ADHS students exceed Relay for Life goal raise more than $14,000 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

This year’s Relay for Life event in Arnprior really hit home for students and staff. More than 200 students gathered on the track at Arnprior District High School (ADHS) on a sunny June 8 for the annual Relay for Life, to have fun and raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Their goal was $13,000 and they finished out the day raising more than $14,000. There was a lip sync battle, Zumba, water sponge dodge ball, watermelon eating contest, an obstacle course, musical chairs and a coffee house. With all that fun, there was also a message of survival as Elizabeth Brumm, who proudly wore a T-shirt declaring “Yes, they’re fake, my real ones tried to kill me,” shared her cancer journey with the students. Brumm said it was an honour and a pleasure to walk in the survivor lap. She shared that she found out that she had cancer around 4 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon. “I was completely blindsided by cancer,” said Brumm, whose daughter Mallory is a Relay for Life committee member. “I can’t even begin to describe the myriad of feelings that overwhelmed me at that point, but I can tell you that my main thought turned to my children.” Fighting back tears she told the students what happened next: a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. “It wasn’t pretty, I was bald, couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep and tried to be positive,” said Brumm. “Cancer changes you. Apart from all the physical scars, there are emotional ones as well. You’re not the same person you used to be and that makes you realize how fragile life is.” However, she reminded them she was standing there today. “I am one of the lucky ones, I have survived,” said Brumm. “I had the best possible care from the best oncologists and doctors, I had the love and support of family and friends, which gave me the strength I needed.” She experienced her first relay in May 2007 and was overcome with emotion watching the survivors. “I admired their strength and resiliency the possessed. They were heroes.” She was diagnosed in September 2007 and in May 2008 participated in her second relay as a survivor. “The funds raised, not only for research but for support of cancer patients, is crucial in eradicating this disease so thank you for your efforts in making cancer history.”

Committee member Emily Dawson thanked everyone who was involved with making the event possible. “Thank you to the committee, the sponsors, we have a really great community here in Arnprior,” said Dawson. “Thank you to the survivors, this is really what this event is all about.” Cam Whalen, youth program specialist for Eastern Ontario at the Canadian Cancer Society, also praised the students. “This doesn’t happen without you, give yourself a hand,” said Whalen. “There are 150 schools involved with Relay for Life all raising $4.5 million, that’s amazing.” Whalen said what was really cool is that ADHS has been able to build upon their Relay for Life events over the past couple of years. “We have seen a lot of big heart and tremendous effort here and they have really risen above the challenge,” said Whalen. “Through their organization to the execution it’s really been tremendous what they have overcome to make it a success.” In total, they have held six Relay for Life events raising a total of $157,771 plus the $14,000 raised at the 2017 edition of the fundraiser. Principal Tom Havey said this was another example of the students confirming who they really are. “They understand community, that life goes beyond these walls, we need to interact and help the community,” said Havey. “They are part of a national effort as well in the fight against cancer. We got a lot of great kids at our school who give and are happy to give of their time and efforts towards a good cause.” Nic Edge, public relations committee member, was impressed with how supportive the students were of the event and he was also thankful for the support received from school staff for the event. “They have such great spirit and they really care about raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Edge. “Everyone has been affected by cancer.” The event was supported by a number of local businesses including; Reid Brothers, No Frills, PJ’s Restaurant, Milano’s, Subway, Mac’s, Prior Engagements, the Town of Arnprior, Mount Pakenham and Dan’s Delicious Dogs. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School also held a special buy-out during an ADHS versus St. Joe’s soccer game raising $1,500 for the cause. St. Joe’s has supported the relay before but this year there was a special meaning as ADHS teacher Laura Carter, from Renfrew, was recently diagnosed with cancer and her husband is also a teacher at the Renfrew high school.

An Arnprior homeowner says she isn’t getting her tax bills in the mail, but is getting notice of late payments, along with the accompanying late fee. Jane Scribailo lives in Kanata and rents out a home in the Olympia subdivision west of Highway 417. She receives her City of Ottawa tax bills electronically for her primary residence, but finds the paper version of her rental property in the mail. She says she examines every bill that comes in. A couple of years ago, the Town of Arnprior overcharged slightly on garbage pickup. She called and the matter was quickly cleared up. She made a mental note going forward to check every bill from the town. However, it didn’t bother her to the point of waiting at the door for the tax bill. Like many, she only thinks of the tax bill when it arrives. Her Arnprior utility bill finds its way to her mailbox without difficulty, so why think of the tax bill until it arrives? She will from now on. Property taxes are mailed out twice per year. The interim bill is issued in February (calculated at 50 per cent of previous year taxes) and the final bill is issued in August. Both billings have two instalments, and penalty/interest is 1.25 per cent per month on any unpaid balance. It seems like a straightforward system. But it hasn’t worked so well for Scribailo. “I’ve been having a little problem with the Arnprior tax department,” she said. She says she didn’t receive her February 2016 bill, but did

Municipal Matters

The Home Fire and Life Safety Program promotes the installation and testing of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and educates the public in regards to the Ontario Fire Code requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in all homes. As well the program educates residents about the importance of preparing and practicing a home fire escape plan. In the upcoming weeks of June members of the Arnprior Fire Department will once again be knocking on doors asking for cooperation in order to inspect and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Firefighters will be dressed in Arnprior Fire Department uniforms and carrying proper identification. Derek Dunn/Metroland

