The dragons are set to make a return to Arnprior’s waters this Saturday, July 23 for a second year of races. The 2,000-year-old Chinese
tradition of dragon boat racing is said to be the fastest growing water sport in North America. Festival organizers Glenn Arthur and Rick Gwalchmai noted there are 15 teams confirmed for Arnprior’s Community Dragon Boat Festival, the event’s second year.

The inaugural festival drew a crowd in Arnprior last year to the races on Madawaska River. Families come from as far as Corning, N.Y. and Cambridge, Ontario. This year, the races are to begin at 9 a.m. and will likely finish around 3 p.m. See DRAGON Page 7
The driver who killed a young Arnprior woman as she was walking home last December has been sentenced to eight years in prison. In a Guelph courtroom Thursday, Curtis Henri pleaded guilty in the death of Grace Glofcheskie, a 24-year-old U of G graduate who was fatally injured as she was walking home in the early morning hours by a vehicle being pursued by police. Gerard Glofcheskie of Arnprior tried to speak positively following the sentencing of his daughter’s killer on Thursday. “Our focus had always been on
trying to find the good in a difficult situation,” he said. On Dec. 13, 2015, Grace Glofcheskie was hit by an out-of-control SUV that mounted the curb and sidewalk and severed a hydro pole. The driver of that vehicle, later identified as 21-year-old Curtis Henri, pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the case. The most significant of these was that he “did by criminal negligence cause the death of Grace Glofcheskie by operating a motor vehicle at an excessive rate of speed while being pursued by police on December 13, 2015.” See COURT Page 4

MADAWASKA STREET CLOSURE
McNab-Braeside residents have 10 more days to fill out a survey that help shape the township’s efforts in promoting economic and population growth within its borders. The Economic Development Survey is available online and at the municipal office. The response from residents and anyone else who feels they have a stake in the township’s growth will help guide the fledgling McNabBraeside economic development committee, and council, as it works on strategies and priorities. The preamble to the survey notes that the committee is seeking to ensure the township is heading in the right direction when it comes to economic development. Some people suggest the committee should encourage larger industry and more major subdivisions, while others recommend iy focus on development in such areas as tourism and small home-based service businesses.
Please be advised that due to construction along Madawaska Street there will be below traffic disruptions will take place from July 18th – August 8th approximately. Please follow all traffic control and detour signage throughout this area. Madawaska will be closed to traffic, except emergency vehicles from Daniel Street to Bell Street. Traffic will be detoured along Elgin Street as per the above map. Lumbertown would have had to provide for 19 parking spaces; rather it will pay the town $7,600. John Street paid the town $8,000 in lieu of 20 spaces. Callahan residents oppose plan for more townhomes Derek Dunn
derek.dunn@metroland.com
Arnprior council chambers were packed during the July 11 public meeting about a proposal for more townhomes in Callahan Estates. Developer Campanale Homes is asking the municipal government to allow for a new plan that would increase number of units, putting more pressure on water and sewage infrastructure, along with traffic and parking. Currently the plan is for phase two of the neighbourhood to have 51 per cent single detached homes, 24 per cent townhomes, and 25 per cent bungalow townhomes for a total of 314 units. The company wants “densification” to increase with 24 per cent singles, 44 per cent townhomes, and 32 per cent bungalow townhomes for a total of 385 units. (The bungalows are closer to singles than townhomes, the company said.) Tony and Vince Campanale, in business for more than 30 years, told council they’ve paid for various consultants, surveys and studies going back to last July before arriving at this new request. They argued the aging population across Ontario – which is even higher in Arnprior – is forcing market changes from large family homes to smaller, less expensive empty nests. Older people are looking for quiet, small communities with options for townhomes or small attached-bungalows. Younger people leave the area to buy near their workplace. Those who stay have less income, and so are looking for a townhome as their first purchase. It was mentioned that other developers in Arnprior also likely have trouble selling larger homes, though all are doing their best to sell high-profit single detacheds. At one point they said townhomes have fewer occupants, meaning fewer cars and less traffic. Those in public chairs scoffed at the claim, and appeared anxious to speak from their side as former Campanale customers living in Callahan Estates. A traffic study shows the increase won’t cause undue stress on area roadways, the Campanales said. On the parking side, they haven’t received any complaints and will provide spaces for at least three cars. “No resident has to park on the street,” Vince said, again to bitter chuckles. No townhomes would face single detached homes, only “adult bungalows” (meaning bungalow townhomes). Tony summarized by stressing the importance of selling the types of homes the market is demanding. Without that, no one wins. “If we can’t sell homes, we won’t be staying in Arnprior,” he said.
Council will make a decision during its Of the half dozen or so who spoke to it is “almost offensive” to imply they make for bad neighbours. Aug. 22 meeting. council, all live in the area and oppose to the request. They argued that among the reasons they opted to move into the area was the Did you take a Payday Loan from The Cash Store or Instaloans large number of singles due to be built. Now in Ontario on or after September 1, 2011? the concern is that their property values will drop with more less-expensive townhomes. Others worry that many of the townhomes Collect money owed to you from class will be rentals, just as Campanale has done action settlements totaling more than in the past. He also said the town’s responsibility is to 1-866-840-2631 (toll-free) look at the long-term interests; smaller is in demand now, but when the baby boomers are gone in a few decades, demands will change. The town needs to have larger homes available for tomorrow’s families, he indicated. “I just think 76 per cent townhomes is not the proper mix,” Reid said. “A townhome for your first, yes, but your next move is not into adult. We need to provide for that next move too.” He noted that Kemptville and other comparable towns have fewer townhomes than Arnprior; that this community is perhaps the most developer friendly in the region. At the time of the incident, Henri had been fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle after failing to stop at a RIDE program in downtown Guelph. After rolling the SUV on Woolwich Street, he left the scene uninjured, just before police arrived. He was arrested two days later in a stolen car at a north-end motel room.
The other charges to which he pleaded guilty include break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, flight from police, breach of probation, possession of a stolen vehicle, and a second count of motor vehicle theft. Henri was sentenced to eight years in prison in addition to time already served in custody for the charge of criminal negligence causing death. He received lesser sentences

