An outdoor rink built by the Ottawa Senators is all but a certainty; the only question is where in Arnprior will it be located. At the July 10 council meeting, Optimist Club member Brad McKay — the driving force behind the rink — said many of the NHL club’s requirements could be met. The community in Smiths Falls raised $300,000 for their rink. The local Optimists already have $100,000; plus, with construction company M. Sullivan & Son on board, the estimated cost will be about $200,000. “We are halfway to our goal,” McKay said. “This is a community project built by the community.” He added that “rink” is misleading. The Optimists and the Sens expect the facility, with permanent boards and overhead lights, to be used year-round for activities such as tennis, basketball, broomball, lacrosse, ball hockey, pickleball and bike polo. Although the child-focused charity group and the local construction company will contribute much of the upfront costs, the municipality is expected to contribute on several levels. Topping the list is providing a location. Town planner Robin Paquette’s report at the meeting suggests four possibilities: Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail on Meehan Street, opposite the ambulance building and fire hall. The county owns the land, but would likely make it available. There is room for a parking lot and storage building. It is also centrally located and near the downtown core. But space is cramped. Sens rink could be near Nick Smith Centre Continued from page 1
Legion Park on Edey Street, near St. John XXIII. It has enough space and is fairly central, but no parking lot. And it is surrounded by homes that aren’t used to noise and lighting at night. It would also require a longer water service line than other sites. McLean Diamonds would situate it close to other recreation facilities, and residents are used to night use with ball games. Parking, lights, a water main and space for a storage unit are on site. It’s not centrally located and no storage unit is on site. Nick Smith Centre has a vacant lot at its entrance, across from the public works and water filtration plant. It is close to other recreation amenities such as a play structure and skate board rink. Parking and maintenance staff are nearby, storage is at Nick Smith. It’s a small site but appears big enough for a 70-by-26-metre (200-by-85-foot) facility. Regardless the location, and commitments such as annual maintenance costs of between $1,500 and $2,500, programming, and annual written reports to the Senators, staff is in favour. “Certainly, from a staff perspective we see some benefits,” Paquette said. “At this point we recommend council accept.” The report does not show a final tally the Sens will put into the project. Lighting will cost the town $30,000; a covered shelter, $20,000; a
water chamber for flooding, $20,000. Council supports the project, which is one of 12 the Ottawa Senators Foundation wants to build in the region. At least most are leaning toward the civic centre location. Coun. Lynn Grinstead called it exciting, but wanted to know if it would take away from programming at Nick Smith Centre. Recreation director Glenn Arthur said it wouldn’t; minor hockey teams, ringette and the like won’t hold formal games there. “I don’t see negative impacts on this whatsoever,” he said. Coun. Ted Strike learned that it would be a roof-and-post unheated facility with benches. No new municipal equipment would be needed. Mayor David Reid initially thought Meehan Street made sense, but came around to Nick Smith because of the nearby washrooms and proximity to staff and equipment. He hoped Pad A and B ice resurfacing machines would be used on the outdoor rink. All eyes turned to Arthur. “Once the parking lot’s paved,” he said, to great laughter. Arthur has long asked council to pave the large parking lot at the 40-year-old facility. It is always deferred. He won’t have small rocks spraying up into the machines. Coun. Frank Dugal called for public consultation before proceeding. That process has yet to be established. It is unknown when the facility will be in use.

New wave of funding available to flood victims TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Canadian Red Cross has announced a second wave of funding for those affected by the historic spring floods. In May the Canadian Red Cross announced $4 million of direct financial assistance to help those who have been hit hardest by the recent flooding in Ontario and Quebec. For the first wave of funding, eligible registered households received $600 to help purchase what they urgently needed. “There was a good response to the first wave (in Renfrew County) but we are certainly looking for people who haven’t registered to let them know they can still register,” said James Sedgewick, disaster management liaison officer for Renfrew County. Sedgewick explains the first wave of funding was for basic and immediate needs and this wave is different. “For the second wave
of funding they will have a needs assessment based on an interview with a Red Cross case worker, based on individual needs, so the amount will vary with certain eligibility criteria,” said Sedgewick. The press release notes: there are a number of criteria to determine how much financial assistance each registered household is eligible to receive. Amounts per household will vary, depending on each family’s unique situation. In order for households to be eligible for this second phase of financial assistance, they must already be registered with the Red Cross, and must already be validated as a flood-impacted household. He notes this second wave of funding, like the first, is for primary residences. “Phase 2 is for those who are particularly vulnerable and severely affected by the floods and are unable to return home with major damage to the home,” said Sedgewick. “Its important people take advantage of assistance through insurance, Disaster Recovery Assistance, the Red Cross or other agencies. We want them to register with their needs so we can possibly assist them.”
