Pillar 5 will produce more products Continued from front

A large contract signed in mid June with a leading U.S.-based pharmaceutical company will see Pillar5 go from producing three different products to nine (including six new formulas). About 8 million bottles per year are produced; 24 million is the goal in three year’s time. Many in Arnprior consider the company a success by virtue of not having folded. A proud piece of local lore had Mayor Tommy Sullivan and a group in the 1950s head down to New York City to woo manufacturers. It worked. Among the companies impressed by the town that punched above its weight was Pfizer, made famous for producing the erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra. The plant proved the first of its kind in Canada. But when it shut down and took the little blue pills with it, few held hope for the local building and the jobs it housed. That’s when Rampton assembled a group of smart investors and experienced executives to purchase the facility, some six years ago. Their focus was to rapidly turn the facility into a competitive independent contractor. They managed to sign up existing customers, then secure a niche in “sterile ophthalmic” or safe eye washes. “So we basically saved the plant, really,” recalled Rampton, who grew up in nearby West Carleton. “It was supposed to be gone.” Strategic investments by federal and provincial governments, plus partnerships with

Canadian research-and-development and virtual companies, kept Pillar5 afloat during turbulent times. Community leaders are also feeling buoyed by the news, too. “On behalf of council and Arnprior residents, I would like to congratulate Pillar5 Pharma on the recent news of their expansion,” Mayor David Reid said. “Pillar5 Pharma, previously Pfizer, has been an Arnprior fixture for 60 years; so it is indeed gratifying to see them continue to thrive and be an extremely important part of our community.” Key is that the company has found a way differentiate itself from competitors in India and elsewhere. Rampton said Pillar5 offers just-in-time products that meet stringent quality and regulatory requirements set out by the Health Canada and the American Food and Drug Administration. Issues at other plants in the past have cost big pharma companies millions of dollars in sales, along with tainted reputations. Chief Operating Officer Jamie Moore said the company finds ways to improve speed and responsiveness. “Anyone who requires a rapid product launch, transfer, or solutions to complex technical challenges, can depend on Pillar5 DEREK DUNN/METROLAND to offer lightning-speed solutions,” Moore A Pillar5 worker oversees the production line at the pharmaceutical manufacturer’s said in a recent press release. plant. The company expects 100 per cent growth in sales over the medium term. Client privacy is strictly maintained, as per industry norm. So there is no revealing which products on the shelf are made at the Ottawa RE/MAX John Roberts Broker valley plant, if any. HALLMARK

Daniel Street South to join downtown in construction work Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

During an unprecedentedly busy construction season in downtown Arnprior, add another job - this time affecting the town’s main arterial road. Daniel Street South, near the

LCBO, will feel the affects of infrastructure and paving in the area later this year. Although two lanes will be maintained, both town council and staff agreed at the June 27 regular meeting that slowdowns are inevitable. “The reality is its construction season,” Mayor David Reid said.

“It’s the price of trying to get caught up in infrastructure.” The town was later the usual in asking construction companies to do the work, and the project will cost over a half million dollars more than budgeted for, but a plan is in place and the winning bidder Greenbelt Construction Company

- was to be contacted soon after council’s vote. After council approved the budget, staff began issuing tenders in January for the downtown revitalization project. The $10-million construction job occupied much of staff’s time. Hence it was late getting around to this smaller one, the $2.2 million reconstruction of Havey Street and construction of the Daniel watermain. Havey, which reaches Daniel east of the LCBO, will see a watermain replacement, sanitary sewer, and road reconstruction. Daniel, from Havey to Charles Street, will see a watermain replacement. A third part was to see work done on Daniel from Havey to Michael Street; that work will take place in future when revenue becomes available. Staff tendered for both projects due to proximity and similar scope of work, expecting a savings. The lowest bid came back about $500,000 over budget (reserves will cover it) for various reasons: additional costs linked to working on a very busy road; provincial government requirements; most companies have lined up their summer workload already; few companies can complete the work; federal

stimulus funding puts contractors in higher demand. A big reason to see the work done, according to Coun. Tom Burnette, a retired fire chief, has to do with increasing water flows to various hydrants, including those in future subdivisions. A delay could stymie growth, forestalling additional tax revenue. The work is expected to finish by fall. NOISE EXEMPTION

At the same meeting, council agreed to a request to noise exemptions for the company working in the downtown revitalization project. Cavanagh Construction asked to work overnight, likely breaking the noise bylaw, to complete work on time. Mayor David Reid explained the company must turn water off at crucial moments of linking pipes. If that happened during the day, water would be unavailable for long periods of time. It makes more sense for that to happen at night, he suggested, adding that he expects the company to move efficiently to reduce the inconvenience.

