Stack told the Chronicle-Guide that a great deal of work is needed to ensure upper levels of government continue to support the expansion of Highway 417 through the Upper Ottawa Valley, as well as the viability of the area’s forest industry, Base Petawawa and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories. “We’ve got to keep the pressure on,” he said. He said his experience on county council since 2006, including his service in chairing such high profile committees as operations and administration and finance would stand him in good stead in the warden’s job. As would his experience in the business world, he added. With that in mind, if elected warden Stack promised a regular organizational review of county operations, including council, to make sure everything is operating as efficiently as it can. Now is a good time with some of the high profile retirements happening at the senior staff level, he noted. “With an annual budget of $130 million and 900 employees, it (review) is a good business practice. It would be the responsible approach … it’s what businesses do.” It would help better position the county for future challenges, he said.
While Stack is no longer chairing a major committee, he did successfully persuade county council to appoint him to represent the county on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Stack pointed out that it has been a long time since an Arnprior representative served as warden, with Henry Murdoch being the last one in 1980. “It would be great for our community.” He said while some people might have been surprised at how early he and Murphy had announced their intentions, he had also thrown his hat in the warden’s race several months early last year. Murphy, who chairs the county’s administration and finance committee, is in her second term as mayor of Bonnechere Valley. She says she decided to run for the position after getting a clean bill of health after successfully fighting off breast cancer last year. She noted that it will be an exciting year to be warden as Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary next year. The new warden, for the first time, will have a deputy appointed to help represent the county in the many events to which the warden gets invited. The warden is expected to suggest which councillor should fill the role.

Arnprior Reeve Stack raises Highway 17 at FCM convention John Carter
john.carter@metroland.com
At the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention in Winnipeg on the weekend, Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack pushed the federal government to support the continued fourlaning of Highway 17 up the Valley. Stack, who is Renfrew County’s representative on the federation, argued that as the route is part of the Trans Canada Highway the federal government should support Ontario in needed improvements, especially so close to the national capital. The county has been lobbying for more help from the senior levels of government, citing the important the four-laning will have to economic development and tourism in the area.

Arnprior COP 4 CANCER Detective Sergeant Sylvain Archambeault of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Arnprior recently collected donations and pledges when he agreed to shave his head for cancer. Police across the country often hold Cops 4 cancer fundraisers in the fight against cancer. Archambeault collected over $1,200, including extra money if his friend, Arnprior dentist Tony Veale was the one to shave his head. Veale, shown with Archambeault, agreed and the hair-raising event went off without a hitch.
Stack meet with members of the county’s highway 17 committee before he left to discuss what he would be saying at the convention. “It is a real opportunity to put their feet to the fire,” he said. He noted that many major federal politicians were to attend the conference, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He said the federation had planned to use the chance to meet with government officials at the convention, which ran June 2-5, to push for continued much needed infrastructure funding for Canadian municipalities, including those in the rural areas. Meanwhile, former long-time Renfrew mayor and reeve Audrey Green was honoured at the convention for her long service in municipal government, including many years on county council.

Hundreds of cowboys, cowgirls to descend on Arnprior Continued from page 1
When registration opened up, more than 300 cowboys and cowgirls signed up in 12 hours to come to Arnprior for the first rodeo in this season’s series. “It’s unprecedented,” said Howard. “It shows how much the competitors enjoyed the town and how well the event was run last year.” He noted the hospitality shown the stampede folks was appreciated and even if Arnprior is off the beaten track when it comes to the main circuit, the rodeo folks “love” coming here. “So big kudos to Arnprior.” Another example of how well the Arnprior Stampede is viewed by the professional
rodeo association is that it was voted one of the top five new rodeos in North America last year, said Howard. He quoted B.J. Prince, owner of Rawhide Rodeo, as saying the Arnprior Stampede was a “phenomenal show.” Howard said while the main rodeos, set for 5-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday, will be the big draw, there is plenty of other family attractions from the noon hours into the evening Saturday and to closing time at 5 p.m. Sunday. The rodeo activities kick off this Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m. with the two-hour rodeo education event. All area elementary students are invited to the fairgrounds to find out about the rodeo, its animals and hear a safety message from Ontario Power Genera-

tion. Howard is disappointed that it’s a professional development day so the schools won’t be able to bus the students to the event like last year. But he notes that it’s a good way for parents to keep their children occupied for a couple of hours on a day off school. The official Stampede kick-off runs 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday with a dirt dance featuring the band Roadhouse. “We have some great entertainment this year,” he said. Valley favourite the Riley New Band will be on stage from 1:30-4:30 Saturday and the Hoss and James Barker bands will entertain after the rodeo from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Hoss band should be a hit with the older crowd, Howard said, noting the ‘outlaw’ band plays songs of Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and more. “Both bands are highly recommended,” he said.

