Building replacements in McNab-Braeside has become much more than simply an issue of bricks and mortar and how much to spend on each. The decisions made will have a long-term effect on how township residents see themselves and their community. A special council meeting was held June 30 to discuss buildings. All but Coun. Scott Brum were present, and it soon became apparent his view will be crucial going forward. That’s because Mayor Tom Peckett and Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden want pretty much the same things: replace existing buildings with more or less the same. That means the size and scope of current recreation centres in White Lake and Braeside should be replicated in the upcoming design process. Councillors Mark MacKenzie and Heather Lang prefer

TOM PECKETT to see fewer dollars directed at the villages in favour of spending on a more centralized, larger project. The one area all councillors agree on is the need to hear from residents. Armsden, who oversees project developments in his day job, started off the meeting by saying staff should state their needs before a town hall meeting is called. He wants to hear specifically from public

works director Ryan Frew and recreation director Geoff Patterson. Peckett said he is for a “visioning exercise” but also wants to see progress. With that in mind, he said a decision on the salt and sand shed in Braeside should be relatively simple. The question is whether to build a new one in the current location near the fire hall or on the recreation centre property. MacKenzie said locating it at the latter site will impact the location and function of the future recreation centre. But that discussion hasn’t happened yet. Armsden said the property is large enough to have the shed and trucks coming and going without disturbing residents at the Braeside recreation centre. It will also afford the fire department the opportunity to expand at its location. See BRAESIDE, page 2

Domed shed
Peckett described a dome-shaped “inverted football” shed, saying the semi-circle structures are deemed too dangerous. It will likely be concrete with canvass. The current one is steel, made prematurely rusty for holding road salt. The discussion turned to the Braeside recreation centre and the basketball court-sized meeting room. Peckett was quick to say there won’t be a basketball court in the new centre, but that the term was used to illustrate size and dimensions. “There is no intention to build an indoor basketball court whatsoever,” he said. “We’re talking about the size of a basketball court.” That’s when Lang brought up an idea discussed at the previous meeting: a community centre attached to the new township offices. She said recreation centres in White Lake and Braeside could have rinks, canteens,

Lang said she is fine with leaving the details to an architect. The 15 acres of vacant land surrounding the recreation centre, including treed land, is plenty of space, she said. MacKenzie wanted assurances from staff that noisy trucks and an unattractive housing for winter road maintenance will be safely behind a fence. He is uneasy with kids playing near big trucks. Armsden said Patterson intends to open a road allowance so the trucks won’t even be on the same pathway as recreation centre users. He pointed to the fence separating the water treatment and Nick Smith centres. MacKenzie was the only member to not vote for locating the shed on the recreation centre property.
and smaller meeting spaces. A more grand vision could then be in store for a centralized location. “We don’t want to have a divide between White Lake and Braeside,” Lang said. “Braeside would be smaller, but I would want a larger facility at a central location.” Armsden agreed the recreation centres should be modest, one level (to meet accessibility requirements) without any Nick Smith hall-sized rooms. Two sets of washrooms, change rooms for the rink, a kitchenette and an outdoor (likely unroofed) rink are also in the plans. “I don’t see the need for anything larger than what is there now,” Armsden said. Enough space to keep the Braeside Cup, the winter carnival, euchre and birthday parties. Peckett mentioned using a cookie cutter model for both villages, which would save money on design. But staff said that could be difficult in White Lake given the septic location and other difficulties. (Lang later said the cookie cutter might work for a storage building in White Lake and one at McNab Centre Park.) There was a suggestion that having a larger room in the township means the municipality could generate revenue from renting the space. Floor hockey, judo lessons: residents could rent the place for numerous activities. “It would be a nice space to have somewhere in the township,” said Angela Lochtie, township treasurer. Lang mused aloud about a skate park in the township, though Peckett said, “Maybe in the future, after growth.” MacKenzie said before any decisions are made regarding halls in the villages or at the new township offices residents should have their say. He said there is a smattering of

ideas – a splash pad at Wellington Park for instance – but no overall vision that unifies the community. “We have a highway with two communities and no strategy to build a unified sense of community,” MacKenzie said. “We’re missing central idea.” He pointed to the Clay Bank Park RV controversy getting little reaction in Braeside, and the quarry expansion issue getting the same indifference in White Lake. “We should be getting people here (at the township offices’ location) on issues from each side of the highway,” he said. “If we can step back for a moment and get away with replacing what’s here and think about buildings that will unify … If we bring people to the centre of the township, I believe you’ll see a lot more usage.” DRIVE TO COMPLEX
He believes residents are willing to drive a little farther to reach an impressive complex, either on the Perneel property on Russett Drive or next to the ball diamonds in Glasgow Station. Armsden said the township is a collection of hamlets, though a centralized hall with some amenities is possible. “I don’t think we have a township that’s divided. People are proud of the little hamlet we are from. There is a culture unique to all of them. Burnstown has its arts, White Lake and Braeside have their identities,” he said. “But we’re all McNabbers. “I consider that highway our main street,” Armsden added, to the chuckle of all. The location of the new township offices and possible community centre proved divisive. MacKenzie and Lang favour Glasgow Station where visiting ball teams can enjoy Price of Lot built with Marie Pierre the multiple facilModel: $269,900 ities. Safety must remain paramount: Reid Continued from front
“I agree with the report to a point,” Reid said. “But not by sacrificing public safety. You can have seatbelt checks, but approaching vehicles at night is another thing.” Reid was on AMO’s committee that dealt with skyrocketing OPP salaries. He has firsthand knowledge of how burdensome and unpredictable a policing budget can become. That AMO would suggest the provincial and municipal governments turn to private companies, as is done with bylaw enforcement, shouldn’t come as any surprise. Still, the Police Association of Ontario (PAO) argues crime rates are down because police officers are doing more to keep people safe. (Others have argued aging Baby Boomers are responsible for lower crime rates; elderly people are less likely to commit crimes.) The PAO says the number of police officers per 100,000 people has steadily declined over the past four years as the population continues to increase. “The pressure should be on investing in, and
not cutting police officers,” said PAO president Bruce Chapman. “We believe the public should know if their municipality is considering employing security guards making minimum wage to investigate a break and enter into residences, silent alarms at small businesses, domestic disputes and car thefts.” Chapman also believes AMO doesn’t fully understand the amount of training police officers go through in order to diffuse potentially volatile situations that increases public safety. “Every day police officers are put into situations that could be life-threatening,” Chapman said. “It is always harder to measure what police officers prevent from happening at every call for assistance.” And yet the obligation to find cost-savings in all areas, including policing, is proving a potent one. Reid gave no indication that town council is actively investigating the notion, but he is pointed in that direction. “I would agree that the fundamental recommendation (of the report) should be looked at,” he said.