Community Living Renfrew 1000 ISLANDS BIG workers reach first agreement THE 5TH ANNUAL

BASS CHALLENGE JULY 9 - 10 Â? Â?  Â€Â‚ƒ Â? €Â„ Â…†€

About 100 developmental services workers with Community Living Renfrew County South have been waiting a long time for a wage increase. Now it appears one is within reach. The workers, members of OPSEU Local 472, have reached a tentative first agreement with their employer. The deal comes are 13 months of bargaining and a wage grid that has been frozen for nine years. OPSEU Local 472 member Derek Ouellette, chair of the bargaining team, is pleased with the outcome resulting from many months of bargaining: “This is a good deal, and we got to it with the continued backing of our members over a long stretch of 13 months, he said in a news release. “We started with an 89 per cent strike mandate, and that strength made us a force to be reckoned with. The two-year agreement beginning April 1, 2016 provides “significant improvements to wages, benefits and working conditions for members, including:

a $1.20-per-hour wage increase for all job classifications; 20 cents per hour retroactive pay for all employees for all hours worked from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016; job security, seniority and layoff and recall language; a comprehensive grievance procedure; a comprehensive process for requests and approval of vacation time; a new ‘sunset clause’ that removes letters placed on members’ files by the employer; movement through a wage grid that has been frozen since 2007. “I’m proud of the bargaining team for persevering and achieving this deal, said OPSEU president Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “All sides win here, and that’s what we want. Local 472 members work in Renfrew and Arnprior, supporting people who have developmental disabilities. They have been OPSEU members since August 2014. They held a ratification vote Monday in Renfrew.

Crunch time for postal negotiations, strike possible as early as Saturday

While negotiations continue between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), there is concern a disruption in service could occur as early as this weekend. Talks have been ongoing since last November. While there was muted optimism early this week that a new agreement could be reached, a breakdown could mean the postal workers could legally strike on Saturday, July 2. In a statement, Canada Post said it understands the impact a work disruption would have on customers “and are, therefore, doing everything possible to reach a negotiated settlement quickly.â€? However, a labour disruption remains a possibility, so Canada Post is asking customers to take precautions. “In the event of a labour disruption, Canada Post will not operate,â€? the statement says.

“Mail and parcels will not be delivered, and no new items will be accepted. Any mail and parcels within the postal system during a work disruption will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume. Canada Post notes many organizations have already communicated contingency plans to customers. To ensure delivery through Canada Post prior to a possible work disruption, customers were encouraged to send items before the end of this week. On Saturday, June 25, Canada Post tabled offers for the separate negotiations under way with delivery and plant employees. It maintains its offers are designed to “help reach agreements and avoid a work disruption. See WEEKEND, Page 11

OPINION

Connected to your community

Learning from the Brits T

here was quite the rift between generations when it came to the British vote that is taking them out of the European Union. While voters over the age of 50 voted strongly to leave, the majority of those under 50 were on the stay side, especially young‘uns under 24. Almost three-quarters of the population that must live the longest with the consequences of the vote marked a ballot in favour of remaining with the EU. Unfortunately, 64 per cent of the 18-24 age group did not bother to vote. If they had, judging by how their peers voted, the result could have been dramatically different. The young have a point when they interpret the vote as the older generation being more interested in their prejudices and trying to return the country to the past than supporting opportunities for their children and children’s children. But if they felt so strongly that their futures would be better as a member of the EU, why didn’t more of them make the effort to vote? Their apathy handed the victory to the stick-in-the-muds of the older generation. Youth in this country should be paying attention to what happened in the ‘old country’. Canadians could be facing a referendum on electoral reform and maybe on other important issues. Quebec could hold another referendum on separation. Heck, the way

globalization is taking over, we could eventually face a vote on whether we want to join the U.S. In such votes, it is the young people who have the most to gain and lose. Fortunately, there are some recent signs in Canada that they will be a force in future votes. After years of declining voter turnout and young voters being turned off politics, it appears things are changing. In the provincial election just over two years ago, this area’s returning officer Lewis MacDonald expressed delight in the number of first-time voters showing up at the polls. “Democracy is alive and well in the Upper Ottawa Valley, he declared. His impressions were echoed by federal electoral officials last October. As well as voting in large numbers, many young people became involved in the campaign, particularly in helping the Green candidate (a young person himself) and playing a key role in Liberal Jeff Lehoux’s surprisingly strong challenge to long-time incumbent Cheryl Gallant. Hopefully that level of engagement continues, for they need to be at the forefront of the decision-making if Canada is to stride confidently into the future. The last thing the country needs is to shy away from the promise of the future because its young allow those who fail to understand what those opportunities are to set the agenda.