In conjunction with the entertainment, there will be a beer garden and a variety of vendors will be on site. On both days, there will be an expanded kids fun zone from 12:30 to 8 p.m. and the Urban Sports Yamaha Excitement ‘Revs Your Heart’ zone from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Furthermore, Hydro One is bringing its huge Electricity Discovery Centre trailer. “There will be a lot more stuff for the kids,” said Howard. “They should get a real kick out of the Hydro trailer.” He said members of the local team penning group, who have been “incredibly helpful” in promoting the stampede, will be more prominent this year. They tended to be lost in the back ring last year, so their Spring Jackpot competition Saturday (1:30-3:30 p.m.) and Jackpot finals (noon to 2 p.m.) will be moved forward into the main ring. “It (stampede) is all coming together,” said Howard. “We’re stoked.”

The new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment, owned by the County of Renfrew, is on schedule and looks to be within budget. The 16,000 square foot building located at 450 O’Brien Rd. in Renfrew is a $5.3 million project that was approved by the county in August of 2014. “It was tendered at the right time, it came at the right time (November 2015 to Guy Saumure and Sons Construction Ltd.). Save ice pad, attract teams H
games. Obesity becomes a problem for the health care system, which becomes a problem for all taxpayers. Properly funding kids’ sports is an investment that will stave off future costs. Like education, sports is a way to reduce costs in other areas like hospitals and jails. Trouble is, the quick tax cut often wins out over the foresight needed for investing in ourselves. We are now at the point in Arnprior that town council must consider whether to shut down B ice pad at Nick Smith Centre or not. It isn’t cheap to run rinks. A new chiller is being installed on the A side right now. Does it make sense to keep the ice in both given that participation numbers are on the decline? It is a fair question. No one should be afraid to discuss the possibility. A private company with four ice pads in Kanata has lured away many of the tournments Arnprior used to host. The aging demographic - a Canada-wide phenomenon - also plays a part. Maybe converting the B side to a tennis court could improve the health of the many retirees who are now moving to town. However, the challenge for the town of Arnprior is to find a balance. It wants to welcome retirees but also attract young families. Investments in the library and hospital, along with the expensive accessibility policy, were all worthy. So is ensuring the Nick Smith Centre is brimming with activity. Town employees should work to bring hockey tournaments to town just as they do new businesses. The economic spinoffs through tourism and bolstered reputation make it worthwhile. LETTERS And the town ought to lobby the federal government to raise taxes on our wealthiest individuals and corporations to help pay for lower ice rental fees. It is clear from our Facebook commentators that they want fees reduced; council ought to listen. Good governance is about investing tax dollars for a longterm payoff. ockey registration season is back, and with it the annual handwringing over escalating costs and declining enrollment. But this year, in Arnprior, is the addition of the possible closure of a rink. It is time to reverse the trend by committing tax dollars to youth winter sports. It could pay off in more ways than one. There is no doubt that hockey (and sports like ringette and figure skating) are seeing their numbers decline. A recent story featuring long-time coach Clayton Pirie discussed the good old days when every village had a team and towns enjoyed multiple teams in various divisions. Cost is largely to blame. Many families struggle to stay in the middle class with salaries that have flatlined over several decades as upper classes contribute less and less. So families prioritize; hockey and other kids’ sports are dropped in favour of paying bills. The last day to register early with Arnprior Minor Hockey Association is June 14, 7 to 9 p.m., at Nick Smith. The cost is between $295 and $520, depending on the age. It works out to about $10 per hour on the ice. But out-of-town hotel and gas expenses add up. Even with dedicated volunteers putting in countless hours, hockey is quickly becoming a sport for rich people only. There is room for associations to reflect on their own priorities. Fewer trips out of town, more scrimmages at home. The goal is to have kids scoring goals, not travel too often. If the trend continues, the dire warnings of Canada’s game morphing into an elitest sport will come true. Our traditions and culture are at stake. Pricing out middle and lower classes from sports like hockey will lead to increased fears of a declining standard of living (they can’t afford to give their kids what their parents gave them) which could lead to resentment against governments and higher classes. On top of that are the health implications. Kids who aren’t out playing hockey or other sports tend to sit on the couch with video

clear, I voted Liberal in the last election, and I am a Federal Liberal through and through as I believe the sensible centre is the best way to govern. However the prime minister, and my party of choices, decision to pat themselves on the back in terms of making life better for students is a premature celebration at best. Quite frankly the claims of more students being employed than expected is disingenuous.

Student job numbers tweaked under two governments Continued from page 8
The numbers of the Canada Summer Job program under this government have been tweaked just as the Conservatives tweaked the regular employment stats under their reign. More students may be employed this summer through the program but those are not full time summer jobs –which university students need. Instead of lasting three or four months –from April to September the funding for individual jobs has been cut down to a mere six weeks of work for each position. Different organizations that applied for
more positions this year may have gotten them, but they are not able to hire students full time over the summer. This means that students need to seek out jobs elsewhere and jobs for students are not exactly plentiful. Right now, for example I am working three. Far worse is that these short contracts don’t even start until July this year –leaving students scrambling even more to make ends meet in the intervening time or else find a more stable job. Funding for these Canada Works positions was approved extremely late this year-and with such short contracts many of them are not even worth working; unless you have absolutely nothing else which is