Jane Scribailo says she hasn’t gotten her last three tax bills from the Town of Arnprior. But she has gotten late fee letters in the mail. get a letter about a month later saying she owed a late fee penalty of about $10. She called the town’s finance specialist, Karen Tourangeau, to discuss the issue. “Karen is helpful and very friendly,” Scribailo said. “She responds any time I’ve called. We have a good rapport.” The late payment was withdrawn and all was forgiven. Scribailo paid the first and second instalments of her bill, since she was emailed the due dates. Then, months later, another letter arrived in the mail saying she owed $10, this time for missing the third instalment. Scribailo called but was told she would have to pay the $10. She disagreed, and paid the third and fourth instalments because she was emailed the due dates. Then, months after the 2017 tax bills were sent out — and she didn’t get hers — she re-

ceived a letter in the mail saying she owed another $10. Scribailo got on the phone again, had the due dates for the first two instalments emailed, paid both and informed town hall she would not pay either late payment. “I don’t like paying interest charges. I don’t feel I’ve made a mistake. Someone else should take responsibility,” Scribailo said. “Why is the onus put on me to do their job? “Show me the proof it’s been sent out.” She still hasn’t paid the two late fees. But town hall has gotten proactive with her file, emailing her recently to say another bill is due. She called Mayor David Reid at one point during the saga but didn’t hear back right away. (He had passed the complaint to the tax department and assumed it was rectified.)

This year’s program is expected to reach 250 residences in the community and while this service is provided by the Arnprior Fire Department, residents should not wait for a knock on their door to have their alarms tested. It is every home owner’s responsibility to ensure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in place where required and operating properly. Test your alarms every month and change the batteries at least once a year or whenever the low-battery warning chirps. Do not remove the batteries for any other reason. Any questions anyone may have regarding smoke alarms or the requirement of carbon monoxide alarms can be directed to the Arnprior Fire Department Fire Prevention Office at 613-623-4231. Public split over parking at proposed French school DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Nerves were frayed during a recent public meeting over the new French Catholic school. During the June 12 regular council meeting, town planner Robin Paquette recapped the plan to build a Conseil des École catholiques du Centre Est school across Baskin Road from A.J. Charbonneau Public School. The school board bought the 10 acres of former farmland to create — in Phase 1 — a twostorey elementary school, about 20,000 square feet, with a 5,300-square-foot day nursery, playground and recreational facilities. Phase 1 will also include 40 parking spaces and seven school bus loading spaces. Phase 2 will see a slightly larger high school included with more recreation facilities. A soccer pitch, track, and football field are included in the drawings. Another 60 parking spaces will be added. The town had no say in purchases and plans to this point. It was the parking spaces that generated the most concern among those at the meeting. A retired police officer living in the adjacent subdivision said the road is too busy already. Vehicles stop to drop off kids at A.J. because there is little room in that parking lot, said David McClymont. To get by, cars are forced over the yellow line. With another school in place the dangers rise. “I can see a tragedy happening,” McClymont said. Baskin has no sidewalks or street lights. Mayor David Reid said council doesn’t want vehicles parked on Baskin Road, although they regularly do. McClymont said only sustained enforcement will deter drivers. Sally Rogers has the same concerns. She said it makes little sense to have two schools across from one another. Having three schools — Walter Zadow, the high school, and St. Joseph’s —

makes navigating that area difficult. “You might as well go around on foot,” Rogers said. Marie-Helene Crawford is in favour of the school. She said many other communities have school zones with clusters of schools. The French Catholic board has different school hours and ends a week earlier (also begins a week later). That means staggered times will prevent vehicles from both boards descending on the area at once. Year-end ceremonies will happen days apart. Some who spoke are familiar with a school zone in Barrhaven, and gave different opinions on how well traffic works there. The board’s architect talked about deep isles and throats to a distant parking lot that will keep cars off the road. McClymont interrupted to say cars will still park on the road. Crawford said they do on the A.J. side. “Somebody is going to get badly hurt,” McClymont reiterated. Reeve Walter Stack admitted to parking on Baskin to drop off and pick up his granddaughter over a five-year span. He said to get a spot would mean arriving 30 minutes early. “It’s a real hazard,” he said, adding that the French school’s proposal for 100 spots is too low. He also believes the school should have been located farther away. His last point was to say Ontario should have one system for two languages. It would be more cost-effective and kids could play together rather than be “segregated.” He won’t vote in favour of the new school. Coun. Lynn Grinstead favours school zones; it was done that way years ago. She says the current location is “the perfect place for it.” She added that A.J. should have drop-off lanes and more parking spots. Coun. Tom Burnette also drove his grandkids to A.J. and parked on the road.

They eventually talked, but to no avail. She tends to think small towns ought to have more of a “personal touch” and, like many companies do, will forgive late payments when even the slightest sign of frustration comes in from the customer. That hasn’t been the case in Arnprior. “I’m a little disappointed by that,” she said. She contacted Metroland Media thinking that a published story could lead to hearing from others in a similar situation. Reid said the town issues about 200 late payment letters per year. He wouldn’t speak to Scribailo’s case, saying she hasn’t given him permission to break her right to privacy. The town has ways to ensure bills are drawn up and placed in envelopes. They use computer verification because manually checking about 3,000 accounts is not practical. The bills are sorted in a box and taken to the post office.

Neither Reid nor Scribailo would rule out Canada Post being at fault. Yet it is odd that the mail carrier would get it wrong three times in a row for the same taxpayer. There will be no cancelling the late fee, Reid said. The rules are clear on issues such as this one. It is not for elected officials to pick and chose who to forgive and who to punish. “We don’t want any subjective decisionmaking,” Reid said. “If we made a mistake, our policy is to correct it. The bylaws and policies are very clear. And I abide by them.” He said the vast majority of smaller municipalities mail out tax bills. It makes more sense to do it electronically in large cities like Ottawa, but economies of scale are against Arnprior. The software company working with Arnprior is trying to create a model that, should enough municipalities buy in, would bring e-tax billing to small towns. It is at least a year away. He also said taxes can be paid through online banking or coupled with mortgage payments, or at town hall.