There is plenty to be proud of as you celebrate Canada Day To the Editor: Happy Canada Day! As we gather with family and friends in our communities to celebrate, let us also reflect on our good fortune as Canadians. It is often said that our country embodies the principles of “peace, order, and good

government. We achieve this every day by engaging in our institutions and with each other in a respectful and courteous manner. Through these actions, we aim to demonstrate what the world can see - a country and a society that is a model of strength, diversity, and peace. Canada Day is an occasion when we all

Who would not be impressed and inspired by the talent and ingenuity of our fellow Ontarians? You have demonstrated true dedication to the vibrancy and health of communities, and – in spite of individual circumstances and shared challenges – you constantly seek to improve the pillars of sustainability: environmental stewardship, inclusive economic prosperity and innovation, and social and cultural inclusion. This is something of which we can all be proud.

Arnprior fire department promotes summer safe grilling The Arnprior Fire Department is continuing its annual Summer Safety Campaign by focusing on ‘Grilling Safety’ in July’s topic. “There’s nothing like outdoor grilling. It’s one of the most popular ways to cook food, notes Arnprior fire prevention officer Cory Nicholas. “But a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard,” he warns. “They can be very hot, causing burn injuries.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), July is the peak month for grill fires and roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. The thermal burns are burns to the skin caused by any external heat source. This may be in the form of a naked flame from an open grill, fireplace or house fire, a scald from steam, hot or molten liquid, or via direct contact with a hot

object such as a hot oven rack, hot cooking pan or hot barbeque components. The Arnprior Fire Department is asking all town residents to be fire safe and is using its summer safety campaign to remind them of essential safety tips to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. When it comes to grilling safety, follow the following simple tips and you will be on the way to safe grilling. Propane and· charcoal barbecue grills should only be used outdoors. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. If you detect a leak get the grill serviced by a qualified professional immediately. The grill should· be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and

CHARCOAL GRILLS

There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use. When you are finished grilling let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container. JESSICA CUNHA/METROLAND

CP line deal complete, public input meetings planned next up It was the end of the beginning of establishing a major trail network through Eastern Ontario. In 2011, representatives from the County of Renfrew, the County of Lanark and the Township of Papineau-Cameron got together to sign a Lease and Asset Donation Agreement, an important step to acquiring the CP Rail corridor lands, which will act as the backbone of the trail system. The agreement the parties signed is a detailed document that outlines the roles and responsibilities of each partner municipality, with regards to costs, maintenance and vision for the trail. On June 22 at Renfrew County’s administration building, the different parties assembled once more to re-enact that historic moment, the outcome of seven to eight years of hard work. Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet, chairman of the county’s development and property committee and chairman of the CP Rail Corridor Advisory Committee, said it has taken a lot of effort to get where they are today – the proud owners of 296 kilometres of Canadian Pacific railway lands from Smiths Falls to Mattawa – and there is still a long way to go before they realize the dream of converting it into a four-season recreation trail. “This has been a long journey, but we are finally here,” he said, thanking everyone, their staffs and respective councils for making this happen. “This is an exciting day,” Sweet said. “I wish to thank all those that have cooperated and worked together over the many years

leading up to today. This agreement is a momentous occasion for the County of Renfrew, the County of Lanark and the Township of PapineauCameron.” Taking part in the signing were Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, Warden Gail Code of Lanark County and Robert Corriveau, the mayor of Township of PapineauCameron, plus their senior staff. The partners will pay a total of $500,000 over three years for the CP land, with Renfrew County shouldering $360,300 of that cost. Emon said this is just the first step in developing a multi-use trail system. He said in Renfrew County, there will be a series of public consultation meetings about the trail plan, starting in the fall, as this will be an important component in shaping the development of the corridor. Through these they will get a better ideas of what the public wants in terms of the trail system, as well as a means of working out any problems or concerns which may arise about it. The main debate appears to revolve around whether vehicles such as ATVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles should be allowed to share the trail with more passive users. Emon said there is also a lot of work that will have to be done regarding railroad structures such as trestles and bridges, to make them suitable and safe for public use. Many of these will require such things as the installation of handrails, and all of these will be inspected to ensure they are structur-

SKS on CBC Radio One

Someone Knows Something (SKS) returns to CBC Radio One beginning June 27. Produced by CBC Radio One and launched as an original podcast in March 2016, the program examines unsolved cases of missing or murdered individuals. Hosted by award-winning filmmaker and writer David Ridgen, originally of Arnprior, each season focuses on a single Canadian cold case with the hope of uncovering new information, while also exploring how the case has affected families and communities. This season, Ridgen explores what happened to Adrien McNaughton, a five-year-old boy who disappeared without a trace near a lake near Calabogie more than four decades ago. The podcast rose to the number-one spot on the iTunes Canada podcast charts. The 30-minute weekly Radio One program runs Mondays at 9:30 a.m.