OPP will not lay charges against Myles McLennan, who harvested hay on Township of McNab-Braeside property, destroying up to a dozen endangered birds’ nests. OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge said there is an exemption in the Endangered Species Act (ESA) for agricultural purposes. “So I assume that’s why the farmer thought it was OK,” Sawbridge said. “It’s now a matter between the two parties.” She said OPP could have laid trespassing charges, but that “there is a lot more to it,” including a contract between the Township of McNabBraeside and McLennan. ground-nesting bobolink. They were told McLennan’s contract with the township was cancelled. However, he insisted no one from the township contacted him to say so. Mayor Tom Peckett refuses to explain how it is that OPP were called to a taxpayer-owned hay harvesting. “(The) township is moving forward,” Peckett said. Council held a special closed meeting at 8 a.m. on Canada Day to discuss the matter. It remains unclear if McLennan will profit from the harvesting. It is unknown if the township intends to protect the birds next rearing season with signage and more. The ESA does, in fact, remove the exemption on Jan. 1, 2016. McLennan did not return phone calls before deadline.
A local resident is asking the Town of Arnprior for permission to hold Friday evening summer concerts in Robert Simpson Park. Doug Smith, known for musically entertaining voters during runs for Arnprior council, has asked for free use of the gazebo in the park and electric power. That would allow groups of free volunteer musicians to play every Friday in July and August from 6 to 10 p.m. Many of the volunteer musicians are also professionals who want to showcase their talent and help promote Arnprior, explained Smith. He notes the park tends to be quiet on Fridays, “so I would like to promote a free activity for families and visitors of Arnprior to enjoy Friday evenings in Robert Simpson Park and our downtown.” Smith would be the host of the concerts, which would be mostly acoustic. “Sing along, dance and meet your neighbours,” he said. While the performances will be free, they are being held in conjunction with a fundraising campaign
Doug Smith: fundraiser for Robert Simpson Park improvements. Smith has initiated to fund improvements to Robert Simpson Park. He lists the priorities as: • LED lighting for the outdoor gazebo to hold events later into the evening; • new outdoor water drinking fountain to replace broken fountain; • animal-proof garbage cans to replace open barrel garbage cans.
Prior Chest Nuts to take part in Dragon boat Festival The Prior Chest Nuts are getting ready for Arnprior’s Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, July 25. The Chest Nuts are a dragonboat team founded in June 2010, with a crew made up of breast cancer survivors. They meet Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at White Lake to paddle. Paddling is all about team work, health, community and most important it is about fun. “All our worries are left behind at the dock,” say members. On Saturday June 13, the Chest Nuts had a fun day paddling from the White Lake Marina to celebrate the anniversary of dragon boat racing for breast cancer survivors. The movement was started in Vancouver by Dr. Don McKenzie. After paddling the paddlers enjoyed a “delicious lunch” at beautiful Cedar Cove Resort.
They thank “our fantastic community and generous sponsors” for all their support over the last five years. The White Lake Marina has donated its facility and dock for their boat launching. The Prior Chest Nuts encourage the public to come out and see them at the Arnprior Dragonboat Festival at Robert Simpson Park. If you are a breast cancer survivor, want to get fit, have fun and enjoy the outdoors, dragon boating may be the activity for you, they say. “No experience necessary. Come join us. “We may not have it altogether, but together we have it all. Paddles up, take it away!” Contact the Chest Nuts at priorchestnuts@hotmail.com or visit www.priorchestnuts.com. Saturn Power is proposing a solar project fronting on Lochwinnoch Road in Horton near the border of McNab-Braeside. Saturn officials hosted a June 17 open house at the Renfrew Recreation Centre to provide information and answer questions about the proposed project. The capacity of the Solar Photovoltaic Grid connected system will be 12 to 24 megawatts located on about 288 acres of land. “With this proposal, Saturn Power understands community involvement is critical when successfully
developing a solar facility,” says Saturn. “Listening and responding to a community’s questions or concerns is an important task that Saturn is ready to engage.” The project is still in the proposal stage, noted Dave Patterson, Saturn Power’s senior manager of project development. Saturn will submit an application this month with a decision expected in fall. Residents with questions can contact Saturn or the Township of Horton. The township has not yet developed a position on the proposal, but the company does not need council’s approval to proceed.