“It’s a pretty good investment for the county that will continue to demonstrate its value for a long time,” said Emon. Emon is very enthusiastic about the progress especially given the winter; he says they could have been behind. “The contractor has done a great job at meeting timelines and has exceeded some,” said Emon. “The quality of construction is very good and the building will look great. They know how to build and do it well.” Saumure and Sons has built a number of OPP stations throughout Eastern Ontario. “When you hire people with previous knowledge it is a real benefit,” said Emon. There are two contracts with the project. The first is for the building, the ‘shell’ and the landscaping outside. This portion of the project is on schedule to be finished in August. Contract two deals with the building’s interior . It starts once everything with the outside of the building is complete. This includes the offices, interior, floor and items very specific to the OPP such as gun lockers, finger print area and the cell area. The Province of Ontario awarded the second contract to Guy Saumure and Sons Construction at the end of May. The building will complement Renfrew County Place (across the street) as the county tries to establish a ‘family’ of buildings. “It’s important for the County of Renfrew to stake out its identity in each community,”
sadly the case and was nearly my case. If this government legitimately cares about students, in future, it needs to ensure that funding for summer positions is sufficient to last for a good chunk of the summer not a mere six weeks! This government also must step up and begin disseminating funding a lot earlier so that organizations are not hiring in June and having the work start in July! I have a high average, I participate in varsity athletics at school, I have a passion and active interest for politics and I am working three jobs this
summer-just to pay the rent, buy food, and put some money toward school before my loans come in. I hate to be critical of this government, but one must be critical at times if you truly support something. The Canada Summer Jobs program is neither better nor worse than it was under the previous administration. Change for students was promised but hasn’t come yet. EOWC hosts successful meeting with federal MPs Earlier this week, members of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) welcomed their federal representatives from across the region to a breakfast meeting on Parliament Hill to discuss priorities and partnership opportunities that would directly benefit rural Eastern Ontario. Warden Peter Emon, chair of the EOWC, and MP Mike Bossio, chair of the National Rural Caucus, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of their respective groups. Both spoke at length about the importance of a regional approach and the need for increased collaboration and partnership between the federal government and rural municipalities. “Municipalities are your best partner and the EOWC has a proven track record of providing accurate research to upper levels of government and completing projects on time and on budget, such as the Eastern Ontario Regional Network,” Emon told his federal counterparts. “With its history of success, Eastern Ontario can be the model that the rest of Canada benefits from.” The regional priorities discussed Monday morning include stable infrastructure funding for roads and

Some babies only get motherly love Currently many animals are busy preparing for the arrival of young. Recently I watched a Red Squirrel going back and forth from a dead tree to a mossy outcrop a hundred feet away. On the ground it would stuff its mouth full of soft moss then climb a nearby pine and with the ease of Tarzan quickly traverse several trees until it reached the dead one. There it would disappear into a cavity only to emerge a few seconds later, mouth empty. This process was repeated numerous times until I had to leave. Even though male and female Red Squirrels are identical to our eye (but obviously not to theirs!) I knew this was a female preparing a birth den. The first conclusion was easy because in 90 per cent of all of the mammals in the world, after mating the males depart, leaving the impregnated females to deal with the aftermath of their sexual interlude. This applies to most rodents with Beavers being a notable exception. The other conclusion was also a “no brainer” because Red Squirrels don’t eat moss and use it only for lining dens. Things are different in birds. In about 95 per cent of all 9,8000 species alive today, males help their mates rear young. Rearing young
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way can involve keeping eggs warm, feeding mates on the nest, keeping young birds fed and warm, keeping a nest free of feces, and protecting young from predators. All of these duties take place after a nest is built, a task often completed solely by the female. Some birds already have their first brood off the nest. Recently I’ve seen newly fledged Eastern Phoebes, as well as many broods of ducks and geese. While male ducks subscribe to the “love them and leave them” philosophy, Canada Geese do not, and male geese can be seen alongside their mates keeping a close eye on their goslings. Incidentally, geese normally have
fewer than eight eggs in a nest so if you see a pair with a dozen or so young in tow, you are not seeing the result of fertility drugs. You are seeing a crèche, a common phenomenon in waterfowl, especially ducks. For some reason – possibly the health of the abandoning female – some females deposit their brood with another female and her brood. Regardless of the underlying reason a benefit is conferred to both broods: by travelling in large numbers, the odds of any one youngster being taken by a predator are reduced. Soon after hatching, waterfowl babies abandon their nest. But songbird hatchlings remain in their nests for about two weeks, until their flight feathers grow in. After fledging, they continue to be fed by the parents until they gain full independence. Even though their young will soon be on their own, many songbirds are not yet done with parental responsibilities. For some, such as American Robins and Eastern Phoebes, a second and even third batch of young may be produced. And during those other additional nesting efforts, the males never shirk their responsibilities. But I wonder if they ever wish they were a duck? The Nature number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca
MICHAEL RUNTZ
Keeping their young warm on cold days is only one of the many parental tasks performed by American Robins and other songbirds. Below: Geese are unusual among waterfowl in that both parents help care for their young.