McNab/Braeside volunteer receives Governor General’s award TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

One of the nation’s highest honours was bestowed on Connie Legg on June 6. The McNab/Braeside resident received the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers at the township council meeting from Mayor Tom Peckett. Peckett said it was an honour to be requested by Governor General David Johnston to present the award. “One of the great things I enjoy about being mayor is I get to recognize and present things to various people in our community,” said Peckett to the large crowd of Legg supporters and family members. “This evening … I get to present a medal of recognition to one of our very, very deserving residents of McNab/Braeside, that being Connie Legg, who I have known for many years, who has donated of her time and herself for decades to help this community, this province and this country. She is an extremely well deserving person of this prestigious award.” After Legg thanked him for the kind words she admitted that she was disappointed she would not receive the award from the Governor General at Rideau Hall. That soon changed after a recent

by family and friends and celebrating the work of volunteers in our area,” said Legg. “I also doubt they would have let me speak at a fancy ceremony!” Legg has volunteered over the years

at the Arnprior Figure Skating Club, L’Arche, the Arnprior and District Family Health Team and with Hospice Renfrew. She was nominated by Helen McGregor and in the award application it notes that it is a well-known fact that Hospice Renfrew would not exist without Legg. “She is such a good volunteer, she was a founding member of the board of directors for Hospice Renfrew and she has done lots of stuff around Arnprior, McNab/Braeside and Renfrew,” said McGregor. “She is very good at all she does and she is always available for all kinds of stuff we have asked her. “She is full of life, energizing and she always helps out other people to get them going.” Jim MacKillican, was one of the founders of Hospice Renfrew along with Legg and he sponsored the nomination letter and calls her a leading light. “It’s just great that she is being recognized in this way, it’s a Canadian recognition, but still very important she be recognized locally because this community benefited so much from what she has she done,” said MacKillican. “She is really more than a volunteer, she has been a leader and she leads by example and this has encouraged other volunteers.

Her expertise in nursing and volunteerism has really been instrumental in the success of Hospice.” They credit the retired nurse as being one of the founders of Hospice Renfrew. She is the current chair and has been with the organization since it started 14 years ago and has volunteered over 6,000 hours. “Hospice is not about one person. I accept this award on behalf of all those who have spent many, many hours of volunteer time to ensure that the hospice would become a reality,” said Legg in her address to council. “Compassionate communities is a phrase used to describe communities where people out of kindness and compassion, care for one another. This is nothing new and is the way of life for people in most rural communities. McNab-Braeside is a prime example.” Legg told this newspaper she was quite shocked when she found out about the award. “When I first found out I was overwhelmed because I didn’t realized I had been nominated,” said Legg. “I had to contact Hospice to find out if it was real. I was incredibly honoured. It is so nice to be recognized for doing something you love to do.” Legg said she shared the award with her husband Doug for all of his support and calls palliative care a passion.

ADHS Redmen become Rapids SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Arnprior District High School (ADHS) has a new moniker. Formerly known as the Redmen, ADHS teams will now be called the Rapids. Following ongoing controversy surrounding the name and its connections to Canada’s First Nations, ADHS officials announced early this year they were working to come up with a new name, by way of a student vote. The choices included the Lumberjacks, Eagles and Pride. ADHS Rapids was clearly the premier choice, say officials. “I like that it has connections to our town’s geography,” said principal Tom Havey. “We are the town where two rivers meet. I like what the name embodies – it’s powerful, swift and not to be under estimated.” The school will officially launch the new logo this fall. The cost to update team uniforms will be covered

Relay committee

by the Renfrew County District School Board. “We are not clear on how much it will cost at this time because it has yet to go through the tender process,” said Havey. Many alumni and community members have been quite outspoken on both sides of the logo debate. “What’s interesting about it is I understand that change is hard for some people but we felt as a school, the time has come,” said Havey. There have been a few sketches and ideas on the new logo but nothing has been decided just yet. “It has to be attractive, something our kids are going to want to wear,” said Havey. “Something that makes it ‘pop,’ that’s what we are looking for.” For the past 10 years or so ADHS has undergone a gradual re-branding that has seen the removal of an image on the big gym wall of an Indigenous chief in headdress. Other images and logos have been removed, including spears on football helmets after the end of the 2014 season. With files from Tiffany Lepack

Councillors tell school boards to take responsibility for safety Continued from page 4

To him, staggered bells will mean two hours of traffic congestion rather than one. He won’t vote for the school either. Coun. Ted Strike is disap-

pointed that the promises and projections made when A.J. was built have fallen through. He is now hearing similar stories from the new proponents. “There has to be some responsibility for the school boards to look at safety too,” Strike said.

Coun. Dan Lynch, a former police officer, wants to see more enforcement to cut down parking on the street. Reid said education funding is a provincial issue and he will respect its jurisdiction, so won’t comment on the variety of school boards.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic Saturday June 24th 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

But when it comes to parking on the street, unless it is dealt with he won’t support a new school. “Unless we get them off the road it’s a non-starter for me,” Reid said. A.J. needs to live up to its promises; it must build more parking spots.

“There will be no high school until adequate parking is in place.” Stack reminded the crowd that up to 1,000 new homes could be built in that area over the medium term. “Think of the traffic then,” he said.