Canada Post said the offers would “allow greater flexibility to better serve customers while protecting the things that are most important to employees.” Among the items in the offer: There is no change to the pension for all current employees and their job security remains unchanged. All employees would see an increase in their take-home pay. Future hires would receive a Defined Contribution pension plan as part of a new, competitive compensation package that would apply to those we hire or make permanent going forward. This approach is necessary to help address the pension challenge in the long term. It’s also the approach in place for most employees who have recently joined Canada Post. With Canadians shopping online 24/7, the offer would allow Canada Post to establish temporary and part-time jobs to better enable us to deliver parcels on weekends and evenings. This would not only provide greater flexibility, especially during peak times, it would also help us manage costs and keep our prices competitive. The current approach of providing this service while paying double-time is not financially sustainable. In addition, Canada Post has included more flexible size specifications for Neighbourhood Mail to respond to requests from businesses and marketers for more options. In response, CUPW has balked at some of the weekend provisions. It is also seeking better pay and conditions for rural mail-carriers.

Wetlands harbour many treasures for the avid naturalist When summer’s heat arrives, many people head for water. I also visit wet places but never to swim. The wet places I seek are often not lakes or rivers but swamps and peatlands, places you never would dive into. The reason I visit these wetlands is they are full of fascinating plants and animals. Recently I led a Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club outing to one of the most exciting wetlands in our area. We visited the White Lake Fen, a wetland home to a number of rare inhabitants. Fens are peatlands, habitats created by sphagnum moss forming a floating mat over water. Bogs are also peatlands, and separating the two is not easy. Some authorities state that sedges dominate fens while sphagnum moss dominates bogs. Others state that pH is the main difference, while others declare the total diversity of plants to be the key. But the best defining characteristic is how water-borne nutrients arrive in the peatland: if by rainfall only, it is a bog; if carried by groundwater or flowing streams or other waterways, the peatland is a fen. Fens tend to be richer in nutrients and the White Lake Fen is

MichaelRuntz Nature’sWay very rich indeed. Orchids abound and not only in the open fen. To reach the fen, we bushwhacked through a mucky, dense, cedar/fir/spruce swamp. Although physically demanding, the effort was well worth it for we passed by many interesting plants including 200 Showy Lady’s-slippers (the official emblem of the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club) - all in peak flower. The fen was also alive with orchids. Hundreds of Rose Pogonia dotted the floating mat and a lesser number of Grass Pinks, one of my favourite wildflowers, were also in bloom. See ORCHIDS page 15

This Broad-winged Skipper frequents wet sedge meadows, but it often gets nectar from wildflowers growing along roadsides near its habitat. Right: Showy Lady’s slippers, the emblem of the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club, are blooming profusely this year.

A highlight of a recent White Lake Fen visit was this Brushtipped Emerald, a more northern dragonfly.

Orchids in bloom by the hundreds Continued from page 14

Both of these pink orchids look as if they have loads of pollen to offer bees, but the pollen-like masses are a ruse, and when a bee visits either orchid it leaves empty-legged. This year about a hundred White Bog Orchids, which have the unique distinction of smelling like cloves, were also in full bloom. Above and around us hordes of dragonflies patrolled the air. Many of the large ones were Prince’s Baskettails, and there were also many smaller Racket-tailed Emeralds. Brilliant green eyes characterize all of the Emeralds, and a few species including the Racket-taileds are common locally. But I also netted a Brush-tipped Emerald, a more northern species. Until the fen trip I had never encountered this species south of Algonquin Park. After our fen visit was over, I explored wet-

lands along the Bellamy Road. That road is one of my favourites for it meanders through uninhabited country, and is replete with wet meadows, ponds and streams. Many species of skippers - thumb-nailsized butterflies - inhabit sedge meadows, and they were my focus. My highlight was a Broad-winged Skipper, a butterfly near its northern range limits here. As skippers and many other butterflies get nectar from flowers growing along roadsides, I wonder if spraying for Wild Parsnip in Lanark County will have negative consequences for them. That day the temperature soared to 32 ºC, but I never felt hot. How could I when visiting some of the coolest habitats in our area! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Harry with the Heaves held a special place in Mary’s heart Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

Heaves was no longer able to do any farm work, and my sister Audrey said the only reason he was still kept around, was because Father knew how much I loved the poor old horse. He didn’t eat much, which maybe helped too. Harry with the Heaves didn’t move around like the other horses, preferring to stand at the fence behind the barn, resting his head on the rails. Every day I would put a halter on him, and walk him very slowly around the barnyard. We wouldn’t be gone a dozen steps, when the heaves would start. They seemed to come right from his hooves. And I would stop and let him heave away until the spasm passed, and then we would walk around another few steps, with his head getting lower and lower to the ground. The few times we hitched him to the

and I knew perfectly well what their fate was. But Harry with the Heaves lived on, contributing nothing to the work load of the other horses, just living day by day with his condition getting worse right before my eyes. And then one day, when I came home from school, I couldn’t see Harry with the Heaves anywhere. I thought he may have wandered into the field behind the barn, but no, he wasn’t there. I may not have been the sharpest knife

in the drawer, just like my brother Emerson said, but no one had to tell me that Harry with the Heaves wouldn’t be around any more. Nothing was said about his missing. Not a word from Father, the brothers...no one said a word. NEVER EXISTED

