check your blood sugar more often while on vacation, as it is the only way you’ll know if your blood sugar levels are in the target range. Blood glucose testing strips should be kept at room temperature.

Rexall Drug Store 22 Baskin Drive E., Arnprior 613-623-6591

In my mind’s eye I could see Father in the far-off fields earlier in the spring, plowing the fields that lay beyond the Bonnechere River over the West Hill. He walked behind the plow, stooped over as if he were carrying a heavy load. He used the furrow first plowed, as a guideline, never once looking back to make sure he was moving in a straight line. I would, if I wasn’t at school, go over to where he was working, sit on the log fence, and watch him. He would nod in my direction, but there was no time for idle chatter, and I would stay there for the longest time, often wondering how he could stand the constant back and forth of walking the fields that made up our farm on that side of the river. And even though much time had passed since those fields had been plowed, there was still the land on what he called the north side of the railroad tracks to tend to. Often the first-plowed fields would be sprouted by the time Father had finished plowing and planting the other fields of grain.

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

And now he was sitting on the rim of the big water tank in the barn yard. The bottoms of his bib-overalls were caked with mud from the fields he had been working in, and I saw that even his leather laces in his work boots were hidden by the dirt. I knew he would be stripping in the wood shed before coming into the house for his supper. He sat with the plow-point between his knees, anchored tightly so it couldn’t move. And I wondered how he could endure the pain of its weight on his legs, as he held it firmly so that he could work on it. And I knew why he was sitting on the rim of the water trough that was there to quench the thirst of the livestock in the hot summer weather. He had in his hand the whetstone and he was trying to

sharpen the plow point to make the job yet to be done easier. I saw that the very point of the plow point had worn away, leaving that part jagged, but there was enough left to finish the job if he could once again create a sharp edge. And that was what he was trying to do on that hot summer day. You just didn’t buy a new plow-point because a bit of it had worn off! I once asked Father how something so hard could wear down to that point, and he said it was because the land, even though his ancestors had done their best to remove them, still had buried stones in the ground. The constant contact with the stones was what had worn the plow-point down. Father, with his hands bare, scraped the stone over and over the edge of the plow-point, stopping only long enough to dip the whetstone into the trough of water, trying to create a new sharp edge.I went to the pump close by and brought him a cup of cold water. He took the cup with his weatherbeaten hand and swallowed it down without stopping. He handed the cup back to me, only nodding his thanks.

Again, I knew there was no time for idle chatter. The north fields beckoned him, and the plow point had to be ready. As I so often did, I watched Father at work that day. I moved to the twig chair that sat on the back stoop so that I could see him, hoping he didn’t know that I was there. If he did, there was no acknowledgement. And again, in my mind’s eye, I could see him walking mile after mile behind the plow pulled by our horse, and I wondered at how he could stand the monotony of it all. The steady plodding up and down, one field after another, and to finish the job, spending untold hours sitting in the sun trying to create a new sharp edge to a plow point that had served three generations. But that’s the way it was. And the way it would always be. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? sudoku

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
