Arnprior singers well represented at Bluesfest in Ottawa Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

Two Arnprior singers made the shortlist of 10 on a competition hosted by the 2017 Bluesfest. Ainsley Phillips and Vicki Brittle got through a nationwide search for She’s The One: Emerging Female Artists Competition. The competition zeroed in on the best young singers (ages 13 to 21) by examining videos participants submitted. The winner enjoyed seeing all related costs paid for — including recording and travel — along with collaboration with industry songwriters and producers to create a potential hit song. They also were given all access rock start treatment at the festival and introduced to some of the most influential movers and shakers in the music industry. “Both Vicki and Ainsley impressed the judges tremendously! Unfortunately, they did not take the prize home after the competition,” said organizers. Cassidy Glecoff, from Haliburton, ON, took home the title. Finalists Ainsley and Vicki have plenty in common, including their link to Arnprior Main Street School of Music. They shared an instructor, Randy Scott, and even a musician who shared the stage with them at

Bluesfest, Anders Drerup. Ainsley, 13, was surprised and excited to make the shortlist. She would perform two songs, Blue and Something in the Water, originally sung by Patsy Cline and LeAnn Rimes respectively. “Blue is a sad song and it reminds me of family and friends lost,” Ainsley said. “Something in the Water is happy (to show emotional range).” She wasn’t sure if music is something she wants to pursue in the future. The Grade 7 student is simply enjoying the process and having fun at Main Street. Vicki is becoming well known for her songwriting, becoming a finalist this year in the International Songwriting Competition. She liked the Bluesfest experience. “Yesterday was wonderful. Sharing the light of music with the female youth and performing in the Barney Danson theatre was absolutely wonderful,” Vicki said. “I’m so happy to have the opportunity to participate in events like that. In the next 12 months I will be pushing harder than ever despite yesterday’s outcome. I want to thank the Barney Danson theatre crew, sound technicians, my band, and Derek Dunn/Metroland my parents for the ongoing support, Ainsley Phillips, 13 years old, and instructor Anders Drerup practice for a Bluesfest competition at Main and the Main Street School of Music Street School of Music. Two girls from the Arnprior music school are finalists at this year’s She’s The One. for their constant encouragement.”

ARH receives major funding Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Major renovations are coming to the Arnprior hospital thanks to new provincial funding. July 13, Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) received the news from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that it will receive $2,063,690 for 10 important infrastructure projects submitted in April. This funding, along with the previously announced $273,349 for routine infrastructure projects, brings the total grant amount for 2017 to $2,337,039. “It’s been our largest capital announcement we have had since the emergency department, it is very significant for us,” said Eric Hanna, president and chief executive officer. “The emergency department was completed about seven years ago but we have not had this large of an investment by the Ministry of Health made in seven years.” The Ottawa Hospital, CHEO, Bruyère Continuing Care, Montfort Hospital, QueenswayCarleton Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute will also receive a total of $8.8-million this year from the province’s Hospital Infrastructure Renewal Fund, Ottawa South MPP John Fraser announced July 11. “HIRF investments in hospitals across Ontario and in the Arnprior region will help ensure that our hospitals continue to deliver world class care here in our community,” said Fraser, in a press release on the Arnprior announcement. Barb Darlow, chair of the ARH board, was also pleased with the announcement. “We are extremely grateful for the investments made by the government of Ontario in Arnprior Regional Health,” said Darlow in the statement. Included in the announcement is $400,000 for improvements to the community programs wing at the Grove nursing home, and renovated patient rooms, exterior windows, and chiller replacements at the hospital. “It demonstrates the commitment of the Ministry of Health in making sure our health care facilities are in good condition and are up to today’s building standards and it also demonstrates their willingness to demonstrate better patient experiences and outcome,” said Hanna. Hanna notes these investments are addressing two key areas - patient safety and patient experience. “These important investments in infrastructure mean that hospitals like Arnprior Regional Health are better able to address the growing need for acute-care services in their