Adrift in a distracted world Welcome to the lazy, crazy days of summer. The silly season began in earnest last week when a couple “forgot” they had put their baby in a small inflatable crib in the water at a beach in Turkey. The 10-month-old child then drifted a kilometre out to sea. The couple apparently didn’t even realize the tot was missing until other beach-goers noticed her bobbing on the horizon. The Coast Guard had to be called to rescue the child. Social media, of course, exploded and the couple received countless bonehead of the week nominations. Several commentators speculated the parents had been distracted because they had been texting or otherwise enamoured with their cell phones. It hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s not an unreasonable theory. Local OPP have been zeroing in on cellphone-using (abusing) drivers for some time now, including an enforcement blitz to start the summer. Police have also started to express another safety concern about cell phone use.
Distracted parenting is joining distract driving on the radar of police and other safety proponents. How many times have you seen young parents texting or talking on their cell/smart phones as they push baby carriages down busy sidewalks and through congested intersections? It’s a common sight to see youngsters splashing happily in the water as their parents on the beach concentrate on their hand-held devices, oblivious to any possible danger that may arise. Like distracted driving, it only takes a moment of inattention for disaster to strike. Alcohol is usually the main culprit in summer mishaps. It’s still a problem, but other distractions are catching up fast. Fortunately, the drifting baby story had a happy ending. But other distracted parents might not be so lucky. Don’t be deterred from embracing the great outdoors, but do it safely. Turn off your phones and give your children some undivided attention. It’s summer. Make the best of it.

A not so green ‘Report from Parliament’ by Cheryl Gallant
To the Editor: I was confused and concerned by the ‘Report from Parliament’ by Cheryl Gallant, MP, printed on page 39 of the June 25 issue of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. My concern stems from the impression that the environmental interests of the people in our community appear to be severely misunderstood and under-represented. While Cheryl Gallant recently confirmed funding for an upgrade to wastewater treatment to address water quality issues in Muskrat Lake, I am
baffled by her attack on people who support environmentally friendly lifestyle changes, specifically vegetarians, vegans, and proponents of public transit. While some environmentally conscious citizens may enjoy a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, most are primarily striving for a society that functions sustainably, for both the good of its citizens (not at their expense) and for the good of the Earth. She uses condescending terms like “extremist” (the same word that we use to re-

Ideas like: reducing paper waste is a good idea and sustainable harvesting of both wood products and meat products is the optimal standard. In the Report, Cheryl Gallant states that junk mail is “80 per cent of what is delivered by letter carriers” and suggests that reducing junk mail would make the jobs of Canada Post workers obsolete.

If this is truly the nature of the work of Canada Post, then perhaps it’s time for Canada Post to consider reinventing itself. Also suggested in the report is the idea that any change in the logging industry or livestock farming means an end
to all related jobs in our area. This is a very black and white attitude that I don’t subscribe to. I have every faith in the intelligence and resourcefulness of our workforce. A healthy economy includes businesses that respond
and adapt to society’s needs as opposed to asking us to accept the wastefulness of unwanted fliers crammed into our mailboxes or fearing that we may want to change our eating habits. See ENVIRONMENTAL, page 9

A motion won’t tackle Alzheimers issues like a bill would House proceedings and, as such, are considered Orders once adopted by the House. This information was found in the House of Commons Procedure and Practice, Second Edition, 2009. Mr. Claude Gravelle, Nickel Belt NDP, put a great deal of time and effort into Private Members’ Bill C-356 and it is truly remarkable to read the text of Motion 575 - it appears to be almost word for word which Mr. Gravelle had put in C-356. To quote Mr. Gravelle, on May 27, 2015, 2:08 p.m. (in an address to the Speaker of the House): “I realize I stand to represent not only the people of Nickel Belt but also the millions of Canadians who are demanding a credible, real, national dementia strategy. “Members will know that this motion appeared out of the blue a week before debate on my bill which proposed a real, credible, national dementia strategy. Environmental responsibility not an attack on economy Continued from page 8
Environmental responsibility is not an attack on our economy, it is a challenge that we can rise to meet. While climate change is “one of the most complex scientific issues that we have ever attempted to resolve.” there are scientific
and ethical components that are very easy to grasp. The Earth is a closed system that will become unhealthy if we use it for a dumping ground. It has limited resources which will eventually be depleted if used unsustainably. An unhealthy and depleted natural world
is not good news for us. This is common sense. I invite Cheryl Gallant and all readers to carefully reconsider how we are voicing our environmental interests at home and in the federal government forum. Solange Hupe Arnprior

To the Editor: Private Members’ Motion 575 (Ben Lobb, MP for Huron Bruce) is just that a motion - not a bill which is legislation. To understand how the government has “tackled Alzheimers issues” (letter, Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, July 2), I needed to clarify what a Private Members’ Motion is. Private Members’ Motions are used to introduce a wide range of issues and are framed either as orders or resolutions, depending on their intent. Motions attempting to make a declaration of opinion or purpose, without ordering or requiring a particular course of action, are considered resolutions. Hence, such motions which simply suggest that the government initiate a certain measure are generally phrased as follows: “That, in the opinion of the house the government should consider ...” The government is not bound to adopt a specific policy or course of action as a result of the adoption of such a resolution since the House is only stating an opinion or making a declaration of purpose. This is in contrast to those motions whose object is to give a direction to committees, Members or officers of the House or to regulate