He was just gone. And I knew, without anyone telling me, that my beloved horse was no more. Not a word was spoken about his end. It was as if Harry with the Heaves had never existed. A deep sadness came over me. My horse was gone. Like so many disappointments, and sad happenings on the farm, there was no discussion…no explanation. It was thought the less said the better. I cried for Harry with the Heaves only when I was alone. And I prayed wherever he had gone, he would be hale and hearty, running around with other horses, eating the finest hay and oats, his back in shape, and the heaves a thing of the past. To ease the pain in my heart, I had to believe it. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? buggy, it was like we were giving him a new lease on life. There were strict orders from Father not to run Harry with the Heaves... just let him move at his own pace, which wasn’t very fast. But I could tell he loved pulling the buggy. And we would circle the barnyard a couple times, until he could no longer breathe easily. But it was enough to make the old horse feel he was needed, even if we really weren’t going anywhere. Other sickly animals would just disappear,

My brother Emerson said I wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer when it came to the farm animals. Except for the cows, which I wasn’t too fond of, I wanted all the others for pets. Emerson said if I had any brains, I would know that you didn’t raise livestock for pets. Eventually, they would go off to market, or end up in the smoke house! But I tended to put those thoughts out of my mind. Even after my pet black lamb ended up on the supper table one night, sending me into hysterics and turning me against lamb for the rest of my life, I still thought I could make pets out of the farm animals. Even though I wasn’t too fond of the cows, I loved the calves. It was no chore for me to feed a sickly calf from a bottle, until it was able to feed itself. Holding a screeching baby pig, with its soft body feeling like that of a real live baby, filled me with the utmost joy. And then there was poor old Harry with the Heaves. He was never called just plain Harry. It was Harry with the Heaves. Harry was a horse that had been around the farm long before I was born, and I loved him with a passion. Apart from the heaves, he had a sway where you could rest a couple bags of grain if you were so moved, and that was why he had the heaves, Father said. Harry with the

Speeders a concern on several roads in McNab-Braeside The Renfrew and Arnprior OPP are speaking out after fielding several complaints recently about drinking and speeding drivers on local roads. The OPP is urging drivers not to drive dangerous just because these are the carefree days of summer. The OPP notes it will be increasing patrols and strictly enforcing the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario in regards to aggressive driving behavior after receiving several complaints. Several streets in McNab-Braeside seem to be attracting speeders, people not stopping at stop signs, and drivers not sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, report police. Areas of concern are Moore Street, Fairhaven Place, Kippen Road, Campbell Drive, Braeloch Road and River Road. “Aggressive driving includes speeding, not stopping at stop signs, failing to signal lane changes, not providing cyclists a minimum distance of one metre when passing, and failing to yield to pedestrians,” stress police. “If these actions describe your driving, consider changing your behavior to avoid being ticketed.” The OPP in Renfrew laid charges against five people in the past week for impaired driving. All investigations began after concerned citizens contacted the OPP to report the crime. No one was injured in any of the instances. On June 20 at 11 p.m., officers attended Silver Lake Road for a three-vehicle collision. One driver attempted to back out of a driveway, struck a vehicle and pushed it into a third vehicle. The male driver was arrested for impaired driving. Following breath tests at the detachment a 48-year-old Greater Madawaska man was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 mgs, and dangerous driving.

On June 21 at 7 p.m., officers received information about a possible impaired driver. The suspect vehicle was located on Mountain Chute Road and the male driver was arrested. Following breath tests at the detachment a 41-year-old Greater Madawaska man was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. On June 22 at about 12:50 a.m., officers responded to a single vehicle collision on Calabogie Road in Greater Madawaska. The female driver had been drinking, allege police. Following breath tests at the detachment, a 26-year-old Renfrew woman was charged with impaired driving. On May 29 at about 3:26 p.m., OPP officers were dispatched to a traffic complaint heading westbound on Highway 17 towards Arnprior. Several calls were received about a possible impaired driver. When officers arrived at Highway 17 and McCallum Drive in McNab-Braeside, the suspect vehicle was stopped, along with several witnesses. The 51-year-old female driver from Ottawa was arrested for impaired driving. Following further breath tests at the detachment, the woman was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. SEAGULL KILLED The OPP are appealing for witnesses to come forward after responding to reports of a youth killing seagulls with a golf club. The youth was in a parking lot across from Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) on Thursday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m. At least one dead seagull was located. There is a suspect in the case, but if no witnesses come forward no further action can be taken. OPP Constable Jeff Cassidy is leading the investigation. Call him at 1-888-310-1122 if you have information that can assist in this case.

