Person and Family Centered Care
At Arnprior Regional Health we believe healthcare should be tailored to your unique needs and goals. Using a person and family centered approach to healthcare we encourage patients and their families to partner with our healthcare team. Our approach aims to enhance the quality of partnerships with individuals accessing care, ultimately improving clinical outcomes and the person and family’s experience and satisfaction with the care and services received.

Your Feedback
Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) regularly surveys patients following a hospital stay or who used the emergency department. The emergency department survey asks patients the following types of questions: How long did you wait to see a doctor; what level of confidence/trust did you have in the emergency department nurse; were you treated with dignity and respect, and (if applicable) questions concerning pain management. Your feedback is valuable and continuously helps us improve. Previous surveys flagged that patients in the emergence department had a longer length of stay due to waiting for test results. Now certain tests can be authorized by the triage nurse so that by the time the patient sees the doctor the test results are already available, thereby reducing the length of time spent in emergency. We encourage everyone who receives a survey to take 5 – 10 minutes to fill it out. 2 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, July 27, 2017
assessments, shorter hospital stays and more effective healthcare planning, said the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI). With the introduction of this practice throughout Canada, many hospitals were concerned about the extra foot traffic and felt the need to add additional security. While at Arnprior Regional Health our focus was on the person and family centered adoption of this policy. We did this with the purchase of several new sleeper chairs for the inpatient unit.
Successful Sunday Market continues in downtown Arnprior TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Rain, sun and a tornado warning; the first season of the Arnprior Market has seen it all. Even with the unexpected weather, Lindsay Wilson, marketing and economic development officer for the Town of Arnprior, says the market is welcoming 200 to 300 people to downtown each week. “It’s a great outing, a chance to socialize and support local producers and shop at local businesses,” said Wilson. The market runs every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on John Street North from Rock Lane to Elgin Street in downtown Arnprior. The market was scheduled to finish Sept. 3, but due to its success Wilson hopes they will be able to extend the market until the end of September. They have 25 seasonal vendors registered and since opening in May they have averaged 20 vendors. They welcome all types of vendors from home-based businesses, baked goods, crafters, antiques and, for the first time on July 23, local produce. Even buskers are part of the fun the first performer hit the streets last week. Aline and Jean-Guy Clairoux Gardens is new to the market. They de-
cided to put their fresh produce up for sale this week. “It’s been really good here,” said Jean-Guy. Portshell Crafts’ Marilyn and Morley LaBelle sell handmade birdhouses, consigned stained glass and more and travel from Perth to sell at the market. “We come to Arnprior for the market and it is very well organized,” said Marilyn. Katie Ward and Kate Garvie from Our Farm in West Carleton were selling fresh produce (so fresh it was hand picked at 6 a.m.) and local meat. “We have only missed one market,” said Ward. “It’s local and we want to support local.” A number of local stores that were previously never open on Sundays have also now opened their shops to welcome the market customers. The Arnprior Museum is also open on Sunday now to coincide with the market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wilson says traffic picks up as people come downtown to Robert Simpson Park for the free concerts in the park on Sunday’s from 2 to 4 p.m. “We have lots of space to grow,” said Wilson. “We have daily and seasonal spots still open.” For a full list of vendors, and hours of the shops, and more visit arnprior. ca/market.
The Arnprior Market runs every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on John Street North. Bottom right: Stephanie Hanniman and Lise Zamojski sell Thirty-one and Sene Gence (lip/skin care) and chat with Lindsay Wilson, marketing and economic development officer for the Town of Arnprior during the Arnprior Market on July 23. Deirdre McCabe-Berardi’s summer adventures include Superman, Olympic swimming lessons, Daisy Days; it’s the stuff great books are made of. McCabe-Berardi released her first book, Great Turtle Island, on June 27 and now has a book launch at the Arnprior Public Library set for Aug. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The book is based on her life growing up on Mackinac Island and the unique experiences she and her brother go through. “I think they would find they would relate to it,” said McCabe-Berardi as to why people she pick up a copy of the book. “It’s funny and a whole mishmash, lots of adventures of people growing up.” McCabe-Berardi moved to Arnprior in 1997 from Sault Ste. Marie. She obtained her teaching degree from the University of Ottawa and has also earned her bachelor of sociology degree. She has taught at various levels in the community at Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School, Central and Queen Elizabeth Public Schools and in Arnprior at AJ Charbonneau Public School, Walter Zadow Public School and McNab Public School. Writing is in her blood as her father was a show business biographer and profiled Charlie Chaplin, James Cagney and more. “I guess I kind of got it from him; he was a teacher too,” said McCabe-Berardi. McCabe-Berardi was born in New York and grew up in Michigan. She has dual citizenship and received her Canadian citizenship in 2000. This is her first book, a fiction novel, based on her life growing up on Mackinac Island, in Lake Huron/Michigan, which is just under 10 square kilometres. The book started with an idea after a class reunion on the island in 2012 and she remembers she was encouraged to write about something she knew. “Everyone has a story to tell,” said McCabeBerardi. She finished the book in 2013 and revised it in 2014. She admits she doubted herself. “I finally said ‘I think I am ready!’” said McCabe-Berardi. She worked with Burnstown Publishing House and the book was released on June 27. “The editor was wonderful,” said McCabeBerardi. “It ‘s so cool (to have it published), it’s a lot of hard work and now I have something to leave for my sons.” The book focuses on siblings Aurora and Blake, who have a typical childhood on the mainland but have summer adventures on Great Turtle Island. “It’s about things girls go through in life — her coming of age and dating boys,” said McCabe-Berardi.