An appeal went out in early May and close to $7 million was raised. “I think Canadians have been very generous with donations and municipalities around Renfrew County have been great partners,” said Sedgewick. “Everyone is trying to help those who are impacted and should take advantage of the assistance.” Eligibility will be based on municipally assessed property values of flood-impacted residences, according to the release from the Red Cross. In Ontario, properties valued at $500,000 and lower will be eligible. Properties valued higher than the maximum value do not qualify for further assistance. If impacted households have not registered with the Red Cross, they can still register online at redcross.ca/ gethelp or by calling 1-800-863-6582.

On June 28, County of Renfrew Council passed a motion recommending that the 219 km Algonquin Trail portion of the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail (OVRT) be designated as multi-use, which includes all methods of self-propelled transportation, as well as horseback riding, snowmobiles, ATVs and side-by-sides as defined by the Off-Road Vehicles Act, O. Reg 316/03, s. 1, as amended. The motion includes a provision that the county would consider bypass/twinning alternatives presented by local municipalities that are prepared to support and fund them. This motion follows the original intent of the use of the corridor and provides direction on the future use of the Algonquin Trail within the Management Plan. Partnering with Lanark County and Papineau-Cameron Township, the 296 km OVRT corridor stretches from Smiths Falls to Mattawa. Renfrew County hosted six public open houses in the fall of 2016, many comments were received about motorized versus non-motorized use of the trail. With the passing of this motion the County of Renfrew joins its partner municipalities who have also declared their sections to be multi-use. Branch trails or bypasses could be designed to encourage specific use (e.g. motorized) and would consequently enable some sections of the main trail to become non-motorized while still offering a continuous motorized trail. The trail corridor passes through 10 municipalities within the county and the City of Pembroke, and will form the “spine” of a future county-wide trail network as contemplated in the County of Renfrew Trails Strategy. Chair of the Algonquin Trail Advisory Committee and the Development & Property Committee, Coun. Bob Sweet states: “The county council resolution enables the county to move forward with the creation of a management plan and also allows the local municipalities to explore options for use in their jurisdiction.”
Did you know that Arnprior Regional Health has a plan in place to enlarge and rebuild the Grove nursing home? The plan includes securing an additional 36 nursing home bed licenses coupled with the current 60 licenses all of which would be accommodated in a new facility. Additionally, the current facility would be re-purposed in the near future to include seniors housing and community services for the elderly.