communities. The goal is to provide a supportive and healing environment for patients, not only for today but also for the future,” said Chantale LeClerc, chief executive officer, Champlain Local Health Integration Network in the release. The roof is being replaced over the community services/day program wing at the Grove. “We want to repurpose the space and so by making sure the building is in good shape that means the program expansion we are now starting to consider, we will have a space for them well into the next 20 years with a roof on them instead of having to go out an fundraise for that,” said Hanna. The window replacement will cost close to $600,000. “We are replacing windows in the 1960s and 1970s building. They are aluminum, they are pretty much long past their life span, so they are not energy efficient any more and they don’t necessarily slide up and down as well as you would like them to,” said Hanna. “So those are being replaced. That’s quite a few window some cases it’s three floors - that’s an awful lot of windows. They are renovating two large patient rooms to make the washrooms accessible at a cost of $85,000. “Right now the doors are not wide enough to get wheelchairs in and you can’t get a wheelchair in and turn it around in the bathrooms because it was built in the 1960s so they need to be expanded and renovated,” said Hanna. They will also be making improvements to the chiller, costing $64,000, which is an ongoing replacement of the HVAC system. “That compliments last year’s investment that we got - close to $1.8 million - which was for a new boiler, which again is part of the heating system so we are getting most of our HVAC system replaced over these two years,” said Hanna. In the last three years ARH has received close to $5 million in facility improvements. “The bad news is the facility was getting old and it needed to have quite a few repairs and updates done and the good news is that the Ministry of Health through its allocations have found ways to fund these,” said Hanna. The renovations for the patient rooms were anticipated and are ready to start immediately as well as the roof at the Grove, which was jointly tendered a couple a years ago. As to the windows, they will need to go to tender. He does not have a timeline on those repairs yet. The improvements at both facilities are scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2018.

‘Give ’Em Hec!’ recounts colourful politician’s life Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

“I want to buy your book,” a man says while pointing at a little guy in a big fedora, seated on a bench on Arnprior’s main street. It could have been Renfrew’s main street. Or his hometown of Pembroke. Wherever he goes in the county, the little guy in a big fedora — Hector Clouthier — meets up with people he knows. And if he doesn’t know them, he introduces himself. While on that street corner in Arnprior, the area’s MP from 1997 to 2000, acknowledges everyone who went by, from the little girl with her cheek sporting a press-on Canada flag tattoo — “I’ve got a flag, too, here on my lapel. I love that flag” — to a woman with an empty picture frame — “You should put a picture of yourself in there. It would be beautiful.” Most he knew. The furniture owner retiring after many decades. He would talk as long as they wanted, overpraising them and underpraising himself, at ease talking politics and marathons, horse racing and hockey. He’s the consummate backslapping politician, going back to his first campaign as an independent in 1988 along with several since. It is a stark contrast to his longtime nemesis, Ren-

Derek Dunn/Metroland

Hector Clouthier, left, sells his autobiography to Brian Rafter in downtown Arnprior, across the street from the bookstore he will be signing copies at on July 22. frew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant. A lengthy story in his recently published autobiography, Give ’Em Hec!, illustrates the point. It was soon after the bitterly contested election of 2000 and begins with Clouthier meeting up with Gallant in the Tim Hortons on Daniel Street in Arnprior. According to the autobiography, the two acknowledged one another before she retrieved her

order and left. He worked the room for 20 minutes or more then left for the parking lot. His assistant was waiting in his car the entire time. She said Gallant was in her van, still in the parking lot. It was curious, but didn’t stop him from backing out of his space. “Gallant’s vehicle storms out of its spot and comes dangerously close to clipping my back end as I reversed,” reads the book. “I couldn’t believe it.”

The now legendry story is described in great detail as the two vehicles make their way toward Renfrew. He claims Gallant drove dangerously, entering the passing lane at one point only to slow down and force others to pass from the outside lane; until Clouthier’s approached wherein she cut him off. Her daughters, also on board, were waving their middle fingers at him, he wrote. “By now we were approaching the traffic lights at the Renfrew turnoff at Bruce Street. Mrs. Gallant had slowed down dramatically, almost as if she wanted to arrive on the red signal,” he wrote. When it turned green again, “on the shoulder of the road, there’s an OPP officer, weapon drawn, and he’s waving me in.” Gallant had phoned police saying she was being pursued by a car matching Clouthier’s description. Nothing more came of the incident, which got a lot of play in local newspapers at the time. If it wasn’t for his witness, his assistant, Clouthier is convinced Gallant would have had him jailed. Instead he has had to live with many thinking less of him; the term “stalker” still haunts him. “I’m a guy that’s been called a lot of things by a lot of people and maybe some of it’s right. But that stuff crossed the line and hurt, a lot. It was done with intent, which made it even worse,” he wrote.

“That wasn’t the worst of it. She put her family right in the middle of a scheme gone wrong, and her operation of that motor vehicle was both negligent and dangerous. “Beyond me, though, the original target, it hurt my family, too. And I’ll bet, on some level, mine wasn’t the only one.” Clouthier’s acceptance that some names he’s been called may be right sets him apart, too. He often says he is no better and no worse than anyone else. It is a level of honesty and self awareness that not everyone, certainly not every elected politician, attains. Asked about his legacy, Clouthier fell back on the basics. “I’d like to be remembered as someone who always told the truth, come hell or high water. Some would like it, some didn’t,” he said, with a wave and smile to another passerby. “Truthful and honest, in life and politics. And, hey, sometimes it doesn’t always work out. That’s a great legacy, in my opinion, to leave behind for my children and grandchildren.” Give ’Em Hec! Is about 60 per cent politics and 40 per cent family and social life in the region and beyond. It is available on Amazon and at local bookstores. He will again be signing copies at The Arnprior Book Shop, 152 John St. N., on Saturday July 22, from 12 to 3 p.m.