Deirdre McCabe-Berardi holds up her new book ‘Great Turtle Island’ the local teacher is having a book launch at the Arnprior Library on Aug. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
The island itself has been the set to a number of popular movies including Somewhere in Time, starring actor Christopher Reeve. “My brother and I were extras in the movie,” she says as she holds up a photo of her and Reeve. One of the chapters in the book is called Superman, dedicated to that unique experience. There is another real-life anecdote of what her brother did to get out of swimming lessons: the cover shows them getting ready for Daisy Days (she is dressed as a tap dancer and her brother as a magician) and more. She is already working on her next book, a historical fiction prequel focusing on her mother’s journey from Latvia during the Second World War to the United States. “I feel that I need to share how hard a person’s life can be but still be grateful for living each day to the fullest, she said always learn,” said McCabe-Berardi. Arnprior high school prime minister to champion inclusivity DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Inclusivity will play a big role in student activities, according to Arnprior District High School’s new prime minister. Kaileigh Wright has met with the rest of the student council. And they will continue to do so throughout the summer months. They have decided that helping every student see their role and contributions to school life, and of taking the reins from time to time, is paramount. “I want to approach things from the perspective of growing leaders,” Wright said. “Inclusivity and building a sense of community is really important.” She speaks glowingly of the group around her — of the “very strong council” — saying they have come up with lots of ideas and are keen to get going in September. Wright, who was the first student leader McNab Public School ever had, is eager to take over ADHS during its first year following the namechange from Redmen to Rapids. She and her peers voted for the name, shortlisted along with others, during this past school year. “I’m excited with the name change and can’t wait to come together and
show our school spirit as the Rapids.” Part of helping students feel more included is giving more exposure to LGBTQ issues. She believes more education will help drive away the silence that persists. She also wants to see a clearer link between fundraising efforts and their beneficiaries. It could improve efforts if goals are highlighted, she indicated. All the many ideas and initiatives could use a central location to meet, too. Wright is working to create a student lounge at the school. Right now kids gather in the library, or the busy, noisy cafeteria or hang out on the floor in hallways. Council has asked and learned many seem fine the way it is, but part of leadership is showing others how much better things could be. No location has been determined yet for the school’s first student lounge. The farm girl with ambitious plans of taking neurology at Lakehead University is looking forward to her fourth year on council. She even plans on joining at the post-secondary level. “I’ve always loved student council,” she said. “I’ve just loved being able to Derek Dunn/Metroland contribute and see what’s going on beKaileigh Wright is excited to become ADHS prime minister during the school’s first year as the Rapids. hind the scenes.”