Arnprior class of 2017 takes to the stage DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Class valedictorian Julia Enright and several other graduates were multiple award recipients at this year’s Arnprior District High School (ADHS) commencement. Held at the school on June 29, Enright was given the Dan Hickey Memorial, the Elizabeth W. Macklem Memorial Scholarship, a silver Renfrew County District School Board Certificate, Big A, Renfrew County District School Board Medallion, and was named an Ontario Scholar. However, her speech wasn’t about winning accolades. Rather she focused on the budding maturity of her and her friends. “When we entered the front doors four years ago as timid grade 9s and walked into the cavernous hallways of ADHS, we were unsure of what to expect in these new surroundings. The hallways seemed foreign, and for a while extremely confusing,” Enright said. “The halls of ADHS now contained within them students who were stronger, more resilient, and who also knew that, when in doubt, a little dancing to high school musical never hurts. This past year with so many tasks to accomplish and dreams to fulfill I found myself rushing around the hallways more and more without sometimes taking a second to appreciate just how far we’ve gone in them “It struck me just how fortunate we have been to share the hallways together and through all the ups and the downs have learned more from one and other than I can put into words, so to all of you I want to say thank you as well.” ADHS added four new awards this year, handing out $50,000 in scholarships to 70 students. Stephanie Skarica received the Governor General’s academic medal. The Lietenant Madison Neill was given the Governor’s community volunteer award. OPINION

MP should sit as independent It must be a sign of the Conservative Party of Canada’s tolerance for dissent, of its big tent embrace of various opinions that accounts for keeping Cheryl Gallant on board. Her countless gaffes are legendary. Her vicious us-versus-them worldview is considered over the top by even the most loyal party members. The party is truly broad-minded, even insanely reasonable to keep one of the least respected MPs on Parliament Hill in its fold. But that doesn’t explain why she stays with the party. Why would she stay with a group of MPs who voted with the Liberal government on backing the Paris Accord on climate change? Every single one of the Tories voted recently to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to Paris. As did all the Liberals. And all the NDP. And everyone else on the hill - except the MP for RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke, Cheryl Gallant. It’s as if the us-versus-them has morphed into a her-versus-the world. Paris lays out commitments for nations to limit their greenhouse-gas emissions and contain the impact of global warming. For many years the career politician has cast doubt on the science showing the effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Ditto that humans are influencing the phenomenon. So the idea of doing something about it - reducing fossil fuel consumption - she finds appalling. Stop giving massive tax breaks to Big Oil? Fund green alternatives that create green jobs? Nope.
Gallant made it plain in a recent “Report from Parliament” that her party is, when it comes to the Paris Accord, no better than the Liberals. Forget that her party, when in government in 2015, helped negotiate the Paris Accord. Forget that she said nary a word against it then. Gallant’s June 2017 report makes it quite clear that every member in the House of Commons – except her – now wants to take more money through “the Paris carbon tax Accord” to hurt working people in her riding. The motion she voted against and, again, every member of her party voted for, “was nothing more than cheap partisan politics at the expense of jobs, the economy, and a clean environment.” So Conservatives are for unemployment and a dirty world? Well - not MP Gallant! “I refuse to allow the taxpayers of RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke to be used as props in that staged tragedy,” she wrote. “The Paris carbon tax accord is behind liberal (sic) carbon tax policy to shift money out of your pocket into the pocket of big business and big government.” It is baffling how Gallant - the sole MP to vote against taking money from her taxpaying constituents to squander on corporate welfare and too many public servants (including military?) - can stay with the Conservative party. She must be even more tolerant than they. At some point one would think her tolerance must give way to her principles. She is no hyperpartisan blowhard. No. She has genuine integrity. And one day she will prove it.
and riots in order to shut down or si- change. There will be a hefty price for all to pay lence that view. I have been following the CC if they are successful. Thank you to Member of Parliament Cheryl Gallant protests movement closely for more than three years, and While all of this is unfolding here, the CC AcTo the editor:
Op-eds on June 15 titled “Shame on MP Gallant” by Jane de Snaijer, and a follow up by J. Jimmo on June 22 require a response. It is obvious from their comments that they know little or nothing about the Climate Change Accord, which is being sold to us as gospel in concluding that mankind is somehow to blame for the planet warming. This accord is completely political, seriously flawed, and massively corrupt. Its proponents openly admit that they believe it will only reduce global temperatures by .17 of one degree in the next 30 years; next to nothing. This deception began as the ‘air pollution’ movement, which did not work because industry cleaned up in Canada/U.S., but pollution continued to flow in from Asia, and still does. Then they renamed it ‘global warming,’ where scientists and Al Gore were caught red-handed falsifying documents in order to provide the data results they wanted. The new name now is ‘climate change,’ which I will call CC in this note, (the culprit being carbon emissions). CC is