for the other charges, all to be served concurrently. Glofcheskie’s father, speaking outside of the Wyndham Street courtroom, declined to comment on the sentence, focusing instead on his daughter’s legacy. “Grace loved and was loved,” said Gerard Glofcheskie. He was wearing a button with his daughter’s face on it and a Guelph Gryphon pin on his lapel, and was surrounded by family holding pictures of Grace from various stages of her life. “The loss to her family was like losing an arm,” he said. “It does not get better.” But as a person who has lost an arm learns to live without that limb, so his family must learn to live without Grace, he said. He spoke of how important his daughter’s education at the University of Guelph – where she completed her undergraduate and master’s degrees and captained the golf team – was to her. “The university meant everything to her,” he said, drawing attention to a memorial fund in her name at the U of G that will “continue her legacy.” He said he will miss hearing her loud and boisterous laugh, adding “when Grace entered a room, she brought light into that room.” His sentiments echoed those in the numerous victim impact statements delivered during the earlier court proceedings. “Every memory I have with Grace is a positive one,” said friend Meghan Wing, lamenting, “we won’t get to make any more of these memories.” Holding a framed graduation photo of herself and Grace, fellow U of G student Dorelle Hinton said of her, “Grace was the friend I could always count on for her support.” A total of 18 statements were submitted by family and friends, who remarked on Grace’s numerous accomplishments and positive qualities and spoke of the pain of loss. “I lost my big sister, my best friend,” said Grace’s sister, Rachel. “They tell you it gets better, but that’s a lie.” Henri sat facing straight ahead throughout the proceedings, his expression betraying no emotion. Given the chance to speak, just before the judge delivered his sentence, Henri took the opportunity to say he was sorry for what he had done. He spoke in a composed manner in a voice barely audible. In his sentencing, Justice Michael Epstein commented on the contrast between the victim and the accused. “It is abundantly clear that Grace come from a close and loving family,” he said. “She is by all accounts a remarkable person who had unlimited potential.” Summing up a description provided by Henri’s counsel – who told of a history of neglect, including time spent in and out of foster homes – Epstein said Henri had a comparatively disadvantaged background. “He’s a young man who in stark contrast to Grace grew up in horrific conditions without a supporting family,” he said. Henri is someone who “during the most important developmental stages of his life was subject to unspeakable neglect,” he said. But he also suggested that Henri has failed to try to change his life.
GRACE GLOFCHESKIE “He has not taken responsibility; he has not made positive steps in his life toward changing things for the better,” said Epstein. In seeking the eight-year sentence, Crown attorney Michael Carnegie noted Henri’s 37 prior convictions – 27 as a young offender and 10 as an adult. He referenced the vehicle thefts for which Henri was charged as a “spree,” and also referred to prior car thefts and robberies. “That is a pattern or cycle of behavior that Mr. Henri had found himself in,” Carnegie said. He called the sentence for the criminal negligence charge “significant” for a 21-yearold, but noted that alcohol had not been a factor, as is often the case with such charges. “Intentional choices are being made that are not impacted by the consumption of substances,” said Carnegie. He described the danger to police as Henri failed to stop at the RIDE program and the excessive speed at which he travelled through the downtown – 128 km/h in a 50-km/h zone. “Mr. Henri demonstrated a callous and alarming indifference to the safety of any person occupying the roads on that morning in downtown Guelph,” he said. “His deliberate choices that evening put him in a position where Grace or somebody else could have been his victim.” He argued that the community is safer with Henri in custody. Both the Crown and the defense counsel agreed on the length of the sentence, and the judge saw no reason to disagree with them. But he also noted for the benefit of the family in the courtroom that the sentence should not be taken as a reflection of their loss. There is sometimes a feeling among that “somehow the sentence that is imposed reflects the value of the person lost. That’s not the case at all,” Epstein said. He went on to give his sentence, telling Henri that if he does not take steps to make change he has no viable future. Just before delivering the sentence, he told the courtroom, “my condolences to all those affected by this man’s actions.”
Closure of Madawaska Street changes hospital access John Carter
john.carter@metroland.com
The closure of two blocks of Madawaska Street in downtown Arnprior has necessitated special arrangements to ensure paramedics and citizens have access to the area’s hospital. The town and contractor have determined Madawaska between Bell and Daniel streets needs to be closed for about three weeks to ensure safety and efficiency of the downtown revitalization-related work. The closure is also affecting access to the library, museum, marina and Robert Simpson Park, which is hosting a Dragonboat Festival this Saturday, July 23. Originally it was thought that one lane could be keep open during construction, but the route was completely blocked off to traffic starting Monday, July 18. It is anticipated that the work on the two blocks will have progressed sufficiently by Aug. 8 to allow the contractor to open at least one lane. Renfrew County manager of infrastructure Michael Pinet said the county, town and contractor are working with local paramedics to ensure they have quick access to the hospital during the road closure. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure they can get through,” he said. “It certainly has its challenges.” He said it is likely that a route allowing ambuDEREK DUNN/METROLAND lances to “zig-zag” through the library and ScoWork along Madawaska and John tiabank parking lots will allow them swift access streets makes it tricky to access to the hospital. He explained that the care and complexity the hospital, museum and library.
needed to replace aging infrastructure led to the decision to close Madawaska Street. “We’ll reopen it as soon as we can,” he said. Arnprior marketing and economic development officer Lindsay Wilson said the closure is wise in case workers run into more granite, as they have near Scotia Bank. As well, work on the water line along the sidewalk means it would be tricky to safely control even one lane of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area and give the workers enough room, she added. AUGUST OPENING
“Hopefully it will be opened to two lanes or at least one (by Aug. 8),” she said. She encouraged residents accessing the hospital for non-emergency reasons to use Elgin, Harriet and Ottawa streets. Motorists coming into town from the east to access the hospital, marina or Robert Simpson Park should use White Lake Road instead of coming in on Madawaska Boulevard, she advised. People attending the Dragonboat Festival July 23 should also take that route. Wilson has sent out revised directions to the participating teams. Pinet noted that the extra detour signage in the area includes the blue hospital signs. While most Arnprior residents have figured out by now how to avoid the construction, outof-towners attempting to use the hospital may need help. People from Pakenham, Galetta, Fitzroy and surrounding area, as well as seasonal visitors, could become confused when trying
to access the hospital without proper signage, he said. While Madawaska Street is likely to be reopened around Aug. 8, the slowdowns will continue until at least Aug. 26. The town asks drivers to follow traffic control and detour signage throughout the area. After Aug. 8, it’s likely westbound traffic on Madawaska Street will be reduced to one lane from the Madawaska Bridge to Bell Street and eastbound traffic will be detoured along Elgin to Daniel Street. Despite the disruptions, all downtown businesses remain open. LIBRARY PARKING
Parking for the Arnprior Public Library and Arnprior and District Museum will be rather difficult in the next three weeks with Madawaska Street closed. “The best advice is to walk and if you need to drive, park at the municipal lot (behind Shoppers),” suggested a library spokesperson. The library parking lot will be limited to the John Street access, which is too narrow to have vehicles coming in and leaving at the same time. As well, a part of the parking area is likely to be roped off to allow ambulances to get through to the hospital in case of an emergency. Town and library officials are asking patrons to be patient during the construction period. Once Madawaska is partially reopened, the municipal parking lot, museum and library will have access back from the street.