Spotting fakes
We shouldn’t always be offended when the cashier takes a few seconds to check the bill he or she was just handed at the checkout. As much as the newer Canadian polymer currency is more elaborate than its previous paper forms, the issue of counterfeit notes has not gone away even with the safeguards taken by the Bank of Canada. A recent OPP release cites an RCMP report that indicates there were more than 17,500 confirmed counterfeit Canadian bank notes passed in 2016; almost 4,000 were passed in Ontario. That might be a drop in the bucket given $75 billion worth of Canadian bank notes are in circulation, but no one wants to lose out because of counterfeit money. The OPP note that a good counterfeit will look like the real thing, but it might only take a few seconds to spot a fake when checking the safety features (such as feeling the raised ink on the words Bank of Canada on a $5-dollar note, or looking at the metallic building and
seeing it change colour when the bill is tilted). The aforementioned security features can be viewed online at bankofcanada.ca. Cash handlers are advised to set aside any suspicious notes and jot down any information about the circumstances by which the notes were obtained. Provide the suspicious currency to police and request a receipt, so that genuine notes can be returned. Although the person might be trying to pass a counterfeit bank note, he or she might not be aware that the bill is fake and is an unwitting victim of crime, according to the OPP. Retailers are reminded that counterfeit notes are more likely to be passed during busy periods and to be wary of customers who want to pay with much higher denominations of bills than needed. “Cash handlers must ensure their own safety first,” the release states. So-called funny money is no laughing matter when you’re the one who is out of pocket.
Dragons descend on Arnprior To the editor:
The sun reached down and gently kissed Arnprior on Saturday, July 22, and ignited an explosion of colour, excitement, and an infestation of creatures bearing very strange but beautiful heads and tails. Some say that dragons suddenly appeared out of the Madawaska River along the riverfront at Robert Simpson Park startling fishermen, walkers, and some joggers nearby. Others report hearing thunder and roars from real live dragons and drums from Robert Simpson Park around the noon hour, followed by the songs of angels overhead reaching down to them in a strange but familiar language. They say the music was wondrous, even tranquil, and stimulated the senses, even brought tears. How absurd, nonsense, couldn’t be some say. And, what was even more strange, several witnesses reported hearing conversations about Mad Paddlers, Valley Dragons, Blue Dragons, Water Dragons, Water Warriors, Water Nymphs, and even Swamp Lillies and Psirens near the water. Can you believe it, some people – Nauticlew. We even heard of Dukes and Dames Dragon Behind, and then a
sudden desperate piercing scream from somewhere near the Marina - “Shut Up’n Paddle”. In fact, the voice sounded like someone with a military bearing really. It was so strange, but it was certainly incentive for the more adventurous to explore further. Well, what we discovered on closer examination was a festival, a great community festival of dragons, Dragon Boats specifically, racing down the Madawaska River towards the mighty Ottawa to the roars of spectators along the riverfront and the beating of great drums, and the call of drummers and steers persons to “hit, hit, hit together – power, power, power.” What excitement, what energy, what a spectacle as the paddlers appeared to dig even deeper to propel their Dragon Boats even faster towards the finish line ahead of their opponents. Throughout the day, community, women’s, competitive, breast cancer survivor, and youth teams battled to the finish. And, what was most interesting, was that all the teams, in all divisions encouraged and cheered each other on. What a display of sportsmanship and overall com-

munity sprit, can you believe it, I’m absolutely hooked on all of this Dragon Boating stuff. The noon hour drums and roars, and the songs of angels that were reported from Robert Simpson Park were real, not the dragons of course, but the similarities were real and wonderful. In fact, the noon hour ceremonies turned out to be celebrations of life really. The breast cancer survivor ceremony commemorated breast cancer survivors and the ones lost to cancer. It was beautiful, emotional, and hopeful to say the least, and most found the display of bubbles very symbolic indeed. The dragon dance troupe created a “buzz” of activity as dragons undulated to the sound of drums and symbols throughout the crowd to the applause, laughter, and smiles from the audience. The dragon dance ceremony is intended to express a wish and sense of prosperity, happiness, and success to our wonderful Community and we certainly accept their best wishes with gratitude and respect. And, but not least, the songs of angles overhead heard by many. The angle was identified as Rachel Liu from Taiwan who performed with grace and style and introduced our community to Chinese music and culture at its finest. What a wonderful heartfelt performance in every re-

spect. We were also treated to performances by the Kanata Chinese Seniors Support Centre who so graciously introduced our audience to Chinese culture and recreation through a Tai Chi demonstration and a traditional Sword Dance performance. We had it all folks and it certainly complemented our festival in that Dragon Boating originated in China. It was a noon hour celebration that we will never forget. Well, that’s it for me. According to Dragon Boat teams, officials, volunteers, vendors, and our enthusiastic audiences, this years Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival was an overwhelming success in every respect. It showcased Dragon Boating as a sport for everyone, it promoted Arnprior and its surrounding communities as a destination of choice, it brought an abundance of smiles and chuckles, but most importantly, it helped bring our wonderful Communities together as one. What an achievement to say the least. Paddles up and take it away my friends and prepare yourselves for next years Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival in Arnprior on Saturday, July 21, 2018. It’ll be a dandy for sure.