Riding would do well to consider electing an Independent To the Editor: I regret to say that, with the federal election looming on the horizon, I appear to have no candidate that I feel comfortable enough voting for. That’s not meant as a personal slight to any of them currently on offer, but rather a lament
that the parties these people represent do essentially nothing for me, either in their past actions or inactions, or by what they promise to do in the future. And I feel they offer about the same to the riding where I live. The Conservatives are listing, taking on water badly, much of the crew going over the rail-

Have your say. Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for pre-approval of the cost consequences associated with a 15-year gas transportation contract commencing on November 1, 2017. The total cost for NEXUS capacity over the term of the contract is approximately $421.6 million (US). If its application is approved, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. says that the benefits will include: • enhancing its gas supply plan through improved reliability, diversity, and flexibility • supporting the development of new natural gas pipeline infrastructure • allowing direct access to new sources of natural gas supply in the Appalachian Basin Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. says that its forecast cost of gas supply via the NEXUS pipeline is competitive with alternative pipeline projects or existing pipeline infrastructure that accesses the Dawn Hub. THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD IS HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) will hold a public hearing to consider the application filed by Enbridge Gas. We will question Enbridge Gas on the case. We will also hear arguments from individuals and from groups that represent the customers of Enbridge Gas. ing, and the prospect of even more self-inflicted damage in the near future. The Liberals, sporting a fresh coat of paint and a rock star skipper, seem directionless, meandering about in search of fair winds, periodically tooting their horn, but always giving the impression that they’re more likely to run aground. They’re pretty, but they break easily. And then the New Democrats, who for the longest time could promise passage of all sorts to all sorts, but now as they get closer to the big boys, must now be held accountable for the cargo they carry. In short, in my opinion, the Conservatives are past their best before date, the Liberals haven’t earned their way back yet, and the NDP wants to pull us out of NATO, abolish the senate, change the sovereignty threshold in Quebec, and bring back the gun registry. I saw in my morning paper that Brent Rathgeber, a former Conservative MP from out west, quit the Tory caucus over two years ago and has been sitting as an independent ever since. He intends to run again as an independent, and his prospects appear good for re-election. Rathgeber indicates that his decision to sit on his own to represent his constituents hasn’t had any detrimental effect whatsoever on his riding. Government money and services continue to flow in, the cheques get cashed, and the sun continues to come up in the east and settle in the west. And his constituents feel ably represented. Rathgeber, of course, is not the only independent member of parliament, as there are seven others as well. Which makes me wonder if our very own Hec Clouthier had it right all along, only to be four years too soon. Reading about Rathgeber this morning was like reading about Clouthier. As many of you can recall, Clouthier ran full-out in the last federal election, extolling the power of the independent, and how it could be brought to bear for the benefit of the riding. He was indefatigable and resolute with that message, seemingly everywhere for more than
a year prior to the election being called. It makes me wonder what that level of energy and passion could do for us in Ottawa. Factor in the fact that Clouthier knows first-hand the movers, shakers and players, including all three major party leaders, and you’ve got a potential scenario that would be hard to replicate for any member of parliament, no matter their party affiliation. Four years too soon. I wouldn’t care to speculate on Mr. Clouthier’s intentions this time around. I’ve noted, from the media, that he appears to be active and energetic, if running the 2015 Boston Marathon can be used as a measure of activity and energy. But would he really run again? Hard to say. If he did, it would represent the fifth time he’s put his name out there, not counting a run for the Liberal nomination back in 2004. And it can’t be easy to go to all of that effort, so may times, only to come up short in ways other than height. But holy cow, the guy’s got some pluck to him, no arguing that. Maybe it’s this kind of pluck that we need more than anything else. I’ve been sharing my own thoughts on the power of an independent for the past decade, offering it to my fellow citizens as a way for us to break out of the party self-interest that has blanketed us seemingly forever. Political parties care not a whit for us, other than they’d like to own our seat at the table. I would prefer we, the citizens of this riding, be the ones who own it. As to Mr. Clouthier, I would completely understand if he chose to stay out of it. Election campaigns are expensive and exhausting, and as he knows better than any of us, they can hurt. But even Abe Lincoln lost eight elections before winning the big one, so I guess pluck, when mixed with some good timing, can achieve great things. Four years too soon? Or absolutely right on time? Steve Jones Renfrew
Alzheimers solution would involve federal, other levels Continued from page 9
“However, a national strategy would involve all levels of government and introduce benchmarks, standards of care as well as time frames. It would also give other levels of government and stakeholders a forum to point out the need for resources. Instead of a series of ad hoc initiatives, a national strategy is a long-term solution for a problem that will be with us for a long time.” To help myself and others to understand what Private Members’ Motion 575 will do for Canadians, I felt compelled to research this and share some of the findings. I am not convinced ‘Government has tackled Alzheimer issues’. The facts speak for themselves. In reference to the paid advertisement from
Brenda MacLean: which referenced me as Valerie S. Baker (should have read Valarie J. Baker) and according to her tried to convince you not to vote conservative, think of this.” I would simply respond, Freedom of Speech in Canada is protected as a “fundamental freedom” by Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A paid advertisement is more of a political statement than our letters. I feel that Canadians suffering with dementia and their caregivers would have benefited from Private Members Bill C-356. Ask anyone in this situation, “How are you managing?” Does Private Members’ Motion 575 seem like it will improve your present situation? Valarie J. Baker White Lake