A 23-year-old man from a well-known Galetta family has been identified as the driver killed when his car rolled over several times near MacLaren’s Landing July 15. Friends confirmed that Brady Lorne Mills, the son of the owners of Al’s Corner Store in Galetta, was the man killed in the crash near the corner of Woodkilton and Galetta Side roads just before 10 a.m. last Friday. Mills, a graduate of Arnprior District High School, is being mourned by family and a large number of friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and earned a designation as a master gunsmith, a trade he practiced out of Al’s Corner Store. His obituary notes he “loved the rural life and all it brought his way. His passion for guns and innate creativity allowed him to become accomplished in his trade at a young age.” It goes on to say he was “always smiling and full of life, making people laugh with his quick wit. “He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.” Brady was the son of Alan and Cheryl Mills and brother of Tyler. He is also survived by his grandmothers Lorraine Reed and Ina Mills of Arn-
prior and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The Pilon Family Funeral Home in Arnprior is looking after funeral arrangements. Visitations are scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday (July 21) from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Friday 9:30-11 a.m. The service will be held at 11 a.m. in the Pilon Family Chapel. In memory of Brady, the family is suggesting donations to the Arnprior Fish and Game Club, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or the Alzheimer Society of Ontario. Ottawa Police, Ottawa Fire Services and Ottawa Paramedics received the 911 call around 9:47 a.m. July 15. Mills’ vehicle had gone off the road and rolled over several times before coming to rest in a cornfield near the Woodkilton-Galetta Side road intersection. Early reports indicated someone was either trapped or had been ejected from the car. However, the first firefighter on the scene confirmed extrication was not needed as nobody was located inside the vehicle. The driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle, was found with no vital signs. Because of reports there had been more than one person in the vehicle, firefighters and police undertook a complete search of the area, sweeping it twice. But no one else was found.
As of 11:22 a.m. on the day in question, , the Ottawa Police confirmed with a tweet on social media that “a male involved in the serious collision on Galetta Side Road has succumbed to his injuries.” Galetta Side Road was closed to traffic between Woodkilton and Torbolton roads to allow for the police investigation. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to assist with traffic control, as the scene became quite busy. In its release, Ottawa Fire Services advise residents to remember the following points. “Vehicles not involved in a collision are to yield right for emergency vehicles trying to access the scenes and the persons requiring assistance. “If you are the first person at a motor vehicle incident, please approach the scene only if it is safe to do so. It is advisable to remain in your vehicle on fast moving highways and roadways as passing motorists may not see you if you exit your vehicle. “Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so. Remember, you are our eyes and ears to the emergency. “Our dispatch staff will ask questions to help best locate the caller and assess the conditions surrounding the emergency. EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCESS TO YOUR LANEWAY LIMITED ACCESS MAY AFFECT EMERGENCY RESPONSE
It is important that a fire truck or ambulance be able to use your laneway when responding to an emergency call at your house or cottage. The owner of a building in the Township of McNab/Braeside is responsible for the access to the building from the traveled portion of the road to the building. An access that is not suitable for a large pumper truck or ambulance may affect the effectiveness of emergency personnel responding to an emergency call at that location. Laneways should be snowplowed and cleared of limbs or trees to a minimum width of 15 feet with a clearance of 15 feet overhead. Any turns or corners must be wide enough to allow the trucks to drive directly to the residence. REMEMBER - Emergency Services vehicles cannot protect or help you if they can’t get to you!!

Dragon boat festival will be set up at Robert Simpson Park Continued from front
The race course is 500 metres long and watchers can take in the proceedings from pretty much anywhere along the waterfront from the marina to Robert Simpson Park. “Each team are guaranteed three races each,” explained Arthur. “There are three divisions from competitive, community and female.” Robert Simpson Park is set to be a buzz of activity as the teams will be stationed there and the public is welcome to come down and join the fun. At noon, there will be a Breast Cup challenge with breast cancer survivors and a flower ceremony will follow. Local youth paddlers are also scheduled to have a fun race during the day, possibly against the Boy and Girls Club of Ottawa, but that is not official yet. Typically, a dragon boat has 20 paddlers and a steersperson and a drummer – all in one boat. Members of the Arnprior Dragon Boat Club were at the marina on July 14, preparing for the big event. They included some newbies involved in their first season of dragon boating. “We are the rookies,” said Martin Shea of Arnprior. “We had friends paddling and (it) seemed fun and interesting and something to do together as a couple.”
“Dragon boats are totally different from canoe paddling,” said Martin’s wife Cheryl. “It’s fun and a challenge.” Nancy Roach of White Lake is also in her first season. “I’m in love with it,” she said. “I wish I had started 10 years ago.” Roach saw an advertisement in the newspaper publicizing the club’s search for paddlers. What sold her on trying out was there was no prerequisites or no age limit. “It’s exciting and great exercise and not boring,” said Roach. “I have this feeling of accomplishment and being on the water was relaxing.” Anne Cruickshank works at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and joined the hospital team for the festival. It was then she got the dragon boat bug. “(The hospital team) practiced and it didn’t go too well,” she laughed. “It was also a lot of fun. It’s been good exercise, I like the teamwork and there’s been a good mix of people. We also know what we did wrong (last year).” Betty O’Shaughnessy is the drummer for the local boat and some of the paddlers have come to call her ‘BruSCOTT CAMPBELL/METROLAND tal Betty’. But it’s all in good fun, as These paddlers are members of the Arnprior Dragon Boat Club. Led by Betty O’Shaughnessy (right side O’Shaughnessy said that the team is of the photo) or ‘Brutal Betty’ as the group has taken to calling her, they speed up the Madawaska by made up of a good group of people. the boat launch. They do their workouts regularly out of the marina.
NOT ENOUGH HOMES FOR CATS AND DOGS
340 March Rd. Suite 101, Kanata, ON K2K 2E4 This cat should have been spayed. Spaying/Neutering prevents the births of cats and dogs for whom no homes can be found. In Canada, tens of thousands of cats and dogs are put to death annually in pounds and shelters because there are not enough homes for them. And how many more die on the streets from sickness, injury and starvation?