SELLING OTTAWA & THE VALLEY FOR ALL IT'S WORTH!

Businesses combine efforts for Arnprior boy with Mito disease Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

It was the first time Sarah Tait went any amount of time without using her sight. And it gave her great insight into how her son lives each and every day. Nicholas Antonakos has Mitochondrial disease - Mito for short. It’s a newly named group of disorders that affect the mitochondria in different cells of the body. The nine-year-old was diagnosed early on. As an infant he suffered multiple seizures on a daily basis. The effects on various organs, including the eyes, are debilitating. Enter Chris Dziekan, owner of The 2 Grands, who upon hearing his customer Sarah’s story immediately set to work. She has her own drink, the Sarah Whiskey Ramble, with all proceeds going to Mito. At one point, the drink caused the LCBO to sell out of one ingredient. Then came the Le Noir: Dine and Drink in Complete Darkness. The sold-out evening saw patrons wear special wraparound glasses to block light. Restaurant staff moved through very dimmed light, too. It was a first for Tait. “It was really eye-opening for me. I’ve lived with him for nine years and never did that,” Tait said. Some customers were scared and felt vulnerable in the dark. That hasn’t been the case for Nicholas. “He’s always happy and never upset. He doesn’t let his disabilities affect his life,” Tait said. “He’s a fighter and never complains.” Typically, children with Mito only reach their early teens. Suffering hundreds of seizures a day, as he did in infancy, takes a toll that many can’t bounce back from. But Tait says her boy is doing better. Some people live their whole lives

with it. “Never say never. He has defied all the odds.” Dziekan — himself dealing with health issues - doubled his wait staff for the event. His kitchen staff came in 12 hours early to prepare the 10-course, 600-dish dinner. It might not be the wisest business model, but his is different sort of restaurant: workers play an instrument and insist on volunteering for some events. “They’ve told me — if you pay me I’m not working,” said Dziekan, who also plays piano at the Grove Nursing Home on a weekly basis. “This is also about local businesses working together for a good cause.” He is referring to Cartwright Springs, the Pakenham brewery that matched proceeds on pints sold at the fundraiser. Mayor David Reid was impressed by the cooperation, the contribution by residents, and the awareness brought to Mito. Many in town know his daughter is also special needs. He shared a bit of advice at the event. “I want to thank you all for taking this initiative. This is really fabulous,” he said. “You’ve got to make sure your child doesn’t hide what they have.” He and Tait agreed that small towns might approach kids with special needs differently. They are welcomed in schools, among classmates, and throughout the community in groups such as Special Olympics. Adults also find jobs at places like The 2 Grands. “I’m not from a small town. I came to Arnprior and everyone just rallies around you,” Tait said. “Everyone, like Chris, doesn’t hesitate to rally around.” In total, $500 was raised for Mito Canada. The next Le Noir is July 21 and 22. The goal is to raise enough money to buy a piece of equipment for Arnprior Regional Health.

County designates new Algonquin Trail as multi-use

Flood fundraiser

Derek Dunn/Metroland

Participants were still strolling in moments before the dinner and dance for the spring flood victims got underway on June 30 at Nick Smith Centre. Volunteer Ann Conway greets everyone who enters and accepts contributions.

On June 28, County of Renfrew Council passed a motion recommending that the 219 km Algonquin Trail portion of the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail (OVRT) be designated as multi-use, which includes all methods of selfpropelled transportation, as well as horseback riding, snowmobiles, ATVs and side-by-sides as defined by the Off-Road Vehicles Act, O. Reg 316/03, s. 1, as amended. The motion includes a provision that the county would consider bypass/twinning alternatives presented by local municipalities that are prepared to support and fund them. This motion follows the original intent of the use of the corridor and provides direction on the future use of the Algonquin Trail within the Management Plan. Partnering with Lanark County and Papineau-Cameron Township, the 296 km OVRT corridor stretches from Smiths Falls to Mattawa. Renfrew County hosted six public open houses in the fall of 2016, many comments were received about motorized versus non-motorized use of the trail. With the passing of this motion the County of Renfrew joins its partner municipalities who have also declared their sections to be multi-use. Branch trails or bypasses could be designed to encourage specific use (e.g. motorized) and would consequently enable some sections of the main trail to become non-motorized while still offering a continuous motorized trail. The