Herb Garden owners set to retire after growing business for 13 years JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com
Gerry and George are retiring from the Herb Garden. After 13 years of growing the Herb Garden in to a multifaceted business, the couple, Gerry Bedard and D.E. George, have decided it is time to sell the popular farm on Old Almonte Road. The couple, known affectionately as Gerry and George, bought the nearly 15-acre farm from Sharon and Gerry Channer in 2004, got married on the property and grew the business in to a well-known herb garden, wedding destination and special event host. “It has been a lot of hard work, but it’s been a labour of love, it had to be,” George said. “We’ve had marvellous staff who love to learn; however, it’s time for us to move along. There’s a ton of potential here, but the property needs younger energy than we have now.” Both George and her husband Gerry are in their 70s. “It’s been a decision we’ve come to over a couple of years,” George said. “There have been a lot of mixed emotions. It’s just time.” When the couple bought the property, it was already operating as an herb garden. Gerry and George had no real experience in the industry. “They were done and wanted to go travelling,” George said. “So, they took our money and went to South America. Gerry and I had only grown herbs in our garden. Some staff stayed on and showed us the ropes. The Channers, who were driving to South America in their Westphalia van, would stop at internet cafes and reply to our questions. They were wonderfully supportive from thousands of kilometres away.” Gerry and George came from a marketing background. They took over the Herb Garden and also Herbfest, a popular festival featuring music, food, vendors and, of course, herbs. “The original idea was Herbfest would move around to different locations,” George said. “The first year, there was about 1,500 people and they knew it was too big to go anywhere else. We hosted Herbfest for 20 years.” At its peak, Herbfest attracted more than 3,000 visitors. Two years ago, Gerry and George decided it was time to move on from Herbfest. They did not want to end the popular festival and after some negotiations, the festival found a new home in White Lake where it debuted last year. This year’s event is slated for Sunday, July 30 at Waba Cottage. The Herb Garden has become a popular home to other events as well. The scenic spot has hosted a special Mother’s Day brunch for the last 13 years, special sales events and the Company of Fools, which stages a performance each year on the property.
“And then we started to get requests to host weddings here,” George said. So, eight or nine years ago, the couple renovated the large barn on the property (other out buildings on site had already been renovated). “Neil Hartwig, a great guy came in and did the support and floor,” George said. “Since then we’ve been booked almost every weekend for weddings. We got at least three inquiries a day. We’ve got bookings all the way in to 2018. We’re very do-it yourself. We rent the property and the wedding planners bring everything in. People like that, making it very much their own wedding.” But George did eventually become involved in the wedding business. “Several years ago, I became a celebrant,” she said. “I now marry some couples here. It’s fun, it’s a lovely time.” George says that has been one of the highlights, of many, of owning the Herb Garden. “It’s obviously a happy time,” she said. “All our couples have been calm and cool. When I stop and think about it, that has been lovely, lovely stuff. I learned my lesson. I now make sure I have plenty of Kleenex — I’ve been caught a few times.” Despite the wonderful memories, the couple already have future plans firmly in place. They have a home in the Town of Almonte ready to move in to. A trip to Australia to visit Gerry’s brother is already scheduled. “I love Almonte,” George said. “I’m looking forward to getting my bike out. Neither Gerry or I am concerned we are going to be bored.” The couple also know what the Herb Garden needs in a new owner. “What this place needs is someone who wants to continue the wedding business,” George said. “We already have a dozen or more weddings booked beyond 2018.” Gerry, who has been busy most of the morning showing a young couple the property, shows off the Herb Garden’s West Ottawa Board of Trade’s Peoples Choice Award — West Carleton Small Business of the Year Award. “One thing I remember well is how well-received we were by the community,” he said. He talks about how Herbfest was nominated for one of the best volunteer organizations in the city, losing out only to volunteering legend Dave Smith. “We provided a venue for local businesses,” Gerry said. “It helped the community a lot and that’s kind of what we do here. We help kids with volunteer hours, but we’re not trying to teach them to be employees, we’re trying to teach them to be entrepreneurs. To us, that’s important and we’re going to miss that.” But Gerry is looking forward to returning his focus to painting. “It’s time we move on and let someone else take over, because this place is magical,” he said.
The Herb Garden owners Jerry and George pose in the 200-year-old barn they restored to host weddings. The couple is retiring to Almonte and hope to leave the popular site in good hands. Jake Davies/Metroland