Connected to your community
A salute to new attractions S everal major Upper Ottawa Valley summer festivals have come and gone. There was the Lumber Baron Festival in Renfrew with its salute to the lumberjacks of old, including the legendary Big Joe Muffaraw. Those days will be kept alive by the Loggers Memory Project at Red Pine Bay. Remember the Salutes to the Valley that attracted such stars and Tommy Hunter and Carroll Baker to Arnprior’s Robert Simpson Park. Then there were the dance halls that reverberated to tapping toes and snapping fingers as Mac Beattie and other popular fiddlers entertained residents and tourists alike. Ah, those were the days. But don’t waste time lamenting the past. While those old-fashioned festivals and dance halls have come and gone, there are many new weird and wonderful summer attractions that have cropped up recently to keep people engaged and in many cases enlightened. For instance, the Midsummer Herbfest is relocating to our shores. The popular celebration of healthy living and the power of herbs is being held on the shores of White Lake at the Waba Cottage Museum on July 31. The marvelous gardens are an ideal site for a herb love-in. Arnprior’s newest summer festival is taking advantage of the growing popularity of dragon boating. Come down to Robert Simpson Park this Saturday, July 23, and find why it’s such an attractive exercise.
Speaking of exercise, the Bonnechere River Watershed Project has dramatically expanded its number of paddles this summer as it pays homage to our wonderful rivers (come on Ottawa, give the Ottawa River its much deserved heritage designation). Next up is this Saturday’s new paddle from Portage-du-Fort to the Horton boat launch Just outside Horton, Avalon Ranch is hosting a two-day canine watersports competition this weekend. It’s another relatively new sport that is growing by leaps and bounds (especially by the dogs who appear to love the challenge). Another new endeavor this summer is Walk the Opeongo Line. Not content with just making the pilgrimage to St. Ann’s in Cormac on the long weekend, a band of intrepid hikers is walking there from Renfrew. There are plenty of other captivating events around the area this summer from horse shows on Scheel Drive and remote-controlled radio airplane fly-ins at Vydon Acres to motocross races on Kennelly Mountain and water skiing fun at Burnstown Beach. And Calabogie Peaks is starting its own musical tradition taking advantage of its natural amphitheatre with its Mountain Man and Bluesfest/Ribfest festivals. Lumber Baron and Salute to the Valley may have become distant memories, but there are other attractions to keep everyone occupied this summer. So get out there and enjoy them.
‘Cowboy’ off roaders should keep off Arnprior town streets To the Editor: I never thought I would ever say this, but I agree with Lynn Grinstead on not allowing off road vehicles on town streets. As it is the riders of these machines rip through the streets with little concern for speed limits or traffic laws. I do agree there are few complaints but suspect that is because there is little point in
doing so. The riders are anonymous with the gear they wear and the machines themselves reveal little on who they belong to. Who do you complain to and what can you say? Stop signs and speed limits do not exist to the riders. When was the last time you saw a snow machine or ATV being driven slowly and quietly? Comparing the trundle of a train going on a predictable track through town to the cow-

boys who ride these devices is silly at best. I have lived alongside a route taken in winter by snow machines and they rip by in the middle of the night and always at full revs or noise. Not sure where the mayor lived to not mind this. It seems that ever since the old CP tracks were discussed as a trail, the owners of the machines felt the trail was to be for their exclusive use. In pointing out the track space was bought with taxpayer dollars and should, therefore, be equally and safely accessible to all should be easily apparent but not so to the mechanized crowd. Comparing Calabogie to Arnprior is insulting to both communities as both have different living environments. Then again if council want to turn the

As an alternative, if the track trail is to be used by all as it should be, then keep the access to the track line through town. If riders have to go into town, provide a parking area and – god forbid – have them walk a block or two. Strange sounds arise from marshes Michael Runtz
Praise & Worship
Nature’s Way
Nature provides stimulation for all of our senses. Twinflower, Trailing Arbutus and other wildflowers delight our nose. Scarlet Tanagers, American Goldfinches and other songbirds please our eye. And an astounding diversity of sound seduces our ear. In recent days, the at-times insufferable heat has enticed Cicada nymphs to abandon their subterranean haunts and climb up trees where as adults their ear-piercing whine fills the air. Soon a symphony of Field Crickets, Katydids and their relatives will serenade the night. And although much of summer’s bird sounds is diminishing rapidly, a few species including American Robins still greet the dawn with song. The songs of most songbirds are melodious and pleasing to the ear. The same, however, cannot be said for the vocalizations produced by much larger birds such as Great Blue Herons and Common Ravens. But to be fair to those species, their grunts, croaks and screams, unlike the pleasing offerings of songbirds, are not designed to impress potential mates. While the voices of herons and ravens are indeed harsh and rather unpleasant, even stranger sounds arise from cattail marshes. Marshes are extremely rich habitats that harbour a great number of fascinating animals. The best way to visit a marsh is by canoe (or, reportedly, a kayak, for I have never been in one). A canoe allows you to silently float by a marsh’s edge, which is the most dynamic part of the habitat.