Baskin Road is the county’s responsibility. It has not commented on the proposal. French board representatives were in attendance. They will discuss the comments with Paquette before another report is brought back to council in future.

OPP celebrates grand opening of new detachment SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

“This is an important day for the OPP, an important day for the community, and an important day for the staff and members of the OPP detachment.” Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes was among those on hand June 9 to offer congratulations and celebrate the grand opening of the new Renfrew OPP detachment on O’Brien Road. The Stewart Street detachment had been used for almost 60 years and the detachment at town hall had been used since 1972. The facility is a unique partnership between the OPP and the County of Renfrew - the county owns the building and the OPP is its leaseholders. Shame on MP Gallant Ontario Hydro is taking care of business To the editor,

Shame on Cheryl Gallant! Her sole vote against the Paris climate accord in Parliament was not only wasted but also wrong for the constituents she represents. I don’t often write to my MP (I don’t get a response) but again, I have sent her an email expressing my disappointment at her 1 vote against 277 votes, in the House of Commons, supporting the Paris Agreement climate change motion. This number includes MPs from

her own Conservative party, including the new party leader Andrew Scheer. I believe the people of the Ottawa Valley are concerned about their environment and the welfare of future generations. In addition, we cannot ignore what is happening in the rest of the world. It is time that Cheryl gets over herself and her own agenda and starts properly representing the people that live in Renfrew/Nipissing/Pembroke. Jane de Snaijer

To the editor,

Amidst the harshest winter period, an Ontario Hydro employee knocked on my door in Lower Ashdad and informed me that Hydro will install a new electrical pole on my property. He asked my permission to conduct the work and soon enough a new, magnificent pole overlooked my residence. It holds numerous wiring and lots of mysterious items attached to it. However, their equipment left unprecedented damage on my lawn, magnified by the spring’s melting snow. My wife suggested calling Hydro and whisper a few words about it to the customer service rep but I rejected the idea and decided to fix it myself. Jim Hutchison has launched a new business called Hoverwolf, drone photography; the Burnstown businessman flies his drone at the Burnstown beach.

New Burnstown business embraces new drone photography technology TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Jim Hutchison’s new business Hoverwolf Aerial Photography is soaring, literally. The photographer, with 25 years of professional experience, is now looking at things from a different perspective, that of a drone. He flies a DJI Phantom 3, always by Transport Canada’s rule book, to capture a unique view of residential/farm land, family gatherings, roof inspections and other outdoor attractions people may want to get a birds eye view of. “It’s a fun and very unique way to capture something with the drone,” said Hutchison. He absolutely loves flying but was unable to get his pilots licence due to health reasons and says flying his drone is so exciting. He describes his maiden voyage over Burnstown, where he has lived for the last ten years. “I was awestruck looking at this beautiful slow moving video, I said to myself wow, it was jaw-dropping and gave me goosebumps,” said Hutchison. “It was a dream of mine come true, I am

finally flying like a bird.” He was professional photographer, with a day job, but his passion was taking photos of family’s, weddings and more. He says when economic downturn came in 2008; half the photographers he knew took a nosedive. He says he always had an interest in flying and thought it was a neat hobby and decided to look elsewhere. “With the advent of digital photography, the app ruined my career,” said Hutchison. “I decided to refocus when drone technology became affordable. The image quality is outstanding, the video is cinematic quality and it’s out of this world quality wise.” When the drone technology became affordable he proposed to his wife that if she bought him a drone then he would start to make money. The process got sped up when he was laid off from his day job in December of 2016. “That upped the timeline and accelerated effort on this,” said Hutchison. He was open for business April 1. One of the many services he offers his aerial photography of farmland/homesteads. “It shows pride of ownership and it is

something people can pass on,” said Hutchison. “That’s what it looks like from up there and we usually can’t see it from there.” Another opportunity new clients can use his drone photography for is real estate. “It’s a very unique means to show off the property, from a perspective never used before,” said Hutchison. “It shows aspects of the house in context of the neighbourhood. And it’s a very dramatic way of showing off the property.” It’s also a neat way to capture a special occasion. “How cool to do a fly over at a family gathering and get everyone to wave,” said Hutchison. He is a registered drone pilot with Transport Canada and works to ensure he complies with the new regulations. “I’m flying by the rules for commercial flyers,” said Hutchison. “I always do a pre-flight check because safety is the key, that is the bottom line.” He offers both edited video and printed photos of the drone footage. White Lake Marina supports doctor recruitment On Sunday June 4, the Arnprior and Area Physician Recruitment Committee (PRC) attended the Pre-Father’s Day Boat Test Day at White Lake Marina. Owners Pete and Andra Bettencourt gave a trial run to participants and donations were collected to support PRC. Despite some clouds, everyone who attended had a great time. There were bouncy castles for the kids,

a delicious barbecue provided by the Lions Club and the Prior Chestnuts were onsite giving rides. PRC chair Mark Nibourg enjoyed checking out the pontoon boats too. To top off the day Pete and Andra Bettencourt made a $300 donation to PRC. When asked why they chose PRC to benefit from their event Andra said “Our family was excited, in February of this year, to get a

call from Dr. Fishman’s office. “After many years of driving to Ottawa to use medical clinics, it is wonderful to have found a family doctor in Arnprior. The committee plays an important role in our community, and that is why we were happy to be able to support their efforts, and we look forward to supporting them going forward!” The committee expressed its thanks to White Lake Marina for their support.

Michael Runtz

This male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker will keep its wells open to ensure they fill with sap every day.