something that no one can argue with, because the climate has always been changing. Nevertheless, Canada and the U.S. have reduced carbon emissions more than most or any other country in the world. Studies show that if every factory, airplane, train, home furnace, hydro generator and vehicle of any kind in North America was to shut down completely, it would not change the global temperature at all. I applaud MP Cheryl Gallant for not following the CC lemmings over the cliff. Notably, it is mostly liberal leaning governments promoting this fraud, only a few weak conservatives are dragged and pressured into this by our out of control left wing PC culture. Unfortunately, the liberal left, including the liberal left media, have been steadfast in spinning the CC theory, while demonizing anyone who has an objection to it. Liberal activism is very active in academia from elementary to university levels, pushing this and other agenda, and students are graduating with CC firmly implanted within. When a conservative point of view is put forth, the left violently

I am convinced that CC as it is being promoted, is a lie. Signing on to this accord will be so costly to Canadians, that it will sink, or critically damage our economy. The CC movement is a mega job killer for us, and is designed to transfer North America’s wealth to developing nations. Under the CC agreement, in the fine print, Canada (every country) loses its sovereignty over its people, economy, borders, internal order, immigration, and a number of other areas of national decision. Those national decisions will now be dictated by a CC world body that does not have North America’s best interest in mind. At the same time, costs for everything will skyrocket, and many new taxes will be introduced. Canada’s oil industry will be shut down because it is heavy oil (called dirty oil by these people), and is unacceptable to them. Business in general will suffer massive closings and layoffs. Who will pay the bills? Almost every nation on earth is in economic distress, so governments are trying to divert attention to global climate

cord allows China, the world’s worst polluter, to increase its already disastrous pollution levels until 2030, at which time China “only might” begin to reduce theirs: fat chance. India and Brazil are also big polluters, and will be allowed to follow China in continuing to pollute, until India is paid 1.3 trillion dollars, and Brazil is paid 300 to 400 billion in aid (bribe money). Our tax and spend Prime Minister has a whopping majority in parliament, and he is leading us into this trap unobstructed. Sadly, some conservatives are buying into the CC Accord, with no clue as to what is in it. As well, the liberal leaning tech giants are all in for this, because it leaves them in even more control of our lives. We can only hope that something catastrophic happens that will stop this CC madness. Canada and the US, are already far ahead of the rest of the world in reducing emissions, so they should be following us.

Counting birds has its risks MICHAEL RUNTZ
Over my many years I’ve conducted bird surveys in nearly every corner of this province. In 1985 a peregrine falcon survey done for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources took me from Niagara Falls to Lake Superior and Hudson Bay. I was looking to see if any former nesting sites had been recolonized. I’ve done helicopter surveys of waterfowl in northern Ontario for the Canadian Wildlife Service, and canoed for weeks on end while conducting breeding bird surveys in wilderness parks in northwestern Ontario. Nesting bird surveys for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas took me 100 kilometres by canoe down the Muketei River to the Attawapiskat River, and had me trek through treeless tundra along the Hudson Bay coast. In recent years I have walked the coast of James Bay counting migrating shorebirds. Some surveys involved real risk. During the peregrine survey, our tug-
boat died during a ferocious Lake Superior storm and we were almost swept out into the depths of that lake; our SOS call was responded to the next day. In 2005, along the coast of Hudson Bay, a three-day, gale-force storm replete with torrential rain destroyed half of our tents and resulted in our crew being evacuated by helicopter. Recently I took part in a bird survey that offered a very different type of risk. The hazards, however, were not related to boating on a large body of water or to bad weather. The danger came from the birds themselves. I took part in a Canadian Wildlife Service survey of nesting doublecrested cormorants on Middle Brother Island in Lake Ontario. Renowned biologist Chip Weseloh has been working with gulls and other colonial nesting birds on the Great Lakes for many decades and I was honoured to spend some time with him. Four other volunteers came along for this survey, which involved counting cormorant nests on the island. The lake was dead calm and the sky