Study underway to examine feasibility of privately owned transit network
Please, join Food Banks Canada and help feed your neighbours today!
A startup is proposing a 400-km rail system that would connect Ottawa and Gatineau to small, outlying towns, including Arnprior KIERAN DELAMONT Metro
The Greater Toronto Area has GO transit, and the national capital region may one day have Moose transit. Moose is a would-be privately owned, pay-what-you-want expressrail network providing rail service to small towns along six lines. The lines would terminate in Bristol, Arnprior, Smiths Falls, Montebello, La Peche and Alexandria. A recently announced $5-million study, which will be returned in approximately three months and which is being funded by LeMine Investment Group, is the first step towards the development of the network. At the core of Moose’s privateownership model is separating “the business of running stations with the business of running trains,” said Joseph Potvin, Moose’s director. Moose would operate the train service, but independent enterprises would own and operate all the stations. Localities would then “subscribe to train service” — that is, pay Moose an agreed-upon percentage of property value increment. Moose estimates that its entire proposed 400-km network would cost approximately $200 million per year. “All the relevant models to compare this to are (from) between the
mid-1800s and early-1900s,” Potvin said. “Practically all the metropolitanscale railway developments were all fully private-sector investments.” Whether or not this is feasible from a business perspective — that is, whether small municipalities will be able to afford ‘subscriptions’ — is one of the questions the feasibility study is hoping to answer. Moose has recently become entangled in a battle with the City of Ottawa over a 240-metre section of track, near Bayview Station, that was ripped up during construction of the LRT station. Moose had hoped to use that track as part of a line that would traverse the Princess of Wales Bridge to connect with Gatineau. The city, for its part, says that it has “not reviewed the Moose plan and therefore is not in a position to comment,” although at least two stations, Bayview and Carleton, are OC Transpo stations. The proposed system would have no set fares, or any requirement that riders pay at all; tickets would sold on a pay-what-you-can basis. “It’s a way to completely emphasize that the money’s in the property,” Potvin said. “It forces us to design the business such that it does not depend on high transit fares and it does not depend on large public-sector subsidies.”

Arnprior’s Canada Day Car Show rescheduled to Monday, Aug. 7 On the heels of a hugely successful car show in 2016 that was tagged as “outrunning the rain, the 2017 Canada Day Car Show did not have the same success on July 1. With 2017 what seems to be the year of unprecedented rainfall, many event organizers across the community were keeping a close watch on the weather forecast. Looking beyond the July 1 cancellation, the car show committee are now
planning to have the annual event on Aug. 7 and hope to surpass last year’s attendance of more than 120 vehicles. The Arnprior Canada Day Car Show was no exception, as rain and show cars have a tendency to not mix. With the previous two years delivering rain, one would have thought that 2017 would be the perfect mid-20s day and no rain. However, with less than 24 hours before the show, the forecast called for
up to 20 mm of rain throughout both the morning and afternoon. On this basis, the car show stakeholders decided to cancel the annual Canada Day event. As with other event organizers across the region, numerous Canada Day events were cancelled due to the planned rainfall. However, after heavy rainfall in the morning, the skies unexpectedly opened up only to bring sun and
warmth throughout the late morning and afternoon. For car show organizers, it seemingly appeared that the forecasters may have ‘cried wolf’. Regardless of the sun and warmth, the conditions at Hydro Park beside East Side Mario’s would have been disastrous and likely resulting in cars getting stuck in the rain-soaked grounds. In retrospect, it was a good call to cancel. The holiday Monday car show lo-