The long toes of this Sora allow it to walk across floating vegetation. But don’t be surprised that you will hear much more than you will see, for many of its fascinating inhabitants are very elusive. Of all birds living in marshes, rails are the most unusual. Locally, there are four species: Sora, Virginia Rail, American Coot and Common Gallinule. Coots are the least common, and are the only rails to possess toes with large flap-like lobes. The lobes allow coots to move through submerged vegetation by opening on the backstroke to provide a paddle-like surface and closing on the return stroke to slide through the vegetation. Other rails have extremely elongated toes for walking on cattail mats and floating vegetation. Rails’ bodies are compressed from side to side, a shape that allows them to walk between thick cattails. Rails are also noteworthy for their odd sounds. Soras utter shrill notes and a high-pitched whinny.
Virginia Rails, the most common species locally, produce grunts that start fast and slow down, not unlike a giant coin rolling on its edge until it stops. An odd “kid-ik, kid-ik, kid-ik” is also in their vocabulary. Common Gallinules make even stranger, cackling sounds described by the famed American ornithologist William Brewster as “so varied and complex that it seems hopeless to attempt a full description of them. Speaking generally, the notes were all loud, harsh and discordant, and nearly all curiously henlike.” If you are lucky, you will see a rail make a brief appearance at the edge of a marsh. More likely, however, you will hear its odd vocalizations arise from somewhere behind deep inside the cattails. To the uninitiated, those bizarre sounds undoubtedly evoke an even stranger image of what their maker looks like! The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.
‘Thin as a rail’ has real meaning for this Virginia Rail, for its laterally compressed body allows it to walk between thick stands of cattails.

Couple praised for quick action when Arnprior home catches fire The homeowners of a Charles Street home that caught on fire last week knew just what to do. And it helped their neighbour is a former Arnprior firefighter. The fire was likely related to a lightning strike. Arnprior fire chief John Okum credits the “swift and smart actions of the homeowners, who immediately evacuated the home and went to a neighbour’s and made the 911 telephone call to report the fire” for minimizing the damage. The volunteer fire department received the call at about 10:15 p.m.
July 14. Upon arrival, fire officials were met by the occupants of the home who had safely evacuated and waited for firefighters to arrive. The fire department discovered an electrical fire that originated in the main floor electrical panel. The fire had spread to the interior wall but was quickly extinguished. The neighbor had used a portable fire extinguisher to help control the flames until the fire department arrived to finish the job. The fire was under control within 45 minutes and fire damage was contained to a single room. How-
ever, there was smoke damage throughout the home. The two senior occupants have been displaced until repairs can be made to the home. The couple’s immediate needs have been met by very caring family members and their insurance company, reports Okum. Arnprior fire officials have investigated the cause and concluded that a surge occurred in the electrical distribution system, most likely due to a lightning strike. The fire chief also praised the homeowners for having working smoke alarms.

Ontario is building almost 500 electric vehicle charging stations at over 250 locations, including three in Arnprior. In a news release last week, the province announced the new stations will be in place by March 17, 2017. The Arnprior sites will be at the Tim Hortons restaurant on Madawaska Boulevard, the McDonald’s restaurant on Baskin Drive and the Metro grocery store at the Arnprior Shopping Centre. The approval for the
charging stations comes after Arnprior council, on a split vote this spring, decided against allowing the province to locate one on municipal property. Other new stations will be located in Carleton Place and Pembroke. The province announced it is working with 24 public and private-sector partners to create the network of public charging electric vehicle stations in cities, along highways, at workplaces and at various public places across Ontario. This includes over 200 Level 3 and nearly
300 Level 2 charging stations. The Arnprior Metro and McDonald’s will be level 3 stations and the Tim Hortons one a level 2. The province says the “convenient locations” across the province will help reduce greenhouse gas pollution and fight climate change. The cost to create the stations will be $20 million. The investment under Ontario’s Green Investment Fund will be worth it as it will help address “range anxiety,” a common concern of consumers regarding the
distance electric vehicles can travel compared to traditional vehicles, says the governmnet. “Building a more robust network of public chargers across Ontario allows electric vehicle owners to plan longer trips knowing that charging stations are as readily available as gas stations. With the new network of stations, electric vehicle drivers will be able to travel confidently from Windsor to Ottawa or from Toronto to North Bay and within and around major urban centres.”

Local Liberals celebrate How to make students love math election success with pot-luck The Renfrew-NipissingPembroke Federal Liberal Association is holding what it anticipates will be an annual Arnprior potluck event this Sunday, July 24. The gathering is being touted as “the first of a series of fantastic Team Trudeau events in RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke during the summer of 2016.”
The pot-luck will celebrate “the amazing members, volunteers, donors, and voters who helped elect Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our new Liberal government last October and who made such a difference in our local riding,” says constituency association communications co-ordinator Oliver Jacob. He notes the Liberal
share of the vote in the riding in 2015 nearly tripled. “I’m increasingly sure that with our amazing constituents in RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke, we will be even more successful in 2019,” he added. There is more information available at the association website at www. renfrewnipissingpembroke. liberal.ca.
How do you get elementary students to love math? That’s the goal of Renfrew County public elementary teachers who are back in school this week. During a three-day workshop, teachers of Grades 1-6 will explore a problemsolving approach and ways to provide differentiated learning and assessment to meet the diverse needs of all students. They’ll look at how to engage students with culturally relevant instruction through a
variety of classroom exercises and resources. Participants are attending the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Summer Academy. Teachers across the province have registered to take part in more than 80 dynamic, resource-rich courses in July and August. The three-day courses are part of a broad range of professional learning opportunities offered by ETFO in partnership with its locals. Funding for additional
courses with a special focus on Kindergarten, mathematics and technology was provided this year by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Courses are planned and taught by ETFO members and designed to provide teachers with practical skills and resources to use in their classrooms. This area’s ‘Summer Academy’ is being held Tuesday through Thursday (July 1921) and will be at the Sands on Golden Lake Inn and Resort.