Monday, June 27, 2016 • 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Almonte Old Town Hall • 14 Bridge Street, Almonte
The Municipality of Mississippi Mills has initiated the Infrastructure Renewals – Almonte Downtown Core Environmental Assessment (EA) Study. The study is addressing the advance planning needs for renewal of underground servicing (water, sewer, drainage, utilities) in the downtown core. It also involves working with the community to develop road and streetscape designs that are complementary to local business and enable safe, convenient and comfortable access for users of all ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation. The streetscape design under development shall work to enhance the unique cultural and heritage features of the core that are key to the Municipality’s continued success in local business, tourism, community events and festivals. The study process involves developing, assessing and evaluating alternatives, which will result in a Recommended Plan to be presented to Council for approval. The study area is as shown in the key map. An Open House will be held in June to review and discuss a draft Recommended Plan with residents and to solicit feedback. This drop-in style event will help continue the discussion as we work towards a plan for downtown Almonte. The study will be conducted in accordance with Ontario’s EA Act, fulfilling the requirements of the Municipal Class EA process that may apply. Interested persons can provide comments throughout the study process. Any comments received will be collected under the EA Act and, with the exception of personal information, will become part of the public record. Information about the study is also available on the Town’s website and Facebook page. For further information or to provide comments, please contact:

During the initial stages we are having many uncomfortable symptoms associated with this condition which interfere in one way or another with our lives. However in advanced stages diabetes can contribute to prolonging our suffering and often healing journeys are incredibly challenged and can even be fatal. I personally observed my grandfather suffer for many years from the ill effects of diabetes, where a wound wasn’t healing, which led to the amputation of a toe and later on even of his leg. Finally, as we see all too often, I saw, what used to be a strong vibrant man, my grandfather giving up and suffering to his final days. That was unfortunately well before I knew about Heilkunst. Diabetes is what I’d call more a challenging by-product of our industrial revolution era. In the majority of cases we can do a lot to try and prevent it - and by this I mean ourselves - not the Doctors. Lifestyle and of course eating habits are considered to be the main culprits in the prevention or the management of diabetes. Stress and emotional challenges should not be overlooked or discredited to be doing their influential part as well. Of course, just as with many other chronic conditions, the moment one organ is chronically challenged or damaged, it will have an effect on other organs as well. This is how the vicious cycle often starts. Our Heilkunst treatment will look at all facets of the diabetic condition, from prevention, hereditary challenges, life styles, nutritional habits to pain management. We will look at organ rejuvenation and will try to bring back a proper organ function of your pancreas. Our Live Blood Analysis will help assist any nutritional deficiencies, so you know where to put your money and efforts to rebuild your body, rather than shooting stars by taking a lot of supplements not knowing whether you actually need or benefit from them. I helped many people manage their diabetes to prevent any medication as well as bringing individuals off the needle to manage their diabetes just with medication. Can you imagine how grateful they are to have this new peace of mind? Can YOU imagine what kind of new freedom and peace it would be if YOU could also personally benefit from our treatment? Not even to mention how happy your spouses, children or loved ones would be to see you manage this condition in a new way.Take Control…Experience Heilkunst!

ADHS girls earn bronze at Ontario rugby championship Arnprior District High School rebounded from a rare defeat to win a bronze medal in the Ontario A/AA girls rugby championship. ADHS defeated St. Mary’s 26-15 June 1 to finish third at the OFSAA championships in Ottawa. Arnprior’s only loss was to perennial girls rugby powerhouse and eventual champion Trenton in the semi-final game. Trenton won its third straight A/ AA girls rugby title and sixth in the last eight years by trampling topranked Bayside 31-7 in the gold medal game. Trenton was ranked second, ADHS third and St. Mary’s fourth in pre-tournament seedings. Arnprior gave Trenton its toughest test of the tournament, losing 15-0 in the semi-final Tuesday afternoon. Trenton scored more than 30 points in all its other tournament games. ADHS kicked off the tournament with a 29-0 win over number 14 seed Ashbury College. Anne-Marie McNab scored two tries, with Shelby Macmillan, Hanna Scott and Bobby Jo Cavanagh adding one each. Kirst-

ber 11 seed Courtice, an upset winner over St. Michael’s in its first game. Kirsten Trafford led the way with two tries, while Dakota Hanson, Bobby Jo Cavanagh, Caitlin
Clouthier and Grace Maxwell added one each. Clouthier also had a two-point convert. That win set up a powerhouse clash between ADHS and Tren-
ton for a berth in the Gold medal final. Although shorthanded as a result of a few key injuries and on the wrong side of some crucial and puzzling officiating decisions, ADHS fought to the limit, reports coach Glenn Wallace. Trailing only 5-0 with 10 minutes to go, a crucial officiating decision went against ADHS and allowed a controversial second Trenton try to stand. Wallace notes the game was far closer than the final score of 15-0 for Trenton would suggest. ADHS rebounded from the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to beat number 4 St. Mary’s of Owen Sound. It was just the latest in a string of strong performances by the Arnprior girls rugby team, which finished fourth at OFSAA last year and has captured five Eastern Ontario titles in the last eight years. The 2016 A/AA OFSAA bronze medal goes into the trophy cabinet alongside the 2011 A/AA OFSAA silver medal and 2015 AAA OFSAA antique bronze (fourth-place) medal.