Today, I’d like to tell you a little story about a teenage girl I’ve been treating with such remarkable results, that every person suffering the after effects of a concussion should hear about. The girl was very involved in the Highschool Rugby Team for a few years and of course as one expects with this choice of “hands-on” sports, she got injured frequently. She suffered three major concussions, even with the loss of consciousness. She finally had to let go of the sport as she was unable to attend school for quite a while due to her severe headaches. Eventually she also suffered with Mononucleosis, which put even more of a strain on her already weakened system. She and her parents tried everything, from visits to CHEO, many appointments with her family physician and of course also the opportunity to see a Sports Medicine Doctor. Nothing however got rid of her headaches. Prior to her injuries she was a bright student, but now she couldn’t study and started falling behind…way behind…and her anxiety started to skyrocket as that wasn’t her and she usually was driven to do well…but she simply couldn’t. In a desperate attempt to help her daughter, her mom made an appointment and her Heilkunst treatment started. Even within the first month, her headaches had subsided to the point that she could attend school again. By the third month, she was back to normal and has continued to excelled in her academic development ever since. The treatment of her “Mono” was another welcoming side effect as Heilkunst treats the whole person.

“We encourage other businesses and individuals to also help CPAN,” said Paczek in throwing out a challenge. Smith said CPAN is asking businesses and individuals county-wide to consider sponsoring one or more children. “It only costs $75 per child, per year. Give a little - change a lot.” Research shows that children students who have the tools they need are more likely to graduate high school and have the opportunity to transition to post-secondary education. This makes these graduates more employable, and less likely that their children will also grow up in poverty. “I can’t tell you how happy I am that businesses like The Commonwell give back to communities, and do so in such an inspirational way.” said Smith “It’s quite fitting because I believe that CPAN has been formed and continues to operate by creating, or being part of, that very ripple effect.”

The Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) has received a major donation from McDougall Insurance of Arnprior. The contribution of $20,000 is from the Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group’s C.A.R.E. (Create a Ripple Effect) Program. Saying she is “extremely pleased,” CPAN co-ordinator Lyn Smith pointed out that donations of this type are critical to the organization’s operation as it relies completely on grants, fundraisers and donations. CPAN functions with minimal overhead and the $20,000 donation is expected to have an immediate impact in assisting local children and youth in need, she added. The Commonwell’s C.A.R.E. (Create a Ripple Effect) Program supports local registered charities with a focus on children, health care and safety. “Our name may be new, but we have been a local insurer in Eastern Ontario for over a century. Being fit and active is one of the best things in the world. Not only does it make us stronger to boost our immune system and fight off illnesses but it also sets free healthy endorphins…some “happy” feelings are welcoming side effects. For some, an active lifestyle is part of their day to day activity or job, for others it is a conscious effort to engage in daily physical activity or enjoying a membership in a fitness club and quite a few are a member of a team practicing a couple times a week. As with everything, there is always the potential of a flip side to all the benefits and enjoyments. In sports many athletes -young or old- endure some kind of injuries from minor pulled muscles, bruises and cuts to rather severe injuries like repetitive concussions, broken bones and severe falls or “hits” that can lead to major challenges.

Wild Orchids abound in the Ottawa Valley I think it safe to say that most people enjoy wildflowers. That is for good reason for they delight our senses with bouquets of colour and scent. No habitat is void of their beauty; in spring they carpet rich hardwood forests and in summer they cloak roadside meadows. Currently ponds and lake
bays are painted with yellow and white water-lilies. Few wildflowers draw more accolades than do orchids. It may come as a surprise that our area is particularly rich with these exotic plants. While mist-drenched rain forests aren’t part of its makeup, the Ottawa Valley supports

around 40 species of this fascinating group. A few grow in open meadows, but most species frequent very different habitats. Each year I lead an orchid outing for the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club. As usual, our first destination was the White Lake Fen. Fens are peatlands that are floristically richer than bogs. In addition to typical peatland specialties such as Labrador Tea and carnivorous Pitcher-plants, the White Lake Fen is rich in orchids. To reach the fen, we first wandered through a mucky cedar swamp. Here we encountered stunning Showy Lady’sslippers, which are the club’s insignia. These stunning orchids were considerably easier to spot than was the White Adder’s-mouth, which stood about as tall as your index finger is long, but only a fraction of its diameter. Fortunately, in the fen most orchids were far more conspicuous than that. Hundreds of Rose Pogonias and lesser numbers of Grass Pinks were visible everywhere.

All orchids have an enlarged petal - the labellum - on which insects land. In Pogonia blooms, this petal is the lowermost, while on Grass Pinks it is the uppermost. In both species this petal is adorned with what appear to be pollen-bearing stamens. These are actually modified hairs that act as a lure to attract Bumble Bees, the orchids’ main pollinators. When bees wander in and out of their flowers, Pogonias get pollinated. Grass Pinks take a much more active role in the process. Their labellum is hinged at its base. When a bee lands

on the fake pollen, its weight causes the petal to collapse. The undoubtedly surprised insect lands on its back in a winged trough, pinned there by the weight of the petal. As it crawls to freedom, the bee has pollen it is carrying pulled from its body. Then sticky glue is added, and this picks up new pollen as the bee departs its temporary coffin. If a bee visits Pogonias and Grass Pinks, pollen from one does not end up in the other’s flowers. That is because the two species deposit their pollen on different parts of a bee, and different sizes of bees are involved in the pollination of each plant. In total we tallied 14 species of orchids on our outing. We also met the smallest dragonfly in North America and one of the rarest caterpillars in Canada. The warm temperatures brought out the crowd for the annual McNab Public School fun fair. The school also had a Plan B for rain and could have held everything inside, but it wasn’t needed. Kathy MacKenzie said the event was put on by the Parent Council with plenty of help from school secretary Cathy Stevenson.

The Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club ended their 2014/15 season with a strong finish at the Deep River Blackfly meet on May 23 and 24. The annual ‘Blackfly’ is a great meet hosted by the Deep River Candu Swim Club and is open to all Bluefish swimmers, competitive and pre-competitive. It is an excellent introduction to competition, being part of a team and most importantly is a lot of fun. During the two-day meet, many competitive and pre-competitive swimmers achieved personal best times. In the teams points race, the Arnprior Bluefish finished in first place. “Great job team.” Special mention goes out to Alex Wroe, 12, who qualified for the 2015 Swim Ontario Summer Festival in London, Ontario.

Jim Barry’s car a winner at Luskville dragway in bracket racing Scott Campbell
scottcampbell@metroland.com
Jim Barry has had owned his automotive shop on McLachlin Street in Arnprior for a while. What many people may not know is his involvement in drag racing. “I’m trying to make a living just to pay for the stupid car,” laughed Barry. He is not an avid racer by any means, as it comes with a high cost. He does take his racing car out every now and then, since he bought it from Thunder Bay about three years ago. One of those times was at the Luskville dragway a few weeks ago. It won a major race there June 14. Barry was not the person to be behind the wheel though. It was Julie Dubé in the driver’s seat. “She’s an experienced race car driver and capable to drive a fast car,” said Barry. “It’s amazing. The car goes the first 60 feet in about 1.1 seconds.” The Luskville dragway website reports it was Dubé and Terry Miron competing in the semi-finals of the Super Pro. The finals would pit Randy Urslak against Dubé and she would take the win on her birthday.
It may sound like it was an easy win. “People think the cars line up and race each other,” said Barry. “The first one crosses the finish line wins. It’s not how it works.” The battles that took place are part of what is known as bracket racing. Dubé explained the concept in a Youtube video made by racer/photographer Dave Kendal. The racers have to conduct trial runs in both lanes, Dube explained. The decision then has to be made to decide what number the car will be consistently running - like 5.10 seconds which the driver has to set on the car. The dial that the time is featured on is visible to race officials and is set at the starting line. The closer the car runs to the time, the better the result. “It’s a tough way to race,” said Barry. Theoretically, the competitor can get a head start due to the time on their dial and it would still be considered an even playing field for the race. A miscalculation in breaking out at the starting line simply too fast or misjudgment in the momentum needed to pass a competitor, which can require only hundreds of a second, can make a difference in the race. If the racer ends up being too slow from the 5.10 seconds, it pretty much results in a loss. “You pretty much have to dead on the time within hundreds of the second to win.”

Diemonds with singer Priya Panda to play a gig in Arnprior this Sunday Toronto up-and-coming hard rock band, the Diemonds, will play Arnprior this Sunday, July 12. The band’s publicist says the Diemonds combine live theatrics and the antics of bands like Guns n’ Roses, Motley Crue, and Motorhead with lyrics that speak to the outcasts, wild childs, and misfits. The band’s frontwoman, Priya Panda,is a sultry singer “who walks the indeterminable fine line between class and crass and breaks
every cultural, social, gender and sexual boundary known to hard rock,” says the release promoting the show. Joining her on stage are band mates C.C. Diemond and Daniel Dekay on guitar, Tommy Cee on bass and Aiden Tranquada on drums. The band will play at the John St. Pub in downtown Arnprior with Ottawa’s Hellbros the opening act. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $10.
The Diemonds record ‘The Bad Pack’ has open the way for several North American tours. The band was named the Best Underground Artist of 2013 by High Times Magazine and the UK’s Classic Rock Magazine selected their music video ‘GTFO’ as the year’s fourth best. Now the band is gearing up to support its third album ‘Never Wanna Die’ set for release Aug. 14.

Hy-Liners step it up again at Arnprior’s Canada Day festivities Performing at Arnprior’s Canada Day celebrations has become a popular, well established tradition for The Hy-Liners thanks to an annual invitation from the Town of Arnprior. The line-dance group, based in Arnprior and environs, is led by instructor Hyacinth Chatterton and its members have been dancing and
entertaining in the Valley for several years. They represent many areas including Almonte, Arnprior, Braeside, Carleton Place, Carp, Constance Bay, Horton, Kanata, Kinburn, Lombardy, Pakenham, Perth, Renfrew, Stittsville, Waba and White Lake. On Canada Day. some of the dancers were available to entertain in the
gazebo at Robert Simpson Park. They were delighted to have a very receptive crowd of dignitaries, spectators and other onlookers responding to their performance. In the scenic setting of the park, the dancers presented numbers from the following genres of music - modern, country, jazz, Latin, waltz -
which represented a few of the many types of music they interpret on a regular basis. The first dance used a very popular song from the modern era, ‘AllAbout-That-Bass’. The dancers presented two choreographies simultaneously by dancing in groups on each side of the stage. This form