CHIEF MIKE NOLAN RENFREW COUNTY PARAMEDIC
Renfrew County Paramedic deputy chief Brian Leahey operates the unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) during a fire in the Perth/Smiths Falls area on July 13.
Renfrew paramedic drone helps at massive Lanark County fire Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
New technology in Renfrew County has helped tame an often-familiar foe at this time of year: a grassfire. On July 13 a grass and brush fire ripped down the CP Rail lines from Glen Tay to Tay Valley Township, scorching about 20 kilometres of grass and brush along the route. Fifty-four 9-1-1 calls came into the Smiths Falls Fire Department, the first at 2:30 p.m. and the fire was considered under control at 6:30 p.m. Multiple Lanark County fire departments and other emergency services were called in to assist on the fire that stretched down highways 7 and 43, including the Renfrew County Paramedic Unmanned Aerial Vehicle team (UAV-drone). Chief paramedic and director of emergency services for Renfrew County Mike Nolan explained the Lanark County Unified Command Team asked them to bring in the drone to assist with the situation. “We did hot spot analysis, to see if essentially the fire was out and to calculate the area that was burned, said Nolan. “We were able to give live real time images to the OPP, rail authorities and fire services. The remote access team of deputy chief Brian Leahey, UAV (drone) operator, paramedics Steve Osipenko, Matt Lasek and Nolan were on scene for two-and-a -half hours. “We were able to tell them the extent of the
burn area as well as provide assurance that there were no hot spots or risk, explained Nolan. The UAV team, in partnership with InDro Robitics from British Columbia, has been running in Renfrew County for two years and Nolan says they consider themselves a regional resource. Drummond/North Elmsley, Tay Valley Fire Rescue fire chief Greg Saunders said this was the first time their department had used the drone. “I haven’t had a chance to look at the footage, Saunders told the Perth Courier said as he held up a USB drive with images from the drone. “It’s new technology Saunders said he knew Renfrew had the technology, but “never even thought about using it, until Ed McPherson, EMS chief of the Lanark County Paramedic Service, mentioned it. “We talked to them, they offered it at no cost to come down and try it out, he said. Nolan says they were grateful of the extra resource. “Lanark County Unified Command expressed their appreciation for our support and the value of the UAV in support of their efforts. The UAV was also recently used after the landslide in Horton earlier this year. Nolan says they are operational with it once a month. -with files from Laurie Weir

Protect the Arctic, don’t waste time on UN peacekeeping missions: MP Participants in an Arnprior meeting to get local input into the federal government’s review of defence policy felt Canada should be doing more to protect its Arctic territory and sending troops on United Nations peacekeeping missions is a waste of time. Those were two of conclusions reached by Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, who hosted the forum July 15 at the Arnprior Legion. Veterans ranging from the Second World War through Afghanistan campaign together with peacekeepers who served in a number of regions throughout the world participated. Also in attendance were representatives from the education and commercial Internet technology sector. “Participants felt the overarching goal and objective of the Canadian Armed Forces
should be the protection on Canadians within our borders, while upholding our NATO and NORAD commitments,” said Gallant. “They see Arctic Defence as a gaping hole in our national security.” The requirement for more personnel, equipment and training for both regular troops and the Reserves was strongly urged, she said. “Veterans with experience in peacekeeping expressed their views that deploying CAF to UN peacekeeping missions is a waste of time. “When looking back at the current status of place CAF Peacekeepers served decades later, nothing has changed. Without the ability to order reinforcements as in Rwanda, even though a Canadian held the Top Command in theatre, there is nothing in our national interest to do so. Our legacy on peacekeeping is a corps of broken soldiers,” said Gallant.
SUBMITTED
Arnprior Legion executive members Harry Hereford, Mel Porter, Brian Kilby, Chris Walsh, Doug Clapham and Yvon Oullett are among those participating in Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant’s Defence Review Forum in Arnprior. “In regards to Canadian security, attendees agree that the future of Canada’s defence policy must recognize the growing importance and prominence cyber defence will play. More comprehensive background checks at the recruitment level to screen out people with pre-
existing anxiety issues to decrease the rate of PTSD was recommended. Furthermore, they believe Canada’s security agencies must be given access to the data they need without having the Charter thwarting their ability to keep our citizens safe, Gallant said.

The RCAF Wing in Renfrew is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, July 28 to discuss how government is treating members of the military. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is the invited guest at the session, which will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wing. Gallant has been a strong critic of some recent moves by the new federal Liberal government regarding the military, going as far as suggesting some of the decisions are putting soldiers’ lives at risk. However, Gallant and the previous Conservative government have also came under fire for poor treatment of servicemen, especially those dealing with post traumatic distress syndrome. RCAF Wing president Joan Price said public questions and comments will be welcome at the meeting. Gallant recently hosted a meeting at the Arnprior Legion to get input from invited guests on the federal government’s review of defense policies. It resulted in a lively discussion on the purpose and future of the Canadian Armed Forces, public safety and cybersecurity, she said. CONSTITUENCY CLINICS

Waba Cottage Museum to host Midsummer Herbfest July 31 Staff
After wowing those attending the McNab Days Scottish Festival last month, the Waba Cottage Museum grounds in White Lake with host the Midsummer Herbfest Sunday, July 31. The Herbfest, which used to be held annually at the Herb Garden near Almonte, has moved to McNab-Braeside this summer. The long-running celebration of healthy living will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the scenic lake-side museum grounds on the outskirts of the Village of White Lake. Founded by the Ottawa Valley Herb Association in 1994, Herbfest quickly became a popular festival for gardeners, nature lovers, environmentalists, artisans, foodies and families. It celebrated its 20th anniversary and final year at the Herb Garden last year. Over the course of the 20 years, visitors to Midsummer Herbfest were treated to a wealth of alternative and healthy living inspiration. From culinary treats to the Chef Cook-Off
Challenge, guests were also offered programming rich in demonstrations, educational lectures and garden tours. Artisans and vendors from Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley and the far reaches of Ontario and Québec showcased their wares in the outdoor market, which boasted herbal products, eco-services and a wide-variety of healthy living goods and foodstuffs. Rounding out the merriment was live music, dancing fairy performers, face painting, herbal tea sampling, henna tattoos and yoga in the gardens. McNab-Braeside is dedicated to continuing and further developing Herbfest and welcomes vendors and attendees to explore all the Waba Cottage Museum in White Lake has to offer on July 31.. For more information about Herbfest, or to become a vendor, contact township recreation director Geoff Patterson at recreation@mcnabbraeside.com or connect with the museum on Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/WabaCottageMuseumGardens/.