cated at Hydro Park beside East Side Mario’s will include a fundraising barbecue and 50/50 draw hosted by Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program Inc., and all car show registration proceeds will go directly to the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation. Registration takes place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and the 50/50 draw and awards presentation will take place between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) was instrumental in getting The Arnprior Little Highlanders baseball program off the ground with a generous donation of $500, which helped with the purchase of equipment, shirts and hats. “With the positive reception we received from the town and parents, we are hoping to grow baseball in Arnprior further with plans of starting a house league next year for ages six and up,” said coach Scott Peplinski. Twenty-four kids signed up for the inaugural year. Lack of a league won’t hinder Electric Mites quest for fastball gold JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com
The West Carleton Electric Mites fastball team has everything a team needs to take a run at a provincial championship – except a league to play in. But that hasn’t stopped a group of nine-and 10-year-olds from West Carleton, Arnprior and as far away as Micksburg from forming a team and starting the championship quest this weekend. The Electric are hosting a provincial qualifier ranking tournament this weekend in Fitzroy Harbour. Although the Electric have only played four games this season, coaches are confident the team is skilled enough to be one of the best in the province. Coaches Trevor Barton, Shawn Revertz and Sean Lecuyer have years of experience playing fastball at a high level during their time with the West Carleton Electric men’s fastball team. “We wanted our kids to experience what we got to growing up,” Barton said about the team now in its second year. So the team was formed and has practiced, but has not played too

much, yet. The team played three games in a tournament in Napanee recently, and played an exhibition game against the Electric Squirt team last week on July 20. “We know the kids we have can compete,” Rebertz said. “The coaches have high hopes. The majority of the team played last year and have three
new kids on the team this year. Although there is no viable, relatively nearby league for the team to compete in, the mites come out for two hours of practice every Sunday. The coaches say the team is deep in pitching and deep in spirit. “They’re keeners,” Barton said. “They love it. They all want to be here. Whether it’s practice or a game, they give 110 per cent,” Rebertz said. The upcoming tournament will provide teams with rankings heading in to the provincial championship, which will be held Aug. 19 to Aug. 20 in Ponsonby, ON. The coaches also want to thank sponsor West Carleton Electric Ltd.’s Dale and Lori Hanna who have been supporting ball in West Carleton since before the mites’ coaches played on the team. “He’s been sponsoring ball for at least 40 years,” Barton said. The east qualifier tournament starts Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre with the host Electric taking on the Springbrook Royals. The Curve Lake Trappers and Napanee Calderwood Automation Express will also be competing at the tournament. A small opening ceremony will be held at 10:45 a.m.

The volunteers at Galetta Bowls are ready to welcome the province for the men’s senior triples provincial championship. Sixteen teams will face off on Donald MacHardy Green from July 31 to Aug. 2, fighting for two berths in to the national championship in Peterborough next month. Not only will Galetta be hosting, they will have two teams competing as well. David Jefferies, Rico Silvestro and John Stevenson will make up one team while John Wilson, Gerry Laporte and Greg Brown will make up the other. The club is focused on the championship, and it’s been a challenge. After years of dry summers, the green has got more water than it can handle during one of the wettest springs and summers on record. Volunteer superintendent Jefferies has been working hard to make sure the green is in tip-top shape. “Dave’s been battling all spring and summer,” said his wife Sandra, who will be competing in Carleton Place in the senior women’s triples championship at the same time. “He’s had to be here every day.” “I’ve been here 20-some years,” Jefferies said. “It’s always been you don’t have enough water. This year, it’s gotten too soggy.” But Jefferies is a member of the greens committee for Ontario for a reason. “When people come here, they are expecting good greens,” he said, joking. “So, I drilled about 1,500 holes and filled them with sand and that’s helped quite a bit.” This is the third time Galetta Bowls has hosted a provincial championship.

The club has hosted mixed pairs and open triples in the past. Ontario is divided in to 16 districts and Galetta is in District 16, which has 11 clubs from Deep River to Iroquois and Ottawa to Brockville. Tuesday, July 11 was the playdown to qualify for provincials. It’s been a banner year for lawn bowling in Galetta. The club, which has members from West Carleton and Arnprior, grew to 57 this year. “We picked up a bunch of new members this year,” volunteer and tournament organizer Jean Laprise said. Many of the current roster of members have been with the club since it was first established about 32 years ago. The field was built by local farmer MacHardy. Jefferies says MacHardy was visiting Scotland and saw the sport being played there. When he came back to West Carleton he asked some of the residents if he built the greens, would anyone be interested in playing. MacHardy built three fields. “The grass was a couple of inches long,” Jefferies said. “You could heave the ball as hard as you wanted and you couldn’t get the ball all the way down. The turf has to be hard and firm.” The club has grown to eight rinks, and soon after MacHardy’s passing, the green was dedicated in his memory. “If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have a bowling green,” Jefferies said. “We hadn’t even heard of lawn bowling at the time. Now that I have started, I can’t stop.” It’s a game for all ages, Jefferies says. The club has members as young as eight, right up to 87. Laprise is the oldest member and says she still loves the game. “You can be really competitive at a good age,” she said. “The seniors are really competitive because they have so much experience, they are at their peak.” Laprise says the club isn’t all about competition though. “Most people bowl for the fun of it,” she said. “The social aspect of it. It’s a lot of fun. I told the club, when I can’t bowl anymore, I’m just going to come to heckle.” While a reception for the players in the provincial championship is planned for July 31, action on the green gets underway on Tuesday, Aug. 1. A brief opening ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. followed by tournament play at 8:30 a.m. Anyone interested in watching competitive lawn bowling is invited, free of charge, to come out to Donald MacHardy Green any time over the two days.