blue when we left the Kingston dock, two features noticeably absent thus far this summer. Less than half an hour later we were in sight of Middle Brother Island and as we approached we were greeted by waves of cormorants heading out to catch fish for their babies. Even from a distance we could see cormorant nests for they decorated the island trees like bulbs on Christmas trees. Once on the island our instructions were simple: pick a tree, put flagging tape around it, and count its nests. Sounded simple and it was, except for one thing. When you approach a cormorant tree the birds take defensive action. They assault you with a barrage of excrement and regurgitated fish. I will not soon forget Michael Runtz the sound of dead fish smacking the While some Double-crested Cormorants nest on the ground, others ground around me, or dodging endless squirts of white liquid that fell prefer high-rise dwellings. like heavy rain, sometimes missing me, other times making a direct hit. ForTHE TOWNSHIP OF tunately for the surveyors the resulting LANARK HIGHLANDS stains were water-soluble! By the end of the survey more than 2,000 cormorant nests were tallied, many of which resided on the ground as well as in the trees. Break-in at Burnstown Beach canteen Officers from the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating after the canteen at the Burnstown Beach on Calabogie Road was broken into sometime between Tuesday, June 27 around noon and Wednesday, June 28 at 6 p.m. The canteen was entered by breaking a screen and window. Three boxes of large size freezies and a quantity of juice boxes were stolen. Const. Marc Bennett is investigating. The Renfrew detachment investigated 276 calls for service during the past week. Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 10 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with two counts each of sexual assault, uttering threats, forcible confinement and domestic mischief; one female was charged with assault; one male was charged with uttering threats, two counts of domestic mischief, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of marijuana; and one male was charged with domestic mischief. No other criminal offences took place. Animal complaints Pet owners are reminded they should not be bringing animals out with them, only to lock them in a hot car while they go shopping. Temperatures inside vehicles rise very quickly and animals to not have the same ability as humans do to sweat and cool
off. Criminal charges can be laid for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Leaving windows slightly open is not sufficient to cool the interior of a vehicle. Pet owners should leave their pets at home in the summer if they cannot supervise them. If you see a pet in a vehicle you believe is in distress call the OSPCA at 310-SPCA. For more information visit the SPCA’s www.nohotpets.ca Impaired driver One male is facing charges after police investigated a single vehicle collision on Hwy. 17 at Goshen Road in the Township of McNab/Braeside. Police responded to the incident on Friday June 30 at approximately 10:55 p.m. The male driver was arrested after failing a roadside alcohol screening device. Following further breath tests at the detachment a 50-yearold man from Johnstown, Ont. was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on August 2. Const. Carlvin Burgins investigated. Lock it or Lose it Renfrew and Arnprior OPP officers continue to investigate numerous thefts from unlocked vehicles. This crime is easily prevented - by locking your vehicle. Even more importantly please remove valuables from your vehicle when it is unattended. Stolen property included wallets, loose change and tools.

Valley boy shows Redblacks made right move with historic first- ever pick JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com
Spending his first five years of life in the Valley was all Nolan MacMillan needed to entrench the work ethic and community spirit needed to be the Redblacks’ first ever draft pick, setting the foundation for a team that has won one Grey Cup, competed in two and brought football back to Ottawa. MacMillan, a six-foot-six, 294-pound offensive lineman who lines up at guard for the Redblacks, spent the first day of his life in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. “I was in Arnprior for about 24 hours and then moved to Renfrew until I was five,” the 26-year-old said. “My younger brother was born in Renfrew.” After kindergarten, the MacMillan family moved to the Toronto area. It wasn’t until he attended St. Michael’s College School in Toronto that he was able to apply those Valley-instilled characteristics to football. “They have a great football program there; I won three championships in four years,” MacMillan told Metroland Media following the 31-31 tie against Calgary at the Redblack’s season-opener on June 23. “It’s a tremendous winning culture, where I was instilled with a hard work ethic by coach Paul Forbes. All my best friends are from high school football.” From there, MacMillan spent a
Jake Davies/Metroland
Nolan MacMillan was born in Arnprior and spent his early years living in Renfrew before moving on to become the Redblacks first ever draft pick in 2013. prep year in New Jersey, “and then I was fortunate enough to get a scholarship to Iowa,” he said. Although, hard work, dedication and skill had more to do with it than luck. MacMillan was a decorated member of the University of Iowa Hawkeye football team — a program known for its offensive line. In his 2013 senior year, he was a member of the Academic All-Big Ten team for the second time in his career while playing right guard in five games.