OPP charge Renfrew man with drugging, assaulting female
Sexual assault suspect
A Renfrew man facing charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a female appeared in Renfrew court for a bail hearing Monday. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged Justin MacGregor, 22, with several charges related to a sexual assault that was reported to police on Thursday, July 14. Police believe there may be more victims and are urging others to contact them.
Officers are available to speak to victims or witnesses by calling 1-888-310-1122. Detective Const. Philip Holmes is leading the investigation. The investigation began when a victim reported to officers that she was sexually assaulted in late June by a male known to her. MacGregor was arrested and charged with sexual assault and overcoming resistance by adminis-
tering a drug. There has been some confusion regarding the identity of the suspect as there is at least one other individual in the Renfrew area with a similar name around the same age. His family is concerned he will be mistaken for the suspect. Meanwhile, on July 7 OPP officers began investigating another sexual assault complaint involving a female child victim. The investiga-

year ended to present them with their certificates and other winning items. The Substance Abuse Poster Contest encourages students in the 8-11 and 12-14 age groups to develop an original poster and slogan in the drug and alcohol abuse categories to discourage their peers from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Each year there are four possible winners with one chosen from each category. Each student who enters receives a Knights of Columbus certificate for their participation. “It’s these children who make the substance abuse program so successful,” said Fridgen, the Arnprior Knights of Columbus Council 2028 Chairman of the Substance abuse program. “It makes a huge difference to have the kids involved in these contests. It really brings home what the future effects of alcohol and drug abuse can have on their friends and families; it’s all about awareness.” First-place winners from Knights of Columbus Council 2082 in Arnprior are Grace Kudla of St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Abby Patrois and Alyssa McNulty of John XXIII Catholic School. All three participants took home a winning monetary award and certificate for their winnings at the first stage of the Council level.

Both St. John XXIII students show off their posters that have reached the international level of the competition. All three winners then moved on to the second level of the contest of which all winning Knights of Columbus Council participants from areas of the Ottawa Valley area have their posters submitted to their respective District. At this point of the competition, the District Deputy of District 44’s geographical region has the posters judged. Grace, Abby and Alyssa all took home Substance abuse medallions for their winning of this
category. Abby and Alyssa went on to the third level of competition to which all winners from the Knights of Columbus District participants are put together with the other district winners from within the Diocese of Pembroke. Poster winners from all districts within the Pembroke Diocese are then judged. Abby and Alyssa took home Substance Abuse Poster Contest
Abby and Alyssa of John XXIII Catholic School also took a winning spot in the fourth level of the Substance Abuse Poster Contest program. For winning this level they each received a lamination of their winning posters and a Kobo digital reader. Their posters have now been submitted to the finals of which all posters are sent to the Knights of Columbus Supreme office located in New Haven Connecticut U.S. for entry into the International level of the Substance Abuse Poster Contest. Above, a group of the Island View Retirement Suites ladies help prepare the fresh strawberries for the strawberry social on June 29. The strawberries were donated for the event by McGregor’s Produce, another example of the generosity of area businesses when it comes to local causes and another reason to shop locally. From left are Marjorie Tissot, Deloris Parsons, Ida Gravelle, Pat Leclair and Heather Graham. Left, winner of the Island View strawberry social’s door prize was Alexis Barr of the Lily of the Valley Red Hats. More than 100 residents, family members and friends enjoyed strawberry tarts, pastries, sundaes and musical entertainment by the Diamonds.

Downtown Arnprior may look like a war zone as it’s full steam ahead for the downtown revitalization work this summer. However, downtown businesses remain open and some are even taking advantage of the upheaval by having construction sales.
The business community in Arnprior keeps evolving. Coffee-lovers are abuzz with word that a Starbucks is planned for the gas bar that will be built once the new Canadian Tire store is completed in the Arnprior Shopping Centre this fall. The gas bar and Starbucks is expected to follow with a spring opening.

On the other side of town, an Arnprior institution, Wes’ Chips, has received another honour. The popular chip stand has been named one of the top 10 Canadian chip trucks worth stopping for by the Food Network. Just down the street, another Arnprior institution, Fraser’s, is talking about closing its service station. However, never fear, the towing business will continue.

new executive has taken over its duties. Arnprior Toastmasters new executive for 2016-2017 are president Brad Dota, VP education Carol Byce, VP membership Lynne Zander, VP publicity/secretary Lenore Whelan and treasurer Gail Smith. The club’s mission is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in self confidence and personal growth. The final pre-summer meeting on June 30 was attended by 10 members and 2 guests. The theme was summer plans. A full agenda made the two-hour meeting productive and a whole lot of fun. Two speeches were presented. A new member presented her Ice Breaker, a first speech of four to six minutes. Afterwards ahw received the Ice Breaker Ribbon. The second speech was a 15-minute Power Point presentation on a picture newsletter, which reflected the year’s journey of Arnprior Toastmasters from new executive installation in June 2015, the Teddy Bear Picnic in August, speech contests in September and February, receiving the ‘Toastmaster Meet Here’ plaque (for pictures submitted of the Teddy Bear Picnic), and the Christmas party visited by District Mascot DEER TM, as well as the usual weekly/monthly award certificate and new members’ induction ceremonies. Arnprior Toastmasters journey took members to the new venue of Island View and the growth of the club and its members.