It was among the larger honour rolls in recent memory in the graduating class of 2016 at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Arnprior. However, it was the presentation of a new award, Catholic Graduate, in honour of the memory of former student Grace Olivia Glofcheskie, that proved one of the most moving moments of the evening on June 22. The award was given to Tassia Anas, by Grace’s parents Gerry and Nancy Glofcheskie. Grace was class co-valedictorian in 2005 before going on to become a high achiever in high school and Guelph University. Her death at the hands of a careless driver in Guelph made national news last December. AWARD WINNERS

This year’s valedictorian, Hayden Lacasse, was also among the five academic award winners, and one of two school council leadership award winners. Other academic winners were Ben Whittington, Lauren Herter, and Kate Katchum. Brianna MacAulay won the Joan Bond award for perseverance. Trinity Berube won the Sue Hor-

top award for compassion and hard work. The four-way award for school spirit went to Hannah Ryan and Soleil Haughton. Most improved was Victoria Smith. Peter Hessel to give reading in Arnprior July 8 Karen DeLuca

Arnprior Public Library

Peter Hessel was born in Germany and grew up under the Nazis. His autobiographic account, ‘Hitler’s Boy’, was published in German and English. The book tells the story of the mind-bending and brainwashing he was subjected to in the Hitler Youth, in school and at home. The author, who has lived in Canada for 55 years - 25 of those in the Arnprior area - will be reading from this book at the Arnprior Library on

PETER HESSEL Friday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m. When Peter lived just outside Arnprior, he took an interest in local history, wrote a few books on the subject and took great pleasure in helping to establish the Archives

in the Library Building. Peter has written a total of 13 books. For 10 years, he also penned a weekly syndicated humour column called ‘Peter’s Point’, which appeared in newspapers across Canada. He may also read a short example from that time. Peter is now living in Germany again, although he frequently travels to Canada. He will be 85 in August, but he is by no means inclined to slow down. Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

Monthly Column – June 2016 We sure could use some rain. As of the writing of this column (June 24th), I would suggest we’ve been experiencing the driest weather since 2012. Some gentle rain would do wonders for the farmer’s fields and people’s lawns, not to mention ease the risk of forest fires. Hopefully we get some soon.

Peter Hessel is currently writing a book about his immigration to Canada and his first year in the Ottawa Valley in 1952. books by other authors from English into German and especially from German into English. In his spare time, he is writing a book about his immigration to Canada and his first year in the Ottawa Valley in 1952. It will be impossible to stop him from reading an episode from his manuscript for which he will ask the audience to pick a title.

Peter - who is still a proud Canadian citizen - has also contributed to Canada’s development in another fashion. His five children, five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren were all born in Ottawa and all live in Canada. Needless to say, Peter will be very happy to meet you, shake hands with you and autograph a copy of his latest book for you.

The legislature has recessed for the summer and after some resignations, the first thing Premier Kathleen Wynne did was to shuffle and rejig her cabinet. This cabinet shuffle has been done with one goal in mind – to present a fresh face and prepare for the next election in 2018. We knew this shuffle was coming, but what should concern the people of Ontario are her motivations for doing so. As I said, this was all about election planning and satisfying the remaining MPPs. We now have the most bloated cabinet in Ontario’s history. Of 56 Liberal MPPs eligible, 30 are now in cabinet. As far as I can tell, for the first time ever there are now more MPPs in cabinet than there are on the government back bench. She created three additional ministries to accommodate her members. At a time when we are supposed to be saving money on government, this does anything but. For each new cabinet minister there is a deputy minister, typically at least one assistant deputy minister, a chief of staff, senior policy advisors, an MPP Liaison… I think you get where I am going here. The cost of establishing a new cabinet post is huge, and not something Ontario can afford while running deficits. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether or not creating more positions in cabinet brings better governance to the Province of Ontario, or just larger paychecks for Liberals and their friends. Here at home, construction season is well underway and there are a number of road and highway projects ongoing throughout the riding. Whenever there is construction, it affects the flow of traffic. I know it can be frustrating but once the work is completed, as I am sure you would agree, it is all worthwhile. I urge everyone to leave a little more time to ensure that their commute is safe for everyone, including themselves, and the people working hard on those road construction sites. Recently, we were pleased to work with the Ministry of Transportation, the Town of Petawawa, and the contractor Miller Paving in altering the work schedule on Highway 17 west of Forest Lea Road to allow traffic to flow more freely. A couple of family related notes, I am grateful for the many people who have contacted me offering their thoughts and prayers for my nephew Mark Yakabuski, who was seriously injured in a freak golf cart incident on May 20th. Mark is a wonderful husband and father of three who is very active in the Stittsville community – particularly with minor hockey. He faces a very long and challenging road ahead, and your continued prayers and support are greatly appreciated. Personally, I am scheduled for hip surgery on July 18th, which will take me out of action physically for a period of time. In sporting terms, I’d be on the PUP list (Physically Unable to Perform). However, it will not affect the operation of my office, and I will be continuously available by phone or email while I am recovering. I regret that I will miss some significant summer events in your communities, but I hope you recognize that there is no convenient time to do these kinds of things. But just like road construction, when it’s all said and done I am sure it will be worth it! With July 1st approaching, I encourage everyone to get out and celebrate how fortunate and blessed we are to live in Canada. While we face many challenges, and always will, there is no place in the world I would rather call home. While I might be biased, I also believe we live in the best part of this great country. HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL! LET’S CELEBRATE! Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, June 30, 2016 25

Car show/wash success please humane society Staff

The Arnprior and District Humane Society is so pleased with response to its inaugural car show/wash fundraiser, it is making it an annual event. Society director Brian Gunn said some changes will likely be made to promote the event, but the date (the day before Fathers Day) and the venue (Arnprior Fairgrounds) will remain the same.