of split dancing is often used in linedancing to showcase more than one choreography for the same tune, at the same time. Next followed one of the signature country line-dances, ‘The ElectricSlide’, which was popularized decades ago, and comes from the very roots of this dance-format. In doing this number the group gave it a special spin by featuring contra-formations. The more experienced dancers then performed a jazz number called ‘Higher-And Higher’, choreographed to the upbeat tune ‘Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher’. For the next genre, the dancers showcased the Latin influence in linedancing with a rendition of ‘MammaMaria’. The wrap-up number started with a symmetrical split of two waltzes, ‘Dream On’ and ‘Like A Fool’. Part way through this presentation, a goodold-stand-by line-dance, ‘Rita’sWaltz’, was added as a combination dance. This was a fitting finale to the HyLiners’ contribution, as all the dancers moved seamlessly into this third waltz as a single group, while using their signature ‘palming’ sequences at every new wall that they faced. The Hy-Liners have always invited instructors and dancers from other groups to join them on this annual, celebratory occasion in Arnprior. This added participation became a reality two years ago, but was not feasible for many of the invitees this year. The Hy-Liners look forward to this combined dancing occurring once more when their open invitation for guest-participants is sent out again next year. (Psst ... there’s even a rumour that a ‘flash-mob’ routine might be in-the-making on the next occasion.) The regular Line-dance programs for Hy-Liner sessions will start again in October, with the fall programs running from October to December. These will be offered through Arnprior’s Nick Smith Centre (613-6237301), Almonte Community Centre (613-256-1077), Darling-White Lake Community Centre (613-622-0494) and Almonte’s Mills Community Support Corporation (613-256-1031). As in the past, programs will be available for every level of dancing: beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced. Chatterton reminds prospective participants that this activity is very suitable for, and very well received by, all ages and both genders. Registration will begin in late summer, through the centres or groups listed above. Pre-registration is highly recommended and this may be accomplished right away by contacting Chatterton directly at 613-623-0976 or at mais-brown@sympatico.ca.

Thank you, Residents of the town of Renfrew, for your kindness and loving care for Sister Joan Pecore, during her final illness. You were wonderful! You may not know, that Sister Joan was the last sister involved in ministry in Renfrew. Our Sisters came to Renfrew in 1887 as teachers, but our records show that there was a music teacher with the first group, right from the beginning. Sister Joan was following in the tradition of those who had gone before her and who had taught her. We are especially grateful to the doctors and staff at Renfrew Victoria Hospital, the excellent care given at Hospice Renfrew; the prayerful support given by Father Kerry Brennan and Father Ryan Holly; the kindness of the staff at the Goulet Funeral Home, and last but not least, those faithful friends, devoted Associates of Holy Cross and generous staff from both Our Lady of Fatima and St. Thomas the Apostle Schools, who took time from busy schedules to visit, comfort and pray with her. The Sisters of Holy Cross and Sister Joan’s family, are forever grateful!

Goldie Hogan of the Arnprior Villa; Beatrice Sheridan from the adult day program; Eric Hanna president and CEO of Arnprior Regional Health; Margaret Bahm from the Grove; and Marie Tammala of Island View Suites take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony .
Celebrating seniors in the community scottcampbell@metroland.com
It was believed to be the first time ever in Arnprior that the Grove nursing home, the Villa and Island View Suites joined forces to co-ordinate and cooperate on bringing seniors together for their month. June was ‘Seniors Month’ in Arnprior and across the province. “This year’s theme is ‘Vibrant Seniors, Vibrant Communities’,” said Tracey McCormick of the Grove. “The staff has been busy with a jam-packed month including a fun new way to exercise, strawberry socials, books clubs, musical entertainment and lunches down at the park.” “I think this is a great idea,” said Karen Colbert of Island View Suites “It’s a chance to get together and celebrate seniors. There are a lot of them.” Debbie Visinski from Island View and the Villa was also present. There were also clients from the Adult Day Program. The month of activities kicked off with a vibrant display of quilts at the Grove.
“Life is like a quilt,” said McCormick. “Years bound together, embellished with family and friends, back with tradition, stitched with love, with cornerstones places carefully to create a one of a kind journey through time.” The Grove is a 61-bed facility and also keeps people active as an example of the painted quilt project, showed by McCormick. McCormick also made note of the Adult Day Program, which is operated through the Arnprior Regional Health. It has 12 slots for four days a week and every client has the option to join for two days to take part in a variety of activities. Most importantly, it gives the caregiver or loved one a break. One man, looking after his wife, had said that he couldn’t live without the program – calling them his glass of water. Holding a glass of water doesn’t mean much for a few moments, but the longer you hold onto it the more you notice it. The program allows him to pass the glass for a while. Other activities included for the month included Katrina Kahn teaching seniors Zumba. For more Seniors Month photographs, see next week’s Chronicle-Guide.

Berry good time at Island View As part of the Senior Month activities, Island View Suites hosted its annual Strawberry Social on June 23. Chef Wendy Crego prepared mini-strawberry shortcakes, spice cake, petit fours, and everything strawberry for 80 residents and guests. The mini shortcake cups were very popular. The afternoon was perfect with a breeze off the river onto the riverside patio. The Diamonds played favorites songs and requests for several hours and led to some dancing, right, by Bev and Ken Davies of Arnprior. Above left, Pat and Bert Reitsma enjoy the social. Above, cleaning up a large batch of donated strawberries from McGregor’s Produce, from left, are Marjorie Hyndman, Doris Theraiult, Marion Ray, Dorothy Caldwell and Ethel Bonell.