In 2012, he played in nine games playing the left guard, left tackle and right guard positions during the season. He missed the final three due to injury. In 2011, he was named to the All-Big Ten third team in the pre-season. In 2010, he was named to the Freshman AllAmerica pre-season fourth team as well as several other pre-season all star teams by outlets covering college football. He was a starter at right guard throughout the season but missed several games due to injury. MacMillan
was drafted ninth overall by the Redblacks in 2013, with the expectation he would play for Iowa in his last year. He signed his first contract with the Redblacks on May 28, 2014. Since that time, he has played in 45 regular season games for the Redblacks — every one in 2014 and 2015, and seven last year as he missed several due to injury. MacMillan has started both games this season but missed the Toronto game on July 8 due to injury. Although he missed more than half of last season, MacMillan made the most of his time away from the field by working in the community. Last year, MacMillan was one of nine CFL nominees for the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award. The award is presented to the Canadian CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans: strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities. As MacMillan rehabbed a wrist injury, he led all Redblacks players in hours spent working in the community. MacMillan served meals to the homeless, helped out as a minor football guest coach on several occasions and participated in various school assemblies to engage and mentor youth in the National Capital Region. General manager Marcel Desjardins says what’s important during the draft is if the player can play. “To have him play for us from the get-go and contribute right away was

a big boost for us,” Desjardins told Metroland Media on July 5. “He came from a good pedigree, even before Iowa. He has athleticism, flexibility based on his sound football knowledge. He gives us some flexibility even within a game. If there’s an injury, we know we can move him to tackle, if necessary. It definitely helps our depth, (as) tackle is the harder position to play. The offensive line is the foundation of everything we do on offense. So, they might not get the glory in the papers, but we know they are important to us.” But an athlete who is good in the community, is often good in the locker-room too. “It’s very important to us,” Desjardins said. “It shows the character, not only as a football player, but as a person. It’s important for him to get out and share what he has learned and be a positive role model. In order to do that, you have to spend a lot of time in the area in the off-season.” MacMillan says he’s visited the Valley a couple of times since playing with the Redblacks, but no longer has family there. When asked if he’s considered a Valley ambassador for football, he says he’ll “have to work on that.” But Desjardins, who has relatives in Pembroke, doesn’t quite agree. “It’s nice to know our reach has expanded to the Ottawa Valley,” he said. “And you (the Upper Ottawa Valley) should take credit for him, he’s been a good contributor for the Redblacks.”

Golf
Mountain Creek: Wet? No sweat! WENDY TESSIER
What golfer, whether a year-rounder or a snowbird, wasn’t chomping at the bit, eager for spring golf ? But Mother Nature has been in a snit! So far, it’s been the season of the ‘big wet.’ On the plus side, the fairways have never been greener, the greens never so soft and accepting of a nice high Phil Mickelson flop shot. But grass being that receptive means no roll, less distance, plugged balls, damp feet, higher scores and griping golfers. Mountain Creek Golf Course, like its fellow operators in the area, is staying the course in defiance of inclement weather. And surely summer will see more sun! Like Canada who is feting its 150th birthday, it’s a celebratory year for Mountain Creek as well: 25 years of great golfing! And the course is in full swing: Men’s and Ladies’ Nights run rain or shine and are populated with people hungry for good golf, competition and food. Gary Croucher again captains the men’s league and Lenora Homulos, in her first year at Mountain Creek as captain, ensures the ladies enjoy interesting formats and weekly challenges. Both groups’ intersectional qualifiers have been run and match plays begun, not to mention the Tin Cup, Birdy Tree, Ringer Boards and Mixers.