Sapsucker restaurants are open for business MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

When it comes to nature, it is never safe to generalize. For example, one cannot say that caterpillars only eat leaves, for while most do, those of the Harvester variety eat Woolly Aphids. And while most woodpeckers exhume insects out of wood or, in the case of Northern Flickers, out of the ground, there is one species that has a very different item on its menu. As the name suggests, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers eat the sap of trees. Sapsuckers are beautiful birds. Males have a bright red cap and throat and a black bib with yellow below it. Their back sports a striking black and white pattern, one that blends in rather well with a distinctive feature often found on the trunks of White Birches. That feature is a series of rectangular holes made by the woodpeckers to access the tree’s sap. While sapsuckers enjoy the sap of a number of trees, including Eastern Hemlocks and Speckled Alders, they are particularly fond of the sap of White Birches. Still, they do not randomly tap all birches. Instead, they find a particularly good tree and go back to it year after year. When the right tree is found they drill a series of shallow wells in neat rows on one side of the trunk. They also peel off any bark that might curl and block access to the sap. They return to the wells several times a day and after several days reopen them when they become plugged. Each year they drill new holes above those of the previous year. A filamentous brush on the end of the long, extensible tongue picks up the sap that pools at the bottom of the

wells. When the tongue is pulled back into the beak, the sap is removed before the tongue is reinserted into the well for another load. The sap wells provide food for not only their makers. A great variety of other animals also visit them for their sugar-rich offerings. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are regular visitors and these tiny birds would likely not arrive in northern regions as early as they do if not for the food provided by sapsucker wells. They regularly visit sapsucker wells all through the summer, with their young joining them as soon as they fledge. Recently in Algonquin Park I spent eight hours observing and photographing the visitors coming to a sapsucker tree. There were three hummingbirds, with one female sitting in the birch and chasing away any rival that approached the wells. Two Red Admirals and a Mourning Cloak came regularly. Joining the butterflies was a Nessus Sphinx, a day-flying moth that hovers at flowers. Numerous flies and wasps including two of the giant European Hornets also visited. The latter aggressively chased away any hummingbird that was feeding. Red squirrels, eastern chipmunks, northern flying squirrels, and even black bears and martens are known to exploit the work of sapsuckers. While sapsuckers defend their wells from other sapsuckers, they seem to tolerate smaller visitors quite well. Perhaps they do because while sap forms a big part of their diet, some of the insects also end up as meals. It seems these unusual woodpeckers enjoy crackers with their soup! The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca.

Arnprior dinner, dance to support spring flood victims DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Sonia Mullins-Forget is quick to say bagging sand is not her thing. But that hasn’t stopped her from finding a way to employ her talents to raise funds for those affected by this spring’s flooding. “I kept thinking, ‘What could I do?’ My strength is in fundraising,” she said, during

a sunny Saturday afternoon posting notices around Arnprior. She has partnered with the recently formed Arnprior Optomist-ic Women’s Club, along with area businesses and municipalities to host a dance at Nick Smith Centre later this month. The night of Friday, June 30 starts with a roast beef dinner and silent auction, followed

by live music from the band Roadhouse, then ends with food at 11:30 p.m., including desserts. A wishing well will also be on site for donations. Many door prizes and other opportunities will come up throughout the night. One area business, Arnprior Floor Covering, has issued a challenge to meet or exceed its $1,000 donation and silent auction prize.

Tickets to the dinner and dance (limited to first 100 people) are $40. Doors open at 6 p.m. To attend the dance and silent auction is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Music starts at 9 p.m. Mullins-Forget has organized numerous events in the area. To learn more about this one, email ArnpriorFloodAid2017@hotmail.com or call 613-851-8190.

Gilks Signs and Trophies celebrates 35th anniversary JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com

Four locations, several embroidering machines and thousands of satisfied customers are the hallmarks of Gilks Signs and Trophies’ 35 years in business. Gilks celebrated the anniversary with a barbecue and sidewalk sale on May 27. “That was the game plan, we always wanted to grow,” owner Karen-Ann Gilks said. The family-owned business was started out of her and husband Gary’s basement on Arthur Street, before moving to Second Avenue and then to a storefront on Daniel Street. In 2015, the business moved to its 7,800-square-foot showroom and factory on 74 River Road. They now have 17 embroidery machines on site. “We started with 1,200 square feet,” Gilks said. “We now have the space to really put it out. We have great parking, a nice showroom and great staff — that’s the main thing. Most of them have 10 to 30 years’ experience. This is the final location.” Gilks says the move allows them to display products better and process orders quickly. For Gilks, 35 years have created a lot of memories — some of them not so great, but she is able to look back at them fondly now. “Pulling all-nighters to have trophies and awards ready,” she said when asked about her strongest memories. “There are a lot of late nights when you run

Fun and learning through music at Camp Glissando this summer VICKI LUHTA

Camp Glissando is a week-long day camp that focuses on fun and learning through music. Campers are given the opportunity to sing individually and in a choral group, play many instruments including drums, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, violin and others, learn about basic music theory, styles, and composers. And of course there will be crafts and lots of games! A final showcase concert for family and friends will end the week. Camp Glissando, which runs at Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church, is now in its third year with many repeat campers. This summer we will be running two weeks in July. Week one

will be for ages 6–9 years and runs July 10–14. Week two will be for ages 10-14 years and runs July 17–21. Camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with a showcase concert each Friday. No experience is necessary. Those with experience will also find loads of new learning adventures. The program has many musically enriching opportunities that allow children to explore and learn music at any level. Camp Glissando is run by experienced professional music educators who value the importance, joy and fun of music in children’s lives. The Ottawa Valley Music Festival (www. ottawavalleymusicfestival.ca) is our sponsor. We are a non-profit camp

where all proceeds from the camp are donated to the Ottawa Valley Music Festival to help support their young musician initiatives. Cost for the week is $225 per camper, which includes all supplies, use of the instruments, all music, snacks and camp T-shirt. There is a family discount of $25 each for siblings. Spaces are still available! Visit campglissando.com for more info. Camp Glissando also runs a week long day camp for adults only! Why should kids have all the summer fun? Join us for a week filled with singing and sharing music. Our focus is on choral singing with mini sessions such as ‘We’ve Got Rhythm,’ ‘To Sight-sing or Not to Sight-sing,’ ‘The