Arnprior Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) has an extra special incentive during this June’s registration nights. A free registration worth about $500 will be raffled off. Tickets are $5 and sold at the two registration nights only. Registration was held on June 7. It runs again on Tuesday, June 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Nick Smith Center. If anyone is even considering being on a team in any role (coach, assistant coach, trainer, manager etc.) they must have a valid police vulnerable sector check done by the OPP. Forms will be available at registration night, people are highly encouraged to commence their police check right away as it can take in some cases two to three months to be returned. They will not be put on to a team list without it, so why not get the jump on things now. It is a simple process, fill out the paperwork and drop it off at the OPP station. The forms will be available at registration for those considering being an AMHA volunteer. AMHA will host two coaching clinics: • Hockey Canada Development 1 (required for head coaches of rep teams from peewee and up) Sept. 24 and 25 at the Nick Smith Center; • Hockey Canada Coach 1 – Intro Coach, required for those who wish to get on the ice at the Initiation level (Tim Bits) Oct. 8 at Nick Smith Center Both course have combined classroom and on ice sessions. Team Mito runs ORW with strong Valley presence Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
It was a hot weekend to be running in Ottawa Race Weekend. But the 150 runners on Team Mito Canada, including 20 from the Arnprior and Renfrew area, were running to make a difference and could not be stopped. Eight-year-old Nicholas Antonakos, from Arnprior, smiles 9 per cent of the time, says his mother Sarah Tait. He also lives with mitochondrial disease, which is a genetic disorder without a cure. It affects mitochondria, which are the parts of cells that convert food and oxygen into energy. When it fails the cells die.
But that doesn’t stop Nicholas from smiling and being so happy other kids want to share in his happiness. This year Team Mito sported bright pink shirts, which was Kate Drury’s favourite colour. The Ottawa youngster succumbed to the disease on Nov. 30, 2015. Julie Drury from Ottawa organized the team and this year the entire team is running to honour Kate. “This year Mito Canada is directing all of the funds raised at Ottawa Race Weekend by Team Mito to mito research at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario,” said Tait. “It is a special race this year for Kate because normally the funds raised go to Mito Canada.
It’s nice because this year the funds are staying local.” The team’s goal was to raise $42,200, which is the distance of a marathon (42.2 kilometres). The team surpassed that goal by raising $45,000. Tait has been running since 2012, when Team Mito first entered. This year she ran her first half marathon. “Because the funds are staying local, I decided to push myself,” said Tait. Tait and those on Team Mito were raising money for one main thing. “One of the biggest things is raising awareness. The reaction is always I’ve never heard of that. It is important people learn more
about the disease. The more we raise and the more awareness the research can be done.” One of Tait’s friends Natalie Blank-Cazabon ran the five-kilometre race for Team Mito. She was ready to give up one day on her training but that special smile saved the day. “Nicholas was outside smiling away and I said to myself I can’t stop, I got to keep going,” said Blank-Cazabon. Members of Team Mito say they are running for those who cannot. “With what all the kids are going through they never give up. We use that smile as motivation. I just think of him and keep pushing. My legs might hurt but it’s nothing
like what these kids go through,” said Tait. Renfrew resident, Evelyn Furniss, was recently diagnosed with mitochondrial disease. She passed away on May 19 at just nine months old. “For those of us with a Valley connection we will be keeping Evelyn in our thoughts,” said Tait. Tait also ran to honour Evelyn. She is also very thankful for all of the Valley’s support. “With the benefit for Evelyn, and Home Hardware in Arnprior supporting the Turn Your Porch Light Green event, there’s always a tremendous amount of support available,” said Tait. “It’s one of the best things about Valley living!”