trail corridor passes through 10 municipalities within the county and the City of Pembroke, and will form the “spine” of a future countywide trail network as contemplated in the County of Renfrew Trails Strategy. Chair of the Algonquin Trail Advisory Committee and the Development & Property Committee, Coun. Bob Sweet states: “The county council resolution enables the county to move forward with the creation of a management plan and also allows the local municipalities to explore options for use in their jurisdiction.” Warden of the County of Renfrew, Jennifer Murphy expresses, “This is a great milestone to see sections of the Algonquin Trail being open for the public to enjoy this fall.” The County of Renfrew, along with its partners, has engaged the Ontario Trails Council (OTC) for the creation of a management plan for the entire trail. The OTC will be reviewing all public comments supplied through the open houses, emails and phone conversations. The completion date for the management plan is August 31, 2017. The County of Renfrew will be working on a number of sections of the Algonquin Trail (Petawawa, Renfrew and Arnprior and with proceeds from the Zombie Run a portion of the trial in Pembroke) throughout the summer and fall to make the necessary improvements to start opening the trail to the public.

It is amazing how isolating the language barrier can be, PAW committee member Katherine Miller-Gatenby told those at a PAW information session in Arnprior on July 5. That’s why one of the roles which volunteers with PAW can play is just spending time with the refugees, helping them practice speaking English. Going shopping with refugees to help them get familiar with stores in Canada is another way that volunteers with PAW can help refugees become socialized with Canadian society. The experience with the first family also showed the PAW group the important role that food and hospitality play in making refugees feel at home in their new surroundings. Just being welcoming and friendly is a key in helping refugees get settled. “A smile and ‘Welcome to Canada’ goes a very long way,” Miller-Gatenby said. But a major challenge for the PAW group centres on transportation and having enough volunteer drivers available to drive the refugees around, not only in the community but even to Ottawa on occasion. In the case of this newest refugee family, there will be a need for lots of women volunteers for this transportation role as the two female refugees, due to their cultural background, will not travel in a vehicle with just a male driver present. Hence the need for a woman to be present as well. Besides the need for volunteer drivers, the PAW group also requires volunteers to help in other ways such as looking after the dental needs of the refugees and helping the refugees become familiar with Canada’s banking and monetary systems. For more info or to get involved visit www. projectarnpriorwelcome.ca or Facebook. PAW committee member Katherine Miller-Gatenby can be contacted at 613-622-0509 or Rev. Hilary Murray of the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour can be contacted at 613-623-3882.

The population of Arnprior is growing by two this week thanks to the refugee sponsorship efforts of Emmanuel Anglican Parish of Arnprior and the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour. These two Anglican parishes, working with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, this week are welcoming two refugees, a mother and a daughter, who have been in a refugee camp in Turkey but who originally come from Iran. This is the second refugee sponsorship experience for Emmanuel Anglican Parish of Arnprior which welcomed a Syrian family in 2016. For the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour which comprises both St. George’s Anglican Church in Fitzroy Harbour and St. Thomas Anglican Church in Woodlawn, this is its initial refugee sponsorship initiative. Last year the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour decided to help sponsor a refugee family, setting a minimum fundraising goal of $5,000 which has been surpassed. When Emmanuel Anglican Parish of Arnprior decided to sponsor a second refugee family, the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour joined the initiative, becoming one of the partners in Project Arnprior Welcome (PAW), phase two. The two ministers, Rev. Cathy McCaig of Emmanuel Anglican and Rev. Hilary Murray of the Anglican Parish of Fitzroy Harbour, knew each other from previous experiences, an added benefit for this refugee partnership. Rev. McCaig is familiar with West Carleton as she lives in Dunrobin. Both ministers will be among those on hand at the Ottawa Airport this week to welcome this new refugee family comprised of a 53-year-old mother and her 18 year old daughter. Not much is known about them as their names were picked off a list of approved refugees provided by the Anglican Diocese. What is known is that they speak only Farsi, not Arabic, that their education levels are Grade 11 and Grade 8 and that the mother is a hairdresser who did own her own business. It is not known what happened to the husband and father but it is known that this mother and daughter were deemed to be “women at risk” and in need of a safe home as refugees. “Women at risk” is one of the categories of refugee as defined by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, covering any females who have a well founded risk of persecution in their homeland. The Project Arnprior Welcome (PAW) has arranged for a two-bedroom apartment for this mother and daughter refugee family. There is still a need for some furniture but the group is waiting until the two arrive before making decisions about clothing and other matters. They will be staying with a PAW committee member for their initial few days or weeks in Canada to help them get used to their new country before moving into their apartment. The PAW group learned a lot from hosting its first family from Syria which is now well established in the Arnprior community, with the children in school and language training in place. This first refugee family has even had a new baby since arriving in Arnprior. The PAW group has learned from its first successful refugee experience and will use this experience going forward with this new refugee family of two. English as a second language classes have now been established in Arnprior, run by volunteers and serving the needs not only of refugees