Healthy Voice,’ ‘Can you Hear It?’ and more. You can also choose to have a private voice lesson if you wish. No experience is necessary, but if you have some that’s great! We can make music fun and enriching for any level. Camp Glissando For Adults runs the week of Aug. 21–25 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a showcase concert on Friday. Cost is $250, which includes all supplies, music, snacks, camp T-shirt and special Friday lunch! Visit campglissando.com or call 613-623-1180.

I hate to bug you but it’s flea season in the Prior Ctenocephalides felis or cat flea! Although there are over 2,000 species of flea, the most common is the cat flea, found on both cats and dogs. Fleas are responsible for a variety of problems from simple itching and infection to allergic skin reactions and tapeworms. The females always lay their eggs on your dog or cat. Once on your pet, the adult fleas feed vigorously but digest only a small percentage of ingested blood. The remaining ingested blood is excreted back onto your pet in the form of black fecal matter commonly known as flea dirt (looks like black pepper). Feeding stimulates egg-laying while on your pet and in just 30 days 10 fleas can multiply

Pet Talk

IAN STUPP into 250,000. The small white eggs do not stick to skin or hair but fall freely off your pet to contaminate bedding, flooring, carpeting, dog beds, even your vehicle if the pet

has been transported in it during the infestation. The adult flea represents only a small percentage of the infestation present in your home. The vast majority of the flea population is actually either in the egg, larval, or pupal stage, which cannot be seen. Effective elimination of fleas requires control at all levels of the life cycle. If you have a flea infestation, you must treat both your pets and your home. Flea infestation is a vicious cycle. Before you can effectively control and eradicate the fleas, you must understand a little

about their life cycle. In just 15 days, the flea life cycle is completed. If just one pet in a multiple pet home has fleas, then they could all have fleas. To get rid of the fleas for good you have to kill both the adult flea and their offspring. The adult flea is the most annoying stage. The adult flea is the most visible and feeds on the blood of your pet(s). The average female flea lays 25 eggs per day — up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. Flea eggs fall from your pet(s) into your home and the environment. Fleas lay all of their eggs

Most would agree that domestic abuse is an issue that affects family, friends and the community at large. It is also sometimes mistakenly labelled as a “woman’s issue,” a private matter. Certainly we are well aware that child abuse carries a legal responsibility, “a duty to report.” Yet there still seems to be hesitation to recognize that intimate partner violence affects everyone, in particular women. Stats Canada (20l4) has reported that 68 per cent of women who experience abuse turn to family and friends for support, and 26 per cent turn to their coworkers. Also it is reported that 70 per cent of women who are being abused do not report it to the police. Sadly, research clearly shows the trauma that women who have experienced intimate partner violence has similar effects to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The impact is often long term and include “feelings of detachment, being constantly on guard, nightmares, and avoidance behaviours: (Stats Canada 2014). These effects are not surprising given that 25

per cent of victims experience the most severe types of abuse which include sexual assault, choking, and threats with a weapon. As a parent, sibling or friend one might feel ill prepared to help and support. Often is it difficult to see a loved one experience such trauma. It is important to be aware that there are services that can help both the victim and those trying to offer support. In addition to our agency, Bernadette McCann House (wsssbmh. org), the Women’s Sexual Assault Center (wsac.ca), and the Victim Quick Response Program (victimservicesrenfrewcounty.ca) are also available to offer support to women who are being abused. Sometimes the best help you can provide is a listening ear. Also, voice that you believe them and it is not their fault. Just remember to offer them support that you can realistically provide, i.e. child care, a ride to an appointment, and encourage them to reach out to the above agencies. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please contact our voluntary agency, Bernadette McCann House, 24-7, at 613-732-3131 or 1-800-2674930.

Mark L’Abbe is presented with the first $50 of his prize after scoring a hole in one at the tournament. Mulvihill Insurance, represented by Jim Mulvihill, will get him the other $4,950. However, L’Abbe is handing the money over the heart institute.

Special guests at this year’s fundraiser include, from left, Hockey Hall of Fame coach Brian Kilrea, Ottawa Health Institute’s Brenda Rothwell and president Jim Orban, along with Kilrea’s long-time assistant coach at the Ottawa 67s, Bert O’Brien.

Rick Sullivan brought his drone along to take photos from high above the golf course.

Finishing first with 12 under par score are friends from Queen’s University’s 1980 engineering class. Dan Smith, left, is with David Reid, Ron Warburton, and Jim Tully.