Madawaska Golf Club news: Dude, Where’s my Par Kevin Ryan
Madawaska Golf Club
The Madawaska Golf Club is back in full swing after a long winter of snow, ice and cold weather. The season had a bit of a late start, but the course is in exceptional condition and Martyn Munro and his staff have been very busy keeping ahead of the grass cutting and cleaning up the winter debris. Major changes include additional tree clearing on both sides of the 1st fairway as well as beside the 10th green and the along both sides of the 11th fairway. The 17th tee is currently being rebuilt with some major tree clearing. The goal is for a slight yardage change to the hole plus increased airflow and sunlight on the tee aimed at improving the grass growth. The pro shop has been moved into the clubhouse and all golfers are asked to register with the pro shop staff prior to playing. The excellent course conditions have jumpstarted the men’s competitive seasons starting with the Kickers scramble on May 1. Gary Grainger, Brian Wallace, Tom Clouthier and John Kohli were the opening day winners with an 8-under-par score of 62.
The opening men’s day was held on May 5 and was sponsored by the Madawaska Men’s Club. Club captain Dan McCaskill (an even score of par 70 which is a very good start) and Ray Kulchyski were the A flight winners, followed by Drew Lavictoire and Hal Grainger in B flight. Barry Craig and Rob Frietag were the C flight winners and the D flight winners were Doug Staye and El Strauss. Men’s day on May 12 was sponsored by the Madawaska Golf Club. The long drivers for the evening were Perry Freda and Keith Blimkie. Perry Freda and Ken Ledgerwood were the A flight winners. Hal Grainger and Ken Borg the B flight winners, followed by Keith Blimkie and Barry Craig in C flight. Mark Murdoch and El Strauss were the D flight winners for the evening. The Men’s opening Field day was held on May 15 Jack Killeen was the overall winner with a net score of 70 and also had he also had the low gross score of 74 under very cool conditions. Great shooting on a very challenging day. The A flight low shooters included Perry Freda, Gary Grainger, Dan McCaskill and Jon Freda. The B flight winner was Steve Wilson followed by Del McMillan. The C flight winner was Hal Grainger
with Brian Clouthier in second position. D flight was won by Doug Carty and Ben Jones was in the runner-up position. Premergency and Dean DiMonte sponsored Men’s night on May 19 The long drivers for the evening were Matt Brown and Harold Neumann. The closest to the pin winners were Dave Timms and Barry Craig. Perry Freda and Jeff O’Neill were the A flight winners. Ron Hawthorne and Dean Brown were the B flight low shooters, followed by Ben Jones and Dan Kieley in C flight. Gilbert Paquette and Bob Baker were the low shooters in D flight. The May 26 men’s day was sponsored by the Madawaska Men’s Club. Gilbert Paquette and Terry Braceland were the D flight winners, followed by Dave Cornier and Keith Blimkie in C flight. Del McMillan and Ken Ledgerwood were the B flight low shooters, followed by Ray Kulchyski and Kevin Ryan in A flight. The long drivers were Robert Caruthers and Harold Grose and the closest-to-thepin winners were Ron Hawthorne and Ben Jones. Terry Braceland was the closest-to-theline winner on the day. The very popular team game competition draft night was held on May 26 and
the goal this year is to expand on the number of players in the event and to de-throne the first year champions – Golf Gods.par. One change for the 2016 season is that new team names are required every year going forward. Returning captains and team names (are you ready?) include Dan McCaskill (Dude, Where’s my Par), Kevin Ledgerwood (The Sultans of Swing), Frank Pecora (MoneyBall) and Kevin Ryan (The Gary Players). Dean Dimonte has joined in to captain a team for the season and his team name is ‘Balls of Fire’. Regular updates will be provided during the year and the email banter between the captains is in full flow already. See www.madawaskagolf.com for more.

County-wide summer camp program launches and seeks donations Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
It’s almost time to sing songs around the campfire and dip your paddle in the water. That’s right, camp time is right around the corner. Helping to make the summer camp dream possible is the Darlene Aikens Memorial Summer Camp Program: Summer Smiles Campaign, which was officially launched recently outside the County of Renfrew building in Pembroke. Dave Henderson, fund development co-ordinator for Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County, is excited to help launch
the program with a strong goal announced. “We are hoping to send 250 children to summer camp right across Renfrew County. With an average cost of $350 per camper we are looking for $75,000 to help bring summer camping experiences and all the great benefits that come with it to the children,” said Henderson. The fund covers camps from right across the county, including day camps in both Renfrew and Arnprior. Henderson hopes the public will donate to help cover the cost. “A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated,” he said. The camp program is named after Darlene Aikens, a former man-
ager who ran the program before she passed away. “She had a wonderful heart for children and summer camps,” said Henderson. “She was deeply dedicated to making sure children across Renfrew County had a camping experience.” Arijana Haramincic, executive director of Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County, explained this program has been running for over 30 years. “It has been in honour of one of our workers who passed away too early,” said Haramincic. “In that honour we wanted to provide a support for all the children in the county to have a won-
derful summer camp experience.” Both Henderson and Haramincic noted the camp experience was therapeutic for children to attend. “Studies show that a camping experience for children increase’s their self-worth, self-esteem, helps with their social interaction,” said Henderson. “The whole family unit benefits from the summer camp experience.” According to Haramincic, many children in the county would not be able to attend camps without the program. “In Renfrew County there is one in 10 children who live in poverty, so for those children this is one way to be able to participate in
childhood and have those experiences that will carry them into being adults and hopefully they will be able to share that with their own children,” said Haramincic. The honorary chair for the campaign is Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, who worked for Aikens. Part of his job was to drop and pick up kids from camp. “It was a good experience to see how excited they were about it and watch them bring their crafts back and take them back to their parents and show some of the things they made, pottery or dream catchers,” said Emon. To donate to the Summer Smiles Campaign, go online to www.fcsrenfrew.on.ca or call 613-735-6866.

Girl Guides focus on growing The Arnprior Girl Guides movement held its Advancement Ceremony May 11 with girls moving up through Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders. The theme of the ceremony was growing and the following quote is from the ceremony. “Growing – there are many stages in growth – babies grow into children, then into teenagers and then, eventually, into adults – all living things grow and change and then start all over again. Tonight we are glad that you have joined us to celebrate a very important stage of the growth in the life of these young members of the Girl Guides. As with everything, it takes lots of fun and work to grow Guiding. Tonight we will see the many colours of what has been grown in Arnprior and what a beautiful flower we have been growing and will continue to grow.” Guiding in Arnprior resumes in September. Girls can sign up online at www.girlguides.ca.