Better safe than sorry this summer season Summer is upon as and while it’s easy to get caught up in the fun and excitement of the season, it’s important to keep safety in mind as we go about enjoying all the wonderful Ottawa Valley and beyond has to offer. Several water-related deaths have already occurred this season and emergency officials remind the public to keep safety top of mind. Tragic and avoidable fatalities, caused by drowning, occur across Canada every year, say the Ontario Provincial Police. It is especially important for adults to keep an eye on their young children, whether they are playing on the beach, the backyard pool, or in a bathtub. Small children can drown in only a few centimetres of water. Police remind the public that even older children or strong adult swimmers can find themselves in distress when swimming or wading in an area with a strong current or in a weeded area. It’s always best to know your waters, swim with a buddy and consider wearing a lifejacket.

Alcohol consumption is another factor that contributes to fatalities in the water, both for swimmers and boaters. If boating this summer, the OPP would like to encourage the public to follow these safety tips: • Always wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) • Ensure the PFD fits snug and securely • Use common sense and operate any vessel responsibly • Operate your watercraft at safe speeds at all times, especially in crowded areas • Be courteous of others using the water and obey all boating rules •Be cautious of swimmers and other marine operators, and always have a spotter for water-skiers and tube riders • Stay alert, keep your eyes on the water. • Avoid alcohol- alcohol and watercrafts don’t mix If you suspect that someone is operating a boat while impaired, call 9-1-1. For information on boating safety check www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.

Kudos to council for new downtown market To the editor:

As downtown business owners located on John Street we would like to applaud the creative thinking on the part of our town council for establishing our downtown Sunday market. We love it. Not only has it made for a more vibrant, positive atmosphere for our stores on a day not typically busy, some of us have even decided to expand our Sunday business hours to accommodate the increased foot traffic. It has brought new customers to

our downtown core and that is wonderful. It is true that for a little while longer parking will continue to be challenging but thankfully this is a temporary situation. We can look forward to even bigger and better things next summer when our downtown revitalization project is finally complete. Kudos to Arnprior for moving forward! Peatlands are special places To me, all habitats are equally fascinating. Whether it is a hardwood forest, cattail marsh or beaver pond, each has its own special ambience as well as unique flora and fauna. But if I had to pick one in which to make one last excursion, it would likely be a peatland. Peatlands are named after the soil they create. Peat is comprised of partially decomposed plant material and is usually dominated by sphagnum moss. Because the rate of growth of new sphagnum exceeds the rate of decomposition of dead sphagnum, a peatland grows thicker over time. And because the moss mat grows out over water, the youngest part of the mat is afloat. There are two main types of peatlands: bogs and fens. While different criteria are used to differentiate them, they differ primarily in how nutrients arrive. True bogs have minerals delivered by rainfall while fens have theirs brought by streams and other types of groundwater. Recently I visited a fen on White Lake and a bog in

Whether it is a hardwood forest, cattail marsh or beaver pond, each has its own special ambience as well as unique flora and fauna.

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Algonquin Park. Both habitats harboured orchids, with rose pogonia and grass pink being the two most common. Both of these orchids are pink and they share more than colour. As do all orchids, one of their three petals — the labellum — is modified as a landing platform for insects. But in these species, that petal contains modified hairs that look like pollenbearing stamens. This visual lure attract pollinators, usually bumble bees. In a pogonia, as the bee walks farther back into the flower, it unknowingly rubs against the real sex organs situated above it. Grass pink does things

differently. Unusual in orchids, its landing platform is situated as the uppermost, not the lowermost, petal. And this petal is hinged. When a bee lands on the labellum, its weight makes the petal swing down, pinning the bee upside down in a winged coffin. The bee must squeeze out to freedom, in the process leaving behind pollen from a previous trip to another grass pink, and picking up a new load of pollen as it exits. Orchids aren’t the only reason I love peatlands. Nutrients are hard to find, so a number of plants get phosphorus and nitrogen by eating insects. Sundews catch insects with sticky leaf traps while Pitcher plants use pitfall leaf traps. Insects that climb into the latter’s leaf slide down into water where they drown and get digested by bacteria and enzymes released by the

plant. When I was in the Algonquin bog, I photographed a fly larva that actually lives in Pitcher plant leaves and devours flies that drown in those traps! Peatlands are also home to special insects including elfin skimmers, whose 10-15-millimetre wingspan makes them the second smallest dragonfly in the world! The blue-gray males develop a pale covering over their bodies (pruinosity) while the yellow-and-black females look like wasps. Both fly at about kneelevel so one has to constantly look down as you walk. And there is another reason to keep looking down. One soon sinks on a floating mat, so standing still has its risks. Speaking from experience, one must never stand too long, agog in a bog! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