There will also be a barbecue and entertainment, which went over well, he said. The car show attracted 32 entrants and the car wash earned about $700. In all, a couple of thousand dollars was raised for the society’s no-kill shelter in Arnprior. “We thank all our sponsors and volunteers, as well as the visitors and participants in the event,” he said. “We’re looking forward to an-

other successful show next year … and hope it gains public support again.” He said he will do more to promote the event next year, particularly with classic car owners at the area’s cruise nights. The next major fundraisers for the humane society will be the Putts for Paws golf tournament at Mountain Creek July 29, another paint nite at the John St. Pub Aug. 10 and the annual walkathon and pet wash on Sept. 11.

Free fishing weekend features kids derbies July 2, 9 in Arnprior Staff

There are two kids fishing derbies planned in Arnprior to take advantage of Ontario’s Family Free Fishing Week. The week when people in Ontario can try out the sport of fishing without a licence runs July 2 to 10 this year. It coincides with National Fishing Week. The Arnprior fishing derbies will be held on the next two Saturdays, July 2 and 9. The second annual Arnprior

Kids Fishing Derby, organized by Darren Wood, will be held this Saturday, July 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McLean Park on the Ottawa River. All young entrants will receive a prize for participating in this “free family event.” As well there will be prizes for top three heaviest fish caught in the ages 7 and under and 8 to 13 categories. Prizes include trophies, two-man inflatable boats, a camping weekend and more. There will also be free hotdogs, pizza and drinks for young anglers

while supplies last. Wood promises that a special guest, a Canadian Hall of Fame angler, will drop in on the derby. “Don’t have tackle? Never been fishing but still want to participate? No problem,” he says. The derby will be playing host this year to the Tackle Share program initiated by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunter and now sponsored by Ontario Power Generation. The program allows young anglers to borrow a rod, reel and tackle for a day of fishing.

Organizers “strongly advise” pre-registration so they can ensure there are enough gear, prizes and food to go around. Forms can be downloaded from www.facebook. com/arnpriorkidsfishingderby or by emailing arnpriorkidsfishingderby@gmail.com. The Arnprior Fish and Game Conservation Club is not involved in the derby this year, but is presenting its own Summer Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 9. The derby will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the clubhouse at 3399

Leo Lavoie Rd. near where the Madawaska River flows into the Ottawa. Everyone is welcome for a free barbecue and gift bags for all participating children. Again, as it is being held on free fishing weekend, fishing licences are not required, notes organizer and club member James Kucharik. Bait and fishing rods will be supplied for those who need them, he adds. For more information, call 613623-1895 or email arnpriorfishandgame@gmail.com.

A Scottish celebration Fourteen-year-old Ian Wyllie, of Kanata, tries his hand at the caber toss, a traditional Scottish sport during the Scottish Festival at Waba Gardens and Museum in White Lake on June 26. Top left, Braeside’s Basil Richardson tries on an officer’s garb. Organizers were delighted by the attendance, which was up substantially from last year; the sunny skies were a big plus. The event included performances from the Arnprior McNab Pipes and Drums, the Campbell School of Dance, Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums and more.

Piping good time at Waba Cottage The families of piper Bob Smith Jr. and columnist/naturalist Jim Ferguson were present at the McNab Days Scottish Festival Sunday at the Waba Cottage and Museum grounds for the tribute to the two men, who gave so much to the festival and their communities. As well as musical tribute, certificates presented on behalf of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, who couldn’t attend the ceremony. Below, from left, are Boyd MacLaren, co-chair of the festival; Jim’s son Cory Ferguson; Brenda and George Smith; Brian Armsden, McNab-Braeside deputy mayor; and emcee Mackie McLaren. Above, action during the popular performances of the four massed bands. Included were pipe and drum bands from Arnprior-McNab, Renfrew, Kemptville, and the Bytown Celtic Heritage Society. Despite the heat, they enthusiastically performed for the appreciative crowd.

BIRTHDAY

Her father’s little princess, Her mother’s baby girl, Her sister’s greatest confidante, Her brother’s cultured pearl. A loving, caring, smiling girl. A beauty from the start, The music she loved, her dearest friend, a country girl at heart. Life is like the giant waves, That dip and curl and spin, We sometimes get caught up in that, and feel we just can’t win. Why did those waves take her away? I guess we’ll never know. She had built a wall around herself, And let her troubles grow. And now she’s in a greater place, In God’s loving gracious arms, An angel watching over us, A precious, priceless charm.