The Madawaska Golf Club is back in full swing after a long winter of snow, ice and cold weather. The season had a bit of a late start, but the course is rounding into condition after the very wet spring and Martyn Munro and his staff have been very busy keeping ahead of the grass cutting and cleaning up the winter debris. Some changes include additional tree clearing on both sides of the 1st fairway as well as beside the 10th green and along both sides of the 11th fairway. The 17th tee is now fully operational after last year’s rebuild. The course conditions have jump-started the competitive season starting with the Kickers scramble on May 13. Frank Pecora, Harold Neumann and Steve Wilson were the opening day winners with a 3 under par score of 67. The opening day was held on May 15 and was sponsored by the Madawaska Club. Kevin Ryan and Matt Brown were the A flight winners followed by Dave Timms and Keith Blimkie in B flight. Dan Kennedy and Don Aaron were the C flight winners and the D flight winners were John Kohli and Jim Bonnar. Men’s day on May 22 was sponsored by the Madawaska Golf Club. Dan McCaskill and Ken Ledgerwood were the A flight winners. Andrew Moyes and Steve Marsh were the B flight winners followed by Dan Kennedy and Doug Parkin in C flight. Jamie Doer of Murphy’s Plumbing hits a lead single to begin the B championship game against Al’s Corner Store in Fitzroy Harbour on June 11. Al’s won the game 8-7 in eight innings, while Anderson Automotive won the championship over Shawville, 1-0.

Anderson Automotive Harbour Ball Tournament champions The Fitzroy Harbour Men’s Fastball tournament wrapped up on Sunday, with Anderson Automotive from the FHMFL winning the A championship with a 1-0 win over the Shawville league representatives in a very well played game of men’s recreational fastpitch softball. Adam Rueckwald and Shawn Ryan threw for Anderson’s while veteran chucker Earl Kearns threw for Shawville with relief from James O’Brien. In the B championship, Al’s Corner Store won 8-7 in eight innings over Murphy’s Plumb-

ing in what some are calling a controversial game. Danny Armstrong and Freddy Ross threw for Al’s while Mitch Taylor was on the slab for Murphy’s. Twelve teams participated during a beautiful weekend, which saw the eight Fitzroy league teams welcome four teams from other leagues from Carp (2), Shawville, and Bancroft. In other news, the bar at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre sold out of Bud Light during the weekend and thanks the teams for their support of the community association.

Is the dragon in you this summer? Are you up to the challenge? If the answer is ‘yes’ we present to you a Dragon Boat Festival inspired menu that will quench you thirst for excitement and adventure. The Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival in Arnprior on Saturday, July 22, will stimulate all of your senses. The sight of dragon boat teams competing to be the best, having fun, and being part of a real team experience. Hearing the roar and applause of spectators along the Madawaska River waterfront encouraging their favourite teams. The sound of the drummers sitting comfortably in the bow of the dragon boats exciting their paddlers to dig even deeper and to stay in stroke and keep eyes front. The taste and smell of food prepared by local vendors at Robert Simpson Park. The noontime lunch is absolutely wonderful to say the least, and timely of course, especially for the paddlers. The festival has something for everyone. The races start at 10 a.m. sharp at the starting line

near the weir on the Madawaska River, and finish 400 meters downriver near the beach were the two rivers meet. The youth races are held close to the noon hour. Then, at noon, join us at the gazebo at Robert Simpson Park for the Breast Cancer Survivor Flower ceremony, a real live lion’s dance performed by the Success Lion/ Dance Troupe, followed by a Tai Chi demonstration by the Kanata Chinese Senior’s Support Centre. At 3 p.m. enjoy the Music in the Park and the medal ceremony. All of this is certainly a family friendly guide to Arnprior’s third annual Dragon Boat Festival and it promises to be one of the highlights of Arnprior’s 150th celebrations. Looking for a sponsorship opportunity, our Dragon Boat Festival Organizing Team will help you create a high profile, feel-good connection with your customers, employees, and the community. Let’s talk. We are currently recruiting for community dragon boat teams, interested? Don’t be shy, be awesome and enjoy the adventure. For more information please contact Glenn Arthur at 613 623 7301 or email garthur@arnprior.ca.

Touch a Truck roars into Arnprior June 17 Start your engines, dig a path, make way for mighty machines of all shapes and sizes. It’s time for the fourth annual Touch a Truck and Meet a Machine on Saturday, June 17. The event is hosted by the Ontario Early Years- Arnprior Family Preschool Resource Centre (OEY) at the Arnprior Fairground (10 Galvin St.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year they have over 20 vehicles confirmed. “With the variety of vehicles there,

children of all ages just love to get up close and interact with them and they learn so much from the hands-on experience,” said Karina Dewar who is the early learning facilitator at the OEY. “Touch A Truck is a really fun event for everyone involved.” Admission is only $15 per family or $5 per person as organizers aim at keeping the event at a manageable price. “It’s affordable fun for the whole family,” said Dewar. Some activities, such as Dan’s De-

licious Dogs, cotton candy, an ice cream vendor and a lemonade stand, do have an additional cost, so remember there is no ATM on-site, so don’t forget to bring cash. Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo will be on hand from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. sponsored by Saylor Plumbing. There will also be a bouncy castle sponsored in part by Reid Brothers. Wes Shnob is donating his services and will help young and old rock on. Plus, Aamina Badran of Mississilli Faces will be face painting.

Aubrey, Brittany and Nash Saylor, left, from Saylor Plumbing, hand over a cheque for $2,340 to Karina Dewar and Julie Burns from the Ontario Early Years- Arnprior Family Preschool Resource Centre. Saylor organized a community yard sale on May 28 with all proceeds going to the centre.