NOVENA TO St. Jude. O Holy St. Jude, Apostle and martyr, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the bottom of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys and 3 Glorys. Publication must be promised. St Jude, pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. MNB

With strength, courage and peace on May 9th, 2016 in his 95th year, Willard Bahm joined his dear wife Margaret (Nov. 5, 2015). So many paid their respects to a reliable friend & neighbour, co-worker and a dear, fun, cherished Uncle and cousin on Saturday May 21st at Boyce Funeral Home. On Sunday May 22nd, an inspirational celebration of messages, scriptures, fiddles and song was held to a man who in his own way was so well known in this community at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Arnprior where he and his Margaret were married in 1944. Carried by his Grandson’s and flanked by his Granddaughters, he took his final journey and was laid to rest beside his love at Sand Point Cemetery. His legacy of children and family of nearly 60 want to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to those who provided condolences, visits, cards, donations, food, flowers and prayers. Your words of comfort, sharing your stories and appreciation of what he meant to you, bring with it so much gratitude. Again, to the staff of Boyce Funeral Home thank you for your professionalism and genuine friendship. Special thanks to Rev. Leo Hughes, and The Royal Canadian Legion for honouring Dad and acknowledging your appreciation for his service. Dr. Earl Gordon, Dr. Mark Robson and their staff for their years of attentive care – thank you. The staff and residents of the Arnprior Villa ~ your companionship with Dad and your continued support to us has been immeasurable. John & Maria and staff of Jim’s Restaurant, your willing spirit to this community, your friendship to Dad and to us will always be cherished. Thank you for accommodating our family. As always, Dad was determined to do things his own way. The staff of ADMH made that possible for him with their exemplary and kind attentiveness. The family extends their appreciation and gratitude to you all. We learned of life’s many riches from Dad ~ one of the most cherished is the gift of music. His service was filled with laughter and song, the celebration of a full and blessed life ~ many thanks to those who contributed and participated to make it so special. Particular thanks to Rev. Milton Fraser for your reassurance, comfort and continued dedication to this family. Rev. David Hooper for honouring Dad with a special message and your faithful service and friendship to him, Helen Black for her continued dedicated work, with music and the faithful ladies of St. Andrew’s for providing refreshments for our time of fellowship. To our extended family, friends, neighbours and coworkers, your acts of kindness, heartfelt words of encouragement, sharing memories of laughter, song and friendship will continue to be a great comfort. ~ The family of Willard Bahm

In Loving Memory of
Parnell V Shalla In loving memory of a dear husband, father, and grandfather, who passed away 1 year ago June 10, 2015. I remember the day I met you and the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, and will remember ‘till the end of time. We made our vows together, until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, my whole world fell apart. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe its true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you. And the memories of the happy years when we were together, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, will stay with me forever. And when I’m sad and lonely and everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper cheer up and carry on. Each time I see our picture, you seem to smile and say, Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, we’ll meet again someday. Love and miss you Stella and family

It’s not the Storyland you remember. There will be no children to push up the hill or the stresses of a family vacation at the new Elements Luxury Tented Camp. Instead there are king sized beds with the best bedding in the industry, wilderness butlers, and spa services. Glamping - that’s glamorous camping - has pitched its tent in Horton. The official media launch was held on May 24. The camp officially opens in June and is now 60 per cent sold out for the camping season. Nicole Laframboise purWWW.STREETFLEAMARKET.NET chased the former children’s activity park in 2013. Nicole Laframboise, owner of the new Elements Luxury Tented Camp, sits on one of the luscious queen size beds in a large tent on the former Storyland property. place to continue making new happy memories. Kingsbury also told the Renfrew Mercury the new camp will help promote the township. “I think it’s great, it promotes Horton to the whole world. When Nikki goes to the United Kingdom she is going to tell them what we have to offer right here in Horton,” said Kingsbury. “It establishes that yes you can succeed in Horton, with 60 per cent sold out that is pretty great.” Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was one of the many speakers on hand who also offered her congratulations and presented a certificate. Laframboise knows she has a very specific target market; 38 to 68-year-olds, 80 per cent of whom are women. “We have hit that mark. We have people who are busy 9-5ers - they are stuck in office spaces, they are overworked and stressed, they have children and pets and they just wanted a place where they can run away and hide,” said Laframboise. “We are working on building that sort of economy and giving people a place to runaway to and retreat to.” The new campground has everything you would want to get away from it all: a
yoga studio, paddle boards, groomed trails, mountain bikes and more. “It’s not a structured facility, you get to do what you want to do. If you have to take your laptop and get some work done while you’re at it we have a business centre with Wifi set up so you can look out over the ravine and relax and chase down those emails,” said Laframboise. “But if you really want to disconnect go to the northern side of the property and the beach, go for a walk, bike rides, trails professionally done. We have a lot of great outdoor activities you do at your own free will and rest and relax when you want to.” It’s also affordable she says. Glamping has been in Canada for 20 years and a night usually goes for $1,500. Prices at Elements start at $270 a night for two people, which includes all meals (delivered to one of eight camp sites by the wilderness butlers), snacks and a S’mores board with chocolates from J&J Chocolate Sensations in Renfrew. “The pricing is really reasonable for what you are getting.” For more information on Elements Luxury Tented Camp and Nature Spa visit: www.outdoorhotel.ca .
Library provides Grove residents with customized playlist Praise & Worship The Arnprior Public Library is expanding its Homebound Service through a special partnership with the Grove Nursing Home. The iPod Project aims to provide each Grove resident with a personalized, catered playlist on an iPod Shuffle. Inspired by the recent screening of the documentary Alive Inside, the Library approached The Grove to initiate the program. “It’s a full circle, inter-generational community project,” said chief librarian Karen DeLuca. “High School students will assist in interviewing Grove residents and their families to create specialized playlists. The library will co-ordinate the donation and purchase of iPod Shuffles and the music. “High School students will be able to get additional community hours by loading the devices and circulating them to Grove residents.” The Grove’s Recreation and Adult Day Program Manager Tracey McCormick is excited to launch the program. “This initiative is a lovely dovetail with our strategic plan. This year are we focussing on community partnerships and how they can enhance the resident experience. I have seen first-hand the impact on how an iPod can transport a resident to a place where SUBMITTED they can manage pain or connect Recently, the Library took its green screen to the Grove and together back with their memories,” said residents imagined where their special music would transport them. McCormick. Anne Malham is wooed by the king, Elvis Presley. Apple Canada has been approached for discounts on the purchase of iPod Shuffles and the Library has set up an account through Apple’s Charity program. The Library is also accepting donations of gently used devices. “Simply drop off iPod Shuffles that are no longer being used and we will ensure they are reloaded and given new life,” said DeLuca. Cash donations are also being accepted for the purchase of the music. Charitable receipts will be issued for donations over $10. The goal is to launch the project this summer by providing 60 devices, one for each of the Grove’s residents. The documentary Alive Inside is a joyous look at how music evokes emotion and emotion brings back memories. The Library will provide another two free matinee screenings of the inspiring film: Tuesday, June 14 and Monday, June 20 at 2 p.m.