Preserving time provided the right ingredients for good memories Just walking past the kitchen door from the outside, you could tell what was going on inside by the sweet smells coming out through the screen. It was preserving time again. It was a sweet smell, and I thought the best place for me to be was out in the swing in the grape arbour. It wasn’t that I didn’t like what was happening in the kitchen, it was because preserving time made the place unbearably hot from the steam coming from the boiling pots on the stove. That day, raspberries were being ‘put down’. We had picked them from deep in the bush, where we went every summer with the cream cans on the stone boat. And they sat in the summer kitchen overnight, and now they were ready to preserve. The berries simmered gently towards the back of the Findlay Oval, and right on the front burner Mother had sealers of every shape and size boiling in the biggest granite pot we owned. The fire had been started by Father before he headed for the barns, and you could feel the heat from every corner of the kitchen. It didn’t take me long to eat my breakfast and head outside. My poor sister Audrey wasn’t so lucky. She was in the stifling kitchen measuring out sugar, making sure there were lids to match the sealers in the boiling pot, and setting out cookie sheets which would hold the bottled preserves until they were ready to move to the swinging shelf in the cellar. I had watched the preserving many times, but always from a distance. Mother was too busy with the job at hand to tell me what chores she wanted done that day, and I was well aware that she and Audrey would be stuck in the steaming kitchen until every last berry was sealed in the jars. Some jars were what I called ‘store bought’, while others had once held pickles or relishes, or even berries put down the year before. I had everything timed perfectly. I could hear, from the opened window looking out into the grape arbour, that Audrey was lifting the jars out of the boiling water and putting them on the cookie sheets. And I knew everything would be in the final stages of preserving, and it would be safe to go into the kitchen again. It amazed me how quickly the steam disappeared once the boiling stopped, and the breeze from the open window and screen door cooled everything down.
Of course, it was still very early in the morning, and the sun was yet to move high into the sky. Soon it would be stifling hot outside, and putting down preserves was well planned to avoid as much as possible the heat of the day. When I peeked in the door, I could see my sister ladling the berries from the big pot into the jars on the kitchen table. And then I saw Mother, with a long fork, pick the lids from the steaming water, and gingerly seal each jar tight. Of course, it was impossible to hit the jar dead on each time, and there was always a bit of preserves running down the outside of a sealer. And so each one had to wipe clean with a wet string dishcloth. And I marveled how Audrey or Mother could handle those hot jars as if they had been cooled in the icebox! There were always some of the boiled berries that were not put in sealers, because Father would be expecting a fruit nappy for his dinner just a few hours away. The jars were allowed to cool completely before Audrey moved them to the cellar. There they would join whatever preserves left over from last year, and the pickles and relishes already ‘done down’ earlier. It took a long time for the sweet smell to leave the kitchen. The Findlay Oval would be allowed to cool down completely after dinner at noon hour, a meal, which would come right out of the oven, since the top of the stove was taken over by the boiling berries and jars. Preserving didn’t mean Father wouldn’t be having his usual big dinner when he came in from the barns. No siree...meat, potatoes and lots of vegetables...that’s what he expected, and that’s what he got! Sometime during the day I would go down into the cellar through the outside door, and marvel at what was before me. And I knew if there was nothing else to eat during the coming winter, there would be lots of preserves, pickles and relishes to keep us from starving. The thought warmed me right through. The Arnprior Airport had an unexpected arrival on Canada Day. A C150 Global Odyssey on an around-the-world chopper flight made its first stop at the town’s airport. Weather prevented a trip to the Ottawa Science and Technology Museum. On board is, from left, No, it’s not a snapshot from the Hollywood film Platoon. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