Molasses held many uses and many memories for Mary’s family You could smell molasses at Briscoe’s General Store, once you got by the row of cookies in their tilted boxes at the front. There was no attempt made to shut out the smells that filled the store, and coal oil, rubber boots, maple cookies, rolls of yard goods, and of course, molasses aromas met you as soon as you opened the door. Mother didn’t want molasses that day, I would still head to the back of the store, where a pail sat on a narrow bench, with a tin ladle resting on a chipped saucer, where customers could fill little honey pails with as much molasses as they needed. And if no one was looking, I would run my finger onto the saucer, capturing some that had stayed with the ladle used by the last customer. Of course molasses filled all sorts of purposes at home. It would be poured into Mother’s homemade Boston baked beans, a recipe that was passed around Northcote, a recipe that was said to turn out the best baked beans in the entire county! All the time the beans were baking, Mother kept testing them with a spoon, and she would

add just a bit more molasses, until they were exactly as she wanted them. Soon the smell of the molasses overpowered the chunk of salt pork pushed down into the beans, and all you could smell was molasses. Father never considered his pipe tobacco ready to smoke until he had added a couple spoons of molasses. He bought leafs as big as fry pans, and he had a tobacco cutter attached to a board, which he used to cut the leaves into small pieces. And then with his bare hands he would mix the molasses into the tobacco. Of course, it all had to dry out before it was fit for

his pipe. So it was spread out onto a cookie sheet and put in the warming-closet at the top of the Findlay Oval. And there it sat, with Father running his hands through it until it was dry enough to smoke in his pipe. Sometimes Father would get a package of pipe tobacco at the store, but when he used it instead of what he mixed at home, it never smelled the same. You knew right away, there was no molasses in the bought package. It wasn’t unusual for one of us five children to come down with what was called the grippe. Of course, that wasn’t serious enough an ailment to call either Mrs. Beam or bring old Doctor Murphy out from Renfrew. So when it happened that one of us, or sometimes the whole lot of us, complained of a stomach ache, out would come the molasses. It wasn’t above Emerson to complain of what he would call “ a sickish feeling” just to be dosed with Mother’s special molasses treatment. It was a real treat, and no one complained when Mother mixed up a glass of cold water with baking soda and a spoonful of molasses. It fizzed up just like a drink from a bottle

of KIK bought at Briscoe’s General Store. Whether it did anything for a sick stomach was a good question, but it was certainly a ‘cure’ we all looked forward to. And every spring, just to give us what Mother called “ a good cleanout,” we’d be treated to one of her molasses concoctions. Not one of us complained, even when the drink sent us scurrying to the outhouse, which was its main purpose. Molasses went into muffins and cookies and was drizzled over bread pudding. A special treat for me was when Mother was using molasses in one of her many dishes, and I was allowed to lick the spoon. At a time when there was little money for special treats like store-bought ice cream, or even a box of Cracker Jacks, we could always count on a taste of molasses to take the sting out of those lean years, called The Depression. Warren Sparling In loving memory of a dear Husband, Father and Grandfather, Warren William Isaac Sparling who passed away June 13, 2007. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches, When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, living our lives without you, Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return, When we were all together, but with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. Our loved one is with our Saviour now, Where there is perfect rest, And there is comfort in the thought, That a loving God knows best. Until we meet again, Sadly missed and cherished Wife Florence and family

December 31, 1957 – June 15, 2016 Missing You Always You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye, You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still, In my heart I hold a place, That only you can fill. It broke my hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, A part of me went with you, The day God took you home. Your loving husband, David

February 13, 1985 – June 16, 2001 16 YEARS OLD… AND NOW 16 YEARS GONE You left us 16 years ago, on June 16, at just 16 years old. Looking back, we can’t believe that we are surviving this journey, this heart ache, this profound loss. We miss you every time we get together – and you’re not there. We miss your laugh, your voice, your hugs, your smile, but, we watch for the yellow butterflies – and they come. We laugh till we cry at the funny memories of you. Sometimes, we call each other “ya little bugger” and we catch a glimpse of you in each other’s smiles; and sometimes, when I sit at the piano, I can hear you singing along. We’ve learned to live without you, perhaps as we would learn to live without a leg. Do we miss you every single day – without a doubt. Do the scars of the accident still hurt – at times, very, very much. Do we wish every day we had never lost you – Every day. But, sometimes we can walk so well that people can’t notice our “limp”, because we know you’re still with us… in spirit, in memory, in our hearts, in our lives. And, so sometimes, just sometimes, because we’ve learned how we can DANCE! Loving you as much as the day you left us Sue and Katie Diotte, and Granny Plager

Renfrew County council stands up against violence At the May session of county council, a delegation from Bernadette McCann House appeared in chambers to ask for the support of councillors in their ‘Stand Up Against Violence’ campaign. The campaign was brought to chambers by Coun. Kim Love, who gave a brief introduction, then asked council and staff to join together for a group photo in support of the initiative.

tures have appeared on the website, Facebook, as well as several other media outlets. In addition, individuals and groups have made their own signs and sent selfies to the agency. Bernadette McCann House says that more than 500 people from across Renfrew County have participated, including families, sports teams, businesses, nonprofits, health professionals and churches.

STAND UP

Their goal is to reach 1,000 people photographed in support of the campaign. Erin Norris, a volunteer and public education co-ordinator at Bernadette McCann House, says, “If you believe violence is not acceptable in our community, please stand up.”

The campaign encourages the community to participate in the Stand Up Against Violence photo challenge. Community members can have their photo taken by an agency representative and pic-

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Consider listening rather than gossiping about others, Scorpio. Sit back and enjoy the conversation as it unfolds around you. You might be surprised by what you hear.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, get outside and enjoy the fresh air as much as possible. The great outdoors can provide a welcome respite from the daily grind.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you may be called on to host family or friends and will have to arrange all of those details. Recognize your strengths and delegate what you can’t handle.