Emerson chokes on his own joke
T
he two chokecherry bushes just before the West Hill began were in full bloom. Soon they would be heavy with the little berries and would become jelly. The jars would help fill our cellar shelves, already starting to show the results of Mother’s pickling and preserves. Not only did I love chokecherry jelly, spread on fresh buttered bread, but I often went to the two trees and popped a few in my mouth, enjoying the tart taste of the little berries. My brother Emerson, whose mission in life seemed to be to make my life miserable, one day told me something that just about ruined my love of chokecherries. “Did you hear what happened to the Kallies boys second cousin, once removed? Well, he ate a handful of

chokecherries and took a few sips of milk, and he choked to death.” I figured I was safe because even though we had an ample supply of milk in the farm, I hated it. I was sure I could smell cow off a glass of milk, and to get milk into me, Mother had to stir in a spoon of cocoa and a few drops of vanilla. Only then could I get the glass of milk down. So I wasn’t likely to drop dead from eating a few chokecherries. I assured Emerson if he planned on getting rid of me any time soon, it wouldn’t be from eating chokecherries and

then drinking milk! That afternoon, Mother made a batch of jelly from what Audrey and I were able to get off the bushes. The house was full of the wonderful smell of boiling berries. And then supper was on the table. And there was a bowl of fresh jelly. Emerson was sitting across from me on the bench that ran under the grape arbour window, and he spotted the jelly as soon as I did. I wasn’t sure what he was up to, but there was no doubt in my mind he was up to something. The fruit nappies sat in
the middle of the table, and Emerson took one and helped himself to a few spoons full of jelly. He slathered a good helping of jelly on his slice of buttered bread, and crammed most of it into his mouth. Then he took a good swig of milk. Within seconds his eyes rolled into the back of his head, and he started to cough, just like he did when he had the gripe in the winter time. Mother stayed remarkably calm, and in a voice she reserved for the times when she lost her patience, asked Emerson what was wrong. “It’s the chokecherry jelly mixed with the milk,” he said, gasping for breath. “I told Mary this could happen and she wouldn’t believe me.” His face was beet red from the coughing, and he looked like he was going to slide off the bench and under the table. Everett and Earl, sitting on each side of him, didn’t lose a beat. They kept on
eating their nappies of jelly as if their brother choking to death was a common

occurrence. Mother finally put down her spoon, and her voice
was now the one she used when she was about to give one of us a cuff on the ear. “So you think it was the jelly, do you?” Emerson could only nod. “Well that’s mighty strange,” Mother said. “Because that’s blackberry jelly you’re eating. A bottle left over from last year. The chokecherry jelly has to settle before we eat it.” Everett and Earl both gave Emerson a poke in the ribs, my sister Audrey was laughing so hard she had to leave the table, and Father got up and went to his rocking chair and lit his pipe. “Don’t know what a man has to do to get to eat a meal in peace around here,” could be heard in a voice just above a whisper. akulp@metroland.com
Hundreds of women filed into the Stewart Community Centre in Pakenham May 6 for an evening of fun and fundraising during the 12th and final Burn Your Bra for Bev event. Over the past 12 years, the initiative, driven by the late Bev Griffith, has raised $500,000 for local causes including CHEO, the Ottawa Heart Institute, Almonte General Hospital, Do It For Daron and the Mississippi Mills Fire Department. It has also supported the fight against as breast, uterine, ovarian and thyroid cancers. This year’s event benefitted ALS.

This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