New addition to church pew was very entertaining But then she opened her purse to take out a little lacy hanky, and a strong whiff of lavender perfume floated over the pew causing Emerson to raise his hand to his mouth and let out a loud MARY COOK gagging cough. He wasn’t too fond of perfume. But at least it proved the old lady was still alive. Her skin looked like it had been drawn tightly across her face, and there was no doubt about it, she was going to give me plenty to think about during the long service, and I was secretly delighted, I confess, that she had lost her hearing and had to move up to the front of the church. I soon realized the sinfulness of my thoughts, and asked a quick forgiveness from God for harbouring such ideas. I had no idea what the minister was talking about that day. I was too engrossed in the old lady in the seat beside us. It wasn’t long before she started to doze off and yet she never moved a fraction of an inch in the pew. But her eyelids slipped down, fluttered open, and then closed again for good. Her eyes looked exactly like a chicken that had fallen asleep in the hot sun; almost transparent, with no eyelashes, and white as the driven snow. She flew awake when the organist let out a blast for the last hymn. I must say it startled me too, and for the first time, the old lady looked over at us, and issued what passed for a smile. When the service was over, Mother reached across and extended a hand. Then the old lady opened her purse again, and another whiff of lavender settled around us. She took a nickel out of her purse and handed it to me, and said it was for being so good in church. I was dumbfounded, and Emerson pushed in beside me, but there was no more money in the offing. And then Mother, to my horror, beamed at me after I said my thanks, and told me to go

and put it in the offering plate at the front of the church. I couldn’t believe my ears! The old woman was beaming at me, and I knew I had to do what Mother said, and hand over the nickel. A whole nickel! With a heavy heart I went up to the plate and dropped it in. It was the fastest money I

Our family sat in the pew next to the very front of the church, which I always thought was a shame because I could never see a thing going on behind me. Mother forbade us to turn around in our seats, and my sister Audrey said the whole back of the church could fall in behind us, and Mother would expect us to keep our eyes peeled straight ahead. I thought the church service long and boring. The time dragged by, and even though Audrey said it was a real sin to let my mind wander away from what the minister was saying, I had no idea what he was talking about. And so it was with more than a bit of joy the day a very elderly lady moved from the back to the other end of our pew. Mother said she had lost a lot of her hearing, and through necessity had to move closer to the minister. My brother Emerson said she didn’t know how lucky she was, whatever that meant. I hardly knew the old woman, but I was delighted she was close at hand, because now I had something else to occupy my mind. That first Sunday, she was already sitting in her seat by the time we piled in beside her. The seats curved, so I had no trouble looking over in her direction and giving her a good going over. She was like a little bird … a wren ... or maybe a robin. She sat with her hands folded in her lap on top of her opened Bible. Mother nodded in her direction, but the old woman either had no desire to be friendly, or there was something wrong with her eyesight as well. It looked like someone had just propped her in the seat. In fact, I wondered if that was what had happened, and I wished at once, that we had been there to see her come in. Emerson hissed he thought she may have passed away. Mother poked him on the knee to hush him up.

THANK YOU On behalf of my family and myself, we would like to thank you so very much for everything that so many of you did for us at the time of my brother; Derek Barr’s passing on March 13, 2016. My family was somewhat overwhelmed with all of the flowers, cards, Mass cards, food, visits to the funeral home, and even the lovely messages left on my voicemail. It was so very kind and generous of you and very much appreciated! To my Pastor, Father John Burchat, and my church family, I love and appreciate you all so very much. Thank you, Andre Pilon for taking care of everything so beautifully (as always) for us. Gina, the obituary cards were sooo Derek “Go Giants Go!” Thank you! Steve, the video couldn’t have been more perfect. Wayne, Pat, and Rita… having you there in Ottawa was lovely! Thank you! I knew my family would be blessed and well taken care of in such a “homey” atmosphere at such a difficult time. The name, Pilon Family Funeral Home, speaks volumes not just in words but in actions as well! Derek would have been so very pleased, appreciative, and touched by all the love and care that went into his celebration of life. A very special “Thank You” to my Dear Friend, Joanne McLaren, for her accompaniment on piano as I had the privilege to sing at Derek’s service. Over and over again, we heard of all of the amazing ways in which Derek touched so many people in his 54 years of life. Even the week before he died, Derek continued to thank God for his countless blessings. His biggest blessing ever, which he never, ever stopped thanking God for, was his wife Darlene. Time and time again, he professed that God had sent him an angel. His angel as he called her had completely and forever changed his life. Derek also had been blessed with 3 stepchildren and 2 grandchildren who loved him as much as he loved them. I believe faith happens when we close our eyes and open our hearts. That is exactly what happened for Derek!!! I am so grateful to God for what He taught me through my brother in his last week before he went home to the Lord. What an amazing and humbling experience for me! Love, Roxanne God Bless You All! Good people will be remembered as a blessing. ~ Proverbs 10:7

Martin (Scotty) Paton 1923-2016 Martin passed away on July 14, at the Civic Hospital. He was 92. He was living at the Lord Landsdowne residence in Ottawa where he received exceptional care. Martin emigrated from Glasgow Scotland in 1947 and embraced everything about Canada especially fishing, hunting, golf and camping. He lived in Renfrew most of his adult life and was a proud member of the Renfrew Golf Club and the Masonic Lodge. Martin was married to Marie Marsters (d2000) and then Edna Burgess (separated). Martin is survived by his sons Richard (Julia) and William (Feng Min) and their children Michael (Jade) and their child Malachi as well as Jasmine (David) and granddaughter A Xi. His other son, Bruce died in 2002. Martin always regarded the Burgess children as part of his family-Gail, Billy, Helen, Murray and their children Robbie, Andrew, Sandi and Terri. Martin was a hardworking, responsible, caring and dedicated father and grandparent and a contributor to the community of Renfrew. As a Scotsman he knew how to laugh, enjoy a wee dram of scotch, and share a story with friends. He was always ready to support friends, family and those who worked with him. He loved Canada but he left part of his soul in Scotland and always had a passion for the Glasgow Rangers soccer team. He will be missed dearly and his legacy will remain in the DNA of the family forever. The Celebration of Life will be at the McPhail and Perkins funeral home at 85 Munroe East in Renfrew at 12:30 Friday, July 22. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome. The ‘Behind the Scenes’ award presented at the Seniors at Home volunteer appreciation dinner went to the ‘tax man’ Bob Klodt. For 23 years Klodt has volunteered his professional services for the Income Tax Program offered free by Seniors at Home. The Behind the Scenes award goes to a volunteer who is rarely seen but faithfully helps throughout the years, providing time in service to others. Above, volunteer program co-ordinator Patti Farr, on behalf of the agency, presents Bob and Jackie Koldt with a certificate for their favourite restaurant, PJs, and his favourite treat, a jar of chocolate turtles.