Coming up for the men next week is the Top Gun. Gary recently shared with the men a piece on honesty and integrity being an essential part of golf, which is worth repeating here. This particular paragraph underscored his point: In an Intersectional qualifier final round 4, one of the competitors realized he had 15 clubs in his bag (14 is the maximum). He disqualified himself and as a result did not make the Intersectional team. This is a prime example of an individual golfer showing the honesty which makes golf unique. Overheard were a few players who wondered how he could call that on himself. In golf, calling a rule infringement on yourself is expected and reflects not only the character of the individual but his or her respect for the game rules of golf. Mountain Creek is proud of you, sir! Seniors’ Day Group has grown exponentially this year thanks to captain Gord Clark and his band of merrymakers’ creative ideas. Every Wednesday, the seniors wrap their heads around new and old favourite golf formats that see much fun and frolic occur over 18 holes. Here’s a sample from Gord’s latest report: Thirty-five patriotic souls, decked out in their finest Canadian sartorial splendour, took to the somewhat soggy fairways of Mountain Creek for the Canada 150 Scramble. POSTMA
Fern Stevenson
March 1, 1932 – June 28, 2017 After a 10 year valiant battle with Alzheimer’s, our darling wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother was liberated from the prison of her sickness and transported by an angel to paradise to be with her Saviour and Lord waiting for the resurrection. Fern was loved, cherished, respected, and enjoyed by our two children and their spouses, our 9 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren plus the extended family who loved her dearly. Fernie was a free spirit. She was full of music. My young brother Kees gave her a harmonica some years ago. She mastered it even learning to play the classics. She was fun to be with. She had infectious laughter. She was exuberant and joyful, did not have a pious fiber in her being. She was totally honest and forthright, her deep navy blue eyes were like pools of mystery. My entire being loved her. Our friends in Holland loved this “Dutch Speaking” Canadian. She stole the show at a huge farmers market with dozens of vendors shouting their wares, she picked up a mic and outdid them all, shouting “I am a Canadian farmer, my strawberries are the best” while the gathering crowd shouted their approval all while the carillon chimed and the Dixy band played and at the end everybody wanted to touch her and kiss and offered her a job. My darling is now in a greater glory than the finite human mind can imagine. We miss her terribly! We are comforted she is free from the confines of her wheelchair, her sick body, her mental confusion. Thank God she is free at last. Internment was at 11:00 am July 2, Sandpoint Cemetery, 2 kms from where she was born and 2 kms from where we met in 1952. After the funeral a luncheon was served at the Bonnechere Manor. Heartfelt thanks to the Bonnechere Manor family who cared for my Darling so lovingly. All of you have a special place in my heart!
SMITH, RYAN JAMES (Sales Representative - Frito Lay) At the Kingston General Hospital while surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, July 4th, 2017; Ryan James Smith of Smiths Falls passed away following a courageous journey through cancer at the age of 36. Dear brother of Keith Smith and Michelle Schnob and uncle of Rowen, Jaxton and Arial. Lifelong best friend of Bradley Kiser. Dear son-in-law of Rachelle Goudie and Gordon Goudie and brother-in-law of Amber Goudie. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Relatives and friends are invited to share their memories of Ryan with his family during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Saturday, July 15th from 12 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. A Service to honour Ryan will follow in the Pilon Family Chapel at 3 p.m. In memory of Ryan, please donate blood and/or sign your donor card. Harry Roland Llewelyn C.D. 51 Sgt. RCAMC
In loving memory of my dear husband September 20, 1923 – July 12, 2016 A lonely tear and the saddest eyes, I have ever seen, you suddenly passed away. You were my love, you were my life. The day you left, my life went to. Now I exist from day to day. It is so sad, to walk this road alone, instead of side by side. You gave to me, through the years, such joy and happiness. You were so kind, loving and gentle, always gave a helping hand. It was the joy you gave me, when you were by my side. You left me such beautiful memories, I will treasure through the years. Now there is only sorrow and tears. You joined the army in 1941. Shortly after you were posted overseas. In 1946 you were posted back to Canada to Camp Borden. In 1952 you were posted to Korea for 1 year. Through the years, you were posted to various locations in Canada including Whitehorse, Y.T. for 3 years. Then came 3 years in Germany. This posting was different. I joined you over there. We travelled when we could. Oh the places that we saw. The Leaning Tower, Vatican, and the Tower of London just to name a few. Your tour was finished and we were home again. There were more postings in Canada. Then you left the military. You served your country well. Then came civilian life. They said it is too hard to adjust. But as you went to work each day, you adjusted well. You retired in 1988. We travelled some. Oh how we enjoyed our quiet time. You would get out our picture album, down memory lane we’d go. As you turned the pages, laughter would ring out. It seemed like we were there again. When I get our an album, as I turn the pages, there is no laughter. It’s not the same. With a heavy heart I close the book. I’ll try another day. When my time has come at last, in your footsteps I will walk. I know when I’ve reached my journey’s end, I will see you standing there. With a joyful cry, together again, you knew I’d follow you. Oh how I miss you, Love you forever Olga