The ‘Yellow Envelope Mail-Out to Keep the Wheels Turning’ campaign raises money to ensure the Care Coach remains on the road and continues to be able to provide independence to residents of Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, and areas of West Carleton including Fitzroy Harbour, Galetta, Kinburn, Woodlawn and Dunrobin, that count on the service provided. Our Para Transit Care Coach is the only specialized transportation service for persons of all ages operating in Arnprior and McNab-Braeside, and it relies totally on local fundraising. Thank you to Emmanuel Anglican Church, which has pledged a total of $1,000; Kevin Turcotte and the Old-Timers Hockey Club $200; and Edna Mather of Mather Insurance for her generous donation of $500. Last but not least, ‘thank you’ to the 198 individuals who have returned their yellow envelope and their donation for the 2015 campaign. Any and all amounts are welcomed as we look to reach the goal of $30,000. We anticipated that last day of school for weeks before it finally rolled around. And all the time I went to the Northcote School, our final day before the summer holidays varied little. We would be on our very best behaviour just on the off chance that Miss Crosby would look on us kindly when she was filling out our report cards – although I know now that a sudden burst of concentration and an effort to increase our production would do little to change the outcome at that point in the school year. The die was cast! It was long the custom to go dressed in our next-to-Sunday best on the last day of school. That meant wearing not quite go-to-church clothes but not play clothes either. Even Cecil would leave his bib overalls at home in exchange for cotton twill pants and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. That was just about as dressy as Cecil ever got. The night before the last day of school, Mother had us write notes to Miss Crosby thanking her for her year of teaching, and her patience. The five letters were obviously similar since Mother sat at the kitchen table dictating them to us. And just about everyone in the Northcote School would bring an end-of-the-year present for the teacher as well. Those of us who had little or no money would take home-baking or preserves and one year I remember very well, one of the senior boys brought a dressed chicken, trussed up and ready for the oven. By the time Miss Crosby was ready to go home, the back lunch table would be piled high with our gifts of thanks … the most simple of fare. Alas, the gifts didn’t sway Miss Crosby one iota when it came to the report cards. No amount of baking or preserves could produce a better grade than what she thought you had earned during the year. And just because it was the last day of school, we weren’t excused from the regular routine Miss Crosby followed religiously every other day of the year. We still had a bible reading in the morning, followed by a long and purposeful prayer, and with our right hand over our hearts a final singing salute to the King. For the rest of the morning we had what the teacher called review work. This was when we had to remember what had been taught months before and come up with instant recall. If we failed to do so, Miss Crosby would send us home on the last day of school with ‘summer work’ as she called it. And she would be right there to check it in September to make sure we had it done. The noon lunch was always a special time on the last day of school. All the bags were shared, so there was a special effort to make sure the lunches were not just plain honey sandwiches, or pieces of headcheese between two slices of bread. There always seemed to be lots of chocolate cake and butter tarts, and I can remember how my little friend Joyce would bring homemade fudge for the whole school. Once we had put in a full morning, Miss Crosby would announce that it was lunch time and we would all move to the outside … everyone carrying a bag from the pile at the back of
Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK
the school room. Miss Crosby always brought a big plaid blanket … one of those that people used in open touring cars. This she would spread out on the grass under the elm tree and the 18 of us who made up the entire enrolment of the Northcote school would sit cross-legged on the grass around the blanket. The lunches would be heaped in the centre, and this was the one time when Miss Crosby didn’t stand on ceremony. We could reach and grab as much as we wanted, all the time staying within the limits of good manners of course. When every last scrap had been eaten, there was rarely a crust left for the birds, Miss Crosby would open a story book she had brought from her home and read us the final chapters. It would be a book that she had been reading to us, one chapter at a time for weeks, and the last day of school was the culmination of that once-a-week read. We half listened. We wanted to hear the end of the book certainly … but we dreaded the last paragraph. Because when Miss Crosby closed the book for the last time, we dreaded what was coming next. It was report card time … and there was no getting away from it. She kept the report cards in a big folder made out of advertisements from Scott’s Hardware store, the kind used to wrap around textbooks for protection. They were handed out by class; primer book first and then right up to the entrance class. We would steal a peek and let out a roar of sheer joy. We had passed. We had made it into the next grade. Although it would be frowned on today, it was considered a pleasure to be handed a cleanup job before the little one-room schoolhouse was locked up for the summer. The senior girls washed down the slate blackboards, we younger ones took the brushes outside and pounded them together to get every last smidgen of chalk off them and the windowsills were scrubbed. All but a few of the older boys were shooed out of the schoolhouse, and their job was to scour the wood floor with soapy water, a good dash of Lysol, and a mop. Inside we knew Miss Crosby would be stuffing the several holes in the baseboards where on a good day we would see four or five mice scurrying from one opening to another. A textbook would be propped against each hole to further antagonize the field mice that tried to gain entry to our precious building. The year was coming to a close. You could be sure you earned every last comment on the report card, be it good or bad. The long months of summer lay before us, and with mixed feelings of relief and joy, they too would be gone, and Miss Crosby and the spotlessly cleaned one-room schoolhouse would once again be ready and waiting for us.

This weeks puzzle answers in next weeks issue
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