DAVID ELMER Passed away on June 23, 2016, after his journey with ALS. Loving husband of Cathy for 41 years. Loving dad of Tammy, Janie and Casey Kidd (Brad). Treasured Poppa of Shanna, Brooke and Briagh. Survived by his brother Carl. He will be sadly missed by in-laws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends including the Garden of Eden Road (Wayne, Sharon and Rhonda) and Karen Wall. David was predeceased by his son J.T. and parents, Elmer and Margaret (Hodgins). Raised in Bryson, Quebec, David was a retired employee of the Portage Pulp and Paper Mill after which he took up residence at Valley Automation and Control. He loved the outdoors and spending time with friends and family. Being a grandpa was his crowning glory as his granddaughters were the apple of his eye. Always being outnumbered by women, Dave couldn’t have been more thrilled when Brad came into the family. After being diagnosed, in true Dave Wall fashion, he continued to live each day to the fullest by taking hunting and fishing trips with his buddies and a lifelong dream trip up north to the Yukon with his #1, Cathy. David was a great man; husband, father, poppa and friend whom some called a legend. He was always welcoming and friendly to anyone who crossed his path and people always felt better after spending a bit of time with him. A special thank you to the ALS Clinic in Ottawa, Dr. Bodig and the nurses at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Visitation will be held at Anderson Funeral Home, 22 Raglan Street South Renfrew, on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm and again on Monday after 12:30pm. Liturgy of the Word will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Renfrew on Monday June 27, 2016 at 2pm followed by reception in the parish hall. Interment will be at 4:30pm at St. George’s Anglican Cemetery, Campbell’s Bay, Quebec. Those desiring may make donations in memory of Dave, to the ALS Society, or Renfrew Victoria Hospital, online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com

New cycling group forms in Renfrew County A new organization that brings together and provides a voice for cyclists, hikers, walkers and paddlers in the Ottawa Valley recently its first public ride and meeting at Ma-Ta-Way Park in Renfrew. In partnership with the Renfrew Pinnacle Pedallers, the Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance (OVCATA) invited everyone in local communities to ride in support of the two rail trails that meet in Renfrew and then to meet for introductions and an information-sharing session. There has been growing interest in cycling and active (non-motorized) transportation, reads a press release, and until now there has not been a single, organized voice for these activities in the Ottawa Valley. This past winter, a group of

friends who had come to know each other through an informal network of cycling and active transportation (AT) advocates decided to form OVCATA as a membership organization. Riders met at Ma-Te-Way Park June 5 and chose to ride either of the rail trails that intersect there (mountain bikes) or went for a ride on area roads. Then there was a public information session hosted by the new organization. The OPP ran a bike rodeo at the park. There, young riders observed traffic indicators, balancing skills, bike rules and more. Debbie Fiebig, of the Pinnacle Pedallers, is pleased that the new Alliance has formed. “It goes well with our work here. We’re seeing a big wave of enthusiasm for cycling in our area, and it’s great that we

can hook up with like-minded people from all over the Valley.: The Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance was founded, according to cochair, Ish Theilheimer, to be “a voice for cycling and active transportation. We want to educate and advocate for the interests and safety of all cyclists and everyone who participates in AT.: Co-chair Shawna Babcock has been active promoting AT in Renfrew County for years and has been co-chair of the County’s Active Transportation Working Group as well as the Physical Activity Network of Renfrew County. She is enthusiastic about the formation of OVCATA because, “it will bring people together in support of better infrastructure, education and resources for AT, which will

Bluegrass festival set for July, donates to health care Valley Bluegrass Festival is preparing for its 22nd annual Festival in Horton. Its original mandate was to donate the excess funds after expenses to the Victoria Hospital Foundation to be earmarked for the purchase of various medical equipment. “For the last number of years we have also added a donation to Hospice Renfrew, in our opinion is a very necessary addition to health care in our community,” reads a press release from the Valley Bluegrass committee. “We as a community organization have become known throughout Ontario, Quebec, and many areas beyond as one of the

premier bluegrass festivals in Canada, and are proud to be able to donate thousands of dollars over the tenure of the festival to much needed dollars for health care in the Renfrew area. “Thank you for the service you provide for palliative care throughout the area surrounding Renfrew,” said the committee, which includes Arnold and Barb Dickson, Bob and Julie Johnston, Darrell and Carole Mooney, and Kevin and Shelly White. The family-oriented festival will be held July 7 to 10 this year on the Johnston farm at 408 Castleford Rd.

The lineup includes the Larry Stephenson Band from Tennessee, Lost t & Found from

Virginia and the Ottawa Valley’s own Concession 23 along with many more.