he would go stiff as a board, snarl, and glare at me, and act like maiming me for life was a distinct possibility. So, I left him alone. The barn cats were never allowed in the house. Mother thought anything walking on four feet should be in the barn! I never knew where all the kittens came from. I thought everyone in Northcote had a pile of them, and I heard that some people, when the numbers grew, put them in a grist bag and threw them in the Bonnechere River. The very thought sent chills right through my body, and I was grateful none of our cats came to that end. And it wasn’t unusual for someone like Two Mile Herman to bring a kitten to the Northcote School and try to talk someone into taking it home. This rarely worked, since we all had our own barnful of cats. No one could remember when or where Sparky came from. But one day my older brother Everett said it was Sparky who was responsible for the pack of cats we housed in the barn. I couldn’t imagine how that was possible. He never left the place to bring a new cat to the farm. And when I mentioned that fact to Everett, he just threw back his head and laughed. Sparky was as big as a small Collie dog, and he always looked like he had had a serious confrontation with some wild animal in the bush, which he frequented often. Sometimes he would be gone for days, and as soon as Father would say “good riddance,” there Sparky would appear as large as life. That was when I first heard that a cat had nine lives. How anyone figured that out was beyond me. Did someone stop to count them? I did know the barn cats survived many close calls though. Often a cow would kick a cat and it would land several feet away, stand up, shake itself off as if getting rid of the chaff from the hay laying around, and walk off as if nothing had happened. I once asked my older and much wiser sister Audrey what the cats ate. We certainly never fed them. There were several old battered tin plates in the barn that were filled with milk when the milking was done. But to me that was all they ever put in their stomachs. But Audrey said they survived on eating mice. That too, sent chills up my back. I didn’t know whether to root for the cat or the mouse, since I loved animals of every description. So if the cats survived on mice and milk, they sure flourished. I once tried to give them names, but so many of them looked alike that I gave up. Except for Sparky. For the longest time he was the only one in the barn who had different coloured eyes. On hot summer days, one of my favourite places was sitting on the cement platform that held the pump and often a barn cat would wander over, and I would take it on my lap, and my greatest joy was when it snuggled down and started to purr. Never in a hundred years could I do that with Sparky! Some of the barn cats were black and white, and sometimes a grey striped kitten would appear, and occasionally, I would go into the barn and find a new batch of kittens huddled in the hay, and they would be the spitting image of Sparky. Once I found one new kitten that even had two different coloured eyes. I could never figure out how a new kitten could look like old Sparky. By way of explanation, my brother Everett would just say, “old Sparky’s been at it again” whatever that meant.

David Mulholland in Renfrew July 22 for book signing Arnprior-raised author David Mulholland will be in Renfrew July 22, promoting and signing his latest work — Chaudière Falls — A Novel of Dramatized History. On March 7, 1800, Philemon Wright, a farmer from Woburn, Mass., arrives on the north shore of the Ottawa River in Hull Township in Lower Canada. On Sept. 1, 1860, on the south side of the river, in the united province of Canada, Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Albert Edward, lays the cornerstone for Canada’s Parliament Buildings on Barrack Hill in Ottawa. While David Mulholland’s third “novel of dramatized history” brings to life the real events that unfold between those two dates, Wright’s determination to establish a community of farmers, the political scheming that results in Ottawa becoming Canada’s capital, it’s also the story of immigrants struggling for survival in a new world. Among them is Jedediah Jansen, who is 10 years old when his family arrives with Wright’s party. Jed marries, enters the volatile timber business, is overwhelmed by both, and his life spirals out of control. In Bytown, the settlers’ attempts to establish a peaceful community are further exacerbated when the government in York (Toronto) refuses to confer legal status on the settlement. Its inhabitants’ strong resentment to Colonel By’s civil authority gives rise to rampant self-serving politics, religious bigotry and barbaric violence. “When I began researching and writing this story in February 2009, it had not yet dawned on me that, in 2017, we’d be celebrating 150 years of Confederation,” Mulholland says. “Although serendipitous, publication at this time ties in nicely with our country’s sesquicentennial.” Chaudière Falls — it’s not only the water roaring over the cataract that’s causing turbulence! Chaudière Falls — A Novel of Dramatized History was published by Burnstown Publishing. David Mulholland was born in Kingston, Ont., and raised in the Ottawa Valley town of Arnprior. He’s lived in Ottawa since 1970. Mulholland will be at A Sense of Country in Renfrew on July 22 between 2-4 p.m. for a book signing. Mulholland began his writing career as an advertising copywriter in private radio. He went on to work as a researcher, story editor and interviewer for CBC Public Affairs television, a general-assignment reporter and music reviewer for the Ottawa Citizen, a syndicated country-music columnist, a part-time standup comic with Yuk Yuk’s and a speech writer for a number of departments in the federal government.

Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family. ‘MidSummer HerbFest’ is the 22nd annual celebration of growing and using herbs to help develop healthy life-

styles. HerbFest has moved from the Almonte vicinity. “This is our second year of celebrating MidSummer HerbFest at Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens. Our goal is to generate enthusiasm for the roles that herbs play in our lives,” says a Township of McNab/Braeside press release.

Activities will include cook-offs, vendors, displays, demonstrations, music, craft, food kiosks and children’s activities. This event is being presented by the Ottawa Valley Herb Association in partnership with the Township of McNab/Braeside. “We’re holding MidSummer HerbFest at Waba Cottage Museum and

Gardens. This is our south coast park,” says the release. “It is nestled in eight acres of lovely gardens and five museum buildings on the shores of scenic White Lake. First-place league finish for McNab Mavericks fastball team After a 10-2 season in the West Carleton Softball League, the McNab Mavericks bantam fastball team beat the undefeated Fitzroy 1 team in the final Monday night, July 10. It was an intense game, with several swings in momentum, say officials. Ultimately, the Mavericks came out on top, with a final score of 8-6, in what was the most exciting game of the year for the team. “Our two losses in the regular season were against Fitzroy 1, so I was hoping we’d meet again in the final,” said coach Brian Armsden. “I’m extremely proud of our kids. They improved all season long and came through with a huge win when it counted most!”

The McNab Mavericks Bantam Fastball Team finished first this year. From left, in front, are: Reese Mellema, Isaac Burton, Darby McAdam, Curtis Barr and Rett Armsden and back row: Brian Armsden (coach), Jake Rampton, Tanner Kuehl, Ethan McCormick, Jason Liebig, Nathan Beaubien, John Bradley, Connor Ogilvie and Harvey Ogilvie (assistant coach). Missing are Austin Farr, Brian Sheeler and Gerry Liebig (assistant coach).

Kids fish derby a big success The third annual Arnprior Kids Fishing Derby held Canada Day morning was a great success, with a record turnout of 81 kids, plus parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The kids were very hungry and went through 120 hot dogs, donated by Giant Tiger and 10 large pizzas donated by Domino’s. “We were very lucky to have volunteers coming out year after year and without whom this event would not have been the success it was,” said organizer Darren Wood. “I also presented another volunteer, pro angler Big Jim McLaughlin, a plaque from myself and the kids to show our appreciation for his con-

tinued presence since we started this event three ago. He always has a smile and bag full of goodies from Shimano.” Wood said there were only about a dozen fish caught at the event, but it did not matter. “The kids were laughing, playing and seemed to be excited just to be there. In the end we gave out gifts to everyone, plus trophies to our top anglers,” he said. Winners were: Ages 3-7 – First: Savannah O’Connel; second: Annabelle Newson; and third: Steven Petruk. Ages 8-13 – First: Cole Hordichuk; second: Maria Petruk; and third: Chandler Vandyke.

Golf Course “Reciprocal Green Fee”

Last week, the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) hosted its annual Golf Fore Kids tournament at the Oaks of Cobden. Over a hundred golfers participated in the daylong event where golfers and nongolfers alike enjoyed lunch, dinner and prizes. “This year’s tournament was bigger and better than last year,” said RCDSB chair Wendy Hewitt. “It showed us the generosity that runs through Renfrew County and I am pleased to know that the funds raised will help many students who are not able to participate in school activities, events and programs due to financial strain.” Golf Fore Kids was established as a signature fundraiser for the Student Support Fund (SFF). The mission of the SFF is to provide opportunities for RCDSB students in all our schools across the county by providing financial support. As a registered charity, the SSF is managed by a committee of between five and seven members, including a combination of Board staff and

community members. There is a minimum of one elementary and one secondary principal or vice principal, one of which acts as the committee chair. Committee members may serve two (2) year terms and the chair may serve for two consecutive terms. Donations from the public and businesses will be used to provide mini grants to schools who distribute them to students. By providing support to students that would normally face challenges due to financial constraints, the SSF is aimed at enhancing the educational outcomes of each student so that we can ultimately improve the health and well-being of each student. These include, but are not limited to, costs associated with extracurricular activities and trips, sports and music equipment and college and university application fees. “With all funds raised going toward helping more students achieve their full potential, there isn’t a better way to spend a day on a golf course.” concluded Hewitt. To learn more about the SSF, visit www.pass.rcdsb.on.ca.

Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. NMB

PRAYERS

In Memory of

BRADY LORNE MILLS

August 6, 1992 - July 15, 2016 It has been a long, sad year without Brady and his warm dimpled smile, adventurous spirit and kind heart. Despite the sudden loss of this talented young man’s bright future, we go on with our days trying to honour the life he lived - “A huntin’, fishin’, and lovin’ every day..” surrounded by all of the great memories we have of him. Lovingly thought of every day, Mom (Cheryl), Dad (Alan), and Big Brother Tyler. We’d like to thank family, friends, and neighbours for all the help and support on our worst days and throughout the year.

In loving memory of my dear husband September 20, 1923 – July 12, 2016 A lonely tear and the saddest eyes, I have ever seen, you suddenly passed away. You were my love, you were my life. The day you left, my life went to. Now I exist from day to day. It is so sad, to walk this road alone, instead of side by side. You gave to me, through the years, such joy and happiness. You were so kind, loving and gentle, always gave a helping hand. It was the joy you gave me, when you were by my side. You left me such beautiful memories, I will treasure through the years. Now there is only sorrow and tears. You joined the army in 1941. Shortly after you were posted overseas. In 1946 you were posted back to Canada to Camp Borden. In 1952 you were posted to Korea for 1 year. Through the years, you were posted to various locations in Canada including Whitehorse, Y.T. for 3 years. Then came 3 years in Germany. This posting was different. I joined you over there. We travelled when we could. Oh the places that we saw. The Leaning Tower, Vatican, and the Tower of London just to name a few. Your tour was finished and we were home again. There were more postings in Canada. Then you left the military. You served your country well. Then came civilian life. They said it is too hard to adjust. But as you went to work each day, you adjusted well. You retired in 1988. We travelled some. Oh how we enjoyed our quiet time. You would get out our picture album, down memory lane we’d go. As you turned the pages, laughter would ring out. It seemed like we were there again. When I get out our album, as I turn the pages, there is no laughter. It’s not the same. With a heavy heart I close the book. I’ll try another day. When my time has come at last, in your footsteps I will walk. I know when I’ve reached my journey’s end, I will see you standing there. With a joyful cry, together again, you knew I’d follow you. Oh how I miss you, Love you forever Olga

Vacationing in Canada with Fido Ian Stupp

Pet Talk

Banff, Calgary, Edmonton, Lake Louise, Montréal, Mont Tremblant, Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler all offer pet friendly hotels, dog parks and attractions, dog restaurants, pet services such as grooming and veterinarian care and dog events. Before you leave make sure your dog an ID tag and is microchipped. The identification should include your pet’s name, address and two phone numbers where you can be reached. Try to pack enough food to last your pet through the entire vacation. While vacation may mean new cuisines for you, new foods can leave your dog with diarrhea or an even more serious condition like pancreatitis, a sudden inflammation of the pancreas caused by eating fatty foods like table scraps. If it’s not possible to bring that much kibble, find a pet store at your destination that carries your dog’s typical fare. For dogs with chronic health problems, pack enough medication and put it in two different places just in case one gets lost and bring a copy of your dog’s prescriptions and medical records just in case you lose both packages of medication or require a vet visit. Your dog may never leave your side at home, but may be unpredictable in a foreign environment, like a rest stop. Never let your dog off a restraint outdoors while travelling. A dog off leash is at risk for getting injured or lost. No dog is immune to temptation or fear. A passing

biker or the backfiring of a car engine can send it running. Invest in a snug collar that won’t slip over its head. It’s never safe to leave a travelling dog alone in a car. This is especially important during the summer when car temperatures can become fatal within minutes even if it’s overcast and the windows are open. If air travel is in your plans, remember big dogs on planes must ride underneath the cabin. Your dog should ride with you in the cabin or it should stay home, unless you’re going away for far too long to consider that option. Try to feed your dog at least six hours before strapping it into its seatbelt. Canine stomachs tend to respond poorly to the bumps and jolts of cars and planes. Nausea and vomiting can result from feeding time being too close to departure time. At your destination, whether it’s a dogfriendly hotel or a dog-friendly relative who will be housing you during your vacation, it’s important that your pet leave a good impression. Don’t allow your dog to chew the furniture or to sniff other guests. Before you arrive at you hotel, review animal policies or talk to your hosts about their expectations regarding your dog. Ensure your pet’s emotional ease by bringing along something from home that smells familiar, like a favourite toy, dog bed or a piece of your clothing etc. A dog that feels safe and secure will most likely to be an excellent travel companion, vacationing with your four legged family member can be really rewarding for a pet lover.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Barsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