It didn’t matter a whit if you were an Irish Catholic, a German Lutheran, or someone from some other background, everyone for miles around went to the Orangeman’s parade on the 12th of July. Father and the brothers were up at the crack of dawn to do the chores early, and Mother and Audrey were making the lunch to take into Renfrew long before I was out of bed. It would be the most exciting event since the parade several years ago. Towns took turns in hosting the 12th of July, and that year it was Renfrew’s turn. If you didn’t get into town early to park on the main street, you had to go to wherever you could find a spot, and you then ended up standing in the blazing sun under one of the awnings a very few stores had over their doorways. And so that morning, we headed into Renfrew at a time when we would usually be just eating our breakfast. Every ounce of me tingled with excitement. There was nothing that thrilled me more than marching bands and crowds of people, and I could certainly be assured of both as we drove into town in the Model T, hoping we could make the 12.5 mile trip without a flat tire. “Couldn’t be better,” Father said as he wheeled the car next to the curb right in front of the Chinese restaurant. “When can we have the lunch?” Emerson wanted to know. Mother just rolled her eyes in answer. He was treading on thin ice to begin with, as he fought Everett to sit next to the back window, which wasn’t a window at all, but rolled up curtains tied with narrow leather straps. It seemed like hours had passed before we heard the bands coming onto the main street from the fair grounds, and I knew from remembering the last Orangeman’s Parade, that leading the bands and people walking down Raglan Street, would be King Billy on a white horse, dressed in white himself, with sashes and ribbons in bright orange. I was fair tingling by the time we saw the white horse three blocks away, and you could hear the people clapping and cheering, as the Orangemen marched behind bands. They too, were all dressed in white, with orange banners across their chests. Catholic! Audrey told me to hush up and listen to the bands soon to be in front of us, as we leaned against the Model T. And then we heard the clomp-clomp of hooves, and knew King Billy would soon appear. And appear he did! Such splendour! Such vivid colours, and the plumed hat, which was obviously too big for him, covering his eyes, so that he had to toss his head back every few seconds to see where he was going and wave to the throngs of people. And right behind King Billy was the Orangeman who was obviously just as important as King Billy himself. He had a small drum attached to his waist somehow, but he was also blowing into the tiniest horn I had ever seen. His white cap was rimmed with orange braid, and every so often he would take the horn and use it to push the cap back, and then he’d give the little drum a rap with the horn for good measure. He didn’t look right to me, and it was Father’s comment, which told me why. “He’s as drunk as a hoot-owl,” he said. “I don’t think he’ll make it as far as the swinging bridge.” I lost count of the number of bands and the people walking behind, some children far younger than I was, dressed in full regalia for the day. And right then I made up my mind that as soon as I was old enough I was going to become an Orangeman! I couldn’t think of anything more exciting than walking in a parade dressed in white with an orange sash, and band music filling the air. Even though my sister said you had to be Irish and preferably a Catholic, which I doubted, I decided if I had to give up the Lutheran Church, and my German heritage, so be it! At that young age, I decided if that was the price of becoming an Orangeman, it was a price I was willing to pay! Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you may need to make some modifications to your strategy as a situation continues to evolve. Don’t be afraid of change, as it is necessary to get the job done. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 It can be difficult to separate facts from the fiction, Taurus. However, you generally are a good lie detector. Put your skills to use to determine if someone is stringing you along.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, allow your plans for self-improvement to take center stage, especially true if you have put them on the shelf for some time. Make yourself a priority. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you don’t tend to be reckless, but even you can surprise others sometimes with your behavior. Let the tongues wag if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, take others’ candor with a grain of salt. They might just be blowing off steam and they will appreciate having someone there who listens. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you sometimes have a sarcastic sense of humor that makes you loved by some and disliked

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, some shocking information may find you reeling if you do not stay grounded. Although it comes as a surprise, with some processing you will be able to handle it.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, address a potentially mess situation before it gathers too much steam. Communication is all that’s needed to ensure cooler heads ultimately prevail.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you’re very good at balancing the elements of your life. This week may be especially challenging as many things come your way in rapid succession. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, others may seem sure about their actions even if you feel lost. Don’t put too much stock in it, as everyone copes with self-doubt from time to time. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Some of your beliefs are non-negotiable, Pisces. This can make for some rather heated conversations. But you’re up to the challenge.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
